Job cuts looming for valley teachers

By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff Job cuts are expected for Columbia Valley teachers in the next few months, but the full extent of the staff reductions will not be known until fall, the Rocky Mountain School District confirmed this week.

Paul Carriere, superintendent of schools for School District #6, indicated “slight staff reductions in Golden and Invermere” for the upcoming school year if enrolment figures do not increase by September.

Doug Murray, president of the Windermere Teachers’ Association, said he believes cuts will be more significant.

“There are a lot of reductions in teaching staff happening here,” he said. “They [School District #6] were trying to place all teachers who have continuing contracts but were unable to do so.”

Without guaranteed work for the 2012/13 school year for contracted staff, the future for those on temporary contracts and teachers on call (substitute teachers) is uncertain, he said.

“We’re basically going down to fewer librarians, fewer special education teachers; we lost a district resource person who looked after the district library and teacher training,” he said. “You wouldn’t want to come here if you’re an up-and-coming teacher.”

The school district budget, which includes funding for teaching positions, is based on enrolment figures, Mr. Carriere explained. The enrolment numbers, released each fall, have shown a decade-long decline across the district, which stretches from Golden to Kimberley.

Teaching job cuts locally are being predicted based on a lack of students currently signed up for the next school year.

“If the number of students we have decreases, so does the funding,” Mr. Carriere added. “However in the coming year, government is providing additional funding to Boards of Education under Bill 22. This is referred to in

the legislation as the Learning Improvement Fund.”

The Learning Improvement Fund, which will see close to $400,000 of additional funding for School District #6, will result in more local employment for teachers and support staff, Mr. Carriere said.

Decisions on exactly how to make use of the funding have not yet been made, he added.

The money is earmarked for hiring additional teachers and special education assistants, increasing teaching time and for professional development and training.

But the funding is a drop in the ocean for teachers who are exhausted with fighting the government over contracts, Mr. Murray said.

“It’s an insult,” he said. “It’s the government’s way of saying, ‘Look, we’re putting millions back with the learning fund’ ... it sounds like a lot until you stretch the money across B.C. The LIF means a lot of time spent filling out forms for funding that should be there in the first place.”

There are 47 full-time and 29 part-time teachers across the Columbia Valley’s six schools. Mr. Murray believes support and/or teaching positions may be cut from up to four of the six schools, with teachers moving to different schools to fill gaps. Measures like split-grade classes are increasingly likely locally, he added.

“This is the worst year I’ve seen: we’ve never gone through a loss of jobs before,” Mr. Murray added. “A lot of people really love this area and what it has to offer, but at some time they have to think of themselves. Sometimes you can’t afford to be a temp or teacher on call.”

Mr. Carriere agreed that the job market is “tight” for newer teachers in the school district, but said jobs are still available locally. Measures like the introduction of full-day kindergarten across the district have slightly increased employment opportunities, he added.

“There are many applicants for few positions, so the job market continues to be quite tight for new teachers,” he said. “However, there are positions available that we are filling through the usual post-and-fill process.”

As the school year draws to a close, the province’s teachers held rallies across B.C., including in Invermere, on Wednesday, June 20th, to mark one year without a contract.

The British Columbia Teachers’ Federation, which represents around 40,000 B.C. teachers, has been locked into a contract dispute with the province for 10 months now over working conditions. Teachers have also withdrawn from voluntary duties as part of the dispute.

On June 15th, a Labour Relations Board ruled that B.C. teachers are able to pull out of voluntary duties as part of their contract dispute but cannot skip parentteacher meetings and other school meetings.

• On June 16th at 10:30 p.m., the RCMP executed a search warrant at 7330 Copper Horn Drive in Radium, under the Controlled Drugs and Substance Act. The warrant was issued as a result of an ongoing investigation, and the residence is occupied by persons known to the police.

The search resulted in the seizure of heroin, cocaine and a sum of money, along with evidence to indicate charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking. A 39-year-old woman and 38-year-old man were arrested and held in custody. Crown approved charges against the woman, who remained in custody and appeared in Invermere court on June 20th for a bail hearing. No charges have currently been laid against the man, who was released, but they could be if more information is provided.

The investigation is continuing.

• On June 14th at 7 a.m., the Columbia Valley Detachment received a complaint of two stolen bikes from the 7300 block of Kootenay Park Drive in Radium. A whiteand-black Kona and a brown Rocky Mtn. bike were stolen.

• On June 14th, police received a complaint of theft of a Husqvarna chainsaw, model 343, with a steel cover.

This theft occurred at a construction site in the 1900 block of Swansea Rd. in Windermere.

• On June 14th, a 24-year-old man was arrested for being drunk in public, after local RCMP received report of an intoxicated male on Hwy 93/95 just north of Invermere. The man was held overnight and released in the morning with a ticket for being drunk in public.

• On June 14th, the detachment received a complaint of an ongoing history of domestic assault. The victim is a 25-year-old woman. As a result of information obtained, a 28-year-old man from Invermere was arrested and charged with assault as well as threats. The man will appear in Invermere Provincial Court in September.

• On June 17th at 9:05 p.m., a 63-year-old man went to an apartment unit in the 4800 block of Stanley St. in Radium and attempted to use a key to enter his son-in-law’s apartment, under his son-in-law’s instruction. The man was told that if the key and lock gave him problems, he should pry open the deadlock. The man ex-

perienced problems and broke open the deadlock, only to discover he was in the wrong building and the wrong apartment (which was fortunately empty). He did the right thing and reported the incident to management and the police, and arranged to pay for the damage. The man went to the next building and the correct apartment, where the key worked fine.

• On June 18th at 12:30 a.m., police checked a vehicle on the highway near Invermere. The 27-year-old male driver from Prince George displayed signs of being impaired, but refused to take an ASD demand. His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days, and his 2004 Dodge pickup was impounded for 30 days.

Not everything happens to me On June 17th, Constable Tim Harper was contacted regarding an ongoing water balloon battle involving numerous 9-year-olds on 13th Street, Invermere.

The report Cst. Harper received was that one youth who was going down in defeat tactfully retreated to his residence, at which time Grandma attempted to intervene as a peacemaker (grandparents are often called upon to stand in for United Nations during attempts to gain control of the streets).

Unfortunately, in the heat of battle such intervention are ignored and United Nations often falls under fire, which was the case here.

Cst. Harper received a request to create a no-fly zone and nuke the remaining warriors. Instead of attending the war zone right away, Cst. Harper said it was more prudent of him to conduct a pre-conflict reconnaissance over the phone in order to avoid going into battle ill prepared.

If the remaining warriors will shoot loaded water balloons at a Grandma, he said, what chance would he have entering the battlefield without proper preparation or water cannons of his own?

While still conducting reconnaissance over the phone, Cst. Harper learned that the other combatants had possibly retreated to their own residence. No doubt the remaining 9-year-olds feared a retaliative strike by higher and stronger authority.

Cst. Harper requested that the Commander (mother) of the soldier going down in defeat be placed on the phone. Mom agreed that the other Commanders (parents) were best to conduct a peace summit to resolve issues, and work on a peace plan to set clearer rules of engagement.

At the end of the day, Cst. Harper stayed safe and dry. I gave him an ‘attaboy!’ for how he handled the situation. Now, had I been called, I would have geared up in my rain suit, ballooned up and taken side with the outnumbered soldier and battled on. If you think I’m kidding, ask the kids on my street in Golden.

Into the great unknown

By Kelsey Verboom During the next few weeks, David Thompson Secondary School graduates will walk the stage, toss their caps in the air, and celebrate 13 years of working hard to achieve scholarly success.

Having been a graduate of David Thompson Secondary School myself, I remember the pure, thrumming excitement of being able to finally leave the valley for something bigger, better, and brighter. Now having returned home after a university and college degree, I realize the valley is a great place to be — just a little small at times.

However, I am only a small portion of my graduating class that has boomeranged back into the local job market. The majority of my classmates sought schooling and work elsewhere, and now only return during holidays.

Based on statistics from the most recent Census of Canada, this trend is an increasing one in the Kootenay region. In 2011, the labour force of young workers aged 18-24 dropped by 12 percent, or by close to 1,000 jobs.

This dip in the available pool of young workers opened up opportunities for other youth who fell into the ‘unemployed’ category. Consequently, it did good things for the area’s youth unemployment rate, which fell from 9.6 per cent to a more palatable 6.8 percent.

Overall this looks good on paper, and it’s a bonus for those workers filling the gaps left by 1,000 less workers, but the trend of youth leaving the region for shinier employment opportunities could have damaging effects in the long run.

By the very nature of our heavily tourism and service-based area, many workers of the youth age category are faced with job ads for relatively low paying jobs with minimal chances of moving up. Pair that with the simple fact of geography, which causes those seeking higher education and jobs in specific fields to move elsewhere, and you have a recipe for an uninviting job environment in which to return home.

Our valley needs to focus on business programs that promote skilled jobs for younger workers, so they might return and even out the valley’s age demographic a little more.

Secondary suites are important Dear Editor: I was very surprised to hear, from the Columbia Valley Pioneer Regional District of East Kootenay Briefs in last Friday’s paper, that Wendy Booth had deduced there was no appetite for secondary suites in Area F. Where and how did she conduct her survey to come to such a conclusion? I couldn’t make it to the town hall meeting where this was on the agenda (I was working), but I neither read nor heard anything that came from it, which suggested secondary suites were unwanted in Area F. As a someone who has spent many years in the area living in (illegal) secondary suites, and is now considering purchasing a home in the area (with a po-

tentially legal secondary suite to help my mortgage), this is an issue that is of significant importance to me.

I noticed the brief in the newspaper stated that “some portions” of Area F would be excluded from the new zoning bylaw. Perhaps she could elaborate on which areas that would be?

Weeds out of control in pesticide-free towns Dear Editor: The infestations of weeds and bugs is getting unmanageable and starting to detract from the healthy community that pesticide-free communities thought they were achieving.

The frivolous and unenforceable municipal pesticide bylaws promoted by the Canadian Cancer Society, Pesticide Free BC, Wildsight, Suzuki and others are starting to wear thin on homeowners and city staff.

The consistent themes employed by these groups — “better safe than sorry,” and “we are the trusted authority”— are inferences that the Pest Management Regulatory Agency has fallen asleep at the wheel and that their extensive and comprehensive reviews of pesticides have no credibility.

These same organizations also continue to make reference to the “many safer and better alternatives” that exist to control weeds and bugs, so why bother with the conventional “toxic” substances.

These environmentalists and NGOs have never provided specific lists of lawn care products they say are harmful and continually lump all pesticides into the same “toxic” category.

A report just recently released by the Pest Management Regulatory Agency, listing Canadian sales of pesticides in 2008, provides some surprising statistics. Of all

pesticides sold in Canada, more than 60 per cent are for agriculture while less than 2 per cent are for the domestic market, which includes the lawn care products.

The top ten domestic pesticides are dominated by swimming pools and spa products. Yes that’s right: chlorine and bromine are pesticides and are regulated and reviewed for use the same way that 2,4-D is.

So if these environmentalists and NGOs feel the Pest Management Regulatory Agency got it wrong on pesticide reviews, why are they not raising the alarm on the reviews of pesticides used in your local pool? The truth is that the Pest Management Regulatory Agency is known for the most stringent pesticide reviews in the world, and there is no need to worry about exposure to pesticides on lawns or in pools when the directions for use are followed.

The BC Special Committee on Pesticides chaired by MLA Bennett listened to the experts and made the informed decision that science does not support the banning of lawn care products. It’s time that the Canadian Cancer Society Pesticide Free BC, Wildsight, Suzuki and municipal councillors get on with issues that really matter, like the economy, lack of jobs and rising taxes.

The latest regional employment statistics suggest the economy in the Kootenay region is gradually on the road to recovery, yet unemployment rates in the Kootenays remain the second highest in British Columbia.

After three consecutive years of job losses, the Kootenay labour market increased in 2011, according to BC Check-Up, Regional Edition.

Between 2008-2010, the Kootenay region (includes the Central and East Kootenay area) lost 7,300 jobs.

In 2011, the market rallied and rose by 2,700 jobs, or 3.9 per cent. The increase in jobs was the third highest among the eight regions the statistics cover.

“Last year’s continued economic recovery was due mainly to growth in the Kootenay’s burgeoning service sector,” said Cindy Popescul, a chartered accountant with BDO Canada, the company that compiled the statistics.

“Looking ahead, as ground breaks on a number of major new projects, this positive economic momentum should continue into the coming year.”

However, the heavy losses during 2008-2010 still leave our region with the second highest unemployment rate in B.C. Unemployment rates declined from 9.3 per cent to 8.2 per cent between 2010-2011, compared to the provincial average of 7.6 per cent to 7.5 per cent.

The report attributes a portion of the still lagging job situation to residual effects of the forest sector downturn.

The statistics, which are from 2011, do not include any jobs created by Canfor’s recent announcement that the Radium sawmill will reopen.

Closely related to the forest industry, the Kootenay region saw 800 additional jobs created in the construc-

tion industry. There were no statistics available for the Columbia Valley specifically.

“While work opportunities for contractors diminished due to fewer building permits, new major project construction and commercial developments generated increased employment for construction workers,” Ms. Popescul said in a news release.

A slight increase in financial security in the region also led to modest growth in the Kootenay’s real estate market.

“There was some easing of HST on second homes, where those buying a second home could claim an HST credit. In Invermere where second homes are many, this likely had an effect on the real estate market,” Ms. Popescul told The Pioneer.

Major project developments currently underway in the region, like hydroelectric dams, ski resorts, and golf course developments, totalled $3.8 billion. However, the total value of all major project investment (some not yet being built) declined slightly from 6.9 billion to $6.7 billion, when comparing the fourth quarters of 2010 and 2011, the report stated. The recently approved $450 million Jumbo Glacier Resort is not included in the statistics.

Region-wide, the services-production sector saw the greatest increase in jobs, growing by 4,000 jobs (services producing jobs are jobs that provide a service for a fee.

For example: landscaping).

The employment rate in accommodation and food services, a sector with major impact locally, where golf courses, ski hills, pubs, and restaurants dot the valley, experienced a 1,200 job boost in the Kootenays.

The youth labour force fell by 12 per cent, meaning there was an opening of jobs for workers aged 18-24.

This caused the youth unemployment rate to repair itself by 2.8 per cent, for a total of 6.8 per cent.

Local hockey player to star in reality TV show

By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff An up-and-coming Invermere hockey star will step into the spotlight this fall as one of 20 players selected for a new reality TV show. Robert-Tye (RT) Rice is preparing to spend two weeks in Ottawa over the summer receiving intensive hockey training from NHL pros for reality series, Hit The Ice. The 17-year-old, who is a lifelong hockey enthusiast, was selected to take part when show scouts spotted him play at the National Aboriginal Hockey Championship in Saskatoon in April.

“I was playing for Team BC in Saskatoon … this reality show was there to pick out the top 20 Aboriginal players,” RT said. “They sent me something to sign and said, ‘Would you like to take part?’”

RT, who has Métis heritage on his mother’s side, was asked to send in a short video stating why he’d be suitable for the show. Within days the Rice family received a call from show creators Nish Media to say RT had been chosen.

“Right away I thought, ‘This is a great opportunity,’” RT added. “They train and teach you on and off the ice and bring in pros to basically teach you how to be a pro player in the NHL.” The show, which will air on the Aboriginal People “Reverse logo for use on darker backgrounds (black background for reference only Television Network in January 2013, will feature 20 First - not part of the ”logo”):

Nations teens aged 16-18. It will follow the highs and lows of their two-week training as they prepare to showcase their skills in a final game before scouts from U.S. universities and the Canadian Hockey League.

For the self-professed shy teen, the thought of stepping in front of the cameras brings mixed emotions.

“I am a bit nervous, I’m kind of shy so being on a reality TV show is big for me,” RT explained. “I’m looking forward to getting a lot out of the training and spending time with other players … I have no idea who else is going to be there, but I think I’m the only one from the Kootenays.”

Former NHL hockey professional John Chabot will be leading the boys’ training as their head coach when RT flies out to begin the camp on July 21st. The Hit The Ice team is also promising tips and pointers from some of the biggest names in hockey, which has RT wondering if some of his heroes might be in attendance.

“Jordan Tootoo is amazing; he’s one of the Aboriginal players in the NHL,” he said. “Of course Sidney Crosby is awesome. It would be amazing to meet him.”

RT has been playing hockey for most of his life, with enthusiastic support from his hockey-loving parents, DK and Rob Rice, the former head coach of the Columbia Valley Rockies, and sisters Cydnie, Braydi and Wasyn.

In addition to playing twice for Team BC at the National Aboriginal Hockey Championship, RT plays for the Fernie Ghostriders Junior B team and spent two

seasons on the ice for the Columbia Valley Rockies. He hopes to make the step up to the Junior A league next season and dreams of playing for the NHL someday.

“We’re very proud parents,” Rob Rice said. “It’s nice to see this for our son who has worked so hard to bring his skills up to a high standard and always worked to improve … he has earned it.”

Movie Review: Wanderlust Reviewed by Kelsey Verboom Wanderlust is a movie with few scruples and an overused storyline, yet somehow it manages to deliver new laughs.

This satirical comedy is a Judd Apatow production (The 40-year-old Virgin, Pineapple Express, Anchorman) and comes with all the expected Apatow touches: lewd outbursts, raunchy riffs, and actors trying to outdo each other with the funniest and most shocking lines. It’s rated R and definitely not for the whole family.

The cast includes Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston, which would lead many to believe it’s a cutesy chick-flick with puppy dog antagonists. Wrong. In what are obviously improvised scenes — like one where Rudd talks with a hillbilly accent in front of a mirror trying to prep himself to have sex — Rudd is something straight out of a Saturday Night Live skit. His and Aniston’s departure

from their usual typecast roles will likely shock and delight most.

The plot of Wanderlust is as old as some of the shriveled nudists who appear in it: city slickers George and Linda (Rudd and Aniston), caught up in the material rat race of New York, escape to a hippie-dippie “open community” in the countryside, where they are simultaneously uncomfortable and delighted by the free-spirited ways of commune living.

As a satire, it’s full of commune clichés — longhaired, pot-smoking, slightly unwashed-looking, barefoot hippies who shun “the Man” and technology (they believe the latest high-tech gadgets include VCR tapes and pagers) in favour of open relationships, hefty batches of hallucinogens, and producing their own food.

If you take the clichés at face value, this movie is terrible. But if you look at them as Apatow intended —

ironically — you’ll find yourself giggling often. There are many awkward pauses and overly obvious comments, which are reminiscent of actor/comedian Will Ferrell’s style of line delivery.

This movie should come with a warning label about two specific scenes that will sear into your memory like a bad cattle brand (SPOILER ALERT): a slow motion downhill chase scene with elderly participants of a nudist wine makers’ convention, and the home birth of a love child whose parents plan to cook and eat the placenta.

You get the picture. Wanderlust might kill a few of your brain cells, but it will make you laugh.

Beer festival The first annual East Kooteany Beer Festival in Fairmont on June 16th was a straightup sipping success. More than 300 beer enthusiasts gathered at Mountainside Golf Course to try dozens of different brews.

Prior to the festival, The Pioneer held a contest for tickets, where readers could enter by submitting their favourite recipe that uses beer as an ingredient. By draw, the winners were Thea and Dave Hansen, and Jennifer Mercier. Thanks to everyone who entered!

2 tsp salt 1-19 oz. can chickpeas, drained and rinsed 1 can kidney beans, drained and rinsed 2 cups corn, frozen or fresh 2 cans cooked black beans, drained and rinsed 2-28 fl. oz. cans diced tomatoes 1 bottle of beer 1 tsp chipotle paste water and/or stock 1 bunch of cilantro, chopped 2 or 3 limes Salt and pepper to taste In a large pot, saute onions, carrots, celery, zucchini, jalapeño pepper and garlic in oil until soft. Add spices. Saute 2-3 minutes more before adding chickpeas, kidney beans, black beans, corn, tomatoes, beer and chipolte.

Add water or stock to cover, and let simmer over low heat for about an hour stirring often.

To finish, garnish with cilantro, juice and zest of the limes, and salt and pepper to taste.

Design a park feature

By Pioneer Staff As Panorama Mountain Village gears up for its preview summer weekend, a new contest is being launched to design a feature for the resort’s downhill bike park.

The Dream It, Drop It competition, a collaboration between Panorama Mountain Village and Rockstar Energy Drink, is now open for riders to submit their designs for an innovative park feature.

The winner will see their idea become reality as the Panorama park crew constructs their entry for the Rockstar Bike Rodeo event on July 21st. This is the second time that the contest will be held at the resort.

“With the Dream It, Drop It contest riders have the chance to design a feature for Panorama’s downhill mountain bike park,” said Jamie Hurschler, Marketing Coordinator. “The contest launched on Monday and people can upload their designs to Facebook.”

The contest will close on July 9th, with the bike park crew picking the winning entry and constructing it in time for the grand opening on July 21st. The win-

ning designer and three friends will receive a four-night stay, tickets to the bike park and will be the first to ride the new feature.

The competition launches just before the hill’s two-day sneak peek weekend on June 23rd and 24th. Panorama will open fully for summer the following weekend, Saturday, June 29th.

For pedal pushers, this means access to the hill’s 33 kilometres of cross-country trails and the opening of the Mile 1 Quad, which transports riders and their bikes to the resort’s 17 downhill trails.

“It should be really exciting, we’ve got a good summer planned for Panorama,” Mr. Hurschler said.

“We’ve just launched our Dream It, Drop It contest, we’ll be having championship races up at Panorama again this summer, the Canada Cup and BC Cup … and we have a new fleet of downhill mountain bikes available for people to rent.”

Volunteer Corner Learning in high definition Training videos will now be shown in sharper clarity for the Radium Hot Springs Fire Department, after they received a very special donation from Edgewater’s Royal Canadian Legion Branch #199.

This week, the Legion donated a 51inch flat screen television to the squad for video training. The Edgewater Legion has a generous history: it has also made donations to the Windermere Valley Cadets, and the Invermere hospital emergency room upgrade. The funding for such donations comes from a special-use expenditure fund of monies raised during the annual Poppy Campaign.

This year’s poppy event will run from October 26th to November 11th.

Give used art a new home Art from the Attic is looking to give neglected art pieces another chance at the spotlight to raise money for the Columbia Valley Arts Council and the Invermere Health Care Auxiliary.

YOUR MONEY Are we in a bond bubble?

There is a great deal of buzz in the media these days that North America is in a government bond bubble.

Persistent economic uncertainty has contributed to government bonds becoming extremely expensive, driving interest rates to record lows, and the fear is that this phenomenon is set to collapse.

Since government bonds are normally considered a safe haven, this has many investors confused as to how something safe could be considered a bubble.

What is a bubble?

A bubble is a situation when too many people flock into an asset class at the same time, driving prices up to unjustifiably high, unsustainable levels. It can also be characterized by prolonged trading in assets or products with inflated values.

Bubbles occur due to speculation or uncertainty, and often without much rationality. When bubbles eventually burst, it is evidenced by a sudden drop in price.

Bubbles can be difficult to identify, and are not usually apparent until after they have popped. In fact, some economists deny their existence entirely, arguing that markets are always fairly priced, or “efficient.” There are some good arguments to support this theory; however it does not explain events such as the Wall Street Crash of 1929, the Dot-com crash or the recent United States housing bubble.

How bonds trade To understand if we are in a bond bubble, it’s important to understand how government bonds are traded.

For all intents and purposes, bonds are issued and mature at $100 per bond and carry a fixed semi-annual interest payment.

After bonds are issued to the public, they begin trading on the bond market as investors can buy and sell previously purchased bonds with each other any time that they want. The bond markets are just as competitive as stock markets and are actually many times larger.

How we affect bond prices The single most important factor in the direction of government bond prices is investor behavior.

Investors generally turn to government bonds when they want low risk investments with a predictable stream of income.

If more people want government bonds than are willing to sell them, the prices of these bonds will rise, driving down their interest yield. As long as new investors are willing to accept less and less interest yield, bond prices will keep rising and their yields will keep falling.

This phenomenon will continue until government bond yields reach a point where new buyers become disinterested and find something else to do with their money, such as the stock market or real estate.

Are we in a bond bubble?

So if government bonds are so expensive today, then why aren’t investors becoming disinterested?

It’s safe to say that a large percentage of today’s investors lack optimism in the economy and remain concerned with risk.

In some cases, people have been so risk-averse they have been willing to accept negative returns on their money, after adjusting for inflation.

However, bubbles are usually characterized by greed, not fear. It’s very unlikely the current bond market is in a bubble because it’s driven by fear and desire for safety rather than greed. It would be fair to assume that the bond market would only collapse if investors suddenly became so optimistic that they all sold their bonds at the same time in a rush to invest elsewhere.

Given the uncertainties in world today, this isn’t very likely to happen Speak to an advisor Most people with diversified investment accounts contain some element of bonds, either held directly or blended into mutual funds. It may be prudent to review the bond component of your portfolio with your advisor to get his or her opinion on whether the type and duration of the bonds held are suitable for your personal situation and the economy going forward.

Tour of the Arts gears up

By Kristian Rasmussen, Pioneer Staff Art lovers will have to question where reality ends and the brushstrokes begin as they are transported into a scenic world of picturesque beauty. The fifth annual Columbia Valley Tour of the Arts begins Sunday, August 5th.

The event is a self-guided tour of five different locations that house 46 talented artists throughout the valley. On the day of the event, the artists will be spread out around the five locations and will be displaying their unique pieces in varying mediums. All funds from the tour go to support the Columbia Valley Arts Council.

“People really enjoy the tour and going to these new spots every year,” said Lynda Tutty, event organizer.

After a day of sightseeing through some of the valley’s most beautiful locations, Copper Point is hosting the tour reception on the resort patio.

“As a brand-new resort coming into the area it is very important for us to be part of the local scene,” said Charmaine Richter, area director of sales and marketing at Copper Point. “We want to be thought of as more of a venue than just a resort. I think it is important for people to come up and see what we can offer.”

The Dry Gulch Ramblers will give the event their rustic charm as musicians for the reception, and the resort will be offering a very colourful auction of several beautiful birdfeeders handpainted by local artists.

Bidders can then make their final offer at the Brilliant Birdfeeder Auction at Copper Point during the reception.

Part-time valley resident and artist, Jim Robertson, put some of his creative touches on one of the birdfeeders up for auction.

“I really went for that fun, cottage, Canadian long weekend sort of theme,” Mr. Robertson said.

Fellow artists and valley resident, June Thomsen, has done her own unique take on the birdhouse theme, which was inspired by kayaking through the wetlands, she said.

Invermere heritage building gets a little lift

By Kristian Rasmussen Pioneer Staff A piece of Invermere's architectural history is getting a makeover.

The Canterbury House on 14th street has been suspended six feet off the ground and moved forward to make room for a basement and extra yard space for new tenants, Quiniscoe Homes.

The structure, built in the 1920s as a police and court office, had to be fully suspended so that the new basement could be excavated. The team at Quiniscoe has done their research on the property and want to give the building some of its original charm.

“We are actually going to bring the building back to what it looked like historically,” said Dave Penner, director of operations for Quiniscoe. “While we are doing the work on the basement we are also going to be upgrading the walls, which will give us a much more comfortable and energy efficient building to use.”

The rustic charm of the building was worth the extra work, Mr. Penner said.

“This was the first property that I found that my wife and business partner approved of,” he said. “It had a lot to do with the charm of the building and the yard, and I have always liked homes that have been there for awhile and still look good and are solid.”

Public works is an adventure

By Kristian Rasmussen Pioneer Staff From rescuing stranded deer to dodging 120 foot geysers exploding from damaged water mains, a day in the life of a public works worker is anything but normal.

Norm Thies is an employee at the Village of Radium Hot Springs. He has been in public works for 28 years and said that his greatest reward is knowing a job has been well done.

“The sense of satisfaction at the end of the project and knowing that you have taken part in something to renew the community is pretty rewarding,” Norm said.

“Providing safe water is also a great part of the job. People all across the province have to boil water, but we are in a really good position here. We have all the treatment facilities and protective barriers.”

Norm had to deal with a little more drinking water than anyone could handle when the village’s main water pipe burst last year. The 16-inch water main happened to spring a leak at the highest pressure point on the water system line, which holds approximately 250 psi.

“By the time we got to the site, half of the dirt around the pipe was blown away and there was 120 feet of water shooting into the air,” Norm said. “ We had to shut the whole town down and get a custom clamp manufactured to handle the pressure.”

When he is not dealing with catastrophic hydro explosions, Norm has had to play the part of conservationist. One day, a group of deer managed to sneak into the sewage pond area at the Radium treatment facility.

Norm noticed that some of the deer were on top of the

banks of the sewage lagoons in distress.

“We went over there and there were two fawns in the lagoon themselves,” Norm said. “They couldn’t get out because the liner is so slippery.”

Norm worked for two hours to get a rope around the fawns and pull them to safety and save their lives.

Many of the tasks that Norm has to complete in a day require a wide range of skills and experience, but the number-one task a public works employee has to excel at is exercising facial muscles. Smiling, friendly service is key in public works.

“You need to be someone who can deal with the public,” Norm said. “We can get a complaint about something that might not seem that relevant to you, but it might be important to citizens. You really have to respond accordingly and politely.”

Norm’s tasks at the sewage treatment plant will be getting a little easier when additions to the plant are completed in August of this year. The Village of Radium Hot Springs is adding a $2 million moving bed bioreactor system to their sewage treatment plant.

“It basically consists of a volume of these little plastic honeycomb objects called media,” said Ken McDonell, Radium Hot Springs Superintendent of Public Works.

“They are like a little honeycomb. They fill a tank full of these and all the raw sewage flows through and gets screened out through the new media.”

The addition of the new system will almost double Radium’s capacity to handle sewage flows.

With the new system, the Village of Radium will be equipped to handle sewage demands of the town at its total build-out capacity, including yet-developed lots.

Golfers not coy about fundraising Golfers flocked to the 23rd annual Coy’s Fun Day on Saturday, June 16th, for some fundraising rounds of golf, a delicious dinner and plenty of prizes. The event is the Fairmont and District Lions Club’s largest fundraiser of the year, with the proceeds from the 2012 event going to support the Family Resource Centre in Invermere.

SEEKING MEMBERS FOR THE URBAN DEER ADVISORY COMMITTEE The District of Invermere is looking for one (1) member of the public to volunteer for a two (2) year term to monitor the implementation of the Urban Deer Management Report and Recommendations.

Membership on the Board will be for a two (2) year term from the date of appointment.

To be eligible, you must be a resident of the District of Invermere.

Successful candidates must possess a strong sense of community service, willingness to work respectfully as part of a team and have good communication skills.

The Urban Deer Advisory Committee shall: • Coordinate an annual urban deer count within the boundaries of the District of Invermere; • Monitor the implementation of management recommendations for reducing the urban deer population; • Seek and implement strategies for the prevention and management of urban deer conflicts; • Report to Council on an annual basis regarding budget allocation, success of the recommendations and advise of potential changes in implementation for Council to consider.

Seven local artists adorning the walls at Pynelogs Submitted by Joshua Estabrooks Assistant Curator at Pynelogs Cultural Centre Want a great way to beat the rainy-day blues? We have a new show on the walls here at Pynelogs that’s ready for visitors to view, enjoy and maybe even purchase a piece or two!

This show marks the beginning of our juried showcases for the summer, and includes seven incredibly talented local artists who live and work around the Kootenays.

Invermere’s Cathy Parkes, a former animator from Toronto, will have a number of acrylic paintings on display that showcase the beauty and wonder of the nature from which she draws inspiration.

Potters Gerry George and Tom Symington live and work in Fairmont Hot Springs, and together run Columbia Ridge Pottery. Both Gerry and Tom will showcase a variety of works they have created over the winter, including both functional and more abstract sculpture.

Jim Lawrence hails from Kaslo, and is a self proclaimed ethical photographer and environmentalist. His photographs aim to instill an understanding of our fragile wilderness and inspire respect for life in endangered ecosystems.

For Golden-based artist Marty Ryan, the showing will be a chance to display some brand new paintings, along with some hanging copper pieces.

Local photographer John Niddrie recently retired from his career with Parks Canada and has dedicated

much of his newfound free time to creatively photographing the world. He not only snaps photos, but also carries out every step in the printing and framing process, making each piece a true testament to his artistic vision.

Our final artist, Cranbrook’s Val MacPhee, began painting 20 years ago as a healing tool, and has been showing her work since 1990. Painting primarily in water media, her works utilize striking colours and very fluid lines.

This show will run from June 19th to July 1st, so come on down and be among the first to see some exciting new artwork for burgeoning valley artisans.

Golfing for good Golfers from all over the Columbia Valley came out to take part in the 2012 Golfathon during the week of June 18th. Golf pros from Windermere Valley Golf Course, Eagle Ranch Resort, and Copper Point’s Ridge Course played to raise money for ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease. The golfers began playing at 5 a.m. at each of the resorts and swung till sundown. At Eagle Ranch Resort, Steve Haggard, Tyler Hawthorne, Carson Wallace and Kris Paul-Clarke came out to play. At Copper Point’s Ridge Course, Brian Schaal, Darren Ottenbreit, Alex Parsons and Scott McClain did their part for the charity. Love is stronger than death

By Reverend Laura Hermakin, Windermere Valley Shared Ministry Following Jesus’ crucifixion, women came to Jesus’ grave. The stone was rolled away and the tomb found empty. Instead of discovering Jesus, they encountered two strangers who asked, “Why do you look for the living one among the dead?”

The resurrection of Christ confirms the truth of the words, “Love is stronger than death.” Love is stronger than fear, uncertainty and the constraints of the human condition.

What would a life look like that embodies this truth?

It might look like a community of people committed to radical hospitality, with respect that honours every individual as a gift of God. It might resemble a way of living with a small footstep, respecting earth, air, fire, water, bread with a pas-

sionate commitment to the protection of vulnerable human life; a way of living committed to rooting out anger and bitterness and moving toward forgiveness.

The love that is the power behind the resurrection is about our being clothed in new garments; clothing of active love, a passion for justice, the commitment to healing and reconciliation.

Love and joy call us to commit ourselves to live into this community which is stirred into being by God’s Holy Spirit. As members of God’s community we are the ones called to proclaim the abundant hope and the ecstatic joy of the living God. We all know what it means to live in some kind of darkness, but can we embrace a life of light and joy and ecstasy? Can we accept ourselves as people so loved by God that there was nothing God would not do for us, including dying, so that we would never really have to?

Just imagine those women that day, coming to the grave to find their beloved friend, teacher and Lord missing.

Imagine the shock, disbelief and horror at wondering what awful things may have been done to him, even in death.

Once they believed that Jesus was raised from the dead, they lived that belief every day, in their priorities, by the ways they treated people, and in the things they stood for — their futures were shaped by a new reality.

Striking a chord As the first Invermere farmers market of the season kicked off on Saturday, June 16th, Marty Beingessner was on hand to entertain the crowds with some acoustic guitar tunes.

The farmers market runs each Saturday morning until September 8th in downtown Invermere. It offers fresh produce, baked goods, arts, crafts, preserves, flowers, bath/beauty products, organic items and more.

Invermere cafeteria gains fame on food blog

By Kelsey Verboom, Pioneer Staff Little ‘ol Invermere stirred up talk this week on a popular food blog abroad, when one local teacher posted a photo of her lunch at the David Thompson Secondary School cafeteria.

Local high school teacher Lainey Wilson regularly follows the increasingly popular food blog of 9-year-old Martha Payne from Scotland. Martha photographs her school cafeteria lunches every day and rates them on her online blog NeverSeconds (www.neverseconds.blogspot. co.uk.), according to things like healthiness, number of hairs found, and how many mouthfuls it takes to eat. She runs the blog as a fundraiser for Mary’s Meals, an organi-

zation that fights world hunger.

When Scotland’s Argyll and Bute Council caught wind of little Martha’s blog this month, they banned her from photographing and posting about her lunches. The media and dedicated readers caught wind of the ban, and the pint-sized blogger was hailed as a hero, and Argyll and Bute Council the villains. The ban was subsequently lifted, and the 9-year-old is again free to post about her school’s food. Since then, her blog has garnered more than six million views.

During the whirlwind of media attention, the Globe and Mail wrote about the blog, using a submitted posting from “a school in Invermere, B.C.” as an example.

Just before the young blogger was temporarily banned,

local teacher Lainey Wilson sent Martha a photo of the Invermere high school cafeteria’s Rocky Mountain Bowl (with grilled tofu) and a piece of pumpkin cheesecake.

“We have an excellent program at our school that prepares students to be cooks/chefs and they are the ones who produce our snacks/meals on a daily basis,” Mrs. Wilson posted. “Their teacher is an inspiration. She is dedicated to local produce and fresh product. All of the greens that are served in the cafeteria are grown in the greenhouse next to the school. We even enjoy fresh lettuce in the winter months!

“I can’t say enough about of wonderful cafeteria.

Teaching kids to cook healthy food at home is a great way to help the next generation,” the posting finished.

Martha, who goes by VEG on her blog, commented on Mrs. Wilson’s post,“I think this is the best dinner I have seen so far and it’s made by students at the school! We are building our own greenhouse in our playground out of old 2-litre plastic bottles. Maybe when we finish it we can eat from it too.”

The cross-ocean online exchange and the popularity of NeverSeconds point to the ever-increasing importance of teaching kids to eat healthy. In a province where cooking programs are regularly getting cut, the chef training program at David Thompson Secondary School is a rare gem.

“I think it’s really important that kids learn respect for good food,” said Alison Bell, who runs the food program at the high school. “The best way to learn that is by example.”

The school’s cafeteria grows and harvests their own produce at the neighbouring community greenhouse and nixes deep fried foods.

“The cafeteria is a key component of our school,” Ms. Bell added. “Not only from a food education standpoint, but it also acts as kind of the hub of our school. It benefits our school in many ways.”
