Family left homeless after water meter mishap ruptures pipe

Ed Crook, his wife, Marie Tourangeau, and two sons Jack and James, are living out of the back of a van and working to dry their ruined possessions after the plumbing system burst as a workman from Neptune Technology Group, contracted by the Regional District of East Kootenay, installed a Smart Meter.

Local riding votes heavily against HST

By Joshua Estabrooks Pioneer Staff In an historic vote, B.C. residents sent a message to their government regarding the Harmonized Sales Tax. When all 1,610,125 ballots were counted, 54.7 per cent of those who voted said yes to extinguishing the tax and wish to revert to the PST/GST system we had before the HST was put in place.

In the Columbia River-Revelstoke riding, a total of 12,462 votes were registered, with 66.19 per cent in favour of extinguishing the HST — one of the strongest ‘yes’ votes in the province.

MLA Norm Macdonald said that the vote indicates that the majority of those engaged in the political process did not like the way the tax was implemented, which goes back to the 2009 election when the now Liberal government said they would not implement the HST. “The broken HST promise was a wake-up call to thousands and thousands of British Columbians,” said Mr. Macdonald. “People were fed up with being lied to and people across the province began to organize them-

selves to fight against the tax.”

This sentiment was echoed by many local business owners, including Invermere-based restaurateur, Mike Smith, who owns Angus McToogle’s. “I was very pleased with the results,” he said. “I don’t think the tax was well thought out. Nobody in the industries most affected were consulted about this and it certainly did affect us.”

Mr. Smith said the way the tax was implemented meant that ordinary people were picking up the majority of the tax burden. He added that hopefully the precedent set by the vote would encourage any future government to truly engage the residents of B.C. before they make any major decisions that could adversely affect them.

Susan Smith, Executive Director of the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce, said that the chamber is disappointed with the outcome of the HST referendum.

In particular, the chamber is concerned about the longterm impact on the local economy.

“The B.C. Chamber has already met with the Premier and Minister Bell regarding the importance of streamlining the transition period from its current 18month horizon. Some sectors will continue to suffer, per-

haps more so than ever, from lengthy delays needed to get the transition right.”

Ms. Smith added that it is now more important than ever to engage local governments in the conversation about the economic growth opportunities for the communities in the valley.

“We are a proponent of the municipal governments working together to hire an economic development officer to look at ways of attracting new businesses and industry to our region. As candidates prepare for the November elections it is our intention to put this issue forward and make sure that economic development is a priority. There is no time to waste: we need politicians with the political will and strength to make good decisions for our economic wellbeing and sustainability.”

Speaking to what happens now, Finance Minister Kevin Falcon said that it would take a minimum of 18 months to reinstate the PST and GST tax system. The government will also have to pay back $1.6 billion in transitional funds provided by the Federal Government, and find a way to plug an $800 million per year shortfall in their annual budget.

Regional tourism project praised in U.S.

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff Top 10 lists are hard to crack, but the Kootenay region has made the list of Top 10 Scenic Drives in the Northern Rockies. The tourism project, which links the Kootenays to areas in the United States and markets the regions as a single travel destination, recently won accolades for its marketing campaign, putting our local area on the map as a top spot to travel.

The Top 10 initiative brings together travel routes for 10 byways and four connecting National Historic Trails in five western states and two provinces. The

routes are mapped out in an Adventure Map, which drivers take with them to reference while they roll along the highway. There are three Canadian routes, one of which is the Hot Springs Circle Tour, which winds through Radium, Invermere, and Fairmont.

Chris Dadson, president of Kootenay Rockies Tourism, the organization that helped market the initiative, said the project makes cross-border travel more accessible to the average tourist.

“The primary goal of our involvement in the Top 10 is to encourage U.S. travelers to view our twonation vacation offerings in a way that celebrates the ease and pleasure of cross-border travel,” he said.

“Too often travel of this nature is perceived as challenging with respect to security and exchange issues.”

People who come here on the Hot Springs Circle Tour often bring their golf clubs or hiking boots and stay in the area, which is an added benefit of the Top 10 program, Mr. Dadson said.

The program earned even more exposure on August 24th, when it won a 2011 Scenic Byway Award in the Marketing category at a national conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

• On August 25th at 5 a.m., the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to a breakand-enter at Mountainside Market in Fairmont Hot Springs. It was reported that the alarm had gone off 25 to 45 minutes prior.

Police discovered that the front sliding door glass had been smashed with a rock. A 24pack of Kokanee beer was taken as well as several quarts of Smirnoff Vodka. Surveillance footage appears to show two First Nations men entering through the broken glass and grabbing the liquor. Both were skinny and had bandanas covering their faces and wore long shorts with T-shirts. They appeared to be 5’8” to 5’10” tall. The men left the scene in an older model minivan. Contact the Columbia Valley RCMP with any information.

• On August 26th, it was reported that a collision had occurred a couple of days earlier when a large, metal cabinet flew out of the back of a trailer while it was being towed by a pickup truck. The cabinet hit a rental vehicle traveling behind the truck. No injuries were sustained, although the vehicle was damaged.

• On August 27th at 8:04 p.m., officers responded to a two-vehicle collision on 7a Avenue, near 15th Street, Invermere. The driver of a Jeep Liberty told police that she had noticed a vehicle coming towards her, partially in her lane. She tried to avoid the vehicle, a Mercedes 190E, but was struck on the drivers side. The female driver of the Mercedes explained that she picked up her phone to check a phone call and drifted into the oncoming lane, hitting the Jeep. There were no injuries but damage is estimated in excess of $5,000. The driver of the Mercedes was issued a violation ticket under the Motor Vehicle Act for use of an electronic device while driving.

• On August 27th, RCMP were on a boat patrol on Lake Windermere when, at approximately 4:05 p.m., they noticed a small, light-coloured fishing boat zig-zagging.

Those on board had no lifejackets on, nor did there appear to be any on board. When police approached the driver he had very slurred speech and stated that he had been drinking all day and had consumed four beers. The officers detained the man for impaired operation of a vessel and took him to the detachment. There he was found

to be more than three times over the legal driving limit and will appear in Invermere Provincial Court in November.

• On August 27th, an officer observed a black Mazda2 with B.C. plates travelling fast, at a estimated 130 km/h. The Genesis radar found the vehicle to be travelling at 135 kilometres per hour in a 90 zone. The speed sign was visible on the flat stretch of road, just south of Dry Gulch. The driver, when pulled over, admitted to travelling too fast and was worried that he was going to lose his licence as he was a new driver.

His vehicle was towed and a $368 fine laid.

• On August 28th, an Edgewater resident noticed an open door and a broken window on the south side of the Edgewater Elementary School building. RCMP members responded and discovered that, in addition to the broken window, there was a television broken in the library and two different sets of dusty footprints on a map, from approximately size 10 or 11 shoes. The window in the main office door was broken as well as windows to the storage room and the principal’s office. The only article taken was a gumball machine from outside the building. The officers noted multiple drops of blood on the ground in the hallway and a small amount of blood on a piece of glass. The glass was seized and two blood samples taken. Anyone with information should contact the detachment.

• On August 29th, at around 2:15 a.m., police conducted a traffic stop on the corner of 12th Avenue and 2nd Street, Invermere to check for impaired driving. A Chevrolet pickup truck driver stated that he had left his driver’s licence at home, but a check revealed that he was in fact banned from driving as of August 22nd. The driver was charged for driving while prohibited and issued an appearance notice to attend court.

• On August 29th, the detachment was notified that a business had been broken into on Alpine Road, Windermere. Police discovered that the front door to the shed had been pried open, as well as a second door inside. A five-gallon Jerrycan was stolen. It was filled with mix fuel and has noticeable wear on the front, fading the orange colour to pink. Also missing is a 171 red power saw and a green power drill, total value approximately $1,000.

Now that’s forward-thinking

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff Too often, people only take action when there’s threat of an immediate consequence. It takes a special kind of foresight to recognize a potential future problem and put a plan in motion to help reduce the issue.

The board of directors at the Groundswell Network Society and the District of Invermere deserve kudos for anticipating issues with waste removal — issues that may not become an imminent problem with real consequences for years to come — and starting to explore ideas like the pilot compost project discussed on page 8 of this edition.

The concept of curbside composting is a great one.

Taking an entire community’s worth of potential garbage and turning it into reusable material that benefits local soil is smart and sustainable.

In fact, the initiative is so forward-thinking that Groundswell and the district may find they are a bit further ahead of the game than most residents. Some people still don’t even recycle, let alone compost.

Too often, projects like the composting initiative stall or stutter because people don’t yet have to think about it. Our garbage dumps aren’t yet overflowing to the point of encroaching on a neighbourhood, so residents might take a noncommittal approach to the whole thing.

It would be an absolute shame for the composting initiative to fail because of lackadaisical thinking. This is a great opportunity for residents to be able to reduce their own waste while having someone else worry about animal-proofing the compost area.

It may take a little community help to get the project off the ground, but in the end, it should benefit everyone. However, residents can only get as much out of it as they put in. To take a first step, fill out an information-gathering survey for Groundswell and the District of Invermere by going to www.invermere.net or www. groundswellnetwork.ca.

Letter offends veterans Dear Editor: In response to Mr. Ark’s letter ‘Royal prefix has no place in Canada’ in the August 26th edition.

I recently had some veterans approach me and share their frustrations in regards to comments in his letter. First of all, the only reason a letter like his can be written and published is because veterans have fought, died, or become disabled in battle.

Their sacrifices ensured that freedom of expression and freedom of the press would be maintained for us and him to enjoy.

Recent veterans of the Canadian Forces are

deeply respected by us older veterans, and although some of them may not prefer the ‘Royal’ prefix, that’s fine and respected, as they paid their dues in service.

All people are entitled to their opinion; however, what’s not respected is when civilians who have not paid their dues in service react so strongly in slamming the Queen, the country, and, whether it’s realized or not, slamming dedicated veterans for being proud to serve under a Royal banner.

No room for excuses Dear Editor: It was great to read the recent letters about economic development for the valley. Mayor Gerry Taft and Mr. David Pacey are focusing on great future values for the area. However, I also can’t seem to share their views about tourism industry.

I share more the views of Nick Berzins’ positive look at the tourism industry.

I believe it is time to start looking at what we have. This amazing area isn’t just to be ignored or easily forgotten. People who travel here admire the beauty of what makes this area paradise. There is no room for excuses about why tourism isn’t a great industry here.

The transition from the current second-homeowner industry to a fully developed tourism industry isn’t difficult or complicated. Only a few steps need attention to follow this transition: 1) Increase marketing of this area in Canada and overseas.

2) Foster a closer relationship between the District of Invermere and the Regional District East Kootenay, their

chamber of commerce and all their local businesses related to the tourism industry.

Also, research guest opinion and feedback as well as positively support great solutions to allow maximum guest experience, which will ensure new and returning visitors to the area.

3) Add on to existing events and create new events in all aspects of this area including Nature and its seasons, sports, music, culture and arts, towns and their downtown areas and town parks.

Looking around to see what we already have will make us realize that all it takes is to build on the existing base of local tourism industry or second-homeowner industry that we are blessed with.

Making these positive steps will bring more recognition to the area, and make it even more desirable, consequently growing the area economically.

Look around and see what you see; you are in paradise and now is the time to show that it is paradise.

Reader urges secondhomeowners to volunteer Dear Editor: On August 27th I attended the open house for the CPR Day Lodge fundraiser and was most impressed by the effort made by volunteers to preserve this historic building, in order for it to be used for valley functions. I was so impressed that I volunteered that day to sit on the board overseeing its restoration and function.

It occurred to me that there are so many willing and (often) overlooked volunteers in Invermere and the Columbia Valley. We who are owners of second, getaway homes here often take for granted these sometimes overworked people; the ambulance attendants, the firemen, the library workers, the tourist information booth workers, or just the person on the street giving directions; some of whom

are never paid for their efforts.

I must admit I am as guilty as the rest of the part-timers who enjoy the beauty of the country and its amenities without giving much thought to how and by whom they have been provided. Now, I realize the difficulties in volunteering, but it can be done. Can we not spare a little time while we are here to help, if only for a few hours?

Think of the benefits. We will get to know our neighbours, for there are wonderful people here. We can see parts of the country we never knew existed. We could have the satisfaction of saying, “I helped with that.”

Give it a thought, for even a second home is a home.

Pilot program explores curbside composting

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff The District of Invermere and Groundswell Network Society are teaming up to explore the possibility of making rotten into riches with a new idea that could bring curbside composting to Invermere.

The composting initiative is still in its earliest stages and nothing has yet been decided, but the district and Groundswell (previously the Columbia Valley Botanical Gardens and Centre for Sustainable Living) are currently conducting a survey to gain a better understanding of if, how, and how much Invermerians compost.

The data gleaned from the survey will help indicate whether curbside composting could be a logistically and economically viable exercise. If so, the overall vision would be for Groundswell to run the composting initiative, use some of the resulting compost in the community greenhouse, and sell the rest to gardeners and landscapers.

“We want to know if we can generate a product that we could sell on the market, and use those funds to run educational programs at the community greenhouse,” said Bill Swan, a board member of Groundswell. “If we can turn a so-called waste product into a local benefit, we see that as a real positive.”

The average household garbage bag contains 30-40 per cent compostable material, Mr. Swan said.

“If we can work as a community to reduce that, it would really be beneficial to everyone.”

As part of the composting initiative, Mr. Swan will be hosting a $10 course through the College of the Rockies on September 20th called Rot On! He will be teach-

ing participants how to build and manage an effective composting system, and how to integrate the compost back into their gardens.

This course, as well as a course on September 30th about using drip-irrigation in gardens, are also part of a larger project that Groundswell plans to move forward with. With help from the District of Invermere and Columbia Basin Trust, Groundswell have designed a community garden to be situated beside the community greenhouse, which is located behind the high school.

Right now the lot is undeveloped and weed-ridden, but the society has plans to eventually build a lush oasis with community plots, picnic areas, a compost centre, a pond, places to display local art, and even a small stage with bleachers.

“This garden would be a place where people could come to garden, learn new gardening techniques, and convene with other gardeners — really, the essence of a community garden. We see it as an important sustainable community food source, an intergenerational meeting place, and a place to learn,” Mr. Swan said. “But before we build a healthy garden, we need great compost.”

The first phase of the community garden will be building an animal-proof fence, developing the compost initiative, and eventually installing an irrigation system.

For now, Mr. Swan said, what they need the most is community input. Anyone can fill out the current survey online by going to www.invermere.net or www.groundswellnetwork.ca. Movie Review: The Conspirator Reviewed by Joshua Estabrooks You gotta love it when Hollywood tries to put its spin on an historical event. It usually means many of the details are brushed over and sanitized for mass consumption, and any of the really interesting intricacies lost in the bravado needed to hold the attention of a relatively disinterested audience.

Robert Redford tried his best in this latest offering to the home video world, but The Conspirator falls short on details, storyline and audience engagement. We all know what happens in the end (much like watching Titanic) so it is imperative that the characters, dialogue, and cinematography are top notch. This justifies spending two hours watching something about an event we all know well.

Needless to say that all of the above elements fall short on The Conspirator, leaving viewers scratching their

heads as to why the film made it into their DVD player.

The story centers around Mary Surratt, played by Robin Wright, who was accused, convicted of, and executed for conspiring to assassinate Abraham Lincoln.

The courtroom drama centres on whether or not she actually took part in the conspiracy, or just happened to own the establishment where much of the planning took place. Her son, John Surratt, is the real conspirator, but by fleeing the city and evading capture he ends up sending his mother to the gallows.

Surratt’s lawyer, played by Kevin Kline, is a young idealist who reluctantly takes the case, only to find he is so enraged by the corrupt military court that it lights a fire under his desire to seek true justice for his client.

The cast shows moments of promise, primarily in the courtroom scenes, but they seem to be talking cardboard cutouts in the rest of the film. The scenes within

the military tribunal are really the only ones with any sense of drama or purpose, while the rest attempt to fill in the blanks with disinteresting dialogue and creepy attempts at dramatic music.

This movie is watchable, don’t get me wrong, and I bet a lot of people will be blown away by it; otherwise it wouldn’t have made Mr. Redford close to $4 million at the box office. But for those viewers like me, who are seeking something unconventional, different and new — a fresh approach to filmmaking — The Conspirator just feels stale and uninteresting at every turn. Sorry Mr. Redford, but you’re no Clint Eastwood yet.

A whopping 1,000 art works are up for sale – all of it donated by local artists, businesses, residents and second homeowners.

“When we called for donations, we tapped into a huge vein of hidden art being stored in basements, garages and attics all over the Columbia Valley,” said Event Manager Elinor Florence.

Book review: The Man Who Loved China Reviewed by Cameron Berry The Windermere Valley Gentlemen Readers’ Society Author Simon Winchester, who has popularized science — particularly the earth sciences and geography — in earlier books such as The Map that Changed the World, Krakatoa and A Crack in the Edge of the World, turns to a biographical format to chronicle the amazing life of Dr. Joseph Needham, a brilliant but eccentric Oxford professor, in his recent book, The Man who Loved China.

The first iron was cast in 500 BC, the world’s first book was printed in 868 AD, and the first gunpowder was made in 900 AD. One would assume that these major discoveries and advancements in science and communication would have occurred in Western Europe, given the significance of these events in the evolution of western society. China, it turns out, was the locale for these crucial inventions and many other breakthroughs in medicine, agriculture and manufacturing.

Needham, an avid socialist and womanizer, spent

most of his long life cataloguing Chinese inventions.

Married to a well-known Oxford colleague, Dorothy Needham, for more than 60 years, he openly had a 50year liaison with Lu Gweidjen, his brilliant Chinese academic associate, whom he married at age 88, immediately following the death of Dorothy.

Although Needham’s extracurricular activities provided another dimension to his character, he is known for his profound investigation of early Chinese science, which resulted in the seventeen-volume Science and Civilization in China, the greatest one-man encyclopaedia ever written.

Fluent in Mandarin Chinese, Needham arrived in Chongqing in 1943 under very difficult circumstances.

Vast areas of China were under Japanese occupation; however, Needham managed to travel extensively, visiting and obtaining British and American funding for the struggling academic community. His hair-raising travels and near conflicts with the occupation forces makes for fascinating reading.

Over the course of his career he had a number of trips to China. He befriended Zhou Enlai and Mao Zedong after the communist takeover in the late 1940s and was the recipient of a number of Chinese honours and awards. As the Cold War between the West and Russia and China heated up, he naively let himself be used as a stooge for the Chinese and North Korean regimes, which caused him severe embarrassment. He was ostracized for a number of years by his Oxford peers and the British government of the day.

Having a scientific background, I thoroughly enjoyed this book but caution that it is not a page-turner as a mystery novel might be. Winchester is an excellent writer and the text flows easily as he takes us through the life of Needham. With China now becoming such a significant player on the world stage, this book is an excellent insight into this emerging nation, which essentially closed its doors to the world for almost 500 years.

Artym Gallery celebrates 10 years of art

Artym Gallery owners, Grey Bradatsch and Connie Artym-Bradatsch will be celebrating their art gallery’s 10th anniversary on September 2nd.

One decade ago, the couple sold everything they owned and were going to open either a restaurant or an art gallery, when fate nudged them to the Columbia Valley.

They moved from Calgary to Invermere, and the rest, they say, is history. During the 10 years Artym has been open, it has gained an international reputation within the art world, culminating in an invitation to attend a national art gala hosted by Governor General Michaelle Jean at Rideau Hall in Ottawa. Only two art galleries were invited to attend.

By Joshua Estabrooks Pioneer Staff Professional photographer, Kimberley Rae Sanderson, got hooked on taking pictures when she was six years old. She moved to Invermere from Edmonton in 2003, and instantly fell in love with the scenery and the people. She just recently opened a photography studio and custom framing shop in early August, and is looking forward to serving the valley’s photography and framing needs with friendly service and attention to detail that is second to none. Her studio is located behind Gone Hollywood Video in Invermere, and already business has been good, she said.

Ms. Sanderson got to know the tricks of the photography trade by apprenticing with professional photographers up and down the west coast, and found that she had a real passion for commercial, architectural and portrait photography.

“I’m very technical,” she said. “I like moulding and moving the light. I love it when I capture a moment in time. We live in such a fast-paced world that when we see an image that captures a deeper sense of someone or something we allow ourselves the time to contemplate and ponder.”

Being a photographer first, Ms. Sanderson knows the importance of having quality printing and framing services available locally, which is why she offers a full range of printing and framing options, including canvas.

She uses Larson Juhl frames and mats because they have a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, are high quality products and have reasonable price points.

Her portrait studio is still evolving in the new space, but she can handle pretty much any portrait idea her clients’ imagination can come up with, either in studio or on location. And when all is said and done they can leave with that portrait printed and framed in a variety of options that will suit any taste and budget.

Ms. Sanderson can also organize photos into a coffee table book for her clients, touch up and restore old photographs, connect with woodworkers for completely custom frames and make prints as wide as 44 inches, which is unique to the Columbia Valley, she said.

“There are lots of creative options for displaying a photograph if you don’t want to just hang it on your wall. I’m always willing to work with anyone on any idea they may have.”

Salmon Festival coming soon to Fairmont

This inaugural festival is being hosted by the Canadian Columbia River Inter-tribal Fisheries Commission and the Ktunaxa and Secwepemc Nations, in partnership with the Columbia Wetland Stewardship Partnership and the Fairmont Trails Society.

The mission of the festival is to inform people about the history and future of salmon in the Upper Columbia, and their cultural significance. On offer will be events and activities

in the Invermere and Fairmont areas including youth salmon awareness trips, guest speakers, charity golf tournament, the Salmon Monument celebrations and a final Gala Salmon Dinner with celebrity chef David Wolfman.

This historic event will involve First Nations and U.S. tribe political leaders, federal, provincial and local leaders, members of the Ktunaxa, Okanagan and Shuswap First Nations and local residents.

Many people in the valley have forgotten the role that salmon played in the Upper Columbia prior to the construction of Grand Coulee dam in 1942. Before that time Chinook Salmon spawned in the Upper Columbia, many of them in the river right below the

TXN Installations has been operating in Invermere for 13 years, providing structural steel, steel components and architectural steel details including stairs and railings for the construction industry.

Not only is TXN a steel fabricator, they also offer installation and a mobile welding service, with their seven person full-time crew including three welders, a fabricator, machinist and an ironworker/erector — all trade qualified Red Seal journeymen.

After a steady increase in demand for structurally-approved steel work, owner Shane McKay and his team are expanding the business, starting with the creation of a full catalogue of many commonly requested structural steel component parts for use in the timber frame and general construction industry.

“The plan is to create a catalogue of products and distribute them for people to order or use as a point of reference if they aren’t quite sure what part they need,” said Dave Weatherhead, who is leading the sales side of the business as they expand.

“That way we have the drawings for standard components and the ability to make them very quickly and affordably.”

Expanding now, during an economic downturn, will place TXN and their clients in a very strong position when the anticipated upturn arrives, explained Shane. Making standard parts will free up the team to design exceptional products in demand elsewhere.

In addition to standard parts, TXN can also entirely custom make steel components to solve any construction need, as well as offering design, construction and installation of large steel pieces including custom-built staircases and railings.

They are also the only Canadian Welding Bureau certified company in the valley, to CSA Standard W47.1, a requirement of the building code for steelwork in commercial, industrial and residential applications.

Working in collaboration with local draftsman Tomaz Stich, TXN are able to offer technical drawings for complex projects, giving clients an immediate idea of how the end product will look and a set of technical specifications for the shop to work with.

Vancouver Canuck signs for skaters Pioneer Staff Local skaters and hockey players were treated to a one-on-one visit by Vancouver Canuck Mason Raymond, when he stopped by to help open The Garage, a new dryland training facility for local skaters that is the first of its kind in the region.

The 7,500 square foot facility is located near Dry Gulch on 10 acres of land, and will offer both indoor and outdoor training specific to all types of skaters. The two-level refurbished garage holds exercise equipment designed to target on-ice skills.

The facility is a joint venture of local personal trainers, Lexi McIntosh and Tamela Hart, who said they hope the new workout centre will bring a high-quality level of instruction at a price that’s affordable to all parents. The Garage has signed on to train the Columbia Valley Rockies hockey team, and is in talks with a number of other teams who regularly hit the ice to train.

On August 28th, Mason Raymond visited with local hockey players and signed autographs, including his own NHL stick and jersey, to help with the facility.

“Mason was so generous and so kind,” Lexi said. “It was a really nice way to celebrate the upcoming season.”

Killer Rollbots skate hard in Cranbrook Invermere’s own Killer Rollbots rolled into Marysville on Saturday, August 27th for the inaugural bout of the East Kootenay Roller Derby League. The event was called “Sucker Punch” and tickets were completely sold out. The Killer Rollbots took on Cranbrook’s Mountain Town Maulers. In the end the Killer Rollbots lost the hard-fought match 173-111, but the event highlighted the potential of roller derby’s future in the Columbia Valley.

First river cleanup a success

September 2, 2011

By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff The first Annual Backyard Columbia River Cleanup took place in Fairmont Hot Springs on August 29th, netting a total of nine bags of garbage pulled from the river and shoreline beside Riverside Golf Course.

A modest crew of locals met with organizer Jocelyn MacGregor at Spruce Grove Campground and set out down the river with boats,

snorkels, wetsuits and garbage bags.

“There’s so much garbage that builds up during each summer,” Ms. MacGregor explained. “I understand sometimes it’s an accident when people lose cans and bottles in the water, but perhaps this effort will encourage people to rethink their “can plan” when floating down the river.”

Along with a bicycle, the cleanup crews found a myriad of cans, bottles, golf balls, plastic and other garbage. Their most unusual

find was a message in a bottle, placed there by a young resident of Columere Park.

“It was a thoughtful message about solving world hunger,” Ms. MacGregor added.

“We couldn’t leave it in the river because it was in a plastic container, but we did get the message.”

The plan is to turn the river cleanup into an annual event at the end of each summer, to keep the river and its banks clean for all of the wildlife and visitors who enjoy it.

Local returns from a year in France

By Joshua Estabrooks Pioneer Staff High school student, Martina Shovar, recently returned from an 11-month adventure in France as part of the Rotary Youth Exchange program. She had 16 countries to choose from, France being her second choice behind Italy.

Miss Shovar said France was high on her list, as she really wanted to expand her knowledge and use of the language.

During her time in the country she lived with four different host families in urban and rural settings, so she got a real feel for the various lifestyles within France.

Upon arriving, Ms. Shovar said it took a little while to get used to the different accents, but once she got the hang of it, the six years of French language she took in school really helped her get a head start.

The school she attended didn’t really have any special treatment for exchange students, so she was forced to dive into the language and figure out a lot of the school work on her own.

Because of this, her focus shifted from trying to pass all of her courses with high marks to just trying to be social and master the language, which she said she

felt was the better option.

“I’m really glad I went with Rotary because they encouraged me not to stress out about the school work and to focus on making friends and learning the language,” she said. “Had I been sitting at a desk reading books all day I wouldn’t have learned as much French.”

The schools are much more strict in France, and the students take their schooling much more seriously then they do in North America, Ms. Shovar said.

“It was more university-style, where the teacher would speak and we just wrote everything down. For the first couple of months I was scared to ask to go to the washroom because no one else did. It took me a little while to get used to it.”

Being a member of the Akisqnuk First Nation added a twist to her experience, she said, as a lot of the Europeans she came across didn’t really have a concept of First Nations people.

“I brought my regalia over with me and I danced for my host families and spoke about my heritage.

When I told people that I was Native, I would say Indian and they thought I was from India.”

Settling back into life in Invermere wasn’t as hard as Ms. Shovar thought it would be, but she is planning to move back to France when she finishes Grade 12 to work as an au pair.

Pioneer Classifieds s obituary s James Ralph Johnston January 30, 1917 -- August 18, 2011 James Ralph Johnston, died of age related causes on August 18, 2011, at the age of 94. Ralph is survived by his wife Caroline; and former wife Joan; sister Joy; daughters Lynne and Trish; sister-in-law, Dietmar; step-children Douglas, Judy, Jay, Nancy; Susan, David and Stephen; grandchildren Allison, Jordan, Courtenay, Simon and Kurt and greatgrandchildren Grace, Joy, Addison, Zion and Eden as well as many other extended family members and friends. He was pre-deceased by his sister Doreen, former wife Rhoda and daughter Sheila.

Ralph was born on January 30, 1917, and raised in the Invermere valley. His family homesteaded “Comfort Ranch” until 1926, when they moved into Invermere when Henry Ford had made breeding carriage horses unprofitable. Graduating from high school in 1935, Ralph set off to the University of British Columbia where, he graduated from UBC with a degree in Forestry Engineering. He was immediately hired by the B.C. Forest Service.

In 1942, Ralph joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, where he served in Manitoba, training young navigators for the concerted bombing raids over Germany rather than flying overseas as he had planned.

After his military service, Ralph returned to the B.C. Forest Service rising through the ranks to serve as Assistant District Forester in Kamloops and District Forest Manager in Prince Rupert, Nelson and Kamloops, until retiring in Kamloops after 40 years of service.

A consummate outdoorsman, he delighted in sharing his love of nature and vast knowledge of the natural world with his family. As a result, none of us will ever light a campfire with more than one match or have an artificial Christmas tree and most of us know how to find tiny, wild strawberries and can name several species of conifers.

In his retirement years, Ralph was a square dancing enthusiast. He also enjoyed his many years of Rotary Club fellowship and supported its international mission. A life-long believer, he was a regular attendee of both the Salvation Army and Hills of Peace Lutheran churches.

His family extends heartfelt thanks to all the staff at Berwick for their excellent, expert, and loving care of Ralph in his last year. Ralph’s funeral will be held at Hills of Peace Lutheran Church in Kamloops at 11 a.m., on September 3, 2011. A reception at the church will immediately follow the service. Ralph was a strong proponent of charitable giving; in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the donor’s favourite charity.

Second Cook

The Second Cook at Panorama Mountain Village holds the key to the financial success of a food service operation. The successful candidate must be able to work unattended in both a production atmosphere, and on some stations in the resort kitchens. This position requires basic butchery, sauce production, and salad preparation. Reporting directly to the Sous Chef, you must work well in a team environment and understand the need to maintaining a clean, organized work station.

Essential Functions: • Monitor all food in preparation and storage daily, to avoid spoilage • Follow recipe manual guide strictly to achieve consistency in portion and taste • Prepare sufficient food quantities to meet business demands • Ensure that each item leaving the kitchen has been accurately billed or requisitioned • Explain the preparation of dishes/ specials to the service staff in a clear manner • Achieve high standards of taste and presentation in each dish • To treat each dish as if you were serving it to your family (take pride) • To work with a sense of fun and animation in order to contribute to the guest experience • Ability to work some hot stations of the kitchens of the resort • To constantly push personal skills forward • Dedication to the highest quality with every plate leaving the kitchen at any time • Proficiently set the day’s station for service • Ensure adherence to provincial health and safety standards Experience / Qualifications: • 2+ years progressive experience in the Kitchen • Basic Knife Set * Please inquire during interview if you do not have your own • Experience in working some stations of a multiple outlet operation • Basic knowledge of the operation of Catering/Conventions • Great people skills, fun, energetic, out going • Able to stand for long periods of time • Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

Be a people-builder

By Pastor Wayne Frater Radium Christian Fellowship A few weeks ago I was feeling somewhat discouraged.

I don’t know if you have ever been somewhat discouraged, but on this particular day, I was going through some things.

I didn’t say anything to anybody, but as I was talking to someone from the church, they, being in the Word, pointed out what David said in Psalm 18:1 NLT: “I love you Lord; you are my strength.” And as I read on, verses two and three said: “The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety. I called on the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and He saved me from my enemies.”

I was encouraged, and like David, I began to think of all the great things the Lord has done in my life: salvation, protection, blessing upon blessing.

David cries out to God, and tells Him, “I love you Lord.” Those words should start each day for us; we should realize that it is all about Jesus, and what He did for us. He is our strength, our rock, our fortress, our de-

liverer, our refuge, our shield, and our place of safety.

Not only should we start each day realizing what Jesus did for us, but we should also be telling others.

We should be building those around us up; we should be encouraging one another in the Word. There are times when we all need encouragement, and ultimately the Lord is our great encourager. But if we want to be really blessed, encourage somebody today.

Romans 15:1,2 NLT: “We who are strong must be considerate of those who are sensitive about things like this. We must not please ourselves. We should help others do what is right and build them up in the Lord.”

Romans 15:5,6 NLT: “May God, who gives this patience and encouragement, help you live in complete harmony with each other, as is fitting for followers of Christ Jesus. Then all of you can join together with one voice, giving praise and glory to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Psalm 18:46 David says, “The Lord lives! Praise to my Rock! May the God of my salvation be exalted!”

And my prayer for you today is Paul’s prayer from Romans 15:13: “I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.”

From that overflow, be a people-builder. Be encouraged, then encourage.
