As the sun was rising on the morning of Friday, November 5th, Columbia Valley RCMP, Invermere Fire Department, and B.C. Ambulance were called to a single-vehicle accident on Westside Road near Ruault Road.

A north-bound white Dodge pickup rolled and collided with a large tree after failing to negotiate a sharp left curve in the road.

The driver, a 35-year-old man from Canal Flats, was rescued from the vehicle after the Invermere Fire Department rescue crew cut the roof from his truck.

He was tended to and carried up an embankment to a waiting ambulance.

The main was airlifted to Calgary after first being stabilized at the hospital in Invermere.

Lot 48 vote granted one-year extension

By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff A decision may be forthcoming on Fairmont’s controversial Lot 48, after the owners revealed a glimpse of their plans for the land at a Regional District meeting on Friday, November 5th.

Coming before the board of Regional Directors to apply for a one-year extension to finalize an agreement, owners Carol and Don Seable revealed that negotiations are underway to sell the lot to an unnamed conservation organization.

Carol Seable asked the Board on Friday to postphone their decision to re-zone the land to allow sale negotiations to continue uninterrupted.

“We believe that we have come up with a solution for the land that should please everyone,” Mrs. Seable said, appealing to the board of directors to give them the time needed to finalize the agreement.

The Board responded by delaying until November

2011 any further consideration on Bylaws 1880 and 1881, which would see the land downzoned from Resort Development to Rural Resource.

“This is a very important issue, a very important piece of land,” commented Director Gerry Taft. “I am very encouraged by what is happening and I really hope that it is successful. If it takes one year or two years or however long, I think it’s worth the time to have the right outcome.”

The long-running debate over Lot 48 began in 2005 when Fairmont Hot Springs Resort, then owned by the Wilder family, put forward a controversial plan to build a 630-unit golf resort on the lot.

In response, the precedent-setting bylaws to downzone the land were proposed at a Regional District meeting by then Area F Director Martin Cullen in November 2005.

A decision on these bylaws has been delayed since then, originally for site planning and then due to the sale of Fairmont Hot Springs Resort by the Wilders.

Ken Fowler Enterprises purchased the resort in September 2006, immediately withdrawing plans for the multi-million dollar complex on Lot 48.

The Regional District then granted further extensions to allow the new owners to reach an agreement with the Ktunaxa Nation, for whom the east side of Columbia Lake holds a spiritual significance, along with a number of archaeological sites.

In September 2009, the ownership of Lot 48 reverted back to the Wilder family, after the three-year term placed on the purchase of the lot expired. They have been working since then to come up with a suitable solution for the land.

“The Board has been a strong advocate for the protection of Lot 48’s environmental and cultural values,” said Board Chair, Scott Manjak, at Friday’s meeting.

“We are very encouraged to hear that the owners are engaged in discussions with a national organization that purchases properties for long term conservation, and that a sale agreement may soon be finalized.”

Water and sewage rates disputed at RDEK meeting

By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff Rohit Group, the owners of Copper Point Resort, are disputing an increase in the annual cost of sewage disposal rates from provider Windermere Water and Sewer Company Ltd. Appearing before the Regional District board of directors on Friday, November 5th, Russell Dauk, the group’s vice-president of land and communities, called the proposed annual rate offered by the company “unsustainable.”

When Rohit was presented the annual costs from Windermere Water and Sewer for this year, the rate increased from $81,000 to more than $265,000, Mr. Dauk said.

“We understood that this project would be more expensive than others,” Mr. Dauk added. “$81,000 made sense to us even though it was high ... the proposed rates are unsustainable.”

While water rates in the area are controlled by the province’s Comptroller of Water Rights, sewage rates are not regulated, leaving service providers to establish a suitable annual charge.

“We have made a commitment to residents that their water and sewer rates will stay the same,” said Paul Partlo, Windermere Water and Sewer’s president. “However, we assess the cost for companies as to how many residences the use is equivalent to.”

The difference in rates between water and sewage is due to the increased cost of treating waste water to make it potable, Mr. Partlo explained to the board.

The utility company was called before the Regional District to explain issues of water provision to properties on Windermere’s Swansea Road, particularly that of Jim and Dawn MacKinnon, who are looking to subdivide their property into five lots.

The MacKinnons refused to pay more than the $3,500 per water tie-in permitted by the B.C. Comptroller of Water Rights.

Parr Utilities was attempting to charge an upfront fee of $13,500, allowing for an increase in their rates which was still awaiting approval, with the condition that any additional money would be immediately returned if the charges were not approved.

The MacKinnons have since made alternative arrangements and Parr Utilities has adjusted the tie-in rate to $3,500.

Cow Catcher correction After viewing the police write-up on the roaming cow on the road last week, I was approached by Corporal Grant Simpson who demanded I make a correction.

In the write-up I mistakenly stated that Cpl. Simpson had no cow catching experience, hence he had been unable to locate and capture the cow.

Cpl. Simpson took some offence at being identified as having no experience in this field of police work. In fact he informed me that due to his work in Chase and other small detachments in farming country, he indeed does have a great deal of expertise and experience in cow catching.

He demanded a correction. I had given him an excuse in my original story by explaining he had no experience, hence no luck catching the cow. I can only conclude then that although he has some experience he’s just no good at it, at least on the specific date in question.

I hope this correction is found to be favorable to Cpl. Simpson. I also implore his friends and hockey buddies to quit making fun of his ordeal. I also expect

• On November 4th, at 12:15 p.m., a citizen phoned the police after seeing an unsafe tractor trailer carrying a load of logs that appeared to be ready to tip over. Officers located the vehicle and with the assistance of a commercial vehicle inspector found the trailer to be defective and the load insecure and too dangerous for the road. The trailer was towed to an inspection facility. The driver was charged with an insecure load.

• On November 6th, at 12:40 a.m., as a result of a vehicle check on Athalmer Road, a 47-year-old man from Radium was issued a 90-day driving prohibition.

His 1989 Ford F-150 pickup was impounded for 30 days. The driver was also charged with driving without a driver’s licence or insurance.

• On November 6th, at 5:25 a.m., Columbia Valley police received a complaint of a highly intoxicated man causing a disturbance at the Best Western. Police attended and arrested a 22-year-old from Chase and lodged him in cells overnight. The man was charged with drunkenness in a public place.

• On November 7th, at 12:10 a.m., RCMP responded to a complaint of a man kicking and doing damage to a 2009 GMC pickup. The complaint was a result of a verbal confrontation. A 28-year-old man from Canal Flats was charged with mischief as a result.

RCMP faces unmet demand for two more members

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff Columbia Valley RCMP will not be getting the two additional members they’ve been approved for due to a lack of available funding from the province.

“I would like to remind the people in the valley that although this detachment has long been identified to receive two more provincial members, given the discussions I have been privy to, the additional police officers will not be coming in the near future,” Staff Sgt. Marko Shehovac explained to Radium council during a presentation on November 4th.

While the Columbia Valley is still a high priority for future members, given the economic climate, not much is expected to change for now, Staff Sgt. Shehovac added.

Currently, the detachment has eight constables, two corporals, and one staff sergeant. The 11 members are responsible for policing a population of 10,725, compared to Golden and Revelstoke, where 11 members are responsible for populations of about 7,300.

Similarly, Columbia Valley RCMP handles case loads of 83 per member each year, while Golden’s officers have 58 cases each, and Revelstoke’s 63.

“The statistics don’t consider that

our population in the summer from June to September can go as high as 50,000,” Staff Sgt. Shehovac added.

When the valley’s population swells with summer revelers, the policing load also increases, sometimes stretching the members’ time and abilities thin.

Although the current member strength is dealing with the work load, additional officers would create more effective policing, Staff Sgt. Shehovac said.

“If the case load per member dropped, we could be more proactive.

We are fortunate that we have young, energetic members who will go out and hunt work down, but we can do a much better job with additional officers.”

Radium, which no longer has an officer paid for by the municipality, as was tried last year, will not receive a replacement officer from the province as hoped, again due to funding.

“The impact on the detachment and the community unfortunately will be felt,” Staff Sgt. Shehovac told Radium council. “More so during the summer months when the demand on the detachment is at its greatest. Decisions in the future will have to be made on how to compensate for the loss of this additional member. Some services during our busy months may have to be dropped from the table.”

Big shoes to fill

It is with a great sense of excitement I step into the role of editor. I’ve enjoyed every moment at The Pioneer as a reporter, and I look forward to whatever new challenges my role as editor will bring. A string of talented editors has gone before me, and I plan to work diligently to reach the bar they have set.

I’ve recently been taking care of a room full of orchids, and I’m sure the lessons I’ve gleaned while tending to these demanding blossoms with my nongreen thumb will serve me well at the newspaper.

I’ve learned to pay close attention to detail, to not go over deadline, and to not loose my cool if something doesn’t look quite right.

When I started caring for the orchids a month ago, I was terrified of letting air escape from the temperature and humidity controlled room. I would carefully part the sliding door to allow only my body through, and jump inside, slamming the door shut behind me.

Forest Initiative is looking for volunteers Dear Editor: The Columbia Headwaters Community Forest Initiative has reached a point where the Steering Committee requires participation from the local community, in the form of volunteer help and input.

The committee is currently active with drawing up governance documents for how a board would run a community forest, the drafting of a business plan and future information sessions throughout the communities. There is also the on-going research of the timber and non-timber values within the study area which a community forest could manage.

Ah – so what are we looking for in

a volunteer? Quite simply people from across the communities willing to enter into meaningful participation in the establishment of a community forest.

We are hosting a meeting on November 17th from 7–9 p.m. at the District of Invermere Council Chambers for those who want to assist.

Those who are not quite sure and wish further clarification before becoming involved, I encourage you to join us as well.

Tourism won’t solve economic problems Dear Editor: Continued reliance on tourism is not the answer to the economics that currently plague the valley.

No one can deny the situation in the valley is deteriorating: construction activity is way down, Delta no longer flies into Cranbrook, the Columbia Valley Employment Centre is scheduled to be shut down, services at the school have been cut and teaching roles will likely be the next to go, and the good people at Kicking Horse Ford have closed their sales office.

Clearly this is not the sign of an improving economy.

I like Mike Meadus, but I have to disagree: increasing dependence on the major business for the valley is not going to turn things around.

A couple of weeks ago, David Ratzlaff explained that the wages he pays his 17 full-time employees help them to buy homes and new cars. He is bang on.

A large resort will generate a large number of construction jobs followed by the service and supply roles needed to maintain the facility and its customers during operation. Investment dollars and increased tourism will improve the financial situation of the valley ­­— it’s a no-brainer.

Residents of the valley have a right to chose how they want to live. It’s important, though, to be realistic with respect to what the potential ramifications are of those decisions.

Jumbo decision drags on

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff After almost 20 years, the final word on Jumbo Glacier Resort has yet to come, despite numerous rumours a decision would be announced during this year’s summer months.

The decision currently rests with the provincial government, who have experienced some political surprises in recent weeks when Premier Gordon Campbell announced his resignation.

Premier Campbell’s step-down will slow the decision making process, according to Invermere councilor and a director of the Jumbo Creek Conservation Society Bob Campsall.

“I have to say, I think it will postpone things for a while before anything happens, simply because of the turmoil and confusion within the government,” he said.

“There’s so much at stake for them right now.

Why would they want to jump in the middle of a very

controversial question?”

Mr. Campsall said he feels certain now, more than ever before, that Jumbo Glacier Resort as proposed will never happen.

RDEK director and mayor of Radium Dee Conklin, who voted in support of Jumbo, said Premier Campbell’s resignation will not affect the outcome.

“I believe that it’s not a personal decision right now, it’s a process decision. In my mind, any bureaucrat should be capable of making this decision,” she said. “The word process is what’s so important here, that’s what it’s all about. A just process.

“Whether it’s Campbell or the NDP, it should have absolutely no bearing on this decision whatsoever,” Mayor Conklin added. “It should be signed off, simply. They [the proponent] have done everything that needs to be done and everything that has been asked of them. That’s my opinion and that’s where I’ve been standing all along.”

For now, Jumbo critics and supporters will just have to wait and see.

Visiting MLA praises local projects

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff MLA Lana Popham from the Saanich Peninsula, a critic for agriculture and sustainability, visited the valley on November 9th and applauded local projects like Edible Acres and Invermere’s Community Greenhouse.

“The area is doing fantastic,” she said. “As I tour

around other towns in the province, and see groups with similar visions, I think that this town is far, far ahead on the action needed to get there. It’s very progressive.

“I was absolutely blown away by the greenhouse project. Fantastic ... I often talk about the education system and how kids are disconnected from the food system now, and this greenhouse project — I wish I could see this in every school.”

Hotel may be put on hold for Vista Del Lago project

By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff The hotel and conference centre at the heart of Invermere’s proposed Vista Del Lago development may be years away, following a request from the developer to alter a zoning bylaw to allow more flexibility with the project.

Speaking at a council meeting on Tuesday, November 9th, Rory Hromadnik, the District of Invermere’s Director of Development Services, outlined the proposed changes put forward by Stoneset Equity Development Corporation.

Currently the multi-million dollar project is divided into 12 to 14 phases, to be completed in order, starting with the hotel and conference centre.

Stoneset have proposed an amendment that would remove the phasing, allowing the market to dictate the order in which parts of the project are built.

“A big stumbling block right now is the hotel and conference centre is millions of dollars and virtually every bit of infrastructure for the entire development has to be done upfront,” Mr. Hromadnik explained to Council.

“By allowing flexibility in which phase comes first, infrastructure can be built as they go along.”

Councillor Bob Campsell was quick to express concern over eliminating the in-order phasing of the project. While agreeing that the hotel does not seem feasible in the poor economic climate, he said he is worried that altering the bylaw would give developers free reign

to decide what is built when.

“It seems it might be prudent for us to know what will happen next,” Councillor Campsell added. “I agree the hotel does not seem to be feasible, but I’m not really comfortable with saying the developers can do anything they want with phasing.”

Councillor Ray Brydon agreed, saying that he would still like to see a phased approach to the development.

Councillor Al Miller and Mayor Gerry Taft both agreed that public consultation should be an important step in any bylaw amendment decision.

“We want to try and encourage and start economic growth in difficult and challenging times,” said Doug Haines, Stoneset’s Project Management Director.

The proposed Zoning Amendment Bylaw should provide more flexibility, allowing building work on Vista Del Lago to finally begin, he added.

The development company was forced to postphone the project in late 2008 due to the recession.

As the economic times have changed since Vista Del Lago was first proposed, the project needs to adapt to reflect that, Mr. Haynes added.

“Starting at phase two and jumping to phase eight is impossible,” he explained. “We are trying to build on some small positives to work towards the eventual goal of completing the whole project.”

Council chose to bring the application to a future committee of the whole meeting for further discussion.

Time to start stuffing a helping holiday hamper Submitted by Helen Wynder Christmas Bureau As thoughts turn to Christmas, we traditionally look forward to sharing wonderful family meals around heavily laden tables. Unfortunately, many families in the valley anticipate a season filled with anxiety rather than joy. For some, mill shutdowns, construction slowdowns and shop closures, coupled with perennial winter expenses like heating fuel and cold weather clothing, mean grocery budgets are very lean.

For the 15th season, the Christmas Bureau hopes, with your help, to brighten the Christmas celebration for needy families. The Christmas Bureau is a nonprofit society of community volunteers who distribute hampers to provide adequate food to struggling families, and modest gifts for children aged 0-12 and seniors +65. Teens 13-17 still in school receive gift vouchers for treats or activities. You can assist with this project by anonymously sponsoring a hamper or donating angel tree gifts.

You can organize your family, friends, work colleagues or club to assemble a small, medium or large food hamper, according to your means. If your sponsoring group is very generous, consider sponsoring several hampers, rather than assembling one that is excessively large.

Local shopkeepers partner with the Christmas Bureau to ensure that each child and senior in applicant families receives a Christmas gift. On November 17th, The Book Bar will set up an Angel Tree to collect gifts for children and seniors; from December 1st, as part of their corporate Angels Anonymous Program, the Dairy Queen will also decorate a tree to collect gifts for children.

The Angel Trees are arrayed with cards specifying the age, gender and gift request of a child or senior. To participate, record your name and telephone number on the bottom part of a card, and leave it in a box in the store. Firmly tape the top portion of the card onto the wrapped gift, and return it to the store by December 12th. Purchases should be kept to the $25 - $30 range, so that they are of equal value to gifts received by other family members.

Dry Gulch Ramblers featured in BC Musician Magazine Special to The Pioneer by Carla Stephenson BC Musician Magazine Lately I have noticed that at the heart of many fundraising events have been musicians, not only as performers but as organizers. I don’t know if it’s because we are typically broke and this leads to heightened creativity out of desperation, or because we are super generous.

The easiest way to contribute is with the donation of a performance for a cause. There have been many recent examples.

In Invermere, the Dry Gulch Ramblers donated their time for a benefit for a local with MS, Lynda Kirkpatrick. They helped to raise more than $25,000 for Lynda to undergo a life-altering medical procedure. But the donation of music gave so much more than money alone; it gave the opportunity to build community, for people to gather and celebrate.

There are hidden advantages for musicians when donating a gig. Performing at fundraisers exposes their music to a new audience; the local press usually cover a charity gig, giving the performers publicity; and at fundraisers, people are expecting to spend money so merchandise sales are usually high.

But musicians donate more than a performance.

I was first exposed to this in our venue in Ucluelet, Words End. We had a fairly well-established weekly open stage and we decided to make a compilation CD of local talent with the proceeds benefitting our salmon hatchery.

Our motive was two-fold: To give local artists ex-

posure and to give back to something that we cared about in our community.

Luckily we had all the ingredients to make a professional product; sound gear, great talent, and a store to sell CDs in. In the end we raised over $4,000.

Perhaps even more notable was that many musicians got their start from that CD. It gave them a product to show and any press that one artist could drum up benefited all of them.

In Nelson, the Grandmothers to Grandmothers group expressed their gratitude to local musicians for contributing their talent to a CD that can now be sold at all events for the organization for long-term fundraising for the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s efforts to combat HIV/AIDS in Africa. Grandmothers to Grandmothers wanted to help, and they learned quickly of the generosity within the local Kootenay musician community.

By giving their time and creativity, musicians are not only are contributing to the financial and social health of their communities, but are also often receiving much more than they bargained for in return.

Live or recorded, music is a gift that keeps on giving.

PAP Test and Manicure Night at OPT Options for Sexual Health (OPT) will be holding two PAP nights (October 18th and November 15th), to give women an opportunity to have their Cervix screened for abnormal cells that can lead to cervical cancer. Women should be tested every year for three years after they start having sexual relations. Once a woman has tested negative for three years in a row, screening every two years is all that is needed. Most women diagnosed with cervical cancer in BC in the year 1999 had not had a Pap test in the past three years. Evidence shows that women who have been screened regularly will have a very low risk of developing cervical cancer.

Effusion sells decorations for a charitable cause

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff Effusion Art Gallery has figured out how to combine charitable holiday giving with eye-catching artwork.

For the third year in a row, the Invermere gallery will be selling blown glass holiday ornaments painted by Effusion’s regular artists. One hundred percent of the proceeds generated from the beautiful handcrafted baubles will be donated to a local charity.

This year, the ladies of Effusion have decided to donate the money to the Invermere District Hospital Emergency department.

“It was difficult to choose just one charity, but we decided on the hospital because it’s something that is vital to everybody’s livelihood here,” Effusion’s art director Daryl DaCosta said.

In addition to the money raised from the sale of the ornaments, the gallery is also committing to donating a portion of sales from their annual Sparkle jewelry event to the same charity.

The Sparkle evening will kick start the holiday season and showcase the work of Canadian jewelry artists like Karyn Chopik, Melanie Rowe, and Invermere’s own Leslie Rowe-Israelson.

The event is also a chance to mingle and sip a refreshment while admiring the surrounding artwork, gallery owner Heather Cuell said.

“Last year we had a full house. It had great energy and everyone really seemed to be enjoying themselves.”

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff Mezzo-soprano opera singer Barbara King will be hitting the high notes at the Edgewater Community Hall this Sunday, November 14th, along with a collection of talented local artists in a performance entitled Germs of the Music Hall.

Barbara King will be accompanied by Grace King on the hall’s seven-foot Seiler grand piano, and will perform arias from “Samson and Delilah,” as well as hit tunes from the 1940s.

Wanda Seel and Barry Moore will take the stage after Ms. King with violin music in memory of cellist and valley doctor, Lorne Buerckert. The

duo will then perform a series of piano duets on the Seiler grand and the hall’s other grand piano, a new Selier 208 grand.

Invermere musician David Flowitt, who will perform from the Bitter Sweet days of Noel Coward’s tunes, praised the quality of acoustics in the hall.

“There are two places in Canada where you can hear every note being played: Massey Hall in Toronto and the Edgewater Hall.”

The Artym Gallery is pleased to present their latest group exhibition, Primal. This exhibition opens with an evening reception on Friday November 12th from 6 to 9 p.m. The show continues on Saturday November 13th from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

This exhibition is one of the Artym Gallery challenge shows. Previous challenges include creating two large and two small pieces for the same show and making a piece that was out of the ordinary in terms of style or technique.

For Primal the Artym Gallery painters, sculptors and jewelers were challenged to create a piece using black and white or sepia, with only one colour.

The idea for this show came from the oft-repeated comment in the Artym: “Wow, it is so colourful in here. Everything is just so bright!” While it is true that bold colour is very popular in contemporary Canadian art, this show tries to bring the art back to basics.

The term Primal is defined as of first importance, fundamental, or basic. Creating an exhibition around this theme, the Artym asked their artists to

dig down to their roots — to examine the simplest forms of black and white, dark and light, shadow and brightness and create a new work based on these fundamental concepts: in essence, creating works that are complex in their simplicity.

Seeing the different artists’ approaches to this challenge is fascinating. Some painters were very bold in their approach, using stark black and white with vivid pigments to create dramatic and striking works.

Others used a more subtle approach, blending the colours in with the black and white or sepia to create surprising tones and effects. This allowed the painters a broader range of artistic options within their limited colour scheme.

The participating jewelers used contrasting stones, particularly black and white diamonds, in unique settings to showcase the primal aspect.

By Steve Mantyka The Rockies had an exciting weekend, coming up short against Creston on Friday night, losing 4-2 and returning home to beat Fernie 5-4 in a thrilling game Saturday night. The Rockies were led

by Bruce Corrigal in net, stopping an astounding 63 shots, and Kory Movold collecting four points in a total team effort that had the crowd buzzing all night.

Stephen Hynes added three points and newcomer Tyler Reay scored in his first game for the Rockies. Reto Stiz also lit the lamp for the hometown team. Despite the one-sided shot total, the play was back-and-forth and kept the fans on the edge of their seats all night long.

Once again they failed. After spotting what should have been an insurmountable three goal lead for The Phantoms, the Hustlers did what they do best; they hustled until they had the victory.

There is no need for me to say more, the Hustlers are better than the Phantoms. Period.

Born December 19, 1921 in Stalwart, Saskatchewan to James and Gertrude Fitzpatrick. She passed away at the age of 88, November 2, 2010 at Columbia House, Invermere.

Margaret is survived by her husband, Norman, sons, Gary (Rosalie), Bryan, Marvin (Donna), and daughters, Jean (Ken), and Jane (Randy).

Grandchildren, Matthew (Sophie), Julia (Steve), Amanda, Janet (Ron), Jon (Kim), Jim (Sue), Ashley (Rick), Jerry (Wanda), Rena, Samantha (Curt), and Shannon. Great-grandchildren, Cory, Steven, Trisha, Jayden, Jagar, Amber, Carson, and Jazlyn. She is also survived by her sisters, Doris & Irene (Ian), and many nieces and nephews.

Service was held on Saturday, November 6th, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at The Valley Christian Assembly in Windermere.

Walking with the saints

By Pastor Fraser Coltman EK Lutheran Church The day after Halloween is known by many as All Saints’ Day. Christians have celebrated the festival of All Saints’ for more than a thousand years. It is a day on which we remember that none of us is alone in our life of following Jesus.

All people who call upon Jesus as their Savior from sin and death make up the church or the company of saints, a community of people from every nation, race, age, gender and culture.

Often the name is “saint” is reserved for a few people who are thought to have been particularly skilled in spirituality and morality, but that is not the way the name is used in the Bible. God declares men and women to be His saints or holy ones when they admit that they are actually unholy or sinful by nature, and rely on the life, death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus, as their hope of forgiveness and power for living.

The saints are simply those who rely on God and His grace to live their lives well and to die with hope of eternal life. Sainthood isn’t reserved for only a few of us; Jesus loves us all.

These days we tend to think of ourselves as individuals with our own hopes, dreams, interests, abilities, memories and feelings. When we think about God, we tend to want to approach Him individually.

Many of us are interested in spirituality and living our lives well, but we aren’t sure we want to get involved with others in a group like a church. We may prefer to search for God privately in our own way.

Learning to know God personally is important, but there is also a fairly high risk that when we make our spirituality something we define for ourselves, we will end up with something that is little more than the expression of our own wants and wishes.

God is much more than that. He is the Creator of the heavens and the earth. He became a human being named Jesus to invite us back into a close relationship with Himself. He calls to us gently but persistently, inviting us to find spiritual fulfillment by following Jesus and His teachings with others who have heard the call.

God invites us to find our place among His saints.

We all need mentors, people who know us and encourage us to trust God and care for the people in our lives. If you’ve begun to feel that need for companionship and encouragement in knowing God and following Jesus, but you haven’t yet found your way to a church, why not pay a visit this Sunday to one of the congregations in the area?

There you will find a gathering of God’s saints. We aren’t perfect people, but we know the only God who is patient enough to work with us.
