MS fund-raiser for Lynda Kirkpatrick surpasses goal

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff The generosity of valley residents once again proved itself at a fundraising dinner, dance, and silent auction for Multiple Sclerosis sufferer Lynda Kirkpatrick of Invermere.

The event was held to raise enough money to send

Lynda to Mexico for an expensive medical procedure not yet available in Canada.

Lynda’s friends, family, and community exceeded their fundraising goal of $25,000 and were able to collect an astounding $29,000 for the cause.

The Best Western Invermere Inn donated the venue, discounted food, and all proceeds from the bar on the evening of the event.

Invermere to drill test wells in Athalmer

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff Two test wells are slated to be drilled in Athalmer as part of the District of Invermere’s Aquifer Protection Plan, and to gather information on possible future water supply sources for the district.

Interior Health requirements prompted the District of Invermere to develop a formal Aquifer Protection Plan, which identifies potential contaminants to the aquifer system that runs underneath the Athalmer area, and provides guidelines to protect the water source which currently supplies two-thirds of Invermere’s need for water.

According to Golder Associates Ltd., who have collected information on all 18 wells in the Athalmer area, only six reach the deep, underlying aquifer,

which is where any additional water sources for the district would originate.

The locations and varying depths of these wells don’t provide a complete picture of the exact extent and location of the deep aquifer, so the consultants have recommended the drilling of two strategically placed test wells to determine the missing information. The test wells, which will cost up to $115,000 to complete, will provide information on the possibility of additional long-term water supplies for the area, said Dan Brown of Golder Associates.

Invermere council voted to approve the drilling at a September 14th meeting.

“It’s our water. It’s important,” Councillor Al Miller said. “We have a good protection plan in place . . . we’re moving in the right direction I think.”

In addition to contributing information to the

Aquifer Protection Plan, “there is an added benefit that one of these test wells could become a future water source,” Mayor Taft said.

“If we have growth through development or climate change, it gives us some certainty into the future as to where we could get our water from.”

The Invermere area’s current water supplies are split between Paddy Ryan Lake and a production well in Athalmer.

The production well, which now handles twothirds of Invermere’s water demands, was originally drilled as a test well, and turned out to be “substantial in both quality in volume,” Mayor Gerry Taft said.

The test wells will be drilled with a 6-inch diameter. If they prove fruitful, another 10-inch well would need to be drilled nearby to accommodate the production of a full water supply.

Invermere gives $20,000 more to CPR lodge

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff The District of Invermere has injected another round of funding into the town’s historic Canadian Pacific Railway lodge.

Invermere acquired the 1920s building, which once operated as a tourist camp beside the railway and was later a summer home for the Wier family, last spring when the future of the then privatelyowned lodge became uncertain.

The lodge was moved from its home on Fort Point to the Kinsmen Beach area, where it now rests.

The original budget for the entire lodge move was $120,000. The District of Invermere has al-

ready contributed $30,000, and have now agreed to an additional $20,000 to help cover building and maintenance costs.

During a regular council meeting last Tuesday, September 14th, Councillor Al Miller voiced his strong disapproval of the decision and voted against the motion.

“I’ve been totally against this right from the start, and I continue to be against it,” he said.

“We’ve got a long way to go to ever finish the building, and I ask this question: for what?

“I personally think we need to cap this project for now. The dollars that are going to be spent on this are not worth it.”

Councillor Ray Brydon agreed, but ultimately voted in favour of the monetary contribution,

citing a responsibility to finish the half-complete structure.

The project has been driven largely by a group of community volunteers who deserve recognition and should be supported by council, Councillor Spring Hawes added.

Mayor Gerry Taft, who is a long-time supporter of the project and has donated $1,000 of his own money towards it, explained to council that builders have incurred unforeseen costs, such as moving telephone lines.

“Right now money would allow building materials to be purchased and the building to be winterized, and really keep the momentum going,” Mayor Taft said. “This building is just one small part of a lot of different stories for our community.”

On September 10, at 7:10 a.m., members of the RCMP’s Columbia Valley Detachment received a report of someone yelling and screaming at Lake Enid.

It could have been a domestic argument. Police located a number of campers but no disturbance could be heard or seen.

On September 10, the Columbia Valley Detachment received a report of a theft of a camera near Tony’s Greek Grill. The camera was left unattended and is described as a Cannon G11 with a black case.

On September 10, at almost 10 p.m., police responded to a complaint of a domestic assault at the Best Western in Invermere. As a result of the investigation, a 41-year-old Kelowna man was charged with assault. The female victim did not require medical attention. Victim services helped the woman get home.

On September 10, at 11:30 p.m., Columbia Valley Detachment members were patrolling Edgewater when they came upon a highly-intoxicated female lying in the ditch. The female was unable to care for herself and was lodged in jail overnight to sober up.

She was charged with Drunk in a Public Place when released in the morning.

On September 11, at 10:45 p.m., Columbia Valley Detachment received a complaint in the 4000 block of Szabo Road in Spur Valley of a male trespassing on property. The owner said an older caucasion teen with sandy, brown hair cut in a bowl fashion confronted him, but left the area. Anyone with information is requested to call police at 250-342-9292.

Phone scam detected The RCMP’s Columbia Valley Detachment was informed that a popular phone scam for money was attempted in our area. In this instance, a caller used a proper name of a relative and stated he was in trouble with the law in Toronto and he needed help.

In most cases the caller will pick on an elderly per-

son and state, “Hi Grandma, can you guess who this is?”

The grandparent, in most cases, will name the person and the caller at the other end now has a name and will state, indeed, that’s who it is. The caller will then state his particular problem and ask that money be wired to them.

In this instance, however, the caller had a correct name. The person who received this call, however, asked a number of questions which the caller was unable to answer correctly. So, he hung up to carry on and try to locate another victim.

Good work on this end at protecting themselves and not falling for this. Unfortunately, in many instances the scam works as grandparents want to help their grandchildren and in some cases want to protect them. Know that this is a popular scam and don’t be afraid to ask hard questions that only true relative would know.

Theft of two points We don’t know all the kids’ names yet, but our Columbia Valley Rockies goal tender robbed Golden of two points in Golden on Friday. I was goal judging at the time in Golden and twice my finger was ready to push the red button but our goal tender made some remarkable saves. Team played well to deserve the win and after this weekend they are off to a 2-0 start.

Qualifications I mentioned awhile back that the police are subject to numerous medicals for fitness. Every year we have to qualify on our guns as well. A couple of weeks ago, I finally earned enough points that they let me put bullets in the gun. Lucky year, I guess. My eyes are not like they use to be, so I was given the green light with restrictions. The restriction is OE (old eyes).

Restriction #1 — 5-10 yards: good to go, no problems, can drop the bad guy with one shot.

Culvert upgrades in park going swimmingly

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff Fish in Kootenay National Park are being given a fair chance to swim underneath the highway after 68 culvert crossings in the park were deemed unsuitable for fish to move through and spawn upstream.

Kootenay National Park is home to a variety of fish, including bull trout, whitefish, sculpin, Kokanee salmon, brook trout, and cutthroat trout, all of which find refuge in slower-moving streams for spawning and rearing their young.

“The park is a regionally important resource for spawning fish,” specialist Shelley Humphries said.

Most of the streams in the park cross under the highway at some point by way of culverts. Older culverts tend to have designs that make it difficult or impossible for fish to navigate their waters, essentially splitting the fish habitat on either side of the highway.

In 2006, Ms. Humphries helped organize and conduct an assessment of around 600 culverts in six of the national parks. Eighty culverts were surveyed in Kootenay Park and only 12 were identified as suitable for all-species, all-season fish movement.

Five culvert crossings in Kootenay Park have

since been restored, and one was completely replaced. Each restoration can cost between $6,000 and $100,000, and a full replacement can cost as much as $1 million, Ms. Humphries said.

One of the most elaborate restorations in the park to date is the culvert crossing at Dolly Varden Creek. Culverts that once gushed an impassable waterfall were refurbished by raising the water level using rocks to form a series of three, slow-moving wiers, which provide the perfect place for fish to travel upstream.

Ms. Humphries hopes the renovation will encourage fish like bull trout to move upstream beyond the culvert, which she doesn’t believe has happened in the past.

“From an ecology perspective, giving the fish the option to use as much of their ecological habitat as possible is the most ideal,” she said.

Further down the highway from Dolly Varden, another culvert revamp was recently completed at Nixon Creek, where a gradual ramp of rocks help create small, slow-moving pools for fish to navigate.

Ms. Humphries and her colleagues hope this year’s salmon run will utilize the refurbished culverts and demonstrate the effect the stream crossings will have on the overall health of fish ecology in the park.

Premier Campbell agrees to restore democracy

By Brian Geis Pioneer Staff After dictating for more than a year that he knows better what’s good for the B.C. economy than the collective wisdom of B.C. voters, Liberal Premier Gordon Campbell agreed ­— under intense pressure threatening to shatter his party — to let voters decide for themselves.

Sailing along on the crest of a wave of an unprecedented third term in office, Premier Campbell shocked and outraged even his most loyal supporters by smashing a bottle of Dom Perignon against the hull of a Titanic tax grab — as a first order of business after an election without a word of discussion or consultation — singlehandedly disproving Grace Hopper’s home-spun wisdom that it is easier to ask forgiveness than it is to get permission.

Voters responded with an historical first of their own, successfully petitioning government to hold a referendum on the extremely unpopular Harmonized Sales Tax which shifts the burden from business to consumer.

Despite initial arrogance followed by stubborn reluctance, Premier Campbell has agreed to let a 2011 referendum be the final arbiter on his Harmonized Sales Tax. Invermere Mayor Gerry Taft, who organized local opposition to the tax, said he finds little to celebrate.

“This is not a victory. It’s a giant waste of time and money,” he said. “Even with a referendum, we will only get to choose between two options, neither of which may be the best tax model for B.C.” If the lack of consultation was the thrust of the problem, then Premier Campbell should begin now by opening a dialog about tax reform in B.C.

Reader apologizes for hitting dog Dear Editor: This letter is for the family or person whose beautiful dog died Monday night as a result of running out in front of my car as I was driving north on Highway 93/95 just past Juniper Heights.

I cannot express how sorry I feel and how much it deeply saddens me. The dog was not wearing a tag, therefore I didn’t know who to contact.

I stopped hoping there was something I could do to help or, perhaps, take it to the veterinarian, but I am quite sure the dog died instantly.

Please know that it was an accident and if there was anything I could have done to prevent it, I would have done so.

I am writing to tell you how very sorry I am and to let you know that my heart weighs heavy for your loss.

It is something I would appreciate knowing if it had been my dog that didn’t make it home one night.

Area families paying price for Harper’s bad decisions Dear Editor: When Finance Minister Jim Flaherty and Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced benefit cuts to the Employment Insurance Program and then followed it with an announcement of EI premium increases to both employees and employers, they showed, once again, their complete disdain for the unemployed, for working families and for small business owners in this country.

There are still millions of Canadians, either unemployed or underemployed, who rely on EI. This cut to the EI program, in the midst of a shaky economic recovery, is just another in a string of bad decisions made by Stephen Harper.

The EI premium increases are expected to be the maximum allowed under the Act. This is an increased cost for workers and employers and comes at a time when they themselves are struggling to recover from the recession. It shows that Stephen Harper is determined to slay the deficit on the backs of workers and their families.

At the same time as Stephen Harper is taking more money out of your pocket through EI premiums, he is talking about spending $400 million to build an arena in Quebec City and $30 million more on a less accurate census. He has foisted the HST onto British Columbians and has wasted billions on the G8 and G20 meetings in Toronto. Spending $400 million for a hockey rink in Quebec City, when private investors are backing away, is being seen as nothing more than an attempt to improve Harpers polling numbers in Quebec.

Just think, how many arenas, roads, hospitals, affordable housing projects, retraining programs for displaced workers or Seniors and Veterans programs could have been funded if Harper hadn’t wasted billions on fake lakes and photo-ops at the G8 and G20 meetings?

It’s been a long summer of Stephen Harper’s bad decisions, and it’s our families who are paying the price.

The bears are back in town

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff With the arrival of autumn temperatures and ripening fruit trees, bears have wandered back into town and are on the hunt for available snacks.

At a regular council meeting on September 8th, Radium Hot Springs’ Bylaw Enforcement Officer Gary Burford reported that he’d been busy attending calls about bear sightings within town boundaries.

Mr. Burford said he believes the two bears who visited town last year during the nighttime, are now sleeping in town and acting bolder than before.

Radium’s Animal Safety Bylaw prohibits feeding any wildlife or unintentionally leaving out attractants such as bird feeders, garbage, or unpicked fruit in trees. Anyone found in violation of the bylaw can be fined $200.

Despite door-to-door enforcement, the bears are still finding available food, Mr. Burford said.

“I believe we’re doing better each year with garbage, but as soon as they get a taste, it’s enough.”

An additional element to the bear problem is the later-than-usual ripening of fruit trees, Mr. Burford added. Because the fruit isn’t yet ripe, it isn’t being picked, so it’s available for the mouths of hungry bears to take.

“The bears are back about a month early, and the fruit trees are about a month late . . . we are being proactive, but the bears are a little ahead of us,” he said.

In Invermere, which doesn’t have a formal bylaw to prohibit the feeding of wildlife, several bear sightings have been reported, including a mother and two cubs sitting atop a chicken coop.

Despite the sightings, there have been no real complaints or conflict, Chief Administrative Officer Chris Prosser said.

Invermere recently awarded a contract to begin a Bear Smart program, which will assess how the town can improve from a bear smart point of view.

Wilmer Community Club urges residents to attend public meeting Submitted by Sue Hoyne Wilmer Community Club On Tuesday, September 21, at 7 p.m. the Wilmer Community Club and two directors from the Regional District of East Kootenay will hold a public information meeting at the Wilmer Hall to discuss a plan for a “Petition for Services”.

If a majority of Wilmer residents agree to sign this petition, it will provide a means for the Wilmer Community Club to cover insurance, hydro and other maintenance costs of the Wilmer Community Hall and Conrad Kain Park and rink. Last year, we received a grant from Columbia Basin Trust, which —

together with many helping hands — allowed us to finish landscaping the park. Thanks to another grant from the Columbia Basin Trust, we are poised to reroof the hall this fall.

The park has seen an increase in summer use, with further volunteer work on the rink needed to get it in shape for the winter.

The Wilmer Community Club is a volunteer, non-profit society. Our purpose is to promote, foster and develop community spirit and good citizenship through the use of the park and hall facilities. We are asking all landowners in Wilmer to plan on attending this important meeting, which will be followed by the Wilmer Community Club’s Annual General Meeting.

Correction: RCMP were second to arrive at scene of accident In the September 3rd edition of The Pioneer, in a story titled, “Man killed in car crash near Fairmont,” it was mistakenly reported that STARS paramedics were on the scene when police arrived. RCMP Corporal Grant Simpson said, in fact, the police arrived just minutes after BC Ambulance Service paramedics, helped them stabilize the driver, called in the STARS med-evac helicopter and established the landing zone. The driver was still alive when STARS arrived on the scene, he said.

For years valley musicians have been donating their melodious voices and instruments to a weekly concert for the residents of Invermere’s Columbia House, and they’re now in need of proper sound equipment.

Local musical talents Mike Smith and Marty Beingessner both perform on Tuesday afternoons when guitar thrums resonate from Columbia House as residents join together to sing and tap their feet.

For as long as they can remember, each musician who performs brings his or her own sound equipment with them, which is usually a cumbersome affair, the pair said.

As a group, the volunteer performers would like to raise $1,000 to fund the purchase of a new P.A. system and

two microphones with stands.

“It’s not uncommon to have audiences of 60, 70, or 80 people,” Mr. Smith said, explaining that with a group that size, it’s difficult for everyone to properly hear the concert.

In addition to helping the musical performances, a new system would benefit other volunteers who read, call bingo, and give presentations at the long-term care facility.

“It’s kind of a multi-purpose idea.

I’d sure like to see it. It would help a lot,” Mr. Beingessner said.

A collection of around 10 talented musicians will join together for the cause next Wednesday, September 22nd at 7 p.m. at Angus McToogles restaurant in Invermere.

“All the musicians are coming out and donating their time, so we’re asking people to reach into their pockets and give a little back,” Mr. Smith said.

Local musicians returning home to play with award-winning quartet

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff Two successful musicians with local beginnings are returning to play at Pynelogs Cultural Centre in concert with the award-winning Amanda Tosoff jazz quartet.

Sean Cronin and Morgan Childs, who grew up playing music together in Invermere, have carved an impressive path in the music scenes of Vancouver and Toronto.

Sean learned the musical ropes from his father, John Cronin, before moving to Vancouver and striking out on his own.

Sean’s instrument of choice is the acoustic or electric bass, but he is also well versed in vocals, guitar, piano, the banjolele, saxophone, and drums.

He’s played with up to 15 bands at a time, including the CBC radio-featured bluegrass band Redgrass, the progressive Bocephus King, and Sean’s own band, Very Good, who won this year’s Galaxy Rising Star

award at the Vancouver Jazz Festival for what Sean describes as “avant chamber rock” music.

Similarly, Morgan was encouraged by his musician father, Bruce Childs, and now heads his own band, The Morgan Childs Quintet, as drummer. The quintet released their debut jazz CD Time in 2008. Morgan also collaborates regularly with New York saxophonist Ian Hendrickson-Smith.

Now, the duo are returning to the valley with Amanda Tosoff — Sean on bass, Morgan on drums, Amanda on piano, and Chris Gale on sax — to perform original songs from the quartet’s latest CD release Looking North.

The foursome won the prestigious Grand Prix du Jazz award last year at the Montreal International Jazz festival, and was invited to return again this summer.

“It’s really interesting music,” Sean said. “Amanda seems to have grown a lot as a composer. She’s been in a really serious study of the music of Duke Ellington, but filtered through her own musical style.”

York trumpet player, Ingrid Jensen, who “has always been one of our mentors and idols,” Sean said.

Both Sean and Morgan are looking forward to showcasing their work in the town where their musical careers began.

“It’s nice to play the music that I’m always working on in other places in my hometown,” Morgan said.

“Hopefully it means something to the people that are listening to it that have heard me play since I was 14 years old.”

“I really like playing in the valley,” Sean agreed.

“Generally people in town seem to always be paying a lot of attention and are really plugged-in.”

The quartet will play on the evening of Tuesday, September 28th at Pynelogs.

The time has come for a landmark tree in Invermere’s downtown core.

Anyone can visit www.invermere. net to cast their vote from a list of options, which include planting another tree, adding a piece of public artwork, or leaving a blank area.

“It’s such a landmark in Invermere, but it’s at the point where something needs to happen,” Mayor Gerry Taft said, acknowledging people’s sentiment towards the tree and the overall cenotaph area.

Picnic planned to celebrate accessibility A.C.E. (Access in the Community for Equality) ­— a society promoting barrier-free access for all in the community regardless of ability level — is gathering for a picnic and everyone is invited.

Celebrating the installation of musical playground equipement, the organization said it would like to share its celebration with the community on Sunday, September 19th, at Kinsmen Beach, from 3–5 p.m.

In 2010, the District of Invermere, the regional district, 2010 Legacies Now, other community groups and individual bequests, helped ACE improve the accessible experience at Kinsmen Beach in several ways.

Firstly, musical playground equipment called Soundplay was installed over the summer at the Kins-

men Beach playground. The Soundplay instruments are sturdy, colourful and inviting. Anyone can play them regardless of their abilities and they add a unique twist to the playground experience. Four pieces were chosen including the kalimba, painted alligator drum, tongue drums and rainwheel.

Secondly, a colourful interpretive sign has been designed to describe the turtles living in Dorothy Lake. Many features of the sign have been specially designed so that any individual can enjoy it — even those with visual impairments.

Organizers say there will be cake and cookies provided. Bring a picnic lunch. Please come out and share in the celebration.

Workshop aims to empower women

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff Women looking to reenergize their minds, bodies and souls will be participating in a one-day workshop this weekend to raise money for the Family Resource Centre.

One hundred percent of the workshop’s proceeds will go to the local not-for-profit organization, which helps support valley families.

“It’s a great cause, but also a great benefit personally,” organizer Jackie Lysak said. “It really doesn’t matter whether you run a business or you are homemaker,

or you are retired. We all generally as people improve, and that’s what we’re here to do.”

The workshop will feature notable guest speaker Mandie Crawford, who trained under Jack Canfield, the man responsible for the Chicken Soup for the Soul book series.

Four local women will also be on hand to speak to the healthy bodies aspect of the event.

“It’s meant to be educational,” Ms. Lysak said.

The event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 18th at the Best Western Invermere Inn. Dress is business attire.

Property tax controversy settled

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff A recent announcement that the Radium Hot Springs’ council was considering a bylaw to exempt the town’s Roman Catholic Church property from taxation caused controversy among some Radium residents, prompting a petition of protest.

Following the appearance of a routine newspaper announcement about the bylaw, a group of citizens opposing the proposed tax exemption wrote a letter to council seeking more information about the reasoning behind such a decision.

“We do not think the bylaw to exempt the Roman Catholic Church property from taxation in the year 2011 is right,” the letter to council reads.

“In saying that, many of us do not know the financial workings of the Church and feel all property tax payers have a right to understand why the Church is asking for property tax exemption.”

Council discussed the letter of opposition during their September 8th regular meeting and ultimately agreed to adopt the bylaw and exempt the church property from $1,154 in taxes.

Under provincial law, all churches and the land beneath them are mandatorily exempt from prop-

erty taxes, Chief Administrative Officer Mark Read explained to council. Individual municipalities then have the option to exercise a permissive tax exemption on land owned by churches and other not-forprofit organizations — in this case, three additional lots of land.

In the past, Radium has exempted the Roman Catholic Church property from taxes based on “a long-standing relationship with the church,” Mr. Read said.

In a letter of response to the unsettled residents, Mr. Read explained the town’s reciprocal relationship with the church.

“Initially, the Parish donated use of the land that we use for parking behind the Visitor Information Centre. More recently, the Parish donated land for us to construct a nondenominational columbarium.

These donations of land have enabled us to provide key services to our residents and saved us hundreds of thousands of dollars in land acquisition costs.”

Granting the exemption is a way to say “thank you very much for doing so much for the community,” Mayor Dee Conklin said.

Councillor Ron Verboom added, “The amount of money being exempt is far less than the amount being donated back.”

Regional District of East Kootenay PUBLIC INFORMATION MEETING ‐ WILMER A public information meeting is being held to discuss establishing a service to provide an annual contribution to the Wilmer Community Club for maintenance and operation of the Wilmer Community Hall, Conrad Kain Park and playground. Green Zone: wager ruined our games

By Harold Hazelaar Pioneer Columnist Last week, I was road-trippin’ on my annual golf get-away with a few friends. (not allowed to mention any names!)

We played Bootleg Gap, Kimberley Golf Club and St. Eugene’s.

All three courses were in excellent condition but did not treat any of us very kindly. It seems that when we put ourselves into a mildly competitive situation, we all self-destruct. This doesn’t bode well for any of our Champion Tour fantasies. If we are shaking over a two-foot putt with only 50 cents on the line, how are we ever going to develop the nerves to consistently roll in those 6-8-footers for big coin?

We are not! That will never happen and sadly we all realized that this past weekend. A little competition ruined our games and easily boosted our handicaps by a point.

To make matters worse, I decided that Donna was going to buy me a new putter for Christmas, and had one put away for me at Golf Etc. in Cranbrook.

Then we headed to the golf course for our tee time. Obviously, I had convinced myself that my putting woes were the fault of my suddenly defective putter and guess what – my putter is suddenly defective! None of my usual

automatic putts fell into the cup. Nothing came close. I three-putted 13 of 18 holes, my short game is a mess! But all will be well on Christmas day when I get my new putter!

And so goes the mental aspect of golf.

The simple past-time that pits us solely against ourselves, quite easily becomes the most difficult of games because we believe it to be. We make it hard; we make the game a four to five hour torture test. We drive ourselves to fits of anger and cause ourselves to dole out piles of money for remedies that a simple slap to the side of the head would probably fix.

But where’s the fun in that? We also love to make a zillion excuses about why our game is in shambles. Some of those excuses that I hear make me laugh so hard inside, I think it keeps me healthy (you know, laughter is the best medicine). All in all, we had fun, it didn’t rain on us and we have some funny tales to tell. Anyway, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

WE NEED HELP FOR RICHIE Richie Kohorst was diagnosed with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis April 2008. In these two short years Richie has seen dramatic decline in the use of his right side. After much research, Suzie and Richie have been contacted by The Hubbard Foundation for the CCSVI Liberation Operation in San Diego, CA. who have booked him for late October. The expenses for this surgery will be approximately $15,000.

After graduating from DTSS and playing with the Rockies Hockey Club, Richie moved to Kamloops to pursue post-secondary education. Through his passion for hockey he fulfilled his dream and started a Goalie School but with MS progressively weakening him he is struggling to travel and put on Goalie Clinics, but more so he no longer is able to participate in his two children’s sports. Since starting his Goalie School Richie has come to the valley in August to assist with the Rockies’s Training camp, as well as play in an annual golf game with the many friends he grew up here with. Unfortunately he cannot golf nor skate at this time. He is finding it a daily struggle to have energy for just day to day activities including working full-time which has put a financial strain on their family.

It is Richie’s and Suzie’s hope, as well as his family and friends here in the Windermere Valley that Richie will be able to have this operation. As such we are reaching out to the community to assist with financial aid.

Richie and Suzie’s friends in Kamloops have set up a “Fund Raiser For Richie” evening Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010 at the Barnhartvale Community Centre.

Model A has long line of valley history

FREE WHEELING ­— Ray Picton with his classic car, a 1928 Model A Ford in original condition. The car is original to the valley, and was originally purchased by Athalmer oil dealer, John Wolfe. Mr. Picton will enter his vehicle in this year’s Show and Shine, where he and his wife, Anne Picton, will don 1920s costumes to match the character of the car.

Hundreds of cars from North America enter the Show and Shine classic car show each year, but some of the most interesting entries are from local auto enthusiasts like Windermere’s Ray Picton.

Mr. Picton owns a car that’s had a local presence longer than most valley residents.

The 1928 Ford Model A two-door sport coup was originally purchased by John Wolfe, a bulk oil dealer in Athalmer.

“I believe he bought it new,” Mr. Picton said.

The car changed hands to Helen Annis, a sheep farmer on the Toby Benches, who later sold it to Scotty Falker.

David Broadfoot purchased the car from Mr. Falker, and later sold it to Reid Madson. The Model A was then

owned by local mechanic Frank Blakley, before Mr. Picton took over ownership of the car in 1999.

“I can’t take any credit at all for it’s appearance,” Mr. Picton said. “Everyone did a little to it as it passed them by.

I do the bare minimum. I just play with it and enjoy it.”

Mr. Picton credits most of the car’s gleaming appearance to Mr. Blakley, who he refers to as a “magician mechanic.”

“If you gave him an engine in pieces in a big box without telling him what engine it was, he’d put it together. He’s an amazing mechanic,” Mr. Picton and his wife, Anne, moved to the valley in 1967. They joined the Columbia Valley Classic Car Club and have entered their Ford in the club’s annual Show and Shine every year since 2000.

“This one attracts a lot of attention,” Mr. Picton said.

One of the quirks of the car’s age is an absence of signal lights. Instead, the driver must roll down the window and hand-signal with his arm.

“When you signal to turn right, we always get a lot of waves because people think we’re gesturing ‘hello,’” Mr. Picton added with a laugh.

The car has a small brake light on the back that glows ‘STOP’ when the brakes are touched, and a rumble seat in the back with a zip-up window flap.

“That’s what you’d call the motherin-law seat,” Mr. Picton said, laughing. “If you don’t want to talk to your mother-in-law, you just ‘zzziiip’ and she’s gone.”

Another unique feature is the gravity-fed gas tank, which sits at the

front of the car and causes some confusion among gas attendants, Mrs. Picton said. “You should see those young gas attendants trying to figure out where to put the gas.”

A whirling speedometer measures the car’s speed in miles, and a small, single windshield wiper swishes in front of the driver.

Mr. Picton is currently on the hunt for the car’s original heater: a covered metal container to fill with hot ashes that was put at the feet of the passenger.

The vehicle also generates quite a few tales from people who remember riding in one, said Mrs. Picton.

“You can’t imagine all the stories we get from little old ladies who remember going courting in those cars.”

The Picton’s character-filled classic will be on display at this year’s car show in Radium on Saturday, September 18th.

If you’re uncertain if you’ve found the correct car, look for a couple in 1920’s attire — Mr. Picton dresses up in a waistcoat and bowler hat, while Mrs. Picton gets gussied up in a dress and 1920s-style hat.

Panorama signs five-year deal with local network provider Nanofibre

By Pioneer Staff Rick Jensen, CEO of Panorama, and Mark Halwa, President of NanoFibre Networks, signed a five year contract for NanoFibre to deliver telecommunication services to Panorama.

“As a local business, we have made a significant investment in a local ski resort and we’re pleased to give our telecom business to another local company who has also made a significant investment in this valley,” Mr. Jensen commented.

Mr. Halwa said Panorama will be the first customer to receive Nanofibre’s one-gigabyte-per-second corporate service.

“This is good news for all taxpayers from Panorama to Spillimacheen to Spirit’s Reach”, Mr. Halwa commented. “A portion of every dollar we charge our customers is returned to the Regional District of East Kootenay to pay for the fibre-optic backbone installed in 2007. Providing services to Panorama means the taxpayer debt will be repaid faster, and that benefits everyone who owns property in the area.

He loved his garden and during his 25 years of retirement he used the time doing great woodwork. He is survived by his wife, Betty, of 63 years and three children, Lynda (Orest), Darlene (Cliff), and Don (Joyce), and eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren, one sister, and a lot of extended family. Russell Archibald Coutts

William P. Kirker

Russell was born in Marengo, Saskatchewan on July 27, 1921. He was a World War II veteran and received many medals for his service.

He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #24 in Cranbrook, British Columbia for 27 years.

For the last 41 years, Russell resided in Canal Flats with his wife Jean who predeceased him in 2008. He worked for Crestbrook Sawmill as a millwright. He was known as the town’s fix it man and while you were having your lawn mower fixed he would regale you with stories of his past. He was also known as the candy man. When you visited his home he had what was called a people feeder and it was full of candy.

Russell was a member of the Town Municipal Works for years and a member of the Lions Club for many more. He enjoyed being Santa for many years for the annual Christmas party put on by the Lions Club.

The Christmas party gave him a chance to grow his beard and enjoy the children of the community.

Russell will be lovingly remembered by his brother Harry of Cranbrook, British Columbia; his brother Norman of Milk River, Alberta and his sister Margaret of Calgary, Alberta; sons Gordon (Mynra) of Calgary, Alberta, Chuck (Mona) of Strathmore, Alberta, his grandchildren Tonya Marie Coutts, Charles Russell Coutts, Denise Marie Coutts, and Steven Russell Coutts, as well as his nieces, nephews, neighbours and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents Benjamin and Susan Coutts, his brother Gordon and one son Michael.

A funeral service for Russell took place on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 11:00 am at the Canal Flats Community Centre. His Interment was in Canal Flats Cemetery.

September 18, 1929 – September 7, 2010 William P. Kirker (Bill), born September 18, 1929 in Trail, B.C., died in Invermere, B.C. on September 7, 2010 with his wife Beverley by his side.

Raised in Trail, B.C where his parents, James and Catherine, settled after emigrating from Ireland in 1927, Bill was an avid downhill skier and he loved to play golf. He graduated with a degree in geology from the University of British Columbia in 1951 and enjoyed a long and distinguished career, making a significant contribution to Calgary’s oil patch, and many friends along the way.

Bill and Bev enjoyed fifty-eight great years together and raised three children, Scott (Anne), Craig (Colleen), and Karen (Brian), who all shared their father’s sense of humour and conviviality, more often than not with a fine bottle of Scotch. Bill delighted in spending time with his nine grandchildren, Katie and Ryan; Evan, Bryce, Travis, Miranda, and Kyla; Derek and Brett, all of whom dearly loved and respected him. He was very close to his brothers, Jim (Margaret) and Mervyn (Corinne).

One of his many gifts was his easy manner and the great joy he felt when spending time with his friends and family.

All who knew him will remember him fondly.

Windermere welcomes autumn

FALL FAIR FUN — Hundreds of people flocked to Windermere’s annual Fall Scarecrow Festival last weekend to enjoy a variety of entertainment and seasonal activities. A short bout of rain at the beginning of the fair did not deter attendants, who were rewarded with a warm, sunny afternoon. The fair bustled with fruit and vegetable vendors, live performances, and the smell of freshly popped popcorn. Pastor Jones on wrong path

By Pastor Rev. Fraser Coltman, St. Peter’s Lutheran Mission For many reasons, I breathed a sigh of relief when I heard that Pastor Terry Jones had called off his globally infamous Qur’an burning. The violent act he threatened had already triggered violent protest in Afghanistan, increasing the likelihood of growing sympathy for Taliban fighters and hindering the efforts of NATO forces there. Pastor Jones’ plan also endangered his life and the lives of his family and flock by leading others to make death threats against them. In a television interview prior to September 11, Jones acknowledged those threats and affirmed that he would attend the book burning armed with a gun. I don’t know why he changed his mind, but I’m glad he did; our world is troubled enough without another person causing it more trouble in the name of God. I am a Christian pastor too. It is a great responsibility and privilege to speak to people in God’s name.

I believe that God has revealed Himself clearly in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, but I also know that we who read them often muddy the waters of that revelation by forcing them to flow within the narrow confines of some of our own self-inspired convictions.

Pastor Jones appears to have been frustrated with his nation’s seeming inability to defeat the radical Muslim terrorists since 2001. He thought that some sign of strong, violent force was in order. Unfortunately, he somehow came to believe that God was guiding him in this conviction. When asked if he thought that burning the Qur’an was what he thought Jesus would do, he said “yes.”

That answer had nothing to do with God’s revelation in the New Testament. Jesus had some hot-head disciples of his own. On one occasion, two of them asked him if they could call down fire from heaven to destroy a town of people who had refused to show Jesus’ followers hospitality. His answer was a clear “No!” Jesus’ teaching stood out from popular religious notions of his day because he called for his people to love their enemies and to forgive those who sinned against them. His crucifixion for us embodied that teaching.

Paul, a great Christian missionary, echoed Jesus by writing, “Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God…do not be overcome with evil, but overcome evil with good.”

There have been times when I have believed that I was right in taking some action only to realize that my motives were not as pure as I thought. The beauty of our Lord Jesus is that He provides us with a simple way out of those jams. “I am sorry…I have sinned…I was wrong;” words like these turn us from the wrong paths we choose back to the One who forgives us for our sins and helps us to practice prayer, patience, forgiveness and faith in a world troubled by human injustice. I hope that this was the real explanation behind Pastor Jones’ decision not to burn Qur’ans.
