The judges have spoken

After much deliberation, three winning photographs have been selected from 30 entries in this year’s Love Your Lake Photo Contest.

The contest, sponsored by Wildsight, invited photographers to celebrate Lake Windermere by submitting an image that captured what lake stewardship meant to them.

Three local photography legends, Pat Morrow, Ryan Bavin, and Brad Hill, sorted through the sub-

mitted photos and chose the three winning images.

“It was hard for the judges to choose, based both on the quality of the photos and how they represent stewardship,” said Heather Leschied, program manager for Wildsight.

“They’re all beautiful photos.”

First place went to John Pitcher (see above), second to Jason Portras for a wintery image of the lake, and third to Allegra Newill for her photograph of a windsurfer.

All of the images are on display at Wildsight’s office in Invermere for those interested in having a look.

Governments partner to enhance trails

By Brian Geis Pioneer Staff If the regional district board approves, a rare partnership of local, regional, provincial and federal governments will partner with Columbia River Greenways Alliance to enhance trails in Invermere.

“One of the most exciting aspects of the trail program,” Invermere Mayor Gerry Taft said, “is linking the sidewalk on 13th Avenue in front of Westside Park with a trail along 13th Avenue all the way to the entrance of CastleRock Estates.

“Not only is this very important because of the narrow width of 13th Avenue in this area and the high number of pedestrians and bikers, but it is also an important first step to the greater vision of a Greenways trail along the west side of Lake Windermere.”

According to Mayor Taft, the District of Invermere was successful in two key grant initiatives that have created an opportunity to improve and expand pathways planned under the Active Transportation

Network Plan developed for the community.

• The first grant is a Provincial Initiative for $198,966 entitled Local Motion that provides 50 percent of the cost of trail and pathway improvements completed and currently underway.

• The second granting initiative is a federal stimulus initiative targeting recreational infrastructure works. There are two federal grants the district was awarded for pathways, a new ball park, sports court and outdoor fitness equipment included. The federal grants combined for a total of $293,866 and can be used to support 34 percent of the total project cost.

The good news, he said, is the financial support within the initiatives overlaps and has created a situation where a significant amount of recreational improvements — which would have otherwise been completed over a much longer timeline — can be completed now.

The trail work commenced in the summer of 2009 and is scheduled for completion this year. The program will consist of the new construction of 5.8

kilometres of two-metre-wide multi-use paths and improved safety measures on an additional two kilometres. The selection of trails to be completed, he said, involves a focus on pedestrian and bicycle safety, completion of fitness circuits of various distances and future access and community connection plans. A few of the key trail locations are: • Establishing a connection from 13th Avenue (Westside road) through to the Castle Rock junction, currently a busy and dangerous pedestrian and biking area.

• Sidewalks on 10th Street and 6th Avenue to provide improved access for the senior’s manor, hospital and school access.

• Pathway from J.A. Laird along 13th Avenue and the Industrial park escarpment to provide a nice extended circuit and a safer school connection from the north end of town.

• Numerous smaller sections and improvements near the schools, museum, Kinsmen Beach and downtown approach.

Stoneset making progress on downtown development

By Brian Geis Pioneer Staff Stoneset Equity Development Corporation (CNSX:SQC) recently announced that survey work is underway at Vista Del Lago.

Now in its fifth year since receiving approval from Invermere Council, the sprawling downtown development promises to forever alter the Invermere skyline and requires reconfiguration of streets

and infrastructure along Invermere’s waterfront.

According to a company press release, the survey work is being completed prior to municipal infrastructure, site servicing and overall site grades.

“Along with the already-approved development permits, the survey work and associated infrastructure, will add more value to the project and, in turn, more value to Stoneset and its investors,” Doug Haines, Stoneset’s Senior Project Manager, explained.

Stoneset said, once complete, Vista Del Lago will complete the District of Invermere, serving as the ultimate anchor to 13th Street; stimulating pedestrian foot traffic to businesses and services along the downtown corridor.

The last long weekend of the busy summer resulted in 53 files from Friday to Monday, many of them alcohol related. Three files resulted in visits to the drunk tank. Nine 24-hour suspensions were handed out over the weekend during routine checks and with a single vehicle check resulting in six of the suspensions.

• On September 3rd, at almost 2 a.m., as a result of a trespassing complaint in the 700 block of 15th Street in Invermere, police found an 18-year-old man hiding on the property. The man was arrested for being drunk in a public place and trespassing at night.

There was a concern that he was looking into the residence.

• On September 3rd, members of the RCMP’s Columbia Valley Detachment were called regarding an assault that had taken place on August 25 at a private residence. Police were advised that two men got into a verbal and physical confrontation. As a result, one man grabbed a shovel and struck the other in the leg resulting in a broken bone. The investigation is continuing.

• On September 3rd, the Columbia Valley Detachment responded to a hit-and-run complaint in the rear parking lot of Kootenay Savings in Radium. A red Cruiser was struck by an unknown vehicle causing damage to the tail lights of the Cruiser.

• On September 4, at 9 a.m., police dealt with a minor collision involving a 2005 Nissan with Alberta plates and a deer near Fairmont Hot Springs on Highway 93/95. The driver was uninjured. However, the vehicle sustained approximately $4000 in damage.

• On September 5th, in the evening, the RCMP responded to a disturbance at one of the local bars.

Two women were engaged in a physical confrontation.

A bar staff was struck over the head with a bottle but no injuries were sustained. A man became involved.

The disturbance had subsided by the time police ar-

rived. Bar staff dealt with the issue and banned a couple of people from attending the bar. No charges are being laid.

• On September 5th, members of the RCMP’s Columbia Valley Detachment responded to an assault complaint on Wilmer Pontoon Road. Both men involved complained that the other assaulted him. A 26-year-old Wilmer man and a 42-year-old man from Invermere were charged. No serious injuries were sustained.

• On September 5th, members of the Columbia Valley Detachment received a complaint of a man and woman leaving the Horse Thief Pub without paying for their meal. Neither was recognized as being local.

• On September 5th, police received a report of attempted theft of artwork hanging on the wall of Strands Restaurant in Invermere.

• On September 6th, the RCMP received a report of theft of a tent trailer from the 4000 block of Forsters Landing in Radium Hot Springs.

School Patrols With school in session again, the RCMP would like to remind drivers to SLOW DOWN, or the nice police person will write you up. Some of our younger kids are strutting their independence and walking to school without the assistance of their parents. Keep it slow in the school zone and get the kids there safe.

Thor Again While stationed in Maple Ridge, we got a call of a break-and-enter at a pharmacy. We arrived in time to see the suspect run into a wooded area. So, we called in my buddy, Thor, the wonder dog. We gave the guy a chance to come out on his own or Thor would be sent in. Thor was “bark bark (no surrender, no surrender),” but there was no response from the guy. So, Thor went in and did his thing.

BC Hydro OK’d to build north valley power line

By Brian Geis Pioneer Staff In a ruling handed down on September 3, the British Columbia Utilities Commission approved a controversial proposal to build a power line through the north end of the upper Columbia Valley.

The British Columbia Transmission Corporation applied in January for permission to construct and operate the line in order to supply more power to Golden from Invermere.

Despite vigorous objections by a number of interveners — including the Lake Windermere District Rod and Gun Club, Wildsight, Toby Benches resident Paul Bauman and Zehnder Farms, the Shuswap and Ktunaxa First Nations — the Utilities Commission said the $154 million project is in the public interest.

“The commission panel has reviewed and considered the application, the evidence and the submissions and has determined ... that the project is in the public interest and that a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity should be issued to BC Hydro,” the commission wrote in their decision.

The project includes a new 230-kilovolt transmission line, approximately 112 kilometres in length generally following the project’s Route Corridor B using the Moonraker West Route and the Toby Creek Diversion route.

The project also includes a new substation in Golden, a new 69-kilovolt transmission line approximately three kilometres in length, using the south crossing of the Columbia River, and related upgrades at existing substations in Cranbrook, Invermere and Golden.

In a 40-page rationale attached to the decision, the panel explained the reasons for their decision in which they addressed the project justification, project alternatives, environmental concerns, public and First Nations consultations and the risk management associated with the project.

As noted by the commission panel, the interveners did not take exception to the fundamental need for the project. However, a number of key issues did emerge and were addressed during the proceeding.

These include, for example: • The rationale for a proposed solution that continues to provide electricity to the upper Columbia Valley through a line up from Cranbrook, through Invermere, to the Golden area, rather than one that closes a loop such as might exist with a routing from Mica to Golden. This longer route would likely incur higher transmission line losses when electricity is routed from Mica through the Okanagan and Cranbrook to Golden, than would be incurred when taking a direct route from Mica to Golden.

• The rationale for a proposed solution that requires a new right-of-way on the west side of the Columbia River rather than utilizing the existing rightof-way on the east side of the Columbia River.

• The initial routing for the proposed solution that required two crossings across Toby Creek, that impacted private property and recreational areas, and, of particular concern, that could seriously impair the habitat of a local mountain goat herd.

• The adequacy of public consultations for airing concerns regarding the relationship of the CVT Project, the Transmission Expansion Policy (TEP), and independent power producers (IPPs).

In their conclusion, the panel explained, “After having carefully considered and weighed the evidence and arguments of all parties participating in this proceeding, the Commission Panel concludes that the project is needed to reliably serve the load in the upper Columbia Valley region.

“We find the project to be necessary and in the public interest as it is the most cost-effective long term solution.

“We also find that public consultation has been adequate. We further find First Nations consultation to be adequate to the10.25” point xof1.8” issuing this decision.”

HSTgate threatens to embroil premier

By Brian Geis Pioneer Editor For the premier, it must feel like the finals days of the Watergate scandal that toppled the U.S. government in 1974. As his enemies peel back the layers of the HST onion, charges that B.C.’s Liberal government were planning to propose the $2 billion tax grab we call the Harmonized Sales Tax well before the last election.

The possibility has broken the trust of some of the Liberal Party’s most loyal supporters leaving the party groping for the bottom as poll numbers plummet.

Whether or not HSTgate ultimately topples the Liberal’s dynasty depends on the answer to the question everyone is asking: What did they know and when did they know it?”

To some, the level of injury depends on the industry in which they work. A recent survey commissioned

by Royal LePage Real Estate Services might sour the opinion of those in real estate development and sales, one of the Columbia Valley’s key sectors.

According to reports in the Vancouver Sun, only one in four buyers who responded to the survey say new Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation regulations reduce their desire or ability to purchase a recreation property. The changes will require Canadians to pay a minimum 20 percent down payment on any residential or recreation property they buy that is not their primary home.

Buyers said they are more concerned about increases in taxation affecting their ability to buy vacation properties. Almost half, 49 percent, said they are concerned about new taxation rules, such as B.C.’s HST on new homes.

Fossil is calimari, not trilobite Dear Editor: I enjoyed Kelsy Verboom’s article on the hike to Pedley Pass. I have been up there many times and enjoyed searching for fossils at what has become known to hikers as “Fossil Lake.” I am not an expert paleontologist, but I do not think the photo is actually a Trilobite, but rather a nautiloid known as squid or, our favorite appetizer, calamari.

The comments by Dr. Randle Robertson were correct, however, I question whether he actually saw the photo you published and identified it as a Trilobite.

Other fossils we have found there include an-

cient corals, shells, sponges and snails. Their geologic age is Ordovician-Silurian and they are part of the Beaverfoot Brisco Formation (approx 450 million years), not Cambrian or 526 million as suggested.

The three closest trilobite fossils that I know of are approximately three miles south of Fort Steele, at the famous Burgess Shale near Field which is a World Heritage Site, and at a new discovery recently made at Stanley Glacier in Kootenay National Park.

Can farmer’s market accommodate home biz?

Dear Editor: The summer is officially over and with that so are the markets. I want to personally thank the Invermere Legion for hosting a Vendors Market this year.

The Legion saw the need for local members of our community who had home-based businesses to show their products. Anyone who runs a home based business knows how difficult it can be to get “out there” and share their products with others.

Many markets have rules that say “only home-made” items allowed so anyone who has a product that they didn’t make themselves need not apply.

Unfortunately that area is a little grey since part of an item can be bought elsewhere and then put together to sell as homemade.

I have traveled to other parts of Canada and visited open markets. I have found a mixture of everything and something for everyone. Why can’t Invermere also accompany that?

I would understand the rule that if someone makes a product and you are selling one like it then the homemade product takes right-away but lets face it there are many great products that we

buy and use that required more technology than my home operation can handle. Is space a problem here or could we move the location slightly to accommodate more vendors?

I don’t know about you, but I have attempted to walk through the market to buy something only to find out it is so congested that I end up leaving.

Now, of course, its great to have the crowds but could another space work better? Wouldn’t it be great to have everyone all together in one BIG open space and invite everyone as long as its decent, to show the community what’s available?

Many markets have picnic tables that you can sit down and enjoy your food while listening to the entertainment. Invermere has a lot to offer so lets not railroad our efforts in rules that are not healthy for a growing community.

We are a community by working with one another, not against another.

I know only the best intentions are out there to organize these events but don’t forget about the other ‘little guys’ who need a slice of the pie as well.

Government Regional district briefs Regional district board calls for the return of the long-form census The Regional District of East Kootenay Board of Directors has thrown its support behind the National Statistics Council’s proposal — that is endorsed by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities — calling on the Government of Canada to reinstate the long-form questionnaire in the 2011 Census.

It also directs Statistics Canada to examine each question and weigh the benefits of its inclusion in the 2016 Census and to remove the jail time penalties associated with not filling out the Census.

Board approves grants for Columbia Valley residents The regional district board approved a $1500 grant to the Windermere Community Association to purchase “Slow Down” safety signs to be posted throughout the community.

The Columbia Valley Crime Prevention and Intervention Society will receive $2600 from the the regional district board to help cover operational costs.

Public invited to comment on Columbia Lake moorage bylaws Bylaws 2245 and 2246 will amend the Fairmont Hot Springs Area OCP and the Upper Columbia Valley Zoning Bylaw to provide new opportunities for private community moorage on Columbia Lake.

Bylaw 2245 establishes a new policy framework in the OCP for considering applications for the development of private community moorage.

Bylaw 2246 amends the zoning of the Lake by regulating private mooring buoys and establishing a new zone for private community moorage where both

overnight moorage and buoys will be permitted.

The public hearing for Bylaws 2245 and 2246 will be held September 20th, 2010 in Fairmont Hot Springs.

Landfill to charge interest on overdue bills The Waste Management Regulatory Bylaws for the Central, Elk Valley and Columbia Valley regions have been amended to include an interest penalty of two percent per month on overdue charges.

Sosnowski appointed to represent regional district on group working to regulate off-road vehicles Electoral Area A Director Mike Sosnowski (250423-1029) has been appointed to represent the Regional District of East Kootenay on the Local Government Off Road Vehicle Working Group.

The working group is made up of local elected officials who will provide feedback to Ministry officials as the province proceeds to develop the regulations and policies that will establish a new framework for managing off road vehicles in British Columbia.

For Windermere couple Bill Croft and Nora Efford, a vacation through the Northwest Passage turned into more of an adventure than they anticipated when their Arctic cruise ship ran aground and made news headlines across Canada.

Bill, 80, and Nora, 63, travel often and decided to take an educational-style cruise through the Northwest Passage to learn more about Inuit culture and the biodiversity in the north, so they boarded the MV Clipper Adventurer in Greenland and set out on a 15day cruise with around 200 other passengers and crew.

On Friday, August 27th, the final evening of Bill and Nora’s Arctic expedition, their ship was en route from Port Epworth to Kugluktuk, Nunavut, when it struck an uncharted rock in three metres of water in Nunavut’s Coronation Gulf. The 90-metre ship ran up onto the rock and came to a halt at a slight five-degree tilt, leaving crew and passengers sitting at sea for 41 hours before being rescued.

Although no one on the ship panicked, the noise when the ship struck the rock was startling, Bill said.

“It was calm, sunny weather, the ocean was calm, it was late in the afternoon and we were steaming for Coppermine [Kugluktuk], when all of a sudden — bang! There was a heavy rumble and ‘bang,’ but also the screech of the metal scraping over the rock. The sound was pretty scary.

“My immediate thought was ‘oh my god, we are tearing the bottom out of the ship . . . but then it was obvious we were aground, and there was immediate relief that we weren’t about to sink.”

From the ship’s resting point atop the rock, passengers could see over a metre of the red paint on the ship’s hull, which is normally underwater, Bill said.

“Here we were, stuck on the top of a rocky spire with a flat top. The ship went fully onto the rock so the front end was almost about to go off the other side.

We beached it.”

With nothing to do but wait, life aboard the ship continued as normal. Aside from being prohibited

During the next high tide, the ship’s captain tried unsuccessfully to dislodge the ship by thrusting the propellers. Meanwhile, the Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker boat, Amundsen, was dispatched from more than 800 kilometres away to rescue the ship’s occupants.

Amundsen arrived on Sunday, two days after the ship struck ground. Passengers were transferred from the cruise ship to the icebreaker using zodiac boats, and then ferried to Kugluktuk’s community centre where they spent the night sleeping on the floor before being flown to Edmonton and transported home.

Once ashore, Bill and Nora were surprised to learn their ordeal had made national news headlines. “There was a bit of laughter of course. The second reaction was that they must be short of news,” Bill said.

“In retrospect it could have been a tragedy . . . we could have grazed it and pulled a Titanic and cut the side open, but really, we just waited.”

Movie Review: Solitary Man Reviewed by Dave Sutherland Solitary Man is an often hilarious, character-driven movie. It stars Michael Douglas in a role that ranks among his best.

Douglas plays disgraced businessman Ben Kalman, who is afflicted at mid-life with a touch of Peter Pan syndrome.

After a medical test confirms that he has a possible heart problem, Ben’s life begins to unravel. He loses the fortune he amassed as a car-dealership baron by engaging in shady business practices, and his marriage to Nancy (Susan Sarandon) dissolves when he begins sleeping with a parade of younger women.

His escapades, in turn, strain his relationship with his grown daughter.

After he commits the ultimate transgression with the teenage daughter of his current girlfriend, Ben’s downward spiral accelerates exponentially.

Ben Kalman is a shallow, cynical, and self-destructive man with nearly no redeeming features, but due to Douglas’ brutally honest portrayal, you may find yourself liking him in spite of yourself.

The supporting actors in Solitary Man are a treat to watch.

Susan Sarandon is an island of calm in Ben’s storm-tossed life. She knows what he’s become, but not why, and has gone on to her own successes. Jenna Fischer plays Ben’s daughter, Susan, who finally takes a tough-love approach to her irresponsible father.

Danny DeVito is suitably understated as Ben’s old friend Jimmy, a diner owner whose good advice on

marriage and life falls on deaf ears.

Jesse Eisenberg (Zombieland) plays stammering uncertainty like no one else can. Mary-Louise Parker is alternately loving and menacing as Jordan, Ben’s wronged girlfriend, and Imogen Poots is convincingly knowing, yet erratic, as her 18 year-old daughter.

The witty, glib, and extremely funny script for Solitary Man was written by Brian Koppelman, who co-directed with David Levien.

The two also co-wrote Rounders, Knockaround Guys and Ocean’s Thirteen.

Meet Bird at The Artym Submitted by Deanna Berrington The Artym Gallery The mountains have a rugged power many artists strive to capture. Few do so as well as Cameron Bird. His unquestionably Canadian style harkens back to the pioneers of Canadian art like Tom Thompson, Emily Carr and the Group of Seven. Cameron will be at the opening reception for his latest solo exhibition at the Artym Gallery on Friday, September 10th.

Although still a young man, Mr. Bird has been painting professionally for almost 20 years, full time for half as long.

“You have to be a certain type of person to jump away from a very secure job,” he said. “My family of professionals thought I was crazy... [but] for me, it was scarier to stay (on the job) than it was to quit. You know exactly what’s coming, what’s going to happen until retirement.”

Featured in this solo exhibition of his work will be new landscape paintings, and some of Bird’s latest endeavors: his contemporary animal paintings. Cameron has focused on recognizable landscapes, mountains and lakes we all know and love: Castle Mountain, Em-

erald Lake, Chisel Peak, and the Three Sisters, to name a few. The contemporary animal paintings include the always-popular moose and grizzly bears, as well as bighorn sheep, elk and coyotes.

This year, as in past years, a giclée print of “Kootenay Bull,” featured on the cover of The Pioneer’s 2010 Columbia Valley Map Book, is available for purchase in two sizes as a fund-raiser for the Invermere Hospital. Cameron will be signing the prints this weekend and will be able to personalize them as well. In 2006, Mr. Bird’s scene of Chisel Peak with the lake in the foreground was chosen as the Map Book cover. There are very few giclées of this landscape still available.

This is a great opportunity to support a local cause, collect a striking piece, or the pair, and have it personalized by the artist.

Summit Trail Makers clear the way

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff A local volunteer organization that works to regularly maintain area hiking trails is seeking more hands to help with brush-clearing work.

The Summit Trail Makers’ Society, formed in 2001, is a registered organization that was founded by the late George Deck and Dennis Hemus.

The group identifies overgrown trails and access roads in the back country, and then hosts work bees to clear encroaching alders and other vegetation.

What began as a purely philanthropic society has become more of a necessity now that the Ministry of Forests has cut back on road maintenance, said the group’s treasurer and avid hiker, John Ashby.

“The Ministry of Forests no longer maintains some of the roads out there,” he said. “After everyone got laid off, nothing sort of goes into road maintenance now unless there’s active logging in the area.

“If we don’t do it, nobody would unfortunately.

So I guess it’s partly altruistic, and partly it’s selfish because if we didn’t do it, we wouldn’t be able to hike.”

The Summit Trail Makers usually host around six work gatherings each year between June and October.

So far this season they were able to clear access to the McLean Lake and Lake of the Hanging Glacier areas.

Past projects include the trails and roads of Welsh Lakes, Chalice Creek and the Silver Basin.

Although the society has 91 registered members, only between seven and 15 people usually help with brush clearing, Mr. Ashby said.

“It would be great to have more bodies coming out to do the work,” he said. “You don’t need to have

“It’s great to be out there and be in the outdoors putting something back into what we enjoy doing.”

Mr. Ashby encouraged people to become a member even if they can’t help clear trails.

Time for a change.

Columbia Valley Botanical Gardens and Centre for Sustainable Living is not a name that rolls off the tongue; some might even call it confusing. For years the group has talked about giving its name a good pruning, but that has not been an easy task.

Now the CVBG/CSL is looking for help; it’s asking for suggestions on a new name that more concisely reflects the wide range of activities with which the group is involved.

“We need a name that reflects all of our interests,” said board chair Richard Unger, “and that includes the Heritage Garden at Pynelogs, the community greenhouse by the high school, our school gardening programs, the college programs we help deliver, and a host of other things. It is not an easy group to sum up.”

Led by Dave Zehnder, the group first broke ground in 1999 on the gardens by Pynelogs.

The next year they set the goal of developing a formal botanical garden

with all of the collecting, cataloguing, and research required for such an endeavour.

While they never met the scientific criteria needed for a registered plant collection, the heritage garden is now a community showpiece.

The group’s second stream of interests began about five years ago when the idea of a centre for sustainable living was first floated.

With a lot of hard work and volunteer effort, they built the 300-square metre Community Greenhouse, which officially opened in June, 2009.

Communities throughout western Canada have requested information on the facility, which is a showcase for an array of sustainable energy technologies such as solar power.

Rebranding can be a challenge, but CVBG/CSL is keen to start the process and is offering a prize to whomever submits the winning name: free registration in any of its courses or workshops.

The group hopes to present the leading candidates for a new name at its annual Harvest Dinner, which is beingheld on October 2nd at Eagle Ranch.

Movie making madness at College of the Rockies

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff Budding Steven Spielbergs had the chance to let their cameras roll and create their own films during the Junior Directors’ Movie Camp at the College of the Rockies in Invermere last month.

Twelve students aged 9­­­­-­­­13 spent five days learning the basics of movie making from outdoor adventure filmmaker Jason Mitchell of Kimberley.

Camp participants were provided with handheld, high-definition cameras to capture footage during shoots around Invermere at the skate park, the beach, and downtown.

“It’s a great opportunity for kids to explore the creative side of video,” Mr. Mitchell said. “It’s a one-of-akind program in B.C. as far as I know.”

Each day, the young filmmakers visited a location around town and practiced shooting footage from different angles and for various types of movies.

They then downloaded their footage and learned how to edit their clips into stop-motion, time lapse, and slow motion movies.

On the last day of the program, parents were invited for a special screening of their mini moviemakers’

finished projects.

Camp participants weren’t required to have any previous knowledge of filmmaking, although some had already explored the art on their own.

“I’ve done a few movies before, but not that many,” Savanna Neale, 11, said. “I liked finding out more about how to make your own movies, because then when I’m bored with my friends, we can make one.

There’s so much cool stuff you can do on the computer, like turning the movie into black-and-white.”

Savanna is from Canal Flats where she lives with her mom, Nathalie Neale.

Many of the participants agreed the best part of the camp was learning how to make a stop-motion movie.

Stop-motion film take a series of still photographs and stitches them together to make a movie.

Invermere’s Amanda Geamanu, 9, made a stopmotion movie to make it look as though she were flying.

“After this week, I’m probably going to make more movies with what I’ve learned,” she said. Amanda’s parents are Romi and Horai Geamanu.

The camp is planned to run again next year to give more aspiring moviemakers the opportunity to step behind a camera and learn more about the craft.

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff Word aficionados rejoice; The Invermere Public Library is hosting a public Scrabble night. Crawl into your games closest, scrape the dust from your scrabble tiles, and join other Scrabble enthusiast for a night of wordplay.

The free event begins at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, September 22nd at the library. Warm refreshments and treats will be available to fuel players’ word combinations.

Film contest deadline approaching

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff In celebration of 125 years of national parks in Canada, the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society and Parks Canada are holding a video-making contest to let parks users showcase the beauty of their favourite park.

The contest has been open since July, but so far, not a single entry has been received for Kootenay National Park.

Participants are asked to submit a video online that is under two minutes long. The contest is open to anyone, and entrants can film on anything that records video — even an iphone.

The creative scope is wide open for the contest, but the videos should entertain, educate, and enlighten viewers about one of Canada’s 42 national parks.

Once a video has been posted online, website visitors can vote on their favourite flick. The top video

in each park will win an annual park pass, while the overall winner gets a guided trip for two down the South Nahanni river in the Northwest Territories worth $15,000.

There are also weekly prize draws, so the sooner a video is posted, the more chances it has to win.

Valley women finish strong in American race

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff Four fleet-footed females have returned from the challenging TranRockies Run in Buena Vista, Colorado, with race results that surprised even themselves.

Last month, Carolyn Hawes, Kathy Borasto, Liz Vanderkruk, and Kristy Altman traveled south of the border to run in a six-day race across 180 kilometres of the Colorado Rockies.

From August 22nd through August 27th, they raced as two separate teams of two in a category for women with a combined age of over 80 years. On the final day of the race, the four ladies ran across the finish line in third and fourth place out of the 18 teams in their category.

“That was quite a bit better than we anticipated,” Ms. Altman said. “When we went into this, our goal was to have fun and not finish last. It had never even occurred to us that we could be on the podium. It felt great going in as an older

racer and still being competitive. That was a huge surprise to us and a great feeling.”

Ms. Vanderkruk and Ms. Hawes placed third with a time of 25 hours, 33 minutes, and 37 seconds. Close behind in fourth place were Ms. Borasto and Ms. Altman in 25 hours, 44 minutes, and 24 seconds.

“We were always close to one another through the whole thing,” Ms. Altman said. “Each day when we went into the race, one of us would be in third and one in fourth, and we would switch positions along the way.”

Although placing in the race was rewarding, it was the scenery and diversity of people they met along the way that really completed the adventure, Ms. Altman said.

“There were people there from France, Germany, Israel . . . we ran through beautiful countryside and met so many interesting people.”

The four women have all returned to the valley and are giving their muscles a well-deserved rest.

Resort to

Paws for a Cause will walk from Pothole Park

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff Rev your pooch’s engine and get ready to walk in the British Columbia SPCA’s annual Paws for a Cause fund raising event.

The province-wide charitable fun walk is designed for both owners and dogs to get out and lend a hand — or paw — to generate support for the B.C. SPCA’s care and protection of animals.

“All of the money raised goes to the Cranbrook SPCA. One hundred percent,” said event organizer Kira Kulicki, who will be bringing her own dog, Mr. Bear, to participate in the festivities.

Invermere’s walk will be held this Sunday, September 12th at Pothole Park. It costs $25 per family to walk in the event, and registration begins at 10 a.m.

Between 10 and 11 a.m., partici-

pants will visit in Pothole Park and enjoy juice and baked goods donated by Invermere’s Quality Bakery.

At 11 a.m., canines and their humans will walk the side streets of Invermere for a choice of either two or three kilometres, and return to Pothole Park for a barbeque, silent auction and children’s craft table.

As a special treat, there will also be a demonstration from a Cranbrook RCMP dog.

“We’re hoping for at least 50 people at this year’s event,” Ms. Kulicki said.

“Bring your dog out and have fun. Even if you don’t have a dog, you can still come and have fun.”

Ms. Kulicki noted how generous the community has been in donating silent auction pieces and helping make the event possible.

Anyone wishing to enter or donate can do so during registration.

Inaugural bike race at Nipika this weekend

By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff Tire treads will be spinning this Sunday, September 12th at Nipika Mountain Resort during the first ever Kootenay Krusher endurance mountain bike race.

The race will wind in a cloverleaf format for 50 kilometres along Nipika’s singletrack bike trails. The course, which has been used as the Transrockies bike race time trial course, focuses on pedalling, with rolling climbs and only 529 metres of elevation gain.

Food and water stations will dot the course, which is expected to take riders two-and-a-half to four hours to complete. The cutoff time is six hours, which allows plenty of time for an intermediate biker to finish, race organizers said.

The race is split into a number of men’s and women’s categories for racers aged 19 to 50-plus.

The Kootenay Krusher is a fund raiser for the Columbia Valley Cycling Society, which is a group of volunteers who work to maintain biking trails in the valley.

A week before the race, organizers expected around 100 racers to participate.

“The course looks great, and it looks like the sun might even come out for us,” said one of the event’s organizers, Kevin Andruschuck.

“If you’ve maybe been on the fence about coming out to race, we’ll be accepting online registrations up until 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 11th, or in person on Sunday morning.”

Green Zone: Black Mountain Golf Club

By Harold Hazelaar Pioneer Columnist On the long weekend, I had the opportunity to play the Black Mountain Golf Club in Kelowna. It is one of the area’s newest courses, opening for play in 2009.

It is a course you will need to play more than once.

The initial trip around the course will probably leave you discouraged.

The lies are extremely tight, and the hilly, narrow fairways leave you in situations where you don’t know what to hit your second shot with.

An abundance of sand traps, especially around the greens, will undoubtedly catch you once or twice, so make sure you clean the grooves on your sand wedge.

The Black Mountain Golf Club website makes this claim: We do NOT provide what I call the “WHITE GLOVE SERVICE” you will find at other Premier Championship courses in the Okanagan.

At Black Mountain Golf Club we will NOT....be picking you up or greeting your group in the parking lot; have GPS on our golf carts; provide elaborate free yardage guides; be cleaning your clubs after your round; have coolers or ballwashers

on our golf carts.

And we will NEVER hold out our hand for a tip.

We do not feel these “Service Touches” are worth the $50 plus (our highest green fee rate is $69 and other Premier Championship courses in the Okanagan are $100 plus).

We prefer to pass those savings onto you, our guest. Therefore, we feel our rates are very affordable and we offer a great value.

I can attest to the truth in this statement.

I can also tell you that playing around of golf for $69 bucks on a weekend at Black Mountain is a treat, even if you don’t score very well.

The greens are immaculate, the fairways lush and the rough is rough!

Straight ball hitters will do fine here. If you spray your tee ball around a bit, you might want to leave the driver in the bag and play something safer off the tees.

The restaurant and staff were great and I recommend you try this course next time you visit Kelowna.

The evening was a fitting military tribute with solo performances on the saxophone (Alisha), bugle (Sue), and drum set (Jason) for a decorated soldier who proudly served 23 years with the 1st and 3rd Battalions of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in Canada, West Germany, and UN Peacekeeping tour in Cyprus, before retiring in 1993. Ron’s unique, handcrafted woodworking skills can be seen throughout the Columbia Valley and British Columbia and his creations will be enjoyed by all for many years to come. We love and miss him very much; words cannot express our sorrow at this time.

Daniel Richard “Rick” Bannerman August 27, 1978 – August 25, 2010 Dan, known by most as Rick, passed away the morning of August 25, 2010.

Dan loved 4x4ing and spent his days cleaning the Jeep just to get it mucked up again. He was an avid outdoors person and enjoyed looking out over the Valley. In winter he enjoyed snowboarding and in earlier years, played and refereed Minor Hockey.

He is survived by his Mother, Fiona Burills, sister, Jennifer Bannerman (Alan), numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and great cousins.

His remains will be laid to rest in Evergreen Cemetary in Grand Forks, B.C., with his maternal Nana.

Back in March, the Windermere Valley Minor Hockey Association’s Peewee Rep team went to Provincials in Clearwater, BC. A great time was had by all, players and parents alike.

We had a rough start and ended up with only 12 players – including the goalie! With that challenge ahead of them the kids worked so hard and came away from each game with very few point differences.

It was such awesome, exciting hockey to watch and be a part of. Every one of our players stepped up and made us PROUD. The kids came home with the Fair Play Award, and came in fifth place. Way to go!

We would like to thank (better late than never...) all of our family and friends for their fundraising efforts, and a special Thank You to all of you who kindly donated to our team to help us on our journey. There are many of you to list, so please know who you are and know how much you are appreciated! The fellow was high on something and put up a struggle. We called for a police vehicle and struggled to get him in the car.

The officer who got out of the police vehicle left it in neutral, and the car was rolling on us. We had all the doors open trying to get at the brakes.

It was just a chaotic scene of everyone scrambling around while trying to get the prisoner in the back seat of a rolling car.

Finally, the person was in the back and we slammed all the doors. The car was properly parked and the four of us and the dog handler are now trying to catch our breath.

The dog man called for Thor and we quickly realized Thor was missing.

The RCMP does not look kindly on losing a police dog. With my history with Thor, I figured he went AWOL. Fire him!

While searching for him, I heard a tapping noise.

I ignored the tapping as we had a major problem on hand. The tapping got just a little louder and, finally, I looked at the prisoner who was squeezed up against the window and frozen in place except for his finger frantically tapping on the window.

The prisoner caught my attention and in a slow, deliberate and careful manner pointed to his left.

There sat Thor really confused about the predicament he is in.

Thor was probably thinking, “This was never part of the training, babysitting.”

Personally, I thought this was a good place for him. Dog man quickly opened the door and I heard the official police command: “Get the hell out of the car.”

Thor responded, “Bark, bark, bark, snarl, bark, saliva, bark, (with a final) bark.”

Clearly interpreted as: “Did I close the freagan door on me? No. Did I jump out of the driver’s seat and leave the car in neutral? No. Did I participate in the Keystone Kop calamity that I just witnessed? No. Did I do my job? Yes. Just say good boy and give me my ball as a reward.”

Reasons people don’t go to church these days

By Pastor Trevor Hagan Lake Windermere Alliance Church Popular culture is full of loose terms.

Many people throw out ‘organized religion’ without much thought.

What exactly is organized religion?

Perhaps it means that a governing body of sorts — a group of leaders or rulers — unilaterally determining what is and isn’t right for people.

Or, maybe your understanding of the term is related to previous experience of denominational culture and the different way things are done by Alliance Churches, Anglicans, Lutherans, Catholics, United Churches, and many more.

Let’s dig a little deeper into the term ‘organized religion’ itself.

Trouble is, church by its very nature has to be organized. Religion is the real issue. In fact, Jesus spent more time rebuking the Pharisees on this topic than anything else.

The Pharisees were the organized religion of that time, and they had made it all about rules and do’s and don’ts at the expense of a realistic understanding of the love of God (Yeah, I bet you still know some of them, right?).

The church of today still has its share of Pharisees.

It’s sad, but true.

Just like in government, you will always have somebody in every church that is too conservative, too rigid, and resistant to change. You’ve probably even worked with people who have a my-way-or-thehighway” mind set — and of course, you are always on their wrong side, because you don’t measure up to their definition of what you’re supposed to say, do, or be!

Organized religion is not really what it’s about; discovering God and meeting Him in the person of Jesus is what it’s about. Sometimes this means rising above a few Pharisees you meet along the way.

So, what would disorganized religion look like, anyway? Anything goes! “Hey, buddy, if it feels right, it must be OK, right?” “Any way you choose is OK, as long as it makes you feel good.”

While these paradigms can seem freeing and easy to embrace at first, you’ve probably discovered that they deliver a pretty empty, unfocused life. You quickly find out why these attitudes are not what God desires for us.

Churches are places where people — and their issues — gather. God purposely designed people to find Him through an organized, imperfect group called the church.

Otherwise, we can’t authentically share the truth of God, experience His love, connect with others who feel the same, and implement His way of living in an imperfect world.

Yes, organized religion may be a faulty term, but organized churches really are essential to helping you find God.
