Grizzly Ridge subdivision supported By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff The regional district board has offered support to an application to subdivide a portion of the Grizzly Ridge land holdings, south and west of Invermere. The owner of Grizzly Ridge Properties, Mark Himmelspach, has been working to get backing from the Regional District of East Kootenay to subdivide part of his 3,280-acre property after multiple proposals for annexation by Invermere failed. The application proposes the creation of five parcels out of two separate land titles. This was supported by the board, subject to a restrictive covenant preventing further subdivision. Speaking at the meeting on Friday, August 6th, Mr. Himmelspach gave a presentation on the proposed changes at the site. This included details on the areas suggested for subdivision, the probable size of land parcels and the impact on agriculture. “We have come before the board as an application for subdivision,” Mr. Himmelspach reiterated. “We are not applying for the removal of land from the Agricultural Land Reserve.”
Grizzly Ridge Properties Ltd. are looking to subdivide parts of the site which sit on the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR), making one lot of 170 acres by Paddy Ryan Lakes and four additional lots of between 255 and 295 acres. However the discussion on final acreages is ongoing as, according to Mr. Himmelspach, the original boundaries drawn in the 1960s are in error. “A number of the adjacent land owners’ parcels are a lot smaller,” Mr. Himmelspach said. “We are proposing 260- to 300-acre parcels.” Grizzly Ridge Properties has carried out a survey of the agricultural uses for the land. This determined that although the land is in the ALR and agricultural use is prioritized for this area, the majority of the land is non-arable and deficient in soil nutrients. The developer also reiterated that he does not intend to return to the regional district and ask for further subdivision, should his current plans be approved. Mr. Himmelspach faced opposition at the meeting from landowner Randy McRoberts, who has property adjacent to Grizzly Ridge. He claimed that the subdivision violates the Official Community Plan (OCP) for Lake Windermere,
which includes four of the five parcels. “I am totally opposed to this,” Mr. McRoberts said. “It flies in the face of the OCP, completely ignoring it.” The Lake Windermere Official Community Plan generally requires a minimum of 296-acre parcels of land, of which the parcels proposed by Grizzly Ridge fall just short. Mr. McRoberts also spoke of his concern of the subdivision of land by Paddy Ryan Lakes, a water source for the town of Invermere. “One parcel contains the District of Invermere water supply,” he said. “If you approve this you take it away from the District of Invermere. It’s a serious matter, that’s a drinking supply.” Despite expressing some reservations, all Regional Directors voted in favour of supporting the proposed subdivision, recommending that a covenant be placed on the land to prevent further subdivision. “I think the covenant Mr. McRoberts suggested is very important,” commented Area G Director Gerry Wilkie. The final decision on whether the subdivision and any covenant go ahead rests with the Agricultural Land Commission.
Ronald Johnston missing after plane crashes into ocean By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff The father of Invermere businesswoman Lindsay Johnston is missing following a airplane crash off the coast of Nova Scotia on Thursday, August 5th. The small Cessna plane containing Mr. Johnston and another man disappeared off the coast of Glace Bay near Sydney, N.S., on Thursday night. Lyndsay was made aware of the crash early on Friday morning, after members of the RCMP contacted her mother in Calgary.
“My sister and I came out here with the hope to bring my dad home” said Ms. Johnston, speaking from Nova Scotia, where she has been since Saturday with sister, Paige. “It has been a very frustrating few days as our hopes became less and less...We don’t think they are going to find him alive, but we’re still hoping to find the plane.” Search and rescue efforts turned to search and recovery on Saturday, after Mr. Johnston and the other occupant of the plane, businessman, Dennis Forgeron, had been missing for two days.
Search teams are optimistic that they have found the right area to look for the wreckage and are now using sonar equipment to search, but efforts are being hampered by continued bad weather. A director of Silvore Fox Minerals and an experience pilot, Mr. Johnston enjoyed visiting the Columbia Valley from his home in Calgary. “Last time I saw him was in Invermere, which he loved,” Ms. Johnston added. “He was really proud to see Ballfest [an event organized by Ms. Johnston] go well. I’m proud I last saw him happy, somewhere he loved.”

• On August 6th at 10:19 p.m., members of the RCMP’s Columbia Valley detachment were advised of a theft in progress in the 100 block of Industrial Road #2, Invermere. An employee was in the shop and saw two men stealing batteries. He said he noticed an older, red, extend-a-cab pickup (mid 1980s) with wood panels and a white stripe, turn into the parking lot by the garbage can where he was locking the gate. A man — approximately 40 years of age — was relieving himself beside the dumpster where approximately 12 to 16 recyclable car batteries (worth $10 to $15 each) were located. The employee briefly spoke to the man, then noticed the truck leave and that the batteries were gone. Nothing else was missing. The vehicle was seen traveling south on Panorama Road, heading towards Invermere. The employee said he has seen the truck before. • On August 6th at 2:19 p.m., the RCMP received a report of a semi truck collision on Highway 93, approximately 14 kilometers east of Radium Hot Springs. At 2:43 p.m. police arrived at the collision scene, approximately 300 meters west of a brake check by Olive Lake. Police spoke to the driver who said: “I just left the brake check, I was going about 40.” The driver explained it was raining hard and as he rounded a sharp right hand curve his trailer started to come around. Police did not see any tire marks on the road surface, but spotted several gauge marks in the westbound ditch, believed to be caused by the driver’s Kenworth tractor, which was badly damaged. Police issued the driver a ticket for speeding relative to conditions. • On August 6th, Invermere police were told of of a theft of shoes from a local shoe store in the 1200 block of 7th Avenue, Invermere. An employee and the store owner reported that sometime over the long weekend a woman had stolen shoes valued at $170. The employee noticed this when he reviewed the store’s surveillance video. This tape will be seized and
still photos used to identify the woman. • On August 7th, police were conducting patrols around Windermere when they were stopped by Lake Street resident. He reported that he had just seen a 1996 Chevrolet S10 roll into his yard and hit his boat trailer. The truck did not have any occupants and there were no licence plates. Police inquired into the vehicle and it came back as being inactive, and with the last registered owner as a woman in Cranbrook. The lights and radio were still on in the truck and a cold can of beer in the cup holder. Damages to the 2008 Mastercraft boat trailer are estimated to be $500. • On August 7th, RCMP received a call of shots fired at Cleland Lake by Brisco. The call stated that there was a group of people using a .22 rifle to shoot at things by the campground. The man who made the complaint approached the group of adults, youths and children, asking them to stop. They argued and the man left with a group of people on a boat. He said he heard, “take that” and a shot fired by a high powered rifle. However, the man did not see where the shot was fired or who shot it, as his back was turned. The group then left the scene. Police located the suspects who said they were at Cleland Lake with their kids and another group, shooting at pop cans at a safe location. A man approached them and got very angry, telling the group to leave. They then packed up and left the scene. Another shot was not fired. The young children in the vehicle said they were shooting at potatoes with a hill directly behind their targets. The suspects had a valid shooting license and were not charged, but were reminded of safe shooting practices and locations. • Over the night of August 7th, 2010 a window was broken at the food shack at Springs Golf Course in Radium Hot Springs. It was reported the window was broken with a potted plant. It did not appear that anyone entered the building or that anything was taken. No evidence was left and there are no houses nearby, so no neighbourhood inquiries took place. Damage was estimated at around $300.

Regitnig named Pioneer Publisher By Pioneer Staff Rose-Marie Regitnig has been appointed Publisher of the Columbia Valley Pioneer. Rose-Marie’s background has been primarily in the hotel and resort industry and she has extensive management experience in positions of progressive responsibility. Bob Doull, President of the Pioneer said, “I originally contacted Rose-Marie to do some consulting projects for us starting in April. I knew she had received advanced management training when she worked for Intrawest Resorts and we needed help with organizing our production flow and budgeting for our different publications. We were delighted with the result so we have asked her to stay on as Publisher. She has a good general knowledge of management practices, she understands our need to serve the community and she brings an outsider’s perspective to our industry. This is critical at a time of transition for newspapers. The old idea of didactic newspapers has passed and we now function along lines that are more flexible
and responsive to our readers. Rose-Marie’s energy and enthusiasm for our publications will help us to continually reinvent ourselves as we move forward.” Originally from Sweden, Rose-Marie spent many summers in Invermere as a child. She moved here in 1991 after starting her career in the hotel industry in Whistler in 1986. Rose-Marie grew up in a newspaper family in Sweden. Her stepfather was Publisher of the Sala Allehanda for 35 years and from him she developed a lifelong interest in publishing. Rose-Marie presently lives in Invermere with her three children, Sophia, Max and Henrik. Sophia will be leaving the community in September to start studies at the University of Victoria. During her time at the Pioneer, Rose-Marie has developed respect and admiration for the Pioneer staff and the small miracle they accomplish every week. She shares the high level of commitment each one brings to the community and to their individual craft. She looks forward to continuing to serve the community and its many visitors.

By Brian Geis Pioneer Editor Who could have imagined the sensational controversy of the summer would erupt from the protests of Canada’s statisticians to the federal government’s relaxation of census requirements! I am sure Prime Minister Stephen Harper is shocked his seemingly innocuous cost-saving measure resulted in the indignant resignation of Canada’s top statistician. However, when it was discovered the fundamental change in the 40-year-old policy was buried last June at a time the public was awash in news of the G20 riots inToronto and the Queen’s visit to Canada, alarm bells rang out. This week, speaking out on the topic for the first time, Mr. Harper defended the decision citing privacy issues. To some it might not sound like such a big deal, but to others, like those of us in the media, it is a disappointment. Reporters — whose job it is to understand and explain — are among those who crave and plumb census data for excruciating detail about our community, our province, our nation and how we rank among the community of nations. Some who are critical of the decision say the most vulnerable among — aboriginals and low-income people — will suffer as a result and survey data will be skewed in favour of the affluent. No doubt. In our effort to understand and enlighten, I believe, the more information we have the better off we will be.

Mrs. Williams’ first name is Braidwood Dear Editor: My name is Shannon McClelland. I am the great-granddaughter of Mrs. Braidwood Williams. I was lucky to be sent your article about “Mrs. H. Williams” in the July 30th edition from a friend who still lives in the Valley. Wonderful article. I can remember listening on the radio years ago to this story being told in her own voice. My great-grandmother passed away in March, 1977. Her only daughter Elizabeth, better known to valley people as Bessie Hoglund, lives in a lodge in the same town as myself.
She is 95 years old and still has a very sharp mind, and remembers all of the tales of trial and tribulations. I was wondering if you could please keep me about five copies of this edition as I am coming to Winderemere this week on vacation and would like to give them to my children as a keep sake. Also, by the way, the picture that was portrayed is not Mrs. H. Williams. I will see if my grandmother recognizes it, as I will read her the article today. Shannon McClelland Black Diamond, Alberta

An easterner reflects on her journey west Dear Editor: As a child growing up on the east coasts of Canada and the U.S., the west was a land of mountains, clean air, crisp water, and abundant wildlife. This was a part of the world I had not yet seen. I never thought that one day all four of those western elements would be found in my own backyard. In 2006, my boyfriend, our 11-year-old dog and I started the long journey from Ontario to B.C., stopping just long enough to admire our beautiful country along the way. Going through all the provinces made us realize just how varied our Canadian lifestyles are. On our travels, we met many people and lived in many places, including a campground in Kamloops where we lived in a tent and, later, a small trailer. When we had to leave the campground, we moved the trailer to the construction site where my boyfriend was working. We also stayed in an abandoned bus in the backyard of an old friend. We went back to Alberta for work and lived at another construction site in our compact car and our final destination was in Airdrie at a cheap motel with a kitchenette. At the motel one night, I was looking through a popular Calgary newspaper and saw a tiny advertisement in the 10 or more pages of the classifieds. Jumping out at me like at lightning bolt, it advertised cabins for rent in a small place called Spillimacheen, B.C. We called that night and arrived the next afternoon in this out-of-the-way place we had never heard of. The landscape melted our hearts
and we knew our days of roaming were finally over. A month later, we moved from the cabin into a two-bedroom home on 12 acres of land just down the road. This was our dream: to live in a place where your neighbour lived far enough away they couldn’t hear us play our music so loud they might call the police. We love our music and, to enjoy it to its fullest, the loudness factor has to play a key role. After a couple of years, we ended up living in another trailer. This time, it was a large, 1950’s Airstream with two dogs, and made possible due to the kindness of a fantastic couple, Mel and Sharron Hynes. If it weren’t for their generosity, we would have again been homeless and wondering, what’s next? Mel and Sharon’s new house had yet to be completed, so my boyfriend finished it for them before Christmas, 2009, and we were finally able to move into their former home on one acre of land. We have both — together and separately — traveled extensively but, to live the rest of your life in one place, you have to be in love with your surroundings and at peace with where you are. This is where I am writing this story now: in the den of our home, looking out of one of our many windows, taking in breathtaking scenery and sunshine. We see deer, bears, and many other animals that most urbanites can only see on television or in a zoo. This is my backyard, The Kootenays, picture postcard perfect.

Local economy is diverse enough Dear Editor: Your guess is as good as mine what might have been in Brian Geis’s eggnog on the day he wrote his July 30th editorial. His thought pattern went something like this: in spite of the fact that environmental issues are the hallmark of present day concerns, environmental groups should set aside those matters and turn towards community economic development. He claims we are a raw resource exploited nation and offers sources that lament that (local and regional economies) have “little or no manufacturing”. To prove his point he lists only exported resources, avoids mentioning any manufacturers, and then casts shame on (politicians) as if he had provided proof. He dug so far back into history that he even included fur as an exploited commodity. He ought to have known the only trappers in this valley are those who live in homes with a mouse problem. He ponders why we can’t be more like Europe and have more manufacturing and then condemns the capitalists in our own country while insisting that we have no manufacturing. Well, we don’t have any manufacturing if one disregards Research In Motion, Bombardier, the auto industry, plastics, electronics, Bavin Glass, and Golden Timber Frames, and thousands of others. The Canadian Manufacturing Association has more than 100,000 members coast to coast. Many of those companies employ a lot of people. This seems like quite a large mea-
sure of companies for (local and regional economies) that have, “…little or no manufacturing…”. Now dragged along in to his argument was a splitting exercise on politicians, the one’s he refer to as, “… blind, weak, forgetful, and scared…”, does it escape his memory that Canada has for nearly four decades been annually ranked by the United Nations as one of the best countries in the world in which to live. Given that fact, does not some of the credit go to our political system and the people who enter it or does Brian think that such an achievement was just dumb luck? What is it with journalists that they have a propensity to marinate national success in a vial of evil? This nation provides a constitutional right for a free press and for free speech, but it is expected that a journalist would use their free speech to advance any debate on a serious subject with evidence and reasoned analysis. There is nothing wrong with logic, except when it is scarcely applied. My advice to those environmentalists who Brian thinks should drop their advocacy in favor of promoting community economic development, don’t quit your day job just yet. Among the manufacturers you forgot when writing that we, “have little or no manufacturing” was Kicking Horse Coffee. It is manufactured right here in Invermere and I recommend their coffee to you; it will serve you much better than eggnog and mystery juice when writing editorials. Arnold Malone, Invermere

dventure Radium is offering a wilderness training experience on August 20-21, 2010. Campers will sleep under the stars at the Crook’s Meadow campsite in Kootenay National Park. This camp will be focused on survival skills and fun. Campers will learn essential skills like shelter building, fire craft, camp cookery, finding food, purifying water, animal safety and the basics of navigation. This camp is limited to youth ages 9 to 12 years. Those interested in participating can sign up at the Adventure Radium day program or at the Radium Hot Springs’ municipal office. The fee is $35 per participant. The final selection of applicants may be by lottery as we are limiting numbers to four campers for each leader. Campers will be expected to provide a warm sleeping bag, ground insulating pad, warm clothing and rain gear, flashlight, daypack and personal toiletries.

Movie Review: Date Night Reviewed by KelseyVerboom Date Night is a quirky mix of action and humour with an all-star comedic cast. A blend of slapstick comedy, subtle innuendo, and outrageous action sequences, this movie is a good pick for your own date night. Tax lawyer Phil Foster (Steve Carrel) and his realestate agent wife, Claire Foster (Tina Fey), are grinding through their daily lives in New Jersey as a sensible suburban couple when they decide to break out of their humdrum routine and head to New York for a night out at a fancy restaurant. When they arrive to find no available tables, they decided to ditch their normally prudent selves and steal another couple’s reservation.
Unbeknownst to the Fosters, they’ve pinched the table of the Triplehorns, a criminially-active couple (James Franco and Mila Kunis) who have unknowingly crossed bad-boy mobster Joe Miletto (Ray Liotta). When two leather-jacketed men approach the Fosters on their dinner date, the couple assumes they’ve been busted for tricking the restaurant, and sheepishly follow them to an outside alley. The Fosters quickly recognize the case of mistaken identity gone wrong, but are unable to convince the thugs of their innocence. Threatened with their lives unless they deliver a stolen computer flash drive, the Fosters launch themselves on a mission to prove their innocence by finding the Triplehorns themselves. They enlist the help of shirtless former military
security agent, Grant Holbrooke (Mark Wahlberg) to track down the Triplehorns. Through a series of adrenaline-pumping action sequences, the Fosters manage to surprise each other with their resourcefulness and break out of their ordinary routine. This movie is a fun combination of an action movie and a chick-flick. Any everyday couple will recognize pieces of themselves in the Fosters. Date night is directed by Shawn Levy, who’s previous work includes Night at the Museum and Pink Panther.

Culture Tour to visit five valley locations Submitted by Kate McKenna Pynelogs Cultural Centre If you’re short of things to do this summer, Pynelogs Cultural Centre is involved in some great events coming up that are sure to be a hit. The second annual Columbia Basin Culture Tour, organized by the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance, will take place on August 14th and 15th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The tour is a free, self-guided trip around more than 100 artist’s studios, museums, art galleries and heritage sites. It spans the southwest, northwest, northeast, and southeast basins, from Valemount to Grand Forks and everywhere in between. The culture tour is a great chance to experience local artists, writers, and performers like never before. Tour-goers will have the opportunity to visit many studios and archives that are not usually open to the public, as well as unseen exhibitions and collections. Many sites will feature special demonstrations, group exhibitions and activities. The gallery at Pynelogs, is one of four Invermere locations featured. Other local spots include the Deanna Gaultier Boutique Gallery; Village Arts in downtown Inver-
mere; and Alice Hale’s studio on Westside Road. Paula Cravens’ Crazy Ravens studio in Canal Flats is another must-see stop. Paula’s Avian Alphabet collection was part of Pynelogs’ previous show, and more of her work is on display here until August 22nd. In workshop news, artist Jessica Gowling will be teaching at Pynelogs on Tuesday, August 17th from 1 to 4 p.m. The Bound Page invites participants 11 years and older to make their own notebooks, journals, and sketchbooks by learning book-making techniques, including stitch-bound, perfect bound, cloth-bound, accordion and altered books. Participants will learn to create books using their favourite papers and can keep the books made. They also make great gifts. Each participant will make at least 2 finished books. The cost of the workshop is $40 and includes some supplies; anyone who is interested is encouraged to sign up before hand, as it is likely to fill up quickly. Celebrated artists at the Artym Gallery Submitted by Deanna Berrington The Artym Gallery The Artym Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of works of Min Ma and Pauline Paquin this weekend. The show opens Friday August 13th for an evening reception from 6 to 9 p.m., with Min Ma in attendance and continues until Sunday, August 22nd. Min Ma, an Artym Gallery favourite has created over 20 new paintings for this exhibition. Old and new fans of Min’s work will be sure to find a painting to love in this show. Celebrated for his Western Canadian landscapes, Mr. Ma’s paintings of his homeland China are also very popular, as well as his street scenes, patios and dock paintings. Always experimenting and moving in different directions, Min Ma’s ability to paint varied styles and subjects never ceases to amaze. He will be at the gallery on Friday evening — take this opportunity to meet this gifted artist. Min Ma began his artistic training in China at the highly regarded China Academy of Fine Arts and became a professor of art before moving to Canada in the mid eighties. His captivating works are a study in versatility and creativity; his paintings are never predictable, but always celebrate Mr. Ma’s love of colour and his
ability to recreate subtly shifting light and mood in a way that draws the viewer into his world. “Colour...is the soul of the painting,” he explained. Although unable to make the trip from Quebec, Pauline Paquin has created a lovely exhibition of new paintings especially for the Artym show. In celebration of golfing season, Pauline has created a series of her trademark children playing while playing golf – some of these golfing scenes have unmistakably Western Canadian backgrounds. Paquin has also created several new hockey paintings, some of which might even contain a Flames jersey (unusual, considering she is a Canadiens fan). Pauline is renowned across Canada and the world for her portrayal of the joy and discovery of childhood. She has created postage stamps for UNICEF, illustrated children’s books and there are even puzzles featuring her work. Ms. Paquin captures the charm and whimsy of childhood – the fun, the games and the imagination of children. Her trademark of leaving the faces indistinct encourages the viewer to relate to the painting in their own way. Both Min Ma and Pauline Paquin have been professional artists for decades; this is an exciting opportunity to see a selection of their new, original works this weekend. Regional district briefs Baltac sewer construction agreement extended The regional district chair and chief administrator have signed the extension agreement with Windermere Water and Sewer company to extend the term of the Baltac community sewer construction agreement from July 15th to October 31, 2010. The need for an extension is mostly due to unforeseen ground water conditions on Lake Drive. The sewer collection system will come online prior to the deadline which also includes time for road rehabilitation, landscaping and clean-up. Timber Ridge contract awarded The Timber Ridge interconnection contract has been awarded to B. Wickhorst Contracting for the tendered price of $162,995 (excluding HST). Construction on the new water main is expected to begin September 7th. Timber Ridge utility commission named Mel Gibson, Terri Adair, Richard Smith, Nev Anderson and Bob Piche have been reappointed to the Timber Ridge Utility Advisory Commission for a twoyear term. Historic letters document early Athalmer By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff A collection of historic letters dating back to the 1930s could soon be donated for display at the Pioneer Museum in Invermere. Louise Collier, a descendant of the Peters family who moved to the valley in 1912, has been given a stack of more than 20 letters sent from Athalmer to England. The letters, mostly sent by Louise’s grandmother, Amy Peters to a relative in Somerset, England, date from 1936 to 1965. “I was amazed when I was given the letters,” Louise said. “It brought back a little history and some memories. I am astounded that there is such a good collection.” The letters were given to Louise by her distant cousins Philip and Coleen Herriman, who still live in Somerset, the family’s home town. The Herrimans found the letters when clearing out the family’s old farmhouse in England. They detail the challenges faced by the small farming community during the harsh Canadian winters, food rationing during the Second World War and family events. “There is a lot of talk about weather and crops,
them being a farming family” Louise explained. “Most are Christmas letters sent from my grandmother to Lilian Somers, who we think was her sister in law.” The Peters family arrived in the Columbia Valley in March 1912 to work for John Gibbon, a publicist for Canadian Pacific Railway. Harry and Amy Peters left England with promises of rich, fertile soil and arrived to find barren land and a house without a roof. “It became a fully operational farm,” Louise said. “We lived in a bungalow at the bottom of the property and made hay, milked cows and grew vegetables.” Now the original farm buildings are gone and the land and accompanying house, built in 1972, are up for sale. The last time Louise visited was one year ago with the Herrimans. She and her two other cousins, Margaret Lietzmann and Lynn Davies, both from Vancouver, are the only remaining Canadian descendants of the pioneering family. Louise hopes to donate the collection of letters and photographs to the museum to preserve a piece of the family history in Athalmer. “I think they should stay in the local area now,” she added. “These letters have come full circle back to where they started, it makes sense to keep them here.”

Jumping off the top of Mount Swansea By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff Leaping from the peak of Mount Swansea is not something you have the chance to try every day. But on Saturday August 7th, with the help of local paragliding expert Max Fanderl, I did just that. Max and 45 other pilots were in Invermere to take part in the Lakeside Event, Canada’s longest-running paragliding and hang-gliding meet. And in the run-up to the day, when the offer came from Max to do a tandem jump, I eagerly accepted. A week later I found myself strapping on an oversized backback in the upper parking lot at Mt. Swansea for a brief and breathless hike to the summit. I joined Max, one of the event organizers, Frank Kernick, and a small crowd of pilots, onlookers and ambulance personnel on the southern launch site. Within a couple of minutes Frank had unfurled his glider and was running off the edge. “Nervous?” asked Max. “Nope, I’m ready,” I replied, clambering into my harness. Either down to a lack of self-preservation instinct, or a lack of knowledge, I was entirely calm. “Your job is to lean forwards and keep running,” Max told me. “As we run forward the wing will inflate, I will check it to make sure we are OK to fly and shout if we need to stop.” We lined up, facing south on a gentle slope leading to a plunging drop filled with trees. On the word “Go” we started running, pulled almost to a stop by the glider filling with air, I saw Max glance up and just as we are about to hurtle off the edge he yells “Stop, stop.” The glider had failed to fully inflate, so we went back and reset for round two —
untangling what seemed like hundreds of yards of lines. This time the call to stop did not come and we ran clean off the edge of the mountain. As the trees whisked by below, I craned my neck to watch our launch site shrinking behind me. “It feels so stable,” I called in amazement to Max.We turned towards Invermere and soared above the golf course filled with tiny people. Once we reached the lake I could see boats cutting through the water below my feet and looked towards Chabot Beach, where I had been standing 45 minutes previously We corkscrewed round several times — my favourite part — and before long we were making our approach toward the stretch of grass outside the Lakeside Pub. Max’s longer legs reached the ground before mine and after a second of peddling in the air I was down — and wishing I could go straight back up and do it all over again. A huge thank you to Max Fanderl, Frank Kernick and all those involved in the Lakeside Event. It was one of my best experiences in the valley so far. Local women leaving for TransRockies Run By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff Four fitness enthusiasts from Invermere are heading south of the border to take part in a gruelling, sixday running race across 180 kilometres of the Colorado Rockies. Carolyn Hawes, Kathy Borsato, Liz Vanderkruk and Kristy Altman have been preparing for the TransRockies Run since signing up last October. The ladies will form two teams that will set off from Buena Vista, Colorado, and run for six days — from August 22nd to 27th — reaching altitudes of almost 4,000 metres above sea level. “The reason for doing this is to prove to ourselves that we still have the ability to challenge ourselves while getting extremely fit in the process,” Carolyn explained. “Plus we all prefer trail running and hiking to road running.” Carolyn found the TransRockies website about two and a half years ago and asked her friend Liz Vanderkruk if she wanted to pair up. Liz mentioned the race to Kathy, who in turn told her friend Kristy. When life and work stopped getting in the way, the foursome signed up last fall. “We knew it would be a big commitment,” Kathy

They will run in the women’s 80+ group, which is based on the total age of the pair, although all joke that they should have their own 100+ group to race in. “I like to think we are a bit inspirational,” said Liz, a keen runner who recently took part in the Heart of the Rockies and the Nelson Triathlon. “We are in our fifties, if we can do this anyone can — never say never. Summer Slam car show next weekend
By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff Proud automobile owners will have the chance to showcase custom paint jobs, stereo systems, and interior work at the third annual Summer Slam car show in Windermere. The event, which is hosted by Invermere’s car audio business, Essence of Sound, and sponsored by Real Storage in Windermere, attracts cars, trucks, off-road vehicles, and classic cars. Event organizer and Essence of Sound owner, Joseph Lyons, moved to the valley from Toronto five years ago
with his car audio business, and recognized the need to have an outlet for passionate car owners to display their hard work. “It’s an open show to anybody. We don’t mind what kind of vehicles come,” he said. “It’s really just a fun show. Some of the cars are really, really serious – there is a lot of work involved in some of these cars.” Prizes will be awarded in categories like best female-owned car, most extreme paint, people’s choice, and best of show. One of the most unique categories
will be a sound competition where Mr. Lyons will measure the sound pressure in each vehicle and award top spot to the stereo system with the most robust sound. There will also be a barbeque, raffles, and a 50-50 draw with half the proceeds going to the local food bank. Last year’s show had 45 non-classic and classic cars on display. Mr. Lyons hopes this year will attract even more people looking to show off their vehicles. The show will begin at noon on Saturday, August 21st at the Real Storage in Windermere, 1508 Highways 93/95.

It has come to my attention, after a survey of my four faithful readers, that two believe that in a recent column, I made some disparaging comments about the Springs Golf Course in Radium. For the first time in six years of writing this column, I apparently need to clarify my comments, which were: “Personally, I learned that the sand is a bit thin in the traps on holes 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, and 9. It’s a little better on holes 11, 12, 13, and 16, 17 and 18. Not that I was in the sand a lot, but I was in the sand too much.” This paragraph was meant to convey to my readers that I spent too much of the day playing from the sand traps. As the day progressed, I got a bit better at doing so. It seems that two of my readers thought I was claiming the sand traps were in poor condition. In rebuttal, it seems like I need to extend a challenge of sorts to Marko. So here is what I suggest: Marko and I play a gentlemanly round of golf at a course of his choosing. Based upon our handicaps, we will determine a winner of the round who will then choose what the loser will have to do. In my case, if I win, I will have Marko donate $100 to the 2011 DTSS golf team. Supporting amateur sports provides a very rewarding feeling, as Marko already knows. Marko, I will be reading the RCMP report each week waiting for a reply. Meteors light up the valley’s skies By Kate Irwin Pioneer Staff Amateur astronomers across the valley are enjoying a spectacular nighttime display this month from the annual Perseids Meteor Shower. Meteors have been lighting up the night Arnör Larson sky above the valley since the beginning of August, with astral activity peaking between the 12th and the 14th and continuing until around August 22nd. The shower — which happens each year at around this time — is caused when the Earth passes through debris left by the Swift-Tuttle comet. “It is one of the more regular and larger showers,” said Wildsight’s Arnör Larson, a keen astrophotographer. “And because it is in the warmer summer months
you can stretch out on a blanket, maybe find someone to snuggle up to, and really enjoy it.” The Perseids shower is so named because the point in the sky where the meteors appear to originate, called the radiant, lies in the Perseus constellation. When Earth passes through the area, tiny specks of dust, rock and ice — which remain behind from the Swift-Tuttle comet’s last trip past Earth in 1992 — collide with the atmosphere. As the particles enter the atmosphere, friction causes them to burn, creating a streak of light as they fly through the sky. “Sometimes, if you’re really observant, you can see up to 100 of them in an hour,” Mr. Larson added. “What’s important to mention is that you don’t need any special equipment, no binoculars or telescope, just a keen set of eyes.” The best way to watch the meteor shower is to get out of any built up area to avoid light pollution, which makes observing the night sky much more challenging. Find a spot where you have a clear view of as much of the sky as possible and look towards the north east where the radiant of the shower lies.
When it gets dark you should start to see infrequent meteors passing across the sky, increasing in numbers as the night continues. “The showers are always a bit more after midnight,” Mr. Larson explained. “As the radiant rises higher and higher in the sky expect to see more and more meteors.” The optimum time for observing the showers is early in the morning, between midnight and five a.m. With the new moon falling on August 11th this year’s meteors should be easy to observe, provided there is not too much cloud coverage. With a camera capable of long exposure, in combination with a tripod, photographs can be taken of the meteors as they pass overhead. “The good thing about this particular year is that there will be hardly any moon at the peak of the shower,” Mr. Larson said. “Because it is only going to be a couple of days old at the time the moon’s light shouldn’t interfere much with watching meteors.” If you take any interesting photographs of the Perseids Meteor Shower, please e-mail them to us at, info@ cv-pioneer.com.

Local pilot top female glider in Canada
By Kelsey Verboom Pioneer Staff Evelyne Craig is as much at home in the skies as she is on the ground. She’s spent the last 11 gliding seasons sharpening her soaring skills and is now the top-ranked female glider pilot in Canada. She participates annually in the Online Contest, a national system that ranks pilots based on the flight information they provide. In 2009, she was ranked 10th out of 264 pilots, and she is currently in the 12th position for 2010. Evelyne, 69, likes participating in the Online Contest because it doesn’t differentiate between pilot gender – it’s purely about gliding. “It’s one of the only sports where men and women are equal. I find that quite special,” she said. After retiring from teaching in 1999, Evelyne spent two weeks earning her glider’s license and began
flying. She purchased her own glider during her third season of soaring to have more opportunities to be in the sky. “I like the challenge of gliding,” she said. “Soaring is both a science and an art. The science is there because you have to understand the thermals – where they are and how to fly using them – but if you don’t have the skill to do that with certain finesse, you just don’t go very far. “For me that’s the challenge: what can I do, and what new places can I go that I haven’t gone before?” Evelyne has made it to the United States border in her glider, and her longest flight was around 650 kilometres, but one of her favourite places to fly is on the east side of the Kootenay River near Mount Assiniboine. The scenery from the window of a glider is “unbelievable from that viewpoint, just unbelievable,” she said.
Being alone in the sky with only the sound of air rushing over the wings is one of the best aspects of gliding, Evelyne said. “The thrill of getting into a really solid thermal and moving up like an elevator – defying gravity – it’s an astounding feeling. But it’s the peaceful moments Evelyne enjoys most about soaring. “I love that quiet time when you’re flying home down the middle of the valley. The light is changing and everything is calm. It’s a very relaxed, gentle part of the flight.” Evelyne is a member of the Canadian Rockies Soaring Club in Invermere, which is a particularly great club to belong to, she said. “Here it’s a very friendly atmosphere.” If people have any inkling to try gliding, they should take the leap, Evelyne said. “They should go for a ride and see if they enjoy it and know that if it’s something they truly enjoy, this is a great place to do it.”

August 13, 2010 Submitted by Anne Picton Windermere Community Association The Windermere Community Association’s plans for the Fall Fair and Scarecrow Festival are in full swing. September 11 is the day to mark on your calendar. Entry is still $3.00 for adults, $4 for kids six to 16 years, and children under six are free. A few changes from previous years include the following:
• Everyone on entry will be given a free draw ticket, and prizes will be drawn at 1 and 3 p.m. — and you have to be there to collect your prize; • Windermere Fall Fair t-shirts will be sold at the information booth throughout the day while quantities last; • A new scavenger hunt will be in place for all ages; • This year’s Fair will end at 4 p.m., and food service will be cut off at 3 p.m., except for snacks.

The power of love Pastor Scott Peterson Valley Christian Assembly If you know me, you probably know that I like to be clean. That’s not to say that I won’t get down and dirty with the best of ‘em, when it’s time to dig in the dirt and get a job done. However, I love to get cleaned up when “grimy time” is over, and stay that way if possible. Years ago when my boys were young, we decided to move house. We used a large moving truck to help transport all of the boxes and furniture, but when we were done we realized that something was missing. Shortly before this my in-laws had purchased a toy drum set for my older son, who was only around 2 years old at the time. I don’t know why grandparents insist on giving loud, obnoxious toys to their grandchildren — possibly to annoy us parents as some sort of cynical pay-back! At any rate, my son loved his red drum set, but alas, it was missing after the move. We searched around but could not find it anywhere, until finally we realized that it might have been left in the cab of the truck, which was cleaned out before it was returned. Utilizing my best deductive rea-
soning, I surmised that the drum set could very well have been thrown away into the convenience store dumpster, where the truck had been returned. Now we revisit my love for cleanliness — a state not easily maintained for those who find themselves dumpster diving! However, out of love for my son, I searched the garbage. There, amongst a stench of repugnant refuse and a barrage of bacteria, I found his little drum set. You see, when genuine love is a motivating factor, we will go to great lengths in order to help somebody. This is exactly what God did for us. John 3:16 tells us “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son (to give his life on the cross), that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” Jesus was willing to do the dirty work for us, and is ready to pick you up out of the mire that you are in, if only you will allow him to. We can receive salvation, forgiveness, and the promise of eternal life by believing that he is God’s son, and receiving him as the Lord of our life. It is the most important decision we will ever make, and when we do, we can understand the power of God’s love. It doesn’t matter what you have done or where you have been, God still loves you. The love of God is defined from the Greek as “agape”, which means unconditional and sacrificial. Love is not a feeling, an emotion, a physical sensation, or an infatuation. Love is a decision, accompanied by action and commitment. Have you experienced the power of real love in your life? I hope that you will.
