Valley bus service runaway success

By Sally Waddington Pioneer Staff The Columbia Valley Transit System is a roaring success, the three organizations involved say.

Launched in February, the bus links Canal Flats, Fairmont Hot Springs, Windermere, Edgewater and Radium Hot Springs with Invermere.

In March, the operator, Olympus Stage Lines, reported 140 users for the month. In September, the service reached its current peak of 567 users.

“Between August and September, ridership increased by 20 percent,” said Pat Cope, chair of the Columbia Valley Transportation Action Committee.

Sonya Smith, the president of Olympus Stage Lines, said she is “surprised and impressed” with the system’s popularity.

“Usually when a service starts up, the statistics are very low, whereas here the numbers have been maintained and in fact continue to grow,” she said.

Shannon Moskal, deputy manager of administration at the Regional District of East Kootenay, explained that the transit system is provided by a partnership between BC Transit and the regional district, after a decade of campaigning by the Columbia Valley Transportation Action Committee.

In 2005, Olympus approached BC Transit to operate the Health Connections system between Golden and Cranbrook, explained Steve Segal, custom program coordinator for BC Transit.

“We then negotiated directly with Olympus for operation of the Columbia Valley system,” he said.

Now, “The public transit system offers our residents safe, affordable, environmentally friendly, wheelchair-accessible transportation throughout the year,”

Pat Cope said.

One rider gave a host of reasons to catch the bus.

“I do own a vehicle but I take the bus when I can for some important reasons,” said Marion Garden, who catches the bus between her home in Canal Flats and work in Fairmont. “It’s dirt cheap; it’s green; it’s easy; I can meet my neighbours; and the three regular bus drivers are great.”

Sonya Smith agreed that an environmental conscience has many people hopping on the bus.

“Environmental concerns and gas prices are spurring people to look at alternative modes of transport,” she said. “Traditionally in rural areas it is more difficult to find those alternatives and the fact that the Columbia Valley can provide that is great.”

There is still room for improvement.

“An expansion would be great,” said Ms. Smith.

“The service is working well for people in Fairmont and Canal Flats, but not as well for those in Radium.

One bus can’t be in both places at the same time.”

Shannon Moskal said the regional district is listening to suggestions.

“The transit service is regularly monitored, with requests incorporated whenever possible,” she said.

“We value the public’s input and as the transit system evolves we will consider all options to ensure it continues to meet the needs of the Columbia Valley.”

Kicking Horse decision on back burner

By Elinor Florence Pioneer Staff A decision regarding Kicking Horse Coffee’s application to open a storage facility in Windermere has been deferred once again.

Directors at the Regional District of East Kootenay board meeting decided to seek further advice from their planning department regarding the controversial rezoning of a five-acre parcel of land on the corner of the highway and North Street from Rural Residential to Light Industrial.

Even the four directors from the Columbia Valley were split on the issue, with two speaking in favour and two against the rezoning amendment.

Area G Director Klara Trescher said she came away from the second October 20th public hearing feeling that most people were in support. “My only issue is the building itself, which can now be addressed through the Official Community Plan,” she said.

She added that roasting will not take place at the site, and that trucking will not be a concern.

“Having a coffee shop and day care would be excel-

lent for the community of Windermere,” she said.

Invermere mayor Mark Shmigelsky also supported the rezoning. “This company has a great track record. The majority of people in Windermere do support it,” he said.

However, Area F Director Lillian Rose, who presided over the public hearing, said that she cannot support the rezoning because it doesn’t conform with the community’s new Official Community Plan.

On November 1st, at about 4:17 a.m., RCMP were dispatched to a domestic assault in Windermere.

Police spoke with those present at the scene, and subsequently arrested a 45-year-old Calgary man for Assault, Uttering Threats and Mischief in relation to Private Property.

The man was taken into police custody and later released on a Promise to Appear and an Undertaking to appear in court February 23rd, 2009 at 10 a.m. in Invermere.

Rock thrown through Bliss window On November 8th, the RCMP was dispatched to a mischief complaint. Sometime between 5 p.m., on the 7th and 7:45 a.m. on the 8th, someone threw a rock through one of the windows at the Bliss Beauty hair salon. A window and a blind were broken. Anyone with information on this crime is asked to contact the RCMP at 250-342-9292 or Crimestoppers at 1800-222-8477 (TIPS).

Truck driver had no licence On November 8th, while patrolling west on Laurier Street in Invermere, a member of the RCMP saw a red Dodge Ram quickly change lanes and increase in speed to pass the vehicle that was in front of it.

The vehicle quickly accelerated, passing the car in the right lane, and then immediately changed lanes quickly without signalling.

The officer stopped the vehicle at Panorama Drive and Laurier Street and noted that the vehicle had no insurance.

The driver of the truck, a 25-year-old New Brunswick man, told police “he was doing a coffee run” and that the truck was not his.

The officer also observed a open beer in the vehicle’s drink holder. The man admitted to the RCMP that he had marijuana in his pocket.

The officer then arrested him for Possession of a Controlled Substance. Search incidental to arrest did not turn up any more contraband.

The man’s driver’s license was examined and noted to be expired. The driver was charged with no Driver’s Licence and No Insurance.

He was not charged with the drug offence due to the small quantity (less than one gram).

Teen drivers racing their vehicles On November 7th at 8:56 p.m., RCMP received a call about two erratic drivers on 13th Avenue, Invermere.

A witness told police that a yellow Pontiac Sunfire and a dark minivan were racing.

The two vehicles “blew” through a stop sign on 14th Street and 15th Avenue while heading east on 14th Street. The witness also saw the minivan passing the Sunfire through that intersection.

The vehicles then “ran” the stop sign at 14th Street and 13th Avenue, made a left turn and headed north on 13th Avenue.

RCMP located both vehicle and drivers, who admitted they were driving without consideration. Both drivers (aged 17) were charged under the Motor Vehicle Act for driving without consideration.

Both drivers had clean driving records and apologized for their wrongdoing. The person who called the RCMP was notified, and satisfied with the outcome.

This said, the only reason for leniency in this case was the fact that both drivers admitted responsibility, had no prior driving infractions and there was no indication that there were third parties put at risk.

Had any of the factors been different, RCMP would have considered using the “street racing provisions” of the Motor Vehicle Act, and impounded their vehicles for 30 days.

Fairmont home broken into RCMP are investigating a break-in that occurred sometime between November 1st and 8th, 2008.The owner of a vacation home on Fairmont Resort Road in Fairmont had a friend last check on the property on November 1st.

Police located the point of entry, but are not releasing further details at this time so as not to interfere with the investigation. Anyone with information on this crime is asked to contact the RCMP at 250-3429292 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

Best wishes to Klara Trescher

Accolades for all three retiring regional directors are well-deserved, but I would like to make special mention of Klara Trescher, a Brisco rancher who has served for 12 years as Area G representative.

Klara isn’t one to grandstand or make jokes, and she doesn’t speak unless she has something to add to the discussion. An independent thinker, she has served her community wisely and well.

She was a great supporter of bringing broadband to the valley, seeing this as a means to connect people in her constituency with the wider world. Unfortunately the proposal was defeated by referendum.

Among her many achievements, she spearheaded the Official Community Plan for Area G; and worked towards creating the Old Coach Trail from Radium to Invermere, now under construction. We expect she will continue her volunteer work, as well as spend time with her husband Siegfried.

With her immigrant spirit, her work ethic, her love of community and her intelligence, she is a role model for all women. Best wishes, Klara Trescher.

Invermere mayor supports conservation fund Dear Editor: I would like to take this opportunity to provide my full support for the Columbia Valley Conservation Fund. I am extremely proud of the fact that the whole Columbia Valley (Area F, Area G, Radium, Invermere and Canal Flats) has been able to come together to provide this incredible opportunity to the citizens of the valley.

We are very fortunate to be able to live in an area that has the Columbia Wetlands, Lake Windermere and the Hoodoos/Hofert Conservation area, as well as many other special places, to call home.

The local conservation fund will provide support for conservation projects from Canal Flats to Spillimacheen to help ensure that these natural features and our quality of life, that we currently enjoy, will be there for our kids and our grandkids.

I have heard from some people who have already advance-voted that they were confused by the referendum question. Please don’t let the complicated question deter you.

Regardless of assessment value of your property, you will contribute the same amount to the fund. If, for example, you own a property that is assessed at $200,000, or a property that is assessed at

$600,000, your parcel tax will be the same, around $20/year.

This fund has also been given a sunset clause, meaning it will expire in nine years. This will allow the fund to prove how valuable it is and how much can be done to ensure that the quality of life that we enjoy today will be there for the future.

Please take this unique and important opportunity to vote during the upcoming Local Government Elections and support the Local Conservation Fund.

‘I voted for Barack Obama’

By Brian Geis Pioneer Editor For American ex-patriates living abroad, the Bush years were difficult to endure. Especially if your slow, midwestern drawl betrays your Hoosier roots the moment you begin to speak.

Under the Bush administration, America’s standing in the world diminished. In Canada, people’s generally low opinion of America was dragged even lower by President Bush’s disastrous economic and foreign policy.

As an American in Canada, I was too often the reluctant ambassador forced to endure a contemptuous, anti-American rant as if I was part of the problem.

As if.

My Canuck wife is even more critical than the average Canadian and holds me partially responsible – based solely on my American citizenship – for “the whole world going to hell in a handbasket.”

In this year’s election, Barack Obama was the only candidate I thought could change all that, restore America’s standing in the world and mute the criticism from abroad. It all seemed like a pipe dream then. Even the black vote was going for Hillary Clinton.

But, when Obama won the Iowa Caucus, I and many others began to believe this young, first-term Senator, the poor son of a black man from Kenya and a white woman from Kansas, who was the polar opposite of George Bush, could become America’s first black president and change the world.

In a two-party system, it usually feels like voting for the lesser of two evils.

But here was a candidate I could finally call “my president.” I remembered his speech, “The Audacity of Hope,” from the 2004 Democratic National Convention.

“My parents,” he said, “shared not only an improbable love, they shared an abiding faith in the possibilities of this nation. They would give me an African name, Barack, or ‘blessed,’ believing that in a tolerant America your name is no barrier to success.”

I campaigned hard for Obama, mostly around Invermere and at home.

My wife adores the Clintons and officially endorsed Hillary early on.

We were both shocked and numb for days after Obama beat Hillary for the Democratic nomination. We had to let that sink in. Hillary Clinton was enormously popular, well-qualified for and deserving of the nomination.

I thought, this could be my year.

This could be the year I emotionally invest myself in a campaign that doesn’t end in disappointment and disillusion.

The election season was a wild ride that tied John McCain’s fate to George Bush’s failed policies and tarnished legacy. We treated ourselves to beer on debate nights and watched the gifted and unflappable orator lift the veil on the emptiness of Republican politics and rally the world around his message of hope and change.

I voted by absentee ballot in my old precinct on the near-west side of Raleigh, North Carolina, and helped turn a swing state blue for the first time in as long as anyone can remember.

Republicans have carried the state in nine of the last 10 presidential elections, usually by comfortable margins.

Bush won it by a 13-point margin in 2000 and a 12-point margin in 2004.

The excitement on election night was palpable and I watched the returns with glee. After the Iowa Caucus, I never lost confidence in Obama, even when McCain was leading in the polls.

In the first words of his victory speech, president-elect Obama spoke directly to disillusioned Americans and America’s critics around the world, delivering the only defense of America that should ever be necessary.

“If there is anyone out there,” he began, “who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.”

Judging from the spontaneous celebrations that broke out around the world, the world approved.

“Finally,” my wife conceded, “your country has done something you can be proud of.”

I hope the rest of Canada agrees.

“This is not about the company, this is about the plan,” she said. “We just adopted the plan and already we are talking about changing the zoning.

They may be wonderful people, but the zoning is inappropriate.”

She explained that when the proposal first came up two years ago, Kicking Horse owners were told that they would have to do some public relations work to sell the concept to the community.

She said they failed to do the necessary work, and then “were blown out of the water by the opposition” that was received at the first public hearing.

Canal Flats director Ute Juras agreed with Ms. Rose, based on the zoning. “I agree that the company has done wonderful things for the Windermere Valley, but based on the Light Industrial rezoning, then I cannot support this,” she said.

Manager of Planning Andrew McLeod then explained that the proposed Light Industrial zoning, with a restrictive covenant held by the regional district, would limit the potential uses of the site.

He told directors that it is easier to create a Light Industrial zone and restrict uses, rather than rezone the property for Commercial use and add allowed uses.

As for creating a new zone, “we already have 40 zones in the Upper Columbia Valley bylaw,” he said.

Mr. McLeod also attended the recent public hearing. “Of those speaking from the community, it was fairly evenly split,” he said.

At this point, Director Rose spoke up again regarding the community’s support.

“It was not a 50-50 split,” she said, referring to letters submitted that showed 56 were in favour, and 134 against. She said many of the people who spoke in suppport of Kicking Horse were staff and friends.

“I resented the preaching that went on against the citizens of Windermere, basically admonishing them for expressing their concerns,” she said.

Finally, Director Norman Walter of Area E proposed that the planners look into creating a site-specific zone for the Kicking Horse property.

Director Jim Ogilvie of Kimberley suggested bringing the matter to another meeting.

Hellboy is by far the most interesting superhero on screen so far. He may be red, have a tail and fileddown horns, but ironically, he is far from devil-like.

He enjoys a beer and a cigar in any situation, so what’s not to love? This comedy-action-adventurefantasy movie gets the thumbs-up!

Gerry Taft: young, energetic and eager for the mayor’s chair

By Sally Waddington Pioneer Staff Gerry Taft wants his constituents to know that he may be just 26, but he has six more years of experience on council than his competitor.

“Despite my young age, I have a firm understanding of the issues and a true commitment to the community,” he said during an in-depth interview just days before the November 15th election.

“In the last six years I have been successful in moving forward many different aspects of the community,” he said.

“I have been directly involved since the day I returned to Invermere from college.”

Born in 1982 and raised in Invermere, he graduated from high school in 2000.

He spent two years studying hotel and restaurant management at Thompson River University in Kamloops, before returning to Invermere in the summer of 2002.

That same year he started his first café, the Secret Sausage Conspiracy, and was elected to council. Two years later, he opened Gerry’s Gelati at its current location.

His father Ray owns The Book Cellar, a used book store in Invermere right across the street from Gerry’s Gelati. His mother Terry works part-time for B.J.S. Accounting Services in Invermere, while also looking after her son’s bookkeeping. Sister Shari, 22, now works at Gerry’s Gelati, too.

Asked what is the biggest issue facing Invermere, Mr. Taft responded with one word: planning.

“Specifically, that means planning for future land uses and development, environmental protection and enhancement, infrastructure renewal, the financial health of the town, economic diversification, and affordable housing,” he said.

As for the issue that many others consider of primary importance, Mr. Taft had this to say: “I believe that the majority of people are opposed to the current proposal for Jumbo and I am comfort-

tail and I would be supportive of caps on the number of boats allowed on the lake, and potentially the size and type of engines,” he said.

About Lot 4616, the parcel at the south end of Invermere currently under consideration for removal from the Agricultural Land Reserve to enable development, his position is unchanged.

“Personally, I would like to see any potential economic development on the property focused on uses like a campground or agriculture, rather than highdensity residential development,” he said.

Mr. Taft wants to ensure that extra funding the District of Invermere receives from the new hotel room tax is distributed fairly.

“The reason we are getting the hotel tax revenue is because Panorama beds have been allocated to Invermere,” he said. “That means the money has to be shared and benefit all three stakeholders: Invermere, Panorama and Area F.” Projects like a trail system between Invermere, Panorama and Radium Hot Springs, the upgrade of Kinsmen Beach, and increased shuttle services to Panorama would meet the criteria, he added.

Regarding Invermere’s neighbours to the east, Mr. Taft has a firm stance.

“I am personally not in support of Windermere incorporating,” he said. “On its own, Windermere doesn’t meet the true definition of a town or village.”

Barry Brown-John: a developer with a belief in sustainability

By Sally Waddington Pioneer Staff Barry Brown-John says he is a developer with a difference.

At Invermere’s All Candidates Forum last week, his competitor refuted Mr. Brown-John’s message – and now he has a response.

“It was a cheap shot that doesn’t speak of integrity at all,” he said during an interview this week.

“I am sad that his remark exposed his apparent negative opinion of developers at large.

“My response would be: how many developers have built a housing project designed for and priced for working people?”

He is referring to Westside Park, the 13.5-acre south-side subdivision that his company Rocky Mountain Land developed in 2004.

The project was the culmination of 20 years’ experience as a realtor, then developer in Invermere. He moved to the Columbia Valley in 1966, while working as a crane operator. He started working at Windermere Realty in 1988 then bought the company in 1991. He purchased Rocky Mountain Realty in 1995. Last year he sold it but retained a position as managing broker.

He is the chair of the British Columbia Real Estate Foundation, which since his involvement has allotted funding to the East Kootenay Conservation Program, Invermere’s Housing Affordability Study and Columbia River Greenways Alliance.

Mr. Brown-John is unapologetic about his connections to development.

“Developers are part of the economic fabric of the community,” he said. “They are the ones who take risks and put up the dollars.”

Sustainability is his watchword for the election.

“If we are not becoming environmentally sustainable now, we won’t be economically sustainable in the future.”

As such, he feels water is the most important issue facing Invermere.

“Water is our biggest issue and it stopped develop-

Photo by Sally Waddington ment dead here for a while. The first aspect is the lake, which is highly important. The second is the water we use to survive.”

He has ideas to build alternative waste water storage for secondary usage in the district, and wells to catch water that falls in the wetter months.

To protect Lake Windermere, he would follow the soon-to-be-released study by the Lake Windermere Project.

“I would like to take the recommendations and bring in others with experience to look at what is socially and politically possible to do,” he said.

As for more severe restrictions of the lake, he had this to say: “People talk about major change to the lake but incrementally is the best way to do it and it’s the most people can handle. People often ask for a major change but if you give it to them they tend to rebel.”

The incorporation of Windermere into the District of Invermere is also a key topic.

“I would like to go to the table with all of the relevant parties and look at incorporation. A single municipality across the entire north end of the lake would increase the tax base and in our dealings with Victoria we would be much more recognized,” he said.

Mr. Brown-John would like to see a referendum on Jumbo Glacier Resort.

“Although I don’t necessarily believe in referendums in principle, in this instance every community from Canal Flats to Spillimacheen should get to vote in the outcome.

“We all have our personal opinions but if I am representing the populace then I would like to have a clear statement. If the decision was made at a regional district level, I would be uncomfortable voting yes for Jumbo,” he added.

The new hotel tax funds should be used on Invermere’s downtown, he said.

“It didn’t move quite as quickly as I would have liked, but it is a celebration all the same and should be used for downtown beautification.”

And he would be happy to see high-end development on Lot 4616.

“You can never have too much parkland. But if it is used for development, I think it should be higher end development and some of the income made should be moved into the Housing Authority to build affordable housing elsewhere.”

That said, he feels public consultation should decide the use of the land, confirming the leadership method he says he will use.

“If the community entrusts me with the position, I would do my best to satisfy the greatest number of constituents,” he concluded.

Conservation tax would be $20 for everyone

By Sally Waddington Pioneer Staff At the ballot boxes tomorrow, Columbia Valley residents will also be asked a referendum question on a new tax for a Local Conservation Fund.

The question suggests that the tax will be based

on property assessment, however the Regional District of East Kootenay’s Chief Financial Officer Shawn Tomlin said that was simply to get around tricky legislation.

“The Local Government Act restricts the way a taxation limit can be set in a bylaw; it cannot state ‘$20 per parcel,’” he said.

“The tax will be the same for all properties and will not be dependent on individual property assessment,” he reassured voters.

“The bylaw does state that the funds are to be collected by a parcel tax, which means that all properties will be charged the same amount,” he added.

The vote must pass valley-wide to take effect.

Columbia Lake access debated at Area F candidates’ forum

By Cayla Gabruck Pioneer Staff Two candidates for Area F faced off at a forum last Wednesday, and the discussion quickly heated up when one candidate’s potential conflict of interest was questioned.

Following a question regarding allowing public access on the north and east sides of Columbia Lake, current Area F director Lillian Rose said she does not support the construction of a day use area, since the proposed land contains a number of archeological sites, including burial grounds of the Ktunaxa First Nation.

Her answer was met with a comment from a woman in the audience, questioning her loyalty to the residents of Area F. “I have had phone calls who have told me this issue was going to be brought up, that it’s going to be an issue of race because I am Ktunaxa,” Ms. Rose replied. “And like I said, I make no apologies.”

The questioner responded: “Excuse me – you’re making this about race, and I am not doing that. I am asking you: are some of your decisions being made because you are a part of the Ktunaxa band, or are you representing Area F?” ©2008 NIGEL FINNEY

“Area F,” Ms. Rose replied, “which the residents of Akisqnuk are part of.”

The crusade for public access to the north and east sides of Columbia Lake

by Fairmont residents has been ongoing for some time. Currently the Fairmont Hot Springs Official Community Plan does support the idea of a day use area on Columbia Lake, but so far no construction has taken place.

“When it comes to accessing, it has been a bit of an issue and I know that people in Fairmont are demanding they should have lake access,” Ms. Rose said.

“Rather than demanding recreation use, we should take advantage of what that particular landscape has to offer.”

But Ms. Booth expressed a different opinion.

“I have been a long-time supporter of a day use area on the east side of Columbia Lake,” Ms. Booth said.

She then went on to say that presently the area was not being maintained, but instead being ruined by people on all-terrain vehicles.

“Right now it is actually being destroyed, as opposed to being maintained,” she said. “The people should have access to it, and I do think there is a solution to get there someday.”

The next question came from retired teacher Anne Picton. She asked the candidates what they see as the most critical issue facing the area, and how they plan to address it.

Both candidates agreed that the answer to that question is governance.

“We, as a rural area, are at a disadvantage in a number of ways from a municipality or an incorporated area,” Ms. Rose said. “We are not able to access some of the funds for infrastructure, which is one of the reasons we are struggling with sewer and water servicing on this side of the lake and in other areas.”

Ms. Booth said a sewer and water study needs to be completed and its results, including public input, revealed before any action is taken.

“You’re masters of your own destiny, but at what cost?” she said.

The proposed construction of Jumbo Glacier Resort was also introduced.

“I do not want to taint the process by pre-judging it, should I find myself chairing a public hearing,” Ms. Booth said, although she did say if the time comes, she will vote with the majority.

“Bottom line – Jumbo is not on the table today; it may or may not be in the future,” Ms. Booth said. “There are many other things that I think the residents of Area F can accomplish today and I think it would be a shame if people base their vote on one issue that

is a ‘what if ’ issue.”

“I just want people to be aware that this is not a two-sided debate, that in fact it is three,” Ms. Rose added, referring to ongoing discussions with the Ktunaxa. “It is very complex and I am not about to guess how things will end up, but I do know that people need to be aware that there is more to it that environment versus development.”

The candidates were also asked to comment on Kicking Horse Coffee’s application to rezone land in order to build a packaging facility.

Ms. Rose refused to answer the question, stating that as chair of the public hearing she must remain unbiased. Ms. Booth agreed with her.

The last issue the candidates were queried on was their opinion regarding Lot 48. The property on the east side of Columbia Lake is owned by Fairmont Hot Springs Resort, but there are no plans to develop at this time.

Ms. Booth said that although she doesn’t know the extent of the private negotiations regarding the matter, the working group dealing with Lot 48 is committed to looking for long-term solutions for the cultural and ecological values of the land.

“I think that it’s going to take the people in Area F and in the region to continue to push for the resolution of this issue,” Ms. Rose said. “I see no downside to having Lot 48 become part of a much larger protected area.”

On November 15th, voters in the Columbia Valley will be asked: “Are you in favor of the Regional District of East Kootenay adopting Bylaw No. 2083 to: • Establish the “Columbia Valley Local Conservation Fund Service” within Electoral Areas F and G, the District of Invermere, Village of Radium Hot Springs, and Village of Canal Flats; and, • Annually requisition up to a maximum of $230,000 or the product of $0.055 per $1,000 of taxable assessed value of land and improvements, whichever is greater, to be collected by an annual parcel tax”?

What the RDEK really wants to ask is whether you’re willing to have about $20 of additional property tax put towards a dedicated conservation fund for the Upper Columbia. But the RDEK can’t ask whether you’ll commit $20 because legally, they can only define the total amount of funds that can be collected in a year ($230,000). All parcels will be taxed at the same rate, regardless of assessed value.

The amount is about $20 annually – a small price to pay to help conserve clean water, wildlife and open space from Canal Flats to Spillimacheen.

Canal Flats race centres around communication

By Sally Waddington Pioneer Staff Communication was the hot topic at the All Candidates Forum in Canal Flats on Thursday, November 6th.

The two mayoral candidates, Emile Morin and Bruce Woodbury, and seven of the eight council candidates gathered at the Civic Centre to answer residents’ questions about their platform. Absent was Karl Sterzer, who had a conflicting appointment in Toronto.

Several questions revolved around council’s ability to communicate with its constituents, and incumbent candidate Walter Woodske was the first to admit there have been issues in the last three years.

“Council has done a poor job in the past to respond to people,” he said. “If re-elected, I will be a proponent for better communication with taxpayers.”

Emile Morin referred to the question and answer section of his council notes, available on the Village’s website, and an increase in public information meetings. “My commitment to communication is obvious,” he said.

However, new candidate David McKersie said the

lack of communication is why he decided to run for council.

“The village has fallen to the wayside on what people want,” he said. “Council and mayor have to commit to dealing with concerns.”

Referring to the widening of Burns Avenue legislated in Bylaw 100, a question by Pat Schwarz asked: “Should people have a say in the widening of their own street?”

Gilbert Delorme reassured constituents that he would do things differently.

“I believe residents should be listened to, especially in matters in their own backyard,” he said.

Bruce Woodbury agreed that public information should be increased. “It is crucial council seeks community input prior to making decisions that affect that community,” he said.

In defence of the village, Michael McDonald had this to say: “To the current council’s credit, it is a difficult job. Council is responsible for taking in all of the information they receive. Also, residents have the onus on them to express their opinion.”

Incumbent candidate Tricia Doherty added that full community input isn’t always possible.

“It is not possible for council to hand out a survey on every major issue.

I wish it were,” she said. “As much as I would like to go door-to-door on every decision, most of you wouldn’t like to see me that often.”

Questions also revolved around development in the village. One submitted by email asked, “Do you own a property that may be utilized for subdivision or profit, and do you have any contracts or stand to gain from any development?”

Each candidate listed their real estate possessions. Three of the nine candidates present had an interest in development.

“I am guilty,” said David McKersie.

“I bought a property big enough to subdivide as a way to get my daughter started. But it is currently on hold, because I couldn’t afford to do it after Bylaw 82.”

Gilbert Delorme said, “I am currently subdividing a two-acre property.”

Bruce Woodbury referred to his career. “I am a development consultant, so of course I have an interest in development.

“Post-election, I will not be working with any developers in Canal Flats,” he added.

Candidates were asked to comment on the two lawsuits between the Village of Canal Flats and Painted Ridge.

“Council did what we could to stay out of court,” said Tricia Doherty.

Ute Juras added that the Union of B.C. Municipalities has granted the village funds to appeal the last court decision, because the results will have an effect on municipalities across the province. “I believe it is significant that the grant was approved,” she said.

Emile Morin added: “I find it curious that another lawsuit was placed just prior to the election.”

Gilbert Delorme expressed a desire for the two cases to be resolved.

“As a taxpayer helping to pay the bill, I would like to see this resolved quickly,” he said.

Candidates also spoke on the Conservation Fund, upgrades of the Village’s hockey arena, curling rink and civic centre, and plans to beautify the village.

In summing up, Ute Juras asked residents to think more broadly than the hot topics of the day. “Don’t choose a candidate based on their position on one single issue,” she said.

False. Speculative “hot stocks” and other risky investments probably don’t belong in a retirement portfolio. But GICs and other “safe” investments probably won’t return much after taxes and inflation, putting you at serious risk of outliving your portfolio. If you’re looking to stay ahead of taxes and inflation — and you should be — you’ll need to invest at least a portion of your portfolio in equities. The first home at Eagle Ranch Golf Resort is near completion and, along with another seven homes, is expected to be ready for inhabitants next summer.

But this is no ordinary development: Stone Creek Properties, which owns Eagle Ranch and Silvertip in Canmore, is building homes that will be used by members of the Stone Creek Resort Club.

One-time membership fees start at $175,000. For that members can stay in the homes, worth $2 million to $4 million, for lengths of 15 to 60 days per year.

“The whole idea with the Stone Creek Resort Club is that we want people to experience a resortstyle vacation. It is a new idea – there are not a lot of resort clubs in the world,” said Eagle Ranch’s Shannon Bennett.

During their stay in the architecturally designed,

square log homes, members will have access to concierge services, daily housekeeping, preferred tee times – even a private chef.

“Members have world-class amenities and five-star service at their doorstep for a fraction of the price of owning their own home,” Ms. Bennett said.

Vice-president of community development Greg Varricchio explained the broad vision for Eagle Ranch.

“We will have approximately 66 single family-style homes with about 250 attached homes such as townhouses and apartment condos for a total of between 275 and 335 ‘doors’,” Mr. Varricchio said.

Ground was broken in July, and last week members of Stone Creek Properties and Westcoast Log Homes erected a tree on the roof of the first home.

Mr. Varricchio said the traditional ceremony called a Richtfest was to “celebrate and acknowledge the last main timber going on the roof.”

Information about missing airman brought to light after 64 years

By Elinor Florence Pioneer Publisher Three years ago, I decided to find out the story behind the local men who had lost their lives in the war, whose names appear on our cenotaphs in Invermere and in Canal Flats.

I traced most of them, except for a name on the Invermere Cenotaph that looks like: “P. E. Edwards.”

After the article appeared on November 25th, 2005, Invermere resident Fran Jeffery called to let me know that Peter Charles Edwards lived here for a few years, and that his father was a land surveyor. I included her comments in a brief article on December 2nd, 2005.

The story stopped there – or so I thought.

This week I received an email from Garth Gordon, a lawyer in Kentville, Nova Scotia, who was preparing a Remembrance Day speech for his local Rotary Club about his uncle Peter Edwards.

When he searched the internet he located a copy of my original article, since our Pioneer issues are archived on our website.

Since then he has sent me several messages, and I have reprinted excerpts of them here. *** I was utterly astonished to find your December 2005 article about my uncle Peter Charles Edwards. I do not have a lot of information about Peter but I have his log book, his medals and some personal items that came to me from my grandmother and mother.

I believe Peter lived in your area all his life before he enlisted. My mother Mary was his older sister from my grandmother’s previous marriage. My mother was born in Minneapolis in 1916 but I know nothing of where she lived before she and my grandmother fetched up in Invermere. My grandmother then married a C. M. Edwards (who had a daughter by a previous marriage) and bore a son, Peter, who was my mother’s half-brother.

My impression is that Mr. Edwards was established in your area, but I have no information about him other than my mother’s remark about his math skills. He could multiply long numbers in his head.

My grandmother and Mr. Edwards became es-

tranged at some point. She and my mother moved to Vancouver. Peter apparently stayed with his father.

After living in Vancouver for some time, my grandmother moved to Vancouver Island around 1929. She was married again to a man named Frank Cruikshank and had a son named James (Jock).

I don’t have any information about Peter’s time in Invermere except that he worked in a bank. I have no idea what became of Mr. Edwards, but I surmise that he survived Peter because the condolences from the Government of Canada were addressed to him.

Peter joined the RCAF in 1941. He started flying training near Vancouver in September 1941. He then trained at Fort MacLeod, Alberta. After graduating he instructed at Yorkton, Saskatchewan, from May 1942 to May 1943 when, according to my mother, his requests to be posted overseas were granted.

He ferried a B-25 aircraft to Britain from Quebec, in June 1943. After a number of brief operational training postings he converted to Halifax bombers.

His log book shows that his second flight in a Halifax was a 7.5-hour bombing operation to Berlin on December 29th, 1943 – two days before I was born. After that trip he wrote to my mother that he had looked down on Berlin and seen the fires of Hell.

He joined 77 Squadron (RAF) in February 1944. His log book records three mine-laying sorties and four bombing sorties to Northern France before the last entry for March 15th, 1944 which simply reads “Ops Amiens.

Missing.”

The 77 Squadron history reports that in a little over two years of Halifax operations, approximately 1,300 crew members served in the Squadron. Of those, 577 were killed or missing believed dead and 25 were killed in accidents; 146 became prisoners of war.

Peter was survived by his mother, then Gladys Cruickshank (my grandmother), his sister Mary (my mother), his younger brother Jock, and his nephew (myself ).

The only family in Canada of whom I am aware, are myself (and my wife and two children), and my cousin Colin Cruikshank of Nanaimo and his wife.

Peter’s loss profoundly affected both my grandmother and my mother. My wife and I named our son after him.

Although I never had the opportunity to meet him, my uncle has been an immense presence in our family despite his loss so many years ago.

In 2006 my wife and I went to Amiens to visit his grave at the Longueau British Cemetery. He is one of two

World War Two servicemen buried in this well-kept World War One cemetery – the other 200 or so servicemen are mainly casualties of the battles of the Somme about April 1916. Although Peter was Canadian he was buried as a “British Airman” because he was flying with the RAF. We left a Canadian flag and some personal items at his grave, then placed some earth from our home in Nova Scotia over his grave so he will lie under Canadian soil.

After seeing your article, I phoned Fran Jeffery of Invermere. She knew of Peter through her cousin Kathleen; apparently Peter and Kathleen were very good friends – went horseback riding and the like. Mrs. Jeffery also said that Kathleen never married and that she has passed away.

Mrs. Jeffery confirmed Peter did not work in the bank in Invermere – she knew this because her father was the bank manager in Invermere – she thought he worked in Cranbrook.

I just gave a Remembrance Day talk to our Rotary Club – mostly about my uncle. I was able to use the information from your article and from Mrs. Jeffery.

After 64 years I was truly amazed to find your article, and to speak to Mrs. Jeffery.

I will be turning all of my information about my uncle to his namesake, my son Peter.

I think it will be a very happy Remembrance Day, having learned so much more about my uncle in the past two days and knowing that the folks in his home town still remember him and the others from Invermere who died serving in the Second World War.

The Sacrifice Medal is a new Military Medal introduced by Governor General Michaelle Jean in 2008.

It’s awarded to military personnel, members of the Allied Forces, or Canadian civilians working under the authority of the Canadian Forces, who suffered wounds or death, on or after October 7th, 2001.

Canadians served from August 4th, 1914 to November 11th, 1918 – the day the guns fell silent. This year is the 90th Anniversary of the Armistice of the First World War. November 11th was named Remembrance Day in 1931.

The military awarded wound stripes – small strips of gold braid worn on the left sleeve, dating back to the First World War. The question I ask is: what about World War Two? They wore wound stripes but were no longer able to wear them when the new post-war army was formed in 1947.

What about veterans of Korea?

Cyprus? Bosnia?

It was thoughtless to have a start

date. The Sacrifice Medal excludes our past actions in defence of Canada.

On the 11th hour, 11th day, 11th month . . . In Remembrance, I’ll recall the words: When you go home, tell them of us, and say: For your tomorrow, we gave our today.

For Canada, they gave their freedom all.

And still today in distant lands, men and women answer the call.

Remember two simple words, “THANK YOU” for this freedom.

They sacrifice their life and limbs so that we can live as free Canadians.

I will never break my promise to them; their efforts will never be forgotten or unappreciated.

Their many sacrifices will not go unnoticed.

In respectful remembrance of all those who served and those serving.

Tearful goodbye from three valley directors

By Elinor Florence Pioneer Staff It was an emotional goodbye at last Friday’s meeting of the Regional District of East Kootenay board of directors in Cranbrook, when three of the five Columbia Valley directors made their final farewells.

First was Area G Director Klara Trescher, who is stepping down after 12 years in office. “I know I am going to miss it,” she said. Fellow directors referred to her grace, her dignity and her calm voice of reason as among the attributes they will miss the most.

Mrs. Trescher will be replaced by Gerry Wilkie, who has already won the seat by acclamation.

Then chair Greg Deck, who has served for 18 years – the last six as chair – tried to say goodbye. “When I started, my daughter was in Grade 5. Now she’s finishing law school,” he said, before his voice trailed away.

After a moment he managed to thank the “three constants” in his work – fellow director Jim Ogilvie of Kimberley, Chief Administrative Officer Lee-Ann Crane, and his wife Meaghan, before he was forced to stop.

Fellow directors were lavish in their praise of the outgoing chair. Several told

him he was the best director they had ever worked with, and a couple said he was the best in the province.

Mr. Deck will be replaced as a director by incoming Radium mayor Dee Conklin, who has won the seat by acclamation. Mr. Deck’s replacement as board chair will be announced later.

Finally, it was the turn of Invermere mayor Mark Shmigelsky. He, too, was too choked up to speak, but managed to say: “I want to thank one person – my wife Robin. She has been so supportive over the past 15 years.”

Mr. Shmigelsky has been on the Invermere council for 15 years, mayor for the last six. He will be replaced by either Gerry Taft or Barry Brown-John, both of whom are running for mayor.

Fellow directors praised and thanked Mr. Shmigelsky for his contribution.

“What I’ve appreciated most of all is his sense of humour,” said Greg Deck.

“My sense is that he’s just taking a break to review his options and he will return to the political arena.”

Two other valley directors don’t know yet whether they will be back next month. Area F Director Lillian Rose is running against Wendy Booth of Fairmont; and Ute Juras of Canal Flats is running against seven other candidates for council in her village.

Letter from candidate Mike Thomas To Invermere residents: As an introduction, I moved to Invermere with my family several years ago.

My wife, Kerri-Anne Thomas (neé Banham) grew up in Invermere and now practises law at the MacDonald Thomas law office. We have two children in the local school system.

I have been a professional electrical engineer for almost 20 years, giving me experience in planning, implementing and managing a variety of large projects. Recently my focus has been working with NanoFibre Networks here in the valley.

To be an effective councillor, I believe one must be able to set priorities, assess facts, evaluate District staff recommendations, ask intelligent questions, conduct research when necessary and make decisions in a consistent, fair and open fashion.

This applies to all applications in front of council.

Developers, for example, need to be able to rely on the information provided by the District. Residents, on the other hand, need to know that development

applications are thoroughly reviewed.

If I am elected, you can look forward to a councillor who is well-informed, has a good understanding of the task, considers the various options and makes decisions in the best interest of our community.

I believe that decisions need to be consistent with the vision for our community. We need to understand where we are going and what we want our community to look like in three, five, 10 and 20 years.

I think there is often room to find a more creative solution to a problem and we should not immediately impose a policy to solve an issue.

For example, I recently received my water bill from the District. What I immediately noticed was the graph of our usage.

While this is good, a simple improvement might be to indicate how my family’s usage relates to others.

This addition makes it obvious as to whether my family is part of the solution or part of the problem.

A longer-term solution might be to investigate the use of currently available technology to provide instant feedback on your water usage. How would your water usage change if every time you turned on your sprinklers, a meter on your wall showed your usage in dollars per minute?

I believe when people are presented with viable alternatives and information they will take measures to address the issue.

It was clear from the forum that the health of our lake is important and I certainly agree.

While the number of boats on the lake is a concern, I can’t go as far as advocating a complete ban on motorized boats. Not only would this require costly administration, it would be extremely unpopular with many residents and visitors to the valley.

The health of the lake needs to be addressed by looking at all impacts to the lake. Septic fields, fertilizers, agriculture, general litter and other sources all impact the health of the lake. This problem needs to be addressed with all stakeholders of the lake as the District does not have complete jurisdiction on this issue.

Once again, perhaps there is a more creative approach rather than an administrative one. An approach of education, awareness and encouraging alternative activities can be equally or even more effective.

These are a couple of examples of what I believe to be viable, creative solutions to these problems. Creative thinking is the key, and I believe this approach is far more effective, less controversial and provides a more cost effective solution.

This approach will continue to make Invermere a more desirable place to live and visit.

P ioneer C lassifieds Obituary Myrtle Allison Mitchell of Invermere B.C. passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 8, 2008. She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Corbin (Corky) in January of 2001, her sister Marion Jones (Carl), brothers Gordon – Bud Cleland (Pat), Douglas Cleland, brother-in-law Charles Osterloh and parents Ethel and Howard Cleland.

Allison is fondly remembered and missed by her loving and devoted sister Audrey Osterloh, children Bill (Jeanette) of Red Deer, Doug (Patti) of Vancouver, Billy (Linda) and Ken (Janice) of Invermere.

Nanny is also missed by her beautiful grandchildren - Misty (Dave), Kris (Nic), Tyler, Caitlin, Stephanie (Jason), Reid, Meghan, Chris and special great grandchildren Raya, Bailey and Briggs. Many nieces, nephews and their children will also sorely miss Aunty Al. A heart felt thank you is extended to Aunty Aud for the dedication, care and sisterhood she shared with Mom through her years. We love her deeply.

In her youthful years Allison enjoyed skiing, curling, camping, golf and even hockey. Many playful hours of bridge with the Coys and the Andersons were always cheerfully remembered, as were her many drives and outings with her husband Corky around our beautiful, precious valley.

Allison braved rheumatoid arthritis for 70 years. It was to no one’s surprise, through these many years, Mom continued to demonstrate dignity and grace. Enduring numerous operations, body casts, pins and needles, she always had a smile and forever a twinkle.

Allison was loved by whom she met. Her warmth, kindness and striking beauty will always be remembered. Allison will be dearly missed by all of her extended family and friends.

She very much loved her time spent with them, and had many reflective and humorous memories of occasions that had been shared.

The Mitchell and Rogers’ families would like to thank Dr. Teresa Ross for her care and compassion, as well as the many caregivers who became special companions for Mom in her home. We would like to extend many thanks to the staff members at Columbia House for their gentle care of our Mom and Nanny. Their kind remark “It was our pleasure!” sincerely touched us, as did her smile to them.

Jim Abbott named Parliamentary Secretary Submitted by The Office of MP Jim Abbott The Hon. Jim Abbott Progressive Conservative Member of Parliament for Kootenay Columbia, has been appointed by Prime Minister Stephen Harper to the post of Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Cooperation.

The Prime Minister said as he named Mr. Abbott and 26 other Parliamentary Secretaries on Friday, Nov. 7th: “Serving as a Parliamentary Secretary is a big responsibility, and I have tremendous confidence that this is the right team for the job.”

Mr. Abbott has been deeply involved with international parliamentary associations and has built personal relationships with foreign ambassadors who are resident in Ottawa.

He has also travelled extensively in a voluntary capacity building relationships with officials in other countries.

“I am exceptionally pleased to be asked by the Prime Minister to serve in this position,” he said after his appointment. “I will devote my efforts to serving the Canadian people to the best of my ability.”

Parliamentary Secretaries are responsible for assisting members of the Cabinet with their parliamentary responsibilities. As part of these responsibilities, Parliamentary Secretaries frequently represent their Minister in Parliamentary committees and work closely with Members of Parliament in the House of Commons.

“In a time of global economic instability, it is essential that the government’s legislative responsibilities are managed consistently and competently,” the Prime

Bighorns win second Kootenay Bowl

By Cayla Gabruck Pioneer Staff For the second year in a row, the Columbia Valley Bighorns football team ended their fall season in victory.

The Bighorns blasted the Cranbrook Rams 28-0 in the 12th annual Kootenay Bowl held in Invermere on November 8th.

“The score was a little bit flattering,” said head coach Bruce Marlow.

“Cranbrook did play a hard game, but the Bighorns definitely executed better than they did.”

This was their third time facing off against the Rams, one time walking away with a win, the other with a loss.

“They were ready for our old game, but at the Kootenay Bowl we played a new game,” Coach Marlow said. “They didn’t know what to do.”

That “new game” was made all the more effective by some standout players.

Stefan Trudel of Edgewater shortkicked twice in the game against the

Rams, resulting in 14 points for the Bighorns.

Another notable player was Tyler Nicholas of Windermere, who scored the second and final touchdown of the game.

“We also had great running by Ted Stringer,” Coach Marlow added. “He played his heart out.”

Although not a close game, Coach Marlow said the team kept the intensity level high at all times.

“The most memorable moment was near the end of the game,” he said. “We were standing there with the game in hand, and my players were still willing to do whatever needs to be done – it is hard to put into words.

“I have been coaching for years, and coaching this team – it was a humbling experience.”

The Bighorns ended their season with a four-win, three-loss record.

They will hold their year-end banquet and awards ceremony at Eagle Ranch this Saturday, November 15th at 7:30 p.m.

Old Zone: The Incredible Bulk has the sniffles

By Harold Hazelaar Pioneer Columnist Last week the Wolves played their first game of the season in Canal Flats.

Let me tell you, we were terrific!

It all started when our goalie, The Incredible Bulk, bailed on us due to his annual winter sniffles and cold symptoms. He found us a replacement for the night and we climbed aboard our bus and headed south.

We thought it would be tough with 11 skaters and a goalie, but that was nothing compared to the 20-some guys who showed up for the Flats team to demonstrate their hockey skills for us.

Boy, were they in for a surprise. We played phenomenal hockey. Our passes were crisp, our fore check and back check was tenacious.

Our goaltender was superb. All in all, we have

never played better and the brutally lopsided score was testament to that fact.

In all fairness, it is hard to get into the flow of the game with 20-some players. The Canal Flats group needs to consider expansion to two teams if that type of attendance keeps up, because none of them get enough ice time to make it worthwhile.

Maybe they can put together a full-time squad to play our SilverTips during the day. The 55-and-over group would jump at the chance for some new competition. They like the occasional road trip as well.

This week, reality will set in again as we have our regular goalie back and he will be expecting a similar performance from us. NOT. We save the best for our exhibition games that don’t count for anything. Thanks for the great effort, David Cassidy. You’re a better goalie than you are a singer!

Rockies lose one to the Chase Chiefs

By John Helm Columbia Valley Rockies The Columbia Valley Rockies took to the ice Saturday, November 8th, on a rare one-game weekend against the Chase Chiefs. The visitors came in having lost three straight, including a 2-1 setback vs. Rockies division rival Kimberley a night earlier. The Rockies, on the other hand, came in having won three in a row, sitting a season best five games above .500 at 12 wins, seven losses and one overtime loss.

Columbia Valley fell behind two nothing in the first period but battled back, closing the lead to one.

Battling back was the theme of the night for the Rockies, who looked flat at times in the first two periods.

The game followed a pattern of Columbia Valley cutting Chase’s lead to one, and then Chase reacquiring their two-goal cushion. In fact, the Chiefs had four two-goal leads: 2-0, 3-1, 4-2, and 5-3 in a see-saw game. Finally the Rockies scored two in a row to tie

the game at five. It was a hard-fought, compelling contest that fittingly went to overtime. In the extra frame the visitors took full advantage of a, let’s say “questionable” penalty call, when newcomer Mitch Lutz was sent off for tripping seconds after the whistle at 1:52 of the fourth period.

Chase forward Scott Jackson scored his second of the game finishing off a first-rate give and go on the four on three from Bardarson. The Rockies got goals from Diehl, Spaan, Bjorkman, Sabey and an absolute snipe job from road Captain Brent Mcqueen to tie the contest. Mcqueen flew down the left wing on a two-on-one and ripped a snap shot into the top corner on the short side on Chase goalie Riley Wall.

The Rockies missed injured rear guard Warren Leslie and the situation worsened when Ryan Niddery was ejected in an opening period fight. Brandon Anderson gave up six goals, but had moments of brilliance including a highlight reel glove save in the third.

He stopped 32 shots and is credited with a tie in the overtime loss.

Reid Mitchell wore jersey number 12 instead of his usual number 11 in tribute to his late cousin.

Two years ago to the day of the game, Carly Jones of Invermere was tragically killed in a car accident on her way home from college. The evening featured a moment of silence and a hearty performance from Mitchell and the Rockies. Carly wore jersey number 12 in basketball.

Columbia Valley made a couple of trades this week. The Rockies sent Cody Lund and future considerations to Chase for Mitch Lutz. The 18-year-old Penticton product is a veteran. Lutz has nine points so far this season in 19 games on the Chiefs blueline and had an assist in his Rockie debut. Also Michael Oldfield was sent to the Grand Forks Border Bruins for future consideration.

Columbia Valley are in action at Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena this weekend. The Rockies play host to the dreaded Fernie Ghostriders on Friday, November 14th, before hosting Beaver Valley on Saturday, November 15th. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.

Love others with God’s unconditional love

By Trevor Hagan Lake Windermere Alliance Church What a wonderful feeling it is to meet people from our past who helped us reach milestones in our lives.

I recently had the opportunity to spend some time with a lady who shared the love of Jesus with me when I was 10 years old.

I remember this special lady who told me Bible stories and taught me songs that helped me start my journey of faith.

Recognizing that hindsight is 20/20 vision, I can see now how her love for God was lived out in her love for people . . . me, to be exact!

Throughout those first years of my spiritual journey she exemplified the love of Christ not only to me but also to my family, despite the fact that loving my family presented many challenges. She and others like her proved God’s love to me through their unconditional love and acceptance.

I’m older now and as I look back on those people who loved and cared for me with that supernatural love that comes from a relationship with a God who is

Effusion raises money for families Effusion Art Gallery raised $1,040 in support of the Family Resource Centre in Invermere last Friday.

The evening consisted of a silent auction and jewellery sales by numerous Canadian artists, including talented local artist Leslie RoweIsraelson.

The event was attended by about 60 people, and glass artist and owner Heather Cuell said the Canadian artists were very well-received.

“It was very successful,” Heather said. “The energy level was really positive and we had many comments that people would like to see us do it again in 2009.”

love, I am humbled by the sacrifice and persistence of those dear friends.

I will be forever grateful for their obedience to God’s leading in their lives as they reached out to me and others like me.

Ephesians 5:1-2 challenges its readers to, “Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Imitating God may seem like an unimaginable feat, but if we think back to our childhood and remember those times when we tried to imitate our parents as they went about their daily tasks, or as we look at the toddlers at our feet who are trying to mimic our every move, it doesn’t seem so unimaginable at all.

The challenge is to live a life of love. The example has been set for us in the person of Jesus Christ who loved unconditionally and without prejudice.

Romans 5:8 says, “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

It amazes me that while I was messed up this lady loved me like Jesus did. In essence, she was imitating God by living a life of love! She didn’t ask me to get cleaned up first and then began a relationship with me, she just took me as I was . . just like Jesus does.

Sometimes it is not easy loving those close to us, let alone everyone else! I am living proof that God uses people who are willing to love others. Thanks, Karen!
