How to choose the right floor covering

By Sally Waddington Pioneer Staff An uncovered floor is like a blank canvas. There are countless options, so many choices that it can be overwhelming.

But there are some tips to choosing the right floor covering for your home.

The first question you will probably consider is: carpet or hard surface?

Each has its merits, according to Don Devlin of Fitz Flooring.

“Hard surfaces are popular for new homes in living rooms and other high-traffic areas,” Don said. “Ten years ago people were putting carpet in those places.

Now people are choosing hard surfaces for better air quality and easier maintenance.”

In particular, people are choosing hard surfaces for their great rooms.

“Today’s homes have more of an open concept,” Don said. “Most people want the same flooring continuing throughout, so they might cover the whole main floor with hardwood.”

Choosing a hard surface could be the next question you consider.

“Slate is very popular in the Columbia Valley,” Don said, “as well as wider, more rustic hardwoods.”

If you are flooring a second home – particularly one that could be rented out – Don suggests one floor covering in particular.

“I recommend laminates in second homes for ease of maintenance and scratch resistance,” he said. “For instance, it’s great in Panorama where you might have people trudging through the house in ski boots.”

The environmental movement has also had an impact on the flooring trade.

“Green products are a big push in the market place,” said Don. Engineered hardwoord is gaining popularity over solid hardwood. It uses hardwood on the surface only, and plywood beneath. “So you get more yield out of the tree,” Don explained.

And those looking for an environmentally-sensitive product should not rule out carpet.

“Carpet is becoming more and more recyclable,” Don said. “We just don’t have the facilities in Canada to recycle it yet. But the States has those facilities.”

Stainmaster have also released a new nylon carpet called 6.6, which is made from recyclable fibre.

Carpet has other advantages, too, especially in particular rooms.

It can be quieter and more comfortable, so it’s best suited to bedrooms and staircases.

“Carpet is often used on stairs for its safety,” Don

said. “To put tile on stairs, they have to be quite strong and reinforced. Hardwood can be fiddly and you have to put noses on the edges of each step.”

The price can be a key consideration when choosing between carpet and hard surface.

“Carpet is sometimes chosen when people have budget constraints,” Don said.

Dave Tomalty of Warwick Interiors added that flooring trends for second homes can be very different to the trends you find in the city.

“People aren’t looking for the same texture in their recreational home as in their primary home,” he said.

“Most people are looking for something unique in their second home. So the valley doesn’t follow the trends of the city. The trend is towards more rustic flooring.”

To get around the noise issues with hard surfaces, Dave said many people add an area rug to dampen the sound – especially in rooms with a television or sound system.

“Once they are furnished, 75 percent of hard surface homes have an area rug added,” he said. “It gives colour and cosiness and brings the room together.

“There are still a lot of people who like the feel of carpet under their feet,” he added.

Prepare your cabin for cold weather

By Cayla Gabruck Pioneer Staff As the leaves begin to fall and summer slowly comes to an end, you may be feeling a touch of nostalgia during your last weekend at the summer cottage.

That feeling may soon be replaced with panic, as you rush to close up your cabin before the frost sets in.

Never fear, The Pioneer and a few local experts are happy to remind you of all the little things that you need to accomplish to make sure next summer is just as memorable as this one.

Radium Hot Springs Fire Chief Dave Dixon said that there are a few key things you can do to make sure your cottage is not a fire risk over the winter months.

First and most importantly, check to ensure your smoke detectors are in good working order. That way if there is a problem, a neighbour may hear it go off while you are away.

Next, he suggests unplugging all appliances, in case of lightning strikes or power surges. Then go through your home, including the garage and any sheds, and remove any combustible items such as paint, turpentine and household cleaners, as well as the rags that have been used to soak up those materials.

“You should also drain all the gasoline out of tools

such as mowers and other lawn equipment,” Mr. Dixon added. “Not only are you removing a fire hazard, but it is also good maintenance for your machines.”

Another very important step to take, he said, is to call your insurance agent and make sure that your cottage is still insured and will remain that way over the winter months.

Judy Beck, owner of Valley Solutions, has a few tips of her own to add to your list. Firstly, shut off your water and water heater, and ensure that the thermostat in your home is set at a temperature of about 10 to 12 degrees Celsius. She said reducing your heat will cut down on your energy costs as well.

Next, drain all your water lines, including your hot water tank. This can be done by turning on all taps. Pouring a small amount of plumbing antifreeze down the pipes to mix with the water you are unable to drain is also a good idea.

As far as general clean-up goes, according to some experts, you should cover your furniture with sheets to reduce fading over winter months. Remove all food from your cabinets that could attract pests, and cover your chimney with a screen or door to prevent rodents from entering. Clean out your refrigerator and add baking soda to remove the stale odour.

One of the most important preventative measures

you can take is to ask a friend or neighbour to check on your cottage once a week to ensure that any mishaps, or break-ins, are quickly noticed and do not cause extensive damage to your home away from home.

Dave Read, owner of Valley Hawk Security, also offers house-sitting services. He suggests calling your insurance company to see how frequently your home must be checked to ensure that your home insurance is valid. His company will do home checks in Invermere, Windermere, Panorama, Fairmont and Radium.

Dave added that while you are gone, your home should look as lived in as possible. “A simple way you can do this by hiring someone to come by and remove snow from your walkways,” he said.

Valley Hawk Security will also make arrangements to handle any maintenance problems that may arise. For example, if your furnace fails in the middle of winter, Dave will meet with the heating company and arrange the necessary repairs.
