Historic building up for sale

By Alex Cooper Pioneer Staff The District of Invermere is looking into acquiring the historic Canadian Pacific Railway lodge that is up for sale. The move was spearheaded by councillor Bob Campsall at Tuesday’s council meeting.

“I think if we put our minds to work we can find the funding and find a way to make use of it,” he said. “I see this as a great opportunity. Let’s not lose this one.”

The historic building on Fort Point was built in 1923 and was owned until recently by Ian and Lucy Weir, who have both passed away.

Council discussed purchasing the building, restoring it and moving it to a new location, and directed staff to look at different options available.

“It’s an amazing building when you think of the history behind it,” said Mayor Mark Shmigelsky. “It’s a great opportunity for the whole community to get behind this.”

Daniel Zurgilen, a realtor with Maxwell Realty that is listing the property, said the Weir family is eager to sell and prospective buyers are more interested in the half-acre property than they are in the building.

He isn’t opposed to the building being moved if the district is willing to pay for it.

“It would be neat to maintain it on its present location but it is beyond our means,” said councillor Ray Brydon. “I am interested in moving it to a suitable location.”

The property is listed at $1.29 million.

Councillor Sarah Bennett proposed turning the building into a museum.

“It would be great to incorporate it into a First Nations exhibit,” she said.

Councillor Gerry Taft said he thinks it’s something that the public and the private sector can get behind.

“This is one of very few older buildings in the community,” he said. “There is a great deal of history regarding the railroad that is rarely talked about.”

New laws to protect wetlands

By Elinor Florence Pioneer Staff Power-driven vessels will no longer be allowed on the main channel of the Columbia River wetlands from March 1st to July 15th each year if a proposed set of new federal regulations takes effect this fall.

Under the proposed regulations, during the remainder of the year, motorized vessels can use the main channel, but there will be a complete ban on “recreational towing” including waterskis and devices like wakeboards.

“This is very good news for the people of this riding,” says Kootenay-Columbia MP Jim Abbott.

“Thanks to the dedication and hard work of the Columbia Wetlands Stewardship Partners, these regulations are finally going forward. Everyone was willing to compromise to the benefit of the majority of people in the communities along the wetlands.”

The partnership was formed in June 2007 after a decade of negotiations by government and nongovernment organizations. The province originally tried to put restrictions in place, but after a court case several years ago, it was determined that regulation of the wetlands fell within federal jurisdiction.

The extensive wetlands along the Upper Columbia, 180 kilometres from Fairmont to Donald Station north of Golden, are one of only three in British Columbia recognized as being of international importance. The March 1st to July 15th period covers the sensitive nesting season for birds in the wetlands.

Mr. Abbott said he knows that while the regulations will benefit the overwhelming majority of area residents and visitors, not everyone agrees with them.

“I recognize that there are still some hard feelings about this issue, but nevertheless we found a community-based compromise that satisfies at least 80 percent of the population,” he said.

“Individuals and groups who wish to comment on the proposed regulations have 60 days to do so.”

The proposed regulations were published in the June 28th edition of the Canada Gazette, the official federal newspaper. People have until August 27th to submit comments. At the end of the 60 days, the comments will be reviewed and any necessary

To avoid compromising the band’s economic interests, the applicants recommended that the boundaries of the restricted area be adjusted to exclude the site of the potential marina and boat launch. This adjustment will have a minimal impact on environmental values.

Provincial Member of the Legislative Assembly Norm Macdonald, representing the Columbia RiverRevelstoke riding, commended Jim Abbott on his efforts to make restrictions a priority.

“This is a situation where all levels of government are on board together,” he said. “Jim Abbott said after the last election that he would make this a priority, and he followed through.”

Paul Galbraith of the Columbia River Greenways Alliance, one of the groups that make up the Columbia Wetlands Stewardship Partners, thanked the agencies and local government officials who helped make this new level of protection possible.

“The regulations, which we might not have seen at this point in time without the efforts of MP Jim Abbott, support ecological sustainability and will have minimal impact on fish and wildlife values while providing opportunities for user groups.”

By Staff-Sgt. Doug Pack RCMP Columbia Valley Detachment Over the past week, the RCMP responded to 97 new calls for service.

Domestic dispute ends in arrest

On July 4th, RCMP were called to a report of a domestic assault in Edgewater. Upon arrival the police spoke with one male and one female, the only occupants of the residence.

Police learned that there had been an altercation between the pair, with the woman throwing kitchen items throughout the house. However, upon examination, police noticed that the woman had a cut below her right knee, a bruise under her left eye, blood in her mouth and was complaining that her ribs hurt.

She told the investigators that she had been “beaten up” by her common-law husband. RCMP arrested a 47-year-old Edgewater man for assault.

He was later released on a promise to appear in Invermere Provincial Court on August 19th, 2008. He was also placed on conditions to have no contact with his common-law spouse and to refrain from returning to the residence.

On June 30th, 2008, around 3:30 a.m., RCMP were called to a house in Radium Hot Springs where an intoxicated man was threatening to get a gun “and kill everyone”. At the scene, witnesses directed police to one of the nearby units, where the man was believed to be. Witnesses told police that the man had tried to force his way into a female’s unit and threatened to kill another person who asked what he was doing.

The man, a 28-year-old Radium resident, was called out of the unit and he was confirmed to be very intoxicated. He was arrested and only when his real identity was established the next day was it discovered that he was already on previous assault and weapons charges with conditions not to consume alcohol.

The man was remanded into custody by police and taken to Cranbrook Provincial Court for further hearings on the matter.

Vehicle stolen from clinic

Sometime between June 15th and June 29th, a 1987 Toyota Landcruiser bearing BC plate 397ATP was stolen from the parking lot of the Invermere Veterinary Clinic. The vehicle was uninsured at the

Altercation over kit bags

On July 2nd, two men (aged 48 and 33) were drinking beer in Invermere. The older one told his younger partner to “go get more beer or he’d keep his kit bags,” which he was presently using as a seat.

The younger of the two, not wanting a confrontation, decided to call RCMP instead so we could get his belongings. When our member arrived, he was able to resolve the matter without incident. Oh, yes, the older man was also issued a violation ticket for having open liquor in public.

Theft from cars rising in Fairmont

RCMP are investigating thefts from vehicles in the Fairmont Hot Springs area.

• Overnight on July 3rd, three vehicles were entered and several items stolen from inside. Missing are two sets of golf clubs, two microwaves, a DVD player, an iPod, a satellite radio, bed sheets and cushions.

• Overnight on July 3rd, CDs, GPS and car keys were stolen, but later the GPS and car keys were located inside the vehicle; they were apparently only misplaced.

The only outstanding items yet to be accounted for are CDs, but there is no other information known.

• Overnight on July 5th, a vehicle parked in the lot at Spruce Grove Motel was entered and two jackets, a cell phone and cigarettes were stolen.

Drinkers at James Chabot fined

On June 30th, RCMP were conducting a foot patrol at the James Chabot Beach in Invermere.

When they noticed two males drinking beer on the east side of the beach, the RCMP approached them and told them they were prohibited from drinking beer in a public place. One of the men, a 30-year-old Calgary resident, told the RCMP that he didn’t know he wasn’t allowed to drink beer on the beach.

Nonetheless, he was issued a violation ticket for consuming liquor in a public place.

B.C. law is different from Alberta’s in that there are no “designated picnic areas” where liquor consumption is permitted as long as food is being consumed. In B.C., if you drink in a public area at all, you are in violation of the liquor control and licensing act.

Cheers to the person who returned one of our missing yellow boxes. The box went missing months ago from the spot beside the mailboxes at Laird School, and long after we had given up on it, it magically

reappeared in the same place.

Since we are still one yellow box short, our distributors David and Florence Raven have placed the returned yellow box at the former Windermere store on the highway.

Downtown developer wants another two metres of height

By Alex Cooper Pioneer Staff Developers of a key new development in downtown Invermere are looking to raise the roof again.

Stoneset Equities has asked the District of Invermere to increase the maximum height of Phase One of its Vista Del Lago development to 17 metres, two metres higher than allowed under the current development permit bylaw.

“In our attempt to provide a building that addresses the District’s request to have a structure that would be visually stimulating, we had to provide a roof system that exceeded the 15-metre height restriction,” wrote Tony Argento, Chief Executive Officer of Stoneset Equities in a letter to the district.

The proposed development will include a conference centre, 144 hotel rooms, 570 condominiums, and 45,000 square feet of commercial space when completed. The development was first proposed in November 2005 by Octagon Development and labelled “Waterside.” It was later sold to Stoneset Equities and relabelled “Vista del Lago.”

One hundred and twenty-five people attended a public hearing in May 2006, and more than 30 residents expressed opposition to the large-scale project.

With this in mind, the district recommended public consultations on the proposed height variance even

though there is no statutory requirement for public notification of council’s intention to issue variances in conjunction with development permits.

“Due to the nature and scope of the request, we are asking the variance to the height bylaw be forwarded to the people in the area for review,” said distict planner Rory Hromadnik.

Councillor Gerry Taft agreed with a public review of the request. “There will be scrutiny not just from our neighbours, but from the entire valley,” he said.

“We owe it to the neighbours to ask their opinion and receive their comments.”

Stoneset said they could achieve the 15-metre height requirements if they were allowed to build a flat roof; however, the distict has said they would not approve such a design.

“In our opinion, if we are forced to go to a flat roof to achieve the 15-metre height, it will destroy the character that we wanted to portray in the design and ultimate construction of the project,” Mr. Argento said in his letter.

Councillor Sarah Bennett said she would like to see a scale model in order to visualize the height. “It would be helpful to have a rendering showing the centre with the extra two metres,” she said.

Chris Prosser, chief administrative officer, said notices would be handed out. A meeting to review comments will be held on July 16th.

Kicking Horse coffee rezoning decision postponed for 3 months

By Elinor Florence Pioneer Staff A decision on Kicking Horse Coffee’s application to rezone a five-acre parcel in Windermere has been deferred until October.

The Regional District of East Kootenay Board of Directors voted yes on a motion from Area F director Lillian Rose to defer the decision until the Lake Windermere Official Community Plan has been completed, with development permit guidelines.

The application from Kicking Horse owners Leo Johnson and Elana Rosenfeld would change the zoning of the property at the corner of the highway and North Street from Rural Residential to Light Industrial. The owners have stated their intention to build an administration office and day-care centre.

They currently have a roasting facility and coffee shop on leased Shuswap land near the Invermere crossroads.

Ms. Rose told the board that the June 23rd public hearing attended by 76 people drew “quite a lot of vocal opposition to the zoning.”

She said the closest neighbours to the property

are residents of the nearby mobile-home park. “This is one of the few affordable housing areas in the valley and residents are worried about the amount of truck traffic entering and leaving the area.”

At the public hearing, concerns included the smell of roasting coffee beans, future uses of an industrial zone, and decrease in property values.

Ms. Rose said there is a lot of community support for the company itself. “I truly believe they are good corporate citizens,” she said, adding that she personally cannot support the rezoning to Light Industrial.

She said the extra time will give the owners a chance to work with the community to change their minds. “They have some public relations work to do,” she said.

The Lake Windermere Official Community Plan is expected to be reviewed at the board’s next meeting on August 1st. The Kicking Horse application will probably have a second public hearing to consider new information that the applicants will share with the community before then, said regional planner Andrew McLeod. In that case, the bylaw will return to the board in November.

Rescue vehicle top priority

During the course of this week, I was once again struck by the number of families in our community who have lost family members to car accidents.

I knew about Ken and Agnes Bell of Radium, whose beautiful daughter Dianne was killed last Christmas Eve at Fairmont. I didn’t know about Vic and Lil Penner’s beloved son Brian, who was killed in 1975 just after graduating from our local high school.

There is something wrong with our society’s passive, fatalistic acceptance of motor vehicle accidents.

Our laws should be strictly enforced, our penalties for unsafe driving harsher, and our speed limits lower.

Having said all that (again), I want to make another huge plea to donate to the Invermere Volunteer Fire Department’s new rescue vehicle.

Yes, it’s going to cost half-a-million dollars, the equivalent of a house. But if you imagine your loved one trapped in a vehicle, his life ebbing away because the volunteers don’t have the right equipment to get him out, I’m sure you would gladly sign over the deed to your own house to save him.

Secondly, we have many thousands of volunteers in this community who do splendid work. But there should be another, special name for those volunteers who are willing to drop everything at a moment’s notice to pull damaged bodies out of crashed vehicles.

It doesn’t happen here like it does on television, where a team of trained professionals with the latest equipment shows up, sirens blazing, within minutes.

What happens in our valley is that a handful of local volunteers arrives with a smaller, older rescue vehicle that they clearly believe is inadequate.

Our terrain is treacherous, our weather unpredictable, and our community is a long way from the nearest big hospital. We need all the help we can get.

Resident opposes removal of Lot 4616 from ALR Dear Norm Macdonald, MLA: We live in Invermere, just above the infamous lot 4616. We have recently become aware of the application to remove the lot from the ALR. We oppose this. This seems to be the only protection we have against this lot being developed. We have an excess of developments in the valley already and do not feel any developers’ greed will be sated by the development of one more parcel of land.

Hopefully, the powers that be will consider the

lot’s location within the community and its present level of use by locals.

We were not aware that the provincial government was so cash-strapped that it needs to sell off Crown land as a revenue generator. Maybe if the province needs a short-term loan to pay for the Olympics, they can always ask Alberta.

Akisqnuk support removal of Lot 4616 from agricultural reserve Dear Editor: This letter is an effort to clear up some misinformation that appeared your July 4th, 2008 editorial on Lot 4616. In the piece you write that “Both of the local native bands, both of whom seem to be opposed to development on philosophical grounds, want Lot 4616 sold so that they can receive the cash instead.” While I cannot comment on behalf of the Shuswap Indian Band I am the lead negotiator on this matter on behalf of my band and I will address both ideas from the perspective of the Akisqnuk First Nation.

First, the administration of the Akisqnuk First Nation has never stated a position against development. Land development and construction is a major means of economic development and prosperity for the Columbia Valley and the Akisqnuk First Nation is ready and willing to assume our share of that prosperity, for the betterment of our community. Certainly my band is opposed to development in specific, culturallyrelevant locations, for example Lot 48 and the Painted Rock development in Canal Flats. However, Lot 4616 does not meet that criteria and your assertion that we are “philosophically opposed” to development is a stereotype that is not based in fact.

The idea that we’d like to have the land sold so we “can receive the cash” is also inaccurate. No agenda for the sale of Lot 4616 has been spoken about.

Like Invermere and the Shuswap Indian Band, we do not own this piece of land.

Realistically ownership will require the input of cash, and to my knowledge, none of the parties have agreed to any sort of purchase agreement.

Crown land is one means of economic development available to First Nations in British Columbia and it would not be wise for the Akisqnuk First Nation to let this opportunity pass without examining all options.

Removal of Lot 4616 from the ALR is a means to remove uncertainty surrounding this piece of land and establish just what that opportunity is. In this way it is similar to the archeological, geotechnical, and ethnobotany assessments that have been or will be done on Lot 4616.

Tournament raises $20,000 for Denise

The Denise Reid softball tournament fundraiser was a home-run hit. More than $20,000 was raised over the course of last weekend to support Ms. Reid in her fight against breast cancer.

“It’s so great to see the community come out like this,” said Ms. Reid, a lifelong Invermere resident.

The 35-year-old Ms. Reid was diagnosed with breast cancer on May 7th and underwent surgery less than two weeks later.

She will begin chemotherapy treatments on Tuesday, July 15th.

The tournament, held at the crossroads baseball diamonds, attracted both players and numerous onlookers out to support the cause and cheer on the teams on the field. Concessions were provided by local businesses.

A hugely successful silent auction held alongside the games raised over $8,000.

“I love this valley,” said friend and organizer Tanya Roe.

“They just never stop giving.”

The tournament featured 16 teams that battled wind and light rain while playing.

Spirits were high throughout the weekend and all teams were decked out in pink in a show of support for Denise Reid.

Some people went all out, with one man sporting a pink troll-doll wig, while another dyed the tips of his hair pink.

Ms. Reid also took part in the tournament and helped her team, The Mound Hogs, make the semi-finals.

Unfortunately the Mound Hogs went down in defeat to The Rough Riders.

In the end, after three days of play, the final came down to The Rough Riders and The Chuggers.

In a marathon match that rivalled Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer’s epic Wimbledon final the same day, the Rough Riders emerged victorious in extra innings to take the crown.

“I’ve never seen a softball game go that long,” said Ms. Roe. “It was awesome. It was a great tournament.”

Troubled teens are one-upped by their even more troubled parents in this high-school drama.

Anton Yelchin plays rich kid Charlie Bartlett, who is expelled from yet another private school for manufacturing and selling fake IDs. Bright colours unite female artists at Artym

By Deanna Berrington The Artym Gallery The Artym Gallery is pleased to present a show featuring three female artists: Maya Eventov, Heather Haynes and Natalya Romanovsky.

The show will open with an evening reception on Friday, July 11th, from 69 p.m., and will continue on Saturday from 10 a.m.

This colourful work by Maya Eventov will be on show at Artym. to 5:30 p.m.

Her technique of layering washes and including florals from Romanovsky and ethereal treescapes from stencils of lace, and gold or silver leaf gives her work a Haynes.

A young artist, Heather Haynes of Ontario started surreal and often mystical feel.

Natalya Romanovsky’s florals have a charming making her mark on the Canadian art scene early.

As well as having work appear in galleries in North simplicity, a folksy naïvety that is at once comforting

and captivating. Even as a child, Natalya was drawn to art and eventually got a degree in graphic design in her native Moldova.

Natalya’s paintings are a combination of modern design technique with ancient folk-art roots, etching texture into the acrylic paint and using vibrant colours to create her unique works.

The paintings of Maya Eventov are always a favourite at the Artym Gallery and she has gone through a few different techniques and subjects since they opened their doors seven years ago.

Most well-known for her Tuscan and Spanish balcony scenes done with a palate knife, Maya has also done a series of florals in oil etched with gold, and a cabin series in a naïve style.

Her latest project is painting birch trees and Canadian landscapes, again done with a palate knife in acrylic paint, allowing her to use incredibly vibrant colours and spectacular texture.

These three artists are from the east and unfortunately can’t make the long trip out to Invermere for this show; although both Maya and Heather have made the trip from Ontario previously, scheduling conflicts conspired to keep them away this year.

Alice Hale’s Caraway Studio featured on Tour of the Arts

By Lynda Tutty Columbia Valley Arts Council A pretty little sign just out of Invermere on Westside Road directs art lovers to Caraway Studio, the home and creative space of Alice Hale.

The studio is one of six sites on the Columbia Valley Tour of the Arts, taking place on Sunday, August 3rd, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Alice is looking forward to “talking to valley residents and visitors and showing them my art,” she said.

“Many people don’t know what local artists do and how their art is created. This event will give them an inside view on the artist’s work.”

The first annual Columbia Valley Tour of the Arts is a self-guided tour of six studios and gardens, spread from Lillian Lake to the Hoodoos at Dutch Creek.

The resident artist at each site, as well as guest artists, will demonstrate, explain and display their artistic crafts. A total of 31 artists working in a variety of media – wood, paints, glass, clay and metal – are participating. Artwork is offered for sale at each site.

Alice Hale has worked with clay for 35 years.

She said, “My inspiration comes largely from nature.

There are universal parallels and metaphors of our lives in nature.

“By using the images from the natural world, we offer points of reference that touch everyone. The pots and clay works are concrete expressions of my life. The best ones ‘articulate the mystery (Ezra Pound)’ and define who I am.”

Alice uses six different methods of firing and

glazing to produce her beautifully hued and textured clay pieces. She invites you to come and learn about processes like naked Raku, saggar firing and sawdust firing. You can learn how chemical salts, moss, leaves, even banana skins can be fired with the pots to create wonderful colours.

Tour of the Arts Passports include driving directions and a map highlighting each of the sites.

Passports are $20 (children 12 and younger are free with an adult) and will be stamped at each site.

Passport holders who collect all six Tour stamps are eligible for a special draw prize (Tin Horn Creek Winery and golf package in the Okanagan).

At the end of the afternoon, Tour patrons and artists are all invited to a reception at Pynelogs from 4-6 p.m.

Passports can be purchased on Saturday mornings at the Arts Council kiosk in front of Dave’s Book Bar, or every day at Pynelogs, Essentials, One Hour Photo and Bliss Hair & Esthetics in Invermere, Trims & Treasures Esthetics Studio in Fairmont, and N’Deco Interiors in Radium.

A committee of volunteers has worked on the Tour for months to create a major artistic highlight for local residents as well as a destination for visitors from Alberta and elsewhere in the Kootenays.

Community to celebrate our beautiful valley

By Sally Waddington Pioneer Staff The upcoming Valley Appreciation Day is an effort to bring together residents of and visitors to the Columbia Valley.

Now in its 21st year, the event is sponsored by local businesses and involves a fair on Invermere’s 7th Avenue in the morning and a community dance in the evening.

Paul Christy, director of the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce and chair of the Invermere Business Committee, explains that the day started out as “a thank you to all the visitors who come to our valley and give our local economy such a boost.

“It has grown into a celebration of life here in the valley, and how fortunate we are to be here, whether we’re full-time, part-time or just visiting,” Mr. Christy said.

The event kicks off at 8 a.m. with a free pancake breakfast on 7th Avenue, courtesy of the area’s service clubs.

A stage outside the Bank of Montreal will host a range of live acts, including Deb and the Dreamers and the Belly Dancers of Invermere.

A lumberjack show will be performed twice, at 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Local family the Gagnes will display axe throwing, saw races, log chopping and chainsaw carving.

“The Gagnes have been putting on shows for many years, and they compete at and win national events,” said Mr. Christy.

What’s more, clowns will be entertaining the crowd, bounce castles will be inflated for the kids and, like any other summer Saturday, the farmers’ market will be open for business.

The fun continues until 1 p.m.; motorists should be aware that 7th Avenue will be closed until 2 p.m.

That evening is the second annual ‘50s and ‘60s Sock Hop at Invermere Curling Club on 13th Street.

Welcoming everyone over 19, the dance starts at 9 p.m., and there will be a buffet at 11 p.m.

Music will be performed by Cranbrook band Kenny & The Cruisers, and prizes will be given out for the best-dressed Greaser and Bobby Soxer. There will also be prizes awarded for the jive, the twist, the limbo – and the hula hoop!

“This musical era is as popular now as it was back then,” said Heather Overy, executive director of CVCC. “People young and old still enjoy a jive, twist or slow dance.”

Mr. Christy agrees: “The Sock Hop is just plain fun. It’s a perfect way to end a great day.”

Tickets for the dance are $30 and can only be purchased in advance at the CVCC office at the Invermere crossroads on Highway 93/95, or at Dave’s Book Bar. You can reserve a ticket by calling (250) 342-2844.

White House Classic next weekend

By Sally Waddington Pioneer Staff Now in its 26th year, the two-day White House Classic will be held on Friday, July 18th, and Saturday, July 19th, at the White House Hotel in Windermere.

Raising money for local community initiatives and families in need, the event kicks off with a live auction at 9 p.m. on Friday, with items from Rivergems, Bighorn Meadows and Windermere Golf Course among the list.

On Saturday, the fun kicks off at noon with a 6-hole golf tournament. At 3 p.m. a silent auction begins, and at 5 p.m. there will be a parade through Windermere.

The customary water balloon fight will not be held during the parade this year; those who want to get wet will be able to participate later in the evening.

There will also be balloons on sale for $20 that contain a mystery item; last year the big win was two sapphires! And Johnny Tornado and the Blue Tones will be performing both evenings.

Submitted by Patsy Kachanoski The little 1949 Chevrolet Canopy Express truck that proudly works under the “Hopkins Harvest” banner at the Invermere farmers market is a star.

The shiny little emerald green truck with its striped awning caught the attention of Dennis Gage, host of the International television show “My Classic Cars” at the Penticton car show in June.

With over 650 vehicles in attendance, only a few were selected to be on the prestigious show that airs weekly on the Speed Channel. The word was out that the TV crew would be at the Penticton’s Peach City Beach Cruise car show, so a lot of valuable classic vehicles from across Canada were there to compete.

Owners Patsy and Ivan Kachanoski of Fairmont Hot Springs were honoured that their little “Huckster” was selected for “My Classic Cars.”

We had watched Dennis peruse the ve-

hicles at the show and he passed by a triple crown winner next to Huck and stopped his cart dead in front of Huck.

He jumped out and said: “Oh yes, this one is a must.” I think that is when I quit breathing. It didn’t surprise me, as Huck has her own way of melting people’s hearts and she had obviously spun her magic again.

The filming took less than an hour and Dennis was a real gentleman. We had outfitted the wooden boxes in Huck with private label “Huckster Wine,” and a beautiful selection of fresh vegetables donated by Fred Hopkins. Dennis asked questions about the special design of the Canopy Express truck and the challenges of starting a vehicle with a floor starter. The show airs in 2009.

We knew we had found a very special vehicle when we first saw Huck at the 2007 Barrett Jackson car auction in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The little truck has always won first at car shows with official judging except once, when it lost out to Blue Moon, Patsy’s 1958

GMC in Sandpoint, Idaho in 2007.

The late Darrel Cabbetto was our mentor in our Classic Truck adventures and we dearly miss him. Darrel was the only person who officially identified Huck as a Chevrolet Canopy Express truck.

Huck has also been featured in a fivepage spread in “Canadian Classics and Performance Magazine.” We were really proud when the Huckster took first in its division in the Western Canadian Nationals in Brandon, Manitoba in 2007.

The little truck sports a jewel-encrusted butterfly on the mirror as a good luck charm from a special admirer who watched the truck being built.

Walkers Repair services the Classic trucks, which is a fun challenge for the mechanics, who are all younger than the trucks.

The favorite word used to describe Huck at the shows is cute. She melts hearts and we are proud that she is Canadian and a resident of the Windermere Valley. The Huckster is the crown jewel of “Patsy’s Classic Trucks.”

Early, on time or never: when is the best time to retire?

In Canada, retirement age has traditionally been defined as 65 years old. However, according to Statistics Canada, on average Canadians today are retiring closer to age 61.

All ages welcome at Hoodstock

Everyone from toddlers to seniors is welcome at Hoodstock this weekend.

The music festival will begin at noon, Saturday, July 12th, at the Hoodoo field, on Highway 93/95 opposite the Hoodoos in Fairmont Hot Springs.

“We’d like to expose kids to live music,” said Hoodstock organizer and Hoodoo Grill owner, Rory Sinclair. “We want to showcase music talent that’s around the area or comes through.”

Thirteen bands will perform on two stages throughout the day. There will be acoustic acts like Jessica Hansen, M.O.O.S and Danno. For a rockabilly sound, there’s The Grave Mistakes. The Hip Replacements are a Tragically Hip cover band. And The Halfsacks are

renowned around the valley for their bluegrass tunes.

Headlining the festival are McCuaig, a rock band with bagpipes that Rory describes as “a whole lot of fun,” and The Honeymans, “Canadiana ska” that combines rock and violin.

Also hitting the stage will be Standby For The Bomb, Rory’s own band Thinking Man, Rubber Soul, Kalliband and Payne Bluff.

Off stage, food vendors will provide hotdogs, burgers and other fast food.

The Hoodoo Grill next door will be open for business. Stalls selling jewellery and clothing will be set up on the grounds.

Tickets are $25; under 10s can enter for free. Pick up tickets at Dave’s Book Bar in Invermere, or at the Hoodoo Grill or Hoodoo Gas in Fairmont. If not sold out, tickets will be sold at the gate.

Ken and Agnes Bell say farewell

By Alex Cooper Pioneer Staff Long-time valley residents Ken and Agnes Bell are moving away. The couple has decided to sell their home near Radium and move to Calgary to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

The decision isn’t entirely by choice, and circumstances have dictated they move sooner rather than later. Mrs. Bell was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease three years ago and Mr. Bell has just turned 80.

They realized it was time to leave.

“We decided that if we’re forced to move, we’ll do it at our convenience,” said Mr. Bell. “We hate to leave the valley but we had to make a decision.”

The Bells have left a lasting impact on the valley through their store, Golden Eagle Trading Post, their involvement with the Rotary Club, and Mr. Bell’s political involvement.

Born in Calgary, Mr. Bell first came to the Columbia Valley in 1943 when he was working on the railway. He said he fell in love with the place right away.

He married Agnes in 1953 and the two of them lived in Regina.

They would drive to the valley from there with a car full of kids to go camping.

In 1966 they made a permanent move to Radium and opened the Golden Eagle Trading Post.

The store carried souvenirs, clothing and postcards and had two totem poles and a golden eagle out front to catch the eyes of tourists.

The store was a Radium landmark for several decades.

At first the Bells lived in the basement of the store with their five children – Warren, Judy, Sharon, Ken, and Dianne.

Back then Radium was much smaller, there were only two nine-hole golf courses in the whole valley and Panorama had yet to open. “Radium was quite different,” said Mr. Bell.“It was very quiet back then and only busy in June and July.”

At that time the hot springs were the main tourist draw and the Bells recalled one May long weekend when 7,000 people filled the pools.

All those tourists also helped business and the Bells doubled the size of their store and went into wholesale.

The basement was converted into a warehouse space full of souvenirs.

In 1972 they built themselves a home on Duby Road overlooking the Radium golf course, which had only nine holes at the time.

They were among the first three people to build

Mr. Bell was also a founder of the Radium Rotary Club and served as acting president when it first began. These days, the club is building a park in town and working on a trail network on Sinclair Creek. “It’s a small club, but we’re very active,” said Mr. Bell.

Their involvement with Rotary brought them to conventions around the world, including ones in Australia, South Korea and Scotland. They said their favourite convention was just over the mountains, in Calgary.

Mr. Bell was also politically involved.

He said he was instrumental in getting Radium incorporated and was also president of the Reform Party Ko o t e n a y - C o l u m b i a riding constituency. In 1993 he pushed for Jim Abbott to represent the party in the riding, and Mr. Abbott has been elected five times since.

While he never ran for office himself, he actively supported his chosen candidates.

Over the years the Bells saw their children grow up and leave the valley. Warren, Judy, Ken and Dianne moved to Calgary, and Sharon moved to Langley, B.C. AROUND THE VALLEY Pioneers come home to Edgewater

By Alex Cooper Pioneer Staff Hundreds of valley pioneers travelled to the area from near and far to celebrate the Edgewater Homecoming last weekend.

The annual celebration was attended by 500 people, both current residents and many who have left the valley.

They came from as far away as Australia and Idaho to join in the festivities.

Walt and Amanda Kemble even rode their horses to the event! Now living in Indus, Alberta, they rode from Kootenay Crossing, over the Kootenay Pass, into Edgewater. It took them two days.

Heavy rain put a slight damper on the event, which included live music, games, an ice-cream social and a pioneer tea.

But the weather couldn’t prevent people from enjoying themselves.

Country band The Dry Gulch Ramblers performed outside under the awning of the Edgewater Community Hall as sheets of rain fell from the sky and off the roof. People took cover under tents that were set up for the weekend.

Inside, friends and family shared stories while enjoying tea and dessert.

Barry Moore and Wanda Seel entertained the crowd on the piano.

In fact, Mrs. Seel was playing the same piano that she rescued from a fire at the community hall in 1954.

She pushed the piano out the door of the hall and the 100-year-old piano continues to sound as good as ever.

Ann Burnett, one of the event’s coordinators, said the homecoming was a success.

“The reaction from people was awesome,” she said. “It was a great party and great fun.”

A cookbook was on sale at the homecoming, with funds going towards a bursary for Edgewater students graduating from high school.

Mayor’s rezoning application successful

By Elinor Florence Pioneer Staff Invermere Mayor Mark Shmigelsky excused himself from the monthly Regional District Board of Directors meeting while the directors voted on his application to rezone his property at 9455 Toby Ridge Road on the Toby Benches. In his absence directors voted to support the rezoning application.

Mr. Shmigelsky and his wife Robin applied to change the zoning designation of their property from Rural Residential (Country) Zone to Small Holding Rural (Open Space) Zone.

The rezoning will allow subdivision so that the owners can create one 2.0 hectare (4.9-acre) lot and one 4.2-hectare (10.4-acre) lot.

A report from a public hearing held at the

Windermere Community Hall on June 23rd was received, showing that six members had attended the public hearing. Three people registered their opposition to the rezoning. Nolan Rad of Clover Road, Albert Cooper of Toby Benches and Chris Wrazej of Young Road were opposed.

Opposing concerns include opposition to any subdivision in the Toby Benches area, preserving wildlife habitat and the potential lack of water.

District planner Andrew McLeod told the directors that the rezoning does fall within the guidelines of the Toby Benches Land Use Strategy, adopted in 1998. The strategy supports maintaining the existing rural character of the area, but allows subdivision of parcels smaller than eight hectares (19.8 acres) in a few select locations.

Mr. Shmigelsky sold his house in Invermere and

moved with his family to the Toby Benches two years ago, making him a resident of the regional district.

He may still serve as Invermere’s mayor since legally he is not required to be a resident of the town.

According to the Local Government Act, an elected official can live anywhere in the province and run for office if he or she is 18 years old, a Canadian citizen and has resided in the province for at least six months.

Mr. Shmiglesky has already stated that he will not run for mayor in the November election.

Since the 2005 municipal election, Invermere councillor Bob Campsall also moved out of town and lives in the regional district on an acreage at Larch Point, 10 kilometres south of town. Councillors Ray Brydon, Sarah Bennett and Gerry Taft reside in Invermere. Mr. Taft plans to run for mayor.

New rotary executive named

By Alex Cooper Pioneer Staff The new president of the Invermere Rotary Club admits to being a little intimidated by his new position.

“Looking back at past presidents and the people who worked with them, it’s a scary honour and a great privilege,” said Dave Penner at his first meeting in his new post.

Mr. Penner joined the Rotary Club just over six years ago on the advice of his father, who is a Whitehorse Rotarian. “He suggested it would be a good way to connect and give back to the community,” he said. “Rotary Club is a great way to refocus every week on great things in life.”

As president, he wants to create a strong vision for the future. His aim is to set out a plan for the next three years, then be ready to look ahead three more years after that.

“I want to do something in four avenues of service – vocational, club, community and international,” he said.

The club has recently completed its participation in a literary project in Mexico and is looking into partnering with the Walla Walla Rotary Club in a project involving the installation of water wells in an area of Nigeria.

Mr. Penner said he wants to start one major international project during his time as president. “What I think makes it a fun club and keeps me coming back is a project I’m interested in,” he said. “Personally I would be excited with a project in Sierra Leone.”

He won’t be alone in his efforts. The Rotary Club also appointed its 10-member board for the next year.

“I’m expecting to have a lot of help,” said Mr. Penner.

Mr. Penner grew up in northern B.C. and lived in the Yukon before moving to Panorama nine years ago with his wife and kids. He was no stranger to the hill, having enjoyed ski vacations here for several years.

Blue-bag recycling takes off

By Alex Cooper Pioneer Staff The first four weeks of curbside recycling have been a success. “I drove around today and the participation is quite good for the start of a program,” said Karen Nickurak, a consultant assisting the district with the program’s implementation.

“I saw one house with 12 bags out front, though most people only had one or two.”

Invermere resident Gordon Fraser said the program is a marvelous idea. “The service is very good,” he said. “I believe in recycling, so it’s nice to see it made more convenient.”

According to Southeast Waste, the contractor doing the pickups, the first week saw 60 percent of homes put out their recycling and that number increased to 75 percent the second week.

“Invermere has a lot of non-residents,” said Mrs.

Nickurak. “When you factor that in, the number is quite high.”

Recycling is picked up every two weeks.

Residents living south of 13th Street had their pickup the first week, and residents living north of 13th Street had it picked up in the second week.

Invermere Mayor Mark Shmigelsky said that the second round of pick-ups went better than the first. “That means we had a lot of repeats and some new users the second time around,” he said.

Mr. Shmigelsky said that most residents have been supportive of curbside recycling, although some residents who already recycle aren’t happy.

“We’re doing it so more people take part and to make it easier for people who aren’t able to bring their recycling to the yard,” he said.

Mrs. Nickurak said the contractor noticed some issues with people putting non-recyclables such as styrofoam out, but it wasn’t too big a problem.

Volunteers asked to give time to retirement village

Valley residents with spare time and a desire to chat are being asked to consider volunteering at Columbia Garden Village.

Opened in 2005, the retirement village has 11 staff, attending to 71 residents.

As little as one hour a month is required of volunteers, but the more help the better. They can choose what activity they assist with: residents participate in crafts, bingo, cribbage and puzzleconstructing, among other things.

A particularly valuable service is to take a resident shopping, since the Garden Village bus operates on a schedule and doesn’t allow for wander time.

Because of the workload, paid employees often don’t have the time to chat with residents.

“Volunteers can draw conversation out of the residents,” said Deb Saffin, regional manager at

Resident advisor Margaret Peers agrees. “The residents love having volunteers here,” she said. “It brings the community in.”

Musical talent is also well-appreciated. The village’s dining room houses a grand piano and Mrs. Saffin suggests piano teachers use it to expose their students to performance. “Or a school band or church choir,” she added.

There are now just three regular volunteers at the village – so the need is great. The retired and stay-athome parents would be suited, as well as high school students considering studying health care at college.

Mrs. Saffin explains that students need to earn volunteer hours to be eligible for courses like nursing.

“It gives them a good start,” she said, “plus insight into the work they want to do.”

Eagle Ranch launches new luxury homes

By Alex Cooper Pioneer Staff After years of planning, Stone Creek Properties broke ground on the new luxury homes for its residence club at Eagle Ranch Golf Resort last week.

“This is truly a red-letter day for Stone Creek and Eagle Ranch,” said Guy Turcotte, president and Chief Executive Officer of Stone Creek Properties Inc. Lot 4616 plan ‘incomprehensible’ Dear Invermere Mayor and Council: We strongly support your efforts to oppose the Provincial Government’s application to have this very important and scenic Lot 4616 removed from the Agricultural Land Reserve.

The provincial government, with this action, is “killing the goose that lays the golden egg.” A fundamental basis for attracting tourists to this area is to provide scenic parkland for visitors to enjoy natural beauty, tranquillity and escape from everincreasing residential developments and traffic.

The very idea of selling this beautiful piece of

A facelift, an expansion and a new restaurant have given Radium’s PetroCanada, otherwise known as Radium Supermart, a new lease on life.

The renovations, started in September last year, have seen owners Kerry and Lori Ellingboe extend their business to include a Subway store. The restaurant opened on April 7th this year and, so far, it’s a big success.

“It’s doing very well. It’s been wellreceived,” said Mr. Ellingboe. “A lot of people have thanked us for setting up this restaurant.”

The Ellingboes reconfigured their entire building as part of the renovation.

The old washrooms and laundromat, located at the rear of the building, were converted into store space, and 700 square feet were lopped off the front of the building to make more room for the pumps.

A new building was installed on the side of the existing store, and it houses new washrooms and a new laundromat, as well as the Subway restaurant. Radium Supermart has requested to be the British Columbia testing site for EMV pumps, cutting-edge technology that is only in two other Petro-Canada gas stations in the country. Arriving on July 28th, the pumps have been created for soon-to-

be-released credit cards that contain a microchip instead of a magnetic strip.

They will double the capacity of the gas station’s existing pumps.

“We have totally changed and expanded the gas station,” said Mr. Ellingboe. “We wanted to have a new look and a new image.”

The Petro-Canada is located at the four-way stop in Radium. Across the road is a Husky gas station, and diagonally opposite is an Esso. But Mr. Ellingboe said the renovation has little to do with competition.

“Everybody has their own nature,” he said. “We’ve all got our own little niche.”

Kerry Ellingboe moved to the Columbia Valley from Beaverlodge, Alberta, with his wife Lori and three kids in 1995 when his oldest child Shon was just four. As well as the Radium store they had just purchased, the family also owned a Tags Food & Gas business in Sexsmith, Alberta. In 1998, they purchased an Esso in Fairmont.

For about nine months, the Ellingboes owned and operated three gas stations.

“It was too much,” Mr. Ellingboe said, “especially with young kids.”

In 1998 they sold the Sexsmith store, then the Esso in 2000. The renovations that are now nearing completion should see Radium Supermart prosper well into the future.

New Subway owner behind counter

By Alex Cooper Pioneer Staff For new Invermere Subway owner Manny Raval, business is a family affair.

He runs the restaurant with his wife Lopa, daughter Neha, son Parth, and his son’s wife Shrutie.

It makes for some long days, too.

Due to the labour shortage in the Columbia Valley, Mr. Raval has been struggling to find employees to ease the burden.

“It’s hard to find employees for Subway here, so we all work eight to 10 hours a day,” he said.

Mr. Raval bought the restaurant last Feburary from Bruce Park. He’s no stranger to the business, having owned a Subway in Ontario before making the move west.

An Indian immigrant, Mr. Raval first moved to Canada in 2001. He was an electrical engineer for a hydro company in the Gujarat province of India and found himself working at factory jobs in Toronto after he immigrated.

“I was happy in India, but I wanted to better take care of my family,” he said.

After five years, he decided it was time to go into business and he partnered with a friend to open up a Subway in Simcoe, Ontario.

They chose Subway because the franchise fees weren’t too expensive and they’re easier to run. He had help from some friends he followed into the business.

“At that time many people in the Indian community were buying Subway restaurants,” he said. “Some friends of mine had bought them. Half of the Subways in Ontario are owned

by Indians.”

After two years he decided to move out on his own. The demand in Ontario was too high, so he followed some friends of his out west and jumped at the opportunity to buy the Subway in Invermere when it came on the market.

“I like to live in a natural place,” he said. “Toronto is very busy, but it’s nice and peaceful here.”

He praises his customers for being cooperative, and enjoys the friendliness of everyone in the community.

What is community?

It was witnessed first hand this weekend at the benefit ball tournament for Denise Reid. Sixteen ball teams plus many other locals all came together at the Lion’s Ball Park to support a great contributor to this community, Denise Reid. Having grown up in this valley, Greg and I were overwhelmed watching everyone having so much fun, reminding us what a solid community this has always been and will be for years to come. Many people have heard me say what a wonderful person Denise is as head coach of the skating club as well as a special part of our family. Well, Sorry Denise, not today! This time I am writing to thank this amazing community for their generosity. The skating club ran the concession for the weekend and everybody we approached for help gave more than we could ever have expected. Special thanks to Randy Brash and Sobeys for their generous contribution and help. As well, thanks to Rick Hoar and the Lake Windermere District Lions Club for supplying breakfast for everyone Saturday morning. His daughter is also registering for nursing school at the College of the Rockies.

Since taking over, Mr. Raval has extended the store’s opening hours by two hours. His next goal is to start selling Subway pizza – something that is offered only in the United States and Ontario so far.

As a vegetarian, his favourite sandwich is the veggie sub. Before buying a Subway restaurant he knew very little about meat, having come from a strictly vegetarian region of India.

“Now I know all about ham, turkey, and everything else,” he said. “That’s why I can’t wait to get the pizza over here – so I can start making veggie pizzas.”

It isn’t hard to see the impact that climate change has already had on our province: the mountain pine beetle epidemic, the storms that devastated Stanley Park, the floods of 2007, the loss of water supply to over 900,000 people in 2006, the wildfires of 2003 and the depletion of our glaciers.

In BC, 36% of all greenhouse gas emissions come from transportation. It’s estimated that BC’s carbon tax will save up to 3 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually; this is equal to taking nearly 790,000 cars off the road each year.

So how do we decide where we get the biggest bang for our bucks?

It would seem to me that if scenery is an important requirement for you, you can drive to any of the 15 courses between Spillimacheen and Canal Flats and get an eyeful of whatever view you enjoy.

If you want to get in a quick round, there are several par-3 or executive courses eager for a visit.

If you want to walk rather than take a cart, there are a few courses where that’s not possible (such as Greywolf, Eagle Ranch and Copper Point), but the rest are walkable – some definitely more so than others.

If you need to warm up on a range before your round, don’t go to Radium Resort, Edgewater Hilltop Par 3, Setetkwa, Mountainside or Creekside.

So we haven’t really narrowed it down very much, have we? Where do we go for the best value?

For me, the best value and most enjoyment comes from a course that provides not only great scenic views, challenging golf holes or true greens, but a place that makes you feel welcome and where they are actually glad you chose their course. I like to be pampered and made to feel special and if a course can’t do that on a regular basis for any of their guests, I don’t go out of my way to spend my green-fee money there. With so many choices in our area, all 15 courses need to strive to make the experience the best thing possible for each and every golfer who shows up in their pro shop.

Golfers have lots of choices and limited funds. Each golf course needs to “keep their eye on the ball” if they want to survive in this highly competitive industry.

Make the visit special in whatever way possible for all your guests – today, tomorrow and every day.

Tricky manoeuvres take practice control. You should constantly move the throttle in and out of gear to maintain very slow progress. A general rule of thumb is to be in gear one third of the time and be in neutral two thirds. Remember: you will still be moving when in neutral and you should determine if there is any wind that will push your boat.

The passengers should position themselves to cushion the landing and grab the dock or trailer.

Balance your load

When towing, it is important to balance the weight in your boat. Seat your passengers equally on both sides. This will help the boat run level, which keeps the wakes balanced.

With an uneven load, the boat leans to one side and makes the wakes uneven.

Another issue is the bow (front) seating area.

Remember that passengers in this area will obstruct the driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s view. When driving, limit seating in the bow to kids whom the driver can see over.

Control your speed when parking

For new boaters, one of the most intimidating experiences is parking. This is a diďŹ&#x192;cult skill that takes some practice. Whether you are parking at a dock or loading your boat back on the trailer, the skills needed are the same. The most important thing is speed

Mastering the button-hook turn

An important driving manoeuvre when towing is the button-hook turn. The most common time to use the button hook is when you are towing someone through nice, calm water but want to turn around and go back the way you came.

If you do a big, arching turn and drive back parallel to your initial path, you will be towing your rider through the waves you just created. The better way to turn around is to do a tighter turn, then immediately cross your own wake and drive back on exactly the same path you came from. The waves you created will be moving away from your original path and there will be nice, calm water all the way back. The button-hook turn is not diďŹ&#x192;cult; you just have to be a little more aggressive with a tighter turn. It is important to signal to the rider that you are turning so they can get right behind the boat for the turn.

Nancy had been failing in health for the past two years or so and finally lost her life due to emphysema and heart failure in the presence of her eldest daughter, Joanne who was with her in her final few hours.

Relax with some suggested summer reading

By Fraser Coltman St. Peter’s Lutheran Mission This morning I watched a segment on Canada AM that offered suggestions for good summer reading. I love using some of this season for reading. The slower pace of life in summer lends itself well to quieter, more reflective activities like reading. In this article, I’d like to tell you about two books that you might enjoy reading this summer.

My first choice is not a new book, but one that received renewed attention this spring with the release of the movie The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.

The movie is based on the second in a series of fantasy stories written for children and youth in the 1960s by C.S. Lewis. Lewis became in a believer in Jesus as an adult and wrote this series of stories to express his faith in a creative way. He tells of a world parallel to our own called Narnia, a world created by a great lion named Aslan (the Narnian equivalent of Jesus) and visited

by English children summoned by him to help the Narnians through a number of struggles. Each story

is rich in allusions to life in our world, inviting us to compare life in Narnia with our own. The theme of Prince Caspian is the struggle to trust and follow God in the midst of life’s difficulties. It deals honestly with the doubts that challenge those who believe in Jesus, encouraging us to remember the record of God’s past blessings and the promises of the Bible when going through times when He seems far removed from us.

The story is short compared to many of today’s fantasy stories, yet its characters are well drawn and the story is filled with surprise and delightful humour. If you’ve seen the movie, you will find that the book adds colour and depth to parts of the movie that were portrayed in the broad strokes of the action genre.

My next suggestion is also the second in a series of books, the newest creation of Anne Rice. Best known for her many stories of the supernatural, Rice has returned to the Roman Catholic faith of her youth and, inspired by her renewed faith, has embarked on an ambitious plan to write novels of the life of Jesus.

The Road to Cana is her newest offering. It takes place in the days leading up to Jesus’s baptism and the beginning of his ministry. Rice uses extensive historical research to vividly imagine life in 1st-century Palestine.

Readers may be surprised that these stories are told with Jesus himself as the narrator, but I find that by telling her story from Christ’s point of view, she invites us to take Jesus more seriously both as a man and as God. I look forward to the next in this series.
