JUMBO DAY HIKE RALLY—Organizers estimate more that 140 people climbed up to Jumbo Pass Hut for the Day Hike Rally against the proposed Jumbo Glacier Resort on Sunday. The event, organized by wilderness conservation group Wildsight, was to be joined by another 120 West Kootenay hikers approaching from Glacier Creek, but the road was impassable, said event organizer Dave Quinn. The gathering, he said, was intended to draw attention to the province’s latest grizzly bear population estimates in the vicinity of the proposed resort. “Over 250 people came out on short notice in response to a few emails and posters. The opposition to the proposed resort is only growing, and support for the province to make a NO decision on Jumbo is overwhelming,” he said.

The fight against Jumbo heats up, as the proposed resort cruises toward approval

By Brian Geis Pioneer Staff With the target date for a signed master development agreement just weeks away, opposition is surging again against the proposed Jumbo Glacier Resort.

Re-energized in their fight against the $700-million resort by a sleeper study that found the grizzly bear is close to a “threatened species” status in that area, Jumbo opponents are also enjoying the support of a major celebrity spokesman, hockey player Scott Niedermayer of Cranbrook.

Last week, though, in a move described as good business practice, the provincial government put R. K. Heli-ski chief executive Tom Brinkerhoff on notice that if he wants to continue to do business in Jumbo, he will have to start paying rent to Jumbo Glacier Resorts owner Oberto Oberti.

In a press release issue four days later, Mr. Brinkerhoff—who co-owns R. K. Heli-ski with fellow Alberta oil barons Hank Swartout and George Gosbee—said the company has reached an agreement with Jumbo Glacier Resorts to continue their heli-skiing activities in and around the Jumbo Valley.

R. K. Heli-ski—a 37-year-old heli-skiing company based in Panorama with 60 employees during peak season—is well-entrenched in the Jumbo Valley with gladed ski runs on both sides, fuelling depots and multiple landing sites.

Last week’s letter from Peter Walter, Executive Director of the Tourism and Resort Development Division of the Ministry of Tourism, Sport and the Arts, warned Mr. Brinkerhoff that, after the resort master development agreement is signed, R. K.’s 350,000acre license of occupation will be amended to remove the portion which falls within Jumbo Glacier Resort’s 15,000-acre controlled recreation area.

R. K. Heli-ski fought the resort for years on the grounds that it robs them of half of their best, mostski-able terrain. This spring, R. K. lost the appeal of the lawsuit it filed over the loss of its tenure.

In his follow-up press release, Mr. Brinkerhoff said: “I have met with a representative of Jumbo Glacier Resort and they pledged their full cooperation in accommodating the operations of our business on a go-forward basis after the signing of the master development agreement.”

In fact, Jumbo Glacier Resorts is bound by terms

contained in the master development agreement to make room for R. K. Heli-ski.

“Glacier Resorts Ltd. has made a number of commitments to R. K. through the Environmental Assessment Certificate,” Glacier Resorts Vice-president Grant Costello commented, “which includes offering R. K. the opportunity to continue operating inside (Jumbo boundaries), subject to safety and reasonable management precautions.”

Both parties are expecting a phased reduction of R. K. Heli-ski operations within the Jumbo Resort boundaries as development of the resort progresses over the next few years.

A similar version of the letter, Mr. Costello said, was sent to the Calgary Olympic Development Association, which operates Camp Green, a high-performance training facility on Farnham Glacier.

R. K. Heli-ski Director of Operations Rod Gibbons said that after 20 years of debate, letters are the first signs of changes on the ground. “We’ve always hoped that Jumbo wouldn’t go through. We put all our energy into stopping it,” he said.

Premier Campbell reacts to public outcry against cutting rural seats

By Brian Geis Pioneer Staff Due to a public outcry, the Kootenays might get to keep its fourth MLA if new legislation to be introduced this fall succeeds.

Citing widespread disapproval of the Electoral Boundaries Commission’s proposal to reduce the number of MLAs representing rural districts in B. C., Premier Gordon Campbell sent a letter to Speaker of the Legislature Bill Barisoff informing him that his government intends to introduce legislation aimed at preserving the number of rural MLAs in the legislature.

“Since the commission released its initial report, we have heard clearly from British Columbians that reducing the rural British Columbians’ representation in government is unacceptable,” Mr. Campbell said.

“We are committed to protecting the number of electoral districts in rural British Columbia.”

Under the plan, the KootenayBoundary riding would be completely absorbed by adjacent ridings and the current Columbia-Revelstoke riding would be expanded to extend all the way to the U.S. border in the south. The North and Cariboo-Thompson regions would also lose MLAs, while fastergrowing regions in the Lower Mainland would gain additional MLAs. Politicians in the rural districts responded with outrage. NDP MLAs Katrine Conroy (Kootenay-Boundary) and Norm Macdonald (Columbia-Rev-

elstoke) both opposed the plan.

East Kootenay MLA Bill Bennett (Liberal) said: “I do not agree with reducing the number of seats anywhere in rural B.C. The majority of B.C.’s wealth comes from the 250 Area Code. So what we are heading towards is a situation where the resources are extracted and wealth generated in one area of B. C. (rural), while the political power resides in a different area (urban). So how can rural B. C. determine how this resource extraction takes place if they have lost their political power in Victoria? I am opposed to the lost of any rural seats.”

In reaction to the announcement, The B.C. Electoral Boundaries Commission, the three-member panel charged with drafting the plan, cancelled all the public hearings they had planned for the fall.

According to Premier Campbell, the government intends to introduce legislation this fall that will give the commission the legal tools required to protect rural representation.

The legislation, he said, will establish special designations for the North, Cariboo-Thompson and ColumbiaKootenay using the boundaries already established by the commission after their first round of hearings. At the same time, the commission will be given the legal requirement to increase the number of seats in growing regions of the province by five.

The net effect of the legislation would be an increase of eight MLAs for a total of 87 members in the next parliament, he said.

Three ballots coming up

By Elinor Florence Pioneer Staff Valley voters will have the chance to exercise their democratic rights on three separate topics this fall.

Although the proposed region-wide Jumbo referendum is not forthcoming, Area F taxpayers will at least be able to register their opinion, yes or no, regarding the proposed resort.

There are about 1,629 registered voters in Area F, which reaches from the edge of Invermere to Canal Flats and includes Panorama and the area that is the subject of so much debate, presently uninhabited.

Director Lillian Rose forced the issue against the wishes of several regional district directors who say it is a waste of time. The province says point-blank that no further public comment will be entered into the official record. Obviously many people still want to have their say, and we will find out how many and what they think after the votes are counted. The time frame has not yet been established.

The broadband issue was just as hot as Jumbo for a while, and the two sides broke down on somewhat unpredictable lines. Locals, by and large, appear to want broadband because they believe it will give them increased access to a lot of services which are not available - many residents can’t even get high-speed internet where they live - while others foresee new developments on the horizon which broadband will allow them to enjoy.

Opponents are either satisfied with the service they have, or believe that something better than broadband might come along at a lower cost to the taxpayer.

Or they just don’t like government getting involved in what they think should be private industry. Either way, you can cast your vote on October 27th.

The third vote is a lot less controversial - whether taxpayers want to help pay for a daily bus service up and down the valley from Golden to Cranbrook. The Columbia Valley Transit referendum will take place on October 27th.

Politician earns praise Dear Editor: Lillian Rose, Electoral Area F director of the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK), has presented the views of her constituents to the RDEK board on more than one occasion since she has taken office. Lillian Rose has my admiration and respect for representing the people she serves.

Lillian does have the right to support her electorate, and she is supporting and representing the people who elected her.

Lillian Rose has shown courage, strength, and determination to stand up and speak out, even when confronted by the RDEK board of directors.

Lillian Rose is the Director of Electoral Area F, which is not within my area. However I can only hope that my representative carries forth my views and serves me as well.

Jumbo Resort not a ‘done deal’ Dear Editor: Some people may be getting weary of the Jumbo issue. Some people think that it is a “done deal,” but it’s not. As long as there is hope to halt this development, it is important to continue to make the effort.

How many people wish more could have been done to stop the building of the condos in the sensitive wetlands in Athalmere? It’s too late now for that, but it’s not too late to save Jumbo.

Certain recent developments may, and should, have an influence on the final decision.

It seems from the last meeting of the Regional District of East Kootenay, that Lillian Rose will be able to conduct an opinion poll in Area F. This will be a non-binding poll, but if the results show a clear opposition, it would be difficult for Premier Campbell to completely ignore it since in a democracy decisions should represent the wishes of the local people.

In addition, the latest survey of the grizzly bears in the Central Purcells shows a much lower population than the previous studies.

Provincial files estimate that grizzly bear population in the Central Purcell was at 93 percent of its potential and assume that bears could withstand the

impact of the Jumbo resort.

However the new data shows it to be 54 percent, a level approaching a “species at risk” status.

Since the results by Dr. Michael Proctor are based on actual bear surveys using a DNA-based method that is now standard across North America, they must be taken seriously.

The costs of recovery and reintroduction are enormous and this cost will be funded by the taxpayer, not the developers. Are we willing to pay for such a program for the benefit of wealthy foreign tourists? Are we willing to sacrifice our natural habitats and wild animals?

The poll outcome and the conclusions of the latest grizzly bear population survey should significantly influence the final decision on the Jumbo Glacier Resort.

Jumbo is not a “done deal.” It’s time to become involved if we wish to save this habitat and its animals in our “Super Natural” province.

Those interested can write a letter to Ida Chong, Minister of Community Services and Tourism, Sports and the Arts (ida.chong.mla@leg.bc.ca) and Premier Gordon Campbell (premier@ gov.bc.ca).

Thank you, Megan Jackson, for standing up and recognizing that this “bear problem” we have can actually be attributed to humans!

Humans are the most selfish, power-thirsty species on this planet and, for some reason, many of us feel the need to eliminate all other species that don’t do exactly what we want.

Reality Check: the bears were here first and they have done a far better job at maintaining their environment than we have ours!

Review: Death Proof Reviewed by Dave Sutherland Death Proof is a Quentin Tarantino movie that was originally released on a double bill with Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror, under the collective title Grindhouse. Grindhouse was Rodriguez and Tarantino’s homage to and parody of cheesy 1970s exploitation flics and came complete with previews for other, so far non-existent, films of the same type.

Death Proof stars Kurt Russell as Stuntman Mike, a muscle-car driving psycho who targets seemingly vulnerable young women. Scar-faced Mike goes on a killing spree with his “death proof ” cars until he meets a trio of luscious lovelies who are tougher than they look.

Although set in the present, Death Proof looks as if it were filmed in the seventies. Tarantino’s love for, and intimate knowledge of exploitation cinema is legendary, and comes through in every scene. The movie’s colour is washed out in many scenes, as if it were filmed on cheap stock, and it comes complete with scratches, stutters and blips, as it would if it were being screened for the umpteenth time through a dirty projector in a two-bit theatre. The film blurs

occasionally, and at one point around the middle of the movie reverts to black and white for a sequence that is almost dream-like. The soundtrack blares a mix of rock and soul from the likes of T-Rex, Joe Tex, and other seventies musical stalwarts. Along with Russell, Death Proof stars Rosario Dawson, Rose McGowan, and Vanessa Ferlito, and Tarantino himself has a cameo as a bartender.

Death Proof is divided between Tarantino’s signature dialogue-heavy scenes, and scenes of astounding car-chase action, along with a couple of scenes of shocking violence. The stunt work in this movie is incredible, with many of the stunts being performed by real-life stunt-woman Zoe Bell, who plays herself. Death Proof references most of the memorable car-chase movies of the seventies, including Vanishing Point, The Getaway, and Gone in Sixty Seconds, but if you ask me, it’s much better, and more stylish, than almost all of them.

Fasten your seatbelts, folks, ‘cause Death Proof is a wild ride.

Pros and cons of joint ownership A key goal of any estate plan is to maximize the amount of wealth that ends up in the hands of beneficiaries. Another important goal is to streamline the distribution of assets, so that wealth is passed on to heirs with minimal hassles and legal complications.

One way to accomplish both these goals is to own assets jointly. If assets are jointly owned with “rights of survivorship,” they can pass from one owner to the other without going through probate, potentially saving thousands of dollars. And because assets owned jointly are automatically passed on to the other owner should one owner die, there are fewer hassles and delays. These two benefits make joint ownership an excellent strategy when passing large assets (the family home, for example) to spouses, and in certain cases, to children.

As attractive as it is, however, there are a few drawbacks to the joint ownership strategy.

Loss of control Joint ownership requires an individual to give up full control of assets once they are transferred into joint ownership. You can’t sell the asset, for example your house, without the other owner’s consent. If you set up a joint investment account you may not be able to control the investment decisions anymore. Depending on the assets in question and the personal relationship between co-owners, this could be the source of future conflict.

Exposure to creditors All assets placed in a joint account may be exposed to creditors of either account holder. Yes, that includes ex-spouses and lawsuits. If you place a house in joint name with your 3 adult children and one child gets sued or into a nasty divorce, a portion of the house may be at risk.

Tax consequences The contributors to a joint account must each recognize a deemed disposition of half the assets each person contributes. From then on, interest income, dividends and capital gains are split evenly between account holders. This is an often-overlooked consequence of joint ownership that may make the strategy more costly than the savings it would generate particularly in an area like the Columbia Valley where real estate has climbed in valley by so much!

Conflict with wills The provisions of joint ownership can sometimes defeat the provisions of a will. Furthermore, this conflict can take away the ability to minimize long-term tax liabilities, like testamentary trusts and other tax planning provisions.

One major conflict with a will is that joint assets do not pass through the will and may not pass through to those intended. For example, an elderly mother may want her house to go to her two adult children equally when she passes away in order to skip probate.

In her will she may have decided that if one of children dies before her she would want half of her house to go directly to the grandchildren or to the surviving spouse of the deceased child.

If the house was already in joint names with both adult children then the house would revert to being owned by only the surviving spouse and the elderly mother if one child passes away. Until she changes her will the house is at risk to going 100 percent to the surviving child if the elderly mother passes away.

After all is said and done, joint ownership still has its benefits. But it demands careful consideration and professional advice.

The 20-year R. K. employee has given something of himself to the cause “Reality is encroaching,” he said.

“It’s a personal issue. It’s an R. K. issue.

But it’s not over until it’s over.”

Environmental watchdog group, Wildsight, got a shot in the arm this week in its fight against the resort from a renewed commitment to their cause by the National Hockey League’s most valuable player and Cranbrook native Scott Niedermayer.

Mr. Niedermayer, whose image has long graced one of Jumbo Creek Conservation Society’s “WildCard” antiJumbo posters, grabbed headlines across the country by stepping to the fore of the cause.

“I have been fortunate to play hockey and travel all over the world,”

Mr. Niedermayer said. “Wilderness and wildlife values are disappearing, due, in part, to development proposals similar to the proposed Jumbo Resort. I am continually amazed we still have them here in the Kootenays.

“I am not only concerned about the loss of wilderness and the negative impacts on wildlife and on the area I call home,” he said. “It’s clear local people feel both their concerns and those of wildlife experts have been consistently ignored.”

Wildsight Spokesman Dave Quinn applauded Niedermayer’s commitment to the cause and said his group will take the fight to local zoning board hearings.

“Scott’s support comes at a critical time,” he said. “Kootenay residents are waiting for the proponent to apply for rezoning of the Jumbo Valley to the local regional district, as was stipulated in the provincial environmental assessment for the project. We anticipate public hearings on one of the most controversial projects ever proposed in the region.

This will allow elected representatives to reflect their constituent’s concerns and bring final resolution to this project.”

Conservancy, tour operator join forces to preserve land The Nature Conservancy of Canada and Canadian Mountain Holidays have joined forces through an innovative sponsorship agreement in support of conservation.

As leaders in their fields of adventure tourism and land conservation respectively, they will work together to promote conservation awareness and collaborate on field projects and research.

This agreement represents the first time the conservancy has established a major sponsorship with a tourism operator.

As part of the agreement, Canadian Mountain Holidays has also committed $75,000 over a three-year period to support the conservancy’s Canadian Rockies Program and activities in the region.

Canadian Mountain Holidays is one of Canada’s oldest adventure travel companies and the most experienced heli-skiing and hiking company in the world. Established in 1965 by mountain guide Hans Gmoser, it has 12 remote operations in the B.C. mountains.

President Walter Bruns says: “CMH has a long history in the mountains of southeastern B.C. dating back to the mid-sixties when Hans Gmoser introduced heli-skiing in the Bugaboos. It is a privilege to operate in these mountains and we take great care to do so in a responsible manner.

WORKING WITH A REALTOR AN EXPLANATION OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN YOU AND A REALTOR® AND OF THE ASSOCIATION COLLECTION, USE AND DISCLOSURE OF PERSONAL INFORMATION Buying, selling or leasing real estate is probably the most important and potentially rewarding financial transaction you’ll make in your life. So it is a good idea to take a moment and consider the kind of relationship you might be entering into with a REALTOR®. The more you know the more satisfied you will be with the results.

REALTORS®, Brokerages and real estate boards need to collect, use and disclose some personal information to help you sell, buy or lease real estate.

THE AGENCY RELATIONSHIP REALTORS® work within a legal relationship called agency. The agency relationship exists between you, the principal, and your Brokerage, the company under which the individual who is representing you, is licensed. The essence of the agency relationship is that the Brokerage has the authority to represent the principal in dealings with others.

Brokerages and their Licensees are legally obligated to protect and promote the interests of their principals as they would their own.

Specifically, the Brokerage has the following duties: 1) Undivided loyalty. The Brokerage must protect the principal’s negotiating position at all times, and disclose all known facts which may affect or influence the principal’s decision.

2) To obey all lawful instructions of the principal.

3) An obligation to keep the confidences of the principal.

4) To exercise reasonable care and skill in performing all assigned duties.

5) To account for all money and property placed in an Brokerage’s hands while acting for the principal.

You can expect competent service from your Brokerage, knowing that the company is bound by ethics and the law to be honest and thorough in representing a property listed for sale or lease. Both buyer/tenant and seller/landlord can be represented by their own Brokerages in a single transaction.

DUAL AGENCY Dual agency occurs when a Brokerage is representing both the buyer/tenant and the seller/landlord in the same transaction. Since the Brokerage has promised a duty of confidentiality, loyalty and full disclosure to both parties simultaneously, it is necessary to limit these duties in this situation, if both parties consent. If you find yourself involved in a dual agency relationship, before making or receiving an offer, both you and the other party will be asked to consent, in writing, to this new limited agency relationship.

This relationship involves the following limitations: a) The Brokerage will deal with the buyer/tenant and the seller/landlord impartially; b) The Brokerage will have a duty of disclosure to both the buyer/tenant and the seller/landlord except that: i) the Brokerage will not disclose that the buyer/tenant is willing to pay a price or agree to terms other than those contained in the offer, or that the seller/landlord is willing to accept a price… or terms other than those contained in the listing; ii) the Brokerage will not disclose the motivation of the buyer/tenant to buy or lease or the seller/landlord to sell or lease unless authorized by the buyer/tenant or the seller/landlord; iii)The Brokerage will not disclose personal information, not otherwise necessarily disclosed in the transaction documentation, about the buyer/tenant or seller/landlord to the other party unless authorized in writing. c) The Brokerage will disclose to the buyer/tenant defects about the physical condition of the property known to the Brokerage.

WHEN THERE IS NO AGENCY RELATIONSHIP You may also choose to use the services of a REALTOR® without having any kind of agency relationship. This might occur, for example, when you are being shown a property by the seller/landlord’s agent.

The REALTOR® you choose to work with in this manner has a legal and ethical duty to provide you with accurate, honest answers to your questions and may provide all these services: • Explain real estate terms and practices • Provided and explain forms used • Assist you in screening and viewing properties • lnform you of lenders and their policies • Identify and estimate costs involved in a transaction • Assist you in establishing your range of affordability • Prepare offers or counter-offers at your direction • Present all offers promptly.

A REALTOR® who is not your agent cannot: • Recommend or suggest a price • lnform you of his/her principal’s top/bottom line • Disclose any confidential information about his/her principal unless otherwise authorized You should not provide a REALTOR® who is not your agent with any information that you would not provide directly to his or her principal.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES AS A BUYER/TENANT OR A SELLER/LANDLORD As a buyer/tenant or a seller/landlord, you should: • Carefully read all documents and understand what you are signing.

• If you need special or expert advice, seek other professionals such as lawyers, notaries, accountants, home inspectors, contractors, engineers and surveyors.

And defenceman Dustin Tim, from Sacramento, California, is a remarkable talent who has the ability to lead the rush or deliver a punishing body check. Four valley players - Reid Mitchell, Brett Bjorkman, Brett McDonald and Patrick Dibb - will provide some local talent on the team. Go, Rockies, go!

Greenpeace defended Dear Editor: Reading Bob Pearce’s letter, which so wholly condemns Greenpeace, I feel compelled to respond.

Where does Mr. Pearce get his information, I wonder?

He makes blanket statements, but not one of them is factual. He states, “most adherents eat meat but do not wish to see an animal die”.

Greenpeace as an organization has never been opposed to killing of animals for meat unless it is done in an unsustainable manner, as was the commercial whaling of the past, or the driftnet fishing of the oceans. Is Mr. Pearce in favor of the extinction of many species of whales, and the destruction of huge swaths of ocean ecosystems? He says, “They build their houses of wood products but stand in the way of forest cutting”.

Greenpeace opposes clear-cutting of old growth forests because many of the plants and animals that live in those forests face extinction and many of the people and cultures who depend on these forests for their way of life are also under threat. There are sustainable methods of harvesting wood and that is what Greenpeace supports. Mr. Pearce states: “They drive their autos to work, consuming petroleum products” (though I know many of us cycle, walk, carpool, or take public transport), “but they decry the exploration for and removal of this product from where it lies”.

Again, he is misinformed. Greenpeace has never campaigned against exploration for fossil fuels, although the organization is a strong promoter of renewable energy, fuel-efficiency and conservation.

Yes, Mr. Pearce, our lives depend on the use of electricity, and Greenpeace has always campaigned against nuclear power because it is an unacceptable risk to the environment and to humanity. Greenpeace opposes coal-fired generating stations, as do all environmental organizations because it is the dirtiest form of energy, contributing hugely to global warming, but Greenpeace has never said “no dams for the storage

of water for hydro-electric power or for irrigation of the crops they eat.” Why is Mr. Pearce condemning an organization that has been campaigning against environmental degradation, exposes environmental criminals, and challenges governments and corporations when they fail to live up to their mandate to safeguard our environment and our future? Greenpeace promotes open, informed debate about society’s environmental choices. The organization uses research, lobbying, and diplomacy to pursue its goals, as well as high-profile, non-violent direct action to raise awareness and public debate. Greenpeace campaigns have resulted in a loooooong list of victories for the environment, including a whaling moratorium in 1982, a UN moratorium on the use of large-scale driftnets in 1989, stopping widespread nuclear testing with the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty in 1995 (though the U.S., and Israel refused to sign), the phasing out of ozone-destroying chemicals in refrigeration, and calling for the elimination of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP’s) including pesticides and PCBs, and cancer-causing dioxins with the Stockholm Convention in 2004, just to name a few.

I would invite all your readers and especially Bob Pearce to go to www.greenpeace.org to inform themselves about the work Greenpeace does to protect the environment and to promote peace. You will see where they spend “the millions of dollars taken in.”

This money is indeed spent on research and development, promoting alternative energy sources, working for disarmament, sustainable agriculture, a toxicfree future, and protecting the world’s ancient forests.

We have only one planet and our survival is intimately connected to the health of this earth. We need to work together with environmental organizations to stop the destruction of that which sustains us.

Watching cartoons and making posters are just two of the occupations that student volunteers enjoy at Columbia House.

Laurie Lesmeister, Activities and Volunteer Coordinator, is looking for young people aged 13 and up - in fact, there is no upper age limit - to help her entertain the residents at the long-term care facility in Invermere.

“I had one little girl who came in to watch cartoons and hold an old lady’s hand for half an hour,” she said. The volunteers might pick flowers for the tables, play card games or push the residents around town in their wheelchairs.

Laurie laughed as she recalled one Rockies hockey player who came in to visit with the residents and ended by re-enacting every game.

“By the time he left, he’d be just sweating!”

Junior volunteering is a long tradition here.

Once they were called Candy Stripers, but that name changed in an effort to include boys as well as girls.

Over the years about 10 to 12 young people volunteered every year, but recently the number has dropped to two or three.

Laurie is anxious to get those numbers up again.

“It’s a great way to earn volunteer hours for high school, or as an entrance requirement for a lot of health care fields,” she says.

Scholarships are also available through the Invermere Health Care Auxiliary, and preference is given to volunteers.

Several former volunteers have gone into the profession, including Trevor Brooks, who is now a doctor; Mike Baker, a biology graduate; Jessica Gagatek, who is studying pharmacy; and her sister Natalie who is also aiming for a medical career.

“Parents, please talk to your children and help me convince them that this is a wonderful opportunity,” she said. “They can come in for a free tour and take a look around before they decide. The hours are usually afternoons and there are no late nights since the residents go to bed early!”

The Invermere campus course starts in January 2008. Many people start their health career in the Resident Care field and later expand their skills with training at the College as a Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse.

Successful grads of the College of the Rockies program can expect to find employment right here in the East Kootenays with either Interior Health or at one of Golden Life Management’s residential care facilities.

Interior Health’s wages start at $17.68/hr for community positions, moving up to $20.94/hr for positions in facilities. Health and Welfare Benefits lead the industry – including medical, dental, extended health, long-term disability and life insurance. Educational opportunities are ongoing.

The fair was an amazing success again this year and all who were involved as volunteers enjoyed every part of it. A huge thank you goes out to everyone who helped.

Gord Askey did a great job as emcee and all the musicians were excellent, keeping us dancing to the bitter end.

All the vendors and crafters were very pleased with their day, and I know that they will be eager to take part again next year.

I can’t start to name all the volunteers but we appreciate all the minutes and hours that everyone donates.

This program, carried out twice yearly, is necessary to maintain the quality of our water supply. Pioneer Briefs New funds available for areas impacted by pine beetles The Community Futures Development Corporation of the South East Region of BC, serving the East Kootenays, is pleased to announce that Western Economic Diversification Canada has launched a Request for Expressions of Interest for the Community Economic Diversification Initiative.

This is a two-year federal contribution program aimed at helping to diversify the economic foundation of forest-dependent communities and contribute to their long-term stability.

Western Economic Diversification Canada will deliver the initiative on behalf of the federal government. The department will invest over $33 million in projects that support economic growth, job creation and future sustainability of communities adversely affected by the widespread beetle infestation.

Community Futures Development Corporations will provide information on the application process, including coaching and mentoring for clients who require assistance with their Expression of Interest.

The Request for Expressions of Interest is the first stage of the application process. For more information on eligibility and application deadlines, please review the completion guide available at: www.wd.gc.ca.

Seven Summits climber to speak Saturday night If you missed Seven Summits mountain climber Dan Griffith’s presentation at the high school earlier this year, Saturday night is your last chance to hear the

tale of how Mr. Griffith climbed the highest peaks on each of the seven continents.

School Board Trustee Jim Jenkinson said Mr. Griffith is the speaker at this year’s Annual General Meeting of the Kootenay Boundary Branch of the BC School Trustees Association at Radium Resort.

“We talked him into making the presentation again and, we just thought, since we had him, let’s open it up to the public and make a fundraiser out of it,” Mr. Jenkinson said.

Mr. Griffith will be speaking in the Palliser Room at 7:30 p.m. The $10 tickets will be made available to the public and all the proceeds will benefit the Friends of Kootenay National Park.

Cranbrook Hospital renovations completed after five years The completion of $32 million in renovations and upgrades at East Kootenay Regional Hospital means fewer patients will have to travel to receive diagnostic imaging services like ultrasounds, Premier Gordon Campbell has announced.

“Today is an exciting day for the 80,000 people who call the East Kootenay region home, and a comforting day for many local patients,” he said on a visit last week. “The revitalized East Kootenay Regional Hospital is a state-of-the-art, modern facility where many more patients will enjoy improved access to topquality health care right here in their community.”

The final phase of construction focused on updating the diagnostic imaging department, which now features new sections for radiology, ultrasound, CT and nuclear medicine, as well as a new reception and patient waiting area.

“The upgrade to our regional hospital will benefit all the residents of our great region, no matter what town they live in,” said East Kootenay MLA Bill Bennett. “When the IHA first announced the reorganization of health-care services in 2002, I know there was a lot of angst around the vision for health care in the East Kootenay. Today, it is very gratifying to see

the extraordinary services people in the East Kootenay have that we had to go to Alberta for five years ago.”

Other upgrades to the hospital include mechanical work in the operating rooms, interior work on the second and third floors and upgrades to the Intensive Care Unit, which now features a new negative pressure room and an upgraded nurse call system.

College of the Rockies upgraded in Cranbrook The province invested $15.4 million in the construction of two new facilities on the main campus in Cranbrook. The college invested an additional $800,000 for a total project value of $16.4 million.

Pinnacle Hall will be home to automotive and heavy duty mechanics programs, while Summit Hall will house nursing laboratories, academic classrooms, a tiered lecture theatre and study space.

An additional $2-million investment has created a second Cranbrook campus. The new Gold Creek campus, which includes five buildings on a four-hectare site, will offer planermill, millwright, electrical, timber framing and first aid programs. More than 200 new students will be accommodated as a result.

Brief traffic delays expected at Sinclair Canyon Construction activity will resume September 24th at the Sinclair Canyon end of the 93 South, at the Iron Tunnel. Construction will take place up to seven days a week, during daylight hours for approximately four weeks. This project will finish the work being done to replace the aged electrical distribution system and related surface work. Work will take place in the vicinity of the Iron Tunnel, between the Hot Springs Pools and McKay Creek Compound.

Motorists travelling through Sinclair Canyon can expect minor delays of up to five minutes, and construction may necessitate single lane alternating traffic and lane closures. The safety of the road crews and our visitors is a priority.

GoGo Sisters going strong Submitted by the Valley GoGo Sisters Our group was formed in October 2006 in order to raise funds for the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

This foundation supports the grandmothers in sub-Saharan Africa who are faced with the daunting and heartbreaking task of raising grandchildren whose parents have succumbed to the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Through fundraising events such as the tea held in February, a percentage of the proceeds from Dan Griffith’s slide show “Seven in Seven” in March, our booth at the Valley Appreciation Day in July and private donations (too numerous to itemize), the 49 members of the Valley GoGo Sisters have raised just on $5,000 for the foundation.

We could not have achieved this without the generous support of everyone up and down the valley. We are most grateful.

The money raised by the foundation goes directly, as promised, to the grassroots.

In the great majority of projects, funds are wired

right to the bank account of a community-based organization.

In a couple of carefully chosen instances, the foundation collaborates with other international and local NGOs (non-governmental organizations).

To put things in perspective: We are told that $352 sent to South Africa will fund a sewing workshop for grandmothers: the sewing machine, the lessons and the supplies and materials needed for a year. The income generated will mean the grandmother can feed the orphans in her care who can then focus on school instead of their hunger.

By April of this year funds had been dispatched by the foundation to over 150 projects in 14 countries: Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia, Rwanda, Lesotho, South Africa, Namibia, Swaziland, Botswana and Mozambique.

The Foundation states that, while no one pretends that this is more than a scratch on the surface of pain in Africa, for those who benefit, it’s worth the world and, in a number of cases, life itself.

• The yellow Pioneer box that used to stand beside the group mailboxes near Laird school in Invermere disappeared over the summer. Unfortunately, it’s the second box that has gone missing, since the Wilmer box was also stolen last spring. We would be grateful to have our boxes returned, no questions asked. • This week we celebrate our third anniversary. Thank you to all our readers and advertisers for keeping us alive and well for another year. I now have new sympathy and admiration for small independent businesses everywhere!

• And it’s been six months since we published our first Columbia Valley Map Book, which means our salespeople will be out soon canvassing the community for advertisements to appear in the 2008 edition.

• Our sympathy goes out to our employee Sarah Turk, whose husband Randy fell off a roof and broke his back this week. Sarah will be off work temporarily while she is with Randy at the Foothills Hospital. Fortunately, it is expected that he will make a full recovery, although it might take a few months.

And in other news . . .

• We would like to extend our sympathy to Donna Chen, the owner of Tim Hortons, who lost her husband recently.

Tony Chen was just 48 years old and he died of a heart attack. Donna said they never regretted their decision to move from Vancouver to Invermere one year ago, and she plans to stay here because she loves the valley.

• Here’s an example of the typical small town story that we love - Nora

Efford of Windermere was sitting in the doctor’s waiting room when she picked up a book about Newfoundland that was sitting on the table and started to read it. The lady sitting next to her said: “I just borrowed that from the Invermere library, but if you would like to read it first, take it - I’ll just call them and have my name changed to your name.” So she did.

• I had several comments last week from empty-nesters whose kids left home to start school in September apparently I’m not the only one who is feeling forlorn. I had to stop moping around the house and complaining about being lonely, as it was getting on my husband’s nerves. “Remember, I’m still here!” he reminded me.

• Does anybody know why there is a white cross at the corner of Johnston Road and Westside Road? Nearby resident Norma Harmsworth said the cross appeared several months ago. Obviously it isn’t marking the site of a traffic accident, but we are thinking perhaps someone lost their pet at this place.

• We have lost one of our doctors in town. Stephen Cord, formerly of Chisel Peak Medical Centre, handed out a letter to his patients blaming the cost of housing on his decision to move back to Toronto. Chisel Peak is actively trying to recruit another doctor to move here.

• Toad’s Hole Café would like to thank all the motorcycle riders and others who came out and donated for the First Annual Toy Run. A special thanks to Monkey’s Uncle Toy Store for their support. All donations will be going to the Christmas Bureau. Join them next year for the second annual toy run!

• Finally, a memorial will be held at the Whitehouse Pub in Windermere on Saturday night for Henri Bergeron, who was kicked in the head by his horse while he was logging near Nipika Lodge.

It is suspected that the horse stumbled across a wasp’s nest. Mr. Bergeron had previously told friends that he planned to retire from logging this year.

Explore the teachings of Islam

By Sandy Ferguson Windermere Valley Shared Ministry Recently one of the big political stories in Canada was the federal government criticizing the Chief Electoral Officer decision to allow Muslim women to vote while wearing the niqab, the full body veil, without revealing their faces.

It’s a fascinating story because of the issues it reveals about the place of the Muslim community in Canada. How far should the government go to respect the rights of members of the Muslim community?

What expectations of integrating into the Canadian life should we place on the Muslim community?

And another aspect of the story that is important was the response of many members of the Muslim community, both male and female. Many supported the stance of the federal government that a woman wearing the niqab must reveal their face when voting.

It is important because it reminds us that we can not judge the Muslim community by the actions of a few, that there is such a diversity of opinion that exists within their community. We are reminded that stereotypes are dangerous.

And so, at the Windermere Valley Shared Ministry, we are hoping to start a journey of exploring the Muslim community and their faith.

We will explore the Muslim faith. What does it mean to follow the path of the prophet Muhammad?

What are the teachings of Islam? What appeal do they have for so many people around the world?

And as in any faith tradition, how are these teachings exploited and used by those who wish to pursue

their own agendas?

And to understand Islam today, we will explore the history of Islam, how and why did this faith began, and why does it continue to be so successful?

And when we explore the history of Islam, we will discover an Islamic civilization that preserved the wisdom of the classical world, when at the same time the medieval Christian world was mired in superstition.

We will discover a world of tolerance: for centuries members of the Jewish community preferred to live in the Muslim world, because they knew that they were safer than in the Christian world.

And as we explore Islam, I hope that we will move beyond the stereotypes we are too familiar with, and discover the diversity of this faith.

For example, did you know that Indonesia has the largest population of Muslims in the world? Or that jihad does not automatically mean an armed struggle against non-Muslims, but can mean a personal struggle to improve oneself?

And we will explore the history of the ChristianMuslim relationship, a troubled relationship from the beginning, when many early Christians converted to Islam, while others feared this new faith.

There is the Muslim expansion which threatened the new Christian nations of the Middle Ages, followed by the Crusades with their attempts to establish Christian kingdoms in the Holy Land by destroying the existing Muslim nations.

And we will explore the present reality where all some of the more extreme Christian and Muslim leaders may intensely dislike each other, but are unified in the dislike of the tolerance of our society.

So if you are interested in finding out more, we would love for you to join us. The course will last four weeks, starting on the 25th of September, with sessions either at noon or 7:30 p.m.
