The Pioneer had its first UFO call last week when a woman who lives between Invermere and Radium reported an unidentified flying object soaring over the valley at 11 p.m. last Sunday. She stepped out into her back yard and happened to catch sight of the object racing across the night sky. The caller reports the object was moving much too quickly for an airplane and had blue and orange lights. She did not wish to be named in case anyone thinks she’s crazy. (Now why would anyone think that?) *** Remember curling up with a great Archie comic when you were a kid? Who can forget the antics of Archie, Veronica, Betty and Jughead? If you still have any Archie’s Digests kicking around in your basement or at the back of your closet, Ray Taft at The Book Cellar in downtown Invermere will pay cash for them, depending on the vintage and the condition. (What we really want to know is: what does Archie see in Veronica, anyway?)

*** Another cougar was spotted near the edge of town this week. Yvonne DuBois, who lives on Johnston Road, got a shock when she saw the animal darting out from underneath her front deck. It’s a little worrisome when you have small kids who love to play outside in this fine spring weather. Conservation officers say they won’t destroy the animals as long as they aren’t bothering anybody.

The town has 57 legal apartments on record. Hal Saunders of Invermere is another landloard who rents five different homes, although none of them are vacant right now. “The season has started earlier this year,” he says. He is getting one or two calls every night, most of them from people who are hoping to move to the valley if they can find a place. He said usually things start getting really busy around the beginning of May. For those who can’t find an apartment or a house, sometimes a motel is the only answer. Tiffany Gulbe, owner of the Lee-Jay Motel in Invermere with husband Dave, said she’s seen a lot of desperate would-be renters pass through their motel. “I think everyone who has ever moved here has ended up living at the motel,” she said. People like to stay at the Lee-Jay because it has kitchen units and that means renters don’t have to eat in restaurants. Although the motel doesn’t encourage longterm rentals, Tiffany says it does allow people to stay for a weekly rate during the winter months when business is a little slower. “We like to help out the people who are moving here,” she said, although that’s more difficult now that the motel is getting busy all year. “In winter we have all the people who are building houses for all the other people who are moving here!” The District of Invermere is encouraging large developers like Octagon, which is still in the preliminary planning stage for a large downtown development, to incorporate staff housing in the plan. The Pioneer just heard a funny story about free enterprise at its finest. Apparently a local guy decided to earn some cash by setting himself up in the washroom of a valley drinking establishment as a washroom attendant. He opened up his suitcase, handed out towels, offered the use of his scented soap and gave the guys a squirt of cologne as they were leaving. The tips were great. *** People who live near the Canadian Martyrs Catholic Church in Invermere were a little startled when they heard the church bells pealing on Tuesday morning. They were being rung by Father Jose, heralding the arrival of the new Pope Benedict XV1. *** The very first day the Valley Fitness Centre advertised Oprah’s Boot Camp, it filled up with 30 women and another 20 went on a waiting list! This is a rigorous diet and exercise program designed to get people fit for spring. (It’s supposed to teach healthy living, but we know it’s all about squeezing into that bathing suit.)

Garbage says something about us By Elinor Florence Pioneer Staff Now that the snow has melted, all the garbage discarded over the winter is rearing its ugly head. When I went for a walk beside Abel Creek this week I took along a garbage bag and started picking up some of the worst items. To distract myself from my mounting disgust towards people who would throw used oil containers into the creek, I began to think about the way garbage reflects a nation’s identity. We’ve had the opportunity to do a fair bit of travelling with our jobs - so we’ve seen a lot of garbage, among other things. Where there is poverty, there is less garbage. We lived for a couple of years in the city of Chihuahua in northern Mexico. When the garbage collectors came to our door each Monday, they would sit on the curb and sort through our garbage cans to make sure they weren’t missing anything. This had a powerful way of raising our consciousness about the things we threw away. On the other hand, the harsh but beautiful desert of northern Mexico is becoming gradually carpeted with thousands, probably millions, of white plastic bags which are of no value to anyone. They dot the dusty landscape like unmelted snowflakes. When we visited a mining camp in northern Siberia, we had to travel for hours by four-wheeldrive truck across the tundra.There was only one so
called road (more like a dry creek bed), no marks of civilization, no infrastructure of any kind - yet as we drove along the banks of one of Russia’s giant rivers that make the Columbia River look like a creek, we were amazed to see hundreds of rubber tires floating down the river, caught up in dead trees and rocks along the banks. Obviously they were being dumped by an industrial plant upstream, possibly thousands of miles away. I guess they’ll stay there for all eternity since there isn’t a living soul to pick them up even if anyone had the means to do so. Some developed countries have a long way to go. Germany has a very sophisticated system of recycling household garbage, and there are even uniformed recycling cops who come to your door and give you a ticket if you haven’t sorted your garbage into the appropriate containers. Even table scraps go
into a special container. Yet this is a nation of people who don’t believe in using Other People’s Stuff! There are no secondhand stores or consignment shops. Everything is replaced regularly by new manufactured goods vehicles, furniture, appliances and clothing. Even slightly-used things are sent straight to the landfill. However, reunification has changed all that. There is now a vast movement of used goods into the former east bloc, since the “Ossies” or east Germans can’t believe their good fortune in being able to score such decent used goods off those crazy, wasteful “Wessies” or West Germans. Every weekend the Ossies drive around in trucks and pick up stuff that’s been left out on the curb. And I’m talking about items like sofas, dining room sets and virtually brand-new washers and dryers! Even North America is no model when it comes to garbage. We spent several months living in a small town in Arizona, about the size of Invermere, and there was no recycling there at all - no bottle depot, nothing. Even Calgary doesn’t have a blue box collection system. Here we’re lucky to have a Thrift Store, a women’s clothing consignment shop and a recycling depot and hopefully everyone makes use of their excellent service. In the meantime, if everyone in the valley - all 9000 of us - picked up one piece of garbage every day for next week that would be 63,000 pieces of garbage off the streets and roads. Think about it.

The concept behind the business: “We strive to build baskets that are useful, have personality and class. The Bentleys moved to Invermere from Vancouver almost two years ago and as many newcomers, they instantly became attached to the valley. “We love this community and hope to spend the rest of our lives here.” The support Alita and Jason have received from local businesses and residents has been great. “We would like to thank all the businesses and people who have supported us. After all, the right home for you is ultimately the one that meets your needs and that you can afford. Start by setting a realistic budget. Determining up front what you can afford will help narrow your search process when it comes to choosing the neighborhood, size and style of your new home. A basic rule of thumb is that your monthly housing costs (mortgage, principal and interest, utility costs and property taxes, etc.) should not exceed 32 percent of your monthly household income before taxes. Your banker or an accredited mortgage broker can also help determine how much financing you qualify for, and can explain the financing options available. For ex-
ample, many first-time buyers are surprised to learn that they can finance up to 95 percent of the purchase price of their new home. It’s often easier to work with a lender whom you know, but it’s just as important to shop around. I advise homebuyers to consider getting their mortgage preapproved by their lender so that they can shop the market with confidence. You’ll save a lot of time and stress if you begin the process with firm financing in hand. The rate you’re quoted can be guaranteed for up to 90 days. OBITUARY Max Helmer Senior passed away peacefully on February 27, 2005 at the age of 85. Max was born in Anhausen, Germany on September 21, 1919. He learned his craft as a stonemason at an early age and achieved the status of a Master Tradesman. He spent his military service during World War Two on his BMW motorcycle as a courier. In 1953 Max boarded a ship destined for Canada and made his way to Radium Hot Springs, B.C. It was in Radium Hot Springs that he was joined two years later by his bride, Franziska, and it was there they stayed and raised their four children. Over the next 50 years, his company grew and evolved into what is now Max Helmer Construction. His talent as a master tradesman can be found in many homes and buildings in the area, as well as throughout the adjacent National Parks and in downtown Invermere. He felt deeply honoured to have had the privilege to build the memorial cenotaph in the town square. Max was an honest, hard-working man dedicated to his family who loved to socialize, who loved his quiet times with his books, his mathematics and history, a man who played the violin and loved to dance. He is enjoying all that now. Max is survived by Franziska, his wife of 50 years, and by his children: Joe (Sue), Max, Tony (Seona) and Louise and 15 very proud grandchildren: Matty, Mikey, Samantha, Max, Nick, Ali, Mary, Henry, Lily, Amanda, Charlie, Greig, Simon, Krysta and Stefan. Max’s funeral was held on March 2, 2005 at St. Joseph’s Church in Radium Hot Springs where he was read to and sung to by his seven youngest grandchildren. Interment followed at the Invermere Cemetery where he was carried to his final resting place by his eight oldest grandchildren. Friends and family joined together for the rest of the afternoon at the Radium Resort for an afternoon of storytelling and visiting. Max was a dedicated dad and husband and we love him and will miss him. He was our Rock.
