Robbers flee into wetlands By Elinor Florence Pioneer Staff Burglar alarm systems foiled a couple of criminals who tried to break into three businesses early Sunday morning, one after another. RCMP Const. Tony Hansen attended a call at the Royal Canadian Legion, where someone had tried to force their way in through a back door. Although they broke the lock, they were unable to get past the wooden security bar and when the alarm sounded, they fled. Laurie Meadows, whose husband Jerry is president of the Legion, said they were called by the alarm company and went to the downtown building. The police arrived about 15 minutes later and together they searched the premises but nothing was found.

The RCMP officer then responded to an alarm at the Lakeside Pub, where he found someone had gained entrance to the building through a basement door. The criminals had not been able to make their way upstairs where the cash registers are kept. Again, nothing was taken. Guido Rochheizen, owner with his wife Helga of the Lakeside, said the perpetrators tried to disable the alarm system by cutting the telephone wire leading into the building but they made a mistake and cut the cable TV connection instead. “When they forced open the basement door, the alarm went off and the alarm company called me at home. I was there within a few minutes but the alarm had already scared them off.” He called the RCMP and together he and Const. Hansen searched the building. There is no connect-

ing door between the basement and the main floor where the cash registers are located, so nothing was taken. As Const. Hansen was leaving, he heard another alarm sounding at the Petro-Canada station in Athalmer. He raced over there just in time to see two males exiting the service station carrying the cash drawers from the cash registers. When they saw the police vehicle, they dropped the cash drawers and fled on foot into the boggy area behind the station. The officer pursued them on foot but lost them in the darkness. He then called for back-up and a dog was brought in to track the criminals; however, they were not found. Please call the RCMP at 342-9292 if you have any information about these crimes.

POUNDING THE PAVEMENT - NDP candidate Norm Macdonald of Golden and his wife Karen visited Invermere this week to meet and greet local residents. The campaign is in full swing with a race between Norm and current MLA Wendy McMahon of the Liberals. Here Norm and Karen chat with Carol Bradshaw, left, owner of the Invermere Pet Shoppe.

Last chance to ski By Pioneer Staff It was a very up-and-down season at the ski hill. But now that the Panorama Ski Resort is closing for the summer, there’s plenty of fresh powder. The hill traditionally closes every year just after the Easter weekend and the school spring break. But the ski hill received 27 centimeters of fresh snow this past week and conditions right now are excellent, according to Eric Ommundsen, Marketing Manager for Panorama Mountain Village. “It should be a good closing

weekend with great snow conditions and plenty of activities,” he said. He said the weather has made it a difficult year, but Panorama was luckier than most resorts in the area and around the country. The Slush Cup and Kokanee Rockin’ Airband Competition will be held on Saturday followed by the Downhill Dummy Race on Sunday. Disc jockey Will Comrie will be on the Great Hall Deck along with live music and BBQs to entertain skiers and guests the entire weekend. A buffet dinner and Glacier Nightclub dance party is scheduled for Saturday evening.

A lot of trusting folks out there were fooled by our computer-altered photograph of a goose masquerading as an underwater sea creature named “Windy” featured in last week’s Pioneer. Photographer Lisa Ede used her computer to erase the goose’s head, making the bird look like a whale’s tail instead. The article was completely fabricated.

Pynelogs completed By Pioneer Staff If only the original owner Lord Randolph Bruce could see it now! After months of hard work, the renovation of Pynelogs is finished. Last weekend about 25 volunteers showed up to help move belongings back into the historic house. Owned by the town of Invermere, the house is leased to the Columbia Valley Arts Council for use as an arts centre. Several meetings are planned in the newlyrenovated arts centre this month, but the grand opening is scheduled for May 13. New windows mimic the style of the old windows, the hardwood floors have been refinished and the rotting logs replaced on the exterior. Here Jami Scheffer, new employee of the arts council, finds just the right spot for an antique spinning wheel.

New gallery space features local artists “We have had great response to our Calling All Artists ad campaign,” says Anne Jardine, Pynelogs Gallery Manager. The spring/summer schedule for the Art Gallery is full with the exception of two, one-week openings still left for hanging art. The gallery also has room for three-dimensional art work during the month of August, so potters and sculptors, please contact Anne Jardine at 347-9860. There are some very special plinths waiting for your pieces! The community would love to share in your work and we know you are out there. As a special note, all artists featured at the gallery will be included in Pynelogs full-colour schedule-of-events brochure to be published and available for the grand re-opening of the arts centre on May 13th. The Pynelogs brochure will also be distributed throughout the valley including key Visitor Information Centres such as area Chamber of Commmerce locations.
