Ice skating bonanza The Columbia Valley Skating Club will be presenting its annual fundraiser ice show on Saturday, March 11th at 3 p.m. at the Eddie Mountain Arena in Invermere.

This year’s theme is “Show Tunes and Musicals”. The show features all of our skaters in the club, from pre-schoolers (the highlight of the show) to our top Starskaters.

All the kids have been working hard to learn their routines and are going to be ready to show you their new skills learned this season. Entrance to the show is $20 for a family, $7 per adult, $5 for seniors/students, and under three years old is free.

Local businesses take steps to combat fentanyl overdoses in the Valley

By Nikki Fredrikson Pioneer Staff Over the past year, the deadly drug fentanyl has been the root cause of many fatal opioid drug overdoses, wreaking havoc over metropolitan cities across the country.

In Surrey, RCMP found a new strain of fentanyl during a December raid. According to Health Canada, that strain of fentanyl had not yet been seen in that jurisdiction.

“These lab results are once again prompting us to warn illicit drug users that it doesn’t matter where you buy your drugs, or who you get them from. The danger is the same, if you’re in the big city or in a small community. I cannot stress that enough — there is no safe haven,” said Assistant Commissioner Jim Gresham, head of the BC RCMP’s Investigative Services and Organized Crime in a press release.

The effects of the drug crisis have been fatal in the East Kootenay region. According to a recent BC Coroners Service report, fentanyl was detected in three of 10 overdose deaths in the East Kootenay in 2016.

The only potentially life-saving treatment for

an opioid overdose is the use of the drug naloxone, the drug that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose. However, the naloxone kits, which are take-home kits containing three doses of naloxone and syringes to inject them, haven’t been readily available in the Valley.

To Morgan Floesser, a community support worker for the Shuswap Band Health Centre, it seemed that getting a hold of naloxone kits was difficult, so she and Shauna Cameron, health director for the band’s health centre, stepped forward to get training with the kits available for the Columbia Valley.

Registering with the BC Centre for Disease Control in September 2016, they now train and give out the naloxone kits to businesses and individuals.

The Shuswap Band Health Centre’s proactive work with the overdose community has not gone unnoticed, as they have been recognized by B.C. Health Minister Terry Lake for their efforts.

“The training is about 45 minutes long; we can only do six people per time. (Those interested) can contact me or Shauna at the Shuswap Band Health Centre. We go over how to recognize an opioid overdose, how to use the kits,” said Ms. Floesser.

During the past week, the Columbia Valley RCMP detachment received about 55 calls for service. The following is a small sample of those calls.

• On Friday, February 24th at about 11:15 a.m., the driver of a car reported that he had struck a deer with his vehicle on Highway 93/95 just north of Juniper Heights. Although the vehicle was rendered inoperable, the deer was much luckier as the driver witnessed it run off into the woods. The driver parked his car on the shoulder and got a ride home from a friend.

• During the very early morning hours of Saturday, February 25th, Columbia Valley RCMP members were on routine patrol in Invermere when they noted a vehicle ahead of them with no taillights illuminated. Members caught up to the vehicle and eventually confronted the driver in an effort to remind him to turn on his lights.

The driver displayed signs of alcohol impairment and admitted to consuming beer prior to operating his vehicle. The members insisted the driver provide samples of his breath in the roadside screening device and the driver complied. As he blew a “fail” and a “warning”, the members decided not to seize the vehicle for three days but they could have. His driver’s licence was seized for 3 days. The vehicle was towed and available for pick-up by a responsible adult the next day.

• On Saturday, February 25th at 10:30 p.m., Columbia Valley members were notified of a report of an argument between a young couple outside a bar in Invermere. RCMP members immediately responded and found the couple outside and quite intoxicated. As the members were speaking to the male, he became very aggressive and uncooperative with the police. The male was arrested for a number of reasons, but in the process of the arrest, the male became physical with the RCMP and actively resisted and eventually began to assault the responding RCMP members. Because the young man was large and being violent with police, one of the members utilized the taser, which was effective enough

for members to restrain him in handcuffs.

The Alberta resident was then taken to the hospital to make sure he was not injured.

He continued this aggressive behaviour with the hospital staff. He was able to be assessed by a doctor at the Invermere Hospital who declared him healthy. The male was then escorted back to the detachment and lodged in cells. He was released the next day on a number of conditions while a number of charges have been recommended to the Prosecutor for follow up.

• On Sunday, February 26th at about 3:15 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of a disturbance at an apartment building in Invermere. The complainant, a resident in the building, reported that it sounded like two males were fighting and, more specifically, one male can be heard hollering the “F” word over and over again. Members quickly attended. Once the RCMP arrived, they found two males playing video games. Apparently one of the roommates takes gaming very seriously and got extremely angry when the outcome of the game did not work out. The members had permission to walk through the residence to make sure everyone was OK; there were no signs of any altercation, just an embarrassingly low score.

The males apologized for the disturbance and promised to be a little more civil while playing in the future.

• The Columbia Valley RCMP, along with many other RCMP units throughout the province, will be targeting Distracted Driving during the month of March.

Using your phone while behind the wheel poses significant danger to everyone. Research indicates that drivers fail to process approximately 50 per cent of the visual information in their driving environment when they are using electronic communication devices. Texting on a phone is often recognized as the riskiest behaviour, but other distractions such as seeking for preferred music or attending to personal grooming can significantly divert a driver’s attention. The penalty is not light as a driver found using a hand-held electronic device while driving may receive a $368 traffic violation ticket. There are also substantial ICBC repercussions when a ticket is issued.

Having a healthy fear of fentanyl

The month of January saw 116 illicit drug overdose deaths in B.C., up almost 40 per cent from the year before. This number averages out to seven deaths every two days in January, and according to the BC Coroners Office, this sharp spike is unequivocally due to fentanyl.

The awareness displayed by local business leaders in training their staff on how to use naloxone kits to rescue someone suffering from a fentanyl overdose is reassuring — and admirable. Acknowledging that the valley is a weekend or holiday getaway for many, and that, for some people, this “getting away from it all” includes the recreational use of illicit drugs, is the first step in preventing tragedy from taking place in the local communities.

January statistics reveal that individuals aged 30 to 39 accounted for 33.6 per cent of these 116 deaths, while ages 40 to 49 accounted for 25.9 per cent.

The statistics go so far as to reveal the days of the week someone is most likely to die of an illicit drug overdose — Saturdays and Sundays — and the gender that is most susceptible — males accounted for 80.2 per cent of January ODs; and even the location — 92.2 per cent of these deaths occurred inside.

What the statistics don’t touch on is the danger these overdose situations pose to other people, not just the victim. Fentanyl is so strong that someone who is exposed to it in a rescue scenario, or even by being in the near vicinity, can accidentally ingest or even absorb it.

In November, a Winnipeg firefighter/paramedic had to be given a shot of naloxone by his colleagues when he started feeling the effects after assisting a possible fentanyl overdose victim. In B.C., officers with the Vancouver Police Department have been treated for overdose symptoms after seizing fentanyl powder. Back in Winnipeg, a nine-month-old child was hospitalized in a critical condition after — what police suspect — he came into contact with fentanyl residue found in his home (CBC, November 2016). Fentanyl is a problem that’s not going away, but through education and action, we can be effective at keeping each other safe.

Radium chalets close to completion

By Nikki Fredrikson Pioneer Staff 1087277 BC Ltd., owners of the Copperhorn Chalets in Radium, have received their development permit allowing them to move forward with completing the buildings. At the Wednesday, February 22nd council meeting, the Radium Hot Springs council unanimously passed the development permit for the six five-plex buildings.

“In this particular case, the development permit has been approved, which will allow them to basically redo and complete the exterior of the buildings. Then they will have to apply for a building permit that will deal with the actual structures of the buildings,” said Mark Read, chief administrative officer for the Village of Radium Hot Springs.

Conservation officers nab alleged elk poacher

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff The Invermere Conservation Officer Service and Akisqnuk First Nation worked together to investigate an alleged elk poaching incident on Akisqnuk land last week, resulting in an Alberta man being charged.

The man will appear in Invermere court later this spring.

The local conservation officers were made aware of a possible poaching incident by the First Nation on Sunday, February 19th.

“We were told that a band resident had heard a gunshot in the early morning, at first light, close to his house. He looked out his window and saw what he thought was an elk dying up on the hillside, and then he saw a man walk up to the elk and then walk back the way he had come up,” Invermere conservation officer Greg Kruger told The Pioneer.

“The witness was concerned, so he called another band member. That member went up on the hillside and did a site check, and found a cow elk that had been shot. He was suspicious about the legality of all this.”

Acting on his suspicions, this second band member called the conservation officers, who co-ordinated with Akisqnuk

band administration.

“We attended. At this point, we had individuals come to claim the elk.

Through our investigation, we determined that it was illegally killed. Our main suspect was an Albertan Non-Status Indian,” said Mr. Kruger. “We seized the elk, guns and other hunting paraphernalia from the Albertan.”

The man was given notice that he will need to return to Invermere in the near future to appear in court for a trial.

“We want to thank the Akisqnuk for their support and co-operation on this file and to let people know that if they see any suspicious activity, to give us a call. We’re happy to investigate these kinds of events; sometimes it turns out to be lawful, other times it is not and we will launch an investigation. If it’s on reserve land, as it was in this case, we will work with the First Nations band to help determine whether or not it was legal,” said Mr. Kruger. “Elk should not be shot at this time of year. Fortunately, we were able to apprehend those we believe responsible in this case.”

The man charged with poaching was described as being a young adult male from Lethbridge. Those who see what they suspect may be poaching should call the Report All Poacher and Polluters (RAPP) hotline at 1-877-952-7277.

Big plans ahead for Pine Ridge development

By James Rose Special to The Pioneer After several years of little activity, the ball is starting to roll again with Statesman Group’s Pine Ridge Mountain and Lakeview Community development (located up behind David Thompson Secondary School).

“Last year, we built and sold the first show home in many years. The new owners will be moving in at the beginning of April,” said Jamie McArthur, a representative of the Calgary-based Statesman Group. “We now have two more show homes underway, and they are expected to be complete this coming spring season.”

Mr. McArthur also noted that there has been some “great interest from prospective buyers.”

Furthermore, last year, work began on the development’s outdoor park, which the company has called “Columbia Valley Family Park”.

“We landscaped and seeded a three-hole training golf course, plus an extra putting green,” said Mr. McArthur. “When the snow melts, we will put the finishing touches on the tee boxes, and the course will be ready for use by late spring.”

Statesman also installed a children’s playground, including a boogie board, and a kids’ zip line.

“In the spring, we’ll be adding pickle ball courts, an outdoor fitness apparatus, and an open field for all sorts of activities.”

All of the amenities included in the Columbia Valley Family Park will be available for the public to enjoy, and not just the residents of the development.

Statesman Group is a 40-year-old, family-ownedand-operated Canadian company with extensive experience in senior living communities and medical centre developments.

“We are tucked away on the mountainside, providing a quiet and pristine setting for those who want that majestic mountain lifestyle, but we are also within walking distance of the schools and downtown Invermere,” said Mr. McArthur. “And now, with the addition of the outdoor park, the grandkids will love to come visit grandma and grandpa.”

Statesman intends to market Pine Ridge to prospective residents as the perfect place for the active family, or active retiree. Offered currently are a couple of different home designs: a chalet-style design (multifamily) and a single detached home design.

“Our chalets are ideal for the person who wants to come out a few times a year to enjoy the wonders of the valley,” said Mr. McArthur.

“These lock-and-leave homes provide the owner the convenience of enjoying all of the comforts of home, but (they) can also travel, and not have to worry about taking care of their home.”

In Statesman’s other developments around Western Canada, many of the development company’s chalet owners (they use similar designs for other developments) rent out their homes throughout the year, making them a great investment property.

For Pine Ridge, Statesman is hoping to start building another 12 chalets in the next 12 to 24 months.

“We also have 110 lots for single family homes,” added Mr. McArthur. “These homes can either be a great second home for some, or a full-time home for those who are ready to get out of the bigger cities.”

As for the development’s timeline going forward, Statesman is actively building and developing today, and will continue to do so as the market demand continues to grow.

“We are hoping to build 15 to 20 homes per year over the next few years,” said Mr. McArthur.

In the meantime, Mr. McArthur pointed out that there are yet more additions to be made this coming spring with regards to the outdoor park.

Jubilee Mountain, a bluegrass folk trio, will be coming to Strand’s Old House Restaurant on March 10th for a performance starting at 7 p.m. The group, which has been playing together for the past 10 years, consists of Glen McRuer on guitar, his wife Kathy Ferguson on double bass and mandolin (they live in Parsons), Will Wardwell (from Harrogate) on guitar and mandolin, and all three on vocals.

Kinsmen Club dedicates three theatre seats All about our

CENTRE The Kinsmen Club of the Windermere Valley is the first service club in the Valley to make a donation to the new CV Centre. This small but dedicated group gave $3,000 to sponsor three of the retractable theatre seats.

Each seat will honour a resident who has made a major contribution to our community. Meisha & The Spanks coming to Shakman’s

By Nikki Fredrikson Pioneer Staff Invermere’s very own Meisha Louie will be returning to the Valley for a performance at Shakman’s Bar and Lounge with her band Meisha & The Spanks tonight (Friday, March 3rd). The band is a two-piece garage rock band based out of Calgary that plays a punky, pop-rock style of music.

“Really excited to be coming home and bringing some rock and roll to a bar. I don’t think there’s been a lot of bar rock and roll shows in the Valley. I’ve been trying to get put there for a bit and I finally talked Shakman’s into it,” said Ms. Louie.

Over the past nine years, the band has worked hard to release four full albums and is set to record another this spring in the United Kingdom.

“We’re keeping up a pretty busy tour schedule, which is exciting, and we just released a new EP, just a couple songs on a seven-inch vinyl, that we worked with a drummer from the Buzzcocks on, and we’ll be going to the UK this spring to work on a full-length album with him,” said Ms. Louie.

Up until now, the band has released underground independent music and is hoping to see this new album reach more charts.

“The last full length that we did, Girls like Wolves, had some pretty good charting and did well on CBC Radio 3. So we’re hoping to do a little bit better with this one, but we’ll be out there spending a week in Brighton with our two producers working on the record,” said Ms. Louie.

She added that by working with these producers they’re hoping that it will help introduce them to an international market.

“They put a lot of music out on film and TV, I’ve been doing vocal session work with them for six years now and some of the songs I’ve done with them have ended up in the Vampire Diaries, Being Human. I heard one of them on Shameless kinda recently, which was pretty cool,” said Ms. Louie.

Meisha & The Spanks’ performance at Shakman’s is part of their self-described “party tour” with rock group All Hands On Jane.

“We’re just heading out to the B.C. mountains and some Alberta towns, posed as like two weekends with a few dates in the middle, but we’ll be able to come home to Calgary for our home base,” said Ms. Louie.

Weekend festivities The RAD Recreation Adapted Society hosted their first annual Polar Bear Plunge on Friday, February 24th on the ice just off Kinsmen Beach and 29 people participated in the plunge, raising $8,000 through pledges for the purchase of new adaptive ski equipment. Freedom to Read Week encourages fundamental right to freedom of expression Removing books from library shelves with which we may disagree is a difficult topic to navigate. Who chooses what is allowed and what should be taken away?

Generally speaking, something offends everyone; if we removed each book that offended someone, we may have some very empty library shelves. But what happens when those books include negative and/or harmful content?

Sunday, February 26th marked the start of the 33rd Freedom to Read Week in Canada. It is a week to celebrate Canadian’s fundamental right to freedom of expression, and to oppose the suppression of writing and the silencing of writers.

Cain and other local trivia Curator’s Corner

By J.D. Jeffery Museum Curator As I was going through some newspaper supplements from the 1970s, I came across an article telling the story of Conrad Kain. Taking into consideration our mountain theme this year and the mention of Mr. Kain last month, I decided to include him in this month’s article so you can understand his contributions to the valley.

Conrad Kain was born in Austria in 1883 and became a qualified guide in the Austrian Tyrol. After coming to Canada, he made many first ascents to peaks in the Purcell Mountains. The Bugaboo Country was one of his favourite areas so much so that his first ascents there were recorded in his diaries. He wrote about his interest in mountaineering and submitted articles to the American Alpine Club; one book that he penned is titled Where the Clouds Can Go. Conrad Kain spent most of his time scaling mountains in summer, and trapping and writing in the winter.

Mount Berland is named after Edward Berland, a guide who was sent by the Hudson Bay Company from Fort Colville to meet Sir George Simpson to relay horses to him on his trip in 1841.

Mount Shanks recognizes the long-time Assistant Surveyor General, Thomas Shanks, who became the Director General of Surveys of Canada. Thomas Shanks was a member of the Palliser expedition that came through the area in the late 1850s; James Palliser had a high regard for the mappers in his party.

Over the years, I have had an interest in where places get their names. Most will get them from local people, but then there are people in prominent positions who have places named after them and may never have been to an area. Mount Harkin honours Commissioner of the National Parks of Canada, James B. Harkin.

Mount Kindersley is named after Robert Kindersley, the Governor of the Hudson’s Bay Company in the early 1920s. Thomas Douglas, Lord Daer and fifth Earl of Selkirk (1771-1820), had both Mount Daer and Mount Selkirk named after him.

“I think the intent is to really work on the exterior and particularly the two south that are closest to the existing units that are there. I think that was even part of the DP requirement to get those buildings finished on the exterior,” said Mr. McKinley.

Still to be completed is the entire interior of these buildings, with only some plumbing and electrical in place currently.

New additions to this project will be the inclusion of a garbage enclosure, more parking stalls, and added landscaping.

“It will be a really good asset for the community, it’s going to look good, it’s great that it’s getting finished. Beyond that I think it’s a great project to add to the community,” said Mr. McKinley.

“Plans for the rec centre include a fullsized hockey rink, Olympic swimming pool, leisure pool, water slide, fitness centre, bistro, lounge, medical facilities, educational theatre, day care, spa, racquet courts, running track, adventure park, and more,” said Mr. McArthur.

“We are actively communicating with various stakeholders, government officials, and community leaders. It’s a hefty endeavour, but we know it will serve the entire Columbia Valley well.”

Invermere’s annual Coffee Fest will be in full swing this weekend, and its marquee event — the Coffee and Tea Expo — is promising to delight coffee and tea lovers from the valley and beyond.

The expo, held at Copper Point Resort, will be packed with some of the country’s best coffee roasters, specialty tea sellers, wholesalers, drinkware makers, coffee and tea equipment dealers, and a few boutique chocolate makers, and is aimed at valley residents and visitors with an interest in hot drinks as well as those more directly involved in the coffee and tea industry.

“It’s going to be amazing. This year there really is a lot going on at the expo,” said Invermere events co-ordinator and Coffee Fest organizer Theresa Wood.

Attendees will be able to taste plenty

of tea, coffee and chocolate, and hobnob with industry insiders.

“It’s the main public event of the festival. There will be cuppings and different lessons on coffee making,” said Ms. Wood. “It’s a casual, relaxed way to try different coffee and just enjoy a morning out. You can ask questions, learn about coffee and tea, and best of all, everything is free.”

Last year, the expo attracted about 200 visitors, and Ms. Wood is expecting even more this time around. The David Thompson Secondary School (DTSS) culinary class will do a bake sale at the expo, with the proceeds going to help the class buy a new bread oven. Kids are welcome at the event, and a colouring station will be set up, allowing parents to park their kids there and then check out the rest of the expo.

Misty River Lodge in Radium receives Traveller’s Choice Award

Outdoor enthusiasts Geoff and Gaby Ingram have spent their travelling days in different travellers’ accommodations around the world. With their passion for travel and outdoor adventure, the pair decided to open their own hostel, Misty River Lodge in Radium Hot Springs, in 1998.

The Ingram’s lodge has received an Eh Canada Traveller’s Choice Award, getting recognized as one of the Top 10 Tourism Businesses in Western Canada.

“It’s a good feeling, a good compliment, it encourages us to keep doing what we’re doing,” said Mrs. Ingram with Mr. Ingram adding, “We were quite pleased, I guess the expression I would use would be tickled pink.”

The award recipients are chosen by travellers who have visited the Eh Canada site

(www.ehcanadatravel.com) and liked what the Misty River Lodge has been posting.

“The travel website allows us to interact with the people that are going to it as well, and we can also add recommendations. We’ve been adding some trail descriptions, we’ve been adding some travel tips and travel stories from our experiences,” said Mrs. Ingram.

For the Mistry River Lodge owners, promoting travel and outdoor exploration has been a focus for them, and the couple hopes this award will help to encourage more travel within the Valley.

“I’d like to see more people travelling and exploring so if this website encourages that sort of thing, and more people to get some adventure... I’m also hoping the exposure on Eh Canada Travel is good for the Columbia Valley in general because it might bring a slightly different demographic up and down the Valley,” said Mr. Ingram.

s obituary s FOSSBERG, DON PHILIP March 24, 1969 February 21, 2017 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Don Philip Fossberg at the age of 47, at Health Sciences Centre, Winnipeg, MB on February 21, 2017.

Don is lovingly remembered by his mother Phyllis, his brother Paul, and niece Emily. Don leaves behind to mourn extended family in Canada and Norway along with many special life-long friends. Don was predeceased by his father, Erik in 2005.

Don was born and raised in Winnipeg. He touched the lives of people across the country and the world through his work and travels. He was a kind, caring, respectful, loving person to everyone he encountered - offering a hug, a shoulder to lean on and a willing, listening ear at every opportunity.

We wish to express our gratitude to Dr. Jacob, as well as the nurses and staff at Health Science’s MICU and GA4 units for the exceptional, professional care extended to Don, and the compassion and support they offered to family and friends.

With profound sorrow, the family of Colin Moll announces his passing on Thursday, February 9, 2017 in Vancouver, BC at 28 years of age.

Colin was born on April 4, 1988 in Invermere, BC. He leaves to mourn his passing his son Parker, father Wesley, mother Zlata, brother Matthew (Robyn) and children Ava and Hudson, and brother Kyle (Nora) and son Carter. A funeral mass for Colin will be celebrated at the Canadian Martyrs Catholic Church in Invermere on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 10 am. A gathering to remember Colin will follow at 11:30 am at David Thompson Secondary School.

“It’s in my blood. I’ve been buying, selling and growing plants for more than 35 years, and writing about it for 22 years. The more I learned about gardening, the more I wanted to learn, and I’m still learning,” he said.

Mr. Cullen owns more than 500 gardening manuals, and has written 22 of his own.

“What really interests me is talking about the ‘why’ of gardening — the underlying reasons of why we do it, and why we should do more of it,” he said. “It’s a wonderful pastime and good therapy. It’s really about so much more than the gardens, and it’s always changing. It’s not the stereotypical middle-aged man in dungarees with a rusty shovel anymore; it’s a lot of new mothers starting backyard gardens to grow their own food for their kids. That’s especially true in the Columbia Valley.”

Mr. Cullen counts local Home Hardware owner Al Miller and his wife Lucy among his friends, has made multiple visits here, and said it’s a great place for gardening.

“There’s always a real keenness about all things green. The Columbia Valley wetlands are a natural treasure and out of them must spring, I believe, a greater interest in the environment and gardening,” he said.

Valley’s midget cross country skiers win big

By Karen Nickurak Toby Creek Nordic Ski Club This past weekend, nine locals skiers participated in the 2017 Teck BC Midget Championships. Held at Telemark Nordic Centre in West Kelowna, over 220 kids participated representing 19 teams from across the province and as far away as Alberta and Washington.

The objectives of the event for age groups born in 2004 through to 2007 include: bringing young skiers together for a memorable and enjoyable weekend of cross country ski competition and fun; meeting the needs of a wide range of skill levels and ski experience; encouraging achievement through team effort; and encouraging good ski technique.

The Toby Creek Nordic Ski Club won the Spirit Award for the team that showed the greatest enthusiasm, best cheer and relay costumes. The boys’ relay team, dressed in soccer attire, called themselves the Flying Soccer Players and the girls donned hula skirts for their Honolulu Pipi costumes.

Among club members, Lenni Stich placed first in classic technique and second in skate, and Brody Gillies won the ski technique award.

The nine participating local athletes included Chris Dehart, Aurora Orchiston, Brodie Gillies, Carly Nickurak, EmmyLou Grieve, Ryan Tamelin, Lenni Stich, Virginia Denchuk, and Maren Gillies, plus team captain Masha Stich. Coaching staff included coach head Ted Bigelow and assistant Darren Tamelin.

Our words have power

By Pastor Trevor Hagan, Lake Windermere Alliance Church When Bernard Baruch was an ambitious young businessman, he asked the wealthy J. P. Morgan to partner with him in a Texas sulfur mining venture.

Geologists had given the project a favorable report, but there was still some risk. Morgan was interested until Baruch said, “You’ve taken bigger gambles than this.”

Morgan glared at him and then replied in an icy tone, “I never gamble.” The word “gambles” had killed the deal. Morgan thought that investing was respectable but that gambling was a sin.

If one word, innocently misspoken, can cost millions, think of how much damage malicious words can cause. They can ruin a person’s reputation and destroy the closest relationships.

James 3:3-6 (NIV):“When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal.

Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by

a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.”

James minced no words in warning about the power of the tongue. He said it’s easier to control a horse, guide a mighty ship, and tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures than to control the tongue (3:3-8).

He called the tongue a “fire” ignited by hell itself (v.6), and “an unruly evil, full of deadly poison” (v.8).

We ought to make it our goal to fill our mouths with good things.

The more our mouths are filled with praise to God and good, kind and encouraging words regarding others, the less space there will be for fiery, poisonous talk.

Someone has developed this acrostic for the word: T-H-I-N-K. Think before you speak.

• K – Is it Kind?

YOUR MONEY What are central banks?

We hear about central banks, such as the Bank of Canada or the Federal Reserve, all the time. But what are they and what is their function?

What are they?

Canadians can’t walk into the Bank of Canada and open an account the way they would with a retail bank.

Instead, central banks serve national governments and depository institutions. There are two major functions of a central bank: to act as lenders of last resort and to make monetary policy decisions.

As a lender of last resort, a central bank may step in to help a retail bank if they fall upon hard times, such as during a financial crisis. While this is a very important role, it’s likely their monetary policy decisions that most people associate with central banks and their influence.

How do they operate?

Both the Bank of Canada and the U.S. Federal Reserve were created to provide extra support during financial downturns. The Bank of Canada was started in 1935 as a result of the Great Depression, and the Federal Reserve was created in 1913, as a result of the 1907 Bankers’ Panic.

Every central bank is structured differently to meet the unique needs of the country it supports. The Governor of the Bank of Canada is Stephen Poloz who, along with Senior Deputy Governor Carolyn Wilkins

and four deputy governors, meet eight times per year to make policy decisions.

These decisions must be agreed upon unanimously before they’re announced to the public.

What do they do?

When the Bank of Canada or Federal Reserve meet, one of the main focuses of their meetings is to determine whether they should raise, lower or maintain interest rates. These interest rate decisions also affect federal lending rates, which are the rates that financial institutions use to borrow amongst themselves. In Canada, we call this the overnight rate, while the U.S. uses the federal funds rate. These interest rates allow central banks to support or delay growth, as needed.

By attempting to manipulate growth, central banks can encourage or discourage inflation to try and achieve an ideal, manageable economic climate.

How do central banks affect me?

As mentioned above, by setting interest rates, central banks have the power to influence, within reason, the general direction of a country’s economy. There are three major ways in which interest rates as determined by the Bank of Canada directly influence Canadians.

Firstly, their decisions affect the interest rates that financial firms charge consumers. When central banks lower interest rates, they make the cost of money cheap-

er. This makes it easier for consumers to borrow more through mortgages and loans, or to make investments.

When they raise interest rates, the cost of borrowing also rises, making it more difficult for people to access and use credit. This is intended to either heat or cool the economy.

Secondly, central bank decisions affect how high or low inflation is. Through interest rate manipulations, central banks can affect inflation levels, which impacts the affordability of goods and services. If goods are cheap, people tend to consume more. The opposite is true for times when prices are high.

Finally, through the above decisions and more, central banks ultimately influence how much money is flowing through the economy and even the stock markets. This affects growth prospects across all equity sectors, the velocity of money, liquidity and overall sustainability. In essence, their decisions affect everyone and every demographic in a given country.

Final thoughts Though central banks have the power to sway the economy in one direction or another, it’s important to remember that they don’t exist in a vacuum. The Bank of Canada doesn’t make decisions based on whims, but rather in response to global financial forces, with a focus on trying to ensure Canada is as well-positioned as possible to thrive in any fiscal climate.
