Hard-earned Kootenay view Local photographer Joe Lucas captured this rarely-seen perspective of Storm Mountain and the Stanley Glacier hike (at the border of Banff National Park and Kootenay National Park) the hard way — by bushwhacking up a no-name peak next to Kootenay National Park’s Marble Canyon. The 1,300-metre ascent was essentially straight up (with all that elevation gained in a mere 4.2 kilometres) and involved more than two and a half hours of battling through thick deadfall. Mr. Lucas estimates he stepped over 200 to 400 trees, and described the hike as “steep and steeper, (with) two and a half inches of snow on the peak. And of course no trail. I doubt more than 10 people have been up this peak in the last 20 years, maybe less. Tough hike (eight and a half hours) and not one I would recommend, but the views were spectacular, made all that much better with the snow-covered peaks.” Storm Mountain is the peak on the left, and the Stanley Glacier hike goes up the valley in the middle (directly behind the footprints of Mr. Lucas in the foreground).

Chamber director says sensible balance must be struck when it comes to minimum wage

By Eric Elliott Pioneer Staff As announced earlier this year, the British Columbia government has taken the first step in increasing the minimum wage in efforts to better reflect the province’s overall economic growth and ensure all workers benefit from B.C.’s thriving job market.

The first planned increase became effective on September 15th of this year, jumping up 40 cents, bringing the general minimum wage up to $10.85 per hour, with the liquor server minimum wage also increasing to $9.60. According to the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training and Responsible for Labour, this new rate includes the 10 cents scheduled for the 2015 Con-

sumer Price Index (CPI), plus an additional 30 cents.

Susan Clovechok, executive director for the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce, said that there needs to be some type of sensible balance between increasing the minimum wage and ensuring it does not affect small business and entry level jobs across the province.

“Absolutely people need to make a good living and need to be paid for the value of the work that they’re providing, there’s no question about that and every business in our community would love to be able to afford to pay their employees hundreds of thousands of dollars a year but it’s just not always doable,” she said, noting that there are few businesses within the valley paying minimum wage.“What we need is a bal-

ance of jobs that pay well, entry level positions, good paying jobs and that’s what will make our community economically resilient.”

While the raise to $10.85 does lift B.C. out of the bottom of the list in terms of minimum wage across the country, it’s still below the national average of $11.25 per hour.

For the BC Federation of Labour (BCFED), this increase will do little to address the province’s problem of poverty and inequality.

“The small raise still means that 500,000 BC workers earn poverty wages—under $15 per hour,” Irene Lanzinger, BCFED president, said in a press release.

School board releases draft of long term facility plan

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff Local Rocky Mountain School District Six recently publicly released a draft version of its long term facility plan, and the public is now able to give input on it, starting with an information meeting next week.

A steering committee comprised of senior school district staff and a consultant have been at work on the plan since January, resulting in the draft that was approved by the local school board at the board’s Tuesday, September 13th meeting.

“Long term facility plans are a requirement of the Ministry of Education.

A school district must have a board-approved plan in place to support requests for capital improvements. A draft plan has been developed with the assistance of a consultant experienced in this type of work,” Rocky Mountain School District Six superintendent Paul Carriere told The Pioneer, adding the board will

now hold public meetings to communicate the plan and give parents and other members of the public the opportunity to provide input.

“The board has the responsibility to finalize the plan later this year and will consider all the information it receives in the process. The plan involves recommendations for changes in all three zones of the School District, in Golden, Invermere and Kimberley,” said Mr. Carriere.

The draft plan is more than 120 pages long and contains sections on current capital asset inventory and school capacities; facility condition and renewal; environmental sustainability; five-year capital plan; population and student enrolment trends; demographics, student enrolment and options for the district’s Golden zone, Windermere zone, and Kimberley zone; alternate programs and learning services; and district wide/district administrative support recommendations, among others.

The public should be aware that hunting within 100 metres of a residence or within 500 metres of a school yard is not only dangerous, but illegal. When the culprit is caught he could be facing several Wildlife Act charges as well as criminal code charges for possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.

• Sometime during the very early morning hours of Monday, September 26th the Invermere Sales and Rental business located at 403 7th Ave, Invermere was broken into. Evidence revealed that a lone male suspect smashed a glass window in the garage door in the basement of the business. If anybody has any information about this crime they are asked to call the RCMP or Crimestoppers.

• Sometime over the course of the last week someone stole four PS4 controllers from the Red Apple store in Invermere, police are working to catch the culprit(s). If anybody has information about this theft, or any other crime they are asked to call the RCMP or Crimestoppers.

When I was a young constable I loved to drive around in my blue and white RCMP cruiser and look for traffic violations so I could pull people over and see what was going on. It was a valuable tool in learning the community and identifying where trouble spots may be later in the night. Early one evening I pulled over some kids heading to a party, they were cordial and polite and without much hesitation I let them go on their way.

As they departed the check stop I made some quick notes and continued on my patrol through downtown. As I drove everybody stopped and looked at me and waved; even cars that were in front of me pulled over, probably to make way for the professional young cop. I smiled and waved back and patrolled at a snail’s pace.

As I looked down to turn to a different radio station I noted that the switch to turn on my red and blue lights was still on. I sheepishly turned them off.

Worst. Parade. Ever.

Columbia Valley RCMP responded to approximately 75 calls for service over the past week. Here are just a few of them: • During the morning of Saturday, September 24th RCMP received two separate complaints involving property crime in Windermere. There was a theft of a truck from a residence located in Windermere. The truck was a green 2005 GMC Sierra — the owner had left his keys inside the vehicle. Inside the truck was an aluminum toolbox, a GPS unit, some hunting knives, three Sirius Satellite radios, a hands-free phone, and an ashtray full of change. It has yet to be recovered.

Subsequent to this, somebody reported that some items were stolen out of a nearby Toyota car in Windermere. The owner had left the Toyota unlocked. No damage was reported but an iPhone 5 charge cord, a Garmin GPS plus holder, and a pair of progressive prescription sunglasses stolen. Police are imploring that you lock your car doors and take any keys with you into your residence. By doing this there is less opportunity for somebody to take your things.

• Early morning of Saturday, September 24th RCMP attended to a complaint in Fairmont. A young couple had gotten into an argument that was fuelled by alcohol. Eventually the argument escalated to the point that one partner used violence on the other and caused injuries. By the time police had arrived the culprit had departed the area. The victim got medical attention and police are now looking for the aggressor.

• During the morning hours of both Saturday, September 24th and Monday, September 26th Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of a bow hunter stalking deer within the townsite of Windermere. A male, dressed in camouflage, appeared to be hunting deer within meters of homes and the school. An integrated approach was taken as police attended and met with the conservation officer. Patrols by both agencies were made in the area but did not turn up anybody.

Peak mountain experience course, the summit of Mt. Goldie. Choosing the third and easily the most difficult of the three was equally as physically demanding as it was rewarding once I reached the summit.

With the cold weather already presenting an uncomfortable environment, dovetailed with the lack of oxygen at higher altitude, reaching the top of the mountain was no easy task.

It took several stops along the way, glancing over my shoulder at the breathtaking terrain that I had already accomplished before I was able to celebrate at the top with my fellow hikers.

One of the unique elements that made this experience special was being able to see Panorama in its natural element without any snow. As somebody who had never been to the mountain before, I haven’t the slightest clue exactly what the mountain looks like with snow on it, available to skiers. Though many on the walk made comments to me about how special it was to see without the snow, I thought it was interesting to be able to picture that image, unfiltered as I look forward to the first snow fall of the year.

Despite the rain and cloudy view from the top, Panorama’s Ridge Walk was an experience I’d recommend to anyone with the chance to do in the future. As another group made their way up the mountain the following Saturday I thought about what their reactions would be as they reached the summit, hoping they received the sunny day they were after.

Even if they didn’t though, I know from experience that it still would have been well worth the climb.

By Eric Elliott Pioneer Staff I’m from Ontario, born and raised. That should be out there in the open before talking about how incredibly breathtaking, inspiring and momentous the feeling is of climbing to the top of a mountain.

To many, the first question they ask is, ‘well how big was the mountain? and I get it, size matters. Mount Swansea is no Everest. But when I reached the summit of Mt. Goldie on the cool morning of September 17th as part of Panorama Mountain Resort’s Ridge Walk, a distance nearly 9,000 ft (2,700 metres) above sea level, I felt a true sense of bliss, a sense of accomplishment that I had reached the highest height of my entire life without jumping aboard a commercial airliner.

To many this isn’t a big deal. To Ontarians who might never get to experience the beauty and tranquility of the Columbia Valley, it’s a massive deal.

When I first heard of Panorama’s Ridge Walk, I thought it would be an entertaining day. “Ride a couple chair lifts, stand up on a mountain and take a few pictures, cool,” I thought.

Instead what I got was a more complete experience.

On a freezing cold September morning I arrived, making my way up the face of the Panorama Mountain via the resort’s chair lifts as the temperature continued to drop as we got higher up on the mountain.

Following the lead of the experienced tour guides from Panorama, hikers had the choice of doing three different hikes: the Goldie Plateau, Goldie Lake, and, of

Seasonal regulations announced

By Eric Elliott Pioneer Staff With the cold air starting to make its way into the homes of British Columbians and winter weather soon following it, the government would like to remind people of several important seasonal regulations. As the evenings get cooler and more British Columbians begin using their fireplaces and woodstoves as a source of heat in their homes, they’re reminded that people who cut, collect or use firewood must ensure that it is harvested legally.

Before any members of the public collect any firewood, they must first obtain a “Free Use Permit for Firewood,” to verify that gathering firewood is allowed in that area and to ensure that they follow local regulations.

Cutting down trees on Crown land without an appropriate permit (or selling of said firewood) is an ongoing concern in British Columbia, the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources said in a press release. This is considered an illegal activity and could result in a violation ticket or fine.

Planning for our children’s future

Like governments, school districts are mandated to provide detailed five year plans and to update these plans every year. Trustees and administration consider demographics, funding allotments, bussing issues and infrastructure deficits and balance this information against their guiding philosophical principles. To use the resources efficiently is no small task.

Cheers for numerous people of Invermere Dear Editor: On Saturday, September 10th we were towing our boat south on 10th Avenue, back to our yard in the Wilder subdivision. A truck behind us (didn’t check the plates) honked wildly. Huh? We stopped and the fellow said “check your trailer wheel” (which had nearly fallen off).

The wheel bearing had disintegrated. Quite the dilemma.

Twenty foot boat on a trailer that is about to lose one of two wheels (not just a flat tire). We jacked it up, while wife Karen walked home and checked with neighbours who recommended Ivan from Kool Country Towing – who came in about 15 minutes, helped us remove the wheel bearing, sent us to NAPA, then to Brad the mechanic

next door. Brad stopped his project to help remove the old bearing and set up the new one to be inserted.

Had we continued driving, certainly the wheel would have fallen off going down the steep hill on 10th Avenue just south of 13th Street – and a major wreck would have occurred. We grew up on farms in Alberta where people always helped people – and the folks in Invermere continue that western tradition. Those of you who helped us – the anonymous honking driver, Mike and Sandi, Ivan and Brad – thank you so very much. You saved us from a serious wreck, and your help and kindness will not be forgotten. Thank you.

Luxor Trail is a huge benefit to the valley Dear Editor: Thanks so much for putting an article in the Pioneer on our trail (the Luxor Trail, mentioned in the September 23rd Pioneer). It’s probably only the ‘old-timers’ here that remember the route being open all the way through, for horses at least.

At present we are working with the Landowners and Shuswap Band to find ways to protect the high ecological and archaeological values at sites along the trail. It’s not quite an all-season trail because of these factors, so some restrictions to some areas of the trail may likely be applied but for the most part it is a sturdy, gravel surface through lovely rangeland and mountain creek valleys.

The ‘missing link’ of the Vermilion/Luxor Trail was actually found with assistance from Cameron Moore and from Gordon Harrison who rode over the trail with respected Canadian Alpine Club Outfitter Bill Harrison.

Since then there have been zero tax dollars spent on restoring the trail, although it would be a great asset to summer and winter access to cross country skiing, biking, horse riding and walking for Edgewater residents and visitors alike. The work of restoration has been done by volunteers and Columbia Basin Trust Youth Link with constant maintenance by Luxor Creek Stables who run guided horse trips up the Vermilions.

We have asked the Greenways Alliance for advice on how to create easements through the private land, and realize this expensive process would need funding from somewhere. But for Edgewater to enjoy access to a greenway, she would have to build it herself.

And this is the job ahead of those of us who remember fondly the 40 kilometres of cross-country trails in the Kirksland and the unrestrained walking, skiing and riding we enjoyed up to the Vermilions.

With understanding that there must be a place for foot-powered recreation too, and respect for the scant topsoil on the Benchland range, we should be able to have a non-destructive recreational and educational resource right here, right now.

Besides accessing the new ‘Luxor Linkage’ of Nature Conservancy of Canada, the trail can bring us closer to the Native Peoples who lived here for hundreds of years, who frequented the trail and doubtless left important sites we have yet to rediscover. These trail-side destinations may reacquaint and educate us with the original inhabitants and their long-enduring ‘settlement pattern.’

For very little money and a lot of understanding, and good will, 20 kilometres of a heritage trade trail could be at our feet again.

The Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre’s mobile education program, AquaVan, presented by BC Hydro, will be visiting Eileen Madson Primary School on Wednesday, October 5th.

“The AquaVan will be delivering fully interactive and immersive educational programming with the goal of inspiring students to make positive changes in aquatic conservation,” said program manager Catriona Wilson.

“Now more than ever, it’s vitally important that we help students make connections to our oceans. The oceans need our help. The AquaVan does that through our live animals and education programming,” added Ms. Wilson. “The team aims to teach students that they can make a difference, that actions they make in their daily lives can have an impact on our oceans and aquatic habitats.”

Among the identified potential options in the Windermere zone is a proposal to convert both Invermere’s Eileen Madson Primary (EMP) school and J.A. Laird Elementary School to kindergarten to Grade 7 schools. Currently most kindergarten to Grade 3 students living in Invermere go to EMP (some go instead to Windermere Elementary School), while most Grade 4 to Grade 7 students living in Invermere go to J.A. Laird. Under the proposal, Invermere would be divided into two catchment areas, with kindergarten to Grade 7 students living south of 13th Street and 14th Street going to Eileen Madson, and those living north of these streets going to J.A. Laird.

But as Mr. Carriere told the Pioneer, such a transition, would likely be at least some years away.

“The plan proposes a facility upgrade/improvement to Eileen Madson which is over capacity and has three portable classrooms, all currently in use. The proposed reconfiguration from one K-3 and one 4-7 school in Invermere to two K-7s is only possible after those improvements are made, and we believe that will not be for a number of years, if the recommendations in the draft plan are approved by the board,” he said. “We already have four K-7 schools in operation

For the Vancouver Aquarium, the impetus for the program was a desire for the organization to take its message of ocean conservation outside the Aquarium walls and to reach as many students as possible in British Columbia and Alberta. “The AquaVan program engages students and may give them that first connection to animals in the ocean leading them down the lifelong path of stewardship of all our aquatic habitats,” said Ms. Wilson.

The information meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 5th at 7 p.m. at the David Thompson Secondary School theatre.

Mr. Carriere said that those unable to attend the meeting are welcome to contact him or Rocky Mountain School District Six operations director Steve Jackson to discuss any aspect of the draft plan.

For Mr. Lanzinger, the problem starts at the top of government. “Premier Clark has done nothing to address B.C.’s inequality crisis,” he said. “The plight of low wage workers just isn’t on her radar. It’s symbolic of what’s wrong with our province. And it defines the choices voters can make in next May’s election.

Iglika Ivanova, economist for the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, said that she supports the point that this increase will not be enough to make a difference. Author of the report “Working Poverty in Metro Vancouver” and “Myths and Facts about the Minimum Wage in B.C.,” she argues that while the increase is better than nothing, the recent 40 cent increase fails BC’s low-wage earners.

“The majority of low-wage workers work full time, and nearly a third have been in the same job for over three years,” she said in a press release.

“We’re not talking about teenagers or casual workers—these are adults struggling to make ends meet

with poverty-level wages in one of the most expensive provinces in Canada.”

Mr. Lanzinger said that the Federation will continue in its efforts to push the government for a higher minimum wage to $15 an hour.

“Our ‘Fight for $15’ campaign is a concrete poverty-reduction strategy to address the widening gap between rich and poor and make life more affordable for many British Columbians,” he said.

“We believe that nobody working a full-time job should live in poverty.”

As part of the second phase of this government’s plan, the minimum wage will get a similar increase next September to at least $11.25 per hour depending on the 2016 CPI. For Ms. Ivanova though, small increases like this won’t be enough.

“Small minimum wage increases—like the one we’re seeing today—only perpetuate working poverty,” she said. “B.C. should join Alberta and the growing number of US cities and states in raising the minimum wage to $15. Anything less is unacceptable for a supposedly ‘prosperous province.’”

Breastfeeding Challenge returns

By James Rose Special to the Pioneer On Saturday October 1st, the second annual worldwide Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge is set to take place at the Invermere Public Library from 10:30 a.m. to noon. This free event is open to the whole family and is part of a challenge to see which geographic area (province, state or territory) has the most breastfeeding babies, as a percentage of the birthrate, “latched on” at 11a.m. local time.

“We are gearing up for another great breastfeeding week here in Canada and we have three breastfeeding challenges planned around the East Kootenay including the Invermere area,” said lactation consultant Daleen Bybee who organizes the Cranbrook event and operates Over The Rainbow Family Services. “The events are coordinated by Interior Health representatives in conjunction with Over The Rainbow Family Services and Breastfeeding Mamas! facilitators.”

The Breastfeeding Mamas! is a peer support group for breastfeeding mothers and those who want to learn more about breastfeeding. The group hosts monthly meetings in addition to the annual challenge. In Invermere, the meetings take place at the Invermere Public Library on the third Wednesday of every month at 10 a.m. “The group also has a vibrant, online network that mothers can access 24/7 on Facebook. They can ask questions, gather information and support other moms along their journey,” said Ms. Bybee.

The Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenges serve as a great way to celebrate breastfeeding and milk-banking.

Last year 144 took place across Canada with more than 8,000 women in total participating. More than a dozen participated in the Invermere event. “The turn out in Invermere was great last year for it being the first year and we expect those numbers to increase.”

The firewood permit is available at www.gov.bc.ca/firewoodpermits for free and allows an individual to collect and transport firewood from eligible Crown land for personal use. The government encourages those purchasing firewood to ask where it was harvested with a record of purchase to assist in the reduction of illegal harvesting of firewood.

In addition to firewood, B.C. motorists are being reminded to make the change to winter tires this week. As of October 1st, B.C. law requires that all ve-

The events and the kind of outreach that peer groups such as the Breastfeeding Mamas! provide comes at a time when breastfeeding rates across Canada, according to Ms. Bybee, continue to be alarming low. The reason they are so low, she says, is because by and large there is a lack of support.

“For example, in the past, mothers typically stayed in the hospital after giving birth for up to one week. Today, a mother will leave the hospital within 24-48 hours.

That has made a huge difference in receiving the much needed support for starting and maintaining a breastfeeding relationship,” said Ms. Bybee. “Families need support along their breastfeeding journey and celebrating Breastfeeding Week is a great way to ‘kick-off’ support around the region for a new year.”

The World Health Organization recommends exclusively breastfeeding for (at least) the first six months after birth and ideally up to two years and beyond. “In 2011 the results of a Stats Canada study showed that in Canada, only about a quarter of mothers were exclusively breastfeeding for six months,” said Ms. Bybee.

“Hosting these types of events is all part of our goal to help increase those numbers because what’s at stake for both mothers and babies is the multitude of health benefits that result from breastfeeding.”

“For babies, the developmental benefits include improved immune, digestive and neurological systems, ideal jaw and tooth development, and a better chance of avoiding Crohn’s and Celiac disease. For mothers, benefits include far better odds of avoiding postpartum depression, weight loss, and the overall balancing of hormones,” said Ms. Bybee.

British Columbia accepts tires displaying the three-peaked mountain or snowflake symbol on the tire, or the M+S (mud and snow) symbol, with at least 3.5 mm tread as winter tires. Some tire manufacturers choose to mark their tires with both designations.

According to the government of B.C.’s website, the use of winter tires is only mandatory on provincial highways. Within the Columbia Valley, these highways include Highway 93, Highway 95 and, once the two join, Highway 93/95. The fine for being caught without proper winter tires on your vehicle along one of these highways is $109 from the RCMP. Those looking for more information are invited to go to the government’s website at www.gov.bc.ca.

Brooklyn duo makes their way to Radium

By Eric Elliott Pioneer Staff Coming off a jam-packed summer tour that took them from New York to Chicago, Mexico and England, Brooklyn soundscape artists TARANA will be making their way to Radium for a show on October 7th at 8 p.m.

For the duo—led by Ravish Momin and complimented by Rick Parker—this will be their first time performing in Radium, but it will not be their only performance of the trip. Their first booking at Edmonton’s prestigious Yardbird Suite initially brought the group to Canada for the upcoming trip but they were looking for a complimentary show to help pay for their return ticket home.

It was then that they got in contact with an old friend, Pat Maiani, who was familiar with both the Radium area and the band. Instead of helping the band find a place in Calgary as Mr. Momin had initially suggested, Mr. Maiani had another idea.

“Forget Calgary,” he said. “Why don’t you head out to the mountains?”

From there, Mr. Maiani contacted Rolf the Woodcarver in Radium, who decided he would host the show on October 7th.

“Rolf ’s parties are famous throughout the valley, but

having world-class New York musicians used to performing in venues like the Kennedy Center play in what has been filmed as one of the ‘World’s Weirdest Homes’ will be a new experience for all,” the band said in their press release.

Originally forming in 2004 in Brooklyn, New York, TARANA has evolved over the years to its current style of music today. Its innovative beats have been described as a combination of acid house, jazz and psych with a smattering of Bollywood. Mr. Momin said their music incorporates a little bit of every style to interest everybody.

“I definitely would say come with an open mind and bring your dancing shoes,” he said. “It’s not what you may have heard in terms of dance music. We’re bringing a very heavy groove element, a lot of fun electronics that we kind of all put together and synthesized into kind of a hybrid electro acoustic mayhem.”

Those looking to purchase tickets for the show are able to do so for the price of $15 at Circle Café in Invermere, Pips Country Store in Edgewater and Higher Ground Coffee in Radium anytime before the show date.

Mr. Maiani said that there aren’t many chances for people in the Valley to experience this type of music, making next Friday’s event a, “can’t miss.”

By Farah Shawaf Pynelogs Cultural Centre Like the flower that bears their name, Dandelions have a sound that moves with a free will, floating wherever it wants and planting its creative seed wherever it lands. Seasoned songwriter and producer Ben Cameron planted the seed and with nurturing love from his musical companion and acupuncturist wife Shilo, and Dandelions have grown. Songwriting mastery tangled deeply within the bewildering chemistry of Ben and Shilo has led to the creation of ‘Free Yourself’, the band’s debut EP. Dandelions will be celebrating the release of their album with a CD release party on Saturday, October 1st from 7 p.m. -11 p.m. at the CPR Lodge.

This powerful and inspiring 10 track album stems from personal experience and was produced with a ‘no sound is off limits’ mantra in mind. The outcome is an album that is rich in sound and emotion. Artym welcomes new artists Submitted by Artym Gallery For the sixth time in 15 years, the Artym Gallery has brought artists to Invermere to paint “en plein air”. This year we welcome back Cameron Bird, Andrew Kiss, Denise Lemaster, Susan Woolgar and are delighted to bring in Neil Patterson for the first time! Plein air painting requires speed, experience and skill. The adventure started a few weeks ago, as a convoy of vehicles full of artists and their supplies left from Invermere taking Westside road to a small fishing spot called Upper Halgrave Lake. Luckily the fog lifted, leaving an ideal sunny day for painting. It’s hard to imagine a more perfect place in earth. The trees changed to their falls colours, the lake an incredible green and a backdrop of mountains with fresh snow on their peaks. The second location was a favourite for the artists. If you have never been to Brisco Falls, you must go!

An unmarked short path takes you down into a thick, dark, damp forest along a small river. The river, red with Kokanee Salmon, leads to the breathtaking Brisco Falls.

At this location the artists took photos and will be doing studio paintings for the show opening.

Out of the forest and heading back to Invermere, they stopped on the gravel road just west of the Brisco mill. At this location they had a perfect view of the valley with the sun setting over the mountain range. A farm house in the distance, pond full of reeds, cattails and birds inspired Ms. Lemaster, Mr. Kiss, Mr. Patterson and Ms. Woolgar to paint the scene to the south, while Mr. Bird (being the odd duck) stood on the other side of the road and painted the farm bales with mountains behind to the north.The next day they decided to drive Highway 93 to the Trans Canada. They chose to stop at two locations that they have been to in the past, Vermillion Crossing and Castle Mountain. After having some bad weather the last few weeks, this day could not have been more perfect. The light was fantastic on these majestic peaks.

Summer has come to an end along with Pynelogs bi-weekly Art Shows. Our wonderful but final show will be up for display until 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 1st. It’s not completely over though, the closing of the gallery signals the beginning of our Love It Live Concert Series and Cinefest Independent Film Series.

Columbia Valley Arts presents the Love It Live Concert Series with six nights of live music. With performances from extraordinary musicians at the top of their game and a variety of musical styles, it’s guaranteed to excite all lovers of live music. The concert

series begins with an incredible live performance from ‘West My Friend’ on October 26th at Pynelogs’ intimate venue. Tickets are $25 each or you can choose three amazing concerts for $60. Concert-goers who are CV Arts members get additional perks; preferred seating and raffles for complimentary future event tickets.

There is also a proposal for school boundaries within the District of Invermere. These new catchment areas would dictate which elementary school students would attend once both Invermere elementary schools offer K-7 classrooms. The proposed boundaries are likely to cause some consternation among parents but let’s remind ourselves that this is a draft proposal only, open to input, and will not be implemented until Eileen Madson is upgraded.

Finally, there is a call to recruit more international students to attend David Thompson Secondary School as it is currently being utilized at 57% capacity.

An information meeting on the plan will be held on Wednesday, October 5th at 7 p.m. at David Thompson Secondary School. You can read the specifics of the proposal at http://www.sd6.bc.ca/docs/governance/FINAL_DRAFT_LTFP_ SEP_8_2016.pdf on pages 58-71.

Contained in the document are specifics in terms of the upgrades that the schools need and a proposal to use both Eileen Madson and JA Laird as K-Grade 7 schools instead of the current use where Madson educates students from Grades K-3 and Laird from Grades 4-7. Currently Eileen Madson is over capacity by 81 students while JA Laird is under capacity and has two vacant classrooms. There are also infrastructure deficits at the schools in Edgewater, Windermere and Canal Flats that need to be considered.

Until capital upgrades are finished, the plan suggests an interim plan whereby Eileen Madson would educate K-2 students with Grade 3 students transitioning to JA Laird.

The plan is clear that converting both Invermere elementary schools to a K-7 student body will not take place until Eileen Madson has received the necessary upgrades which

family as advice on how to handle the pain of grief. We forget that the expert on the grief is actually the person grieving. If work is what is needed, the grieving person will naturally go to work to dose their pain, and that is not a bad thing. When the time comes to be with the pain, they will also naturally know what they need to do. The key is to listen to the inner guidance and not the misconceptions.

Only the griever knows when and how they need to mourn. In choosing to mourn, we move through the dark feelings of sadness, frustration and despair to the other side.

There are many misconceptions of mourning, ideas that have been handed down from generation to generation so we don’t question the wisdom, we simply accept it as truth. Misconceptions are usually born of a truth that is then distorted. Unfortunately these misconceptions often keep those who are grieving stuck in their grief. Learning what is true and what is false can help us move from grief through the mourning process so that we can once again find hope and joy in life.

Like many, I come from a family whose wisdom includes phrases such as, “If you just keep busy, the pain will go away” and “returning to a regular routine is what you need most right now.”

What is true in these statements and what is false? In the early stages of grief we need to dose ourselves with the pain of the loss. Dosing means we don’t dwell on the pain, we engage it in small amounts. Keeping busy is a way, in the early stages, to dose the pain. Unfortunately, instead of using this wisdom in the early stages, we have twisted this wisdom into a way of avoiding the pain of grief all together. Working together to eradicate homelessness

By Tara Woods, Program Co-ordinator Summit Youth Centre On Thanksgiving Weekend, the youth of the Columbia Valley will be coming together to raise awareness about homelessness in Canada.

According to the organization Children without Poverty, more than 35,000 youth are homeless annually in Canada, just over five times the population of the Columbia Valley.

The Summit Youth Centre will be hosting a sleepover event at the community hall on the night of Saturday, October 8th. While at the hall, the youth will experience a shelter-like setting: all sleeping in one large area with supervision, sleeping on the floor, no wifi or devices, simple snacks, etc. There will be games and fun, but also a presentation from some of the youth workers who have experienced homeless-

ness in their younger days.

Leading up to the event, youth are also encouraged to collect pledges for the United Way East Kootenay in support of their programs to prevent poverty and homelessness. There will be prizes for the highest number of funds collected.

Church welcomes Cambodian dancers

By Wendy Badley In 1975, the Cambodian Khmer Rouge forced the evacuation of a Canadian family from Phnom Penh, Cambodia, just weeks before the army captured the city. The Ens family had left the Canadian prairies in 1960. Weeks later their ship arrived in Cambodia, excited to finally begin their missionary career. It was the start of a love affair which carries on to this day. The Ens returned to Canada upon evacuation, but their strong love for Cambodia took them to France to work with Cambodian refugees for many years.

Widowed, Marie Ens returned to Cambodia after the age of 66. Living simply on pension and savings she trusted God to guide her. Marie began working alongside dedicated Cambodian friends, ministering at the military hospital.

Watching up close the aftermath of AIDS and the orphans it was leaving in its wake she knew she had to do something. Thus, a decision was made to purchase land

outside the city where there were already simple brick and thatch houses for families living and dying with AIDS to stay.

Songkrua (Rescue) was born! That was many years ago. Since 2003, Songkrua has expanded to include three rescue centres with more than 100 Cambodians on staff.

They care for hundreds of orphaned children, many families living with AIDS and elderly women in dire need of assistance. Marie and a team of Cambodian Dancers are travelling across western Canada to raise awareness of the Songkrua Rescue Centre. They will be part of Lake Windermere Alliance Church’s 10:30 morning service on Sunday, October 2nd.

The community is invited to join them for a morning of traditional dances by young men and women from the Songkrua Rescue Centres. You will hear firsthand accounts of how God continues to work through this amazing ministry. Marie Ens, founder, will be accompanying the dancers on this tour. Admission is free.

Ways to pass on the family cottage For many Canadians, a family cottage is something to be passed down from generation to generation. And while this is a goal for many families, the best way to go about it can vary depending on a number of circumstances.

If a promissory note is used, be sure to add a provision to your will to forgive the promissory note in the event of your death.

Gifting while Living Some people choose to pass on the family cottage while living. This allows them to also pass on the responsibilities, both financial and otherwise, to their heir(s) which can be a relief, especially if they are no longer using the cottage.

Gifting recreational real estate while living also comes with particular nuances that you must be aware of. For starters, when the asset is gifted, it is deemed to be disposed of for tax purposes. This means that any accrued capital gains on the property would now be subject to taxation, which the person making the gift must be prepared to pay. Additionally, gifting the cottage changes its ownership which means the gifter no longer has control over that asset. In other words, there would be no way to legally prevent the giftee from selling the cottage, or it potentially becoming an exposed asset in the event of a divorce.

If gifting is a person’s preferred option, they can consider stretching the gift over a period of up to five years, using a formal promissory note. This would effectively structure the sale over time, helping to mini-

This can be accomplished in two ways — by naming the heirs directly, who will become co-owners of the asset; or creating a trust that owns the cottage and each heir gets a portion of the trust.

Those who are concerned about the cottage being sold, or being exposed to legal disputes such as bankruptcy, liens and divorce, would likely choose to create a trust. This option comes with added expenses, however, as the trust must be maintained as a separate entity and file its own tax return.

Those who opt not to create a trust can also apply legal manoeuvres to help ensure the longevity of the cottage.

For example, a person’s will could dictate that his or her beneficiaries sign a co-ownership agreement stipulating things such as how joint owners can go about selling their portion of the asset, and who is responsible for the bills and maintenance of the property.

Using Insurance No matter how a gift is structured, once the asset changes ownership, capital gains tax is calculated and becomes payable. Depending on how much tax is payable, and the family’s financial situation, coming up with the cash to cover capital gains tax can be challenging.

To ease the burden, some people purchase life insurance on the life of the cottage owner(s) which would pay out upon his or her death. The proceeds would be used to cover the looming tax liability.

This is done efficiently by making a person’s estate, or cottage trust, the beneficiary of the insurance policy and letting the terms be dictated by his or her will.

Sell the Cottage Of course, if a person’s children do not want the cottage, the owner could simply sell it, pay the capital gains taxes and other amounts owing and gift the remaining cash to their heirs. Though it does not preserve the cottage for future generations, it is the right decision for some families.

Scholarships for College/University students pursuing careers in health related fields The Invermere Health Care Auxiliary, at discretion, will be awarding a scholarship in the amount of $1,500 to a student entering a second or subsequent year of a health program at a recognized post-secondary institution. Preference will be given to students who have attended David Thompson Secondary School, Invermere, B.C. and who have been junior volunteers at the Invermere and District Hospital, Columbia House or other health related fields.

Copper Point chips in for new multi-use centre

With these funds going to helping the arts component of the new centre, Patricia Duffy Atkin, director of the performing arts for the Columbia Valley arts council, said a big change will be noticed.

“This will enable a lot more people to participate and engage in things like the Love at Live series that’s going on at Pynelogs and next year we’ll be able to do it at a larger venue with theatre and speakers and stage and roll down seats to allow more people to participate,” she said.

After two months of fundraising through an after-3 p.m. green fees special, the Copper Point Golf Club presented a cheque for $13,900 to be used for the Columbia Valley’s new planned multi-use centre currently under construction.

“Copper Point is the first local valley business to make a big contribution so it’s great and hopefully gets the ball rolling for other companies to help out as well,” Invermere councillor Justin Atterbury said.

General manager of Copper Point Brian Schaal said he was surprised by the amount of support the donation received in just a short period of time.

My top five picks for spring flowering bulbs

By Mark Cullen Gardening Columnist You see them in the spring and you want them. The earliest flowering plants to emerge from the water logged soil right after the snow melts. First the snow drops smile at you, even while the snow is still on the ground. They are the penguins of all flowers thriving in the cold of mid March. After that all heck breaks loose in gardens across the country. Crocus, dwarf narcissus, botanical tulips and… well, you get the picture.

For spring 2017, that is now. If you don’t plant flower bulbs in the fall they will not bloom in the spring.

If you are anything like me, you plant them with determination that you will remember what bulb was planted where, only to forget the whole exercise entirely. This suits me best of all as the results are not only colourful, fragrant and spectacular but they are a complete surprise. I never feel more pleased with myself.

In my experience not all spring flowering bulbs are created equal. Some flower for a long time, others in profusion and still others are known best for their fragrance.

1. Narcissus. They look like daffodils, in fact daffodils are narcissus (but not all narcissus are daffodils). Some people have blue eyes: you get the point. There are so many narcissus available that I don’t have space here to list them all. That would be wrong anyway, as I like the ones that come back year after year, the bulb-clumps expanding their repertoire each year until there is a symphony of colour. I love narcissus for the following reasons — they arrive earlier than most other flowers; they are completely winter hardy; nuisance squirrels, deer or rabbits do not like them (they are mildly poisonous); many are fragrant and all are suitable for cutting to bring indoors and enjoy on the table.

Passed away September 13, 2016 Vernon, BC

Predeceased by his parents R. Edgar and Edna and siblings: Walter, Metta, Fran and Barb.

Survived by his wife Betty of 60 years; children: Crystal (John), David and Tim; grandchildren: Kyle (Amanda), Eric, Devon and Brian and great grandchildren Matthew and Isabella.

Jim was raised in the Columbia Valley at McMurdo, BC. Received his schooling in Golden and Nanaimo, BC. Started working at Giant Mascot Mines at Spillimacheen, BC. He furthered his education at Comano, BC, moved to Shuswap Falls, then Mica Dam and on to Vernon and Coldstream with BC Hydro until his retirement.

Jim’s enjoyment was woodworking, flying and gardening. He was involved with Scouts and Guides as well as Fire Department at Coldstream.

His greatest love was his family and friends.

Memorial Service was held Saturday, September 17, 2016 at Pleasant Valley Funeral Home.

S OBITUARY S Robert Lynden Duncan June 14, 1947 – September 23rd, 2016 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Bob following a very brief illness with cancer.

He is survived by his wife Coleen; son Rob (Andrea) and daughter Jennifer (Robbie) as well as his grandchildren Dylan, Georgia and Lynden.

Bob was born in Lethbridge, Alberta and was the eldest son of Bob and June Duncan. He had a brother, Dennis.

Bob retired from Safeway at 58 years old and then spent his summers marshaling at Copper Point Golf Course; the job he loved.

Bob loved the mountains and nature all his life and this is where he was drawn. He had wonderful memories of trips to Nepal, China and Tibet.

Bugaboo Spire centennial finale

By Pat Morrow, Chair Conrad Kain Centennial Society Throughout this rain and snow-fraught summer, there have been several creative initiatives to mark the centennial of the first ascent of Bugaboo Spire, one of B.C.’s most iconic peaks.

Only one confirmed team of climbers reached the top on the actual anniversary — August 29th. ACMG (Association of Canadian Mountain Guides) guide Marc Piché (co-author of the climber’s guidebook, The Bugaboos) and three teammates braved the inclement weather that day to nail the century milestone.

Just a week later, Marc was one of four mountain guides to join the Alpine Club of Canada’s celebratory camp from September 8th to 13th at the Conrad Kain Hut, named to honour the Austrian immigrant who led the first ascent of this technically difficult spire and 14 other mountains in the Purcells and Rockies in the summer of 1916.

Thirty-five representatives of the Alpine Club of Canada (ACC), the New Zealand Alpine Club, the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides, the Conrad Kain Centennial Society and BC Parks converged on the hut, which has seen almost full capacity all summer.

ACC executive director Lawrence White observed that, “The diversity of groups and individuals involved in celebrating Kain’s accomplishment is a testament to his legacy and impact on Canada’s mountain culture. People of all ages from five to 85 came together to celebrate a truly historic landmark; it’s a fantastic story.”

The ACC also hosted five alumni from the Conrad Kain Centennial Society’s Bugaboos Teens climbing program. From the CKCS’s point of view, this was the perfect opportunity for a handful of its alumni, dating back to the first climbing camp in 2009, to have another chance to try for the summit of Bugaboo Spire.

In previous years, including this July, we have managed to lead youths from the Kootenay/Columbia region to the tops of several of the minor peaks, but Bugaboo Spire has eluded us due to poor weather conditions.

The weather this autumn was no exception. An early snowstorm plastered all of our rock climbing objectives, but our guides were still able to take us on roped adventures across the Bugaboo and Vowell glaciers and to the tops of Hounds Tooth and Eastpost Spire in A CENTURY OF ADVENTURE — Mountain guide Marco Delesalle glances through marginal conditions. the window at the Kain Hut, with Snowpatch Spire in the background.

the chance to hear wild-eyed yarns from climbers and guides who are intimately familiar with the granite spires that Conrad and his companions first explored on foot and horseback.

Philosophically, not reaching your goal can provide almost greater rewards. Exploring wild and remote places can foster a profound love of nature and bring purpose and richness to one’s life.

By getting out there, rain or shine, we forge a respect for our small blue planet and are often inspired to raise awareness about its fragility.

Special guests, Canadian Mountain Holiday Bugaboos legends Leo Grillmair, Lloyd “Kiwi” Gallagher and Philippe Delesalle, whose combined ages add up to 250 years of living life to the fullest, and Chic Scott, silvertongued mountain historian and author, provided hours of evening entertainment.

As a fitting finale to the camp, Laurie Schwartz and David Thomson of Banff National Park’s Mountain WIT program staged their ever-popular Conrad Kain play “As Far As I Can Take You”.

Craig Browne, East Kootenay North senior park ranger, was moved to write, “On behalf of BC Parks I would like to thank the ACC for hosting such a great event. Meeting folks, listening to stories, and building stronger relations was truly remarkable.”

Teen alumni Janine Harach had equally kind words: “Thank you ACC and CKCS... it was one of the most amazing things I have done in my life. I had such a great time and it was so cool to meet all the different people.”

September 30, 2016 . . . ‘My top’ from page 24 I have more than 20,000 narcissus planted on my property. I don’t recommend this unless, like me, sanity is not a strong point. But I do recommend that you plant some of the naturalizing varieties, which include Carlton, Jack Snipe, Dick Wilden and the world’s most popular miniature narcissus Tete-aTete. I have them all and love them equally.

2. Hyacinths. Because fragrance should greet each spring. I plant some up near the front door of our house each fall to welcome everyone who enters the house with a blast of sweet hyacinth fragrance.

They grow well in containers as well as in the garden.

I have had great luck with City of Haarlem, Pink Pearl and Delft Blue. The Dutch are very good at growing hyacinths. If you ever get a chance to visit Holland to see the bulbs, I recommend the early half of the blooming season if you like hyacinths. Alas, you will not see many tulips that time of year, but you can’t have it all.

3. Fritillaria. The Crown Imperial fritillaria is so amazing that I classify it as ‘novel’. People who see it in your front garden while they want down your street will wonder what on earth you have planted and your reputation as a great gardener with the magic touch will automatically be elevated. Fritillaria grows to 90 centimetres tall and features large bell shaped flowers with attractive tufts of shiny green leaf bracts above the blooms. The bulb smells a bit skunky, but this is a good thing as they are known to deter moles, voles and other ground dwelling rodents. Plant the bulbs on an angle so that the ‘cup’ on the top of the bulb does not hold water and cause rot. Plant in well drained soil. Otherwise, they are easy to grow!

4. Tulips. Not just any garden variety tulip but the smaller plants with the greatest amount of bloom: multi-headed Botanical Praestans tulips. These tulips appear early in the spring, grow to about 25 to 30 cenitmetres tall, with four to six flowers per stem.

They are inexpensive, showy, one of the varieties is called ‘Toronto’ and I like that as this is where I was born and raised. I have a soft spot for Toronto – the city and the bulb. Look for Fusilier (scarlet red) and Yari (orange/red). I have nothing against the classic Darwin Hybrid tulips or parrot, Kaufmann, Greigii or any other tulip. Bring them on! But for bang for my buck, I like the early flowering botanicals.

5. Alliums. To look at these ‘fireworks’ in the garden you would never guess that they are members of the onion family. They bloom late, usually in late May through June with globe-shaped flowers that stand high above foliage, like a lollipop. Some are small specimens that only grow to 20 or 30 centimetres in height while others sprout up to a meter high.

Don’t be afraid; just believe

By Pastor Wayne Frater Radium Christian Fellowship Church In Luke 8:40-56, and also in Mark 5:21-43, there is a miracle recorded, an only daughter of a man named Jairus is restored to life, the story unfolds as Jesus, thronged by multitudes, has a man fall at His feet and beg Him, pleaded with Him, to come to his house, his only daughter, only 12 years old, was dying.

Mark 5:23 says Jairus “begged Him earnestly” on his knees before Jesus.

Have you ever been there? Desperate? Exhausted with worry? Sick with concern? Maybe you are there now.

Maybe you have health problems, maybe financial problems, maybe your business or your marriage is in trouble.

For Jairus it is his daughter. This isn’t just a daughter, this is “an only daughter”. This is “Daddy’s girl” only 12 and the Word says she lies at the point of death.

As Jesus heads towards Jairus’ house they are met by a messenger, his words are grim, Luke 8:49 NKJ “Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the Teacher.” I can only imagine the grief that must have flooded over Jairus, all hope is gone, his only precious daughter is dead.

I can only imagine what happens next, Jesus, reaching out in love, placing His hand on his shoulder, feeling his pain, knowing that Jairus’ faith has buckled, his only hope dashed.

And Jesus says in verse 50 NKJ ”Do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be made well.” The NLT says it this way“Don’t be afraid, just have faith, and she will be healed.”

And they carry on, Jesus refused to leave Jairus alone with his grief but goes with him. Jairus comes to Jesus on the basis of his own worried, hoping faith, his faith is dashed, “your daughter is dead.” Jesus steps in with His faith.

The rest is history, they arrive at Jairus’ house, Jesus in verse 54 NKJ “took her by the hand and called, saying, “Little girl, arise.” Then her spirit returned, and she arose immediately. Jesus promises us in Hebrews 13:5 NKJ that “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” And the words He told Jairus in Luke 8:50 NKJ “Do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be made well.” Are as real today, as they were then.

Don’t listen to them. Lean on Jesus, trust Jesus.

It isn’t about Jairus, or his daughter, or our problems, it is all about Jesus, if we let Him, like Jairus did, He will take over, when we give out.
