Hatchery fence takes river users by surprise

By Eric Elliott Pioneer Staff A fence put up across the Columbia River in Fairmont caught tubers and kayakers by surprise Monday, inciting questions about why and by whom it was erected.

It was later learned that the Kootenay Trout Hatchery put the fence up across the river as part of a Kootenay Lake enhancement project aimed at enhancing the Kokanee salmon stock in the Kootenay Lake.

The fence first came to the attention of George Greenside, owner of Fairmont Outpost & Outdoors, early Tuesday morning when he alerted the RCMP of its existence.

“There were no signs, which kind of created confusion for everyone,” Columbia Valley RCMP Const.

Francois Mazerolle told The Pioneer. “People thought it might be an illegal fence.”

“I was just very concerned because I had children going down there on the river. If (the hatchery is) going to be doing stuff like that, I have no problem with that, but they should at least have some signage in there indicating why it’s there,” Mr. Greenside said.

RCMP Report Submitted by Cpl. Grant Simpson Columbia Valley RCMP We were a little busier this past week, responding to 96 calls for service. Here is another small sample of some of the calls we responded to throughout the week.

• On Thursday, August 25th, an Alberta male phoned the RCMP to report a single vehicle collision on Highway 93 in the Kootenay National Park. Police attended and met with Parks Canada staff who were already on scene.

A 2009 Ford Focus bearing Manitoba plates was driving north on Highway 93 when it swerved hard to the right, going off road and rolling approximately three times. Park wardens had the driver, a 60-year-old Winnipeg female, in the back of their vehicle at her request so she had somewhere to sit. When police met with her, a strong odour of liquor could be smelled. Park wardens confirmed that she consumed nothing after the collision. In addition to this, the driver confirmed she drank nothing after the crash.

Police read the breath demand and subsequently took two samples of breath utilizing two separate ASDs — both results were a FAIL and shown to the driver. She was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and given a violation ticket for driving without due care and attention. The vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

• On Sunday, August 28th at roughly 2:20 a.m., a 25-year-old Edmonton male called to report a fight outside a local pub in Invermere. The complainant advised that a group of people were fighting and that it was getting out of hand. Police attended and spoke with a 22-year-old local female who explained that she was involved in the incident.

She stated that she had an altercation with out-of-towners at the pub when they pushed her out of the way at the bar while buying drinks. She stated she was elbowed and told “no locals” and this upset her. She then reported the incident to her friends who in turn picked a fight with the three original rude male patrons at the bar. No real physical altercation occurred and all parties were separated by bouncers.

The local girl did not have a good description of the males, but stated they either left in a red or black car. No injuries were reported and there were no further issues.

• On Sunday, August 28th at 11:11 a.m., Columbia Valley RCMP received dispatch of a single vehicle collision involving a moose on Highway 93 in Kootenay National

Park. Police arrived on scene and met with the male driver of the vehicle. He advised that he had been travelling toward Radium in his 2015 Cadillac Escalade when a moose ran in front of him. He advised that it appeared to be running as if it were being chased. He was unable to stop his vehicle and struck the moose. The moose then entered the other lane where it was struck by a second vehicle. The moose was deceased and moved to the side of the road. The driver advised that he did not wish to be assessed by BC Ambulance Service and only complained of having a sore hand. A local towing company attended to remove the vehicle, which had suffered extensive damage. The driver was picked up by his wife who was in the area. The moose carcass was removed

by Parks Canada. The second vehicle involved only received minor damage to the front passenger side.

• On Sunday, August 28th at 6:35 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP were dispatched to a golf course, located in the 4700 block of Springs Drive in Radium Hot Springs, for a complaint of mischief. A 17-year-old Fort Saskatchewan male and his brother rented two sets of clubs and a golf cart to go golfing. The male somehow got hurt while out golfing and came back to the clubhouse to request his money back, but had left the clubs and cart out near the 2nd hole. The male complainant and witness had phoned police after seeing the cart left out near the 2nd hole, with damages to the green and fairway. Staff of the golf course were able to keep the male in the area until police arrived.

His brother, however, had left the area, but came back later. The male was arrested for mischief and was eventually released to his mother, on a Promise to Appear in Provincial Court on November 21st.

• On Sunday, August 28th at 10:11 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP were dispatched to a single vehicle collision, somewhere between Edgewater and Brisco, on Highway 95. A 71-year-old Radium male was driving a 55-yearold Golden female’s 2000 Ford Windstar southbound on Highway 95 when a cow elk ran across the road, from the east to the west in his path. The male was unable to avoid the elk and collided with it, totalling the van. The driver was uninjured, but shaken up. The vehicle had to be towed away by a local towing company. The deceased elk was located down in the ditch. Police did not issue an accident report as the driver had recently purchased the vehicle for a small amount, and will not be making an insurance claim.

Panorama shortlisted for best resort on continent

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff Panorama Mountain Resort has been shortlisted for one of the most prestigious awards in the ski industry.

The local ski hill is one of four resorts to make the shortlist for the 2016 World Snow Awards’ North American resort of the year.

Its Ski and Ride Centre is also one of seven shortlisted in the Awards’ Snowsports School of the Year category.

“We’re incredibly proud to be named among resorts we regard as the best in the business. This nomination is a reflection of work in many areas, but really revolves around our efforts to improve the experience our guest has both on the mountain and in the village,” said Panorama chief executive officer Steve Paccagnan. “More than $10 million has been invested here since 2013 and this has been recognized by the World Snow Awards.

At the same time, our sales team has been very active in international markets such as the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia. In those places, Panorama is now considered as one of the leading resort destinations in North America.”

Panorama media specialist Clarissa Amaro told The Pioneer that the resort has previously been shortlisted for World Snow Awards in categories such as Best Family Resort and Best Up-and-Coming Resort, but this is the first time it’s made the shortlist in the headline

category of Best Resort (there is one award for best European resort and one for best North America resort).

“It really is quite prestigious, and it’s a tremendous honour for us to be shortlisted along with resorts such as Whistler, Tremblant and Breckenridge (the other three on the North American shortlist). Those are all huge resorts, and not too long ago we were fairly unknown on the international stage, so to now be up there with those places is amazing,” said Ms. Amaro.

The World Snow Awards are international in scope and based in the United Kingdom, she said, adding that although there are a few similar awards based in North America, they are all much smaller in scope and the World Snow Awards are hands-down the highest honours in the ski industry.

“It’s the best of the best,” she said.

The Snowsports School Category is new this year and is decided by online voting. The best North American resort and best European resort will be decided by a panel of judges comprised of leading ski industry personalities.

The award winners will be announced on the first day of the Telegraph Ski and Snowboard Show in London on October 27th.

“It’s a big black tie event with hundreds of people; it would be really exciting if we won,” said Ms. Amaro.

Trailbuilder has court case deferred

By Eric Elliott Pioneer Staff On Monday, August 29th at the Invermere Courthouse, Radium resident David Pacey, the man charged with contravening the Canada National Parks Act, had the decision on his case deferred to the next court date of October 11th.

In April, Mr. Pacey was caught by Parks Canada wardens in Kootenay National Park using a Swede

saw to clear trees on the Kindersley Trail without Parks Canada’s knowledge or consent. He was escorted by the wardens down the trail and out of the park.

In the August 19th edition of The Pioneer, Mr. Pacey said he was expecting the case to be deferred to a future date since he is still seeking copies of Parks Canada Trail Guidelines through a Freedom of Information Request.

The Pioneer will be following this case as it advances through the judicial system.

Every day on the world wide web there is news about some travesty somewhere that sparks sadness within us, a feeling of grief when reading about a child dying of neglect or abuse, mistreated animals or countries ravaged by war.

Sometimes that feeling is fleeting; other times we carry it with us throughout our day with a heavy heart as it weighs on our mind. But when loss and tragedy strike closer to home, many of us are not prepared for the spike in intensity in our response to loss, particularly if it’s the loss of someone very close to us, and that’s where the Hospice Society of the Columbia Valley can help.

Though the Hospice Society has been operating in the Columbia Valley since 2012, many people in the valley community are still unaware of the services offered and how accessible the help actually is. To better educate the public, the Society is running a series of seven ads about its Bereavement Program starting in this week’s Pioneer (see page 14). In the September 16th, September 30th and December 16th editions, articles written by Hospice Society executive director Maria Kliavkoff will accompany the ads, delving more deeply into the weekly talking points. Some of the topics covered include the difference between bereavement, grief and mourning; the symptoms of grief; disenfranchised grief (when your loss is not considered legitimate by your community, such as death of a pet, death by suicide and miscarriage just to name a few); and what to say to someone who has suffered a loss.

If you or someone you know wishes to lighten the burden of grief, the Society asks that you give them a call. The Hospice Society’s next 10-week Bereavement Support Group begins on Monday, September 12th from 6 to 7:30 p.m. For more information or to register, please call 250-688-1143.

Parks Canada is in the wrong Dear Editor: Re: “Unauthorized trail builder faces charges” in August 19th Pioneer. It is a sad state of affairs when someone doing good is charged with an offense. Your story regarding David Pacey’s tireless efforts to make official hiking trails safe and enjoyable for all users only to find himself charged with contravening the National Park Act is sad and ridiculous. What is Parks Canada’s concern? That other people might follow David’s example, leaving a multitude of usable trails and Parks’ staff with no work to do? That removing a fallen log might cause a hazard? That fixing that poor section of trail might impair wildlife habitat? Or does Parks Canada dread the shame that would be bestowed on it by visitors observing a citizen taking the lead on something that the government cannot or will not do.

I have know David for many years and I know his dedication and commitment to improving the visitor experience to Kootenay National Park and the Columbia Valley in general. Over that time, I have been dismayed with the constant deterioration and lack of maintenance of the park’s facilities and trails. Yet the article quotes Parks Canada spokesperson Lindsay McPherson as saying: “Parks Canada is a world leader in conservation and takes the protection of the resources under its care... very seriously”.

Help stop habituation Dear Editor: An afternoon trip on Saturday, August 27th to the Athalmer transfer station to drop off recycling turned into a surprise encounter with an adult black bear.

We had pulled in front of the yellow bins and we were about to get out of the car when the bear stepped out from between the bins about five metres away.

We pulled away slowly and drove outside the fenced enclosure. Another person going past stopped and placed a call to the RCMP, which was forwarded to the Conservation Officer. The bear had resumed feeding on garbage at this point. We felt it was best to roll the gates closed to prevent other encounters. The bear then climbed into the bin and retrieved a bag of garbage. It then exited the enclosure with its prize through a hole in the fence behind the bins.

It is sad to think that we were watching a dead bear walking. The conservation officers have the unenviable task of dealing with habituated bears. That meant the recent shooting of nine bears in one week in our neighbouring community of Revelstoke. Before we have a situation where someone is harmed or more bears are destroyed, let’s move quickly to find a solution

Public ignorant to privatization plans Dear Editor: Crown corporations such as Parks Canada, Canada Post, and the CBC are being systematically defunded, mismanaged and intentionally devalued so as to make their privatization publicly palatable. And because Canada has no functioning media, the public doesn’t know about it.

Take Kootenay Park. Demolished then abandoned, nothing done in decades could be considered an improvement. Management took this once-beautiful showcase and transformed it into a garbage dump with a fence around it and a freeway through it. Speed bumps may have been more appropriate. Years ago, the park provided summer jobs for our students keeping our trails safe and clean. Today that could get you arrested.

Pitney Bowes aspires to be the world monopoly in mail delivery — Deepak Chopra was about as high up as you get in the company. He served as president and CEO in many locations worldwide, including Canada, raking in millions.

But he gave all that up when PM Steven Harper appointed him president and CEO of Canada Post. Too bad we don’t punish political crime in this country. The new Trudeau government asked Chopra nicely to step down, but he refuses! Not until he’s gutted Canada Post.

The president and CEO and just about the entire board-of-directors of the CBC, are Conservative Party donors handpicked by Steven Harper. They all share the same goal: kill the CBC. Trudeau won’t even ask that board to resign, because they won’t. Not until CBC blood runs down our streets, or 2020 when their appointments run out. Meanwhile CBC assets, such as headquarters, are being auctioned off now. You may think we elected a new government. But Canada is still being “managed” by appointees from the old government. There is not much “Canadian” about Canada anymore. It’s all been auctioned for personal gain. This must stop.

Passion for pedalling On August 27th, local artist Pat Bavin presented one of his original paintings to Dave Thompson, the lucky winner of a fundraising raffle held by the Columbia Valley Cycling Society (CVCS).

Pat created the painting in 2015 for the Society, which used the artwork as the design on high quality, limited edition shirts that were sold as a very successful fundraiser (Pat is shown wearing one of the shirts).

I don’t know who said this first, but they were right: “The best time to plant a tree was yesterday.”

I say: “The second best time is right now.” Wednesday, September 21st is National Tree Day. Which makes this National Tree Month.

A perfect month to plant a tree! When you plant a tree, you breathe easier, toxins in rain water are filtered through the roots, street noise is minimized, and, if you wait long enough, your grandchildren will have a tree from which to swing a tire.

How to buy a tree Buying a tree is not like buying a sofa.

A sofa is an inanimate object that provides some style and a lot of comfort. A tree is a living thing that you may never sit ON but you may sit UNDER. A sofa is available in a wide range of colours and firmness while trees are available in sizes with a variety of growth habits. After you plant it, you will have to water it. A sofa provides a great environment for watering yourself. A sofa decreases in value the day you bring it home. A tree increases in value from the day that you plant it. My point is that you need to take a special approach when buying a tree. Think about how much space you have for it now, how much you want it to grow in the future, and whether it is strictly ornamental — or do you want fruit?

Once you have all this figured out, venture into a garden retailer where you can get some advice. There are a lot of people out there who enjoy working in the retail garden centre trade for the love of trees (and other plants). Chances are, they are not working

primarily for the money; a bit like sales help in bookstores.

They want to help you make a good choice.

What to look for A tree is the most permanent purchase that you will make for your yard and garden. I advise that you do it thoughtfully. Buy a quality tree that will fulfill your expectations from the day that you bring it home. Here are my Top 5 buying tips: 1. Pull it. If the tree is growing in a container, pull it out (you may need help to do this) and inspect the roots. There should be lots of young, generally white or red roots inside the root mass. If the pot is filled with more than 70 per cent roots, take a pass on it. This tree is root bound and not bound to put down new roots in your yard very readily. Ideally, there is a 50/50 root to soil mass ratio.

2. Grafted? If it is grafted, ensure that the exposure of raw wood on the graft is smaller than a Canadian dime. Look at the base of the trunk for the grafting union (most common on dwarf fruiting trees) and on the top of weeping trees like Weeping Mulberry. An exposed graft is a point of weakness and possibly trouble down the road.

3. Avoid forks. Look for a straight, strong trunk. If the tree is multi-stemmed, like a birch, look for odd-numbered stems as they are more visually pleasing.

4. Avoid sling shots. You know that Y in the road? Avoid it where a new tree is concerned. It is not a question of taking the one less travelled (with a nod to Robert Frost), but rather, none at all. If you own a mature tree with a Y in it, choose the more dominant and straight of the two and remove the other.

Many moves for the library But the space was cramped and, a year later, the Library Board’s goal was “to raise enough funds in the next five years to build a bigger library.” Although they fell short of this goal, the library found a larger space a few years later — the current location of Bishop’s Books. More space was welcome, but it was downstairs and had little natural light.

In 1993, the Board appealed to the District of Invermere (DOI) for land on which to build a new facility. The former RCMP barracks became the home of tre. During its 53-year history, the library occupied at least eight locations. In 1986, after many years in the the library and was opened with a big celebration in community hall and the town office, the library moved 2001. The red brick building, complete with a jail cell, was a big improvement, but soon it was too small.

The Library Board initiated plans in 2006 to raise $75,000 to expand the current location to 6,500 square feet. As CV Arts was also working on a performing arts centre, the two organizations were asked to submit plans for a building that would serve both organizations. However, the proposed facility was not accepted by the DOI council at that time.

When the need for a community centre became apparent in 2013, months of consultations resulted in the library being included in the plan for a multi-use facility. Fruit trees in the Columbia Valley WildSafeBC Andrea Smillie WildSafeBC Co-ordinator Do you have a tree on your property that produces fruit? Utilizing the fruit that grows on our trees and bushes can have several very important results. First, it allows us access to local, healthy produce. Second, it diminishes the chance for wildlife, including bears, to be attracted into an area that will likely result in them becoming “habituated” or “food-conditioned” — a situation that sometimes leads to the animal being destroyed due to the risk it poses to human safety, so you are not doing the bears or other wildlife any favours by letting them access your fruit.

There are a number of edible fruits produced by

trees in the Columbia Valley, from different apple varieties to apricots, plums, pears, and more. It is important to pick fruit when it ripens and clean up all windfall fruit from the ground. Bears have an incredible sense of smell and will travel great distances when they smell ripened fruit.

There are several things you can do to mitigate the potential for attracting wildlife while putting this resource to good use: 1. Use the fruit yourself or share with your neighbours; 2. Donate the fruit to the Columbia Valley Food Bank, located below the Invermere Public Library and open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 to 2 p.m.; 3. Ask to join the “Columbia Valley Fruit Exchange” group on Facebook, a great resource for sharing fruit in our communities; 4. Call Andrea (contact details below) to see if there are any volunteers in your community that would be willing to pick the fruit for you.

If you have a tree that you don’t think is produc-

ing quality or edible fruit for humans, but you are still concerned that it will attract a bear, you can try pruning the tree heavily, spraying blossoms off in the spring so that it doesn’t fruit, or you may even want to remove the tree from your property. There are many native trees that do not produce fruit that could replace your existing fruit tree.

Gardens’ growth celebrated Submitted by Radium Sunrise Rotary August 15th marked the one-year anniversary of the official opening of the Rotary Gardens in Radium. The Gardens, consisting of 40 garden beds and a park with gazebo and benches, was sponsored by the Radium Rotary Club. This attractive community asset continues to grow in popularity and is a must-see destination for tourists and guests of residents.

Past Radium Rotary president and current Garden Committee chair, Dale Shudra, says: “The Rotary Gardens have been a success on many levels. We have enthusiastic gardeners and a waiting list with over 20 names. It is a joy to interact with visitors, some international, and hear their comments. Several have told us they are so impressed that they plan to

investigate starting their own community garden. We also take pride in having hosted two wedding ceremonies.”

The impact of the Gardens was acknowledged by Rotary International in May when the Radium Rotary Club received a Significant Achievement Award for the project. Mr. Shudra says: “It was nice to receive the award, but the real satisfaction is witnessing the continuing popularity of the Gardens.”

To encourage even more visitors to our Gardens, a unique event has been announced. On September 17th (the same day as the Classic Car Show), the Gardens will host an Art and Garden Show. Erla Mottram, a gardener and artist, has organized the event. Plan to attend and enjoy both the beautiful gardens and the works of numerous local artists.

Pilots flock to Fairmont Fly In

By Shawn Jestley Fairmont Hot Springs Airport August 20th and 21st proved what good weather and an exhaustive one-year internal marketing effort can achieve. A total of 52 airplanes and helicopters of various sizes paid a visit for one or both days, for the Fairmont Airport’s 5th Annual Free Fly In. Over 150 people enjoyed a barbecue on Saturday afternoon and a pancake breakfast on Sunday morning.

Other activities included golf, hot springs passes, a sponsors’ prize draw

and donations to the airport’s charity of choice — the Chris Rose Therapy Centre for Autism.

Both days culminated in a campfire with storytellers of varying backgrounds. With pilots both camping on site and staying at the resort, a constant shuttle was provided by our volunteers.

A big thank you is well-deserved to all from the Columbia Valley Airport Society.

All indications are that our 6th Annual Fly In in 2017 will be even bigger and better.

‘Love it Live’ concert series set to roll!

By Tricia Duffy CV Arts Columbia Valley Arts proudly presents six nights of live music, performed by an eclectic mix of artists from across the country, at Invermere’s Pynelogs Cultural Centre.

Over the past few months, the “Love It Live” Committee, for the CV Arts Performing Arts Council, has been working hard to organize a season of six live music concerts that promises to excite all lovers of live music concerts.

One of the main purposes of this committee has been to focus on booking performers at the top of their games who represent as much of a variety of musical styles as possible, with the aim of expanding the live music listening audience in the

Columbia Valley. Within a year, as the Columbia Valley Centre is completed with the inclusion of a theatre, it is hoped there will be many music lovers and listeners who will fill the theatre as live music concerts are booked.

These concerts will all take place in the intimate setting of the Pynelogs Cultural Centre. Individual tickets will cost $25 or, if three tickets are purchased at the same time, the cost will be $20 per ticket (3 for $60). YOUR MONEY Taxes by the number

Just how much does the average Canadian family spend on various taxes each year? 42.4 per cent, according to a new paper published by the Fraser Institute. In fact, the Vancouver-based think tank estimates that the average Canadian family now spends more of its income on taxes than it does on basic necessities such as food, shelter and clothing combined — at 37.6 per cent. That leaves just 20 per cent for discretionary expenses and savings. Here are some of the paper’s highlights, and what you can do to help boost your 20 per cent.

Study highlights According to the Fraser Institute, the average Canadian family earned income of $80,593 and paid total taxes equaling $34,154 in 2015. This figure includes all types of taxes such as income, payroll, property, sales, fuel, liquor, tobacco and auto taxes, as well as import duties.

This is in stark contrast to the amount of taxes paid by families in earlier years. Using data from the Canadian Consumer Tax Index, the average family’s tax bill has increased a whopping 1,939 per cent since 1961, while the Consumer Price Index (CPI) grew by just 706 per cent. Tax obligations have grown much more rapidly than any other single expenditure for the average family, even eclipsing shelter costs which increased 1,425 per cent over the same period. The costs for clothing and food were more in line with the CPI average, at 746 and

645 per cent, respectively.

So how can the average family try to beat the tax man? Here are a few ideas.

Use RRSPs and TFSAs Government tax-sheltering programs such as Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs) and Tax-Free Savings Accounts (TFSAs) are two of the best ways Canadians can lower their tax bills. RRSP contributions lower one’s taxable income now and, provided they are left in an RRSP, defer taxes until retirement, a time when most people are in a lower tax bracket. While the funds contributed to a TFSA are tax-paid money, all dividends, interest and capital gains earned on those funds are earned tax-free.

Keep your receipts It’s often surprising how many expenses the average Canadian can claim on their tax returns. Be sure to save all receipts throughout the calendar year, especially if they relate to medical, moving, childcare or self-employment.

Tax experts often cite missed medical expenses as one of the most overlooked tax breaks. Medical expenses include travel, hotels, medical supplies that aren’t covered by your health care plan, as well as travel and hotel costs for obtaining out-of-town medical appointments or treatments. Be sure to look up the Canada Revenue Agency’s (CRA’s) exhaustive list of eligible medical ex-

penses to see which qualify. Those with benefits plans should check their provider’s website for information about what was and wasn’t covered in their claims.

Many expenses incurred directly from doing business such as travel, vehicle, home office and operating expenses can be written off, all or in part, saving taxes.

Be sure to keep all receipts and record all travel details, including mileage, for tax time.

Claim all your tax credits There are a plethora of tax credits and reductions at both the federal and provincial level which can help lower one’s tax burden. They range from children’s arts and fitness to caregivers to adoption expenses. A list can be found on the CRA website.

Income splitting Perhaps the most common form of income splitting in Canada is pension splitting between retired spouses.

Younger Canadians can achieve income splitting through their businesses or spousal loans, among other strategies.

Final thoughts As with all tax strategies, be sure to consult with your accountant to ensure you are taking advantage of all opportunities available to you. While you’re at it, ask him or her for tax-saving tips that are most suitable for your personal situation.

The Ktunaxa First Nation’s annual Columbia Salmon Festival is back again this year.

The festival will be, just as last year, held on the weekend following the Labour Day long weekend, on Saturday, September 10th. This year is the sixth edition of the event.

“It’s a free festival meant to bring awareness to the loss of salmon on the Columbia River,” said organizer Vickie Thomas. “It will have education and outreach showing the impact of the loss of salmon and the building of dams all along the river. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the history and the future of salmon in the Columbia River.”

The Salmon Festival is once again being spearheaded by the Canada Columbia River Inter Tribal Fisheries Commission (CCRITFC) and hosted jointly here in the Upper Columbia Valley by the Ktunaxa First Nation and the Shuswap Indian Band. come remarks and speeches by dignitaries, at about 11 a.m. attention will shift to the main stage. Local First Nation magician Jeremy Coyote will kick of the activities on the stage, followed by three musical acts, including Bison Brothers, East-West Connection, and Lonesome Jim. After the music, Ktunaxa elder and traditional storyteller Joe Pierre will take to the stage, telling stories and legends. The performance will then be capped by the Ktunaxa Nation dance troupe.

The interpretive Salmon Pavilion, showcasing the story of salmon in the Columbia River, will be back again this year, set up in the festival grounds near the stage.Once the stage activities finish, around 4:30 p.m., the Shuswap band is inviting everybody up for a free salmon feast and powwow at the large white tent on Capilo Way (off Highway 93/95 between Radium Hot Springs and Invermere).

“That (the salmon feast) was a huge success last year.

We had so many dancers and we had 400 people turn out for the feast. I’m hoping we get another great turnout this year,” said Ms. Thomas.

For the second year in a row, Panorama Mountain Resort will be hosting its Tamarack Ridge Walk event, giving the public the experience of hiking the summit ridges as the alpine mountains change colours from summer to fall.

Clarissa Amaro, marketing specialist at the Resort, said they had wanted to do this event for a long time prior to its inception in 2015 after seeing other successful sanctioned hikes in places like Lake Louise. Trying it out last year, they weren’t exactly sure what to expect.

“We thought, ‘Oh, if we get 50 people, that will be pretty good’,” she said, noting that they ended up with 140 guests on the hike, which forced them to divide it into two events this year.

The first of the two ridge walks will take place at 9 a.m. on Saturday, September 17th with the second happening a week later on the 24th. On the second event, guests will also have the opportunity to partake in the long-table dinner that will include a pig roast among other delectable options. The cost for the long-table dinner

The walk starts at the bottom of the mountain as guests take one of three chairlifts that will take them nearly 4,000 feet in combined elevation where they will be able choose from one of three different walks.

The first group will venture the Goldie plateau located between Mount Goldie and Taynton Bowl as the second group makes their way to Goldie Lake surrounded by the Tamaracks. The final group will be able to summit Mount Goldie, which is a total elevation of 2,633 metres above sea level. Ms. Amaro said people enjoyed the experience last year and were surprised what it looked like without the snow. “I think a lot of people were blown away by how wild it is up there,” she said. “A lot of people see it in the wintertime with snow on it and there’s a café at the top with loads of people and it’s still beautiful in the winter, but it doesn’t feel as remote or wild as it does in the summer.”

Lady of the Lake trophy returns home

By Nikki Fredrikson Pioneer Staff Exactly 60 years to the day since Rosemarie Plueschow completed the 13-mile swim across Lake Windermere, the Lady of the Lake trophy has returned to Invermere.

Mrs. Plueschow moved to the Columbia Valley in 1954 after living in Berlin, Germany. During her time in Germany, she took up swim instruction to help finance her studies at the Berlin Conservatory of Music.

Certified by the German government in 1949 in life saving and resuscitation procedure, Mrs. Plueschow’s strong swimming skills and love for the cold water came from summers spent vacationing at her family’s holiday home in Germany. Upon moving to Canada, Mrs. Plueschow, her husband and their young son, Lloyd, settled in Invermere, where Mrs. Plueschow would learn to speak English, continue teaching both swimming and music, and even learn that a bear is not the same thing as a dog.

“My poor mother didn’t know what a bear was; she thought it was a dog,” Lloyd recounted to The Pioneer. “She told me that, that she went to pat what she thought was a dog and people were yelling at her to get away.”

With a love for water and swimming, Mrs. Plueschow would often swim across the width of Lake Windermere, but had never attempted the length. During the summer of 1956, a rumour started that ended up making the news when the Lake Windermere Valley Echo

newspaper reported that Mrs. Plueschow was going to swim the length of the lake.

“It seems, anecdotally, because there’s nothing mentioned in the articles, that it could have been started by a passing comment from my father who was just saying something like, ‘Ah yeah, my wife can swim the lake’,” said Lloyd.

With her fate sealed, Mrs. Plueschow began to train for the 13-mile swim, estimating the swim would take her between seven to eight hours to complete. At 30 years old, hers would be the first recorded attempt to swim the length of the lake. On Sunday, August 26th, 1956 at exactly 8:54 a.m., Mrs. Plueschow entered the lake at the south end, swimming to the north end at Athalmer.

The water was 71 F, equalling 21.6 C. For Mrs. Plueschow, the cold didn’t affect her — it was the weeds and the wasps swarming around her that added difficulty to the swim.

“She never mentioned it was cold, but I always thought she was part polar bear anyways,” said Lloyd.

According to Mrs. Plueschow’s family members, she followed international distance swim standards, using Vaseline as a barrier on her skin to protect her from the cold. During the swim across the lake, she was paced by members of the community. Her husband Gunter Plueschow and Barbara Dothie started the swim with her; next, she was joined by Lucy Weir and Jaryl Osterloh; followed by Cecelia Wilder and Charlie Osterloh and Bob Talbot. Along with the group of swimmers, Mrs. Plueschow was followed by Helen Durnham in the official row boat, rowing the entire lake.

For her swim, Mrs. Plueschow chose to swim the entire lake using breast stroke, maintaining 21 strokes per minute at the start, and keeping pace at 24 strokes per minute throughout most of the swim. When she reached the Columbia River’s current, she sped up to 26 strokes per minute for her swim.

To keep up her strength and energy, she was fed dextrose and chocolate from a cup attached to the end of a rod. While small refuelling breaks were taking place, people pacing the swim were taking breaks and eating sandwiches in their support boats, which attracted the wasps to the swim area. Mrs. Plueschow never once touched a boat during her swim or refuelling. The four foot eleven woman finished her swim at 3:40 p.m. and was greeted on the beach by 200 people, receiving flowers and community praise. The swim, recorded at six hours, 41 minutes and 20 seconds (editor’s note: the trophy states 41 minutes while all the newspapers reported 43 minutes), made history as the first recorded

Plueschow went on to become a local celebrity.

Not long after the swim, she received a $73 cheque from then-editor of the Lake Windermere Valley Echo, Winnifred Weir, who also presented her with a trophy commemorating her successful swim. The trophy was engraved with her time and the title “Lady of the Lake” for an added touch.

Soon after, news of her swim broke nationally and even internationally. Mrs. P l u e s c h o w’s swim was featured in The Province, The

September 2, 2016 Calgary Herald and the Vancouver Sun; even reaching papers back in Germany.

In 1958, Mrs. Plueschow and her family moved to Winnipeg after her husband was stationed there with the Canadian armed forces.

There have only been two other recorded attempts to beat the Lady of the Lake’s time: the first in 1961 by Carl Russell, and the second by Don Mathieson (date unknown). Mr. Russell was 25 years old when he completed the swim in six hours and 40 minutes, but because it was impossible to know the exact start and finish locations of Mrs. Plueschow’s swim, Mr. Russell’s attempt was called a tie with the original time set. The record was definitively broken by Mr. Mathieson, a 15 year old from Calgary, who completed the swim in five hours and 24 minutes.

Mrs. Plueschow passed away in 2004 and her youngest son, Lloyd, was entrusted with the trophy. After years of caring for it, he decided it was best to bring it back to the community whence it came.

On Friday, August 26th, 2016 — exactly 60 years to the day of Rosemarie Plueschow’s historic swim — her “Lady of the Lake” trophy was rededicated back to the community of Invermere.

“I didn’t want the trophy to end up in a landfill site, the loss of history. It’s a Canadian achievement, it’s a British Columbian achievement, it’s an Invermere achievement. First person to swim the lake? I thought, hmm, that sounds important to me,” Lloyd told The Pioneer.

For the trophy re-dedication, a special ceremony was held at the Windermere Valley Museum in which Lloyd presented the trophy to Invermere mayor Gerry Taft who, in turn, entrusted the trophy to the care of the museum.

“I think it’s an important way of recognizing how important the lake is and has been,” said Mr. Taft after the ceremony. “It’s important to us now, but it’s also an indication that it was really important to people 60 years ago. I think (Plueschow’s historic swim) is definitely an impressive feat because it hasn’t been repeated that many times — it stands out in the history books.”

A former lifeguard, lifeguard trainer and swimming instructor himself, Lloyd recently dedicated a three-kilometre swim in his home of Pinawa, Manitoba to his mother titled the “Rosemarie Plueschow 3-km Memorial Swim” as part of the Pinawa Free Spirit Triathlon.

Now that the Windermere Valley Museum has acquired Mrs. Plueschow’s trophy, the whistle she used to instruct children, and her personal scrapbook containing all the old newspaper articles about her swim — all donated by the Plueschow family — the items will be recorded and given a permanent home. Museum curator JD Jeffery said it’s an honour to have the collection and that it will be on display for the public to view.

“We have trophies here in our vaults… curling trophies, common things in some ways. This one is more distinct because it’s a rarity,” said Ms. Jeffery.

Green golfer gives it a shot lake-sized greens.

Some of the more memorable parts of the course have to be the 4th hole on the Ridge course, starting on the tee blocks elevated over the fairway with the mountains in the distance. That’s an image that will be engrained in my mind when I think of the sport of golf throughout my lifetime.

The thing about both these courses is that no matter your skill level, you’re going to be able to walk away with a pleasurable experience. As a novice golfer who, at best, can keep his score in the double digits over 18 holes, I was able to come away with a remarkable afternoon walking through one of the most picturesque areas in the Columbia Valley. When it comes down to it, there’s no single thing I enjoyed most about golfing at either Copper Point course. The fairways and greens were trimmed to perfection, resembling something you’d see on the PGA tour on television, with the courses easy enough to play for a beginner, but challenging enough if you’re a more advanced golfer competing with your friends.

If you’re looking for a great way to spend an afternoon, or an evening like I did on the Ridge, I strongly recommend you try out either of these courses. Although the aura may seem intimidating, it’s not; anyone can and should get out to enjoy all they have to offer.

At no point will I be sitting at home waiting for my PGA tour card to come in the mail, but that doesn’t mean I can’t feel like one, right? After playing both The Point and The Ridge at Copper Point Golf Course, that’s exactly how I felt.

Now, full disclosure, I haven’t exactly golfed the world’s best courses to compare my experiences at these two local courses to, so take my words at your leisure. That said, Copper Point offered me the experience that no other course I’ve played has to date.

From the moment I showed up, the staff made me feel like I was their most important customer. As I stepped up to the first tee box, I had advice given to me about which tees to shoot from to properly match my skill set. Honestly, I was thinking of shooting from the back tees and as a novice golfer who struggles with his driving game, this would have been a callously bad idea.

Once I teed off my first shot, I began to take in just how beautiful the course was.

And that’s saying something because most of my drives were a long way from the welltrimmed fairways.

This isn’t to say the difficulty of hitting the fairways would make me any less likely or willing to play either course. At the Point, a traditional championship course that hosted the 2013 BC Amateur, I needed a strong driver and ability to strike the ball well. At the Ridge, an executive style course without par 5s, it became much more important to hone in on my accuracy, avoiding the countless sand FORE —The scene from the third tee of the Point Course at traps carved out around the Copper Point Golf Club.

Rally for Rune Barck at Windermere course

By James Rose Special to The Pioneer On Thursday, September 22nd, the 2nd annual Rune Barck Memorial Golf Tournament will take place at Windermere Valley Golf Course. The inaugural tournament was an instant success last year with roughly $10,000 raised in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

This year, organizers are expecting to raise at least the same amount if not more.

Proceeds will be split between supporting local charities and Windermere Valley’s revamped junior golf program. “The tournament is open to both men and women with an entrance fee of $99,� said Windermere Valley’s head professional Dale Moore. “The shotgun start gets underway at 2 p.m. and afterward a steak dinner at the clubhouse will be accompanied by a silent auction which will be larger than last year’s.�

Before he passed, Rune Barck was the owner of Skandia Concrete and was a very community and family oriented person. “He was an avid golfer and was always very generous with a variety of local charities and fundraisers,� said Mr. Moore, a close friend of Mr. Barck. “(Skandia’s current general manager) Corey Rokosh is the major sponsor for the event and his work and donation is a great way to extend Rune’s legacy and spirit.�

Pantry pulls out all the stops for customers

By James Rose Special to The Pioneer The Canal Flats Family Pantry is once again pleased to host their annual Customer Appreciation Day on Saturday, September 3rd.

For three hours starting at 11 a.m., staff will be serving smokies, hamburgers, and soda free of charge.

“Our Customer Appreciation Day is a way for us to say thank you to the people who have helped support our business throughout the years,” said the Family Pantry’s manager, Scott Stanbury.

“We will be putting on some really good deals on certain inventory and we are really thankful for our suppliers to help us dole out a great series of draw prizes.”

Despite last year’s closure of the Canal Flats mill, Mr. Stanbury has seen more and more people, especially from outside of Canal Flats, visit and stay in the community.

“Canal Flats is certainly, for many, becoming a home away from home, and so we are increasingly serving (non-permanent) customers four seasons of the year,” he said.

As for looking ahead, Mr. Stanbury has no major plans for the business other than to continue looking after people and to keep the Pantry’s doors open.

New chef at Fairmont Resort

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff The new executive chef at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort brings a wealth of culinary expertise and a love of mountain locations with him to his new role.

Henry Tucker took over the executive chef role at the resort a bit more than a month ago, on July 26th, moving down to the Columbia Valley from another mountain town — Jasper.

In Jasper Mr. Tucker was the executive chef for both Marmot Basin Ski Resort and the Jasper Sky Train and, along with his wife, is excited to delve into the outdoor offerings of his new home.

“I find the Upper Columbia Valley absolutely breathtaking. This new job has kept me busy so far, but I am very much looking forward to exploring all that the valley has to offer,” he said. “I have a few things on my

Seeking Members for The Imagine Invermere Implementation Committee The District of Invermere is looking for members of the public to volunteer for a two (2) year term to guide the implementation of the Imagine Invermere Integrated Community Sustainability Plan, (ICSP).

Imagine Invermere (II) is the District of Invermere’s Integrated Community Sustainability Plan that was developed to provide guidance towards a sustainable and resilient future for our community. The II ICSP identifies community priorities and strategies which guide decisions and actions towards the sustainability goals.

Membership on the committee will be for a two (2) year term from the date of appointment. To be eligible, you must be a resident of the District of Invermere. Successful candidates must possess a strong sense of community service, willingness to work respectfully as part of a team and have good communication skills.

The Imagine Invermere ICSP Implementation Committee duties shall include: • • • • • •

Recruiting community partners for Imagine Invermere and for meeting with existing partners to communicate success stories and to look for ways to move Invermere closer to its vision of sustainability; Reviewing the action inventory priority list (a component of Imagine Invermere ICSP) and making recommendations for action implementation; Organizing local activities and actions that promote sustainability and or move Invermere closer to its vision of sustainability contained within the ICSP; Liaising with residents who wish to discuss Imagine Invermere and its constituent parts including its sustainability objectives, community priorities, strategy areas and associated descriptions of success statements, action inventory implementation and monitoring; Planning the monitoring and annual reporting on Imagine Invermere; Considering sustainability issues or concerns referred to it by Council.

BACKYARD AGRICULTURE IN ELECTORAL AREA G During the past year, the Regional District of East Kootenay asked residents of the Columbia Valley about their thoughts on various aspects of backyard agriculture.

From the results of the engagement it was clear that residents of Electoral Area G would like the opportunity to keep chickens and bees and to install wildlife exclusion fencing around the perimeter of their backyard gardens on single family residential properties.

The next step is to present how we propose to regulate backyard agriculture on single family parcels to residents of Area G and to listen to your comments related to our proposed approach.

Graduating from Beausejour Collegiate, George worked for Manitoba Hydro. In 1966 he joined Parks Canada, starting at Riding Mountain National Park, then Wood Buffalo National Park N.W.T, and last but not least Kootenay National Park until his retirement.

George was a member of Lions International, a club he enjoyed and became a life member of Lake Windermere District Lions Club. George loved to play pool, golf, fish and dance. He spent many hours reading. Coffee in the morning at the Invermere Inn and A&W was a must with George.

The family wish to thank all the girls, as George called the staff, at Columbia House, the nursing staff at Invermere District Hospital and Dr. Olmesdahl for their care and support during George’s illness.

A funeral mass for George will be held at the Canadian Martyrs’ Catholic Church in Invermere on Friday, September 9, 2016 at 1:30 pm.

In lieu of flowers, if desired, charitable donations may be made to the Parkinson Society of British Columbia, 600, 890 - West Pender Street, Vancouver, British Columbia, V6C 1J9.

S OBITUARY S Laughton, Kenneth Cecil 1935-2016

It is with sadness the family of Kenneth Laughton announces his passing in Invermere, B.C. Leaving to mourn is his beloved son Bradley; Daughters Debra and Cynthia; Granddaughter Leah and sister Sandra Risdahl. Ken was predeceased by his brother Norman and both parents.

Ken was born in Calgary, January 31st, 1935. He grew up in the Killarny District, attended Sunalta and Western Canada High. He spent all his working life in the oil industry as a draftsman, oil scout and the latter part of his career as a geological technologist.

In 1991, soon after retiring, Ken moved, full-time, to his cottage in the Tretheway subdivision of Windermere, B.C. and quickly became the unofficial custodian of the neighbourhood. Ken kept busy in his retirement.

Among his many talents were wood carving, making willow furniture, walking sticks and restoring old bicycles.

We would like to thank the wonderful support from all his friends and neighbours at this difficult time, along with the amazing warmth and kindness from the nursing staff of Invermere. Arrangements are with Hindman Bowers, Golden, B.C. By request, there will be no service.

Sanctuaries of silence

By Pastor Murray Wittke Valley Christian Assembly Barely a trickle, Sinclair Creek emerges high above the tree line on Mount Kindersley, snakes downhill through a narrow valley and passes under Highway 93. Turning west, it criss-crosses the highway six times, squeezes through the Iron Gates Canyon next to the traffic tunnel, flows under a parking lot, pops up and dives underground again, turns a corner, surfaces briefly and disappears beneath the Hot Springs. Below the pools, it reappears only to slip underground once more. Far downhill, it re-emerges and rushes toward a concrete tunnel through Sinclair Canyon. Pouring down the other side in a series of narrow waterfalls, it crosses the Park boundary, winds through a campground and passes underneath Highway 95.

Turning north beside a water treatment plant and saw

mill, it fans out into a marsh before finally entering the Columbia River.

Much has changed since James Sinclair’s 1841 journey along this quiet creek. It’s hard to find a place along its banks where the noise of our modern world isn’t drowning out the sounds of nature. But I’ve discovered that despite its challenges, this creek still provides sanctuaries of silence for those who will seek. John Muir wrote: “Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.” There’s something healing about retreating into nature and, for me, some of those places are along Sinclair Creek — my “Chapel of Cool Running Water”.

Sitting on a stone pew near gurgling water, my mind clears, my body exhales, and the fog of noise drifts from my soul. There, as shafts of sunlight illuminate an American Dipper dancing in the stream, I pause and consider the craftsmanship of God’s handiwork. I close my eyes and, in the rustling of leaves, the buzz of a dragonfly and distant drumming of a flicker, I hear creation bear witness to the power, wisdom and loving kindness of its Maker. I feel safe here. As several mule deer wander past, I bow my head, whisper a prayer, and walk softly as I leave this sanctuary of silence.
