Hummingbird buzz Last week’s Pioneer cover photo of a pair of hummingbird eggs, each just a little longer than a centimetre in a nest located in Kootenay National Park, created quite the buzz, and photographer Marie-Claude Gosselin has followed up with another photograph and even more information.

In this picture, the mother Rufous hummingbird is in her nest, which is well-secured to a spruce tree branch. The eggs should hatch anytime soon. According to Richard Cannings’ book Birds of Interior BC and the Rockies, the incubation period varies, depending on the temperature. The warmer it is, the sooner they will hatch; the colder, the longer the incubating period is. She will begin to migrate to western Mexico in mid-July, soon after the male leaves in early July. The young born this year will wait another month before flying south on their own in August. Marie-Claude hopes to take a shot of the chicks once they hatch, so stay tuned.

RCMP Report Submitted by Cpl. Grant Simpson Columbia Valley RCMP As a result of unseasonable weather we experienced over the past week, the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 58 calls for service. Here are just a few of them…

• On Thursday, June 9th at 10:40 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP were dispatched to a single vehicle rollover MVI on Brisco Road in Brisco. BC EHS advised they were attending to a pickup that had rolled with six occupants who had minor injuries. Upon attending the scene, police noted a Ford F350 roadside on the gravel road with extensive damage. The 20-year-old Invermere driver stated he swerved to avoid a deer, fishtailed and lost control. The driver ejected out the driver’s side window. Passengers in the rear seat were not ejected, despite only one of them wearing a seatbelt. EHS and Fire attended and assessed all victims. The most extensive injuries were sore necks and hip pain. STARS attended and assessed all victims, only opting to transport one passenger who had injuries severe enough. The remaining occupants were transported by EHS and a friend to the hospital. The vehicle was written off with extensive body and frame damage. The vehicle taped off until it could be towed the following morning. The driver stated he was travelling approximately 60 km/h, and swerving to avoid the deer on gravel in a newly lifted truck caused the accident. The vehicle rolled approximately three times.

The driver will be issued a violation ticket for operating a vehicle with too many persons in vehicle and failure to wear seat belts.

• On Friday, June 10th at 11:02 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of a disturbance at the Kootenay Park Lodge located at Vermillion Crossing on Highway 93 in Kootenay National Park. Banff Dispatch advised that staff at the lodge were dealing with a violent and belligerent male. Police responded to the report but were advised shortly after receiving the call that the male had departed north on Highway 93 on foot toward Highway 1. Police were contacted shortly after by Park

Wardens who assisted them in dealing with the male as he had been previously warned for illegal camping the day before. Police then attended Kootenay Park Lodge and met with the owners. They advised that the male had camped out at the Vermillion Crossing picnic area the previous night and they had provided him with a free meal.

The male became aggressive with them the next day when he was asked to leave their business and started swearing at them and wanted to fight them. The male left when the owners advised they were going to call the Park police. Police and Park Wardens located the male a short time later, a couple of kilometres away. The male, who would only provide his name and refused to provide his date of birth to confirm his identity, was subsequently arrested by Park Wardens for illegal camping. The male advised he had been assaulted by the Lodge owners but had no marks to support this claim, which was subsequently investigated and confirmed unsupported at this time. The investigation is ongoing.

• On Sunday, June 12th at approximately 4:55 a.m., RCMP dispatch reported an intoxicated female hanging around outside of the Invermere & District Hospital in Invermere. The complainant and employee at the hospital reported that the female said something about a 60-year-old male she was bringing in from the bar who was having trouble breathing. The employee reported that the female was alone and added that she was concerned for the female’s safety. The employee indicated that the female had long brown hair, was wearing a handbag, white shirt, black leggings, and brown boots, but could not determine her age. The employee updated police that she lost sight of the female outside. Police conducted extensive patrols for this intoxicated female with negative results.

• On Monday, June 13th just after midnight, a 56-year-old Windermere male called 911 to report that he’d had a dispute with his 53-year-old brother and that he had left his own residence in the 4700 block of Government Street in Windermere.

Legacy Trail fundraiser a huge success

The Columbia Valley Greenways Trail Alliance held Run, Ride, Rock the Ranch at the K2 Ranch on Saturday, May 21st, with family fun games and activities from 2:30 to 5 p.m. and a ticketed dinner and dance in the evening.

“We were happy to raise $50,000 dollars,” said Greenways events co-ordinator Kim Turgeon. “It was a huge success. It was contributed to by a little more than 300 people who came out in the afternoon and another 300 people who came out for the evening pig roast and dance.”

The event was both a fundraiser and a celebration of all the volunteers and fundraising raised for the Westside Legacy Trail project so far. To date, the total raised for the trail is $1.6 million towards the $5 million project budget.

“We really wanted to celebrate. The Eileen Madson kids did such a great job with the Spell-a-Thon that raised over $8,000 and we also wanted people to come up and see the Shaunessy Ranch. The Shaunessys are a huge part of the project and they (owners Bob and Barb Shaunessy) just wanted to open it up and let people come and really celebrate what we are doing,” said Ms. Turgeon.

The event started off with the family activities during the day including yard Yahtzee, potato sack races and cow patty catapult. The K2 Ranch staff also gave demonstrations in blacksmithing, allowing kids and adults to try their hand. A bike as well as hike tour was also available for the public to participate in during the afternoon events.

The evening started with a pig roast dinner, but was interrupted by the Columbia Valley RCMP when they arrested four attendees for the jail and bail fundraiser portion of the night. The four arrested had to fundraise their bail money in order to be set free, ultimately raising another $4,000 for the trail.

“The jail and bail was great. Another new initiative was, we called it, the Westside Legacy Track Race. We used generators and powered a slot car race track with stationary bicycles. So we had four competitors at a time and they would jump on the bikes and compete and the winner move on to the final. People could buy raffle tick-

The easiest way to explain it was it was a Calcutta-style race track event with a live auction so once people saw the riders compete, then they could buy them,” said Ms. Turgeon.

The Westside Legacy Track Race raised $2,000 and Ms. Turgeon said they will make some refinements so other clubs can borrow the track for future fundraisers.

The Run, Ride, Rock the Ranch event finished off with a silent auction and dance, bringing the total raised to $50,000.

Watch out for the next few Westside Legacy Trail fundraisers. Proceeds from the Lake Windermere Lions Invermere Ballfest July 22nd to July 24th will go towards the project, as will proceeds from the new five-kilometre event at this year’s Loop the Lake on August 6th.

The next fundraiser the Columbia Valley Greenways Trail Alliance will be hosting is a golf tournament and dinner later in the summer (originally scheduled for July 11th) at Eagle Ranch Resort. Furthermore, Greenways and the District of Invermere plan to work together to raise funds for the trail and the new multi-use centre.

By Dean Midyette Pioneer Publisher It is 11 months away until we return to the polls to elect a provincial government and, more importantly, our local MLA. To date, the Liberals have elected Doug Clovechok as their candidate and incumbent Norm MacDonald is resigning his seat after three terms. Only two people have announced that they will seek the NPD nomination: current Invermere mayor Gerry Taft and former Invermere councillor Spring Hawes.

The fact that all of the people currently seeking the local seat in the Legislature are residents of the Columbia Valley speaks volumes of the depth of the leadership that exists within our community.

Consider our local government representatives: they consistently make decisions that are progressive and informed and have the support of a majority of their constituents.

We have a large and varied group of service and notfor-profit organizations with strong executive directors and board members who are constantly evaluating the needs of our communities. They boast a legion of volunteers who assist with everything from project planning to fundraising.

Our business community is awash with innovators, who provide the majority of employment opportunities for families in the valley, and who remain committed to supporting local initiatives.

Our local sports programs are successful due to the time and energy provided by the coaches and parent volunteers.

Our children receive a world-class education from dedicated professionals, many of whom volunteer their time outside the classroom for the benefit of our students.

It’s no wonder that the next person elected to represent us in Victoria will call the Columbia Valley home.

After all, they come from a community of leaders.

Over the past 20 plus years, I have brought anywhere from 50 to 100 Grade 8/9 band students to your lovely area. In that time, we have experienced firsthand the warmth and hospitality of the people who are fortunate to live there. In particular, I would like to point out the wonderful service and hospitality we have received from Best Western Invermere, Columbia Garden Village, Huckleberry’s Restaurant, The Invermere Bakery, Radium Hot Springs, and Fairmont Resort. These businesses have gone out of their way to make our stay a fun and enjoyable experience. Private schools: myths vs. facts Dear Editor: Hats off to Terry Curley (Letter to the Editor, June 10th Pioneer) for taking the time to refute Duane Crandall’s stand on the funding of private schools (Letter to the Editor, May 20th Pioneer). Although we may not be able to abolish private schools, at least we can stop funding these elite establishments with taxpayers’ money. I, too, believe Mr. Crandall didn’t have all the facts. Last fall, the B.C. Retired Teachers’ Association (BCRTA) directed its Excellence in Education Committee to research this issue. The committee’s full report can be accessed on the BCRTA website in the December 2015 Liaison Priorities Newsletter. There you can find the references that back up these statistics. In a nutshell, these are the myths and facts: Myth #1: Funding for public schools and funding for independent schools has increased by the same amount since 2005.

Fact: Funding for independent schools increased 61.1 per cent while public schools funding increased by only 19.7 per cent (Ministry of Education Budget 2015 Overview, February 2015, pp 3-4) Fact: The province has introduced new legislation that will no longer allow municipalities to tax private school playgrounds, fields, parking lots and other land.

Myth #2: Independent schools have always been funded with public monies.

Fact: Prior to 1977, private schools were unregulated and received no provincial government funding. The Social Credit government introduced public funding of private schools in 1977 and only then did enrolment in private schools begin to increase, taking a large share of the provincial education budget.

Myth #3: The financial documents of all B.C. schools are open to public scrutiny.

Fact: Public school finances are open to public scrutiny. The same cannot be said for individual independent (a.k.a. private) schools in B.C. Myth #4: Public schools are not able to offer the choices that parents want.

Fact: A multitude of programs are offered in public schools throughout the province, as evidenced on public school and school district websites.

Myth #5: The Fraser Institute ranking system of B.C. schools is fair and equitable.

Fact: The “School Rankings Report Card” is politically motivated in its underlying assumption that private schooling is preferable to public schools. “The goal is to discredit public schools and open them up to the marketplace. Thus, they create a system of winners and losers.” (Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, 2006) A key factor in the Fraser Institute school rankings is the use of standardized test results.

Researchers point out that demographic factors that define school contexts are a more accurate indicator of a school’s situation than standardized testing.

Myth #6: Lower class sizes, improved class composition and fair wages for teachers in public schools are unaffordable.

Fact: There IS money for increased funding for public education. B.C. ended its 2013/2014 fiscal year with a $353 million surplus. Further, the B.C. economy is projected to grow by 19 per cent over the next five years. (Province of British Columbia 2013/2014 Public Accounts, pp 11 and 18) I’m with Terry Curley. Private schools are necessary Dear Editor: Terry Curley had some comments regarding my letter in your May 20th edition, which I would like to respond to. The issue is government funding of private schools, which Mr. Curley is opposed to (Letter to the Editor, June 10th Pioneer). Mr. Curley stated that “he knows as well as anybody else that the incremental cost of adding those 81,000 students back into the public school system will not cost the full amount of $6,400 per student since schools, buses, teachers, and administrators are already in place.” In actual fact, I don’t know that, and Mr. Curley doesn’t either, nor does anyone else, because nobody would know it until the 81,000 private school students were actually absorbed into the public school system in the communities in which they live.

Some school districts would have an easier time of it than others, but still, with B.C.’s current student population of 553,000 and 30,140 teachers (full-time equivalents), giving us an average class size of 18.35 students, it would mean an extra 4,414 classes. To think that this number of students and classes could be added to the public system at little or no extra cost is naive at best. Can you imagine that the B.C. Teacher’s Federation would agree to take on 81,000 extra students without adding many hundreds of extra teachers? And they would be right not to!

Mr. Curley also brings up the point of some schools being under-used or shut down, perhaps suggesting that parts or all of them could be re-opened. He is correct that some schools are standing closed, such as in Wilmer and Parson, but they are of little use when the extra students may live in Surrey and Coquitlam. Other schools, such as Edelweiss in Golden, have been torn down and the property used for other purposes.

if 81,000 students were added to the public system at the full funding rate of $6,400 per student, the schools would have more money per student… ” He is very correct with that point, but that other $3,200 per student (government funds private schools up to half of the public school rate), which amounts to $260 million, has to come from somewhere. There are only two places it can come from, the taxpayers or other government programs, all to provide money, which is presently being voluntarily funded by the supporters of independent schools. Those independent school supporters, rather than all being “wealthy” citizens, are often parents, grandparents and other family and friends who personally sacrifice because of educational preferences, and while doing so, they pay the same property taxes that all the rest of us pay, fully supporting public education.

Universal public education is certainly a great benefit for Canadian citizens, but so is freedom of choice in education. The headline on Mr. Curley’s letter, “Abolish private schools,” was probably not his writing, but regardless of that, the point it makes is rather scary, because if a government removed freedom of choice in education, it would certainly make many wonder what other freedoms it might take away.

Also, and in conclusion, Mr. Curley suggested that “the current Liberal government could be persuaded to abolish the funding of private schools if enough people demanded a change.” Perhaps it would, but if I were Mr. Curley I wouldn’t bet the farm on it, since even the NDP government from 1991 to 2001 didn’t change the funding formula. I suspect that the members of that government, unlike Mr. Curley, knew a good deal when they saw one.

STAGE 2 WATER RESTRICTION - CORRECTION An information mail out and ad was placed with incorrect information explaining the stage 2 watering restrictions and we apologize for the confusion.

Below is the correct Stage 2 Water Restrictions, which can also be found on the District website.

If the Director of Municipal Works gives notice that, in accordance with a Council resolution, a reduction in water use is necessary requiring stage 2 restrictions, no person shall: (a) use a sprinkler to water a lawn, trees, and shrubs growing on a property that is: (i) addressed with an odd house number except during restricted hours on Mondays and Thursdays; (ii) addressed with an even house number except during restricted hours on Tuesdays and Fridays. (b) use an appliance, except a hand-operated hose equipped with a shut-off nozzle, a hand-held container or a micro-irrigation or drip-irrigation system to water trees, shrubs, flowers or vegetables on any day.

Public transport to Calgary eyed

By Eric Elliott Pioneer Staff For those looking for public transportation between the Columbia Valley and Calgary, good news may be on its way. Members from around the valley have been meeting at the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce in hopes of finding a reasonable solution to bring back a bus line in order to get to the closest metropolitan area.

Up until last fall, Greyhound had been running a public bus from Cranbrook all the way to Calgary that made several stops in neighbouring communities such as Invermere, Windermere, Canal Flats and Fairmont Hot Springs. Spring flowers blossom, daylight past 5 p.m., birds tweeting, outdoor dinners, and gardens are all but a few of them. With Angela Morgan’s solo show at The Artym Gallery, it makes it an awesome month!

Now with decades of experience behind her, Morgan has become an internationally known artist, showing across North America and into Europe. The Artym was her first professional gallery and she continues to hold it dear to her.

Infinity Solstice and Lightning Lix to perform at Strand’s

By Eric Elliott Pioneer Staff “Timeless and relevant.” That’s the best way Infinity Solstice, known as the Bright Wizard of Destiny, can describe the music that he and Ray Monroe, known as Lightning Lix, will be performing at the Strand’s Old House Restaurant on Friday, June 24th.

The duo has been working together for a little over a year, according to Mr. Solstice, and have developed a fair bit of chemistry in their performances. Mr. Solstice speaks high praises of Mr. Monroe’s work.

“Nobody can play guitar like that guy, he’s absolutely astounding,” he said.

“He’s just so creative and it’s just such a pleasure to play with him and he forces me to play so much better. He’ll blow your mind.”

Mr. Monroe said that, as a blues player, he enjoys improvising when performing.

“It’s working out pretty good and I think that’s what people like about it because it’s spontaneous what we do,” he said.

In Mr. Solstice’s spare time, he drives Rockwater’s Blue Bird party bus that brings visitors staying at hotels on the highway into Golden for a night out on the town. He said that he remarkably sold 500 records on that bus last year.

“No kidding, it’s hard to believe be-

cause CDs are just getting to be kind of out of style a bit because people are just plugging into their MP3 players,” Mr. Solstice said.

The duo will be performing mostly cover songs familiar to those in attendance, but will also be performing a number of songs that Mr. Solstice created himself. He wrote his biggest hit, “Fully Functioning Forest,” on the inspiration of trying to find a better way to practice logging. As someone who worked in logging in the past, Mr. Solstice said he even occasionally yells “Fully Functioning Forest,” when passing by loggers to remind people to defend the forest.

“It means that I’m just suggesting a way of looking at the forest,” he said. “I look at art as a way of striving to wake up people and that’s what we do, right?”

He said that he writes his songs from a Canadian perspective, trying to remind listeners of what it means to be Canadians, about issues like war and the legalization of marijuana.

“Every once in a while, I phone Trudeau’s office and read him one of my songs as a poem just as a reminder that some of us don’t think killing people in other countries a million miles away is any fun,” he said.

The performance is set to begin next Friday at 7 p.m. and is open to the public to enjoy at Strand’s Old House Restaurant in Invermere.

Radium Days rocks Radium this weekend

By Nikki Fredrikson Pioneer Staff Pancake breakfast, a parade, a car show, performances and more! Radium Days is set to be a day full of family fun in downtown Radium Hot Springs. The weekend starts off with a family pancake breakfast sponsored by Canfor at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 18th, then events continue into the afternoon. “(For the Pancake breakfast), they’re going to serve out of Brent’s Shack and tables will be set up around the community hall, weather permitting, outside; if not, inside. Then the inflatable play area will be at the rink and then the Brits Best Classic Car Show will happen down in the (Legends field) ball park,� said Radium events co-ordinator Roberta Hall.

Following breakfast, the parade with grand marshal, Radium mayor Clara Reinhardt, will start by the Prestige Inn parking lot and work it’s way down Main Street West, turning down Stanley Street and ending at the park. “In conjunction with the Radium Days is the Brits Best Car Show. Fifty to 60 cars have signed up‌ there will be a few of them in the parade as well,â€? said Ms. Hall.

The car show will be taking place in the ball diamond all afternoon, while Jeremy Coyote (formerly known as The Amazing Jeremy) will be putting on a magic show in the park at 11:30 a.m. As well, the Sunrise Rotary Club of Radium will be running a concession for Radium Days and local band Smarty Pants will be providing musical entertainment for the day. A bat information booth will be set up in the ball park to provide some educational interest and awareness to the day. If that isn’t enough fun for all, a clown will be making its way around the community. “And we’ve got Rolf, the wood carver, coming to do two wood carvings for us, which we’ll auction off closer to the end of the day,� aadded Ms. Hall.

The public will be able to watch the live wood carving throughout the Radium Days events and bid on them at the end of the day. All money raised from the auction will be going back into the community for future events.

Radium Days is an annual event in the community. With activities from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. there will be something going on all day on Saturday June 18th in the Village of Radium. Why are interest rates so low?

In theory, if governments want to create inflation, they simply increase the monetary supply. Likewise, tempering inflation should be easily accomplished by raising interest rates. After all, if things cost more, people have less money to spend.

Over the past several years, the monetary supply has increased dramatically thanks to quantitative easing. The US Federal Reserve increased their portfolio from about $750 billion in Treasury securities in 2007 to almost $4.25 trillion by December 2014. Across the pond, the Eurozone has also increased their monetary supply. Yet, interest rates are at historical lows. So why isn’t there more inflation now?

Interest rate dynamics Many people who take out a loan or mortgage think it is their bank that is lending them the money. In reality, the money is coming from a saver, who has deposited money with the bank in order to earn a return on their investment. The bank is merely the middleman, matching savers and borrowers, earning profits on the difference between the interest rates paid and received.

In years past, there were more borrowers than savers and, therefore, a healthy demand for borrowed money.

If the demand was greater than the monetary supply, interest rates went up, thus encouraging savers to save, allowing more monetary supply for borrowers. When

interest rates got too high and started cutting borrowers out of the market, interest rates would fall, thus righting the ship. For the most part, this supply and demand relationship kept interest rates in check.

Dearth of borrowers Today, monetary supply is plentiful and demand is low. In other words, there is a disproportionate number of lenders and not enough borrowers. And this is by no means just a Canadian problem. Interest rates in the 29 economies that make up 90 per cent of the world’s GDP are low because these economies are experiencing a relatively high saver-to-borrower ratio.

Why is this the case? Many economists agree that it’s due to aging populations. In Canada alone, the portion of the population age 65 and over has been rising since the mid-1960s, because fertility rates have been below the replacement level and life expectancy has been increasing. This figure will continue to increase, as the median age for baby boomers is 58.5 years, and average life expectancy in Canada is about 80 years.

What this means From this data, a few things can be inferred. Firstly, that interest rates could remain low for an extended period, despite increases to the world’s monetary supply.

Secondly, that current population demographics

have impacted the ability of governments to increase inflation, since the current monetary policy system is derived from loan growth in the banking system. Barring any major changes to these policies or unforeseen world events, traditional methods of creating inflation have so far had little effect.

Finally, while low interest rates will likely persist for a while, the effects of excess monetary supply will eventually catch up, causing widespread inflation. It is unknown when and what form this will take, but one thing is for sure: once the inflation train starts rolling, it can be very difficult to put on the brakes, even with inflation-tempering tools in a government’s arsenal.

Final thoughts While nobody knows for sure how things will turn out, it makes sense to look at supply and demand factors for answers. After all, there was another time in recent history when interest rates got out of whack: during the 1970s and early 1980s, when the Baby Boomers were taking on debt to buy houses and start their adult lives. Now, as the Boomers are transitioning into being savers, it would appear that they are again tipping the interest rate scales in their direction.

Our freshwater aquatic forest Watershed Wanderings

By Megan Peloso Pioneer Columnist May and June are planting months. In the next several weeks, we will cater happily to peas, carrots, tomatoes, and all varieties of sweet-smelling flowers. Downtown Invermere is a locus of this transformation, with beds of blooming blossoms at every corner. We love to surround ourselves with plants, but not all are equally esteemed.

“Is there a weed problem in the lake?”

This is a question I am often asked.

The short answer is that a shallow and warm river within a contiguous wetland is prime plant real estate. Plant growth can increase when there are too many nutrients, especially phosphorus, entering the water (phosphorus is found in chemical-based fertilizers, for example). But the tricky thing about weeds is that they are just wild plants we don’t like, so what is the weed problem about, really?

In our youth, we learn to appreciate the important functions of forests. Trees and plants provide shelter, oxygen and respite from the sun. They stabilize soil through their root systems, they filter and clean the air we breathe, absorb carbon dioxide, and provide pleasant spaces to enjoy.

A diversity of aquatic plants constitutes a delicate forest in the underwater ecosystem. Natural and essential to the river’s continued functioning, aquatic plants are not unlike grasslands, undergrowth, and forests of the Columbia Valley landscape.

and cool the water. Rooted plants keep water clear by preventing mucky river bottoms from stirring up with wind currents or boating activity. They trap sediment, protect shorelines from erosion, and absorb nutrients and toxins.

They provide nesting sites for birds, habitat for fish, and food for wildlife… ... See the resemblance?

“Can’t we just remove them?”

Because they provide fish habitat, aquatic plants are protected by the federal Fisheries Act. Failing to obtain the necessary permits and approvals before removing aquatic plants can result in substantial fines and a requirement to cover the costs of returning the site to its original state.

Ultimately, removing aquatic plants does the opposite of “cleaning a lake”; it removes the architecture that provides clean water in the first place. Thanks to the likes of chara, floating-leaf pondweed, bulrush, and others, these sophisticated services are free of charge!

So, next time you brush up against a slimy aquatic plant or notice greenery caught in your rudder or propeller, you might give the green stuff some gratitude.

Wilmer carpenter starts chicken coop business

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff A Wilmer carpenter had no idea that when he and his wife took in a dozen rescue hens last spring, the flock would spark a new side business for him.

Tavis O’Rourke and his wife decided to foster 12 ex-battery hens more than a year ago. Tavis, who owns Purity Homes Renovations, immediately put his skills with hammer and nails to work, creating what he calls the perfect chicken coop.

“We were kind of joking about taking in hens and next thing you know we ended up with a whole bunch of them,” he told The Pioneer. “I made them a coop, a kind of fancy one. I hadn’t really thought about doing it as a business, I just wanted to figure out how to make a perfect coop for our chickens. But as soon as I finished it, other people starting asking if I could make one for them.”

Mr. O’Rourke’s chicken coop is designed so that the run and the den are all one, making it easier to maintain. He’s since made four similar models for customers, and all of them have been pleased with the results. It takes him about a week, depending on design specifics, to create a coop.

An increasing number of municipalities, both in the province and across the country, allow the keeping of backyard chickens, which makes Mr. O’Rourke’s new side business a growth area.

“A lot of places are doing it. It seems like it’s really starting to trend,” he said, adding keeping chickens is actually quite peaceful.

“It’s more than just the fresh eggs. They’re pretty good pets and easy to take care of.

We usually let them out in the yard during the day and they get along great with our dog,” said Mr. O’Rourke.

WildSafeBC goals for 2016 WildSafeBC Andrea Smillie WildSafeBC Co-ordinator The WildSafeBC program has started up again in the Columbia Valley, and bear season is already upon us. As always, make sure that you are aware of how you dispose of your waste and manage other potential attractants, such as bird feeders, compost, pet food, backyard agriculture (chickens, rabbit hutches, bee hive colonies, etc.) and fruit trees.

WildSafeBC is available in your community (Invermere, Radium, and RDEK Areas F and G) to provide educational resources to help us all reduce — or avoid entirely — human-wildlife conflict.

This is going to be a busy year for the program. WildSafeBC is continuing community outreach events in Invermere, Radium, Panorama, Fairmont, and hopefully other communities as well. Andrea Smillie will be the WildSafeBC Community Co-ordinator once again in our area.

If you are interested in helping out, please send Andrea an email (radium@wildsafebc.com or invermere@wildsafebc. com). Volunteering is a great way to help out your community and to learn about wildlife at the same time.

The program will also continue to do garbage surveys at night in order to see if residential bins are still being placed curbside the night before pickup.

Please note: There is a bylaw in place stating that your bins should be placed curbside the morning of pickup, but not before. It is also extremely important that commercial and institutional garbage bins are locked at

night; this is when the potential for bear activity is high.

Please encourage your friends, family and neighbors to manage their garbage properly so that we don’t have bears attracted into town and becoming habituated, and/ or food-conditioned.

WildSafeBC is also working with the District of Invermere and the Ministry of Environment to receive “Bear Smart Community Status”. This is a certification that communities around the province are able to apply for once they’ve committed to take measures to prevent human-bear conflict, including proper waste management, having an education program in place, and having suitable bylaws that enforce attractant management.

We will require participation from business owners, residents and government to make Invermere a successful “Bear Smart” community. For more information see the Ministry’s website: www.env.gov.bc.ca/wld/bearsmart.

This is an exciting endeavour that could substantially reduce the potential for human-wildlife conflict while highlighting the community of Invermere on a provincial level. There are also volunteer opportunities to help spread the word about this project.

Biodiversity and Us The Green File

By Mark Cullen Pioneer Columnist I define biodiversity as “all of the life forms that exist in our world”. Just as there is a “micro climate” in your backyard, there is “micro-biodiversity” there also. It is this that I wish to discuss — your “backyard”.

Increasingly, scientists are acknowledging that the importance of urban/suburban yard space as it relates to biodiversity in the big picture: lawns, gardens and open green spaces have an impact on the issue.

Recently, I had a conversation with my friend Bryce Hunter, a passionate amateur birder. He commented that many song birds have not been observed in the numbers seen in previous years. Why? No one knows for sure.

As a gardener, I am particularly interested in what I can do to help the situation. For one, I love birds and no one can dispute that birds play an important role in creating and maintaining the biodiversity that we aim for. To attract birds to your property, it is fundamental to provide a secure environment for nesting, lots to eat (including many garden-variety bugs) and water. Our gardens can provide all of this and more.

What can you do?

First, consider the plant material that you have planted in your garden. I am a great fan of native plants, but do believe that most gardens or gardeners are best served by a combination of both native and non-native plants. The criteria for choosing plants for your garden should be providing accessible pollen or nectar. Doubleflowered plants are a poor choice as their reproductive parts are not accessible (or they do not exist at all!) to pollinators like bees and hummingbirds. Butterflies re-

Attracting pollinators The truth is – and you will not want to hear this – the larvae of butterflies are also important to the biodiversity of your garden and outdoor space. A grown-up butterfly is a caterpillar that has pupated… and matured.

Put another way, a butterfly is a caterpillar with colourful wings; which are not to be confused with squirrels, which my mother always said were rats with tails.

Encouraging butterflies and moths in your garden is a process that includes secure space where they can lay eggs and provide a food source for their “babies”. Not only will the creepy crawly children of the butterflies need some plants to munch on, the local song bird population will delight in picking off many or most of them. As the caterpillars eat your lilies for lunch, the birds eat the caterpillars for dinner. Regardless of how you feel about the issue, truth is we have fewer chemicals available to use in the

garden to “control” the “pests”. I contend that these new limitations are causing those of us who garden to think differently about it: our image of the perfectly trimmed yard with the pristine foliage and flowers from some childhood dream is changing. Our dream now includes a few holes in the leaves and powdery mildew on the rhubarb.

Nature changes — we change As each season passes, I believe that we will value our gardens and the experience of working in them differently. Slowly, it will dawn on us — and not so slowly for the emerging generation of gardeners — that we need pollinators in order to survive.

Thirty-five per cent of our diet relies on them. These invertebrates form part of the food chain and, without them, animals higher up the chain go hungry.

To say the brothers are competitive would be an understatement.

With Trystan getting back to competitions in the last few weeks, the sibling rivalry has already begun. Last weekend, Trystan and Wyatt competed against each other, with Trystan coming away with the win and Wyatt close behind with a second place finish.

“Super competitive. They were very close and the rest of them weren’t to be seen. They led the whole way — it was an awesome race,” said Kendyl proudly.

Last year, Wyatt competed at his first X Games, placing 17th out of 26 competitors in an event with a highly technical track.

“It’s an amazing feeling to see them doing well,” Kendyl said.

Watching his kids compete at such a high level has been exciting for Kendyl.

“Hair straight back it is, they’re so fast. (It’s) very exciting sometimes, nerve-racking, especially for my wife (Pam). She’s not as easy with it. We’re at that level now, that pro level now, where things can go wrong and somehow they hold it together. It’s very intense,” he said.

Kendyl competed in off-road cross country when he was around 17 years old, starting with his friends when he was 12. For him, dirt biking is a passion that he’s been able to pass on, along with his knowledge, to his kids. His daughters, Taylor and Quintynn, both compete in dance and soccer, but the youngest, Quintynn, is starting to compete again in dirt biking, and placed second in her division at the Panorama Hare Scramble.

You can find the Harts, when they’re not working or at a competition, working on their bikes and practising on one of three tracks on their property. The tracks are all customizable for the kids to practice all three styles of dirt biking. However, you won’t find Kendyl riding those tracks with the boys.

“They’re at a different level than me,” he said with a laugh.

But he will do fun rides on Tuesday nights with his sons and his friends — they all go out together every week. So even dear old dad gets some time in on his bike.

From supporting his children on the soccer field, at the dance studio and by working on their bikes in his free time, Kendyl Hart is one dedicated father.

“He’s my biggest supporter and sponsor, probably my number one fan as well,” said Wyatt.

The next event Kendyl and his boys are preparing for is Red Bull’s Rocks and Logs competition in Calgary on June 25th.

You are the best parent a kid could have. You were there, driving, volunteering, coaching, and cheering as I participated in a myriad of sports and other activities. It was because of your support and encouragement that I was able to achieve success.

You are an incredible teacher. After over 35 years of pursuing excellence as an educator, I still have your former students recognize me and tell me that

you were one of the best teachers they ever had. You were one of my best teachers as well.

You taught me the value of service to community and how important it is to give back.

You were a leader in your school, your community and in your profession. Not only did you have a positive impact on over 10,000 students, you were one of three people who worked tirelessly to bring the International Baccalaureate program into the school system. You created, in conjunction with CODA, the National Sports School for high performance athletes, which became a model for similar schools worldwide. You also mentored younger teachers and

I saw firsthand the admiration and respect you had earned from your peers.

You shared your love of travel, taking your family to over 30 countries, immersing us in different languages and cultures. Very few are fortunate enough to have those experiences.

Most importantly, you taught me how to be a good father and husband. You have incredible grandchildren because of the values you embrace and instilled in my brother and me.

We’re told that we can’t choose our parents, but if we could, I would choose you.

I love you Dad. Happy Father’s Day.

Toonie Tuesday another success!

By Eric Elliott Pioneer Staff Yet another Toonie Tuesday race took place last week on June 7th on Mount Swansea with over 40 riders participating in the event. The Columbia Valley Cycling Society event was sponsored by Bicycle Works and co-organized by Chris Skinner and Nat McGrath.

There were four divisions for the race: Under 17 — won by Alyas Murray (front far right); Women’s division — won by Stef Waswick; Enduro — won by José Tomás Letelier Prieto (front far left); and Men’s downhill — won by Lee Roy Brown (back).

Another Toonie event is happening, this time on Monday, June 20th at Nipika Mountain Resort. Registration for the race will be at 5:30 p.m. at the Nipika Barn with the race commencing at 6 p.m. The race will be five kilometres long with one hour devoted to racing with a variety of special challenges included. Those planning to attend are invited to stick around for a barbecue and beverages in the barn or go for a swim after the race.

Free Fishing for Father’s Day! Submitted The Province of British Columbia is offering license-free freshwater fishing this Father’s Day weekend, making it easy for everyone to get out and enjoy one of B.C.’s most popular recreational activities.

The 17th annual Family Fishing Weekend runs from June 17th to 19th, 2016, offering special angling events in 49 communities throughout B.C. — from hatchery tours, to fishing lessons for novices, and beachside barbecues.

These weekend events are being co-ordinated by the Family Fishing Society, a not-for-profit organization run by and for anglers. Last year, an estimated 40,000 anglers took advantage of the free license weekend or the Family Fishing Weekend events throughout the province.

Steve Thomson, Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, said this weekend offers families a great opportunity to get outdoors.

“Summer for many B.C. families is about spending time together in the outdoors and Family Fishing Weekend is the perfect way to kick off the season,” he said.

The free fishing is open to all Canadian residents and is good for most freshwater lakes and non-tidal streams in British Columbia with the exception of 18 restricted trout and steelhead streams. Making sense of Mars

By Brian Fenerty Pioneer Columnist Mars, dominating our evening sky in the south, was closest to Earth at the end of May and still is close for some time.

Some observers say Mars is red, but it is not intense like the colour artists know by that name. Rather, it’s a paler version. I have heard it described as salmon pink. Even so, it is definitely reddish compared to most other night sky objects. There are a few reddish stars, but they are so far away they seem mere pinpoints compared to muchcloser therefore much wider-looking Mars.

Because it appears wider, especially when close to Earth in our two orbits, our atmosphere’s usual wiggling is not enough to make Mars twinkle like visually narrower, pinpoint stars. And its reddish colour? That’s because Mars is indeed rusty with various iron compounds.

Maybe in its early history, had we been looking, we might have seen hints of blue from a northern Martian ocean. Not now. Traces of water-like stains seeping down slopes suggest underground water remains (as well as there being polar ice). Current guidelines prevent Mars probes from directly checking such possible flows — to avoid contaminating them with Earth microbe hitchhikers. But finding water (for drinking, fuel making, etc.) will be essential for any people taking the risky, bold, very complex step for humanity, to live far beyond our current nest.

I emphasize “complex” because processes on other planets are not just tough, challenging extensions of processes we know on Earth; they hold surprises we won’t even know until we are there!

One surprise, for example, is the persistent cloud “hexagon” around Saturn’s north pole. Space probes found that shape. We can’t see that from here, even with huge telescopes, but you can see pale Saturn and its rings in typical astro binoculars or telescopes, currently a bit east of Mars.

And this brings us to the second part of our notes on observing equipment.

the diverse range of telescopes one might consider. For now, here are key tips for choosing, followed by one of several online references you might check, from an expert in the same astronomy society that I belong to.

Like binoculars, width means more light from faint objects is gathered. Some styles, called reflectors, use wide mirrors very well for that. On the other hand, they take up more vehicle space, require considerable set-up and take down, etc.

Refractors are generally narrower, but somewhat easier to use. Although they gather less light, they can show details better, like hints of Saturn ring division or Jupiter cloud bands.

Tip: first look at our night sky through other’s various equipment. Ask them about the pros and cons for each. Think out what will be optimal for you. Don’t, for example, just automatically buy the biggest — you may use it less than your convenient binoculars! Also check out more details at http://calgary.rasc.ca/telescopes/.

“Hope is pretty much gone. The provincial government (which has been negotiating with the Canadian Pacific on behalf of the rafting companies) has made all kinds of concessions and Canadian Pacific is being unreasonable,” said Golden-based Glacier Raft Company coowner Carmen Narancsik. “The offer the provincial government has made to Canadian Pacific is still on the table, but we’re (the rafting companies) kind of moving on, since we don’t think anything will be resolved.”

Ms. Narancsik added her company has had to start refunding trips booked on the Lower Canyon.

“It’s a difficult time, but we still have the upper and middle parts of the river, so we still have two great sections of the Kicking Horse River to run,” she said.

Mr. Oszust, Columbia River-Revelstoke MLA Norm Macdonald and Kootenay Columbia MP Wayne Stetski have all said the blame lies squarely with Canadian Pacific.

Mr. Macdonald was at the rally and told The Pioneer that “there were a lot of people there who were upset at (Canadian Pacific chief executive officer) Hunter Harrison for sending senior people to tell us there was a solution, and then clearly backing away from that.”

The sticking point in the negotiations is the rail company demanding that the provincial government assume all financial liability for anything happening at the site

June 17, 2016 where the rafters cross the tracks, according to an open letter from provincial Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone and provincial Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training Shirley Bond.

Mr. Macdonald pointed out this could mean that, theoretically, B.C. taxpayers are on the hook to pay for the results of a train going off the rails and into the river.

“It is totally unreasonable to think B.C. taxpayers would take on basically the full financial responsibility for any loss or injury from Canadian Pacific’s operations despite having no jurisdiction over Canadian Pacific. That is why we continued to negotiate with all of the parties and even offered to cover the full cost of a safe crossing — estimated to be $250,000 — as well as offering to take on the financial responsibility for any injuries suffered by rafters during a permitted crossing,” wrote Mr. Stone and Ms. Bond in the letter. “Canadian Pacific again declined these offers. Their only position was for the province to assume full liability for the permitted crossing by rafters.

An unfair position according to all parties, except Canadian Pacific.”

“There’s a tremendous amount of frustration with Canadian Pacific and the leadership there, and how they’ve treated the community of Golden,” said Mr. Macdonald, adding that prior to the April 22nd meeting at which the agreement to allow rafting was announced, Canadian Pacific vice-president of corporate affairs and chief of staff Mark Wallace did not saying anything about the province assuming all liability, but then showed up at the negotiating table with that strict requirement.

The rail company, however, has a different take on the situation.

“Canadian Pacific has been involved in good-faith discussions, but the government of B.C. has stated that it is unwilling to assume liability that may arise from any incident that might occur as a direct result of rafters accessing the tracks,” Canadian Pacific spokesperson Salem Woodrow told The Pioneer in an email. “It is important to note Canadian Pacific does not expect the province to assume liability for any incident that did not result from the access of the tracks as contemplated in the agreement. Without full indemnification, Canadian Pacific cannot support rafters ac. . . ‘Local’ from page 12 “The history books are primarily written by men and they’re primarily written about combat because that’s what interests guys, but the contribution of women made behind the scenes has been sadly overlooked.”

“Canadian Pacific wants zero liability this season, yet they pass through the community of Golden every day with train cars, some of which carry materials that are potentially hazardous. There is a risk with that. There have been derailments in the past. Yet we in Golden accept that and live with a certain amount of risk, because we understand that is simply the way it has to be,” said Mr. Macdonald. “The community has treated Canadian Pacific in a fair way in that regard, and they (Canadian Pacific) should reciprocate, but they are not. It’s hugely problematic.”

He added that the rail company should have been upfront about its intentions prior to the April 22nd announcement.

“The rafting companies trusted that commitment (to allow rafting in the Lower Canyon), and based on it, they hired people and took bookings. Now they have to cancel those, which in many ways makes the situation even worse,” said Mr. Macdonald.

Mr. Oszust was more blunt, saying in a press release that “it appears that they (Canadian Pacific) lied to our faces” later adding “if communities such as Golden insisted on the same level of mitigation of risk and liability that Canadian Pacific Rail is demanding in this case, passage of dangerous goods through our community, and through communities across Canada, would end right now.”

Mr. Stetski, in a press release, called the situation unacceptable and said, “I am quite prepared to make this a national issue around whether or not Canadian Pacific Rail should have the right to block Canadian’s access to our lakes and rivers across our country.”

Mr. Macdonald said that, given the complexity of the issue, reaching a short-term solution to allow rafters access to the Lower Canyon this summer would be a huge challenge, but added it’s important to immediately begin work on a long-term solution, to prevent the same situation from happening again next spring. based fiction” in that it is completely based on facts she discovered in her research. Don’t be defined by doubt

By Matt Moore Associate Pastor, Lake Windermere Alliance Church This week I had the opportunity of looking at the meaning of being redeemed by the grace of God. As a pastor, it is not just my job, but it is a privilege, to have an opportunity to share the Bible and all her goodness with others. I was able to share on Sunday what God’s idea of redemption means to me.

I know that I have had my fair share of failures and shortcomings and, for a long time, those shortcomings defined me. The truth is, I let those things define me. I let my shortcomings become my focus in life. I wasn’t smart enough to make the honours list, I wasn’t athletic enough for university teams, and I just felt a serious lack of self-confidence. I simply wasn’t good enough.

Through the promises I read in Romans, I read that everyone is a sinner or failure in some way. We have all failed to live up to what God expects of us and the punishment we deserve is death. I thought that this was kind of unfair for God to treat us this way. Seriously?

God has a standard for me that I can’t live up to and if I can’t live up to it I deserve death. Yikes!

But the story doesn’t stop there! God, is His goodness, sent Jesus to show us what that standard looks like. Jesus lived a life in order to set an example of how we ought to live and he even died the death we all deserve for our shortcomings.

We can, through Jesus, experience having those failures, shortcomings and doubts about ourselves removed from us as far as the east is from the west. If we would believe in our hearts and confess with our mouths that Jesus is Lord and that Jesus truly did accomplish what He said he did, we will be saved. I realized that it’s okay to have failures; I still experience falling short of God’s standard, but I am no longer defined by my failures. I am defined as a Jesus follower. I am a child of God. A student of the Almighty.

I no longer need to be defined by selfishness, deception and anger. Because of Jesus, I am defined by love, truth, and grace. I know I cannot accomplish these things on my own; I need to depend on Jesus, asking for his strength, forgiveness and, by reading his autobiography, to gain insight and wisdom. If you, too, were like me, defined by your shortcomings, I invite you to check in with God. He is waiting to do great things in your life.
