Konig duo bring home more ribbons

By Eric Elliott Pioneer Staff For the fourth consecutive year, the team from the Konig Meat and Sausage Company has left the Fraser Valley Food Show’s Great Canadian Sausage Making Competition with multiple awards for a variety of their delectable sausage products.

Held on April 2nd this year, the Fraser Valley Food Show judged some of the best sausages made by 18 different butchers from across the country. This year, coowner Craig McGowan said the team took home fivesecond place finishes in the competition.

“It’s really competitive,” Mr. McGowan said. “It’s a serious thing when we get there. We’re just happy when we get there that we’re doing this. We go every year and we’re very glad our products are well-received and consistently win awards every time we go.”

Last year Konig took home two first place awards to go with a pair of second-place finishes and a third.

Within the competition, there are as many as 20 different categories for butchers to enter across three different sub-categories. Konig had entries in each of the three main categories — cooked/smoked sausage, raw uncooked sausage and charcuterie.

Mr. McGowan said, despite their variety, there’s always been at least one sausage that’s well-received in both the local community and at competition.

“We consistently place with our Western Style Bratwurst, which is our popular selling sausage — it’s kind of like our bread and butter — and we’re glad that it consistently gets awards,” he said. “People tell us how much they love it and come back for it and that’s kind of our mainstay as far as sausage goes.”

Mr. McGowan and co-owner Michael Hecken first decided to enter the competition years ago as a way to travel and see how their sausage stacked up against competition from across Canada.

Main Street Boost program comes to Invermere

It’s called Main Street Boost, a program that aims to enhance the downtown core of the community. Jim Mountain, director of regeneration projects at National Trust for Canada was in Invermere B.C. last week meeting

with the community to work through the beginning stages of planning.

“Regeneration is a name we use for taking the assets of the community, the natural, cultural, human aspects, and really helping that community become sustainable over time. You have to work with the community in order to sustain buildings, theatres, a healthy downtown. It’s all integrated, it’s an ecosystem.

My job is to help communities learn methods on how to do that,” said Mr. Mountain.

Columbia Valley RCMP responded to approximately 81 calls for service over the past week. Here are just a few of them: • On Monday, May 30th, Columbia Valley RCMP received a complaint of a theft that occurred on the 27th at around 2 p.m. The complainant reported a male subject entered his business situated in the 4900 block of Fairmont Frontage Road, Fairmont Hot Springs and stole a bottle of vodka. He advised that a witness had observed the male enter the store, take a bottle of vodka and shove it into his shirt and then leave without paying. The witness then followed the suspect out of the store and recorded the license plate of his vehicle description and advised staff of the theft. The witness also advised who they believed the male was. On the 31st police attended to the business and viewed the surveillance footage. They immediately recognized the male and will be actively pursuing charges of theft against the suspect.

• On Tuesday, May 31st at 12:54 a.m., Columbia Valley RCMP stopped a 54-year old Invermere male driving a 2002 Pontiac Montana. The male driver was detained for driving while having his license suspended. During the course of this investigation, police developed reasonable suspicion that the male was also under the influence of alcohol. He was then also detained for an investigation into this and after he provided breath samples, he was prohibited from driving for 90 days and his vehicle impounded for 30 days. The male driver was also issued an Appearance Notice for him to appear in Court on August 29th to answer to the charge of driving while suspended.

• On Wednesday, June 1st at 11:59 a.m., Columbia Valley RCMP were dispatched to a report of a break and enter at an abandoned hotel in the 4800 block of St. Joseph Street in Radium Hot Springs.

The vacant motel had door number four kicked in and someone apparently squatted there. A bottle of Powerade and a pack of cigarettes were left in the bathroom and

were seized as evidence for forensic processing. Nothing appeared to be missing as the room was empty and the only damage that was noted was to the door and door frame.

Police called and advised the owner of the property. Investigation into this incident is ongoing and police are requesting anyone with information relating to this matter to contact them or Crimestoppers.

• On Thursday, June 2nd a 44-yearold male called to report that his ex-tenant had threatened him via a text message. He had evicted a 40-year-old local female from his property located in the 4900 block of Cedar Crescent in Canal Flats and she had left the place in disarray. Due to the state of his rental home the landlord posted a warning not to rent to this tenant on a public Canal Flats forum. The tenant was upset about the post and texted the landlord insinuating she would be causing more damage to the home and would not return the key. Both parties called to complain about the other. Police spoke with both parties and found no police matter. The tenant advised she was upset about the posting regarding her orderliness but that she would not cause any damage to the property and was just upset.

She advised she would be dropping the key off to the real estate agent in the morning. The landlord was updated and he advised he took down the posting about the tenant. Both parties happy with police mediation.

• On Sunday, June 5th, at 5:58 a.m., Columbia Valley RCMP were dispatched to a golf course situated in the 5000 block of Riverview Road in Fairmont Hot Springs for a break, enter and theft of an ATM. Police attended the scene and reviewed surveillance video footage which shows a lone male wearing dark clothing, a balaclava and gloves stealing the ATM that was bolted to the floor after breaking into the building. Parts of the ATM and a two-wheel cart used in the theft were recovered and seized as evidence.

A car used during the theft was also noted in the surveillance video. Police continue to investigate this incident and are asking that anybody with any information regarding this crime to come forward or to contact Crimestoppers.

Invermere mayor aims to become next local MLA

By Eric Elliot Pioneer Staff It seems far away now, but the day is rapidly approaching for people to go to the polls to determine the new MLA for the Columbia River-Revelstoke riding.

Among those putting their name in the hat to replace incumbent Norm Macdonald is current mayor of Invermere Gerry Taft.

Mr. Taft’s roots are deeply engrained in the town of Invermere already, growing up here before joining town council at the age of 20 in 2002. By 2008, Mr. Taft was elected as the mayor of Invermere and began serving as the Director on the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK). Besides being a successful local politician, he also owns and operates his own café and gelato shop, Gerry’s Gelati Cafe, which has been serving the valley since 2004.

He said that this time spent working in local government has highlighted the importance of provincial politics on the local level.

“Most of the decisions that towns or regional districts can make are based on decisions made by the province either around rules, legislations or through funding and lack of funding and partnerships,” he said.

Unlike Liberal candidate Doug Clovechok who is

running for office, Mr. Taft will have to win the party nomination first against Spring Hawes (and possibly against other nominee candidates who may come forward), which will be decided in mid-October, Mr. Taft said. Members of the NDP provincial party will have the opportunity at that time to vote for Mr. Taft or Ms. Hawes if they have been members of the party for at least 90 days.

Mr. Taft said that he will continue to emphasize the importance of local communities if elected as an MLA. “I think the need of towns, cities, regions are becoming more autonomous or more in control of their own destiny,” he said. “In some cases the provincial or federal government are not getting out of the way and not helping and that’s exactly what we need to do which is to encourage decisions to be made locally by those that are going to have the direct impacts.”

For now he said he hopes voters recognize his experience of effort and dedication to municipal politics over the years when they go to the polls.

“It does take sacrifice and it does take hard work and hopefully people ask those kinds of questions and think about that, especially when comparing the BC Liberal candidate who has never held local office or has never been elected to anything,” he said. “To compare that, there is a very different set of experiences.”

Former Invermere councillor vies for NDP nomination

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff Former Invermere councillor Spring Hawes has announced that she will seek the NDP nomination in the Columbia River-Revelstoke riding.

Ms. Hawes sent an email on Tuesday, June 1st outlining her intent to replace current Columbia RiverRevelstoke NDP MLA Norm Macdonald (who will step down come the 2017 provincial election to return to his teaching career) and then formally launched her nomination bid with an event at the Circle Cafe on Monday, June 6th.

“Earlier this year I had a call from some people with the B.C. NDP asking me to considering putting my name in the running. I felt honoured, because Norm is really well respected and has done great work. After giving it some careful consideration, I have agreed to run,” Ms. Hawes told The Pioneer. “I have a big, bold, bright vision for our riding and a lot of my past work aligns with the values of the NDP. I think it’s

great to have more diverse voices in Victoria and I can bring those voices. I can speak for women, I can speak for people with disabilities and I can speak for people facing other challenges.”

Ms. Hawes pointed to her two terms as a municipal councillor (from 2008 to 2014), her experience as a small business owner, her involvement with various community-based initiatives (such as Imagine Invermere), and her championing of accessibility issues as reasons why she believes she is a strong candidate.

She had stepped down from local government in 2014 to focus on pursuing an English degree.

“I took a timeout from politics a few years ago, just to step back a bit. When I was away from politics, I found I still cared about it a lot. It’s something I’m really invested in,” she told The Pioneer. “I feel really dismayed about the cutbacks we’ve seen for education, seniors and for childcare. These are things I’m passionate about.”

Gender equality

Hillary Clinton made history on Tuesday as she won the right to become the first woman to represent a major party in her campaign to become President of the United States. Her victory represents, among other things, another step toward equality between the genders.

Generally Canadians tend to see our society as more progressive than our neighbours to the south, but how progressive are we when it comes to gender rights? This year marks the 100th anniversary of Canadian women being given the right to vote. Some women, who were landowners, were given the right to vote as early as 1791, a right that was later stripped in 1849. In 1916 some provinces allowed women to regain the right to vote in provincial elections but it wasn’t until 1918 that women aged 21 or older were given the right to cast a ballot in federal elections.

In 1919, the suffrage movement was at its strongest, with women earning the right to hold political seats. Agnes Macphail became the first woman elected to Parliament in 1921.

In 1929 the “Famous Five” won the Pearson case which resulted in women being considered persons under the law.

Today more and more women are earning leadership roles yet the “glass ceiling” still persists. Women hold only 4.4 per cent of the chief executive officer positions in Fortune 500 companies.

While we have gender equality in our federal cabinet female MPs only account for 26 per cent of the representatives in the House of Commons.

Women employed full time make only 73.5 cents for every dollar a man makes. Women of childbearing age are discriminated against by some employers because pregnancy is inconvenient. The lack of affordable daycare forces many young mothers to delay re-entering the workplace, forgoing raises and promotions.

It is estimated that women won’t reach wage parity until 2033. Women in Canada deserve better. They deserve to be full and equal partners.

Abolish private schools Dear Editor: I am writing in response to the letter of Mr. Duane Crandall which was published in the May 20th edition of The Pioneer. Mr. Crandall’s self-serving justification of private school funding confirms again the old saw that there are three kinds of lies - lies, damned lies, and statistics! Mr. Crandall asserts that the removal of 81,000 students from the public education system “saves” the province $260 million per year. However, he knows as well as anybody else that the incremental cost of adding those 81,000 students back into the public school system will not cost the full amount of $6400 per student since schools, buses, teachers, and administrators are already in place. Or, looking at it

another way, if 81,000 students were added to the public system at the full funding rate of $6400 per student, the schools would have more money per student since many of the base costs won’t change with the then increased student population.

To really do the subject justice, Mr. Crandall should dig out some more statistics such as the total enrolment in B.C. schools so that we know what percentage are attending private schools. It would also be interesting to know how many school buildings are being under-used or shut down, and how much new construction would be required to accommodate the 81,000 students currently attending private schools.

Predator reminder Dear Editor: Invermere Companion Animal Network (ICAN) would like to once again remind you that cougars, birds of prey and coyotes are predators and are looking for small animals they can easily hunt and catch such as cats, bunnies, ferrets, guinea pigs, small dogs - basically any animal that is outside, unsupervised and is the right size to look tempting to a predator trying to find food.

During the springtime especially, predators start looking for prey to help feed their young. With the knowledge ICAN has gained in this area over the past six years, we can honestly say that many companion animals are targets for predators, causing many companions to be reported as missing this time of the year. Most are never found, or are found deceased.

Predators are not just cougars and coyotes. There are also owls and eagles who hunt from above. These wild animals can live and hunt right in all the towns in the valley and may venture in from surrounding areas to find food. Please keep your animal companions supervised when they are outdoors and, if possible, keep them indoors. If they enjoy the outdoors, we suggest walking them with a leash and/ or harness, or building a safe enclosure for them to enjoy the outdoors in (there are many inexpensive options on the Internet). Spaying and neutering your cat or . . . ‘Abolish’ from page 6 The bottom line is that universal public education is one of the key foundations of Canadian society, and any policy which seeks to deviate from this needs to be examined with a view to whether or not it improves Canadian society. In the case of funding for private schools, no advantage is obtained by Canadian society at large, and the harm to the public education system is easily demonstrated by looking at the out-flow of funds.

If we extrapolate the numbers to 160,000 or 320,000 enrolled in private schools, it is easy to see that public schools could quickly become cash

Some cougar safety tips from the District of Invermere - Never run or turn your back on a cougar; always watch the cougar and know where it is; give the cougar room to escape; pick up small children and small household pets; raise your arms to look bigger; act aggressively, and if possible throw rocks or sticks at the cougar.

Perhaps Mr. Crandell’s letter will serve to energize and motivate the public at large to protest against this policy of favouring the wealthy at the expense of the middle class. I suggest that the current Liberal government could be persuaded to abolish the funding of private schools if enough people demanded a change.

The fiasco over access to the Lower Canyon of the Kicking Horse River — which appeared on the verge of resolution just a few weeks ago — is still not settled, although the rapidly rising river, swollen with spring runoff, temporarily cooled any controversy and prevented what otherwise would have been a bitterly disappointing Victoria Day long weekend for rafting companies.

The reprieve was momentary, however, and the disagreement is set to reach fever pitch in a few days at a potentially massive protest rally.

The issue flared to national and provincial attention earlier this spring, with ripples extending down here to the Upper Columbia Valley, when rafting companies using the Kicking Horse River near Golden (including Radium Hot Springs-based Kootenay River Runners) where told by Canadian Pacific Railway they would no longer be able to access the river’s famed Lower Canyon by simply walking across the Canadian Pacific tracks to the put-in — something that rafting companies had been doing for decades, but which Canadian Pacific pointed out was trespassing and a liability issue.

The companies, the business community in Golden and the paddling community throughout the Kootenay region, as well as various municipal, regional, provincial and federal politicians estimated a massive economic fallout for Golden from the move and campaigned vigorously, pressing the rail company to come to some kind of agreement allowing rafting this summer.

These efforts had seemingly paid off when rafting companies were assured on April 22nd that they would be able to use the Lower Canyon starting on the Victoria Day long weekend (the usual beginning of rafting season), but to their surprise they found access barred by a locked gate, put up by Canadian Pacific, just prior to the long weekend.

A pitched battle over the lack of access was averted for a few weeks when the river in the Lower Canyon reached high levels more quickly than normal, making it unsafe for rafters during the long weekend and the following weekend. But when the river then dropped, the gate stayed up and the quietly bubbling issue ratcheted back up to a full boil again.

“The gate remained locked, but in the end it didn’t matter for the long weekend since the river rose to point that it simply wasn’t safe to run,” Tourism Golden executive director Joanne Sweeting told The Pioneer on Tuesday, May 31st.

She confirmed a week later, on Tuesday, June 7th, that the access for the rafting companies was still barred and that those supporting the rafting companies were planning a community-wide protest rally for Monday, June 13th.

Affected rafting operators also confirmed that the gate is still shut tight, but none knew when the issue might be resolved.

“They’ve (Canadian Pacific) put a gate up on the hill into the Lower Canyon, on their property. Basically you can pull off the (Trans Canada) Highway in your vehicle but you can’t get much farther than that,” Kootenay River Runners owner Ian Scheler told The Pioneer on Tuesday, May 31st. “I don’t know what’s happening.

We (the rafting companies) are in the dark.”

Mr. Scheler said that the rail company was not dealing directly with the rafting companies, but instead had made an agreement with the provincial government, and then the provincial government had made an agreement with the rafting companies.

“From what I understand the talks between the provincial government and Canadian Pacific broke down and it’s not looking good,” he said, adding Kootenay River Runners does not typically start running the Lower Canyon until early June (later than most of the other rafting companies) but that he would be “completely blown away” if he was able to start running that part of the river when he normally does.

On the positive side Mr. Scheler pointed out that the Upper Canyon of the Kicking Horse River, which is still accessible, is good all summer, but extremely so through all of June and into early July.

Golden-based Glacier Rafting Company owner Ryan Johanessen said, on Tuesday, May 31st, that the high water level that made the river unrunnable the previous two weekend had lowered.

“It’s dropped now, boats could be down there. But the gate is still up and still locked,” said Mr. Johanessen.

Area F honours top volunteers

By Eric Elliot Pioneer Staff From the rolling green hills of Northern Ireland to the frigid cold atmosphere of Canadian hockey rinks, it’s been an interesting journey for Graeme and Noelene Anderson who recently were awarded volunteers of the year for Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Area F. It’s been a decade since the Anderson family arrived here in the Columbia Valley in 2006. New to the area, it was their son Luke who brought the family into the hockey scene, signing up in the Windermere Valley Minor Hockey Association. It was at that time that they discovered the Rockies were looking for billet hosts for the team’s hockey players.

“Within half a day, we had two of them in our basement,” Mr. Anderson said.

From there, the newly arrived family immersed themselves in the local hockey team, learning how it was being operated by a very small number of people. After discovering that, all the while seeing a lack of audience, he said both he and Noelene decided to help out in any way they could to try and promote the team across the community.

“It became more of a social life,” he said. “The arena was the place to go if there was a hockey game on. We just felt that the kids that were playing here deserved a lot more recognition and someone had to step up and make that happen.”

The two put hours of work into overhauling and essentially creating a social media presence for the team on Twitter and Facebook while revamping the website to become much more user friendly. Before long, in 2012, Graeme was promoted as the vice-president of hockey operations while Noelene became the director of marketing and social media.

Mr. Johanessen said that as far as he knows both sides (the provincial government and Canadian Pacific) are still meeting with each other and negotiations are ongoing.

“We’re hopeful that a deal can be reached in the next week or so. It’s a little bit of a tough situation, but we’re still optimistic. Fingers crossed,” he said.

“It hasn’t been a big issue, since May is not usually the busiest time for us, but if it (the gate) stays closed, it’s going to have an effect. We need to know if we are going to lose access sooner rather than later, so that we can make adjustments, offer clients who have already booked trips with the option to

“It’s not just us. There’s a large group of volunteers past and present that do a lot of work. A junior hockey team can’t happen with just a few people. Music Fest kickoff at market

By Nikki Fredrikson Pioneer Staff A live performance by Big Eli B blues band, sponsorship opportunities, give aways and more will be at the Invermere Music Festival (IMF) Kickoff, set for Saturday June 11th at the Invermere Farmers and Artist Market location.

The kickoff gets underway at 9 a.m. and will go until 1 p.m.

“We’ll be there to sell tickets, we’re looking for volunteers, sponsorship and just general information about the event itself,” said Invermere Music Fest organizer Jami Scheffer.

The kickoff event gives the public the chance to get the super early bird ticket deal of $40 for both Friday and Saturday of the music festival. After the kickoff event tickets will go up to $50 for the weekend and eventually up to $60. The festival is family friendly and children 12 and under get into the festival free of admission. The IMF team will be selling tickets at the kickoff event out of the official yellow Volkswagen, which is the headquarters for the kickoff.

The kickoff also gives the public a chance to get involved with the festival by signing up for a volunteer position. Each volunteer shift is a minimum of four to five hours, with vol-

unteer positions ranging from pre-crew fest, beer gardens, Sunday workshop crew and post-festival crew just to name a few. The Invermere Music Festival is also looking for sponsors, with a variety of levels of sponsorship opportunities.

“The most inexpensive one with great benefits is $250, you end up with a pass to the festival,” said Ms. Scheffer.

Last year the Invermere Music Festival had an attendance of 500 people said Ms. Scheffer, this year they hope to have that number grow.

“Finally in the Columbia Valley we have a big festival, just like Salmon Arm and there’s lots of little towns that have big festivals. It’s our fourth annual, that’s our dream is to have a big festival here to bring people to town (an) economic driver, something for the locals to do and we’ve got the lake and the beach. It’s pretty awesome,” said Ms. Scheffer.

This year’s line up for the music festival includes: Royal Canoe, Anne Lou, High Kicks, Big Eli B Blues Band, Bend Sinister and more.

The kickoff event will be running all morning and into the afternoon on Saturday but the performance by Big Eli B will begin around 11 a.m. Tickets and sponsorships for the festival are available online at http://invermeremusicfest. com.

By Nikki Frekrikson Pioneer Staff Looking for something to do this weekend? Why not catch dinner and a show at the Royal Canadian Legion? Robert Larrabee will be performing at the Invermere Legion both Friday, June 10th and Saturday, June 11th.

“Robert Larrabee was born and raised here and he now lives, I think, in Medicine Hat. He does regularly have shows down in Vegas and he also tours throughout B.C. and Alberta,” said Ken Carlow of the Royal Canadian Legion.

Robert Larrabee is an impersonator and does performances of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Dean Martin and more. This weekend he will have two performances

for the public to come and enjoy with tickets available by pre sale and at the door.

“We’re taking advance tickets for Friday dinner and show. The dinner is at 6:30 p.m. and the show is at 8 p.m. for $36 including taxes. Saturday is a show only, the show time is at 8 p.m. and ticket is $21,” said Mr. Carlow.

Both shows will be able to accommodate 150 attendees, however dinner will only be available for 120 people. Roast chicken dinner with salad and dessert will be served. Friday night also has a show only option but it’s very limited so getting tickets in advance is advised.

As a seasoned entertainer the Robert Larrabee shows are a great kick off to the weekend to check out.

Tickets for the Robert Larrabee performance are available at the Legion after 4 p.m.

Farmers’ Market returns for another season

By Nikki Fredrikson Pioneer Staff Invermere Farmers’ and Artists Market is preparing for the beginning of the farmers market season. The first day of the 2016 market is Saturday June 11th.

The market last year had 65 vendors each week and Ken Carlow of the Royal Canadian Legion said this year there is more.

“It’s everything from produce to things people have made, jewellery people have made, all the historical market folks are there, the ones that have been there for many years,” said Mr. Carlow.

The downtown farmers market is a great place for both locals and tourists to visit during the summer. Invermere mayor Gerry Taft said it’s a great social activity and brings everybody downtown on Saturday mornings.

“In the busy period in the summer there’s literally thousands of people there. So the streets are just wall-to

-wall people, lots of music, artist busking. There’s freshly squeezed lemonade, a lot of fruit and produce so it’s a pretty happening place,” said Mr. Taft.

“There was an attempt for a market to go to the cross roads and then there was the market downtown. I think what that experience kind of came up with was how important the downtown is to the market and how important the market is to downtown, just that people want to come downtown even if they’re coming from the other side of the lake,” said Mr. Taft.

“That experience of coming into the town and walking around and then often people go to lunch, go to the beach, do things after so it’s kind of all part of the package.”

The market this year will run from Saturday, June 11th to Saturday, September 10th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Anyone interested in becoming a vendor at the Invermere Farmers and Artist market can register online or they can go to the Legion to get a hard copy of the vendors application.

Parkside Place celebrating with block party

By Nikki Fredrikson Pioneer Staff The businesses of Parkside Place are teaming up to bring a special event to the community on Saturday, June 18th.

The event is a block party, that brings family fun, sidewalk sales and live music to the area for the community to enjoy.

“We Parkside Place folks sat down and came up with some ideas one day at Circle Cafe. June tends to be one month where there’s less going on than May and July, which have long weekends. Just something for people to do in June,” said Bobbi Donahue, owner of The Trading Post.

The event will have a variety of activities and sales that will appeal to everybody in the community. Donahue said as it’s before Father’s Day the event is something that could be fun to bring dad out to. The Trading Post plans to

be linking up some stuff with Fathers Day for the block party. This event was created as a fun day for the community to get out and socialize.

Also involved in planning the event is Beth Neale owner of Rainbow Donkey Kids Clothing.“We thought we would celebrate that Parkside Place is full and we’ve got a lot of different and unique businesses there,” said Ms. Neale.

The Parkside Place Block Party has paired up with Family Dynamix for this event, who will be working on hand with a barbeque and will be collecting donations for the Purcell Wilderness Expedition for youth ages 13 to 18.

The businesses of Parkside Place encourage the public to join them Saturday, June 18th between 10 a.m and 3 p.m. for face painting, live busking performances and sidewalk sales. The Parkside Place group hopes to make this an

How to improve your credit score Most everyone has a credit score, but many people don’t understand how it is determined, or what it is good for. Here is some information about credit, why it’s important to maintain good credit, and what people can do to improve their credit scores.

Why is a good credit rating important?

Lenders want to loan money to borrowers who are most likely to repay it. Therefore, good credit is essential for borrowing.

A superior credit score allows for higher borrowing limits, more favourable interest rates and access to opportunities that those with poor credit do not have. Even those with high incomes but poor credit scores will find borrowing more difficult than someone who earns an average income but has excellent credit.

Credit reports list all of the loans a person has taken out in the last six years, as well as pertinent details such as whether debt payments were made on time, how much is owed, what the credit limit is on each account and a list of authorized credit grantors who have access to a person’s file.

How is credit built?

Building a good credit rating is accomplished in two easy steps: borrow money and then repay the money on time. This information is reported by the lending fi-

nancial institution to the credit bureau, to establish and maintain a person’s credit score.

Young people trying to establish a credit rating might consider applying for a credit card with a small credit limit of $500, using the card to make certain purchases, then paying off the card immediately using their online banking system.

Using a credit card this way is akin to a debit card, but allows him or her to start building a good rating.

How is credit maintained?

In addition to borrowing and repaying funds in a timely fashion, good credit is maintained by adhering to a few other factors.

First and foremost, a person must be mindful of his or her overall debt level. This is defined as the amount of credit a person has outstanding, as a percentage of their total credit limit. Being maxed out on several credit cards, even if minimum payments are being met, doesn’t reflect well on a person’s credit report.

People also need to be careful not to apply for too many different sources of credit. Excessive inquiries on an individual’s credit profile can give lenders cause for concern.

Along with meeting debt repayment requirements, people must ensure they are current on all bills and payments, as companies such as cellular phone and service

providers may access and report to the credit bureau as well.

How is credit damaged?

Credit is most often damaged when people borrow more money than they can repay, or fail to make regular payments on their debt. Instances of missed payments, and more serious events such as foreclosures and bankruptcies, show up on one’s credit report and contribute to a person’s overall credit score.

These mistakes can reflect poorly on a person’s credit rating, making borrowing more difficult, or impossible, as they are signs of financial irresponsibility to a prospective lender.

If people find that their credit card balance is getting out of hand and becomes difficult to pay down, they should consult with a banking representative. He or she may be able to recommend debt consolidation options, as well as negotiate a more favourable interest rate to help pay down the debt faster.

How can I check my credit?

Canadians can check their credit scores online through Equifax or TransUnion, or request a copy by mail. It is advisable for people to check their credit scores at least annually to ensure everything is in good order, to catch potential incidences of identity theft, and to facilitate favourable future borrowing conditions.

Perspective can make or break you M etaphysical usings

Life is full of choices, decisions and experiences, all of which we create ourselves. This may not be easily accepted by many, but if indeed you do accept it, then it will give you the power to create what you want in life. A key factor to making things easy is your attitude or your perspective on things.

Say you have a tough experience that was particularly difficult for you to overcome. Have you noticed that having a pessimistic attitude resulted in anything good happening? Likely not, more likely it made things worse and instead of one thing going wrong, it was one thing after another going wrong. Your choice of attitude in each moment sets the stage for future moments.

Having friends to talk to, and who listen, when you are having “one of those moments” is a big part of moving through and getting on with things. It is a good friend who steers you back onto your path and does not wallow with you. Surrounding yourself with people who can empathize with you but also understand how your perspective can make or break you, is very important. They are the ones who are able to make you feel heard but gently guide you back to the fact that this too shall pass. Even if it is tragic, wouldn’t it

feel better with a smile on your face and a lighter heart?

Oh I get it that nobody wants to hear “oh things will get better…” when they are in the middle of a gruelling situation, believe me. I also know that when I feel heard, but my friend does not allow me to talk in a negative way about myself or others, I always feel better afterward.

Everything in life goes easier when you go with the flow. Take it as it comes, resist less, relax more and you will find things go smoothly. Working with children will show you this firsthand and you can see immediate results with them.

Take for example, you wake up late and you are majorly flustered. You are nagging at the kids to hurry and get ready but they are tuning you out, because of your crazed energy. You become more frustrated and you then have a major blowout.

They look at you with big eyes or they melt into a puddle of tears not really understanding what happened or why.

We may feel it is worry and aggression that will solve problems but it only makes them worse. However if we slow down and stay in the moment, with intention, things will end up better for us and all those around us.

ActiveKids promotes healthy lifestyle Submitted If you are looking for something for your children to do once school is finished, ActiveKids Summer Camp is a great choice! I am so excited to offer a program for children between the ages of five and 11 years of age. As Lead Camp Coordinator, with an Early Childhood Education background my goal is to provide fun outdoor activities each week where children can play and explore the valley around them.

ActiveKids is a camp designed for all children with the intent to promote a healthy lifestyle, practical life skills and hands on learning activities.

The camp is in session weekdays for the month of July as well as three weeks in August, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Parents are welcome to register children daily or by week depending on their needs by calling 250-688-0519

or by email to candaceivanco@yahoo.ca. Drop-ins are welcome, however spaces are limited. Drop off and pick up locations are still being finalized since it’s been difficult to find a space that is available for short-term use.

If you are wondering what activities are planned, parents and children can see what is happening week to week by checking out the Facebook Page, ActiveKids Summer Camp. Some of these activities include hiking, biking, swimming and volunteering within the community that provide endless learning opportunities.

This camp is mainly outdoors which does require children to come prepared for any type of weather. Lastly, parents are asked to provide a healthy, litter-less cold lunch with enough snacks and water to fuel your child for the day.

ActiveKids promises to provide an unforgettable experience for your child as they build new friendships and memories in the great outdoors of this beautiful valley.

Adventure Radium fun for all Submitted Adventure Radium is a summer program offered through the Village of Radium Hot Springs. The program runs Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, during the months of July and August. It is not an all-day summer camp, but rather a summer program, divided into a morning session and an afternoon session. The sessions are two and a half hours long. The morning session is tailored for younger participants, age five to seven/eight years old, and the afternoon session is tailored for kids eight years and older. These separate sessions allow the leaders to create games, crafts and activities geared towards the ages and abilities of the two groups. If you have a child whose age may allow them to join either group, we advise you to consider your child’s ability level when deciding which group he/she would be most comfortable in. If in doubt, ask our leaders for their recommendation! After all, it is our priority that each child has the best possible experience at Adventure Radium!

At Rocky Mountain Sports Camp (RMSC), your kids will have the opportunity to enjoy all of the wonders of Invermere B.C. Campers will paddle down the Columbia River through the wetlands where they will see many types of native wildlife. They will learn canoe skills and learn to kayak on Lake Windermere and have fun playing games at the nearby beaches. Campers will mountain bike on the Junior Johnson trail, swim in Lake Lillian and learn about building shelters. RMSC has experienced staff and a lifeguard on duty for each water activity. Each week campers will go through team building games, which will help create a strong group

atmosphere. New for 2016 we will be introducing a Leader in Training Program (LIT) for those 12 years and up. The LIT program challenges youth to develop personal leadership qualities through sport and games with the guidance from our experienced RMSC staff. With sessions on communication, teamwork, professionalism and goal setting, campers are encouraged to explore and develop their own strengths as well as identify areas in their lives to apply these skills. Camp Springs’ Kids Camps open at Fairmont

By Eric Elliott Pioneer Staff As the days run by with the end of school rapidly approaching, parents are looking for new and exciting activities to entertain their kids during the regular school hours. Camp Springs’ Kids Camp offered by Fairmont Hot Springs Resort, are just what you are looking for. Kids ages 5-12 are invited to take part in the camps that will start on June 29th and run to August 31st, conveniently the time kids are out of school. BC Rockies Adventures – the Resort’s in-house adventure team, will be running the camp out of the Camp Springs Cabin, located behind the main Resort lodge. Both full-day (9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and include lunch) and halfday camps (9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.) are available for parents who are looking for different programs.

Rachel Dick, marketing coordinator for the Resort, said that these day camps are fabulous for all kids because each day offers a unique and exciting theme from Monday

to Friday – there is something for everyone!

On Monday it will be Wet and Wild, Tuesday Mad Science, Wednesday Wilderness Survival, Thursday Fun with Sports and Friday All About Animals.

“Our camps are great for vacationers, locals and second homeowners who are here during the summer and are looking for something fun and different for their kids to do during the week. Parents are able to leave their children with our super friendly BC Rockies Adventures team without a worry.”

The resort also offers Golf and Adventure Camps which include certified CGPA instructed golf sessions and golf at their Creekside Par 3 course, kayaking, sports,access to their natural mineral hot springs and much more,” she said.

Kids tee off on summer!

By Eric Elliott Pioneer Staff Golfing can be a challenging game to get into, especially for young kids growing up in the valley. Lucky for them, there will be an array of golf camps to sign up for in hopes of learning more about the game and improving on the sport this summer.

The Ridge at Copper Point for example will be running several Nike Junior Golf camps this summer, covering all aspects of golf from general rules on the course, course etiquette, putting, chipping, sand play and the dynamics of the strong full golf swing. They have divided the three-day camps into two levels, Level one (ages 5-9) and Level 2 (ages 10-18) with more hours of instruction from PGA of Canada certified golf professionals in the Level 2 program.

Costs for the Level 1 program are $79.00 with Level 2 costs increasing to $99.00 and will run Tuesday through Thursday in July and August depending on the level of course.

Copper Point is also running a, “Players Camp,” from July 19-21st for kids aged 13-18. This course offers a more in depth golf program for developing young athletes who are looking to fine tune their golf skills. Shot Shapers Golf Academy at the Windermere Valley Golf Course also offers junior camps that run Tuesday through Thursday each week throughout July and August as well.

Like Copper Point, they have divided the camps into juniors (ages 5-9) who play from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and juniors (ages 10-16) who play from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The camps will teach golf etiquette in addition to the most common rules of golf that various levels of the sport require.

hiring Andrea Smillie as the Water Smart Ambassador to lead education and water conservation efforts throughout the community. Ms. Smillie is the first Water Smart Ambassador for Invermere who will focus her efforts on outdoor water usage, specifically residential irrigation which accounts for nearly half of residential water usage during the summer months and significantly influences the “peak demand.”

Ms. Smillie said that the key will be to increase education for residential property owners on ways to reduce their summertime water consumption for gardens and lawns in order to decrease the amount of water used for irrigation which reduces the overall stress on the water system.

Part of her work entails hosting outreach booths in hopes of people signing up for irrigation assessments on their properties. Essentially, these assessments allow her to provide property owners with the information they need to maximize the efficiency of their water consumption when watering their gardens and lawns.

She said that having an irrigation assessment isn’t absolutely necessary but given that it’s free, it’s a great way to learn more about your personal water consumption. “It’s pretty great as a homeowner to have someone who’s been trained in this to come onto your

property and assess your soil and property,” she said.

“Some people will be doing it pretty effectively and it’s nice to know you’re doing it effectively as well so I don’t think there’s any downside to having an assessment done on your system.”

Another component to the program for Ms. Smillie will be bylaw education for town residents. In this, she will be surveying neighbourhoods to make sure there aren’t homes watering outside the acceptable hours. If caught not complying with the bylaw, she will be putting a yellow reminder flag on the lawn as a reminder to respect the bylaw put in place to conserve water.

Since the program’s inception three years ago, the District of Invermere has achieved a 21 per cent decrease in gross community water demand. Ms. Smillie said that the benefits for these water conservation efforts will extend beyond the town’s water system.

“I think it will be saving people money and hopefully will be saving a lot of water,” she said, noting that they discovered people were using three times as much water as they actually needed. “We’re looking into the future at this point. We’re trying to stay resilient to climate change so that is kind of on the radar for Invermere.”

S OBITUARY S Carscadden, Elizabeth Mae 1946 – 2016 We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Betti Carscadden. As a mother, sister, spouse, grandma and friend she was light in our every day.

Her positivity, unconditional support and love will be profoundly missed.

Betti enjoyed life to its fullest and filled her days by surrounding herself with those she loved. She and Keith’s home was a hub of activity with friends and family always warmly welcomed… and always fed. She was the ultimate host.

Spending time kayaking, hiking and skiing were some of her favorite ways to enjoy the Windermere Valley. Having grown up in Windermere, and then retiring here in 1999, Betti had a deep connection and love for the valley. It was in Red Deer, Alberta that Betti and Keith lived, worked and raised their family. Betti loved that community and the wonderful connections she made in Red Deer have lasted way beyond her time there.

She is survived by her husband Keith, brother Bob, son Kevin (Angela), daughter Julie (Duncan), and her five grandchildren, Emmett, Stirling, Rio-Belle, Aria and Kada. She is predeceased by her parents, Dix and Gertie Anderson and by her son, Jay. A Celebration of Life was held at Copper Point Resort’s, Quartz Grand Hall on Thursday, June 9th, with Rev. Laura Hermaken presiding. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory can be made to the Salvation Army or to a local charity of choice.

Our eating disorder Fresh old ideas

By Arnold Malone Pioneer Columnist My Mother was a good cook and I was the judge. Also the threshing crews, with eight men at the table, frequently finished a meal, wipe their strong hands on their bid overalls, and gushed, “Boy that sure was a good meal, Florence.” Harvesters are world-class culinary critics.

Mother always cooked big. In normal times she had a husband and six children to feed. In seasonal periods, when hired help was required, it was just a matter of more food. Yet, I can never recall her ever fretting about the food she prepared except her unending concern about whether or not she had prepared enough.

Her attitude towards food differs sharply from the worrywarts of today.

Now people stand in aisles reading labels and fretting about nutrition and safety.

If that wasn’t enough they also concern themselves with where it came from, how far it has traveled, who the farmer or fisher was, and with a doubtful mind consider whether it was produced according to some ever-changing urban standard. Most people who influence these standards don’t know the difference between a Hereford and a heifer.

Our long history of eating has entered a wonky culture. We can’t simply eat and enjoy but rather feel the need to fret because thousands of messy messages are bombarding us about food.

Now, food has moral values. Food has become a religion with a thousand faiths and a hundred thousand preachers. Every newsstand has a flood of food stories. Weekly new diets appear. Some offer super foods for more energy and a longer life. Others warn of foods that will kill you in a fortnight while others recommend foods that will allow you to play skip-a-rope at age one hundred and ten.

How the simple act of eating became so complicated is anybody’s guess.

There is an absurdity regarding all of our worries over what we eat. It shouldn’t be

that way; we have been eating for a million years. Today we don’t just make dinner we agonize about our selection, our preparation and apologize if some aspect doesn’t jive with this month’s fad.

In 2002 a report signaling some concerns about carbohydrates greatly shrunk North Americas bread consumption. It put a good number of bakers out of business. Bread has been a staple for human diets prior to biblical times.

In 1977 a USA Senate Committee warned against eating red meat.

More recently, a modest intake of meat is recommended. In Canada less than one per cent of the population is celiac sensitive yet a much larger percentage choose gluten free foods at stores and restaurants. They think gluten is harmful. A recent study indicates that small children may be disadvantaged from the lack of gluten in their diet.

Dr. Atkins is only one in a long list of others who have advocated a diet that ultimately was harmful. At one time we learned that eggs were bad for us because they contained cholesterol. Some years later we learned that the cholesterol in eggs was the ‘good’ cholesterol.

Currently we dizzy ourselves in a squirrel cage of un-ending foolish food fads.

Every time urban persuasion pressures a new food choice the cost of food goes up.

When the cost goes up, another slice of lower income persons need to search for cheaper foods. Too often that means starches and fats. Protein is being priced out of affordability.

Food should be a joyous celebratory part of our lives. A time for families to gather in conversation and have the pleasure that is derived from wonderful tastes.

Eating should be a moment for conversation and relaxation. It should also be a time when we trust our family history and our instincts and dismiss those money-grubbers who torment us with exaggerated claims.

Uses of the Lake highlights summer at the museum Curator’s Corner

By J.D. Jeffery Museum Curator The museum is now open summer hours, everyday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This year we will be featuring the “Uses of the Lake”; this topic will highlight displays in the Lord’s Cabin and our newest building, the Ice House.

On Saturday, June 11th join us at our open house as we will have a guest speaker talking about our lake and after refreshments will be served.

Continuing with the water theme, this month I am highlighting some smaller creeks that were named in 1960 by the Canadian Board of Geographic Names. This board approves the choice of names of a geographic feature and records it for future use on maps in an area.

Paul Creek is a tributary of the Kootenay River, where Edward Paul, a young Shuswap Indian Band member, was killed in the summer of 1960 while fighting a fire.

The creek is located in the Vermilion Range of mountains, about three miles northwest of Floe Lake. This creek was the site of an extensive forest

fire that Edward Paul was part of. He was one of the firefighting crew members who successfully controlled it.

The following four creeks are small tributaries of Horsethief Creek. Fan Creek is located between McDonald Creek and Stockdale Creek and is named because of the pronounced fan or delta at its mouth. Edouard Creek is named after Edouard Feuz, a Swiss guide who climbed in the area in the early 1900s. This creek is the principal north fork of Stockdale Creek and leads to a mountain pass into Howser Creek. Paulding Creek, so named for Paulding Farnham, an early day mountain climber in the area, is a small stream on the southerly side of Horsethief Creek just downstream from Farnham Creek.

Haultain Creek, named after a topographic surveyor of this area between 1912 and 1913. This creek crosses the Horsethief Road between the Starbird Ranch and Gopher Creek.

As carefree as a bird

By Pastor Murray Wittke Valley Christian Assembly We recently replaced the worn out welcome mat at our home in Radium. The last five years we’ve had lots of visitors.

Many arrived with wings and feathers.

Each spring the finches, chickadees and nut hatches are the first to come calling. They’re soon followed by hummingbirds, red wing blackbirds, Bohemian waxwings and juncos. All these join the pileated and downy woodpeckers, flickers and nutcrackers that hang around all winter. And the crows… well they’re noisy, get into everything and just never know when it’s time to leave!

Nevertheless, our fine feathered guests with all their colourful clothing and joyful songs bring a great peace to our home. Watching and listening to them I’ve learned a valuable lesson.

I’m not sure why but I’ve always felt very respon-

sible for everyone and everything. I’ve always felt compelled to get everything right and work hard at making life work.

I’ve also felt the need to be strong even while struggling on the inside with weariness, self-doubt, and disappointment. Too many of my days have been filled with stress, pressure, and worry. Perhaps you’ve felt this way too.

One day Jesus spoke to a group of people anxious about life. He said… “Don’t worry about your life.

Don’t worry about having something to eat, drink, or wear. Look at the birds, free and unfettered, careless in the care of God. They don’t plant or harvest.

They don’t even store grain in barns. Yet your Father in heaven takes care of them. Aren’t you worth more than birds?”

The last five years I’ve spent a lot of time in the company of birds, watching, listening and considering their lives. Greeting the morning with a song and lifting their voice as they soar on the evening breeze they live without a worry in the world.

It’s true; we are influenced by the company we keep. My guests have taught me about contentment within God’s care. Trusting my Heavenly Father to provide and do what’s best with my life, I’m learning how to live as carefree as a bird.
