Valley community rallies in support of fire relief

By Eric Elliott Pioneer Staff Residents of Fort McMurray, Alberta had their worst dreams realized on May 3rd as an out-of-control wildfire ripped through the city and surrounding area, destroying thousands of homes in its wake.

That Tuesday afternoon, the city was placed under mandatory evacuation with 80,000 people forced to flee from their homes, with warnings, in some cases, of only 30 minutes. As of May 10th, the fire, stretching over

85,000 hectares, destroyed 2,400 buildings with 25,000 saved by relief efforts.

In the Columbia Valley, local businesses are joining together to do what they can to help their Alberta neighbours.

Invermere Home Hardware, for example, is collecting materials to bring to the thousands affected by the tragedy.

Owner Al Miller said the team at Home Hardware decided quickly to begin collecting new clothing, nonperishables, cash and gift certificates to be personally delivered to a location that is best suited for drop-off. He said the decision to help the people of Fort McMurray

was an easy one for him and his team.

“We believe, that in a lot of cases, we are the vacation spot for a lot of those people who work there so we believe we have a very close connection,” Mr. Miller said, mentioning that he knows a fellow Home Hardware owner in Fort McMurray who was forced to leave his place of business like everyone else. To date, the store has raised nearly $600 in cash with a full skid of materials to deliver.

Horsepower limit proponent corrects misinformation

Transport Canada’s public comment period on the proposed 20-horsepower limit for the main stem of the Columbia River may have closed a few weeks ago, but discussion on the matter continues to swirl in the Upper Columbia Valley, and proponents of the regulation are not only attempting to make their views known, but also frequently trying to clarify that the horsepower limit would not apply to Lake Windermere or Columbia Lake.

Several sources have conveyed, incorrectly, that the lakes would be part of the proposed regulations, including a notice sent to homeowners in Timber Ridge by Timber Ridge Property Owners Association president Tony Schneider and association marina director Ray Bojakli.

“With recent changes to federal regulations of our waterways (local environ-

mental group and horsepower limit proponent) Wildsight has once again started to push to have powerboats banned from Lake Windermere,” wrote the pair in the notice, adding they were sending the letter as a call-to-action, and directing all community residents to the www.columbiarivervalley.com website (set up by horsepower limit opponents to outline their cause).

“The Timber Ridge Board strongly objects to removing powerboats from the lake and will take every action possible to make sure our community voice is heard,” the pair wrote in the letter.

Wildsight executive director Robyn Duncan told The Pioneer that there has been a fair bit of such misinformation.

RCMP Report Submitted by Cpl. Grant Simpson Columbia Valley RCMP Columbia Valley RCMP responded to approximately 50 calls for service over the past week. Here are just a few of them: • On Thursday, May 5th at 6:47 a.m., Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of a male screaming in the Black Forest Trail area of Invermere. The complainant reported that she could hear a male screaming and grunting for the past two hours. She could not see anyone and could only hear him. She was concerned as it was morning and children in the area would be taking the bus to school. Police arrived on shift and conducted patrols in the area with negative results. Police attempted to contact the local complainant for further information however they had already left for work. It is suspected that a male known to police was the subject of complaint as he had been witnessed in the area during the morning and appeared to be high on drugs. He was later observed in Tim Hortons and the Home Hardware however not located by police. No further reports were received throughout the rest of the day.

• On Friday, May 6th at 7:17 a.m., Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of a stolen vehicle from a driveway in the 4900 block of Stevens Avenue in Canal Flats.

The complainant, a 30-year-old local male, reported that his black 1997 Dodge 2500 pickup truck had been stolen overnight. He reported that there was no gas in the tank and it would have had to have been towed or pushed.

There was no licence plate attached to the vehicle either.

Prior to attendance, police received an update that the owner had located the vehicle near the Canal Flats Mill.

He had gotten a can of gas and driven the truck home.

The owner did not have any suspects or witnesses and did not want the matter investigated any further. He also did not have the VIN number for the vehicle as he had recently purchased it from a male in Alberta. The file number was provided to the owner for insurance purposes.

• On Saturday, May 7th at 7:48 a.m., police received dispatch of a break and enter and theft that occurred overnight to a business in the 5000 block of Riverview Road in

Fairmont Hot Springs. The complainant, a female employee, reported that sometime overnight, the back door had been pried open and an automated teller machine was stolen from the main hallway of the building. She advised that they did not have any suspects or witnesses, but did have surveillance on site. Police attended and met with the employee. The footage was reviewed and showed two subjects entering the hallway wearing dark clothing, gloves and hoods over their heads. They approached the machine and were able to rock it loose from the bolts holding it to the ground.

The two subjects then carried the machine out of the back door. Cranbrook RCMP’s Forensic Identification Services were consulted with, but did not attend due to the fact the suspects wore gloves and did not touch anything else. Police requested that the employee review the surveillance footage from the prior days to determine whether anyone suspicious had been casing the area. This investigation is possibly related to another theft of a pickup truck, which police are also investigating.

• On Saturday, May 7th at 11:11 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP received dispatch of a theft of a vehicle, which occurred overnight in the 7400 block of Revelstoke Avenue in Radium Hot Springs. The complainant reported that her grey 2014 Lexus IS had been stolen from her driveway overnight. She advised that it had been left unlocked with the keys inside of it. The vehicle had gas in it and she did not have any suspects or witnesses. She had also left her driver’s licence and a bankcard inside the vehicle along with $500 in cash.

She was advised to cancel the bankcard and was provided with a police file number. The vehicle owner advised that she did not hear anything overnight and there was nothing left behind. The vehicle information was sent to the surrounding detachments for their patrols. The vehicle was also added to the police computer databank. Multiple vehicles were broken into overnight in the Radium Hot Springs area and another vehicle was stolen from Stanley Street. Investigation into these matters is ongoing. Police are reminding everyone to be vigilant in the prevention of this type of property crime by leaving nothing valuable in parked vehicles and to ensure that they are locked and secure.

At this time, the valley is once again a fundraising mecca, with construction on the new Columbia Valley Centre about to start (as fundraising is needed for many of the bells and whistles that will make it a state-of-theart facility) plus the heart-warming generosity and support the local community is offering people and pets in Fort McMurray who need help — on top of what’s needed to make the Westside Legacy Trail a reality as construction is slated to begin this summer.

This past week, our Pioneer/Valley Echo team finished the 2016-2017 Valley Beat events magazine, just in time for the May long weekend, when you will find it on stands up and down the Columbia Valley. Of course, we think this year’s issue is another fantastic addition to a publication series that’s now in its fourth year.

David Thompson Secondary School teacher and local artist Maegan Stanbury provided us with this year’s cover — a fabulous portrayal of the valley’s year-round activities with a four-season theme that mirrors the fourseason calendar format the magazine is known for.

Her cover artwork, created specifically for this year’s Valley Beat, has been mounted and framed by The Artym Gallery and is set to be auctioned off at the Run, Ride and Rock the Ranch fundraiser for the Westside Legacy Trail that’s taking place at the K2 Ranch on Saturday, May 21st. Sister Lake in UK serves as example Dear Editor: I have heard it all before. I was living in the English Lake District in the ‘80s, ‘90s and early 2000s when Windermere was going through seemingly never-ending rounds of heart rending, public inquiries and trial by press about speed controls.

Eventually, a speed limit of 12 miles per hour (about 17 kilometres per hour) was introduced with no power restrictions. The speed limit is rigorously enforced.

Some of the reasons for very vocal public support for the ban were noise, wake damage and crass stupidity of a very small minority of powerful watercraft operators.

The most stupid and tragic incident involved a speedboat, a water skier and the death of a young girl in a small craft who was all but decapitated by the ski tow.

I worked with a mechanical engineer of some standing who explained to me the sound problems.

Internal combustion engines of all kinds generate a “square” sound wave — that is, a wave pattern, when viewed on an oscilloscope, that has vertical and horizontal elements without curves between those elements. Higher revs change the frequency and volume.

When the wave becomes spiky (when the vertical is a longer line than the horizontal), the sound becomes more intrusive.

Golf club issues challenge Dear Editor: During the afternoon of Thursday, May 5th, the Windermere Valley Men’s Club held its weekly competition. Our thoughts were not on golf, but rather on the families displaced by the fires raging in northern Alberta.

At the conclusion of the event, our membership decided to donate the prize money that would normally have gone to the afternoon’s winners to the disaster relief efforts currently being undertaken.

It goes without saying that higher revs equal nasty spiky waves.

A widely held view amongst many in favour of the UK Windermere speed ban was if the noise was dealt with, the protests would be more sympathetic towards the power boat lobby. Simply put, mufflers might have saved the day. However, testosterone prevailed and the speedsters lost.

Many powered watercraft are, to me, offensive. Noisy, smelly and dirty. The pall of fumes hanging low on the water makes a paddle on the lake out of the question.

The noise is disgusting. We would not allow this volume on our roads. Similarly, we do not tear up and down the highway making unregulated manoeuvres that appear to be the norm on the lake.

Poor maintenance is probably the greatest cause of pollution by boats on the Columbia and Windermere Lakes. There is no excuse for poor maintenance.

Why do we still allow two-cycle

Speed generates a wake, and wakes damage the shoreline. The wake will be proportional to speed, power and size of the vessel. I understand that a big speedboat, designed to plane, when travelling slowly can produce a disproportionately large wake. I presume that the wake damage is in proportion to proximity to the shoreline, the size of the body of water and speed of the craft. I would assume, then, that a riverine shore is far more vulnerable than a lakeshore, and a steep bank more vulnerable than a beach.

It is self-evident, to me, that controlling speed, size and power on the Columbia is desirable at every level.

To finish, the UK ban protesters cited loss of business of boat sales, boat maintenance and an expected drop in visitor numbers as reasons not to restrict the speed. Quite the contrary.

There are more watercraft on the lake than ever before, mainly sail and HPV, more sales of sails and all that goes with them, and no complaints on visitor numbers, unless it’s to say too many. May (not so) common sense prevail.

Facility fundraising explained Submitted by Justin Atterbury Councillor DOI/Chair CV Fundraising Committee We had some great news a couple of weeks ago when District of Invermere (DOI) council awarded the contract to build the new Columbia Valley Community Centre to Rendeck and Assoc. This project has taken over 20 years to get to this point and I believe this is cause for celebration.

After the announcement there seems to be some confusion as to what the costing includes and what is still being fundraised. There also seems to be confusion as to what the meaning of building shell is and why the library isn’t outfitted like the rest of the building. As chairperson of the Fundraising Committee for the new centre, please allow me to provide some clarity.

A project of this scale in a community of this size can be a major drain to the taxpayer if no fundraising efforts are made. Our goal at the DOI was not to exceed the $100 parcel tax in Invermere that allowed us to borrow $5.6 million to help fund this facility. Based on costs estimates four years ago, we knew $5.6 million along with some financial aid from our regional partners would get us close to our goal of building the facility we believed would serve the needs of this valley for decades to come.

We now know that the building will cost $8.55 million, including the construction contract of $7.45 million, architectural costs of $900,000 and project management costs of $200,000. This will be funded by $5.6 million from DOI, $625,000 from RDEK, $500,000 from CBT and a UCBM grant of $2 million. This total funding of $8.725 million will leave a small surplus of $175,000 for contingencies and startup.

The cost to outfit the library was not included in our tender budget. The Invermere Public Library currently has $189,000 in its savings account for the construction of a new facility. When the opportunity arose to move to the new facility, the Library Board decided to use the funds they had saved up to do the leasehold improvements instead of going to referendum to raise more money through more taxation to build a separate facility of their own.

Since the shell of the library is being built and the cost estimates to outfit the inside of the library are approximately $147,000, the library is in a strong financial position to complete the space.

That being said, if the library is able to take in more donations from passionate library goers, then the library will be able to invest in more shelving, nicer furnishings and more inventory of books, etc. All of these things will add to a greater library experience. The Invermere Public Library is currently running a “Buy a Shelf, Buy a Chair” campaign.

For the four years we have been working on this project, the Columbia Valley Advisory Committee has been consistent in saying we know we can afford the construction of the building (or shell) through our parcel tax and funds from our regional partners. What goes in that shell is up to the user groups that are requesting the items.

The whole building will have the interior finished with lights and speakers, etc. To increase the user experience of

this facility, there are requests to purchase items to make the hall more functional. Our goal is not to put this burden directly on to the taxpayer, but rather to raise the money through fundraising efforts with opportunities for private donors and corporations to step forward as well as support from the user groups to help us reach our goals.

The largest request comes from the Arts Consortium via our architect’s theatre consultant to add additional lighting/sound features and AV (audio/video) equipment for live performance with a large dropdown screen for movie showings, etc. All of the infrastructure to plug these items in will be in place when construction is completed and the cost of this infrastructure is included in the price of the building.

When the money is raised, these items can be purchased, plugged in and played as soon as they arrive. The additional lighting, sound, screen and A/V equipment comes to approximately $400,000. These items will enhance performances in our new facility, but keep in mind that if we are unable to raise the funds to purchase them, the space is still fully functional for performances. It’s similar to having a home theatre system attached to your living room TV. Your TV is fully functional without it, but if you can afford it, a home theatre system can add to the experience immensely if you have the funds to make the purchase.

Another big ticket item not included in the construction price is retractable seating for 228 people. This is another extremely useful item that will improve viewing, save space and make the Main Room truly multi-purpose. The price tag is approximately $350,000.

It would be a great addition and hopefully we can raise the money through our fundraising efforts by the time the building is complete to purchase it. To help offset the cost of the seating, we are selling seat sponsorships at $1,000 each.

This will enable your family name or business to be attached to any seat you purchase — a true lasting legacy. The third major item is the commercial kitchen, which can cost anywhere from $100,000 to $200,000 depending on the type of equipment we purchase — a great way to attract conventions and large events, which will help our region reach its goal of being a vibrant year-round community.

The fourth major item is the movable divider in the Main Room at $120,000. This will allow for the Main Room to be divided into two parts so that different groups can have functions going on at the same time. So far, we have $30,000 in funds for this item and we have interest from some local service clubs in helping us raise the rest.

Sixty-seven years ago, a large group of volunteers raised the money and volunteered their time to erect our existing Lake Windermere Memorial Hall to honour those in the valley who lost their life in the war. At a budget of $7,000, they completed the project in two years at a final cost of $11,000. (cost overruns even then). They built a lasting legacy in our community that lasted nearly seven decades and served the social needs of thousands upon thousands of valley residents.

Weddings, funerals, birthday parties, the list is endless.

I can only hope that we all strive to honour the legacy handed down by these volunteers and put our best effort into supporting the construction of this new amazing facility.

The well-detailed May 6th article about herons in decline mentioned predation by bald eagles. Another bird harassing herons is the osprey, at least in my experience watching herons and osprey at Dorothy Lake the last few years.

As a kind of scientific experiment during these years, when either a heron or I would first show up, I have used the exact same greeting call each time to see if they distinguish the call from people generally talking. Seems at least one heron does. As does an osprey in the same area, too. Several instances bear this out, but here is one that illustrates the heron harassment issue.

I often park between Pynelogs and Dorothy Lake to watch the kingfisher, any heron, muskrat, ducks, turtles, fish, deer, a skunk once, and sunset reflections.

This particular time, a lot of screeches and squawking occur and I turn to see an osprey dive-bombing a heron on the far log.

I call out “hey osprey” and immediately it flies over me as I tell it to leave the heron alone, there is enough water and fish for both. The osprey immediately leaves for ten minutes. Hmm, coincidence I wonder?

Then it is back, dive-bombing the heron again in a great kerfuffle of harsh swoops, wing-flapping and noise. Again I call out, “hey osprey”. Immediately, it glides overhead, eyeing me and I say to it firmly “I am still here”. The osprey leaves the area and stays away for at least half an hour!

The heron has great peace. I do wonder, however, if the same osprey is back this year (there is a recurring osprey nest atop a nearby human-placed pole) and is it giving the heron grief sometimes when yours truly doesn’t see it? And I wonder to what extent ospreys should have human-provided nesting sites next to known heron feeding sites when herons are in decline?

Mind you, I have also praised an osprey (the same one?) who, dangling a fish it had just caught and hearing me call, “hey osprey”, immediately turned 90 degrees, flew slowly right over me with its prize, then after I said “oh what a lovely fish” it turned sharply again and hurried on its original direction nestward with its marvellous, show-off prize fish — no way the heron’s!

Two raptors to be released during Wings festival

By Eric Elliott Pioneer Staff As part of the 20th annual Wings over the Rockies festival this week, spectators will have the chance to view two raptors being rehabilitated into the wild on Sunday, May 15th.

The release is all part of Project Take Flight Raptor Rehabilitation Flight Cage, which allows formerly injured raptors to learn to fly once their injuries have healed. Commonly known as birds of prey, raptors include a number of species such as hawks, eagles, osprey and harriers, to name a few.

May 13, 2016 16th annual Kids Ride program kicks off Local junior cyclists are being called out for the start of the 2016 biking season as the 16th annual Kids Ride program will begin on Wednesday night at 6 p.m.

The group started in 2001 as a way for kids to get out and ride their bikes while learning some of the skills necessary to co-operate with one another on the trails and in the skate park. Becca Wright, one of the organizers, said that etiquette in the skate park is one of the important lessons for kids to learn in the program.

“One of the biggest things that we’ve got back from parents is that a lot of the adults ride in the community, but they’re not skate park-oriented so they sometimes don’t know the etiquette of it and how to interact in a skate park,” Ms. Wright said. “Even though they’re cyclists, they really appreciate having someone show them the ropes in terms of a different environment.”

Byron Grey, owner of Bicycle Works in Invermere, will lead the program, teaching kids skills in the skate park in addition to safety protocol like the proper way to cross crosswalks. Ms. Wright said the group usually has eight kids per week, but more are welcome to join the weekly ride on Wednesdays. She asks those attending the first event on May 18th to register at Bicycle Works or email bike_school@hotmail.com before meeting at the Bicycle Works location on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The cost of joining the program is $60, which covers the duration of the six-week course.

Curling Club flips into Roller Rink mode With the warm weather in May, it’s officially time to bid farewell to the curling season and welcome the opening of the roller rink at the Curling Club in Invermere.

On Friday, May 20th, the Invermere Curling Club will officially transform into the Invermere Roller Rink for the summer season, resuming a regular summer roller skating schedule with public skates on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. Admission for all ages will be $5, which covers the cost of rental skates. Manager Jason Stevens said he hopes the popularity from last season continues into the 2016 season, starting next weekend.

“I’m hoping that we’ll start where we left off and everyone can come out and enjoy a little throwback to the ‘70s and ‘80s,” he said. “To actually get out and just put some wheels on your feet isn’t something that you do everyday.”

He says one of the best qualities going for the Invermere Roller Rink is its capacity to provide people with entertainment no matter the weather this summer.

Connect ‘Source to Sea’ in Canal Flats

By Nicole Trigg Pioneer Staff Former Lake Windermere Ambassadors program co-ordinator Kirsten Harma, who is now working at the other end of the Columbia River in the U.S., is inviting people in the Columbia Valley to take part in the “Source to Sea” storytelling and film screening event in Canal Flats on Sunday, May 15th while an event takes place at the same time in Astoria, Oregon, which Ms. Harma is organizing.

“When I was working in Canada I hoped to find a way to connect the communities living at the Columbia River headwaters with those living ‘downstream’ in my native U.S. I’m really excited that this Source to Sea event is coming to fruition and is going to do just that,” she told The Pioneer.

The parallel Source to Sea events are hosted by the Columbia Basin Transboundary Youth Network (CBTYN), led by Tribal and non-Tribal young professionals.

Through Skype and social media, audiences will be connected to both events as they happen simultaneously at the headwaters and mouth of the Columbia River.

The Canal Flats event begins with a headwaters walk at 1 p.m. sharp (drive north on Grainger Road and then west on Beatty Avenue to trailhead). At 2:30 p.m., the storytelling and films begin at Canal Flats Civic Centre. Attendees will symbolically connect “source to sea” as the headwaters audience is linked online with the sister event happening at the same time at the mouth of the river. Similar to Home Hardware, the Sobeys grocery store in Invermere is also collecting money and is delivering much-needed supplies to the people of Fort McMurray. The Sobeys chain has also pledged to match all monetary donations to the Red Cross up to $100,000. Real Storage has been collecting toilet paper, personal hygiene items, infant supplies, blankets and towels, as well as footwear and suitcases/backpacks, and items can be dropped off at their site in Windermere. A truck carrying supplies left for Edmonton on May 10th. Real Storage stores across Alberta and in Windermere are also offering one-month free storage for any residents who need to store items after fleeing the fire.

Global Animal Lovers (GALs), the

local not-for-profit organization that advocates for animal rescue and safety, have also joined the effort, creating a document located on their Facebook page for people to fill out if they are able to provide emergency animal placement for pets and livestock that currently have no place to go.

The Station Pub and Invermere Fire Rescue will also be hosting a fundraiser on Friday May 20th at 8 p.m. at The Station Pub to support the victims of the fires.

Mr. Miller said it’s been automatic for people in the valley to help out in supporting Fort McMurray.

“We’ve got a hugely caring community here and with what’s transpired up there, this is a huge tragedy for a lot of people,” he said. “People in Invermere and the Columbia Valley have a heart so they’re going to get taken care of. These are our friends and we want to make sure they get taken care of.”

Environmental Assessment of the Proposed Crown Mountain Coking Coal Project

Open House and Invitation to Comment NWP Coal Canada Ltd. (Proponent) is proposing to develop an open pit metallurgical coal mine in the Elk Valley, referred to as the Crown Mountain Coking Coal Project (proposed Project). The proposed Project would be located approximately 12 km northeast of Sparwood, British Columbia, and it is estimated that it would produce 3.7 million run-of-mine tonnes per year.

The proposed Project is subject to review under British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Act. The Proponent must obtain an Environmental Assessment Certificate (EAC) before work can be undertaken on the proposed Project. Prior to the submission of an Application by the Proponent for an EAC, the Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) must approve the Application Information Requirements for the proposed Project.

As part of the Application Information Requirements, Valued Components must be identified, which are environmental, economic, social, heritage, and health components that may experience potential effects as a result of the proposed Project. The Valued Components are outlined in the Valued Components for Environmental Assessment document, which details components to be studied and the areas in which the studies would occur.

Contractor can do it all

By James Rose Special to The Pioneer After operating Fjordland Contracting for many years in Calgary, David Webster is glad to establish his company in the Columbia Valley as part of a full-time move to the warmer side of the Rocky Mountains that he and his wife recently made.

“My wife and I wanted to slow life down a little and we were familiar with the valley already as we have been coming out to the valley for the past 15 years, so for us it was either moving to the Columbia Valley or to the north end of Vancouver Island to semi-retire, and I think we made the right choice,” Mr. Webster said with a laugh.

With experience working as site supervisor for a major Calgary homebuilder early in his career, Mr. Webster felt confident in the early 1990s to establish his own contracting company and forge ahead as an independent contractor.

“Nineteen ninety-three was when Fjordland was first established and I knew that even if I didn’t have the expertise in a particular matter, that I

Hospice seeks volunteers Submitted by Maria Kliavkoff Hospice Society Executive Director In the past two and a half years, since the Hospice Society of the Columbia Valley began delivering End of Life Services, we have provided over 1750 visits to clients of the Columbia Valley. Our end of life visitors are a remarkable part of the extraordinary team that is Hospice.

The team includes those who have trained to be volunteer visitors for both our End of Life and our Bereavement programs.

To become a visitor requires 21 hours of training in each discipline. It takes a very particular type of person to sit with those who have had a terminal illness diagnosis, or those who have lost a loved one and are feeling lost themselves now. The rewards of doing the work have no measure. As one of our volunteers says: “It is such a privilege and honour to be in the presence of someone who is going through a profound journey. We are there to offer comfort, support and understanding in this time of difficulty so that they do not feel alone.”

Given the loss that our Valley has felt this past year, and what is being projected for the future, we know that there is an ever increasing need for our services. To insure that we can continue to serve end-of-life cli-

ents from the time of diagnosis and bereavement clients in their time of need we need more volunteer visitors to come forward.

We are currently accepting applications for our summer training programs. Interviews begin in May. We will be training Bereavement Visitors in June, End of Life Visitors in July and Bereavement Facilitators (those who lead Walk and Talk Groups and assist with the Bereavement Support Groups) in August. If you are interested, please contact the office for an application.

For those who would like to volunteer for Hospice in another way, please know that there is a place for you on our team.

Film documents life of famous valley resident

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff A film featuring the outrageous yet true stories of one of the Upper Columbia Valley’s most famous residents will be shown at Pynelogs.

The hour-and-a-half-long film centres around Canadian Mountain Holidays (CMH) co-founder Leo Grillmair (who, along with fellow co-founder Hans Gmoser, pioneered heliskiing) reminiscing about some of his more hair-raising exploits.

The project was the idea of valley resident David Goldsmith, who has been hiking with Mr. Grillmair for almost two decades.

“You would be sitting around the campfire listening to his stories — surviving a helicopter crash, falling under a train in Austria (where Mr. Grillmair was born) — and they are really quite amazing. Everybody always loved to hear them and eventually I realized this was something that should be caught on camera,” said Mr. Goldsmith.

Starting two years ago, Mr. Goldsmith began creating the film, shot in various locations in the mountains and in Mr. Grillmair’s home near Brisco, eventually compiling nearly 20 hours of what he calls “great storytelling.”

“But the video and sound were not great quality,” said Mr. Goldsmith, adding that local mountaineer and photographer Pat Morrow then agreed to help create a high-quality project.

The film is entitled Nine Lives Would Not Do: The Life of Leo Grillmair, Mountaineer. According to Mr. Goldsmith, the name “came about because I said to him one day, ‘Leo, your life is like a cat with nine lives.’ He responded ‘No — nine would not do’.”

“Who wouldn’t want to hear tales from somebody who has lived nine lives?” said Mr. Goldsmith.

Mr. Grillmair said he was a bit surprised when Mr. Goldsmith first asked to film some of his stories.

“At first, I thought it was a little ridiculous,” he told The Pioneer. “But when he showed it to me I thought actually he did a pretty good job. It made me stop and think — did I really do all those stupid things? But I guess I did.”

Perhaps the most exhilarating incident occurred not too long after Mr. Grillmair had moved to Canada. He was up in Alaska doing some geological sampling for a

Mr. Grillmair scaled a rock wall, took some samples and then discovered there was nowhere to attach his ropes for the descent and he was essentially stuck up on the wall.

The helicopter pilot below watched the scene unfold with binoculars and eventually flew up near the top of the cliff, although he had to keep a certain distance away so the helicopter’s rotor would not catch the rock, and asked Mr. Grillmair to jump in.

“Oh my goodness, there was quite a gap,” said Mr. Grillmair. “But at that point I’d never been in a helicopter, so I thought ‘Oh, I guess this is how they do it’.”

Further complicating the situation was the fact that the helicopter was so small and light that if Mr. Grillmair simply jumped into it, his weight would almost certainly tip it sideways in the direction of the rock wall and then the rotor would suck it against the cliff, smashing the helicopter and its occupants to bits. To counter that effect, the pilot had to swiftly and forcefully rotate the helicopter up and away in the opposite direction of the cliff, but he had to be careful to time this rotation to exactly match Mr. Grillmair’s leap.

Mr. Grillmair threw his bag of rock samples into the helicopter, the pilot readied to rotate, and then Mr. Grillmair jumped, landing with his feet on one of the helicopter’s pontoons and his hands gripping the door frame, all as the pilot timed his manoeuvre perfectly.

The escapade was likely the most dangerous in Mr. Grillmair’s career.

“I could have so easily tipped us both into the rocks or missed the helicopter altogether,” he said. “When we were flying back and the pilot told me not to tell anybody what we’d done, that was when I realized that’s not normally how helicopters work.”

There will be plenty more similar episodes in Nine Lives Would Not Do, according to both Mr. Goldsmith and Mr. Grillmair.

“The name is correct — nine would not have been enough, not the way I’ve lived my life. Holy smoke,” said Mr. Grillmair. “Somebody once told me I’ve been pretty lucky and I have. But luck also needs a little help. You have to keep your wits about you and think clearly in tricky situations; that makes a difference.”

The film will play at Pynelogs on Wednesday, May 25th and will be a fundraiser for the Columbia Valley Arts Council and the Hospice Society of the Columbia Valley. It will be shown in two parts, with the first focusing on Mr. Grillmair’s early years growing up in Austria and his life in Canada before mountaineering. Mr. Grillmair will chat with audience during the intermission then the next part will focus on his life in the Canadian mountains.

Kenneth Bell, aged 88, passed peacefully to his heavenly home surrounded by family on May 6, 2016.

Ken is survived by his wife Agnes; children Warren, Judy Rushfeldt (Brian), Sharon Paterson (Jamey), Ken Jr; his five granddaughters Kristin Pue (Jason), Sharilyn Johnston, Karalee Fielding (Ben), Becky Blott (Jory), Abby Paterson; and five great grandchildren: Landon and Liam Pue, Harper and Leopold Fielding, and Haelyn Blott; and brother Harvey and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his youngest daughter Dianne and brother Gordon.

Ken was born in Calgary, Alberta on March 18, 1928. He spent over forty years in Radium Hot Springs raising his family and operating several businesses focusing on tourism, primarily Canadian Souvenir Sales and the Golden Eagle Trading Post. Ken was a well respected businessman and entrepreneur, and actively involved in the community. He was a founding director/shareholder of The Springs Golf Course in Radium and the Panorama Ski Resort. As well, he ran a tour boat on the Columbia River and a restaurant at the Radium Hot Springs Aquacourt.

Ken was actively involved with the local Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce. In 2008 Ken and Agnes moved to Calgary to be closer to family. He will be deeply missed by his wife Agnes of 64 years and family.

Buying Binoculars 101

By Brian Fenerty Pioneer Columnist Recently, a record 800 people went to an astronomy event in the big city east of us, put on by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada.

Calgary also has one of the three largest telescopes in Canada. And the society’s Calgary Centre has been around for more than 50 years with experts at many levels.

Though much smaller, and rather more casual, our valley has one big advantage — a lot less light pollution!

Calgary has been retrofitting many streetlights to shaded “full cutoff” fixtures — meaning less dollars spent skyward and drivers see less glare. However, the city is so big it still has a light-dome over it at night that one may see from the highway lookout east of Olive Lake in Kootenay National Park. We, too, have light going upward, from old in-youreye streetlights and sometimes neighbours’ outside lights accidentally left on all night. But our skies are still nicely dark. As spring progresses, Vega, then Cygnus the Swan, rise over the Rockies and, with them, the sweep of the easily detectable Milky Way. Mars too.

How to look at all this? For some months, the informal Invermere Under the Stars group has planned to have telescopes and binoculars as an evening’s topic, but unavoidable delays do happen. So until then, here’s a quick start for anyone contemplating getting equipment for looking at Cygnus, the Milky Way, Jupiter gradually exiting to the West, Mars and other spring goodies.

An easy starting point? Binoculars. Even advanced observers carry them. Have some? If not, seek large apertures (wide front lenses) to pull in

faint light from nebulae, etc. Get binos that attach to a tripod, to eliminate fatigue from an evening of enticing exploration with adequately large (heavy) binos. Tell the store you are trying them out to see if they show stars sharp at night (some models are good in the day, but blur stars outward from the centre) plus check if they have a wide field of view (many otherwise-good ones have narrow views, making getting lost hopping around stars too easy).

As important as equipment is, each clear (or semi-clear) evening, also just use your eyes to find a familiar star or charted constellation or two. If you later advance to, say, computerized go-to telescopes, from this gradual habit, you will automatically know where things really are.

Have a pair of binoculars at hand?

Look for Jupiter’s biggest moons repositioning hour to hour. (Explorer David Thompson used the moons’ timing in calculating his accurate maps!) Scan stars in the Big Dipper overhead for a double star — then try just by eye.

Search for a two-colour pair of stars in Cygnus. Scan the late-rising Milky Way and imagine exploring with Galileo showing you a vast river of numerous stars previously unknown. Recall, too, that Galileo didn’t have lightdomes to contend with (just people who demanded Earth was the centre of everything).

Upcoming, we will look at not just his then-remarkable yet really-limited telescope. We’ll also look into modern telescopes — to go along with your binoculars.

Petting the catfish!

By Pastor David Morton St. Peter’s Lutheran Mission of Invermere “Don’t hold your breath,” is the first rule in scuba diving. In excitement, or crisis, you can literally forget to breathe.

Holding your breath at depth can be harmful, even deadly. Without being properly exhaled, nitrogen gas, which is dense, collects as microbubbles, usually in our joints. These bubbles expand as you ascend, causing a painful condition called “the bends,” which can lead to disability or death. In light of such dangers, scuba training provides instruction on how to stay safe, keep calm and actually enjoy being underwater.

During classes, we learned what to do if our air regulator came out of our mouth while at depth. A scary thought indeed! At 100 feet down, by the remains of a shipwreck, our instructor showed us how diving can be fun, even in a dangerous situation, by trusting our training. First, upon removing our regulator, we had to immediately begin humming — to prevent us holding

our breath. Next, holding the regulator over a hole in the shipwreck, we would press the regulator’s air release. This sent air down into the hole where the catfish lived. Curious, they poked their heads up. Still humming, we could pet the catfish — then, surprised, they would dart back down, and we put our regulator back in our mouths, taking a breath and repeating the whole process. Petting the fish made us smile, kept us calm, and we no longer felt panicked. Shortly, we felt at ease with our situation and had fun with the catfish, which seemed to enjoy it too.

Sometimes God moves us out our comfort zone and presents us with an opportunity to share His Gospel or a glimpse of His glory. However, we often panic, and we never get to experience the fullness of what He has planned. But God tells us in His Word, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6 When led out of our comfort zone, it may take a while for us to adjust to that new situation. Don’t despair if it doesn’t all work out right away — give it time, and try it again. Petting the catfish while humming underwater may sound crazy, but it was the best way to learn how to stay calm in a dangerous situation at 100 feet in an extreme environment. Let God show you where the catfish are in your deep trials and tribulations or times of mission, and it may lead you to calmly grasp God’s presence and intention in that situation.

Acceptable paints only, please For another year, Invermere Fire and Rescue is collecting paint donations at the fire hall that they are able to ship out to be later recycled for use.

The problem is that people are dropping off a lot more than the accepted products the fire department is able to handle. This includes items such as motor oil and anti-freeze along with industrial and craft paints. Outside of the fire hall, where donations are accepted, there is a sign telling those dropping items off what can and cannot be accepted.

The fire hall is located at 626 4th Street in Invermere.

The original intention of the paint drop-off was to collect paint that was going to be thrown away at the landfill and recycle it. However, with people dropping off the wrong items, it’s costing the fire department more money to dispose of the items, Fire Chief Roger Ekman said.

“We think we’re doing something good for the community, but it gets to the point of trying to figure out how we’re going to handle all this stuff,” Mr. Ekman said.

They will continue with their paint drop-off program, but ask people to read the signs before dropping off their old paint products.

What is the dividend gross up?

Investors with dividend-paying securities such as common and preferred shares in non-registered investment accounts may notice that their T5 slip lists several different dollar amounts pertaining to their earned dividends.

In particular, investors sometimes wonder why the taxable amount of their dividends is higher than the actual amount of dividends earned. Why are dividends taxed this way, and how are investors affected from a taxation standpoint?

Why are dividends grossed-up?

Dividends are paid out of a company’s after-tax profits. The purpose of grossing-up the dividend is to approximate how much pre-tax profit the company would have had to earn in order to pay that dividend.

In Canada, the gross-up amount is 38 per cent.

To accomplish this in a fair way, investors’ T5 slips will see three amounts relating to the dividends they received during the calendar year: the actual amount of the eligible dividends; the taxable amount of the dividends; and the federal dividend tax credit (often abbreviated as DTC), currently 15.02 per cent, which is charged on the taxable, grossed-up dividend amount.

The gross-up and tax credit system is rooted in tax integration, which states that a person should pay about the same amount of tax whether money is earned

from a company directly, such as a salary, or indirectly, as in the case of dividends.

Though not perfect, the end result to a taxpayer after applying the gross-up and DTC is about the same as if the money had been earned in the form of a salary.

Further, as the combined DTC in B.C. is 25.02 per cent, those with a marginal tax rate of 25.02 per cent pay no tax on their dividends, and those with a lower marginal tax rate will earn a tax credit which can be applied against other taxes owing!

How it works For example, consider that an investor received a total of $100 in eligible Canadian dividends during the 2015 tax year. On his or her T5 slip, they will notice three dollar amounts: the actual amount of the eligible dividends, which is $100; the taxable amount of the dividends, which is $138; and the federal DTC of $20.73.

Paying tax on $138 when a person only earned $100 seems unfair, but that’s where the dividend tax credit comes in. The DTC prevents double-taxation and lowers the amount of tax one has to pay on dividends. In addition to the 15.02 per cent provided by the federal government, British Columbia has a provincial DTC of 10 per cent, for a combined credit of 25.02 per cent.

Consider the investor in the above example had a marginal tax rate of 30 per cent. The $138 grossed-up dividend would create tax of $41.40, which would be reduced by their DTC of $34.53. The effective tax rate on the $100 dividend is $6.87, or 6.87 per cent.

Potential issues The dividend gross-up can create difficulties when calculating a person’s eligibility for certain income-tested benefits such as Old Age Security (OAS) or the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS). This is because one’s net income before adjustments, Line 234 on one’s tax return, is used to determine how much OAS or GIS one should receive, possibly resulting in an increased OAS claw-back for those with incomes above $73,756 for 2016, and a lower GIS benefit across all income levels.

Those who notice their income-tested benefits being reduced due to a dividend gross-up should discuss their concerns with their financial advisor. He or she will be able to explain the benefits of continuing to own dividend-paying securities or recommend other investments, if necessary.

Though not without their idiosyncrasies, dividends are the most favorably taxed form of investment returns in the Canadian tax system, as well as an important source of portfolio growth and income for people of all stages of life.
