On Saturday, April 22nd around noon, a truck ended up going through one of the display windows and the wall on the north side of AG Valley Foods in Invermere. After the fracas had subsided, half the truck was inside the store.

“We haven’t confirmed, but we believe that the driver hit the gas pedal instead of the brake. She was pulling in slowly to park (on the north side of the store) and, from what we can see in the security footage, it seems she mistook the gas for the brake, panicked a bit when she accelerated, and then really just hit the throttle (still thinking it to be the brake),” said store manager Greg Lapointe, who was celebrating his 10th anniversary of working at the store that day. “She hit a fairly large wooden beam and stopped. Thankfully nobody was injured.”

Creston contractor to build new multi-use centre

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff Invermere council has chosen a company to build the planned new multi-use centre.

At a special council meeting on Friday, April 22nd, council members voted to award the contract for the work to Creston-based T.A. Rendek and Associates Ltd. for $7.45 million.

“This has been a really long process,” said Invermere mayor Gerry Taft, pointing out that the site of the centre (the old David Thompson Secondary School location) was purchased 22 years ago and discussion on building a new community centre of some sort has been ongoing ever since.

“It’s really exciting to have the design done, the money borrowed and to be about to start construction,” said Mr. Taft. “This facility is going to be a game changer. It will be a hub and will remind people that it’s not all doom and gloom

in the valley or in downtown Invermere, and that when this valley comes together there is quite a lot we can achieve.”

The district had received six bids for the work, all of which came in higher than expected (ranging in price from $8.2 million to $10.35 million) and so district staff undertook negotiations with lowest bidder T.A. Rendek to see if the cost could be further lowered by swapping out some building materials and leaving out some aspects of the planned centre (aside from the core building) or pushing them back to a later date.

“To be clear, some difficult decisions had to be made in order to see the project move forward,” Invermere chief administrative officer Chris Prosser told council. Additional aspects of the project still left in the $7.45 million price include abatement and demolition of the old bus garage on the site. Aspects left out, reduced or deferred include all soft landscaping around the centre (including the outdoor amphitheatre); asphalt parking and access (which

will be deferred and incorporated in the 4th Street water project set for 2017); the retractable main room partition; lighting grid components; retractable seating; kitchen equipment; the library fit out (including a planned sliding door entrance); and all theatre components and lighting (including sound equipment, lights and lighting controls, audio visual equipment, stage equipment and curtains). In addition, the planned outdoor hard surface areas will be decreased in size from 6,500 square feet (600 square metres) to 3,000 square feet (275 square metres) and concrete will be used for these surfaces instead of paving stones.

Mr. Prosser added all these aspects left out of the initial construction can be added later, as more funding becomes available. Mr. Taft commented that perhaps in some ways the decrease in outdoor hard surface areas could be seen in a positive light, since it now allows for a mix of hard surfaces and grass.

Information on Mecoprop spraying in Radium clarified

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff The son and spokesperson of a herbicide contractor based in Wilmer is responding to a story in last week’s Pioneer about the use of Mecoprop around a Radium Hot Springs condominium, clarifying some of the information brought forward by the couple quoted in the story.

The herbicide contractor Wayne Frater is currently away in Montreal for several weeks and unable to speak to The Pioneer, but his son Everett told The Pioneer that while he understands the concern of Radium residents William Nolin and Susan Oddy, some of their points may have been inaccurate, and that use of Mecoprop is strictly regulated in B.C. As part of those regulations Wayne had to acquire a B.C. Pesticide Use Licence, Everett said.

“He (Wayne) had to go away and do the course, and be approved. He had to know his stuff and what it was capable of doing. In this day and age, they are very strict,” said Everett, adding that, despite the posters around the Riverstone Villas condominiums

saying Mecoprop is a pesticide, it is in fact a herbicide, used for dandelions and weeds.

According to Everett, the risk of Mecoprop to humans and animals may have been overstated by Mr. Nolin and Ms. Oddy.

“We’re given a list of approved herbicides that we use around pets and people and that’s what we adhere to, and this (Mecoprop) is one of them,” said Everett. “They do say keep pets off the grass if it appears wet. There’s probably about 20 signs around the entire perimeter and people are notified for the next however many hours to stay off the grass. It’s not like a plantation where they’re doing this every other day. The size of this property and the amount he puts down is so small — it’s not really that serious.”

Everett said that although it may appear that Wayne has a large tank on his back while spraying, the amount of Mecoprop actually in that tank is quite small — essentially just a small bottle’s worth diluted in water, spread over a property the size of the Invermere Community Centre.

In addition, Everett said Mr. Nolin’s comments that the herbicide would spread around the whole block are not accurate.

Columbia Valley RCMP responded to approximately 40 calls for service over the past week. Here are a few of the more interesting ones…

• On Monday, April 18th a 41-year-old local woman attended the Columbia Valley RCMP detachment with a male friend to report that on Saturday, April 16th while camping with another 43-year-old female friend, she was assaulted with a shovel. The complainant stated that the other female had been angry and intoxicated throughout the night and at approximately 11 p.m., a verbal fight escalated into physical with a shoving match between the two women. The complainant advised that the two exchanged a couple pushes and then the other woman grabbed a nearby shovel. She then antagonized the complainant to fight her while holding the shovel.

When the complainant took a step towards the other female, she jabbed the squared shovel into the complainant’s face, injuring her. The male friend broke up the fight and managed to get the shovel away from the other female.

The male and complainant vacated the camping area and attended the Invermere and District Hospital. The complainant received medical attention there. Statements and photographs were obtained from the complainant and her male friend, both stating the other woman was the instigator and purposely and willfully assaulted the complainant with the shovel. Columbia Valley RCMP located the other woman and arrested her for assault with a weapon. She was released on documents requiring her to attend court and to have no contact with the complainant.

• On Tuesday, April 19th, a 66-year-old Nelson woman phoned the Columbia Valley RCMP to report that she was just approached by a male who wanted her to go for a ride with him and have some fun. The woman felt that the male was very creepy and made her feel uncomfortable. The male left in an older blue car with unknown plates. The woman was not wearing her glasses and could not give a description of the male other than he was Caucasian and possibly had a beard. Police spoke with the woman who was

no longer afraid and just wanted to let police know. Officers made patrols in the area, but were unable to locate anything matching the vehicle description.

• On Friday, April 22nd at 2 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP received a report from a female employee of a banking institution located on Main Street in Radium Hot Springs that an irate customer had been in the bank the day prior and had to be asked to leave. Although no actual threats were made by the customer, the employee wished to document the incident with the police. Police received the report and spoke with the employee, who advised that the customer had come into the bank upset as she had some issues with the bank’s procedures. The employee went on to say that when the customer discovered what had happened with her account, she started yelling and screaming while inside the bank and had to be asked to leave. Although the customer did not make any actual threats against any of the bank’s staff, she told the employee that she would be seeing her again about the situation. As a result of the interaction, the customer’s account was closed out and she was advised of this. Police advised the employee to call again if they had any further issues with the customer and recommended that they consider banning her from the bank if she was no longer welcome.

• On Saturday, April 23rd at 7:09 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP received dispatch of a mischief that occurred in the 300 block of 4th Avenue in Invermere. The complainant reported that someone had broken a bunch of eggs inside the cab of his logging truck. He advised that there was no damage however it had made the truck smell.

He advised that he suspected someone in the neighbourhood as they have had issues in the past. He did not have any evidence to support this theory, but advised that this person drove by him and was laughing at him as he was cleaning up the eggs. The complainant also advised that this same person had stolen some firewood from him over the winter, which was reported to police at the time. The complainant was advised to contact police if there were any further issues and was provided with a police file number. Investigation is ongoing.

CP grants Lower Canyon access

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff Canadian Pacific Railway and rafting companies using the Kicking Horse River near Golden have agreed to a temporary solution, allowing the rafters access to an iconic stretch of whitewater just before the summer season begins.

For decades, rafting companies running the Kicking Horse River had accessed the river’s famed Lower Canyon by simply walking across the Canadian Pacific tracks to the put-in — a practice the rail company indicated in March would no longer be allowed.

That resulted in a hue and cry from the rafting companies on river, the business community in Golden, the rafting and paddling community throughout the Kootenay region, and various municipal, regional, provincial and federal politicians. As reported in The Pioneer (April 15th), the fallout from the move extended here to the Columbia Valley, since one of the affected rafting companies — Kootenay River Runners — is based in Radium Hot Springs, and an Invermere-based standup paddleboard and kayak company, Adventure Paddle School, had been looking at the Lower Canyon as a potential site for creekboating courses.

The outcry seems to have had an effect. Canadian Pacific Railway called a meeting with the Kicking Horse River Outfitters Association (the umbrella group for the rafting companies) last week on Friday, April 22nd, saying the rafters will be able to get in the Lower Canyon this summer.

“It’s great, it’s awesome,” said Kootenay River Run. . . ‘Information’ from page 3 “He’s (Wayne) spraying it close to the ground and applying it to the weeds, it’s not up in the air,” said Everett. “As soon as it dries onto the plants, it’s pretty much done. You have to keep rainwater and irrigation water off when you spray it. It doesn’t work if it gets wet. You have to have a timeframe where it dries onto the plants, and then it’s fine.”

Everett also pointed out that Wayne was spraying on a calm day, adding “you’re not allowed to spray if it’s windy.”

In the initial story Mr. Nolin suggested there are natural alternatives to Mecoprop, but according to Everett, “there are some alternatives, but they’re not

The exact details of how river access will work under the temporary solution have not yet been finalized.

“We know they (the rafters) will be able to cross the tracks and that there will be added safety measures, we just don’t know what the fine details of those measures are yet,” Tourism Golden communication co-ordinator Andy Brown told The Pioneer.

“Basically, they (Canadian Pacific Railway) told us we’ll be able to raft the Lower Canyon starting for the May long weekend, and said, ‘let us go back to our office and come up with something (on the details of the safety measures)’,” said Golden-based Glacier Raft Company owner Ryan Johanessen. “It’s something short-term while we figure out something permanent, but we are all pretty happy. We had planned a massive rally (for the weekend) and that’s now turned into a celebration.”

“We are pleased that, starting this May long weekend, we will have rafters floating through the heart of our community, the Kicking Horse River, following a thrilling ride through this incredible stretch of whitewater, and that we are now looking toward a long-term solution to address the access to the Lower Canyon for river users,” said Golden mayor Ron Oszust in a press release. “We all agree at the heart of all of this is safety.

It looks beautiful, it looks good,” said Everett, adding that there are many other instances of industrial or commercial herbicide and pesticide use in the valley happening on a much larger scale than Wayne’s spraying.

“I would think that those issues where’s there thousands of litres (of herbicide) getting sprayed, would be more of a concern than this,” said Everett. “If this (herbicide) is a major concern for these two people, then there’s other issues that are far more drastic.”

Wayne, through his company Frater Enterprises, typically sprays three or four condominium complexes a year, as well as a few private residences.

True transparency

It was the First Nations Financial Transparency Act that ushered in a new era for the Shuswap Indian band.

Legally required to declare their finances by the Act, many of Canada’s First Nations publicized their books in 2014. The local Shuswap Indian Band was one of them, revealing that then-chief Paul Sam was paying himself an annual salary exceeding that of a Canadian prime minister while many of his band members were struggling with poverty, dilapidated housing and lack of running water. By the time the band’s October 2014 election rolled around, the Shuswap community was galvanized to remove Mr. Sam after 35 years in power and replace him with now-chief Barb Cote. Just as the Transparency Act put the Shuswap Band in the national limelight, so did the band’s swift decision to replace their leader.

This past week, when Chief Cote spoke at the Celebrity Luncheon fundraiser for the Windermere Valley Youth Centre Society that drew an almost sold out crowd to Copper Point Resort, her presentation, as it was said by a visiting member of the Shuswap Tribal Council, brought transparency to a entirely new level.

Without one iota of politicking, Chief Cote spoke with great candour about her life and its many challenges, among them: family alcoholism, poverty, abuse and the stigma of being an “Indian” growing up. Focusing not on her achievements and accolades, she instead talked openly about her weakest moments and overcoming them, with a humbleness that moved every person in the room, at times even inspiring a few tears.

The other star of the afternoon was Shuswap education co-ordinator Debra Fisher, who, prior to retiring from the Rocky Mountain School District, worked alongside Chief Cote as an Aboriginal Support Worker.

Ms. Fisher delivered a fascinating and insightful introduction, in which she shared memories dating as far back as when she and Chief Cote shared a crib as infants.

All in all, everyone in the room was reminded it’s life’s hardships that shape us into the people we are; it’s our weakest moments that offer us the opportunities to grow strong — if we take them; and that complete transparency, even in politics, is a powerful tool.

Slow Food Summit is just the start Dear Editor: From April 5th to 10th, Invermere and the Columbia Valley welcomed over 70 delegates from across Canada, the USA and Italy for the Slow Food Canada National Summit. Delegates included chefs, restauranteurs, farmers, fishers, culinary activists, Indigenous food activists, academics, food historians, food-writers, food photographers and bloggers, food and school garden educators and food policy makers.

Judging from the strong engagement of both locals and delegates in panel discussions and presentations, the enthusiasm on the farm and greenhouse tours, the appreciation of our delicious food and wine, the daily shopping expeditions, debates over a

good meal or drink at one of our local restaurants, the sincerity in peoples’ sharing of stories and friendship, and even the late-night dance parties at the disco, the National Summit was an enormous success. Add to that the support of our local producers, non-profits, business-owners, governmental leaders, restaurants, chefs, community members and a huge team of volunteers and we can say, with great confidence, that the Columbia Valley has left a lasting impression on our delegates.

We repeatedly heard the place we call home described as one of unrivalled beauty, with stunning family farms and ranches, kind and friendly people, delicious food prepared by talented chefs, and fine cuisine.

Tourist trap tell-all Editor’s note: The Pioneer normally restricts Letters to the Editor to 400 words, but we’ve made an exception for this insightful submission from New Zealand.

Dear Editor: We’re New Zealanders. We’re trying to get from Banff to Cranbrook to take the fabulous flights out of the mountains at Canadian Rockies International Airport back to Vancouver. Our arrival in Banff will be by rail on the Rocky Mountaineer, but for the past four months, we have been baulking at taking the standardized channel of the express bus to Calgary for the flight back to Vancouver. Travel agents haven’t provided the independent or farsighted advice that we require. We’ve had to explore the alternatives ourselves. A chance search on Google for “airfields in the Rockies” threw up Canadian Rockies International Airport at Cranbrook.

No travel agent had ever mentioned it.

Why would we want to be bused BanffCalgary when Cranbrook is such a great alternative? A mountain flight, before you hit the clouds, is exciting. But flying Cranbrook-Vancouver is wiped out as an alternative route for us by the absence of road transport services to get to Cranbrook from Banff. It is sobering to read that until October 2015, Greyhound had a service running all the way from Banff to Cranbrook, but abandoned it due to low community patronage. Now, as tourists discovering this fabulous route through the mountains, it’s too late.

There are no viable alternatives. The only bus Banff-Cranbrook starts at midnight and takes 12 hours on Greyhound as it is routed through Golden, a five-hour wait, then a transfer to Sun City coaches to Cranbrook and the additional cost of a taxi to the airport. No car hire company will give us a one-way drop-off Banff to Cranbrook citing “no vehicles available”.

A taxi company has an online quote of $499 CDN Banff to Cranbrook. I put an inquiry out on www.tripadvisor.com for transport advice and even ventured to suggest we need an “Uber” service, which is a fancy name for hitching a lift from

Banff to Cranbrook.

What is changing in the rail tourism market? Did Greyhound act too soon?

Did they ever try and develop a commercial road-rail-flight relationship with the Rockies B.C. tourism sector? Is it time to restart the Banff-Cranbrook service?

Here in New Zealand, our inquiries in 2015 about the Rocky Mountaineer were at a time when there was zero marketing. Then with the dawn of the new year, 2016, the New Zealand and Australian tourism markets were blitzed with advertising about the Rocky Mountaineer on TV and in national newspapers and travel shows. As a family, we were slow to complete our rail bookings. During our delay, we’ve seen car rentals Banff-Calgary and flights Calgary-Vancouver hammered with bookings. It’s big business. The Australasian market will have responded.

They may be the type of clients who are more adventurous and wanting exciting alternatives to the current road/flight packages for the masses.

In my view, Greyhound and Canadian Rockies International Airport should be joining forces to get a deal brokered with the Rocky Mountaineer. They should aim to supply at least one road service each way every day to tie in with flights for Air Canada and Pacific Coastal Cranbrook-Vancouver. There must be a demand. As a family we want it. The Rocky Mountaineer is a summer service and developing and marketing a road link Banff-Cranbrook could help boost summer occupancy in Cranbrook, airline seat occupancy Cranbrook-Vancouver, and reinstate a bus service useful to tourists and the community.

As a footnote, there were three replies to my www.tripadviser.com message on the travel forum. I appreciated that respondents gave their time to reply, but all had a slightly disparaging tone about Cranbrook, small planes or small airfields. The British Columbia tourism sector needs to be out there pushing the vision of Cranbrook in the mountains being a cool place to fly to.

More balance please Dear Editor: Your article on page three of the April 22 Pioneer about pesticide use has prompted me, after 65 years on earth, to write my first “letter to the editor”.

Your reporter quite clearly documented the concerns of the Radium couple, but absolutely failed to present the other side of the story. Did he try to interview Mr. Frater? Did he look up mecoprop for himself and try to learn anything about it before submitting his piece? There are any number of sources about the pesticide from Agriculture Canada to Google to Wikipedia. The US Environmental Agency says this about mecoprop: The United States Environmental Protection Agency has classified mecoprop as toxicity class III - slightly toxic.

Hardly the deadly agent described in the article. Info on the product clearly indicates how long you should stay off or away from freshly treated areas and believe me, it isn’t two weeks as Mr. Nolan suggests. If ingested, certainly it would be harmful to you, however,

animals walking on it or lying on it are not at risk. The LD 50 oral dose of mecoprop that kills half the test animals is 930-1210 mg/kg body weight. That means caffeine and nicotine, with LD 50 doses of around 225mg/kg body weight, are about four times more toxic than mecoprop.

It seems to be popular these days to report sensationalism rather than facts.

A lot comes from Hollywood and the music industry. Credible sources like Leonardo DiCaprio who knows that Chinook winds are caused by global warming. Or that “twerker extraordinaire” Miley Cyrus who wants to help the B.C. government with wildlife population numbers.

I have no problem listening to other peoples’ point of view on the subject of pesticides, but, from now on, how about a balanced approach to your reporting on this and other controversial subjects.

Against river restriction Dear Editor: In response to “Lakes not included in the regulation” (Letters, April 22nd Pioneer) —yet! Well, it didn’t take long to flush out the queen bee. Mr. Wilkie, this regulation with a penalty of up to $100,000 dollars and/or a year in jail is something you have been personally working towards for a long time and will be a personal milestone, but will it help or hurt the valley?

Sadly, you and your personal lobby group Wildsight have abused your position and influence, telling people that all levels of government are onside.

Nicely manipulated, but your group missed something. What about the people? What do they say? Have you ever stopped to wonder why every time the horsepower restriction gets close, people get very upset and push back so hard?

Do you think people who navigate the river want to ruin the river and wetland?

Quite the opposite, we love and respect the valley. The reason people travel and

live here is because the outdoor natural resources are accessible and beautiful.

People who navigate these waterways are respectfully enjoying and educating their families about this amazing unique ecosystem. The real reason it doesn’t get supported is because it is pointless as it relates to increasing public safety and or decreasing environment pressure on the ecosystem. We have real studies that your group has ignored. There are very few boats because navigating the system takes a very contentious knowledgeable captain. The river channel has natural restrictions. Also, studies indicate that marine activity contributes only one per cent to the environmental pressure on the ecosystem compared to land-based environmental pressures. That’s in places where there are lots of boats.

Yes, Lake Windermere is excluded for now; however, it is a slippery slope.

John Jenkins releases Small Town Revival album

By Breanne Massey Pioneer Staff John Jenkins will be releasing his fourth and latest album in the Upper Columbia Valley this weekend.

The Golden-based entertainer will be performing live at the CD Release Concert at 8 p.m. in Pynelogs Cultural Centre on Saturday, May 7th for a $20 cover fee, which includes a copy of the John Jenkins’ Small Town Revival album as well as a 15 per cent discount off dinner at Safta’s.

“I had done an album a year for three years, then I had a son (who is now three years old) so my focus shifted,” said Mr. Jenkins about honing his craft. “Then, I applied for a grant for this album … to help cover the costs of writing it. We applied for it in June 2015, and we got it and started recording in January 2016.”

The album was recorded at Straw Bale Studios in Golden and it was produced by Jordan Stringer at Cabin Fever Studios, Nanaimo with engineering completed by Bill Noble and Jordan Stringer, which was then mastered

by Jason Whelan from The Sound Solution.

After spending roughly six months writing and rehearsing the music for the Small Town Revival album,

Mr. Jenkins and his crew spent roughly 120 hours recording the finished project, which was funded with grants totalling $11,000 from Columbia Basin Trust, Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance, and The Canadian Society for the Recording Art. In addition to John Jenkins (guitar, vocals, harmonica and drums) and Jackson Baker (bass and vocals), performers on the album include musicians such as Slade Coffman (guitar and vocals), Dave Stonehouse (banjo), Yannick Robataille (piano), Leah May Gardner (violin), Cory Coultis (vocals), and Jordan Stringer (percussion).

“One of the other really cool points about our album is that I’m a guitar teacher in (Invermere) and I included mentoring a student, who was 13 at the time,” said Mr. Jenkins about Slade Coffman, who is now a 14-year-old resident in Field.

“We co-wrote songs and recorded them, and he’s going to be part of the performance as well. We’re also doing a show the night before in Golden, then we’re all coming to Invermere.”

By Sheila Bonny Wings Over the Rockies Festival For naturalists who either cannot tackle outdoor excursions or get time off during the workday, Wings Over the Rockies has scheduled interesting lunchtime and evening events. These feature scientists and specialists in environmentalism, bird life and the natural world.

Luncheon and snack events with scientist presentations run Monday, May 9th through Sunday, May 15th alternating between Fairmont Hot Springs Resort and Copper Point Resort. Dave Quinn is back to share his presentation on “Water Water Everywhere”. On Tuesday, retired meteorologist Bill Thompson explains how migrating birds instinctively take advantage of prevailing weather condition, and on Wednesday keynote speaker Dr. David Schindler discusses “Preventing Algal Blooms”. On Thursday mid-day, water expert and international public policy advisor Bob Sandford argues for reconsideration of the Columbia River Treaty. On Friday, wetlands biologist Dr. Suzanne Bayley describes how beavers modify the effect of climate warming on wetlands. In a Saturday morning snack presentation, David Bird shares his thoughts on how drones can help our bird populations. David also offers an amusing presentation on Sunday about how Birds DO IT! Each evening, Monday to Friday, Pynelogs Cultural

Centre hosts exciting events that celebrate nature. On Monday, in “Come Hell & High Water”, Bob Sandford takes an amusing look at “Scientific Truth & Consequences in Hollywood Disaster Movies”. On Tuesday, professional film maker Pat Morrow shares views from his backyard: “Wetlands, Waterways and Overlooks in the Columbia Valley”. On Wednesday, naturalist Bryan KellyMcArthur introduces native plants of the valley, as seen through a macro lens. Thursday night is a celebration of the mountains with The Wardens, whose careers in the National Parks inspire their songs and stories. After soldout performances last year, the band returns by popular demand and promises all-new content. Friday is a double event — first, in “A Travel Writer with a Birding Habit”, Carol Patterson entertains us with bird stories; then, photographer Jim Lawrence presents a 16-minute celebration of wildlife video called Wild Moments.

The festival’s highlight is Saturday night’s Gala Banquet at Copper Point Resort featuring an address by keynote speaker, Dr. David Schindler. He will discuss an issue crucial to us all: the sustainability of our water resources and the trade-offs between conservation and economics.

The event will also include a live and silent auction, including a trip into the Arctic with Adventure Canada.

Improv show at DTSS

By Breanne Massey Pioneer Staff David Thompson Secondary School (DTSS) theatre students are eager to perform an interactive improvisational theatre show to raise money for eight students to travel to Summerland this May for the Good Will Shakespeare Festival.

The improv performance will feature a mixture of Grade 9, 10, 11 and 12 students starting at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 6th at the DTSS Theatre.

“We have a number of very funny actors who regularly play theatre sports or improv games similar to what you’d see on a show like ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway’ and we decided to show them to the public,” said Shelley Little, DTSS drama teacher, noting there’s a club of theatre students who practice improv informally outside of drama class every Tuesday this semester. “It’s sure to be a very entertaining evening, with lots of interaction with the audience… the club is pretty talented and pretty funny, so I’m hoping to get a lot of people out.”

The Good Will Shakespeare Festival in Summerland creates a unique platform for thespians to participate in three days of drama workshops offered by university students and theatre professionals from across B.C. In addition to the three days of workshops, there will be two days of travelling for the DTSS students.

“It’s a five-day trip for our class, so it’s only the kids who are really interested in attending the festival who are attending because they have to be away from school for three days and go all the way to Summerland,” said Ms. Little, noting the program costs roughly $350 per student. “We’re actually taking the Greyhound all the way from Golden to Summerland.” . . . ‘New’ from page 14 Once the Columbia Valley Arts and Culture Fund reaches several thousand dollars, the Community Foundation’s investment committee will make the call to have the fund invested through the Vancouver Foundation’s Consolidated Trust Fund (CTF), a reliable $985 million investment fund managed by some of Canada’s top advisors.

But the magic number is $10,000 — once the Arts and Culture Fund reaches that plateau, the Community Foundation will begin to grant annually from the return on investment, providing arts funds in perpetuity. The establishment of the endowment

Each participating school will be performing a short program that is Shakespeare-related at the Good Will Shakespeare Festival. Ms. Little’s class has been busily rehearsing a show called “Shakeshpeare Shtew”, which was written by Matty Helmer, a Grade 12 DTSS student, to perform at the festival.

“He wrote a 20-minute piece about characters from Romeo and Juliet, the Merchant of Venice, and Macbeth all meeting,” explained Ms. Little. “It’s pretty funny. We’re performing that one night and we’ll get to see what other students are doing.”

The confidence that some students gain from participating in arts and entertainment workshops can be monumental for personal development and growth, she added.

“Some of these kids are not generally on sports teams or travelling for hockey and other activities, so for some of them, it’s their first time leaving the valley and I didn’t want to make it prohibitively expensive or I would’ve lost some of them,” said Ms. Little.

She added the Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) has raised and donated roughly $50 per student and plans to subsidize roughly $1,000 out of the DTSS drama account. Ms. Little is hoping to raise enough money to salvage some of her department’s expenses as well as to raise money to help students cover the cost of spending money for meals over the five-day long trip.

“If it’s good and popular, I’m going to try to make it a bigger deal next year,” she said, adding this would be her first year attending the festival with students. “A lot of it is based on Shakespeare in costumes, workshopping some of his plays, dance, rap, mime — it’s a variety of things.”

The new fund is also one of the pillars of CV Arts new “6 Ways to Give” campaign, which focuses on supporting the arts through enjoyment (attending events), becoming a member of CV Arts, donating directly, sponsoring arts events, pursuing gifting options, or making a donation to the new fund.

RESP information offered Family Dynamix and Kootenay Savings will be hosting a free Registered Education Saving Plan (RESP) event at the Royal Canadian Legion in Invermere at 5:30 p.m. on May 5th to help families from all walks of life plan to save for their children’s post-secondary education. Dinner and door prizes will be provided by the Credit Union.

“Learn which government incentives you can apply for on behalf of your child, based on your families qualifications,” said Meagan Fazackerley, Columbia Valley Early Years Coalition and Centre co-ordinator at Family Dynamix, noting there’s an opportunity to obtain a $1,200 grant regardless of income for children between the ages of six and nine years old to start. “There are thousands of dollars worth of grants and bonds that do not require yearly contributions. Families who think they cannot afford an RESP will learn about how to access the Canada Learning Bond through RESPs, a grant offered by the federal government to families that receive the National Child Benefit Supplement. Again no yearly contributions required.”

In addition, the British Columbia Teaching Education Savings Grants is available to all families once an RESP is opened, so families can learn the benefits of saving early for their child’s future and how their RESP will grow over time. There are also federal government grants being made available to all families up to a lifetime maximum of $7,200 per child and there are additional provincial grants in British Columbia of $1,200.

The event is open to parents, grandparents, service providers and children. Registration to attend is mandatory and can be booked by calling Family Dynamix to reserve a spot at 250-342-5566.

“The choir will perform a wide range of repertoire, including traditional sacred works and spirituals, madrigals, Canadian folk songs and popular favourites,” said choir conductor Paul Carriere. “The choir has outstanding soloists who will be featured from within those works, and also in special features.

By Steve Hubrecht Mother’s Day Madness Mayhem will be breaking out at the Hoodoo Grill in Fairmont on Mother’s Day, May 8th with the reunion of Missing Peace. The band features guitarists Cory Price and Niels Kunze, Shane Hagan covering lead vocals and guitar, Ian Bornheim on bass and Chris Howse keeping the beat. When contacted for an interview the band declined, citing a “court-ordered silence”, which runs out on May 8th at 6 p.m., imposed shortly after their last Northern Lights Music Festival appearance in 1998.

The pulsing melodies of the band have scientists in agreement that on Mother’s Day the only humans responsible for global warming will be on stage at the Hoodoo Grill. They also agree that, if another reunion show is in the works for the aging band members, they should perform under the name “Missing Teeth”. The band will be performing their most recent single Manscaping, which has been “shaved down” from an seven-minute balled to a 10-second drum solo.

This show will be far more entertaining than a Donald Trump rally. Doncha dare miss it!

24-year tradition comes to an end The Kellogg, Idaho, High School Band paid their final visit to the DTSS Band in Invermere from April 21st to 23rd, closing off 24 years of very successful exchanges between the two groups. Both Rick Dickinson (right), the Kellogg director who grew up in Lewiston, Idaho, and DTSS band director Greg Constable (left) played in the same Creston parade in the early 1970s, but neither knew it at the time as they were in different high school bands. Greg next established contact with Rick in 1992 to set up the DTSS Band’s first visit to Kellogg and since then each band has visited the other town six times for concerts, tours, cross-cultural activities, and home stays with local residents.

Over the years, many students from both bands have established friendships with their visitors, and some 1992 students who are currently in their early 40s are still in touch!

Rick will be retiring at the end of this school year, and this was a fine ending to a long-standing tradition.

The inns and outs of share buybacks Companies can use many different strategies to create value for their shareholders, including dividends, stock price appreciation and share repurchases, or buybacks.

There are many reasons why a company might choose to repurchase shares, all of which help the company, but do buybacks help investors? Why do companies buy back shares, and what are the short and longterm implications?

What is a buyback?

A share repurchase, or buyback, is achieved when a company buys back its own shares from the marketplace, either through the open market or a tender offer.

Because a company can’t act as its own shareholder, repurchased shares are absorbed by the company, thus reducing the number of outstanding shares in the market.

When a company’s number of shares is reduced, the earnings per share increases. This has the effect of lowering the price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of a stock, making it appear less expensive, even if there has been no change in earnings.

This is one reason why shareholders and markets in general view share buybacks positively.

Why do companies buy back shares?

A company issuing a buyback might want to prop up their share price if they feel the market has discount-

ed their share price too much. This sends the message that management believes in their company and usually reflects positively on the company.

Companies with employee stock option programs might want to combat the effects of dilution, in which case a buyback is likely good for shareholders.

Large, mature companies sometimes find themselves with a lot of cash and few investment options that suit their needs. This might cause management to feel that investing in their own company is the best way to make use of cash at that particular time.

For example, technology giant Apple has hundreds of billions of dollars in cash reserves, despite massive ongoing investments in research and development. Apple decided their best option was to give some of the money back to shareholders by performing $56 billion in share buybacks in 2014.

Sometimes, companies use a share repurchase solely as a means to improve its financial ratios. As discussed above, improved ratios are a natural by-product of share buybacks, and are not problematic on their own. Potential problems arise when a company is using a buyback as a means to artificially prop up its stock price, rather than trying to create more value for shareholders.

What should investors consider first?

When investors receive a tender offer, or hear that

a company whose stock they own is planning a share buyback, some homework is necessary to determine if the event is beneficial to shareholders.

Primarily, knowing that buybacks result in improved financial ratios, it’s important to review the company’s financial statements to determine if its cash flow and revenue are growing independently of the repurchase. If so, the company may truly be undervalued and, presumably, has the potential to yield good results going forward.

Music educator teaches without instruments

By Breanne Massey Pioneer Staff A 61-year-old Invermere woman is encouraging tots and toddlers to learn about music literacy without instruments.

Loreen Jacobs, a former Calgary-based teacher who now lives in Invermere, will be using the Kodaly method, which was developed by Hungarian composer Zolton Kodaly, to educate children between the ages of two and seven years old about music.

“I have a Bachelor of Education, taught in Calgary and I took a one-year practicum from Lois Choksy,” said Ms. Jacobs, while explaining that Ms. Choksy helped develop and refine the Kodaly method. “The Kodaly method is musical education for young children aimed at music literacy so that people can teach music in an elementary school without a budget for instruments.”

The Kodaly method, she added, is a program that has been structured around childhood development.

It combines the use of the pentatonic scale, movement and teaches musical concepts through action instead of rhythm, while remaining an affordable option for families from all walks of life.

“There’s lots of movement because young children need to move to music in order to sense the rhythm and

Photo submitted feel the intonation,” said Ms. Jacobs. “It uses the pentatonic scale because it’s much easier for children to sing, which helps them (understand) the intonation… we teach concepts through action. We don’t label them by saying we’re going to talk about rhythm or intonation or dynamics. We do it.”

Ms. Jacobs explained there are a series of activities including props, such as drum sticks, which are used to teach the dynamics of music without stressing the technical labels in their education.

“I have seen this system work,” she said. “I have seen

young children who have never had the opportunity to take a music lesson with an instrument learn to be completely musically literate, which means you can hand them some music and they figure out the key signatures, the time — everything. They know how to find A, which is the North American pitch standard, which is one of the things I teach them through a tuning fork and, by the time kids are in Grade 2, they can pick A out of the air to figure out the starting note of the piece and they simply start to sing it. It’s wonderful.”

She is offering seven classes to six tots between the ages five to seven years old every Sunday, starting on May 8th as well as 10 classes for toddlers between the ages of two and four years old every Monday and Thursday starting on May 16th. However, parents are required to attend the $80 program with their children at Ms. Jacobs’ home, which is located at 1755 Fort Point Close in Invermere.

“It’s the first time that I’m (offering this program) in Invermere,” she concluded. “But I did this with my classes when I taught in Calgary so I know that it’s fun and it works with kids. I also volunteered at Little Badgers in the fall (to teach the program) and it was quite popular.”

Popular Greek restaurant in Fairmont opens for season

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff Tony’s Greek Grill is up and running again for another season. The popular Fairmont Hot Springs restaurant has been in business since 2003 and shows no signs of slowing down.

“We opened early this year, on Friday, April 15th.

It was just so nice; it was like it was already summer, so we opened,” said co-owner Vivian Stergiou, adding that the key to the restaurant’s success is her husband Tony’s secret recipes.

“We try to have everything fresh and we use all the traditional recipes,” said Vivian, adding Tony does

the meat cutting, the prep, the hummus and tzatziki, while she does the baklava and spanakopita.

“I think people really appreciate the hard work that goes into that (the traditional Greek approach),” she added.

Vivian said it’s hard to say which menu item is the top seller, since pretty much everything is popular and sells well, but did concede that the traditional gyros and other meat skewers (such as chicken and lamb), the donairs, souvlaki and falafel wraps are likely the most frequently requested dishes.

And typically we know what really happened. If you are honest about things, we are dealing with only the problem. If you lie about it, we are suddenly dealing with two.

Teens who are working are investing in their future

By Susan Clovechok, Executive Director Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce Holding down a job is an important stepping stone to adulthood. With a job, teens are able to better practice independence and self-reliance. Although it’s true that holding down a job can interfere with school work, this strain is also an important lesson. Teens who work while still maintaining school learn about the struggles of an adult life full of responsibilities and have an opportunity to explore how they will balance all of their commitments as an adult. Learning this lesson while still under a watchful parental eye offers a great learning opportunity when the stakes are not so high. Another great part of the balancing lesson that comes along with teen work: better grades. Studies have shown that students who work 10 to 15 hours a week during the school year earn higher grades than students who don’t work at all.

A post-secondary education is very important, but it’s even more valuable when paired with a resume full of experience. Students who are able to work during their high school and post-secondary years are able to demonstrate this experience and build valuable entries on their resume. By working part-time, teens can establish contacts with employers who can function as references and give recommendations in the future. These connections may even be able to offer future job opportunities once students are able to work at a higher level.

When teens begin to earn their very own dollars, the real money lesson begins. As they earn money and subsequently spend it, parents have the opportunity to teach their children about responsible money management.

Contributing to car expenses and their post-secondary fund, creating a budget, and learning just how much things like food and gas cost, are important life lessons.

One would hope that a teen’s part-time job as a dishwasher doesn’t turn out to be a career, but working small odd jobs as a teen can prove to be a career booster nonetheless. Teens who work in a restaurant in high school may be inspired to become a chef or start their own restaurant after post-secondary. Others might be turned on to a field they might not have considered before: a summer job at the District of Invermere might

spark an interest in horticulture or engineering; or a job at an art gallery might inspire an interest in arts and culture that had never been explored before.

As teens work a part-time job, they learn just how capable they are, what they are interested in and what they are naturally good at. They build confidence and self-reliance.

The teen years are the transitionary time between childhood and adulthood; teens who work part-time jobs during the school year and summer months are more likely to make successful transitions into adulthood.

Why choose the Turn Copper into Gold golf tournament?

By Susan Clovechok Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce What, another fundraiser you say? Are we getting donation burnout? The Turn Copper into Gold Golf Tournament at Mountainside Golf Course in Fairmont is the Columbia Valley Chamber’s primary fundraiser, but the funds raised don’t go to support a family or children in need or a cause that pulls at your heartstrings.

The funds go towards operating an organization that supports the business community and the economic well-being of the communities that the CVCC serves. So, indirectly, it can be argued that the funds raised do support families and children and all the other important causes to which we donate, because the CVCC supports businesses’ success and when businesses in our communities succeed, they can better support all the other events that are critical to the social fabric of our communities.

In its 14th year, the tournament is the biggest of two fundraisers that the Chamber runs and it generates between $20,000 and $25,000 (net) per year for the Chamber. The

funds enable the Chamber to maintain and operate a professional building at the crossroads near the entrance to Invermere so that all the member fees go into the business of operating a Chamber. Over the past five years, the CVCC has paid off the mortgage, and completed some much-needed renovations, but, more importantly, we’ve been able to focus on programs and initiatives that support the business community and therefore our local economy.

The tournament is more than just about raising money. It is a fun, affordable afternoon on the golf course, networking with other local business owners and leaders, and, in many cases, doing business. With the move to a spring event, it is the kick-off event for the busy season and, for some, the first and possibly the only round of golf they’ll get until the fall.

Celebrity Luncheon fundraiser The Windermere Valley Youth Centre Society (WVYCS) held a Celebrity Luncheon for Shuswap Indian Band chief Barb Cote at Copper Point Resort on Sunday, April 24th as a fundraiser for the Summit Youth Centre. The large turnout spoke to the Columbia Valley community’s widespread support of Chief Cote, who was born and raised in the valley and is the great-granddaughter to the last hereditary chief of the Akisqnuk First Nation (Chief Cote is of both Shuswap and Aksiqnuk decent). S OBITUARY S Nona Coy November 10th, 1922 April 21st, 2016 Nona (Quane), born in Regina, Saskatchewan, November 10th, 1922, passed away peacefully in Invermere on Thursday, April 21st, 2016.

Nona will be lovingly remembered by her devoted husband of 70 years, Fil Coy, and her four sons Jack (Darlene), Jim, Bill (Yvonne) and Bob (Dixie). She will be missed by her eight grandchildren, whom she adored: Beth (Greg), David (Colleen), Nicole, Michael (Catherine), Stacey (Shane), Brad (Devon), Lindsay and Allison (Nathan). Along with her 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, she moved to the Columbia Valley in 1946. Nona loved family first, and all in the community. Nona took great interest and pride in her family always wanting the best for them. Proudly sharing stories with her treasured friends at bridge and ladies golf days. Nona will be missed by many and never forgotten by all.

There will be no memorial service. In lieu of other tributes, gifts to the charity of your choice, in Nona’s memory, are sincerely appreciated.

Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Area F director Wendy Booth, who was in the audience, asked if the planned rooftop patio was still included

in the design, and Mr. Prosser confirmed it is.

“It (the patio) is an expensive space, but it is unique. It’s the only thing like it in the valley,” said Mr. Taft, adding the patio could be rented out for weddings and other large functions, generating income to offset the cost of the centre. Mr. Taft also said he’s happy with the contractor’s projected 52 to 60 week construction timeline, which — if no delays occur — could have the centre ready to be opened in

summer 2017, several months ahead of the targeted fall 2017 opening.

“This is a momentous decision for this council, this town and this valley,” said councillor Greg Anderson, adding that the employment generated by the construction will also be a boon for Invermere. “It’s going to put a lot of people to work at a time when we really need it.”

Council voted unanimously to award the contract to T.A. Rendek.

A slow work in progress

By Pastor Murray Wittke Valley Christian Assembly The Norfolk Pine in our living room stands nine feet nine inches tall. I see it every day and though it never seems to change, what was once a seedling now presses against the ceiling.

Fifteen years of living with this tree has taught me that growth happens slowly… while we’re not paying attention.

It’s been that way in my life. When I was a child, I got the idea that simply being me wasn’t good enough. Deep inside I believed I had to change and become someone else so people would like me. But because my sense of what people would like was constantly changing, I ended up recreating myself many times. Like changing clothes, I tried on and discarded a wide variety of attitudes, ideas,

values, opinions and beliefs. Living as a people pleaser was exhausting.

It took awhile, but I finally let go of thinking I needed to be someone other than who God made me. I heard the good news that you don’t have to change for God to love you. Now I believe He loves me just as I am — a child of God with my own unique personality, dreams, desires and life experience. It’s been a long time coming, but I’m now happy and free to be me!

Have the circumstances of life turned you into someone you never thought you’d be? No matter what others may think or how you see yourself, God sees you as His beloved child. It may seem unbelievable, but as you open your heart to Him, God will move your life in new directions. You can trust the slow work of God. You’ll change, growth will happen, and, slowly, the person you were meant to be will emerge. God does good work!

Looking back over nearly six decades, I can see that I’ve done a lot of growing. While my attention has been elsewhere, God has been quietly at work making me the man He wants me to be. Reaching for the sky, we all remain a slow work in progress, just like my Norfolk Pine.

Check with your local rowing club in Invermere to see if they have youth programs. Before June 10th, the Zone 1 Rowing coaches will be selecting youth born in 2000 or later (ages 14, 15 and 16) for the Zone 1 BC Summer Games rowing crew. The opportunity is open to males and females and the boats being selected are the single and double scull shown in the attached picture.

Do you use the Concept II rowing machine at the gym to train for your sport? If yes, then you already have an idea what is required. You will be training to row a 1500 metre time trial and a 1000 metre heat in the Games regatta.

You will be learning what is necessary to complete the skills test that is a part of the rowing program at the Games.

Learn a new vocabulary along with a new sport.
