After more than 16 years at the helm of the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena, arena manager Phyllis Dubielewicz has retired.

“Phyllis has spent over 25 years dedicated to recreation in the Columbia Valley,” said Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) environmental services manager Kevin Paterson. “She started with the Eddie Mountain Recreation Society as a Secretary in 1990 and has been a driving force ever since.”

Ms. Dubielewicz was office manager for the Society for many years, managed the Lions and Rotary ballparks for nine years, and has been the manager of the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena for the past 16 years.

“Phyllis has been a tremendous leader and we will miss her. We wish her well on her retirement,” added

Mr. Paterson.

At a farewell luncheon on her last day, Mr. Paterson presented Ms. Dubielewicz with an RDEK clock as a token of appreciation for her years of dedicated service.

The arena manager role has been expanded to include additional responsibilities and a new title. Filling the new Columbia Valley recreation services supervisor position is Colin Peet, who has spent the last three years as director of recreation in Watrous, Saskatchewan. Mr. Peet has a bachelor and master of arts in sports management and a diploma in business administration and human resources.

“We are fortunate to have a really strong group of employees at the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena, so the transition to this new position should be seamless,” said Mr. Paterson. “Colin has a passion for recreation and will be a great asset to our team.”

mischief to a vehicle located in the 1300 block of 17th Street in Invermere. The complainant and registered owner reported that the windshield to his black 2013 Chrysler 200 was damaged by a marble that he found on his driveway. Police attended and the complainant reported that the damage would have occurred sometime between last Tuesday and Friday. There were two small chips and one crack from one of the chips.

Photos of the damage were obtained which was approximately $300. The marble, approximately one inch in diameter and clear with orange and green colour inside, was seized. Apparently, the neighbour found one in their driveway as well. No other vehicles in the neighbourhood were reported damaged.

• On Sunday, April 10th, at 3:33 a.m., Columbia Valley RCMP were dispatched to an alarm at JA Laird Elementary School in Invermere. Dispatch reported that the first hit was to classroom 103 and the second hit was to the east exit.

Police attended and saw a male figure running on the school grounds. Police attempted to follow but lost sight. Upon returning to the school, police located a door on the north side of the building ajar. The door was unlocked and did not look damaged. Police cleared the building and, in doing so, noted some posters were ripped off a wall and a screen from a window was bent and found outside. The School District Operations Manager also attended the school and did not find anything else damaged or stolen at this time.

• In the early morning on Monday, April 11th, a local male phoned the RCMP to assist in removing an unwanted guest from his residence located in the 1400 block of 15th Avenue in Invermere. The complainant had a party and was shutting it down, but another male refused to leave. Police attended and found the guest grossly intoxicated, standing on the sidewalk in front of the house.

Police asked the guest where he was three times and got three different answers. He was not making much sense and slurring his words heavily. Police felt that the guest was unable to care for himself and arrested him for being intoxicated in a public place. He was lodged in cells and was released in the morning when sober with a violation ticket for being intoxicated in a public place.

Columbia Valley RCMP responded to approximately 46 calls for service over the past week. Here are a few interesting ones…

• On Tuesday, April 5th, a 30-year-old local golf pro from Fairmont called Columbia Valley RCMP to report his golf clubs and golf bag stolen from his unlocked vehicle that was parked in his driveway overnight (between 7 p.m. and 7:30 a.m.). The vehicle was parked in the front yard of the 5000 block of Fairmont Close in Fairmont Hot Springs. A training aid that he uses with his students was left on the ground by his car. Clubs and bag are worth approximately $3,000 retail. His name is embroidered on his golf bag, which is white, black and red. The brand of bag and clubs is TaylorMade. One of the clubs has a bald eagle head cover and the driver has a bright yellow shaft. One of the pro’s friends also had his vehicle rifled through, and the door to vehicle left open which drained the battery. A neighbour advised that he noticed a suspicious red van, similar to a ‘92 Dodge with dim lights, parked by the pro’s residence at around 2 a.m. the night before. Police continue to investigate and are asking anyone with further information to contact them or Crime Stoppers.

• On Thursday, April 7th at 5:47 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP received dispatch of a two-vehicle collision at 1310 7th Avenue in Invermere. The complainant reported that he had been backing out of a parking spot on 13th Street when he struck a vehicle that had been turning left into an adjacent parking spot. Police attended and spoke with both parties. The complainant was requesting an accident report as he was from out of province. A 1994 GMC truck driven by an 18-year-old male had been turning left into a parking spot when his vehicle made contact with the complainant’s 2013 Ford Flex on the rear passenger side. Both vehicles received minimal damages and were able to be driven away. An accident report was completed and provided to both parties for insurance purposes. Both vehicles were in motion when they made contact.

B.C. fire fines now highest in Canada

By Breanne Massey Pioneer Staff The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations is urging outdoor enthusiasts to make responsible decisions in an effort to prevent wildfires this summer.

On March 10th, the BC Government announced there would be a significant increase to fines for 19 different violations under the Wildfire Act and another seven violations under the Wildfire Regulation.

The push to increase fines pertaining to wildfires pertain to the busy and costly 2015 fire season which saw 283,400 hectares burned and over $278 million spent on wildfire engagements.

“This government has acted on behalf of all British Columbians to crack down on reckless behaviour that could put lives, communities and resources at risk,” said Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations spokesperson Steve Thomson in a recent press release. “We encourage everyone to do the right thing this fire season by learning more about responsible fire use and making sure they follow the rules.”

In fact, the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations reports that, on average, up to 40 per cent of annual provincial wildfires are man-made.

Rivers under siege

There are two mighty rivers in the Columbia Valley — the Columbia River and the Kicking Horse River, which feeds into the Columbia in Golden, flowing from Wapta Lake and receiving the Yoho River upstream from Field.

Right now both are under the scrutiny of the federal government, and both apparently have their respective communities up in arms. Golden’s mayor swears CP Rail is not going to succeed at cutting off public access to the Lower Canyon with a small army of local outdoor outfitters pushing him to return Lower Canyon river access to them.

Meanwhile, here closer to home, public input appears to stretch to both extremes: on the far left, that the proposed 20 horsepower limit in the Columbia Wetlands will lead to a welcome ban on powerboats on Lake Windermere and Columbia Lake; and on the far right, that the permitted speed in the channels bordering protected species’ habitat should be the same as what’s on the wide open waters of the lake with shore side development.

It took years for local elected officials and environmental groups to eventually find a compromise. They hammered it out, eventually deciding by 2008 that a restriction in the wetlands channels was crucial, just as maintaining the option of powerboats on the lake was crucial — a compromise. Some will be upset there are still powerboats on the lakes; some will be upset the wetlands are getting special treatment.

Wetlands are of crucial importance to the world’s entire ecosystem. Human development has encroached on them to the point where there’s not many left — the Columbia Wetlands being one of the longest intact wetlands left in North America. Enforcing responsible powerboating etiquette on the lakes is already a challenge — each summer invites complaints of irresponsible boaters endangering kayakers and paddleboarders.

As the concerted push to increase tourism to the valley continues with visitor numbers noticeably swelling year after year, stepped up measures that protect the wetlands from uninformed boaters is definitely the way to go.

Receptive to new boating restrictions Dear Editor: Congratulations to MP Wayne Stetski, Radium mayor Clara Reinhardt, RDEK director Gerry Wilkie and Invermere mayor Gerry Taft for finally taking this bold step to start reducing power boat usage in the Columbia Valley.

Eventually we will finally get those noisy, dangerous high-power boats off Lake Windermere and Columbia Lake thanks to the Trudeau government’s federal transport regulations.

Their vision of having only canoes, kayaks and small aluminum fishing boats on Lake Windermere, the Columbia River and Columbia Lake is powerful

and having the Trudeau government stepping in to control the valley is exactly what we need.

I can see the new rules, if passed in the next few weeks, only regulate the Columbia River, but as we all know, Lake Windermere is merely a widening of the river. One step at a time!

The new regulations will likely go through shortly because Mr. Trudeau can demonstrate his commitment to the environment. They were very smart to announce the new regulations quickly, ensuring the opponents will have no time to rally and react. Young, good-looking and smart! And a great fine too — $100,000 and or one year in jail for violators.

Potential power outages in Invermere

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff The District of Invermere will be getting new power poles sometime soon.

BC Hydro plans to replace some 300 of the district’s poles at some point this year, many of which have aged to the point that replacement is necessary.

“We regularly inspect poles to determine strength,” BC Hydro spokesperson Mora Scott told The Pioneer, adding that poles can be affected by weathering, insects, wildlife and general aging.

Ms. Scott said the reason for changing out the Invermere poles is “probably a combination of all those factors – they (the poles) are getting on in their lifespan.”

Most power poles last about 40 to 50 years, she added. There are approximately 70,000 wooden poles in

use across the province that have been in service for more than 50 years.

The 300 poles being replaced are “probably just a small fraction” of the total power poles in the Upper Columbia Valley, said Ms. Scott, adding that the Invermere poles are among the 12,000 that BC Hydro will be replacing over the next several months throughout the province.

A BC Hydro press release on the new poles said that residents might experience power outages during the replacement, as the company may need to disconnect power during the work. Crews will notify customers in person, by mail or by phone about these scheduled outages for maintenance.

BC Hydro maintains and operates more than 900,000 wooden poles that hold more than 58,000 kilometres of overhead distribution lines and 278,000 overhead transformers.

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff The Mountain of Hope Society is readying for its 10th annual fundraiser and hoping to raise its profile as an organization that supports those in need who might otherwise not get any help.

The society began a decade ago and has since raised more than $200,000 — $144,000 of which it has spent helping 56 different families in need. “We’re here to assist people in the community who suddenly come into hard times, but don’t necessarily have the resources to raise the money,� said society president Neil Carey. “There are public fundraisers to support well-known valley residents in their time of need, or for those in need who happen to have friends or family who can organize a big fundraising event. These are great events and we greatly encourage them. But our role as a society is to step in and support those who don’t have that voice or don’t have a network of people to help them out or who want to keep their problems out of the public eye — that’s who we help. Sometimes you come across people who are in a situation that is quite sensitive and they don’t want the town to know about what they are going through.�

The society was initially formed by a group of local residents after one of their close friends found themselves in just such a situation and needed help.

This year, the society’s annual fundraiser (the only one the society holds all year) has morphed from a gala into more of an event, according to Mr. Carey. “We’ve always held it during the winter up at Panorama Mountain Resort, but we’ve changed it this year and are doing it in the summer, on Saturday June 4th, and we’re turning it into a celebration as well as a Gala Fundraiser,� he said. “With the large venue this year, indoors and outdoors at Panorama’s Great Hall, we are able to have a larger crowd attend.�

The evening will feature food stations, bar, live music, dancing and the all-important silent and live auctions. “When we first started helping people, we had to scramble to react. Now that we have funds built up, we can respond quite quickly, however we do rely on this fundraiser to keep those funds going,� said Mr. Carey.

. . . ‘Furor’ from page 3 Negotiations on the issue have escalated to include Golden’s mayor, the local regional district rural area director, Tourism Golden, the Golden Chamber of Commerce, Kootenay Columbia MP Wayne Stetski and Columbia River-Revelstoke MLA Norm Macdonald.

The crossing suddenly became an issue after a Transport Canada official doing a routine inspection last summer observed and reported rafters crossing the tracks. Transport Canada told Canadian Pacific safety needed to be tightened up.

Most of the rafting companies have a variety of trip options offering various combinations of the upper, middle and Lower Canyon of the Kicking Horse River, and those who spoke to The Pioneer said losing the Lower Canyon will cut back those options and significantly shorten the trip for tourists who want to do the whole river.

Mr. Scheler said it was hard to quantify the impact that losing the Lower Canyon might have on Kootenay River Runners, but said “it will put a dent in the money coming in. We do have many customers who raft the upper and middle river and then come back to do the Lower Canyon, so it will affect repeat business big time.”

He added that, in a conservative estimate, the move could result in lost revenue of as much as 15 per cent.

Kootenay River Runners also run trips on Toby Creek and the Kootenay River, options not typically offered by the rafting companies based in Golden, so those companies could see greater fallout.

“It’s hard to say; we’ve never experienced something like this, but it (business) could be down by a third. Maybe more. People who want to raft the whole river may not come if they can’t,” said Mr. Johanessen. “A lot of people will specifically ask for the Lower Canyon.”

But the biggest impact would be felt right in Golden. Golden mayor Ron Oszust told The Pioneer that Golden’s chief administrative officer has pegged the spin-off business generated by the 40,000 tourists who come to the Golden area to raft each summer at $3 million to $5.8 million, and that 15,000 of these 40,000 visitors run the Lower Canyon.

“It (the Lower Canyon) is the jewel of whitewater rafting in this province. It is the product, the attractant that everybody wants,” Mr. Oszust told The Pioneer, vowing that some kind of solution would be worked out in time for Golden’s annual mountain festival that’s taking place over the Victoria Day long weekend.

In the meantime, concerned residents have launched a “Save the Lower Canyon” Facebook page and a petition on www.change.org, which, as of press time, had garnered 6,323 signatures.

We are fortunate that Richard Therrien, a Canadian poet who has been published for years in several Canadian periodicals, is coming to Invermere after the book launch of his first full length collection of poems, Sleeping In Tall Grass, published in March 2016 by the University of Alberta Richard Therrien Press with assistance from the Canada Council in their Robert Kroetsch Series.

Sleeping In Tall Grass is a cycle of poems looking at a family enfolded within the body of the Canadian prairie itself. It is writing that has been described by critics as reaching into the “very grain of existence.”

Richard, who has written daily for most of his adult life, has made his amazing variety of life experiences and occupations a vital part of how he expresses himself as a writer.

After his book launch in Edmonton, he is coming to Invermere to visit his long-time friend, singer-songwriter Bruce Childs. CV Arts and the Invermere Public Library are very happy to support an April 23rd reading and book signing by Richard Therrien, starting at 7 p.m. at

This double CD is a retrospective of over 40 years of songwriting by Bruce. The poetic lyrics of his songs reflect relationships, chance encounters, and different physical environments, including rural, semi-rural, urban and natural environments.

Birding abounds at Wings fest

By Sheila Bonny Wings Over the Rockies Festival Although the 2016 Wings Over the Rockies theme is “Reflections on Water”, birding is an ever-present focus throughout the festival. Twenty-two events are devoted specifically to birding, and the nature hikes and water events all promise bird sightings.

Venues range from north to south in the Columbia Valley from Monday, May 9th to Sunday, May15th. On Monday, meander with Ellen Zimmerman through the Moberley Marsh north of Golden. On Tuesday, explore with Cam Gillies the watery haunts of “Wacky Waterbirds!” near Invermere, or join the “Birding by Golf Cart” convoy through the Riverside Golf Course with Fairmont Hot Spring’s BC Rockies Adventure Guides.

On Wednesday, with Cathy Parkes, discover the Columbia Valley’s osprey and eagle nesting sites or, with Daryl Calder, track the swifts frequenting the Fairmont Hoodoos. Farther south, join Dean Nicholson on Friday at Wasa Lake and Bummers Flats where he has seen over 50 species of birds during one visit.

Truth hard to find regarding Columbia River use The caption in the April 8 Pioneer was; “Public input sought on horsepower limit for Columbia”.

As far as MP Wayne Stetski, Radium Mayor Clara Reinhardt and RDEK director Gerry Wilkie go, the decision has been made and pesky public input will only cost them more delays. They, along with Wildsight and it’s predecessors have been trying to make this their legacy for 19 years and are desperate to see it completed. They do not want your input and they don’t want the truth to come forward. Why spoil a good argument with facts?

There has never been any valid environmental, safety or other reason to support it. Their legacy has taken this long because even Transport Canada, (before Trudeau) thought it was completely unwarranted. We have the reports and chronological printed history to prove it.

Don’t continue to be misled and believe they want input, far from it. Valley residents from Fairmont to, and especially Golden, have vehemently opposed a HP regulation on the Columbia since it was first illegally imposed in 1997. Former Golden resident Mr. Jim Sime, a distinguished and highly respected former superintendent of Banff/Kootenay Park for more than 30 years lectured me over 15 years ago on how important it was to stop this unnecessary regulation. He was as right then as he would be now. If Mr. Sime were alive today he would have himself already hand written this recapiliation of the truth I’m submitting.

I won’t drag you through the chronological history because it fills volumes but there has been five separate consultation

processes and every time the HP restriction was denied. The cost as reported by Transport Canada in 2009 was over $2.5M. The question is still, why?

In the 28 years I have been river boating on the Columbia, including being a steward helping people in need and cleaning up garbage, old tires and even a hot water tank, there has never been a valid reported misuse or safety issue. On the contrary, for floaters that are half way to Radium when a weather front comes in from the north and they are stranded and freezing, a powerboat is a literal lifesaver. Been there.

Unfortunately chances are you won’t see one because there is very little powerboat use on the Columbia having been bullied away over the years. The powerboat users that do enjoy the river are most respectful of other non-power users. Too bad it doesn’t go the other way.

Proposed now is an Amendment to a superfluous regulation that took Wilkie & co. 15 years to secure. Their next Amendment will come to eliminate powerboat use on the Columbia altogether and ultimately on Lake Windermere too which is only a widening of the Columbia. Their quest to dictate who can enjoy the mighty Columbia River never ends.

Ironical thing is they have never enjoyed it themselves.

We produced a documentary movie as part of a submission to Transport Canada in 2003 titled “Who should use the River” (This can be viewed on YouTube by searching Boating Restrictions on the Columbia River BC or following this link www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4jShletIBI).

This is still the issue before us now. It’s not the environment

or safety. The people addressed at the start of this article want to make the river “just for a select few” not for others who have respectfully enjoyed the river for decades or newcomers.

The proponents of this regulation and the coconspirators in the current Transport Canada administration taking part in this charade should be ashamed of themselves for spending their valuable publically paid time on a problem that doesn’t exist.

Isn’t their attention better served on more constructive and needed societal or real environmental problems?

Colourful Canadian painters come together at Artym

By Candice Blakley The Artym Gallery The Artym Gallery is welcoming the new season with a “Celebration of Spring Exhibition”, opening Saturday, April 16th from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The gallery will be featuring fresh colourful works by Canadian artists including Rick Bond, Nancy Lucas, Mélan, Danny McBride and Katerina Mertikas.

Rick Bond and Nancy Lucas are relatively new artists to the Artym Gallery. They are both residents of the Okanagan Valley and have contributed many new works to our Celebration of Spring. Rick Bond leans towards a very cool palette for his landscape pieces; he uses bold and gestural strokes to create depth and space within his paintings. Nancy Lucas’ vibrant and contemporary floral arrangements are a stunning and a welcome addition to seasoned and new art collectors alike.

Mélan is an artist with a very distinct style. Her daring choice of colour is very complementary to the simplistic flowers that are the focal point of her creations.

Mélan is a mixed media artist who works very frequently with resin to really accent her elegant arrangements.

Katerina Mertikas is a long-time resident at the Artym Gallery. She was the featured artist on the Map Book cover for 2013. Her pieces are very recognizable with bright colours and little girls with their umbrellas.

Katerina’s naïve expressionistic style accentuates her subject matter of children having fun and playing games.

Students dig into Earth Day

By Breanne Massey Pioneer Staff Teenagers in the Columbia Valley are hoping to raise awareness among their peers about climate change by celebrating Earth Day within the community.

David Thompson Secondary School (DTSS) Grade 12 students Annie Zehnder, Amira El Wakeel, Anna Aris and Taylor Hart have independently organized an interactive open house with support from environmentally-geared organizations in the valley between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Friday, April 22nd at the Groundswell Network Society’s community greenhouse that’s adjacent to the high school.

The goal behind celebrating Earth Day is to help students keep tabs on climate change and engage their peers for the environmental challenges ahead.

“We organized it through the Leadership Class last year and we really enjoyed it, so we decided we were going to do it again this year,” said Ms. El Wakeel.

“We took it on independently because there’s no Leadership Class this year.”

There will be information booths set up at the greenhouse from organizations such as the Columbia Basin Environmental Education Network (CBEEN),

Wildsight, the Greenways Trail Alliance, Groundswell, the Lake Windermere Ambassadors and the Invermere-based Do Nothing Floatation Centre business intended to engage visitors through hands-on experiences while raising awareness about the environment.

“Greenways is going to set up a virtual bike simulation that makes people feel like they’re on a trail,” Ms. El Wakeel explained, noting there was no shortage of interest and support from local groups. “We have a lot of local organizations that are coming as well as our own activities as well. We wanted to incorporate all of the senses.”

She added visitors will be enthralled to hear, see, touch, smell and taste at the wide variety of interactive booths at the fair.

There is no admission fee to attend the open house. Kindergarten students at Eileen Madson Primary School will be dropping by and anybody from the community who wishes to stop in is invited.

“It’ll be simple enough for the kindergarteners to be engaged but there’s enough content there for anyone to be entertained or learn more about an environmental issue in our community,” concluded Ms. El Wakeel about the locally organized Earth Day event.

Butterfly Gala returns

By Breanne Massey Pioneer Staff The Hospice Society of the Columbia Valley will be hosting its 4th Annual Butterfly Gala at the Radium Course Banquet Hall at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 30th.

“We are in a situation right now where we need to get and train more volunteer visitors because the numbers continue to grow in terms of the number of people who need our services and we’re going to be doing another round of training,” said Maria Kliavkoff, Hospice Society executive director, while adding all of the proceeds from the gala event will be going back to the Hospice Society of the Columbia Valley. “Many of these funds are used to support the ongoing training of our volunteers… Starting in June, we’re going to be training the bereavement visitor volunteers.”

She said there has been an increasing number of families mourning the loss of loved ones, which has encouraged the society to secure additional volunteers.

“We’ve had so much loss in the valley recently,” explained Ms. Kliavkoff.

“Of the last 12 deaths in the valley, Hospice was involved in seven of them so not only do we support the families during an end-of-life diagnosis, but we support the family following the death and into bereavement.”

There will be 21 hours of training completed by volunteers over two weekends in a row this June and 18 hours of training at the College of the Rockies (COTR) for volunteers interested in becoming bereavement facilitators for walk-and-talk groups in August.

“The walk-and-talk groups we do up and down the valley whenever two people identify that they could really use a walk and talk about the same kind of loss, so two people who have lost a spouse or two people who have lost a mother or two people who have lost a father,” she explained about the summer program that’s funded by proceeds raised at the gala. “People with identical losses get partnered with one of our facilitators and they go for a walk once a week for six weeks.”

Manage moisture to keep pests out

By James Rose Special to The Pioneer The black carpenter ant is a common invader of buildings in the East and West Kootenay. Homes and places of business built in wooded areas are particularly prone to infestation.

Normally, the ants nest in logs, stumps and hollow trees, but will also invade a person’s home in search of food.

The largest risk these pesky critters pose is compromising a building’s structural damage. This is especially true as buildings age.

The new frontier for innovative living

Access to sport and participation in sport is an integral part of any childhood. Golf is a lifelong sport that on its own provides physical activity, mental acuity and the thrill of sport; however when golf is played along with other sports, golf has been shown to vastly support a better developed athlete. Golf is also in great supply in the Columbia Valley, which makes getting involved in golf even easier.

The 2016 Columbia Valley Golf Junior Tour is ready to launch and is actively recruiting all levels of golfers aged five to 12, including those who have never picked up a club. This year’s Junior Tour will focus heavily on player development: providing instruction, mentoring and coaching over six weekly sessions.

The Junior Tour will kick off on Wednesday, April 20th at Windermere Valley Golf Course with two sessions where participants will build their skills with instruction donated by local golf professionals from all eight member courses of the Trail. Participants will then “get out and golf” at Creekside Course in Fairmont Hot Springs on May 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th, where they will be grouped by skill level and coached on the course again by local golf professionals. Growing the game of golf is a focus for all golf professionals, golf courses and the Columbia Valley Golf Association. Supporting the Junior Tour is one of the ways the game is grown locally: working in schools across the valley, providing golf learning equipment to valley schools and providing on-the-course experiences for valley schools are some of the other ways the game is grown here.

All eight courses along the Trail participate in the national movement to “Take a Kid to the Course” — a weeklong free golf experience in July of each year. Columbia Valley Golf Trail courses also offer specific junior golfer and family focused pricing and packages throughout the season.

Douglas Patrick Kelly “Doug” 1953 – 2016 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, sonin-law, brother-in-law and brother, Douglas Patrick Kelly on Thursday, April 7th, 2016 in Invermere, B.C. at 63 years of age.

Doug was born on February 11th, 1953 in New Glasgow, NS. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. Doug also enjoyed going for a cruise in his 1963 Ford Galaxie convertible up to the classic car show in Radium Hot Springs, B.C. in September and attending the local show and shine gatherings.

Doug is survived by his loving wife Sylvia, son Patrick (Aimeé), daughters Jacquie (Chris), Sharon (Gordon) and Elizabeth (Fraser), 7 grandsons, 2 granddaughters, his brother Jimmy (Darlene), sisters Glenda (Bob) and Millie (Terry) and his nieces and nephews. Doug was predeceased by his father Edward, mother Mildred, brothers Ally and Ronnie, his sister Patricia and nephew David.

Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will take place in Trenton, NS at a later date. Those wishing to make a memorial donation in Doug’s honour may do so to the IWK Health Centre, Suite B220, 5855 – Spring Garden Road, Halifax, NS, B3H 4S2 or a charity of your choice.

S OBITUARY S Annabelle Margaret Maundrell

February 21st, 1926 – April 1st, 2016

Our beloved mother passed away peacefully on April 1st 2016 after a short illness, with her family at her side.

Annabelle (Ann) was born, the youngest of six children, in Hague, Saskatchewan to Maria and Tobias Unruh. After the death of her father the family moved to BC. Ann married Robert Royce (Roy) Maundrell in 1948. Ann and Roy moved to Windermere in 1959 and lived most of their lives in the Columbia River Valley. Roy passed away in 1991, after which Ann moved to Kamloops in 1999 to be closer to family. She is survived by her three sons, Robert (Marielle), Malcolm David (Wanda) and Christopher (Glynnis), grandchildren, Jennifer, David, Alice Malcolm, Heather, seven great grandchildren and sister, Frieda Caldwell. Ann was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed. No services are planned. The ashes of Ann and Roy will be interned at the Old Hague Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations are graciously appreciated to the BC Cancer Society.

Recipe Of The Week VEGETARIAN BUTTER CHICKEN

2 large Tomatoes, diced 1 ½ tbsp Whipping Cream 2 tbsp Sour Cream 1 ½ tbsp Red Curry Paste 1 tsp Tumeric Powder

350 g Tofu, cubed 1 tbsp Oil 1 cup frozen Peas 1 cup Cashews, chopped

Add tomatoes, whipping cream, sour cream, curry paste and turmeric to a blender or food processor.

Blend until smooth.

In a medium skillet, pan-fry cubed tofu in oil until all sides are browned.

Add the peas and cashews.

Add the blended ingredients and simmer until hot.

Serve with rice.

Love thyself: self-love is not an easy task

Much can be said about meditation, faith and choosing right action, and how it organically sows and inevitably reaps a happy person. There is one other component to happiness that I feel is necessary to add to the collection, and that is self-love.

We are all born with unconditional love of self, but over time it begins to fade. We are taught to conform to what is accepted by society and, sadly, this often carves away at our tolerance and acceptance of ourselves and others. Our parents, unintentionally and with deep affec-

tion, instill their greatest fears into us.

No matter how the effects of our life experience have shaped us, cultivating self-love is our own responsibility.

Becoming bitter, resentful or blaming others can be most damaging to one’s self. We may alienate loved ones with misplaced resentment or anger, followed by feelings of isolation.

Have you ever met a person who always has problems with others mistreating them? They feel victimized by everyone or everything? They feel they must villainize others to hide their own inadequacies, to feel justified or deflect responsibility. Fears, worries and insecurities are carefully projected outward to avoid blame.

Such suffering can be relieved by taking responsibility for our lives, taking responsibility for what we have created in them, and learning to unconditionally

love ourselves again. With a bit of tenacity, some faith and a good support system, we can find that place again.

This may be the single most important thing we can do for ourselves. It is powerful and has a wonderful ripple effect, because loving ourselves and cultivating self-esteem will likely ensure positive and healthy relationships with every other person in our lives.

Once we start treating ourselves the way we would have others treat us, with respect and consideration, then we will see a marked improvement from the victimized way of being that we experienced before. This is liberating and it gives us momentum to keep up the good work.

“The work” can be viewed as somewhat daunting because it means looking at our flaws, and no one is really comfortable with that. Nor is anyone usually comfortable with loving themselves

through those flaws because blaming or going into judgement and then self-condemning is what we’re used to.

These are all normal processes we may go through and, with a bit of guidance, we can change the more damaging habits. Constant and limitless love and forgiveness of self will set you on the right path.

When we are successful at cultivating our self-esteem, we have healthy boundaries and we are not distracted by what others think of us. We are non-judgemental, patient with ourselves and others, loving and considerate towards all.

Don’t run from challenges

By Laura Hermakin Reverend Christ Church Trinity Easter is the time of resurrection — when Christians celebrate the triumph of life over death and God’s love for the world. Even as we proclaim Christ’s resurrection, we remember that there remains a lot of brokenness and pain in the world.

There are many who are struggling to see and experience the light of that love, and the light of the resurrection. But, the Easter story is continuously unfolding because life is being restored and it is a story of hope, resurrection and life rising up in spite of death.

I love fairy tales, especially the cleaner versions, because there’s something good about them; a way of confronting what’s tough in life with genuine hope.

So here we are in the holy season of Easter, the season of new life and fresh hope, enjoying the brightness of spring once again; some of us perhaps feeling a little like we have emerged from a dark place to a new beautiful world. Yet, this isn’t a fairy tale.

This season called Easter isn’t a fairy tale, but the revelation of ultimate reality. It’s easy to dismiss or discount this, as we do with fairy tales, as naïve — nice, but naïve.

It’s easy to dismiss Easter as a great hope, a wonderful ideal, but not realistic in our world, because the way the world often operates is not working out. It’s not sustainable. It’s not the way to life. Jesus has shown us the way.

He has shown us that unselfish, sacrificial love, love of God and love of the other, is the way to life. That’s the ultimate reality, and that’s not a fairy tale.

When Jesus showed us what love looks like, his way was the way of life and hope. When he died, his closest followers feared that maybe the strong do survive, maybe strength does always win, ‘cause maybe the world has won. But three days later, something happened — unexpected — undreamed of — their world turned right-side up. In the end, love wins! Love is the way! Resurrection is real. This is not a fairy tale.

Living this side of Easter, we are people gathered around the expectation that life conquers death, hope triumphs over despair and love wins. And, if there is one thing we should also expect, it’s that the timing and the way we experience resurrection is as unpredictable and often unrecognizable as a stranger meeting us on the road or a gardener surprising us at dawn or peace breaking through our fear-filled and locked up places.

Free golf for the food bank One hundred and fourty-four golfers took advantage of free golf and comfortable spring weather conditions at Eagle Ranch Golf Resort on Tuesday, April 5th, when Eagle Ranch hosted its 2nd annual Valley Appreciation Day that supports the Columbia Valley Food Bank. Generous valley residents helped raise $198 for the food bank and filled a half-truck full of non-perishable food.

YOUR MONEY Federal budget 2016

The new Liberal government delivered its first federal budget on March 22nd in Ottawa. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spent heavily in this budget, leading to a projected $29.4 billion shortfall this year. On a positive note, most Canadians will benefit from the changes.

Here are some of the key changes, and a few things that stayed the same.

Corporate Class Mutual Funds After September 2016, switches between corporate class mutual funds will no longer be tax-free. Instead, the shares will be deemed to be disposed of, and regular capital gains rules will apply. Canadians with corporate class mutual funds are encouraged to meet with their advisor to discuss any switches they might want to make.

Small Business Changes The previous government introduced a plan to reduce the tax rate on the first $500,000 of active business income from 11 to nine per cent by 2019. The Liberals are freezing the rate at its current level of 10.5 per cent.

The 2016 budget also outlined changes to how eligible capital property (ECP), such as goodwill and other intangible assets, are amortized over time. The net result will be less favourable to the taxpayer, and is expected to generate the government $220 million from 2016 to 2018.

OAS, CPP and EI Great news for folks born on April 1st, 1958 or later: the OAS and GIS ages of eligibility have been rolled back to 65 for all Canadians, wiping out the Conservatives’ plan to raise eligibility requirements to age 67.

The EI waiting period will be reduced from two weeks to one, effective January 2017. Among other enhancements, the Feds plan on extending EI benefits in certain regions where unemployment is highest; for instance, in Alberta due to the oil crisis.

Though there has been talk of enhancing the CPP, most likely through higher contributions, no official changes have been made yet.

The Liberals also announced plans to phase out the children’s fitness tax credit and children’s arts tax credit.

The credits, worth up to $150 and $75 respectively, will be cut in half for 2016 and eliminated for 2017.

Effective in 2017, education and textbook tax credits will be eliminated, but the tuition tax credit will remain the same.

Income Splitting As expected, the Liberals put an end to income splitting for families with children under age 18. Spouses may still split eligible pension income.

Notably Absent After much speculation in the financial media, Canadians can breathe a sigh of relief: the capital gains inclusion rate will remain at 50 per cent. The inclusion rate reached a high of 75 per cent in the 1990s, before being reduced to 50 per cent in the year 2000. In their election campaign, the Liberals said they would change the rules to allow people to dip into their RRSPs more than once to buy a home, however, this was not in the budget.

Canada Child Benefits The Canada Child Benefit replaces the Canada Child Tax Benefit and the Universal Child Care Benefit.

Unlike before, the new CCB is tax-free, with the Liberals estimating that nine out of 10 families will receive more in child benefits than under the current system. The government will pay up to $6,400 per child under age six and up to $5,400 per child for those aged six through 17. Benefits begin to phase out starting at $30,000 in

Final Thoughts Even if many of the provisions don’t directly impact you, the effects of them likely will. Though decidedly unfavourable towards businesses, Budget 2016 should put more money in the pockets of the average Canadian, stimulating spending and thus encouraging growth.

Growth brings higher corporate earnings and share prices, as well as inflation and higher interest rates. There’s bound to be something positive in there for everyone.
