Fentanyl overdoses in valley a growing concern

By Breanne Massey Pioneer Staff Fentanyl has caused several fatal overdoses in B.C. since it became a deadly opioid known for harming people who are using street drugs.

The Columbia Valley RCMP believe that now the problem is a growing concern to residents in the surrounding area after fielding an increasing number of calls for help during overdoses this spring.

“It’s a problem that’s obviously hit Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta,” said Cpl. Brent Ayers. “They’ve all been dealing with it and it was only a matter of time before it filtered here, into the valley.”

He added there have been six calls for service to the

Columbia Valley RCMP this March alone to ensure it’s safe for BC Ambulance staff to attend overdoses in the valley.

More than one-third of illicit drug overdoses are related to the use of fentanyl in B.C., according to a recent report in the Globe and Mail. The BC Coroners Service shows that the percentage of fentanyl-related deaths has increased every year, from a total of 13 in 2012 to 146 in 2015.

In addition, the BC Coroners Service indicates that illicit drug overdose death averages increased from 16.8 total in 2007 to 66.0 total in 2016.

“I’ve been here for 11 years or so, and we have had overdoses over the course of the 11 years that I’ve been here, with needle injection, cocaine or crack, but it’s been

fairly good for the last three years,” said Cpl. Ayers. “But I’ve only really become aware of it (the increasing use of fentanyl) in 2016 so there’s been a change.”

Fentanyl is an inexpensive synthetic opioid that can be up to 100 times more potent than morphine. It was developed for medical professionals to treat severe and chronic pain, but has become a risk for opioid users.

The Interior Health Authority (IHA) allows medical professionals to treat patients who are overdosing in Invermere and Cranbrook with Naloxone — an antidote that is known to reverse the effects of an opioid overdose (fentanyl, heroin or morphine) within minutes. Afterwards, the patients are provided support services to aid and assist with detox.

Deer relocation study moves to monitoring phase

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff The urban deer relocation trial study being conducted in several East Kootenay communities, including Invermere, has completed the capturing and moving of deer and is now monitoring the progress of them in their new, more natural habitat.

The relocation study team was in Invermere on Monday, February 22nd through to Wednesday, February 24th, during which time the biologists and volunteers involved managed to catch 13 deer and then release them into the backcountry west of Canal Flats.

“Our capture work has wrapped up. Overall, it went fairly well,” lead project biologist Ian Adams told The Pioneer, adding that the project managed to catch and relocate 60 deer in total from all the communities in which it was running.

Of the 13 urban deer moved from Invermere, seven (all adult does) were fitted with radio collars, which will allow the biologists to track their movements in their new ranges. All the deer caught in Invermere were does or fawns, with the possible exception of one juvenile buck.

The study had a permit to catch as many as 80 deer, but Mr. Adams said the number of deer caught was not the point of the project.

“Our objective was not to move as many deer as possible, but rather to learn about how the process of relocation works, how it goes for the deer,” he said.

The radio collars are tracked through satellites and the study gets an updated location from each collar every 13 hours.

RCMP Report Submitted by Cpl. Grant Simpson Columbia Valley RCMP Columbia Valley RCMP responded to approximately 64 calls for service over the past week. Here are just a few of them: • On Tuesday, March 15th at 9:32 a.m., Columbia Valley RCMP responded to a complaint of a break and enter and theft of a boat and trailer at a business located in the Industrial Park of Invermere.

The complainant who was the business owner reported that his locked compound was broken into overnight, the gate was taken off, and a boat on a trailer was taken.

Video surveillance shows a couple of suspects skulking inside the yard, where they manipulated the gate, drove a Ford F350 extended cab in, hooked up to the boat and drove out. The boat is a 2010 black Tige RZR and the trailer is a 2010, registered out of Alberta.

Total loss is approximately $63,000. This occurred approximately between 12:30 a.m. and 2 a.m. Police took photos and seized several items of evidentiary value. Video surveillance has also been obtained. At approximately 6:40 p.m., dispatch reported that a brown 2005 Ford F350 was stolen from another business in the Industrial Park sometime overnight. Police confirmed that this was the Ford that was used to steal the boat. Police continue to investigate and have some very strong leads. Police are asking anyone with any further information regarding this incident to contact them or Crimestoppers where they can remain anonymous.

• On Tuesday, March 15th at 6:40 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP were dispatched to a theft of vehicle from a business in the Industrial Park of Invermere. The complainant and registered owner reported that his brown 2005 Ford F350 was stolen sometime overnight. The owner reported that he had it parked at the local business as it required repairs. Police spoke with the business owner who reported that at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 14th, he parked the Ford in the lineup of cars in front of the shop on the south end of the property and confirmed that it was locked. The owner advised that they did not know it was missing until the afternoon

of March 15th. Total loss is approximately $18,000. The owner of the truck reported that he was unsure if there was a spare key in the Ford, and that his tank was full. Contents in the Ford total approximately $300.

Video surveillance of a boat and trailer that were stolen in the early morning of March 15th confirms that the Ford was used to steal them. As noted above, this investigation is ongoing with some very sound leads.

Anyone with further information is asked to contact police or Crimestoppers.

• On Wednesday, March 16th, a 45-year-old female resident of Kootenay No. 3 Road called Columbia Valley RCMP to report that she had just returned from the vet with her dog, a cinnamon Blue Heeler, that appeared to have been poisoned. She brought her dog to the vet in Invermere where the vet agreed the dog was exhibiting signs of having been poisoned. The dog owner has no idea how the dog was poisoned, when it was poisoned, what it was poisoned with or who may have done it. She was obviously upset about the incident and believes someone is targeting local dogs as they are upset about dogs roaming free in this area. The owner could not specify who is upset about the dogs running free without their owners having them on leashes and had no suspects in mind. There was no evidence that the dog was purposely poisoned as opposed to having possibly ingested a poison accidentally.

• On Sunday, March 20th, a 46-year-old Canal Flats woman called Columbia Valley RCMP to report a 30-person fight outside a local drinking establishment in Canal Flats. The complainant stated that there were no injuries at that point. Police attended in short order and found no one outside or inside the bar. Bar owners advised the fight was probably eight people, quick to start, quick to end, with no injuries and no police attendance required.

The owners apologized for the intoxicated patron having called for police.

• On Sunday, March 20th at 9:45 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP were dispatched to a report of a disturbance/mischief at a local hotel, in Invermere. The complainant reported that an intoxicated 20-year-old male and Continued on page 8 . . .

Fighting fentanyl

You can’t see, smell or taste fentanyl. As little as two milligrams — an amount equal to a couple of salt crystals — can be fatal. Other drugs can easily be cut with it so users don’t even know they’re taking it until it’s too late. As the fentanyl-related overdose rate and death count also rises, the question of how to curb this trend is what local authorities are trying to tackle. The distribution of take-home Naloxone kits is a short-term strategy to stop people from dying, but presents a new problem: if users have a handy way out that reverses the lethal effects of fentanyl (whereby breathing slows until it eventually stops, causing death or brain damage), the deterrent to chasing the intense euphoric high that fentanyl delivers becomes less powerful.

A person’s intention to take this synthetic opiate recreationally can almost immediately lead into a full-blown addiction. While the take-home kits help cope with the imminent danger of death, they do nothing to cope with the mental health issues that arise from addiction.

Earlier this year, the alarm was sounded about a new drug being concocted in Calgary before getting introduced to B.C.’s drug trade — W-18 is up to 100 times stronger than fentanyl, so strong that in the case of an overdose, administering Naloxone would be too late. Since prohibiting access to drugs never seems to work, the focus needs to be on new and improved social services — education, prevention, counselling and treatment — for the long-term fix.

Clarification Radium fire chief Dave Dixon contacted The Pioneer to clarify that the Radium fire department was not involved in putting out the debris fire burning at Radium Resort late in February. Only Mr. Dixon was present at the scene, not any other Radium firefighters, and he was only on hand to monitor progress and the clean up of hot spots, not to actually fight the fire. The resort undertook its own efforts to put the blaze out, although the resort is part of the Radium fire protection district. “There was no threat to people or homes; it was just a smoke management issue,” said Mr. Dixon. He added it would also be unfair for Radium taxpayers to foot the bill for putting out the fire.

Disagree with doctor’s point of view Dear Editor: Re: “Doubtful about thermography” letter to the editor in the March 18th Pioneer.

Pretty scathing article from a doctor discrediting other medical alternative professionals such as naturopaths. They also have had years of medical university, etc. I personally have turned towards the natural path of taking care of health responsibly and try not to rely on doctors and pharmaceuticals. The biggest part of this, I found, is education on prevention of illness; also, when illness occurs, educating and reviewing options with my health care provider, currently the naturopath.

If I should have a broken bone, etc., the medical

doctor will be the go-to professional.

After watching The Truth about Cancer series in its entirety, cancer is one of those illnesses that clearly has alternative treatments much, much more effective than the current “Big 3” — chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.

Chemotherapy has a three per cent success rate of survival past five years without reoccurrence, or actual studies show chemo is 97 per cent ineffective.

If you did nothing, chances of you surviving are 25 per cent just by avoiding sugar, which cancer loves.

Radiation also kills your immune system — healthy cells. Talk about expensive treatment that doesn’t appear to be covered by Medicare!

Jumbo Wild documentary launches on Netflix

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff The Jumbo Wild documentary was released on Netflix earlier this month and, according to Instantwatcher. com, quickly became one of the most watched programs south of the border.

“For one day in that first week (following the film’s Tuesday, March 8th release on Netflix), it was the ninth most watched program on Netflix USA and it hovered in that top 15 all week,” said Wildsight executive director Robyn Duncan. “Jumbo Wild was released on Netflix Canada, USA and others.”

Ms. Duncan said she did not know how the film had fared on Netflix Canada.

Patagonia global public relations and communications director Adam Fletcher told The Pioneer that Patagonia couldn’t comment directly on the ranking or validate it, since Netflix doesn’t release such data. The popularity tracking is done instead by the Instantwatcher website, and Patagonia is not familiar with how Instantwatcher collects its information.

But both Ms. Duncan and Mr. Fletcher said putting the film on Netflix has been a boon to Jumbo Glacier Resort opponents.

“I was blown away to hear this news. I’ve tried to imagine how many thousands upon thousands of people

are watching this story around the world, but it’s impossible. We’ve been flooded with support,” said Ms. Duncan. “While I was shocked to hear how quickly it rose to the top 10; I wasn’t surprised. Since this film was released in October, and as it’s toured the world, it has deeply touched and resonated with people, moving them to action, and inspiring them to get involved in land use issues in their backyards.”

“Launching Jumbo Wild on Netflix has already made a big difference for our campaign. In just a few days, the number of people who have signed their name in support of permanent protection for the Jumbo Valley has jumped by 10,000. The petition now has more than 33,000 signatures — that’s huge. Netflix is giving Jumbo Wild a far broader audience and we’re very happy to see so many more people learning about this important issue and getting involved as a result of the film,” said Mr. Fletcher. “Going forward, we hope the film continues to gain momentum. The Sweetgrass (film production) team put so much heart into creating an amazing film that really digs deep into a complex story. We’re thrilled at the response.”

Mr. Fletcher added that the film so far has been shown in 19 countries, been part of 35 film festivals, and had 200 screenings, during which 31,700 attendees watched it.

“Wildsight plans to deliver all the signatures they’ve

collected to the government of B.C. in the coming months, so the film is getting a major boost at the right time,” he said. “This growing momentum is a continuation of several months of excitement around the film we’ve built since the film’s premiere in November.”

The Pioneer was unable to get comment from local Wildsight branch president Baiba Morrow, as she is away, but was able to reach her husband and long-time Jumbo resort opponent Pat Morrow, who recommended another anti-resort film.

“To its credit, the Jumbo Wild film touches on the morality, or lack thereof, of trying to bulldoze the sacred space of the Ktunaxa, and the home of the Grizzly Bear Spirit. However, it glosses over the practical reasons why a dead-end ski resort proposal that spans several crevasse-ridden glaciers and dozens of avalanche slopes is doomed to fail,” he said. “As a companion piece to this well-funded film, I highly recommend Jumbo the White Elephant, a rough-edged, 10-minute video by Ralph Moore of Creston that has been seen by nearly 12,000 viewers. The zero budget film exposes the economic and logistical folly of an attempted real estate grab that has thus far been funded by B.C. taxpayers’ money. Wings readies to land in valley

By Jami Scheffer, Events Co-ordinator Wings Over the Rockies Festival The 2016 Wings Over the Rockies Festival celebrates the natural world of the Columbia Valley with a record 113 events scheduled from May 9th to 15th.

This year’s theme “Reflections on Water” celebrates our most precious resource with scientific presentations on water quality conservation, birding expeditions into the wetlands, and paddling trips on the Columbia River.

Our keynote speaker is Dr. David Schindler, an internationally renowned scientist who will address “Protecting Canada’s Freshwaters in the 21st Century” in his keynote presentation at the Saturday (May 14th) night Gala Banquet. He will also deliver a luncheon talk, “Preventing Algae Blooms”, and joins Heather Leschied and Rick Nordin to instruct the LakeKeepers’ workshop.

Splash of colour featured at Artym Submitted by The Artym Gallery “Look at all the colour” is an often-heard exclamation from people entering into The Artym Gallery. There is no denying that the current taste is for artwork with more vibrant colours (and texture).

Seeing the shift happening, and always wanting to challenge their artists, The Artym Gallery decided to create a show series that took everything back to the basics. So began the “Black, White, and a Splash of Colour” shows. The newest show is on display until the end of March.

What makes this series featuring 15 artists so different is the absence of colour. Colour is used to please the eye, to convey emotion, and to draw attention to a particular spot.

Take that away and the painter has to be knowledgeable in grey tones and comfortable using them, saving that “splash” of colour to be the final and decisive piece in the painting.

“It’s harder to get the depth”; “You can’t lead the eye with vibrancy”; “I can’t hide a mistake as easily” are some of the comments painters have. “It’s not what I normally do” sums it up.

The paintings, though, are fantastic!

Picture a Cedar Waxwing sitting on a branch with a red berry in its beak, or a shaft of sunlight shining down on Castle Mountain during a break in the storm, or children in bright coats playing in the snow on an otherwise dreary day.

YOUR MONEY Strategic income investing

Fixed income investors face a unique set of challenges in the quest for yield. Here’s how to get more yield in this space without moving into equities using three strategies: high-yield bonds, global bonds and floating rate loans.

Generating income With interest rates at historic lows, it can be difficult finding even modest yields among government bonds in developed parts of the world such as Canada and the U.S. If one’s risk tolerance allows it, other sources of yield, such as high-yield bonds, floating rate loans and global or emerging market bonds, should be considered.

High-yield bonds can deliver a yield advantage because they are subject to greater credit risk than many other types of bonds. Floating rate loans are revolving lines of credit issued to corporations through commercial or investment banks. As they are generally secured with collateral, the risk of loss due to default tends to be lower than some other investments. And global bonds may be able to offer an income advantage, particularly those in faster-growing economies with low debt-toGDP ratios.

Rising interest rates In the case of rising interest rates, it’s a question of when — more than if — it will happen. To help manage the effects of rising rates, consider investments

that actually benefit from interest rate increases, such as floating rate loans.

Floating rate loans reset their interest rate every 30 to 90 days to match a benchmark rate plus a premium to compensate the lender (investor) for risk. As the benchmark rate increases, so do floating rate loan yields.

Another strategy is to hold bonds that are less sensitive to interest rate increases than government bonds, such as high-yield or short-term bonds. High-yield bonds tend to have low correlations to government bond yields, and short-term bonds of both governments and corporations tend to be less affected due to their short duration.

Inflation protection According to the Bank of Canada’s January 2016 Monetary Policy Report, growth in Canada’s economy is expected to reach 1.4 per cent this year and accelerate to 2.4 per cent in 2017. Simultaneously, the average five-year Government of Canada bond yield is 0.64 per cent. It doesn’t take a mathematician to see that current Government of Canada bond yields won’t keep up with inflation and over time will erode the purchase power of a fixed income portfolio.

One of the ways that central banks control inflation is by raising interest rates. This can cause difficulty for bond investors as bond prices have an inverse relationship with interest rates: when interest rates rise,

bond prices fall and vice versa. It’s a double whammy for fixed income investors who may experience falling bond values at the same time as inflation is diminishing their purchasing power.

Fortunately, this risk can be mitigated while remaining in a fixed income portfolio. Floating rate loans are designed to preserve their price in a rising interest rate environment by passing on interest rate increases to their borrowers. Investors in these loans benefit from yields that rise in lock step with central bank rates, preserving the price of their investment and helping protect against the effect of inflation.

Another strategy is to buy global or high-yield bonds purely for the yield advantage they provide over standard Government of Canada or US Federal bonds.

Care should be taken, however, to ensure that defaults are kept to a minimum. Using a managed solution such as a mutual fund can help alleviate this risk.

Final thoughts For low-risk and retired investors, finding yield through fixed income securities is necessary. It’s important to understand, however, that not all fixed income investments are suitable for everyone. Living in the beautiful Columbia Valley is akin to living on nature’s doorstep.

Rustic charm is the area’s defining quality, but such proximity can also cause problems. A home or place of business is a sizable investment, and when nature’s annoying pests become invasive, challenges arise.

In the unfortunate event that pesky critters do make themselves too difficult to ignore, Invermere Pest Control (IPC) is there to alleviate the problem.

“Living in the mountains puts us in a place where many pests are present through the year,” said owner Darren Ottenbreit.

“Many of the pest issues we run into in the Columbia Valley don’t present a huge risk to the home owner. However, we do have a few pests than can cause some serious issues.

Carpenter ants, which are abundant here in the valley, can cause serious structural issues to any wood-based home or building.”

Launched in the spring of 2014, Invermere Pest Control aims to provide the most effective pest control services while simultaneously doing all that is possible to minimize the use of pesticides and herbicides. “Being proactive is our main goal in providing services in the best possible way,” said Mr. Ottenbreit.

After working for many years as a golf professional, Mr. Ottenbreit relied heavily on pest control professionals to both provide proactive measures to deter pest issues as well as combat any issues the golf courses would run into through the seasons. “After years of dealing with these companies, I felt I could provide a superior service through customer interaction as well as timely and effective services,” said Mr. Ottenbreit.

Products used by pest control companies such as IPC have changed immensely

over the past several years. “Many pesticides and herbicides have been removed from the market and are being replaced with a much safer line of products. The science and government regulations going into ensuring we provide the safest pest control services possible has been fantastic,” said Mr. Ottenbreit.

According to Mr. Ottenbreit, the most common pests in the valley are ants, spiders, box elder bugs (maple bugs), and stink bugs. “With them, we treat the problem through an exterior treatment around the perimeter of a building as well as high activity areas around the exterior. Each issue is approached in its own way dependent upon many circumstances such as building materials, landscaping materials and ways to exclude access points to the building,” he said. Rodents such as mice, voles and packrats can also cause significant damage to a building. “They tend to move a significant amount of insulation when contained in attic or crawlspaces causing serious heat loss over the winters.”

Preventative measures for most invasive insects are aplenty and easy to implement.

“The biggest issue I run into through the year is folks storing things such as fire wood, spare tires, scrap wood and other building supplies against the side of their home. This allows a perfect place for rodents and insects to congregate allowing them ample time to find a way to invade your home,” said Mr. Ottenbreit. Other measures include checking door seals on both man doors as well as garage doors, windows screens and window frames and keeping a healthy landscape free of overgrown grasses and bushes.

Scenario sheds light on avalanche rescue

By Greg Amos Special to The Pioneer History repeated itself for Columbia Valley Search and Rescue earlier this month in a large-scale avalanche rescue scenario based in part on an actual incident near Panorama in 2012.

This year’s exercise, held just out of bounds on the Jessie’s Monster run adjacent to Panorama Mountain Resort on Saturday, March 5th, involved co-ordinating between multiple East Kootenay search and rescue groups, who brought their own personnel, expertise and equipment to bear on a mock scenario that involved nine missing skiers after a large spring avalanche on the steep slope.

“It’s a very large scale accident that isn’t entirely common around here, but it’s something that we want to be prepared for,” said Columbia Valley Search and Rescue president J.C. Morel, who took on the role of search manager in the incident. “That was the idea with having multiple burials and having multiple agencies involved in it as well; not just our local group, but groups from all over the East Kootenay.”

The fictional incident arose a week after a heavy snowfall during a Purcell Mountains avalanche forecast of considerable danger in the alpine and treeline elevations, and moderate danger below treeline. A southwesterly wind had loaded the steep upper slopes of Jessie’s Monster when a group of four skiers wearing avalanche beacons were buried. An additional five skiers were seen in the runout zone further downslope.

The 19 volunteers taking part, including members from the Columbia Valley Search and Rescue, Panorama Fire Department, Panorama Ski Patrol, and search and

rescue members from Cranbrook, Fernie and Trail, began their search in the afternoon and had located the first four buried skiers within 20 minutes. Volunteers used companion rescue methods (using beacons, probes and shovels), Recco Advanced Rescue Technology, and the keen nose of Summit, an avalanche rescue dog in training, for the Columbia Valley group.

RK Heliski provided transport to and from the search site, allowing the group to practise packaging and loading a victim for helicopter transport. Panorama Fire Department member Thomas Dolezal — who took part in a real rescue effort after an April 1st, 2012 avalanche on the same run swept an Invermere woman 200 to 300 metres downslope and over a cliff, causing serious injuries — had a chance to experience the rescue from a victim’s point of view.

“I got to experience being wrapped up in a proper mountain rescue vacuum pack, and feel what it was like to get taken down, and how precarious it could actually be if you were completely broken and in agony,” he said.

The weather during the scenario varied from cloudy to heavy snow to bright sunshine, posing some questions as to whether a helicopter would be able to extract the victim. The practice also offered a chance to explore the minor unexpected hitches that could prove costly in a real rescue.

“You can practise in smaller scenarios, but until you get on the skis and on the snow… there’s always little technical issues that you don’t think will happen,” said four-year Columbia Valley Search and Rescue member Andrew Brennan, who led a probe line aimed at finding skiers buried without beacons.

Mr. Morel, who has worked in search and rescue for 11 years (as a ski patroller and avalanche forecast team member at Panorama Mountain Village, and also as a local search and rescue member since 2008), said several volunteers on March 5th had never taken part in a rescue scenario before.

“To have them come out and see how rescues are performed is a huge learning opportunity for everyone involved,” he said. “Every year I’ve done some sort of organized rescue training and practice. After getting more experience over the years, you start to fill more

of a chief role; getting that kind of experience personally is really valuable.”

The Columbia Valley Search and Rescue co-ordinates an avalanche rescue scenario in February or March every year. Last year’s scenario took place in Paradise Basin (in the Toby Creek Adventures snowmobiling area), and was held on the Elmo run at Panorama the year prior.

The idea is always to explore a scenario within the group’s typical terrain, which spreads as far north as Spillimacheen and south to Canal Flats, west to the height of land in the Purcell Mountains and to the Alberta border in the Rockies.

The Columbia Valley Search and Rescue team is always looking for new members — those with backcountry experience and interest are encouraged to apply by sending an email to columbiavalleysar@gmail.com.

Since the beginning of humankind, walking was what people did — it is a primal activity.

“Not walking” is a new creation. For the most of history, walking was a daily activity. Humans have walked for so long that our bodies now require that we walk. Our health and longevity depend on it. Walking is more than beneficial; it is essential.

Many things have decreased walking. Modern transportation has ruined walking; so have the remote control, the automatic garage door opener, moving walkways, elevators and escalators, and even the grocery store. When we drive, we often stretch to see if there is a parking space just a few feet closer. In a single century, we have gone from walking to trying to avoid walking.

When I was a child, most homes, even in urban centres, had a garden. Members of the household grew a lot of their food and that activity required walking.

Homeowners walked among the rows of fruits and vegetables, but that has now been supplanted by the convenience of a supermarket. It is not that the supermarket is wrong, but rather that walking has diminished and it has not been replaced.

Robert Knight writing in The Joy Of Walking indicated, “Walking stimulates your metabolism to not only burn calories, but to also absorb nutrients and water. The rhythmical contractions of muscles act as a pump circulating blood and oxygen through the body, as well as lymphatic fluids — an important component of the immune system.

Walking is also a weight-bearing activity, unlike swimming, cycling or rowing, which is essential for the development and maintenance of bone and important for preventing conditions such as osteoporosis… walking

is an essential part of our physiology.”

From Harvard Health Publications: “… walking improves cardiac risk factors such as cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, vascular stiffness and inflammation, and mental stress. And if cardiac protection and a lower death rate are not enough to get you moving, consider that walking and other moderate exercise programs also help protect against dementia, peripheral artery disease, obesity, diabetes, depression, colon cancer and even erectile dysfunction.”

The development of Our Trail will offer the benefit of recreation and it just so happens that this also improves our health and fitness.

This project is a winner for our valley. A chance to see nature up close, to exercise without deliberating and, as a bonus, your physical and mental health improves while your life is extended. The trail has a payoff better than winning the lottery since you win every time and you don’t need to waste money on a ticket.

Walking assures your feeling of independence. It is what allows you to sense yourself. As John Muir wrote, “I went out for a walk and found that I was really going in.”

So, if you are able, help build Our Trail, you may find yourself living as Ellen DeGeneres observed, “My grandmother started walking five miles a day when she was 60. She is 97 now, and we don’t know where the heck she is.”

Check the website at www.ourtrail.org and perhaps you too can be helpful in building Our Trail, and reap the joy and benefits from doing so.

Then, you can go for a walk and come back new.

Valley golf courses ready to get into full swing

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff The warmer than normal conditions during the past month have left local golfers eager to get their clubs out, and golf courses up and down the valley are either already open or are readying to do so soon.

Many Upper Columbia Valley golf courses have set today (Friday, March 25th) as their official opening day for the year, just in time to let the Easter Bunny take a swing.

Golfers are already swinging their clubs at the Windermere Valley Golf Course (which has been open since Thursday, March 10th) and at Coy’s Par Three (which has been unofficially open this week, with golfers paying their green frees using the honour box — the course officially opens today), and the rest of the pack is about to follow suit.

Eagle Ranch golf course will open today through to Sunday, March 27th, then close for four days before opening for the season on April 1st. The official opening for Spur Valley Golf Course is Friday, April 1st, but if conditions are good it will be open this weekend, and the Luxor Creek Cantina will open on Saturday, April

9th. The Ridge course at Copper Point Resort is scheduled to open today, and The Point course is scheduled to open on April 1st.

The Riverside course at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort will open today, with the Mountainside course and Creekside (Par Three) course opening on Friday, April 15th. The Springs course in Radium opens today and the Radium Course will open on April 1st.

The Pioneer attempted to contact Edgewater Hilltop Par Three golf course to learn its opening date, but was unable to reach anybody.

The course’s website mentions that the RV park there is now open, but does not list an scheduled opening date for the golf course.

The Greywolf golf course at Panorama Mountain Resort sits at much higher elevation than the other golf courses in the Upper Columbia Valley and consequently does not typically open until some time in May. The Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce will hold the 14th edition of its annual Turn Copper Into Gold golf tournament at the Mountainside golf course at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort on Monday, May 9th.

Fundraising has kicked off to help Sandy Cook

By Breanne Massey Pioneer Staff After battling cancer and a debilitating related condition with high doses of chemotherapy in Cranbrook, Sandy Cook is preparing to receive stem cell therapy treatments in Vancouver starting on April 20th.

The 56-year-old Invermere woman has recently been diagnosed with multiple myeloma and amyloidosis, which has prevented her from working as a legal assistant at MacDonald Thomas Law in Invermere and from volunteering for the Columbia Valley Rockies and WinderSandy Cook mere Valley Minor Hockey Association for several years.

Now, the Columbia Valley community is working toward raising money for Ms. Cook to attend Vancouver-based treatments as both an inpatient and an outpatient this spring.

“When we found out, we gently pushed to find out if there was anything we could do to help as a club as the Columbia Valley Rockies, and as it turns out, the condition she has is very treatable, but she has to respond fully to it,” said Graeme Anderson, event organizer for the upcoming Sandy Cook fundraiser. “In order to do that, we want to help minimize any of the external stresses that she would have, including the financial burden of not being able to work and having to pay, for lack of better words, the hidden costs of treatments for a critical illness where there’s a lot of travel… there’s a lot of cost to that and some of the treatment itself will draw a cost.”

Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell, which are known to help individuals fight infections by making antibodies that recognize and attack germs, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Multiple myeloma causes cancer cells to accumulate in the bone marrow, where they crowd out healthy blood cells. The cancer cells produce abnormal proteins that can cause kidney problems instead of producing helpful antibodies.

In addition, Ms. Cook has been diagnosed with a rare disease known as amyloidosis that occurs when a substance known as amyloid builds up in one’s organs. Amyloid is an abnormal protein that is typically produced in bone marrow, but has the ability to be deposited into any tissue or organ, which can affect different areas of the body in different people and can lead to life-threatening organ failure. While there is no known cure for amyloidosis, there are treatments available to help manage a patient’s symptoms and limit the production of amyloid protein.

At this point, Mr. Anderson and his wife, Noelene, are collecting donations on behalf of the Columbia Valley Rockies Junior B hockey team to raise as much money as possible for Ms. Cook to cover the upcoming treatment costs in Vancouver.

“We want to basically take that stress away and also take the stress away of her paying her bills and living when she comes back home again until she’s able to work again,” he explained, noting there is an online fundraiser for Ms. Cook posted on Crowdrise and a “Sandy Cook Fundraiser” account that has been created to accept community donations at Kootenay Savings.

In addition, collection boxes for donations are being distributed at some of the businesses throughout the Columbia Valley starting with AG Valley Foods.

“We’re also asking for donations from some of the voluntary bodies in the valley that will make funds available for people undergoing hardship,” said Mr. Anderson.

“In addition to that, we run a (recreational) hockey tournament in April every year to raise funds for the club. This year, it’s running between April 22nd and 24th at the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena. We’re going to use it as a platform to fundraise further for Sandy and we hope to attract more local teams than we normally do.”

“We’re basically trying to donate as much as possible from it towards fundraising for Sandy,” he concluded about their friend and coworker the Andersons have known for several years. “For it to be of best benefit to Sandy, we need to raise as much money possible by the end of April because if we do that, she’ll be able to travel for treatment and basically live with her day-to-day finances without any further stress — that’s the big thing. The more stress we can relieve, the better chance she has of making a full recovery.”

When we first moved here two years ago, a friend told me that we’d be amazed at the sense of community and the irrefutable feeling of togetherness here in Invermere.

We are. And it’s really amazing to see and be a part of.

The community as a whole comes together when one of its members is in need. A small town of nearly 4,000 people with big hearts and giving spirits look out for the young, the old, the sick, the hurt and the needy.

I’m at a loss for words, but I only hope that there is comfort in the unity that Invermere and the people who care can provide. It is apparent that these 4,000 big hearts are hurting for those families and individuals who are suffering or who are grieving the loss of a loved one.

B.C.’s new Water Sustainability Act: Does it hold water?

By Megan Peloso Pioneer Columnist In the Ktunaxa language, March literally means when “the melting snow starts flowing.”

Lake Windermere and Columbia Lake have shed their icy layers and, once again, the river’s surface is flowing freely, beating rhythmically against the shores of lake communities, waking us from our winter reverie and nudging all living things to begin stretching out limbs for the coming spring.

So it is apt that the new BC Water Sustainability Act (WSA), the regulations of which have been locked up in the ice of planning over winter, have finally been released to flow as Phase 1.

In May 2014, the B.C. government passed the WSA into law. On February 29th, 2016, a series of new regulations were released — including rates for water extraction and rules for groundwater use — and the new WSA was officially brought into effect through an Order in Council. The new Act updates and replaces

the previous century-old Water Act, and offers a great opportunity to achieve stronger protection of British Columbia’s lifeblood — water.

To meet this opportunity, the Act needs regulations to deal with the complex issues of water objectives, governance, planning, monitoring and enforcement. Or, as my colleague puts it, “the canoe needs a paddle.” Water research groups and sustainability professionals across B.C. and Canada have waded through the new regs and are spotlighting these key facts: • For the first time, non-domestic groundwater users (irrigation, industrial use, water bottling and municipal water use) will require licences and fee payments; • Decision-makers will be required to consider the impact of withdrawals on environmental flow needs for new water users (a licence may not be granted if a stream is over-allocated or if further withdrawal could stress or destroy aquatic ecosystems); • On the other hand, decision-makers will be exempt from considering this impact to environmental flow in the case of current water licence holders, for a transition period of three years (once granted, these licences may not come up for review for another 30 years); • The new rate for water extractions remains very low at a maximum of $2.25 per million litres of water, especially given that revenues from new water rates are

expected to cover the costs of implementing the new Act; • First In Time, First In Right (FITFIR) is maintained, meaning that priority for water rights are given to the oldest water licences, before consideration of environmental flow needs, beneficial use or First Nations rights and title.

The future of water in B.C. depends on the development of water-tight regulations and sustainability plans that take public input and environmental flow protection seriously. Commendable efforts were made by the province to seek public opinion as part of the passing of the Act in 2014. Moving downstream in the forthcoming stages of regulation development, commitment to robust public engagement and transparency must continue to be integral and inclusive of First Nations.

Our lake community has experienced water restrictions and challenges first-hand. If commitment to protecting water “dries up” this early in the season of the Act, how will we as a province make it through the heat of summer, when the regulations are really put to the test? “I got my swagger back,” the 61-year-old Canal Flats man said with a chuckle. “Everybody at the COTR was just fabulous… I would highly recommend the program to anybody.”

Mr. Weisbrodt has plans to open up a community radio station in the Columbia Valley. He is hoping to

use Invermere as the main hub for the business and to have satellite studios in Canal Flats, Radium Hot Springs and Golden in the next two years.

“I’m in the very initial stages doing feasibility studies and stuff like that right now,” he said. “But it looks really good. The feedback has been so positive from everybody.”

The next Targeted Initiative for Older Workers’ job skills training opportunity at the COTR Invermere campus for eligible applicants between the ages of 55 and 64 will be offered between April 4th and July 7th.

The program is geared toward unemployed applicants who are ready to acquire new employment skills or enhance employment skills and integrate into a new ca-

reer. Funding for the program comes from the Government of Canada and the B.C. government.

“Students will have access to incredible instructors, in class learning for 10 weeks and then there’s additional funds up to $1,200 per participant granted based on what (program each one choses to) study with ($300 weekly) income support being offered and possible wage subsidies as well,” said Ms. Morgan.

S OBITUARY S Seel, Eugen November 12th, 1930 – March 19th, 2016 With heavy hearts we announce the passing of a long time valley pioneer, Eugen Seel who passed away peacefully on March 19th, 2016 with family at his side. Eugen was a loving husband of Wanda whom he married in Edgewater in 1951.

They raised 5 children, Darcy (Laurie), Rod (Birgit), Randy (Sherry), Carl (Rozel), Denise (George), and have 11 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and 3 step great-grandchildren. Survived by siblings Edith (Buzz), Herb (Betty), Ingrid, Charlie (Marilyn). Predeceased by his parents Heinz and Gertrud, sisters Helga and Ursula.

S OBITUARY S Smith, Burton Oliver December 14th, 1959 March 7th, 2016 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our wonderful husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle and dear friend.

Eugen was a successful business man who operated a sawmill and logging company (Seel Forest Products) along with his brother Herb as well as his four sons. He was also owner operator of Selkirk Ptarmigan Mines with his cousin Kurt Seel from 1953 - 1958. Thereafter the mine remained dormant until 2008, after which time it was known as Rupetris Mines and was transferred into Silver Mountain mines as a publicly traded company.

Burt is survived by his loving family. Wife Karen of 34 years. His sons Ryan (Tanya), Jerrod (Ashley) and grandchildren Chayton and Jace.

In his younger years he enjoyed playing hockey, baseball, badminton, skiing and was involved with Boy Scouts for a number of years. He was a member of the Lake Windermere Lions Club for over 42 years, serving as both president and zone chairman and he was also a member on the Hospital Board.

Burt loved the power of the throttle and was an extremist in all he did. From driving to repairing his talent shone. He spent most of his working career as a logger, running equipment until his health worsened and he had to downsize.

A Celebration of Life for our dearest Eugen will be held at a later date.

His passions were motor biking, pulling pranks, running the dogs, learning and lending a hand. But his possessions are the love of his family and friends.

Predeceased by his parents Adam and Kathileen, brothers Gary, Jeff and Ken and sister Patricia.

Burt was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and moved to Cranbrook on 1961. After marrying in 1981, Wilmer became his home where he spent his remaining years.

375 g Spaghetti 1 bunch Kale, stemmed & sliced 3 Eggs, lightly beaten

¼ cup Parmesan Cheese, grated 60 g soft Goat Cheese 4 tsp Sun-Dried tomatoes, chopped ¼ tsp Pepper

In large saucepan cook pasta according to package; add kale during last 2 minutes of cooking.

By Matt Moore Associate Pastor, Lake Windermere Alliance Church This past weekend I travelled to Calgary with five high school students to the Legacy Youth Conference held at Ambrose University College. The conference is designed for teens to experience forming new relationships with other students who are just like them and to give them an introduction as to what a relationship with Jesus could be like. We joined students from as far as Kamloops to Regina.

We had a giant barbecue on Friday night and on Saturday after the first rally, the school set up service projects for the students to get involved in. This gave students and leaders a chance to go and see some of the social programs there are in Calgary and provided them with an opportunity to help make a difference.

Our group got on a bus and went to a place called Hope Mission. We went to their camp and some of the students did a deep clean of the kitchens and cabins, and a group of us helped move their headquarters to a new building. Hope Mission started in 1929 as a soup kitchen, but has expanded and grown as they see need in their communities. Today, it serves almost 600 meals to children a week and their service is still needed.

Our students were put in charge of us and as I stepped back and let them give some directions, I heard: “Bring out the bigger furniture first so we can take it apart.” One student shouted as another yelled: “Hey, you two, start moving the food off the shelves so we can disassemble it.” I can’t say that I was surprised these teenagers were so good at planning the best way for them to neatly remove everything from the building, but they did it.

It was a great experience for them, but also a huge exercise in faith for me. I have this tendency to naturally try and take control of a situation when moving furniture, boxes or anything, for that matter, is involved.

I’d hate to brag, but I would say that I’d consider myself good at fitting household furniture in a U-Haul trailer — it’s a lot like Tetris.

During the experience, I wanted to offer my help, assistance and guidance to the students, but I knew I had to hold back and let them accomplish loading the truck all for themselves, even if we were starting to run out of time. I knew that I could make them more efficient with my experience, but they overcame obstacle and problem-solved perfectly. They formed a fire brigade line and split into groups with different responsibilities to maximize their efficiency and sometimes they even stopped to ask each other what the other might do “if they were in charge.”

I am not a father, but I was reminded of the role that a father should take in a child’s life. I believe that a father should be there to provide help, guidance and assistance, but a father also has to let his children make some mistakes so they can learn from their experiences and to learn to trust their father’s wisdom. I had a great dad and decided not to follow his advice so I’ve had to learn from my mistakes, but I’ve also learned to listen to him as well. In the same way Jesus asks us to put that kind of trust and faith in him, his experience and his teachings. We all have the freedom to live life the way we want to or put our faith and trust in all that Jesus was and is and is to be. Jesus doesn’t want you to keep making mistakes and having to learn from your failure. Jesus wants you put your faith in him and learn a new way to live your life. John 14:6.
