World Day of Prayer Great food and fellowship was enjoyed by those who attended the multi-denominational World Day of Prayer service in Fairmont on Friday, March 4th (pictured reading is Irene Hohm). The program was centered around the life of children and women in Cuba and their culture. World Day of Prayer was begun by women in Canada and the United States in 1922 and is now observed in more than 170 countries. A different theme is selected each year. In 2017, the theme of the World Day of Prayer service will be written by the women of the Philippines.

Grants could quadruple Legacy Trail donations

By Breanne Massey Pioneer Staff Any donation made to the Westside Legacy Trail Fundraising Committee (WLTFC) before March 31st could end up being match funded with grants from Columbia Basin Trust and BikeBC up to a maximum total of $1.5 million “Every dollar people contribute, can be matched

by CBT, and that amount can be matched again by BikeBC,” said Mark Halwa, Columbia Valley Greenways Trail Alliance (CVGTA) executive director by email. “So $1 in could be $4 of trail subject to both grants being approved, of course.”

The initiative to quadruple the donations before spring came into play is thanks to two programs targeted at improving trail infrastructure.

“The double matching was a combination of luck

and timing,” said Mr. Halwa. “Luck in that two good grant programs specifically targeted at trail infrastructure both became available when the Columbia Valley has a shovel-ready project. Timing because the CBT grant intake is several weeks before BikeBC’s, which may allow funds from one to be leveraged by the other.”

The proposed 25-kilometre trail will be located on the west side of Lake Windermere, parallel to Westside Road. The CVGTA and WLTFC anticipates the pathway will be five metres wide with a three-metre paved width featuring a painted centre line, and moderately flat with some challenging sections.

The total cost of the project is estimated to cost about $5 million to complete and $1.25 million of that total cost has already been raised for the project so far.

“If we receive the full grant from CBT and BikeBC, that will add another $1.5 million and half the trail will

get built this year,” said Mr. Halwa, while noting the project aims to improve safety, promote healthy lifestyles in the valley, bring the community together and boost tourism numbers.

The goal of the project is to connect the communities between Invermere and Fairmont Hot Springs, and the trail will be open to runners, bicyclists, strollers, wheelchairs and rollerbladers.

“It will create a space which brings together full and part-time residents to develop a tighter sense of community,” said Mr. Hawla. “Our Lake Windermere Whiteway has proven this by creating a public space to engage in multiple winter activities as a community. The Westside Legacy Trail can increase those interpersonal interactions on a year round basis.”

Radium debris fire gets debated in provincial legislature

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff The debris fire at Radium Resort was extinguished on Sunday, February 28th, with Conservation Officers and Radium firefighters on hand to ensure all the remaining hot spots were dealt with. But the larger issue of how and why the fire began in the first place has continued to smoulder, and came to provincial attention last week, when it was the subject of debate in the provincial legislature in Victoria.

On Tuesday, March 1st Columbia River-Revelstoke MLA Norm Macdonald brought up the issue in the legislative chambers, saying his office was informed last March that Radium Resort had dumped waste material from the demolition of an old hotel near the 16th fairway of the golf course.

“The debris piles contained electrical wiring, insulation, drywall, nails, wood, concrete, rebar, carpet underlay and various plastics,” he said. “The alarm was raised by residents living near the waste. Concerns were raised that there would be leaching of chemicals into the ground and that the piles were a fire risk.”

He went on to say that, from what he understands, provincial Ministry of Environment staff ordered the resort to sort and properly dispose of the waste, but by last April no progress had been made. His office continued to pursue the issue. Still no progress had been made by December and the ministry issue a warning letter to the resort.

“On February (Tuesday) 23rd, residents watched billows of toxic smoke fill their valley as the debris that should have been immediately sorted and removed for proper landfill burned by a supposedly accidental fire. I can tell you nobody there thinks it was

accidental, but I know that’s subject to an investigation, right?” Mr. Macdonald told the legislature. “The air quality in the valley — and I was in the region then — was degraded as the fire smouldered throughout the weekend. So some residents — I think there were eight or nine — left their homes and stayed in other places, and one resident left and went to Alberta until the smouldering stopped. That was because, obviously, it was too unhealthy to stay there.”

Mr. Macdonald continued, giving voice to doubts raised by some valley residents as to the resort owner’s intentions to properly remove the debris.

“There’s a sense that, somehow, the resort feels they don’t have to follow the law.

The owners of the resort — it’s the Shaw family, right? So it’s a powerful family… it’s the Shaw from Shaw Cable, so in terms of how the community sees the law being applied, that’s part of what’s factored into what they see has happened there,” he said.

“This isn’t the only case. There’s a number of cases that we’re dealing with where the (Ministry of Environment) staff have not been able to force compliance and get a result, even though the ministry is aware of it, the minister’s office, in this case, is aware of it, and nothing seems to happen.”

Mr. Macdonald added that the pile of debris will remain on the course, even if the fire is out, and that this is still an issue.

“They (the resort) continue to be non-compliant after about a year. You have a community that has very little faith in the work that’s being done,” he said.

Submitted by Cpl. Grant Simpson Columbia Valley RCMP Columbia Valley RCMP responded to approximately 50 calls for service over the past week. Here are just a few of them: • On Tuesday, March 1st, a local woman called Columbia Valley RCMP to report that her daughter had nearly sent money to a scam artist posting housing rental ads on Craigslist. Her daughter had found a rental property on Craigslist in Westside Park and the renter asked her to send $300 up front before seeing the house or getting the key.

Fortunately, the woman warned her daughter against it. She advised police that the ad was listed under Kootenay Apartments/Housing for Rent and that they asked for their money in American dollars, which alarmed her. She also stated that she noticed some of the properties appeared on a legitimate rental website so she believes the fraudulent site is taking photos of properties from legitimate sites. This was also reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. Investigation is ongoing.

• On Wednesday, March 2nd, a 35-year-old male from Prince Rupert attended the Columbia Valley detachment to report that his vehicle had just gone off road on Panorama Drive and struck a fence post of the CP Rail compound.

The male advised that while driving his 1996 Volvo wagon, he’d lost control on the hill coming down Panorama Road.

This was attributed to compact snow/slush and icy roads from the overnight snowfall at approximately 8 a.m. The driver stated that due to the road conditions, his vehicle began to fishtail and he was unable to regain control. The driver’s acquaintance was driving in a vehicle behind him and stated that the road conditions were poor and slippery.

Police attended and obtained photographs of the damage.

Nothing suspicious was noted, but there was extensive damage to vehicle and fence post. The vehicle is believed to most likely be a write-off. The damage to the fence post of CP Rail was reported to CPR Police.

• On Thursday, March 3rd, police received a report of mischief that had occurred the past two nights at Panorama Mountain Resort. The complainant, a Banff male, reported that two of the Panorama shuttle buses had been

tampered with when they were parked in the upper parking lot area of Panorama Mountain Resort. He advised that several wheel nuts had been found to be loose on one of the vehicles and a gas cap had been left open on the other. There were no suspects or witnesses. However, the bus company had recently terminated an employee. The terminated employee does not live in Panorama and there was no evidence to suggest that he was responsible. Police recommended that the complainant advise Panorama Security of the incident and request that they patrol the area where the vehicles are parked overnight. Police also suggested the use of surveillance cameras if the issue continues to occur. The complainant was advised to contact police if there are any further occurrences.

• On Friday, March 4th at 10:33 a.m., Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of a vehicle rollover from a passerby, who advised that a green vehicle had rolled over on Toby Creek Road and that four occupants were out on the road and appeared to be uninjured. Police responded to the report and, once on scene, spoke with the driver of a 1993 Ford Explorer. The driver, a 24-year-old male originally from Norway, advised he was westbound up Toby Creek Road about five kilometres from Panorama when he lost control of the vehicle on ice and rolled it onto the driver’s side, causing extensive damage to the driver’s side of the vehicle. Neither the driver nor his passengers were injured. Police requested sanding trucks attend to sand the roadway as a number of vehicles had been observed sliding on the highway while members were dealing with the accident.

• On Sunday, March 6th at 8:06 a.m., Columbia Valley RCMP received a report that a truck was stolen sometime between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. and that it had been parked on 3rd Avenue beside the Lake Windermere condos in Invermere. The complainant and registered owner said that his truck was a blue 2015 Ford F150 and that in the box of the Ford was his black and green Yamaha dirt bike with Monster logos. There were no witnesses, suspects, or video surveillance.

Ethics of eating

A disturbing news item made headlines earlier this week when it was reported that Health Canada is planning to end mandatory one-year pesticide safety tests using dogs. It turns out that, for any food-related pesticides such as crop sprays, toxicity tests involving non-rodent animals have been going on since the 1980s.

In this particular testing, dogs (typically beagles) are specifically bred to be poisoned. The testing begins when the dogs are six months old, and continues for a year, during which time the beagles live in cages and are fed pesticides in their diet or are exposed to pesticides through inhalation every single day. After a year, they’re killed, dissected and examined so researchers can ascertain what the harmful effects of pesticides are on their organs. So, for compassionate people, it’s good news that, as part of its commitment to eliminate unnecessary animal testing, Health Canada has concluded the yearlong testing (which the United States stopped in 2007) is pointless because they glean all the necessary data they need from the ongoing mandatory 90-day testing, which is still an international requirement.

Given that March is Nutrition Month, it’s fitting that the topic of food-related animal testing is hitting the news. While the push for Nutrition Month is typically to educate the public about making healthy food choices that result in weight loss and improved health, the ethical treatment of animals used for human food consumption is a movement that’s also gaining speed.

In February, Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith introduced an animal rights private member’s bill in the House of Commons. Last week, cruelty charges were laid against a commercial farming operation in B.C. after secret footage revealed gruesome violence against cows.

But any legal headway will be slow to catch up to the torment hundreds of millions of animals endure in our modern food system where cruelty is endemic. Animals used for food should be given a life free of pain, and whether it’s the rampant abuse of factory farmed chickens, cows and pigs or the testing of pesticides on dogs, this abuse won’t stop until consumers demand it by using their dollars to support cruelty-free farming and food.

There is no free lunch

There is no free lunch. We are seeing demands for extended health care benefits and free post-secondary education. Doctors, nurses and college professors all receive significant and probably fair salaries or fees. We are seeing demand and support for more environmental and Aboriginal issue investigations. These could be with regards to ski resorts, forestry, missing persons or pipelines. Environmental evaluators, lawyers, politicians and Aboriginal leaders all demand and are getting paid big dollars. There are two questions.

The first is how much of these things do we need or want. The second question is how much of this cost is to be dumped on the taxpayer (you and me) and how much is to be borne by the recipients, protagonists and/or beneficiaries.

I will not venture an opinion but would ask for input from concerned citizens and voters. My point is that there is a cost and a bill to be paid by someone. There is no free lunch.

First: Do we have to change? Each day, global warming pollution traps as much heat energy as would be released by 400,000 Hiroshima-class atomic bombs. This trapped heat is leading to stronger storms and more extreme floods, he says. Second question: Can we change? We’ve already started. So then, the big question: Will we change?

Ms. Polak said that when an incident is considered a “minor” non-compliance (as the debris pile was before it began burning), Ministry of Environment staff must follow the appropriate guidelines, which consist of escalating action.

“Now we’ve been interrupted in the process by the fire. That might ultimately turn out to be a good thing, depending on what we find out in the investigation,” said Ms. Polak. “But nevertheless, I know even in my own riding we had an issue with a former drug lab in a neighbourhood. And we have to go through a certain process in terms of enforcement, in terms of trying to get the owners to do the right thing and then ultimately that can escalate into orders that the minister issues.”

Ms. Polak finished her response by assuring Mr. Macdonald that ministry staff were taking the fire quite seriously and will “move those things along as quickly as possible.”

In the meantime, a local resident near the fire has continued to express concern and frustration with the

whole situation.

Rick Fowler lives quite close to the golf course on Binnie Road (north of Dry Gulch, but south of Radium Hot Springs) and told The Pioneer that smoke from the fire was so bad that he and his wife had to leave their home for the night of Friday, February 26th and Saturday, February 27th.

“I got up at 2 a.m. and couldn’t breathe. It was fog-out conditions and you could see the haze in our house,” he said. “This is a health concern. It was black smoke and blue smoke. Everything was burning in that fire — garbage, old carpets, old toilets, rubber, wiring.

It can’t be good for us to breathe that in. Initially, I thought our home was on fire — it was that bad.”

The couple spent the two nights in the Super 8 Hotel in Radium, which the resort eventually paid for. Mr. Fowler said the smoke and odour were noticeably less pronounced during the days, but much worse at night, and added he suspects that’s the result of a cold air inversion.

“We’ve had our doors and windows (at the couple’s house) open for three days trying to get rid of the smoke and the smell. If we turn on the heater in the car, the smell is there. They’ve (the resort) said they’re going to help, but don’t know what that means,” he said. “Is there going to be some kind of compensation?”

The Conservation Officer Service’s investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.

Kindness and generosity of valley’s first-ever May Queen remembered

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff The valley has recently lost one of its most wellrespected and kindhearted residents.

Audrey Osterloh passed away on Tuesday, February 23rd and is being remembered by friends, family and the many others who knew her as a gentle yet adamantly independent woman, who always saw the good in those around her.

“I can’t remember her saying a harsh word to me,” said her son Gordon Osterloh. “And yet she still set you in a direction, not by nagging you, but by setting an example.”

“She never once in 40 years told me what to do,” added her son-in-law Peter McIsaac. “If she saw you were too busy and needed a break, she’d never say, ‘You Audrey Osterloh need to take time off.’ Instead, she would say ‘I’m looking after your kids next weekend’.”

“People always said she was gracious. She was a gentle, quiet friend. But although she was quiet, she wasn’t really shy. She was always chatting to people who sat next to her, on airplanes for instance, even if they

A unique fusion of classical and jazz music will come together in the Columbia Valley thanks to a Toronto-based duo that is touring in B.C. to share their sound with others.

Pianist Chris Donnelly and clarinetist Kornel Wolak will be performing at the Christ Church Trinity at 8 p.m. on Monday, March 21st in a show hosted by CV Arts.

“We play mostly classical music,” explained Mr. Donnelly, 23. “I’m also a trained jazz musician and that’s mostly what I do, but I know a lot about classical music, so I can play classical music, but if you know anything about classical music and jazz music, you’ll know that they don’t always get along, but we make it get along and we put on an entertaining show and communicate with the audience.”

The musical hybrid features both genres in a flattering way while managing to engage an audience in jokes and conversations.

“We make fun of each other, but it’s also a very spontaneous show, which is probably more part of the jazz thing as far as how we speak and interact with others,” said Mr. Donnelly.

It will be the first time this act visits the Columbia Valley.

“It’s definitely my first time (playing) in Invermere,” said Mr. Donnelly. “B.C. has a very strong live performance market — one of the largest ones in the country — and because it’s strong, a lot of the towns in B.C. are a network, so when a community like Invermere wants an artist from Toronto, it’s best for these

communities to group together to offer them multiple shows. There are a few of these in B.C. and my Invermere performance is part of a small little tour that also includes Oliver, Vernon and Kaslo.”

Mr. Donnelly has an agent to help book tours and connect the destinations he books with multiple shows.

“It’s like a marketplace for the performing arts,” said Mr. Donnelly. “It’s nice to have that network and know that communities like Invermere are communicating with other communities and joining together to help bring some performing arts into the town.”

The duo is eager to perform in B.C. and to develop a performing arts network across Canada.

“We’ve been working together since 2011,” said Mr. Donnelly, adding that an eastern touring organization known as Debut Atlantic had declined requests from both men as solo acts but then encouraged them to develop a duo program.

“We had both submitted a package… to Debut Atlantic and they got back to both of us stating what we were doing individually wasn’t right for the market, but that they noticed what we were doing in Toronto could be put together for something that’s classically influenced with jazz music in it as well… and that’s what we did.”

After developing their new act, the duo toured eastern Canada in 2011 and found it was a “big success.”

“Since then, we’ve just been moving west,” concluded Mr. Donnelly with a chuckle.

Yuk Yuk’s Matt Breslin’s Comedy On Tour show will be presenting opening act Matt Foster and featuring headlining stand-up comedian Sweet Derek at the Horsethief Creek Pub and Eatery at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 19th.

“I’ve seen Derek perform before and he’s awesome,” said Mike Gray, owner at Horsethief Creek Pub. “Both of them are touring… it was an event that we thought would be fun to do, so we’re going to see how the response is and possibly do it all summer, but for now, we’re just doing the one show.”

The special event aims to showcase dark insightful comedy, anecdotes, entertainment and self-deprecating humour.

In addition, the prime rib supper, which happens to be on special on the third Saturday of ev-

ery month, will also be on the menu during the live show.

However, the goal is to boost the community’s spirit and gauge if there’s enough interest to run regular comedy shows during the busy summer season.

“We think it’s so fun to have events going on locally and to not have to travel so far for events that we’re trying to have regular events like live music (every Monday) and karaoke, plus bring in new stuff from time to time to have some bigger events that the locals have expressed interest in,” said Mr. Gray, while noting the burlesque show held around Halloween was wildly popular and is expected to return to Radium Hot Springs on April 23rd.

“But this is the first time we’ve had comedy,” said Mr. Gray about the upcoming stand-up comedy night. “We’re just going to see what the response is and if people love it and are excited for it, then we’ll do it every week all summer long.”

Tickets to the comedy show will be $10 in advance or $12 at the door.

Since it is a Leap Year and we have just passed the official leap day, I decided to talk about leaping. People will leap into almost anything. It is human nature; well, for some of us at least. Since we tend to leap, why not a leap of faith?

The definition of faith is: complete trust or confidence in someone or something.

Faith is a very powerful thing. Can you imagine having complete trust or confidence that you were going to enjoy a wonderful and healthy life, along with financial freedom? Wouldn’t having faith in yourself and your thoughts be a monumental advantage? This kind of thought would create a reality that many of us would have.

How the Slow Food movement is changing the world Submitted by Lara McCormack Slow Food Columbia Valley From April 6th to 10th, the Columbia Valley is hosting the Slow Food National Summit. This is a huge boost for our valley as we have an opportunity to educate, show off and focus on our local food system and the culinary culture of our area to visiting delegates, but more importantly, to bring Slow Food to light in a local sense.

So, let’s set the record straight here: Slow Food is not about slow cooking! Slow Food is about good, clean and fair food for all and taking the time to enjoy everything that comes with delicious food.

Carlo Petrini began the Slow Food organization almost 30 years ago in his native Italy as an engaged fight for food justice and has since expanded to over 160 countries with millions of members, creating a movement that calls for a powerful force for change.

Slow Food is revolutionizing the way food is grown, distributed and eaten. Food is seen as an avenue towards freedom because if people can feed themselves, they can be free. In other words, if people can regain control over their food supply — how it is produced, by whom, and how it is distributed — then that can lead to a greater empowerment in all channels of life.

This Summit’s theme is “Feeding the Future” and is something we should all be

thinking about in times of global warming, industrialization of food, economic disarray and political upheavals. Finding gut health in fermented foods Natural Health

By Dr. Mike Baker Pioneer Columnist What do you think of when you hear the word “fermented”? Orange juice that’s been in the fridge for too long? The fact is that many cultures have a history of fermenting food, and have a signature fermented dish like Korean Kimchi, Eastern European Sauerkraut, or Icelandic Hákarl (fermented shark). There are numerous reasons for fermenting foodstuffs, and though initially fermentation was used for food preservation, there are many dietary benefits conveyed, such as increased nutrient absorption, better digestion, and improved taste.

Fermented foods remain popular today because of their many health benefits and tasty flavours. Fermented foods are known to provide a good source of vitamins, minerals and improve our digestive systems with good bacteria/probiotics. Fermented foods enhance the flavour of otherwise bitter or tasteless foods (i.e. cocoa beans are bitter until fermented and we know what great tasting things cocoa can turn into: chocolate!).

Fermented foods use bacteria or yeasts to produce carbon dioxide (the bubbles) and alcohol (in the case of beer, wine, cider, spirits) or lactic acid (like in yogurt and sauerkraut). The gases and chemicals produced by the good bacteria thwart bad bacteria from growing, preventing these foods from rotting or going rancid. During this fermentation process, the bacteria and yeasts produce vitamins and amino acids essential to our good health.

As the plant material breaks down during fermentation, nutrients, vitamins and minerals are more accessible to our digestive tracts when we eat them.

Generally, the only downside of fermented foods is that many of them are pasteurized prior to being sold.

Pasteurization is the process of quickly heating food in order to destroy harmful bacteria. During pasteurization, however, good bacteria are killed as well, along with the destruction of many of the vitamins and amino acids produced during fermentation. To get the most out of fermented foods, look for unpasteurized (raw) fermented products typically found in the refrigerated section of the grocery or health food store. A better alternative is to make your own! As an example, homemade sauerkraut is relatively easy to do and many great recipes can be found online.

When first eating fermented foods, it is important to start with smaller portions and gradually increase the amount over a few days to weeks. As the bacteria in your

Week 5: Make it Stick — Learn doable strategies to make your changes stick. Be prepared with nourishing grab ‘n’ go foods, like yogurt, nuts and fruit.

YOUR MONEY Indexing flaws

It’s easy to see why investing in mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that track major market indexes have grown so much in popularity. Both have low fees and have outperformed the average active manager in recent years. In the United States alone, index funds and ETFs were the recipients of nearly 20 per cent of every dollar invested in the market during 2015.

This growth however, has created some major concerns with index funds that investors should be aware of.

Corporate governance In Canada, ETFs show up as major shareholders of almost every large company on the TSX, and in the United States, as much as 20 per cent of the outstanding shares of nearly every publically traded company is owned by an ETF or index fund.

It stands to reason then that as ETF/index fund ownership grows as a percentage of shares outstanding, the voting power of ETF/index fund managers will increase.

The nature of index products is to replicate a particular index as closely as possible, not to generate positive returns. Therefore, ETF/index fund managers are not compensated for investment performance or corporate governance. Instead, index managers are compensated for how closely they track the index and how low their fees are.

This quest for asset growth through conformation and fee compression make ETFs/index funds laser focused on

continued cost control rather than investing in building high quality corporate governance operations capable of overseeing the companies in which they invest.

Why is this a problem?

Shareholders make publically traded corporations responsible for their actions. They have the power to demand change, fairness and environmental responsibility, among other things. If the largest shareholders of mega corporations are ETFs/index funds without the resources, mandate or desire to hold corporations accountable, this lack of oversight might actually encourage corporate underperformance. After all, if the majority of shareholders are not being paid to care about matters like executive compensation or environmental stewardship, conditions can unravel pretty quickly. This general economic discontent which, left unchecked, could potentially erode North American companies’ corporate standards and global competitiveness.

Courts have often deemed shareholders to be in control of a corporation with as little as 20 per cent ownership of a company. If asset inflows to index products continue, it will not be long before multiple ETFs/index funds own controlling interests in corporate Canada and America.

Index bubbles and crashes Certain index funds, such as those tracking the S&P 500, often receive, or lose, a disproportionate amount of

capital. This disproportionate flow of capital can drive the stock prices of the index up or down, regardless of how well companies are doing.

The most popular index funds are market-cap weighted. This means as a stock price rises, its weighting in the index increases and the ETF/index fund is required to buy more of the company. It also means that when a stock’s price decreases, the ETF/Index fund must sell more of the stock. This is in stark contrast to the old adage of buying low and selling high. This backwards phenomenon happens because the managers are not paid to do otherwise.

Buying high can risk moving stock prices into overvaluation, and in extreme cases, bubble territory. If this happens, no matter what, ETF/index funds must always chase a price higher. This could have the effect of reducing index products’ long-term rates of return compared to actively managed investments. This juncture would likely cause investor sentiment to turn, spiking large outflows from ETF/index funds, which will further reduce investor interest and increase capital outflows.

Final thoughts When it comes to ETFs and index funds, potential problems are more about what they’re not doing than what they are. They aren’t selecting securities based on fundamentals. They don’t care about keeping corporations in line. They care about having a cheap product and that’s what investors are getting.

Watching for spring constellations

watched as two faint satellites drifted north through Orion and two meteors crossed. Closer to Earth, eastbound planes flickered overhead while below a train’s headlight wove along the lake’s dark shore. Many subtleties, and surprises — a reminder that spring and spring constellations are approaching.

Recently, at late dusk, a pair of herons back for the season appeared very close overhead, then turned and arced right over me, as if were wanting one to say that they, too, are part of special evenings here.

Metis kitchen party The Columbia Valley Metis Association (CVMA) hosted a kitchen party at David Thompson Secondary School (DTSS) between 6 and 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2nd. Roughly 75 people attended the gathering from Invermere, Golden, Kimberley and Alberta for a meal of stew and bannock; while celebrating Spring Hawe’s birthday. Grades 11 and 12 students, as well as postgrads, from Golden Secondary School attended the celebration with their teacher Dana Setter; Ev McGilvery and Mrs. Mitchell enjoyed the dancing; fiddler Daniel Gervais performed live music and led a jig lesson to help the gathering dance and play the spoons.

Shelstrom, Joan Mary (nee Harris) February 20th, 1920 March 3rd, 2016 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our wonderful Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Great-Great-Grandmother, Aunt and friend to many.

Predeceased by her loving Husband Charlie, Son Vernon, Sons-in-law Frank Stark, Norm Kubbernus, and Al Knorr and Great-Grandson Steven, as well as Sister Sheila, and Brothers Leonard, Wallace and Jack. Survived by Sister Francis Folden, and Children Marlene Kubbernus, Inez Stark, Mel (Anita), Elaine (Chris), 13 Grandchildren, 27 Great-Grandchildren, 3 Great-Great-Grandchildren and 2 Great-Great-Granddaughters on the way.

Joan was an inspiration to us all. She was no stranger to hard work, an amazing cook who made everyone feel welcome in her home. She selflessly dedicated her life to her family and community. At 96 years young she remained an executive member of Edgewater/Radium Hospital Auxiliary, and Anglican-United Church Guild, as well as a life member of The Edgewater Seniors. Joan had a great sense of humour, a shining example of love and kindness and was living proof that size is not determinitive of strength.

A Celebration of Joan’s Life will be held at All Saints Church in Edgewater, Saturday March 12th at 3 p.m. Tea to follow at The Edgewater Community Hall.

Helen passed away at her home in Radium Hot Springs, on the morning of February 28th, after a long battle with cancer.

Helen is survived by her loving husband - Tom Elliott, daughters - Myrna, Lillian, Karen, and Lisa. Her many grand and great-grandchildren and their families. And of course, her little dog Chico.

Helen’s family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Walsh and Dr. Gooch, her Home Support Nurses - Maxine, Carol, and Jessie, and her Home Support Aides - Dina and Shawnee, and especially Gwen who really took care of us all. Thank you to all the other doctors, nurses, and aides who have helped during Helen’s long illness. Special thanks to the wonderful people at Pharmasave for their help in keeping us sorted and sane when dealing with all the different medications and the Chisel Peak Medical Clinic ladies for always being helpful and cheerful during our visits. Special thanks to Radium First Responders and the Invermere Ambulance crews.

Recipe Of The Week SLOW COOKER RIBS 3 lbs Baby Back Pork Ribs 2 cups BBQ Sauce ¼ cup Brown Sugar 4 tbsp Cider Vinegar Salt and Pepper

3 tsp Oregano 1 tsp Worcestershire Sauce 1 tbsp Cayenne Pepper 1 tbsp Chili Powder

Combine BBQ sauce, sugar, vinegar, oregano, Worcestershire sauce, cayenne pepper and chili powder in a small bowl.

Cut the ribs into smaller sections and season with salt and pepper.

Place ribs in slow cooker; cover with sauce.

Cook on low for 8 hours or high for 4 hours.

When done remove and serve with sauce.

Bantam Rockies head to provincials, Rockies Junior B wrap up season The Bantam Rockies won the East Kootenay league banner championships in Cranbrook on February 28th after being undefeated in five straight games. Fest full of flavour The 3rd Annual Invermere Coffee Fest was another aromatic adventure for coffee and tea aficionados. The touch of Christ

By Father Gabriel St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Christ’s touch is always incredible. He touched people with warmth.

By his timely touch, he transformed people and restored them to their wholeness. He touched the blind man and blessed him, not only with physical sight, but also with inner vision.

He touched the pyre and called out the dead man to life. He touched the children and allowed them to be on his lap and gave them a great sense of confidence and belonging.

He also gave us the wonderful teaching: “The kingdom of heaven belongs to those who are like little children.” He touched the sick people and gave them health and comfort. He touched Zacchaeus and gave him a new perspective for his life; he transformed him to be a gentle and caring human being. He touched the fishermen like Peter, John and James and made them stalwarts and pillars of his mandate, the Gospel.

He allowed a woman to touch his feet to oil them and wipe them with her hair. By doing so, she felt refreshed in her heart and mind.

Jesus also touched the feet of his 12 disciples and helped them to be conscious of their role as “servants of good will” and transformed them to be jewels in human history.

The gentle touch of Christ is more powerful even today than most of our modern weapons. The modern weapons can only cause a lot of havoc in human history, whereas the gentle touch of Christ has the mighty power to restore everything to its original state of life and health. Jesus’ touch is neither a punitive touch nor a legalistic touch.

His touch is loaded with warmth, love, mercy and

compassion. It is a practical touch of comfort and consolation as that of a mother for a burdened child. It’s a healing touch as that of the physician, which brings a lot of joy and happiness to the patient. His steadfast love and care is shared even with those who persecute him every day, in the millions and millions of refugees and those who close their doors to them.

Even today Christ prays “Father forgive them, for they know not what they are doing” and pleads with his heavenly Father to forgive those who cause unimaginable pain to human life and existence.

Even when he underwent that excruciating suffering and pain on the road of his life, he never inflicted pain on anyone. Rather, he touched them profoundly with his merciful gaze and brought them to justice.

In our modern life, parents and grandparents touch their young ones every day at least for a brief time to help them to grow up to their maturity, hoping that they will also reciprocate this caring touch to their young ones in the future. By these sensitive gestures, they express their love and affection.

Health care providers handle several people every day, touching and healing those afflicted with ailments, especially bandaging those with broken parts of their bodies like the Good Samaritan of the Gospel.

The L’Arche movement of Jean Vanier is worth pondering as they do a fantastic job of committing themselves to the care of the physically and mentally challenged. Indeed, it is a blessing to have people who work with autism.

They bring the heavenly blessings to those who care for them by their amazing spirit of caring.

Human society is in need of our timely caring touch. Pope Francis, during his international tours, touches and kisses babies and people with warmth and love. By these gentle gestures, he is sending a powerful message that we need to be closer to our humankind with our love and care.

People long for our compassionate touch. We can bring great joy through our timely touch if we are sensitive to the needs of our people around us. May God help us in this initiative with the spirit of Christ.

He said that the Ford was Alberta registered under his name but that he was unable to provide the licence plate or VIN numbers for the Ford or the Yamaha. Police queries of the complainant were unable to determine that he was the registered owner of the Ford. He explained that all of the papers for the Ford were inside it. The complainant said that he does not have any ownership or registration papers for the Yamaha either.

As a result, the complainant will now be required to provide police with the licence plate number and VIN in order to follow up with their investigation.
