Debris fire burning at Radium Resort causes furor

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff A pile of construction debris at Radium Resort caught fire early last week, sending smoke and odour through Radium Hot Springs and sparking a wave of social media attention.

“On Monday, February 22nd at the Radium Course, two brush piles were being burned as part of our annual clean up. All necessary approvals, permits and notifications were in place. Unfortunately, the fire spread to materials from the recent demolition of the Radium Resort Hotel,” Radium Resort Limited Partnership managing director Gary Goetsch told The Pioneer on Friday, February 26th. “Over the past four days, heavy equipment and water trucks have been working to extinguish the residual fire. The fire and resulting smoke will be eliminated soon.”

Ministry of Environment spokesperson David Karn confirmed late on Sunday, February 28th that the ministry was aware of the burning waste debris pile, noting the ministry had ordered the resort to extinguish the fire

on Wednesday, February 24th.

Local conservation officers attended the scene after being notified of the incident early on February 24th, Conservation Office Sergeant Lawrence Umsonst told The Pioneer on Thursday, February 25th.

“We have been on site investigating since that time,” said Mr. Umsonst, adding that the Ministry of Environment had previously advised the resort that the pile of demolition waste, which had been sitting on the property for about a year, was in violation of the provincial Environment Management Act. “This type of waste should be disposed of at an authorized waste facility,” he said. “That wasn’t done and now it has caught fire.”

The Pioneer obtained a Ministry of Environment warning letter sent to Radium Resort owners on December 17th, 2015, explaining that the Conservation Office Service and the ministry’s environmental protection division had been notified by public complaint in February 2015 that “demolish (demolition) waste originating from the Radium Resort was being prepared for burial on the resort property. Both the Conservation

Officer Service and the environmental protection division had advised Mr. Steve Kuffler from Radium Resort that the demolition waste material is considered municipal waste and must be disposed at an authorized solid waste disposal facility.”

The December 17th letter stated that there will not be legal charges, but that there could be an “escalating response” if the pile was not dealt with. In conclusion, the letter requested that the resort owners “immediately implement the necessary actions to address the unauthorized discharge” and notify the ministry within 30 days of when corrective measures were taken.

The Conservation Office Service will continue its investigation into the storage of the waste and the ignition of the fire, said Mr. Umsonst, adding that, although he was not certain what type of materials were burning in the fire, they are “prohibited materials that are not allowed to be burned.”

Mr. Umsonst said the fire was “fairly large” and said rough estimates pegged its size at 45 metres long, 25 metres wide and 1.5 metres deep.

Scams Couple of new scams being reported.

Someone identifying themselves as being from the Immigration Office wants you to know that you are in big trouble and may be deported from the country. The intended victim receiving the call was Canadian. The caller advises that for a sum of money they can work with the Canadian Embassy and you can avoid being deported. People are catching on to the Canada Revenue scam so it looks like the scammers have moved on to Immigration.

Another fellow reported contacting a number for BC Medical and was transferred to another number. The male then received a text stating that he now owes money for the transfer. BC Med and Telus were contacted and are looking into this as they have no idea why such a text was sent.

• On Friday, February 26th, police were called to assist the ambulance at a construction accident involving a 19-year-old male from the valley who fell from a second story and was seriously injured. Quick action by his fellow construction workers and first responders got the male to the hospital where he was stabilized and then flown out.

Worksafe BC was notified and will be investigating.

• On Friday, February 26th at 4:19 p.m., as a result of a disturbance complaint in front of Lambert-Kipp Pharmacy, a 64-year-old male from Radium was arrested for causing a disturbance and being drunk in public. The male was given a court date to answer to the charge of causing a disturbance.

• On Friday, February 26th at 9:53 p.m., police attended to a break and enter complaint in the 6000 block of

Today/Tomorrow Today, I wake up the leader of men and women, in command of a detachment with all the responsibilities that come with the heavy burden of being responsible and accountable to the community I serve. Tomorrow, I wake up third in the hierarchy of three. Bev, Taz (the dog) and me. My first priority is to reclaim my easy boy chair in Golden that Taz has taken over for the last seven years, assert myself as second in command and reclaim my rightful place. Steve with The Pioneer met with me for an exit interview (see page 23) so I will not repeat myself here. I will have my final say on April 16th. I appreciate all the support I have received from the people I served here in the valley as well as Golden. Now my challenge is to look at Bev’s To Do list or go fishing. Hmmm.

No sudden moves please (the last story) Last week, I had a friend attend to the back parking lot where we park our police vehicles. This trusted friend was attending a meeting with myself and Cpl. Grant Simpson in Golden. We were waiting for Grant to come out to the back parking lot, but he was dragging his butt. It was urgent that I depart while our friend jumps in with Grant in the unmarked Tahoe. The police vehicle I would be driving was to be left in Golden and I realized the shotgun was still left in the police car. I removed it from the locking device, emptied the shotgun and handed it to my friend, instructing him to give it to Grant as I have to leave now.

SAR responds to two incidents

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff Avalanche risk conditions in the backcountry around the Columbia Valley are higher than normal, just as they are around Golden, which has seen a spate of avalanche-related fatalities and injuries in the past few weeks.

But the sheer number of backcountry users in the Golden area is much higher than in the Columbia Valley, and that has so far translated into no avalanche injuries or deaths here during the same period of time, according to Columbia Valley Search and Rescue Society vice president Steve Talsma.

“Overall, we have a similar snowpack to Golden, although they have received more snowfall. There are no backcountry lodges around here and there are a lot more backcountry snowmobilers around Golden, so that does factor into the number of incidents up there,” said Mr. Talsma.

On Saturday, February 20th a Calgary man was killed and a Winnipeg man taken to hospital after they triggered an avalanche while snowmobiling with two other people in the backcountry near Golden. The next day a Canmore man and Calgary woman were each flown to hospital (the man in critical condition) and four more people were treated for injuries after their group of 13 backcountry skiers triggered another avalanche near Golden. The incidents came despite Avalanche Canada issuing a special public avalanche warning for recreational backcountry users from Friday, February 19th through to Monday, February 22nd, which applied to much of the backcountry in the Kootenay Region.

“Recent new snow and wind have deposited up to a metre of new snow across these regions that overlays a weak layer,” said Avalanche Canada’s forecasting program supervisor James Floyer in a press release announcing the public warning, adding that “we’ve seen this layer fail a number of times over the past few days,” and later saying “we could be seeing some large and dangerous avalanches.”

After the weekend, Avalanche Canada forecasting supervisor Ilya Storm told media the organization had heard of several more near misses.

Although the Columbia Valley Search and Rescue crew hasn’t been dealing with avalanche rescues to the same degree as Golden, the team has had a busy winter (comparable with the past few winters) and made two rescues last weekend.

On Saturday, January 27th, search and rescue team members airlifted an injured snowmobiler (rescuers suspect the man had broken bones, possibly his femur, and a dislocated hip) out of the Forster Creek area, said Mr. Talsma, adding the man and the friends he was with had tried to self-rescue by driving out and had not immediately sent a signal with their rescue beacon, which delayed the onset of the rescue efforts.

“Delaying can make injuries worse and rescue ef-

forts longer and tougher,” he said. “A helicopter is a great tool, but with limited daylight in winter, we’d rather go out and deal with a call as soon as possible.”

The other rescue last weekend was a lost skier who headed out-of-bounds at Panorama Mountain Resort and got caught in an area aptly named Hopeful Creek.

“There are usually a few of those each year,” said Mr. Talsma. “People think it looks good to ski and that they will pop back out at the base of the ski hill. But the conditions in there are not good and it does not come back out anywhere. This particular skier got stuck right down in the creek bottom, which is not a fun place to be. It’s quite overgrown and filled with downed trees.”

Unlike the Forster Creek snowmobiler, who was equipped with proper avalanche gear and an emergency beacon, the lost skier was unprepared — a common trend, according to Mr. Talsma.

“There is a difference in rescuing those who are prepared and those that are not prepared” he said. “It usually happens in out-of-bounds ski resort situations that those being rescued do not have the proper gear. And that puts our people and ski patrol helping out at risk.”

Those spots — Forster Creek and Hopeful Creek (and other just out-of-bounds areas near Panorama) — are the “major areas in winter” and account for the bulk of Columbia Valley Search and Rescue’s winter calls, said Mr. Talsma, adding that summer rescue work is more evenly scattered throughout the valley backcountry.

During the past few years, Forster Creek (which can have as many as 100 snowmobilers on a typical winter weekend) has seen roughly four or five Columbia Valley Search and Rescue operations each winter, while out-ofbound skiers at Panorama result in about five or six such operations each winter, according to Mr. Talsma.

“It’s usually been two (rescue operations) a month, or about 20-something (rescues) a year. That’s just over the last few years, which have been about double what the historical average has been. It’s been a dramatic increase,” he said. “Part of that is communications. There are more satellites, more satellite phones, more cell phones and more emergency beacons being used in the backcountry, which allows more people to call for help when they need it.”

The rising number of search and rescue operations is a trend among many of the 80 search and rescue crews at work in B.C., according to Mr. Talsma.

“It’s become more of an essential service, but we don’t have the funding. We (Columbia Valley Search and Rescue) ideally need more than $100,000 a year to operate and almost all of that comes through fundraising,” he said. “We spent as much or more time last year looking for funding than we did training or out on the calls. That’s not what we want to be doing.”

Mr. Talsma advised those heading into the local backcountry to be prepared, to understand the avalanche conditions and risks and to modify their recreation accordingly.

Calling for change

In 1973, the Temporary Foreign Worker Program was established to allow employers to hire highly skilled workers. By all accounts, it was highly successful and represented a path to citizenship for those immigrating. In 2002, a “low skilled workers” category was added. This category of workers now makes up most of the foreign workforce. It was revised again in 2013, with the governing Conservatives making it more difficult and expensive ($1,000 per employee, up from $275) for companies to hire foreigners. The accelerated application process was scrapped. In addition, an unemployment ceiling of 6 per cent was set for regions, thus making the program unavailable for communities like ours (currently the East Kootenay region has an unemployment rate of 7.9 per cent).

Former Employment Minister Jason Kenney had it right when he stated definitively that Canadian workers should get the first crack at available jobs. What was never addressed were communities like ours that go through huge seasonal shifts in employment and the fact that there are not enough Canadians to fill every position that opens up during our peak seasons.

It was heartening to hear MaryAnn Mihychuk, the Minister for Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, say that she will be asking a parliamentary committee to review the program and provide proposals to fix it. Liberal MPs have weighed in, saying the current restrictions hurt seasonal businesses and the service sector. They are also on record stating that the program is a credible pathway to citizenship.

So what can be done locally to help drive the changes that are needed? For starters, we need to let MP Wayne Stetski know that he must champion changes to the TFW program and work with members of the governing Liberals to facilitate these changes. He must meet with local business owners and members of the local Chambers and work on their behalf by taking their suggestions back to Ottawa for consideration. Changes to the program will benefit many local businesses and will allow our MP to put one in his “personal win” column come election time.

Decrepit shack hauled to shore

By Nicole Trigg Pioneer Staff A burnt ice fishing shack, halfsunk into the ice, brought a group of concerned citizens together last Friday, who went to great efforts to remove it from the lake and drag it to the shore.

The abandoned shack, blackened and tilted to one side, had become the subject of widespread public criticism as its owners were clearly not caring to remove it prior to the lake thawing. On Friday, February 26th, a handful of Windermere residents decided to do something about it.

More penalties for drunk drivers

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff The provincial government has brought in new, harsher regulations for driving under the influence of alcohol, but so far the new penalties have not discouraged what the local RCMP detachment commander says is a real problem in the Upper Columbia Valley.

“It (drinking and driving) certainly is an issue here,” said retiring Columbia Valley RCMP Staff Sergeant Marko Shehovac. “Even with these new rules, people still don’t get the message. We’re doing a lot of road side licence suspension with the new approver screening devices (ASD) breathalyzers.”

Staff Sgt. Shehovac said the local RCMP detachment makes at least 50 such suspensions here in the valley each year, which works out to about one each week.

“And that number would certainly be a lot higher if the officers had more time to focus on it,” he said.

Under the new regulations, drivers caught operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol or drugs can be required to participate in mandatory remedial programs designed to prevent such behaviour

from reoccurring.

These programs include the Responsible Driver Program (RDP), which focuses on education and counselling, and the Ignition Interlock Program (IIP), for which a device is installed in the vehicle to prevent drivers from driving if they have consumed alcohol. The new rules come as part of the provincial government’s push to make B.C.’s roads the safest on the continent by 2020.

“Let me be clear. If you are caught drinking and driving and therefore putting your life and the lives of others at risk, it will cost you. Driving while affected by alcohol or drugs is reckless and selfish behaviour for which this province has no tolerance,” said provincial Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General Mike Morris in a press release on the matter.

In 2014, drinking and driving contributed to the death of 61 people on B.C. roads, according to the press release.

The new regulations apply to drivers caught driving while affected by drugs or alcohol who accumulate between six and 16 remedial program points within five years. The press release said that research in areas that have implemented Ignition Interlock Program (IIP) devices shows a 90 per cent reduction in repeat drinking and driving while the device is installed.

Alternative approach offered to breast cancer screenings

By Breanne Massey Pioneer Staff A new way to screen for breast cancer has become a popular alternative for some women because it doesn’t expose patients to radiation, but it still has the ability to detect abnormalities and hormonal imbalances early on.

Kelowna-based Thermography Clinic Inc. spokesperson Debbie Lewis will be offering non-invasive, radiationfree breast thermography appointments to women in the Columbia Valley at a mobile clinic hosted by Renaissance Wellness Centre in Invermere on Saturday, March 12th.

Thermography measures temperatures in the breast, which can highlight areas that have increased blood flow. Often finding an area with increased blood flow indicates cancerous findings.

“Breast thermography is a technique useful for detecting early changes to breast tissue that may not be detected on a mammogram,” said Invermere-based naturopathic doctor Mike Baker who operates out of Renaissance Wellness Centre. “For all females (and males too) of nearly any age, and especially those with a family medical history of breast cancer, this is a great preventative tool.

Science fair open to community spectators

By Breanne Massey Pioneer Staff The burning desire to ask questions about science has motivated Grade 8 and 9 students at David Thompson Secondary School (DTSS) to conduct research and present their findings this school year.

The first-ever DTSS student-led science fair on Thursday, March 10th between 7 and 9 p.m. will be open to the public to attend and free of charge.

The fair will be taking place in the library and cafeteria of the school.

“I’m hoping to make it an annual event,” said Tessa Bartz, DTSS science teacher and event organizer. “There’s a new curriculum coming into the school system and it really encourages student-led inquiries, which basically means that students ask their own questions about what they’re interested in learning and then work on finding out the answers.

In science, how you look for answers to questions is by doing experiments so with the new curriculum coming in, it just made sense to get the kids working on their own science fair projects (because) I think it’s more fun to work towards a big event rather than just doing the project and not presenting it.”

She explained the new curriculum has been created for students from kindergarten up to Grade 9.

“This is the transition year, so teachers can choose to either use the new curriculum or not,” said Ms. Bartz, noting she opted to utilize the new teaching resources and material during this school year.

“Then, next year, it’s fully implemented so all of the K-9 classes will be on the new curriculum.”

The science fair assignment was given out to 60 Grade 8 and 9 students this semester.

When asked why Ms. Bartz extended an invitation to the science fair to the Columbia Valley community, she replied: “For the community, themselves, it’s a neat opportunity to see what our high-schoolers are capable of and also there’s quite a wide variety of topics to take in so there’s some neat stuff and you might actually learn something. For the benefit of the kids, having members of the public come in, it shows the kids that their work is valued and that science is important to people — more than just their teachers.”

Ms. Bartz opted to use a science fair to give students an opportunity to have some fun while showcasing individualized, hands-on experiments. She believes the new curriculum was well-received by students at the high school.

“Some of them have picked ideas that are a little bit over their heads,” she said. “There’s been some really ambitious projects so it’s been a little bit chaotic and a little bit of a gong show at times, but ultimately, the fact that they get to do what they want to do has really made them enthusiastic about it.”

In fact, some of the Grade 11 students will be volunteering to supervise and a few Grade 12 students will be helping judge the projects at the end of the day-long fair.

Some of the projects have even pushed the boundaries at DTSS. “I had a kid who wanted to test flammable substances, so she basically lit different things on fire and investigated how they burned — that’s pretty cool,” said Ms. Bartz. “We have crystal growing projects; I have an earthworm farm in our classroom. Some of the kids tested various things to do with the earthworms so there’s a really good variety of the projects. Ultimately, the kids have been really into it since they get to choose what they want to do.”

The Fairmont ski slopes are the place to be on Saturday, March 5th when the Fairmont Hot Springs Resort Ski Area hosts the 2nd Annual Charity Ski Day. Presented by the resort in partnership with the Columbia Valley Pioneer, Charity Ski Day is a true community event that not only offers families and individuals in the valley a huge discount on ski passes for the day, but all proceeds raised from the sales of ski passes and Snow School programming get donated to a very worthy cause — literacy programming for the Invermere Public Library.

‘Brussels skrouts’ and children’s eating habits Family Ties

By Lynsey Burke Pioneer Columnist Yesterday, child one returned home from the grocery store with Dad and was bounding with the unmistakable exuberance that usually signifies a victory in the treat department.

“Mom, we bought a special treat,” he tells me with raised eyebrows and a sideways nod – a tactical demeanour that he often utilizes when trying to convince us of something. Oh. here we go.

“What sort of persuasion took place at the store?” says I. He climbs up onto the stool, wide-eyed and excited to uncover a suspenseful and “brace yourself” sort of goodie-reveal.

He then pulls out a bag… full of brussels sprouts.

For hours after the initial reveal he asked, incessantly, to be allowed to eat the “brussels skrouts.” It was pure agony to wait until dinnertime for these supposed tasty leafy greens to be served, a new and unchartered veggie for him.

As a confession: no vegetable on this green Earth spurs this sort of enthusiasm with our three-and-a-halfyear-old grazer. Using our parental investigative skills,

we suspect that the excitement over these mini cabbages came from a certain favourite show among his age group — Paw Patrol.

The episode discusses things that you may not like, or that you have a fear of. They discover, through facing fears and trying new things, that they aren’t nearly as scary or off-putting as they had initially thought.

What a great moral, well done — that’s a big score for the parent-approved cartoon as those “skrouts” went down in mass portions.

While we don’t have a household of picky eaters, the challenge is getting them to sit still and focus on the act of eating. I wish to successfully raise adventurous and health conscious eaters. After all, our body is our temple…

Our child-noshing tactics sometimes get chewed up and spat back out, while other times it’s down the hatch and, sometimes, it feels like a frenzied food fight, yet we continue soldier on with these strategies: I have kitchen helpers: Since a wee age, I’ve had measurers, mixers, mess makers and little sous chefs in the kitchen. The involvement has helped to create an understanding of ingredients and the process in general.

We make one meal: What mom (or dad) is making is what’s on the menu. There are no individualized orders.

You must try one bite: Child two doesn’t yet abide by this rule, as she isn’t quite at the rule abiding age.

Child one will always give it a go (unless it’s the poison that is tomatoes).

Start with smaller portions: You can always come back for more, but with smaller portions they feel like they’ve succeeded!

Shamefully bribe with dessert: I don’t even believe in this tactic, but admittedly, we use it on the regular…

Don’t drink your dinner: You may have water or milk. Mom and Dad can have a beer or wine or whatever we choose! What a double standard.

Pick your battles: I don’t want to ruin a certain food or food group. Instead of force-feeding, I accept defeat on occasion.

Try, try again: “What? You don’t like beets?” Ok, thanks for trying a bite. Eight days later, beets appear on their plates.

Monkey see, monkey do: The amount of mimicking from the youngest is so apparent that we find it comical.

No pressure eldest, but you are setting the tone.

Things that dip: I must come clean again — ketchup appears on our table a lot. Dipping foods are so much more fun to eat.

Variety: I am a recipe-hoarder. Thus, my family tries new dishes regularly.

Eat together: As much as dinnertime can be a zoo at this stage in life, and probably for the foreseeable future, our time spent at the dinner table together is one of my favourite times of the day.

Libraries are one of the first places that come to mind when we talk about books and literacy. Libraries offer shelves full of stories and information that appeals to almost everyone. It starts with the babies whose parents read to them and extends to the patrons who have been borrowing books from the Invermere Public Library for more than five decades. However, literacy is much more than the act of reading books, as it stretches into the things that we do each day. From grocery lists to bank deposits to sending an email and more, we are using and growing our literacy skills on a daily basis throughout our lives.

The Invermere Public Library plays a part in supporting and developing literacy in our community that goes well beyond our library

books. We provide learning opportunities in many ways including our monthly workshops, access to the Internet and technology support, and our programming for children.

Our mission statement is “Connecting the Columbia Valley community and opening the door to a world of knowledge and adventure” and we strive to do just that. Here are some of the ways that we hope to connect with our Columbia Valley community this spring.

By J.D. Jeffery Museum Curator March is a quiet month, but many things still happen at the museum. In February, we had a community member donate some items to us as they have downsized their collection. One of the items was a portrait of Horatio Nelson — the first landmark name.

Mount Nelson. This bald, rocky peak was named after Admiral Viscount Horatio Nelson in 1807 by David Thompson upon hearing about the Admiral’s battle win. At one time, this peak was called Mt. Hammond after the late Herbert Carlyle Hammond. It has reverted back to its original name.

Over the next couple of years, the Earl Grey Pass will have some extensive work done on it. This pass was named after Earl Grey who was, at the time, Governor General of Canada. He had made the trek across the pass from Argenta in the West Kootenays to this valley. It had originally been called “Wells Pass” after Fred Wells, a prospector who, along with Jack Taynton, discovered the pass in 1894 when on a trip from the Windermere District to Rev-

elstoke. Located on this side of the pass is the Earl Grey Cabin that was built for the Governor General. When Earl Grey made the trek, he enjoyed the area so much he planned to return the following year. The cabin was built and the Governor General never returned.

Wilmer’s town site was first called Peterborough, but it caused confusion with the city of the same name in Ontario so it was changed to Wilmer. It was named after the Hon. Wilmer C. Wells, at one time the MLA for the District. The first settlement there was about 1899, consisting of about 100 people. A small hotel was then built by John Moore and George Starke had the Delphine Hotel.

Canal Flats is so named because of the canal that Baillie-Grohman built between Columbia Lake and the Kootenay River. The community was originally known as Grohman and, in David Thompson’s journals, he referred to the location where they crossed the Kootenay River as McGillvery’s Crossing.

For women’s eyes only Fresh old ideas

By Arnold Malone Pioneer Columnist In the early 1960s, my friend Keith and I were canoeing at Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

It was a very hot day so after we returned to our campsite, we decided to go for a beer. The pub was a squat, one-story building, dull white with the patchy faded name, The Ace Of Clubs.

Inside, we sat at the short arm of an “L”-shaped bar. Near by was a pool table. We received our beer then spun our stools to watch the pool players. One player, a male, appeared unhappy, trapped and wishing the game would end.

The other was a noisy, obnoxious, over-the-top boisterous person. Clearly, the boisterous man was winning. He called each shot. “I am going to put this ball right there in that pocket!” he would shout, speaking to the whole pub and most often he would make his shot.

He would then taunt his mate, “See, I told I would make that shot, and I damn well did, didn’t I?” Such boastful language accompanied every shot. He was good and he even had excuses for the shots he missed.

When the game ended, the boisterous man went to the bar and collected forty dollars as each player had deposited twenty.

Then, the loud-mouthed player came to me like a Marine Corp Sergeant, nose to nose, and shouted, “I challenge you to a game of pool and I only play for money!”

I declined.

He roared, “I offered you a challenge, what are you, some wobbly coward?”

Myself: “We just came for one beer.”

Obnoxious: “You’re just chicken liver.”

Myself: “We’re leaving soon to make our supper.”

Obnoxious: “Coward, chicken liver, weakling.”

A tall lady, perhaps in her early 30s, entered the pub. She listened to the exchange, and then walked up and said, “I will play you.”

Obnoxious: “I only play for money.”

Lady: “I will play for money.”

Obnoxious: “I don’t take money from women.”

Lady (quietly): “You haven’t won yet.”

Obnoxious: “I told you I don’t take money from women.”

After a bit, the lady switched tactics, mimicking Mr. Obnoxious’ language except with a soft voice.

Lady: “Coward.”

Obnoxious: “I don’t take money from women.”

Lady: “Coward, chicken liver, weakling, scaredy cat, afraid to play against a woman.”

The obnoxious man’s face flushed, his speech stammered and then he sputtered out, “OK, place your wasted twenty dollars with the bar and I will break.”

Lady: “The longest queue breaks.”

Obnoxious (smirking, likely knowing that he already had the longest queue from the rack): “OK, pick your queue.”

Lady: “Just one moment.” She then left the pub, returning with a long case from which she removed a queue about three inches longer than his. They went to the pool table and she prepared to break.

The bartender leaned over the bar between Keith and I and whispered, “Just watch this.”

I asked, “Is she good?”

Bartender: “Idaho State Champion. She was here last night teaching pool skills to a full house.”

The lady cleared the table and the man never got a shot. Defeated and speechless, he grabbed his cap and stomped off into the night. (Here insert theme song from High Noon) Tuesday, March 8th is International Women’s Day. You will hear that this year is the 100th anniversary since

Musicians gather for another session

By Nicole Trigg Pioneer Staff The next evening of live music hosted by the Windermere Valley Musicians Who Care features three talented acts that make this month’s Valley Sessions a must-see event.

On Saturday, March 5th starting at 7 p.m., the rockin’, foot-stomping sound of Edgewater’s own Sheberdean & The Postmistress folk ensemble will raise the rafters at Pynelogs Cultural Centre, kicking off the night with their lively tunes.

Next up will be Ella Swan, a young newcomer on the valley’s music scene whose passion for singing and playing guitar has earned her a reputation as a multi-

talented musician in a short amount of time.

Well-known local band Stereo Three will finish off the night with their upbeat, catchy songs inspired by the greatest rock music from the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s.

For the unbeatable price of just $10, the March 5th Valley Sessions offers the opportunity to hear some of the Columbia Valley’s best musicians in a concert setting with the added bonus of the Pynelogs cash bar.

However, 55 years or so ago, a skillful lady demonstrated that females could be even more than just equal.

Johnson places fifth in provincial standings

COLUMBIA VALLEY BETTER AT HOME NON-MEDICAL SERVICES FOR SENIORS

A 37-year-old Invermere resident who works at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort has recently received accolades for his efforts on the fairway.

Jeremy Johnson placed #73 out of 100 in the Order of Merit hosted by the 2015 Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) of BC. He was ranked as #5 in the Columbia Valley’s network of golfers.

“I have been golfing since the age of 12,” said Mr. Johnson. “I was first introduced to the game of golf by my father and friends in my hometown and I was instantly hooked. The competitiveness of the game is one of the aspects that I love the most.”

He added that competing against three unique aspects of the game is especially appealing, stating “not only yourself, but also the golf course and other golfers is something that I really enjoy about the game of golf.”

Mr. Johnson’s reaction to being nominated as one of the Top 100 golfers ranked in the 2015 PGA of BC Development program was modest yet proud.

“When I saw the final standings for the Order of Merit I was very excited and honoured to be included,” he said.

“This was the first time that I was in the Top 100 of this fairly new program, which I think has been great at promot-

ing the professionals who participate the most in the provincial association.”

The biggest challenges Mr. Johnson had to overcome to rank in the Order of Merit stemmed from travelling long distances to compete, attending education seminars and spending a significant time commitment volunteering locally.

“With the nature of how the PDP points system works, it can be very challenging to participate in all the provincial events, seminars or golf shows that give out points, as they are usually in the Lower Mainland area,” he explained, while noting many other golfers from the East Kootenay region shared this problem.

“In fact, the professionals from our Columbia Valley that were in the Top 100 should be very proud of our standings considering how much more effort it takes to participate.”

Mr. Johnson has plans to continually develop his golf skills into the future in all aspects and is eager about getting back to the green this season.

“As a golf professional, I am constantly trying to learn and improve in all areas of the profession,” he concluded.

“I find that I am always learning while on the job, an aspect that I think most people will agree is quite common. I also find my continuing education in the golf world comes from golf publications, educational seminars, networking with peers and daily life interactions.”

Toby Creek Nordic team skis onto podium Submitted by Darren Tamelin Head Coach The Toby Creek Nordic Ski Team completed a successful season of racing at the final Kootenay Cup Race Series in Rossland on February 28th. The team competed against difficult rivals from Nelson, Rossland, Salmon Arm, Fernie and Canmore. Conditions were tropical at race time with warm temperatures and difficult waxing conditions. All of the year’s training paid off for the team’s last race of the year with several podium finishes and personal best finishes.

Amongst the team were: Lenni Stich (Pee Wee Boys), who placed 1st overall and in his age group; Virginia Denchuck (Pee Wee Girls) who came in 2nd overall and in her age group; Carly Nickurak (Bantam Girls), who placed 3rd overall, 1st in her age group; Emmylou Grieve (Bantam Girls) who placed 5th overall and 2nd in her age group; and Masha Stich (Midget Girls) who placed 1st overall and in her age group.

Inimitable local RCMP staff sergeant retires

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff All great Canadian moustaches — or more accurately, those that sport them — must step down from the line of duty at some point.

Hal Johnson’s upper lip whiskers no longer grace national television with 90-second Body Break segments; Chris Hadfield’s glorious cookieduster is no longer in orbit aboard the International Space Station; and, as of this week, the valley’s own most prominent moustache — that of Columbia Valley RCMP Staff Sergeant Marko Shehovac — will retire, along with the local police detachment commander.

For the man known up and down the valley simply as Marko (referring to him as Staff Sgt. Shehovac in his send-off story would just be plain wrong), it’s been a long career — four decades of service, including a combined 20 years in Invermere and Golden.

“Retirement has been on my mind for the last two years, but the community here made that decision hard and it was easy to just keep going. I still have mixed feelings. I’m

File photo by Dan Walton going to miss a great deal,” Marko told The Pioneer. “The highlight has always been my relationship with community.

Both Invermere and Golden. I enjoy that when I arrive on a scene; I’m not just a police officer showing up or Staff Sgt. Shehovac showing up. It’s ‘Marko’s here.’ It takes years to build up that level of respect and trust.”

The road to being a staff sergeant began in the 1970s in Sudbury, Ontario and the trademark moustache began not long after, sometime around 1978 or 1979, making its service almost as long as Marko’s.

“Every cop should have a moustache and drink coffee.

You shouldn’t trust one that doesn’t,” he said, adding he has only shaved it off once, for Movember, on a promise after his detachment meet a high fundraising target.

Marko grew up in Sudbury, where his father worked at Inco (the giant nickel mining company), and where Marko worked after finishing a year of law and security at college, while waiting to hear back on his applications to various police forces.

“My father never understood my desire to be a police officer; he kept telling me I could make a lot more money

File photo working for Inco” said Marko. “But I would be in Inco and I’d look out the window and see a police cruiser going by and I realized that I was stuck in one corner, while they were actually out there doing something. I was in a building, but the whole community was where they worked.”

It was the RCMP that called him back first with a job offer. He accepted and, after training in Regina, he took a posting in Montreal, just in time for the airtight security operations of the 1976 Summer Olympics (organizers were worried about a repeat of the 1972 Munich Olympics terrorist attacks), followed by stints in Agassiz, Maple Ridge (where he met and, in 1978, married his wife Bev), Rossland (where the couple’s son Pero was born in 1990), and Salmon Arm. In 1996, he became the second in command at the Golden detachment. Eventually, he became the commander in Golden and then took over as staff sergeant of the Columbia Valley Detachment in Invermere in 2009.

At many of his postings, Marko was fortunate to mentor under strong leaders — Orv Robson, Greg Funk and Bob Allison — whom he credits with inspiring him to want to one day become a sergeant and for teaching him the importance of being community-minded (an approach Marko still adheres to). It was the Rossland posting that sold Marko on the Kootenay region.

Marko’s Halloween patrols have been a highlight for many schoolkids in the valley.

“It was my type of community. There were just four police officers in the detachment and we were all quite involved with the community,” he said. “It got me hooked on the Kootenay area and on working in a small detachment.”

Golden and Invermere proved a great fit for somebody who likes small towns and Marko calls them his best postings by far.

“Everybody knows everybody in a small town and they look out for and take care of each other,” he said. “If you put into the community, the community will give back in return. That’s what Golden and Invermere have done for me. Living in these two places is the greatest life insurance policy I had. I knew if something ever happened to me, that the community would take care of my family. You can have piles of money, but you can’t buy support like that.”

In particular, Marko has a soft spot for the kids of the Upper Columbia Valley (“It’s a unique relationship. Every time I’m up doing school patrol, they always call me by name.”) developed through years of organizing bike donations, detachment open houses, Cram the Cruiser and countless other such initiatives.

As enjoyable as the past four decades have been, there

File photo are aspects of the job Marko will be glad to let go of, such as the pettiness he frequently encounters. (“It particularly bothers me to watch divorced parent use their kids as bargaining tools in their fights. It happens much more often than you’d think.”)

Or having to do next-of-kin notifications. (“That is the worst part. Especially in a small town when you know the person whose door you are knocking on. No amount of practice will ever make that easier.”)

There is an element of danger, too. During Marko’s four decades of service, 261 police officers (including 91 in the RCMP) across Canada have been killed in the line of duty.

“I met some of them in person, knew them,” said Marko. “I’m fortunate that I’ve had a long, healthy career while so many other officers lost their lives.”

He almost wasn’t so fortunate, having had a close call back when he worked in the Salmon Arm detachment.

During a jewelry store robbery, Marko ended up in a fight with the thief on top of him, and the jewelry store owner (who had jumped in to help Marko) on top of the thief.

Water for 1,000,000 seeking donations

By Breanne Massey Pioneer Staff A 40-year-old Invermerian is working to make clean drinking water accessible to those who are living near contaminated water systems.

Meredith Hackler has joined the Water Bearers Campaign movement with the personal goal of raising a total of $5,000 USD to purchase 100 water filters for the needy on March 22nd, which is World Water Day. Each filter serves 100 people. The overall goal of the movement is to give one million people access to clean Meredith Hackler drinking water by World Water Day 2016.

She is hoping to tap into donations of any amount from the Columbia Valley before the deadline, but notes that each water filter costs about $50 USD. “March 22nd is World Water Day, so that’s the deadline and I’ve pledged to attempt to raise money for 100 water filters at $50 USD each,” explained Ms. Hackler.

“So far, I’ve got $350 USD raised out of the $5,000 total.”

There is no minimum to donate to the cause as it is up to each individual to determine what they can contribute to the movement.

“I think it would be an amazing (cause) for individuals, businesses and groups to support,” said Ms. Hackler. “We’re actually going to be setting up a table somewhere in town to collect donations over the next couple of weeks… we haven’t determined where or when yet.”

Ms. Hackler was inspired to participate in the Water Bearers Campaign because the project has remained grassroots.

“This is a grassroots project where ordinary people can step up and basically be the change that we want to see in the world,” she said. “It’s not an elaborate system of going through so many middle men. It’s just a grassroots project, which cuts out a lot of the expense and hassle of other types of things and goes directly where it’s needed.”

“The water filters will be going to places with disaster relief, such as Haiti,” she added. “It’s for people who need access to clean water on an ongoing basis.”

Pioneer Classifieds S OBITUARY S Osterloh, Audrey Doreen January 11th, 1921 – February 23rd, 2016 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt on February 23 at Invermere Hospital. Mom’s “guardian angel”, Sandi Jones, was with her to comfort her at the end. Her grandchildren, Erin and Andy, were able to say their final goodbyes and reassure Grandma that everyone dearly loved her. Jane and Buzz had a long and enjoyable chat with her that afternoon from Hawaii. We take comfort in believing that she knew she was the best mother, Grandma, Nana and aunt we could ever have been blessed with.

Audrey is survived by her son, Buzz (Jane), her grandchildren, Erin (David) and great-granddaughter, Lily Jane Audrey Mueller, and Andy (Connie) and great-grandson, Charles Willem Osterloh.

Audrey is also survived by her son-in-law, Peter McIsaac (Enis), and her grandchildren, Jannis Christine and Robert Andrew. Her grandchildren will miss her always, but there will be peace in their hearts for she provided them with so many happy memories.

Audrey was predeceased by her husband, Charles Edward Henry Osterloh in 2002 and her daughter, Jaryl Audrey McIsaac in 2008.

Audrey was very spiritual and looked forward to reuniting with Charles and Jaryl in Heaven.

Audrey was also predeceased by her parents Ethel Beatrice and William Howard Cleland, her siblings Douglas Cleland, Bud Cleland (Patricia), Allison Mitchell (Corky) and Marion Jones (Carl), her nephew, Thomas Jones, her niece, Carly Patricia Cleland, and her grand niece, Carly Deanna Jones.

Her nephews and nieces were an integral part of Audrey’s life. She will be sorely missed by the Cleland children: Phillip, Gordon, Stuart, Loralyn, Shelley and their families; the Mitchell children: Bill Rogers, Doug, Bill, Ken and their families, and the Jones children: Sandi, Suzanne, Jim and their families. It was this special relationship with her many devoted nieces and nephews and their children that began the tradition of being known by the community and valley as simply “Aunty Aud”.

Audrey was an amazing 95-year-old lady who lived each day with grace, dignity, and enthusiasm. We can all feel proud that this beautiful lady was an integral part of all our lives and an exceptional role model for those whose lives she touched.

Mom would want us to give each other a hug, put a smile on our faces, and remember all the love she gave her family and everyone she met.

Rest in peace, Mom! A life so beautiful will never be forgotten for you have left us with a rich, loving legacy.

We would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Ross and the staff at Invermere Hospital for the wonderful care you gave to Mom. We appreciate the warm welcome Mom always felt as she settled into her new home at Columbia Garden Village.

Early April to end of September The Pynelogs Art Gallery & Cultural Centre, home of the Columbia Valley Arts is the local community arts council that supports the Columbia Valley arts community.

We are currently looking for an Assistant Gallery Curator to assist the Gallery Manager in administrative matters and gallery responsibilities.

Working with the Gallery Manager, the Assistant Gallery Curator oversees the coordination of the Galleries’ curatorial program, assisting with hanging, installing and displaying the Art Gallery Shows, market summer programs and events, cash handling and financial transactions, promote the arts council, assist in registrations/ticket sales, administrative matters and front line sales in the Gift Shop & Gallery. Attention to detail, good organizational skills, ability to work without supervision, motivated, dependable and professional with strong communication and people skills for dealing with the public. Hours of work: full-time up to 40 hours per week, including weekends and some evenings. Rate of pay: depending on experience.

On Friday, February 26th, Interior Health issued an air quality advisory for Radium due to the fire, which stated that while the risk at the time appeared to be low, residents were still advised to reduce their exposure to the fire (by moving to cleaner air or staying indoors) if they experience irritation of eyes, nose or throat, shortness of breath or other respiratory symptoms, and to use common sense regarding outdoor physical activity.

The advisory also stated that people with asthma, chronic illness, heart or lung conditions may be more sensitive to the effects of smoke and should watch for any change in symptoms that may be due to smoke exposure.

“Efforts to extinguish the fire continued Friday (February 26th). The resort brought in a second water truck that morning, and further equipment to break apart the fire is being brought in,” said Mr. Karn. “The fire cannot be extinguished in the same manner as a structural fire. The smouldering piles need to be pulled a part in pieces so that water can be applied in sections and this will take time.”

Mr. Karn added that the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) had confirmed that substantial efforts were being made to extinguish the fire, and that the fire was approximately 80 per cent contained (as of Friday, February 26th) and would be extinguished within the next few days. “It is expected that smoke from the fire could linger in the area after the fire is extinguished, and ministry staff are working with Interior Health to address public health impacts and assistance to affected

“It would be premature to discuss penalties (for the resort) as this is an open Conservation Office Service investigation,” Mr. Karn added.

Columbia River-Revelstoke MLA Norm Macdonald expressed frustration that the incident even happened at all, pointing out that his office had been aware of the pile of waste debris — which should have been properly cleared away — after constituents expressed concern about it almost a year ago.

“Regulations should have been followed from the start, but they were ignored and this is the result — hazardous materials are burning at a time of year when (according to the fire index) no burning should occur,” said Mr. Macdonald. “It’s a dramatic case of environmental damage being caused by regulations not being followed.”

Mr. Macdonald added that he and his staff have been consistently trying to get the issue of the debris pile addressed since they first became aware of it.

“We’ve been dealing with Ministry of Environment staff since then. It’s been an ongoing file, and quite a frustrating one,” he said. “What the ministry does should produce results, proper ones. This (the pile catching fire) is not the result that should be happening. It’s been a year.”

The overarching issue is a lack of funding for the ministry, according to Mr. Macdonald.

“There aren’t enough people to do the job. It puts the Ministry of Environment staff in a tight spot,” he said.

“It makes it even more frustrating in the sense that this should never have happened.”

According to Mr. Goetch, the resort would help as much as possible to deal with the situation, saying “during these challenging times, we will support anybody affected to the best of our ability. We would also like to thank all the local and provincial bodies who have been working so closely in conjunction with us. Their involvement has been invaluable.”

Mr. Macdonald said his office had been receiving complaints from constituents about the fire and smoke since the pile began burning.

The thief had grabbed it and pointed it at his head, and said he was going to kill him.

“I shoved my hand up to get the gun away from my head, just as the gun went off,” he said. “I was able to grab a hold of the cylinder (of the gun) and hold it. I told Mike (the jewelry store owner) ‘I’ve got the cylinder, just keep that gun away from my head.

Help is on its way’.”

Mike was able do that, and help arrived on scene quickly, but Marko acknowledges it was a true life-or-death situation. The store owner later was awarded the highest possible medal for his citizen bravery.

The dangerous and saddening side of police work has never been enough to extinguish Marko’s unflagging sense of humour and loyal Pioneer readers are well aware of the hilarious anecdotes that work their way into Marko’s weekly RCMP reports. (“The most risky ones are the ones that include Bev. I’m really fortunate she also has a sense of humour.”) These stories have not only catapulted Marko into “Most Popular Pioneer Columnist” status, but have also served to help the community get to know him.

“Part of the reason for the stories is that the people in Golden had 13 years to get to know me. I knew I wouldn’t have that long here, but I still wanted the people to know who I am, that I’m human and that police work is not all doom and gloom. It’s important in this job to be able to make fun of your own mistakes,” he said. “Humour is also a way of coping. We see so many negative and traumatic things — crib deaths, accidents, assault — that you have to retain the ability to laugh at the lighter stuff. Otherwise, you

But although it’s time to hang up his badge, Marko promises it won’t be the last the valley sees of him.

“I plan to stay involved with the community through volunteer work,” he said, adding he’s looking forward to moving back up to Golden for what he termed “a more normal family life,” after seven years of Bev being in Golden full-time with Marko going back and forth between there and the couple’s Radium Hot Spring condominium.

“Bev has a list of things for me to do at home that has started to turn into a novel.

She’s made it clear that I’m not just going to sit around,” he said. “She’s made many sacrifices for my career, always leaving her job and moving every time I got a new posting.

I always told her when we retire, she would call the shots. And she will. It’s going to be strange, because I’m going to go from being in charge (of the RCMP detachment) to being the third in command, behind my wife and dog, in my own household.”

And, as Pioneer readers are sure to already know, Marko plans to spend a good deal of time in the coming years fishing in his prized boat. Indeed, he’s already got a trip booked (a gift from Bev) to a fly-in fishing camp in northern Saskatchewan.

Although Marko may be leaving the RCMP, it seems the RCMP will never fully leave him. It was his dream since before high school graduation, and his career ever since.

He still feels a sense of awe when seeing other officers in the red serge (the traditional RCMP uniform) in certain situations.

“It really hits me in regimental funerals or in the RCMP Musical Ride,” he said. “That has always given me perspective — this is what I am and who I am. And I’m proud of it.”

Marko’s last official day of work is today, Friday, March 4th.

By Laura Hermakin Reverend Christ Church Trinity Change: it happens all the time, everywhere. Few of us love change and the chaos that often follows.

More of us resist it, avoid it, and try to ignore it. We deny it’s happening, hide from it, argue against it, and generally want things to continue in the same way as they are now… forever!

We know, however, that change is important — some would say vital — in our lives. Jesus knew this and advocated for so much change that people around him thought he was dangerous. Even his disciples didn’t understand his capacity to introduce change to the culture, societal norms, and ways of relating to God. Jesus lived his life filled with and aware of God’s Holy Spirit. Often it’s God’s Spirit that nudges, pushes, or shoves us toward change and that is never so evident as expressed in the church’s season of Lent. We are currently in the season of Lent and, once again, the church calls us to metanoia: a change of mind and heart, altering one’s mindset toward new ways of thinking and acting. It involves testing our values and discerning how they stack up against the values that Jesus offers his followers.

During this significant time in the Christian year, we are called to reflect on transformational change as we move toward Easter. Springtime brings rebirth, new beginnings, and new growth. Too often, however, we want to race to the Easter resurrection without fully embracing the Lenten process that leads there. Lent reflects the 40 days that Jesus wandered in the wilderness. Few of us can relate to the level of sacrifice and commitment that Jesus displayed in his 40 days, yet Lent provides us with an opportunity to deepen our spirituality. The wilderness — the desert days of Lent — can be a true path toward spiritual transformation.

For many church folk, when Ash Wednesday hits, we think: “O no, now I have to give something up.”

But Ash Wednesday and Lent are so much more than that. It’s a time of preparation, a time of freeing ourselves from the things that bind us and moving into a deeper relationship with God, our family, friends and community. It’s a time to celebrate the gifts God has given us, to examine how well we live those gifts, and to clear away the things that prevent us from being the gifted person we are.

Each of our responses to change is varied. As we attend to the work given to us, we must negotiate through change in healthy, life-giving, and Spirit-led ways. As we move through these changing times, we know that God is with us — in our work, worship, play, struggles and celebrations — as we are nudged and invited to discover where God is calling us to be. We take a deep breath and step forward…

Mutual fund names and strategies While many fixed income funds have names that are largely self-explanatory, equity funds can be more difficult to decipher. Here’s how to better understand equity mutual funds, as evidenced by their names.

Small-, mid-, large-cap The classification of a stock as small, mid or largecap refers to the size of a company’s market capitalization. Market capitalization is calculated by multiplying the price of a stock by the number of shares outstanding.

Small-cap companies are those with a market cap of $300 million to $2 billion; mid-cap companies range from $2 to $10 billion, and large-cap companies are those with a market cap of $10 billion and greater.

All things being equal, large-cap companies should experience less share price volatility and carry a lower risk of bankruptcy than small-cap companies in the same sector, but are also prone to slower growth.

Index Index mutual funds invest in securities in a way that mirrors a particular market index. As most index funds take a sampling of the largest companies in an index, these funds tend to invest in large-cap stocks, unless expressly indicated. In many ways, an index fund is a mutual fund version of an exchange-traded fund (ETF). As both are not actively managed, buying an ETF in lieu of an index fund is often a better choice as the fees are lower.

Growth Growth companies tend to reinvest their profits in research and development rather than pay dividends.

Therefore, a mutual fund with Growth in its name is targeting companies with high capital gains potential.

To follow this mandate, small and mid-cap companies tend to be the focus of growth mutual funds. Large, mature companies tend to experience slower growth, making them a better investment for a dividend fund.

Some mutual funds may have a name like “Growth and Income.” This is a broad mandate that suggests some combination of stock and bond allocations, dividends and capital gains. “Dividend Growth” means companies that are growing their dividends as well as generating capital gains. The name “Growth” on its own, however, indicates a stock fund.

Value Made famous by Warren Buffett, value investing is the practice of using fundamental analysis to identify underpriced securities. Buying stocks at less than their intrinsic value, or buying low, and eventually selling high, is the hallmark of value investing.

Sector Sector funds take a concentrated approach of buying stocks in one area of industry such as technology, health care, gold or energy. This can be a great strategy for those wanting

to own securities in a particular area of the economy. However, caution should be taken to avoid overexposure.

Dividend and income Any mutual fund can pay out income in the form of a distribution, but those with the words dividend or income in their name are specifically targeting incomepaying securities.

Income funds are called such because their returns are derived from interest, dividends and capital gains. Therefore, income funds are a type of balanced fund owning stocks, bonds and other income-paying securities.

Dividend funds are comprised solely of securities that pay dividends, therefore, a dividend fund should always be thought of as an equity fund. As mentioned above, most funds that pay dividends tend to be large, mature companies with revenues in excess of their expenses and expansion plans.

Final thoughts While a mutual fund’s name can give you an idea of the fund’s mandate, it by no means paints a complete picture. When selecting any type of mutual fund, it’s important to review the fund’s asset and sector allocations, top holdings and risk rating, among other factors. Speaking with a financial advisor, as well as reviewing a mutual fund’s prospectus and Fund Facts documents, are also important steps in choosing the right investment.
