Too much for the tow truck On Sunday, January 24th in the afternoon a white SUV went into the ditch on Lakeview Road. A tow truck soon arrived on scene to pull the SUV out, but the snow that had fallen the previous night proved a bigger complication than expected and the tow truck also ended up in the ditch. The pair of vehicles sat in the ditch overnight until Monday, January 25th, when another tow truck — one large enough and strong enough to pull out the initial tow truck — could be sent to the site to help.

Local couple make land commitment

By Breanne Massey Pioneer Staff K2 Ranch owners Bob and Barb Shaunessy have joined with Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) to establish a conservation covenant on 11,000 acres (4,500 hectares) of grasslands of their ranch.

“Ever since purchasing the ranch we have been committed to restoring and conserving this land,” said Bob Shaunessy in a recent press release. “As the oldest working cattle ranch in the Columbia Valley, dating to 1898, the K2 Ranch deserved to be restored to her former glory. We are delighted that our partnership with the Nature Conservancy of Canada means that this property will remain intact over the long term.”

The Shaunessy couple has spent several years restoring the ranch’s grasslands (located on the west side

of Windermere Lake) to their former glory — an effort that has been widely recognized by the Columbia Valley community as a way to prevent ecological threats from developments. However, the partnership between the Shaunessy couple and NCC aims to build an alliance behind a project that will protect animals; while helping the area remain free of developments that have surfaced on the east side of Lake Windermere.

Mr. Shaunessy was unavailable for further comment before The Pioneer went to press.

“This conservation project protects high-value lands for elk, badger, grizzlies and other wide-roaming animals that move through the Columbia Valley. These are animals that residents of the area hold near and dear to our hearts, and ensuring they can move safely across and through the valley is so important,” Nancy Newhouse, director of conservation and Canadian Rockies program

director for the NCC, told The Pioneer.

“At more than 11,000 acres, the SLR-K2 Ranch conservation covenant is also now the largest covenant that the NCC holds in British Columbia. We are very grateful to be working with Bob and Barb Shaunessy to realize our shared commitment to creating a conservation legacy on these valley-bottom lands.”

This is not the first contribution of land that the K2 Ranch has made or will continue to make.

The Shaunessys have long welcomed non-motorized use of parts of their property, and are currently working with the regional district to establish the Westside Legacy Trail that would cross through some of their land and connect Invermere to Fairmont Hot Springs.

“This is one project that’s helping us in our goal to reach 1 million acres of conserved land by Earth Day 2020,” said Ms. Newhouse.

Valley resident’s heartfelt proposal goes viral

By Breanne Massey Pioneer Staff After GPS coordinates failed to help a valley woman locate her boyfriend in -20 degree Celsius weather in the Banff National Park, the Invermere man nearly abandoned the scavenger hunt-themed wedding proposal he had spent several months planning.

Stu Bilodeau, 30, had planned to meet his girlfriend, Karla Bliss, 28, on December 30th under the premise of a lunch date that reunited the couple following an absence over the holidays, all while secretly planning to pop the big question.

“I had the ring for a few months and Karla had gone away to visit family for the last Christmas at their family home before it sells so I wasn’t there,” he said. “When she came back, her sister was going to drive her to Banff and I was going to meet them halfway so that was going to be the time. Then, it turned out to be a beautiful bluebird day and I had a few spots pictured out.”

But Karla struggled to find Stu. “I convinced her that we were going to meet for lunch so I could try to keep it a secret,” explained Stu. “I sent her a GPS coordinate but it didn’t work — she couldn’t find the location.”

Stu added that the temperatures were a frigid -27 C degrees in the morning, but had warmed up to about -20 C degrees in time for their meeting.

“She finally found me,” he said, “but right before she did — a bride and a groom were coming right towards my location.

“Right when they got to me, I had to ask them nicely if they would move off to the side because they were coming down to take photos of their wedding… Then their entire wedding party showed up on a bus and I was starting to think it wasn’t going to work out.”

But the couple willingly obliged Stu’s request and the groom related to Stu’s nervous behaviour on their special day.

• On Thursday January 21st a call of a disturbance near the Red Apple resulted in the arrest of a highly intoxicated and uncooperative 24-year old female from Invermere. She was released in the morning with a ticket for being drunk in public.

• On Thursday January 21st at 9:22 p.m., police attended to a single vehicle accident on Toby Creek Road at Clover Road. A vehicle driven by a 38-year-old male from Calgary headed to Panorama had hit ice and went off the road. No injuries to the driver or passengers.

• On Friday January 22nd at 1:55 a.m., foot patrols were conducted by police at Panorama Village. While in the Great Hall the men’s washroom was checked locating two males standing up in one of the stalls. Suspecting drugs were being consumed, Constable Myers looked and confirmed the males doing lines of coke. One gram of cocaine was seized resulting in possession charges against a 19 and 20-year-old male. The 20-year-old male was lodged in cells for drunk in public.

• On Friday January 22nd at 8 a.m. ,the detachment received a complaint of domestic assault. Investigators were eventually contacted by the victim later that day providing details of an assault. At the time of the call the adult suspect male had departed the area. Police are continuing their investigation.

• On Friday January 22nd at 11:30 a.m., the Columbia Valley detachment received a complaint of theft of a small quantity of one ounce gold bars and cash from a residence. The investigation is continuing.

• On Saturday January 23rd police received an abandoned 911 phone call coming from the arena. Police attended and only found the Beaver Valley Nighthawks in distress, taking a thumping from the Rockies. No police intervention was necessary.

• On Saturday January 23rd at 5:30 p.m., two adult males from Alberta had called in using their cell phone that they had gone out of bounds at Panorama and were now lost. The cell phone was pinged and a possible loca-

tion was provided to the ski patrol as well as Search and Rescue. Within two hours both males were located thanks to the ski patrol and Search and Rescue volunteers.

• On Sunday January 24th at 9:20 p.m., police attended to the Hillcrest apartments and located a 46-year-old male from Invermere who was breaking conditions to not be at the location he was found at. The male was charged with breaching his condition. The same male on January 25th was once again arrested at the same location and charged with a second breach. He will appear in Invermere Provincial Court April 4th. The male was advised that any further breaches will result in being held for a bail hearing to keep him in jail.

Solid citizen: As a youth I grew up next door to an older male and his wife who both had a serious drinking problem.

Both were seldom seen in public given the condition they were constantly in. He supported his drinking habit by selling booze. A bootlegger as we would say. We kids in the neighbourhood remained cautious but we were always eager to do store runs for him. He would hand us a $20 bill and when we returned he would always tell us to keep the change. Often the change could be $5 or more — a lot of money in the 60’s. Around the same time my Dad was making wine and he decided that he would put together a miniature still and make his own whiskey (white lightning) in our basement. He and his friends bought their burial plots before GST came in.

Why give more money to the government, I guess. One day a police officer in an unmarked car chatted with me and asked questions about my neighbor and his activities. I guess my first stab at policing was as an informant of some kind. Not realizing making liquor was illegal (I was young) I told him about my dad’s endeavors at his homemade still. When I told my dad of this conversation with the police he quickly dismantled his project.

After three hours of labour, Rebecca and Michael Hecken welcomed their daughter into the world — the first baby to be born at the Invermere and District Hospital in 2016 — a fortnight ago.

New Year’s Baby Lacey Maria Hecken was delivered

by Dr. Jane Fleet at 6:43 a.m. on Saturday, January 16th.

The newborn arrived at a healthy weight of seven pounds and 14 ounces.

“My contractions really started at about 3:30 a.m.,” said Mrs. Hecken, 26. “I called my Mom to come down and watch (our son) Harley because we needed to go to the hospital. It was probably three or four hours from start to finish.”

Mrs. Hecken was pleased to learn she was the first woman to deliver a newborn in Invermere during 2016.

Lacey is the couple’s second child, as their six-yearold son, Harley, was born at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook.

“I didn’t want to go to Cranbrook because having to drive back with my first (baby) was kind of uncomfortable,” she said with a chuckle. “I was happy to have this baby here in Invermere.”

Mrs. Hecken spoke highly about giving birth at the Invermere and District Hospital and was overall ecstatic about her family’s experience there.

“The staff were very, very good there,” she said.

“They dote on you — right and left — for anything that you needed, they were more than happy to help out.”

But the Hecken family was touched by their son’s reaction.

“Harley really wanted a little sister versus a little brother, so he was very happy about his little sister,” she added. “I’m not really sure why that’s what he wanted but it might have something to do with the fact that he

Full court press

The British Columbia Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) will be back in court, this time in front of the highest court in the land. The Supreme Court of Canada has agreed to hear arguments from the BCTF and the province regarding whether teachers have the constitutional right to bargain class size and composition. In 2002, then-Minister of Education Christy Clark introduced Bill 28 and imposed a new contract on teachers which stripped class size and composition language from the contract. In a 2011 ruling the courts found that the province did not have the authority to remove these issues from the collective bargaining process and ordered the province to reinstate the language.

In 2012 the government passed Bill 22 into law which included language from Bill 28 that continued to deny teachers the right to bargain class size and composition. The B.C. Supreme Court sided once again with teachers in their ruling on Bills 28 and 22 in 2014 with the B.C. Court of Appeals ruling in favour of the government in April 2015.

The question at the heart of the legal proceedings is whether government has the right to unilaterally strip away provisions in a collective bargaining agreement and whether “adequate consultation” is enough to satisfy the government’s responsibility to bargain. Under the Freedom of Assembly provision in the Canadian constitution the right to bargain collectively is guaranteed.

The ramifications of the ruling are huge. Should the BCTF win the cost to B.C. taxpayers will be in the hundreds of millions of dollars annually as thousands of teachers and special education assistants will need to be rehired. Classrooms that have closed will need to reopen to accommodate these increases. A BCTF win also sets classroom size and composition numbers back to where they were prior to 2002. The province would then be free to bargain changes to those numbers.

Should the province prevail it will be free to set class size and composition numbers without having to bargain or consult. As a precedent setting ruling, the Supreme Court’s decision will impact contract negotiations not just in B.C. but in school districts across Canada.

Humans and natural world struggle Dear Editor: There are many different ways for environmental concerns to be expressed in an effort to discover a workable balance in the relations between humans and natural systems. The Mike Harcourt NDP government of the early 1990’s introduced British Columbians to public planning processes through social contract where citizens successfully participated in conflict resolution methodology in combination with judicial review, commissions, inquiries, a free press and public gatherings to open a reasonable path for social change.

Another way to express concern is through the

tactical approaches of the American activism industry. American activism specializes in demagoguery, an appeal to people that plays to their emotions rather than to reason. Name calling, intimidation, issue substitution and ridicule intended to make people feel hatred toward individuals are common tactics.

Followers of the American-style activism industry are usually disciples of the American writer Saul Alynsky. His book 12 Rules for Radicals, may be found quoted on many American activist websites.

Here’s rule five and rule 12. They set the tone.

Rule five: “Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon.”

Rebuttle to McGrath’s opinion Dear Editor: I find it hard to believe Dave McGrath really believes what he wrote in his letter to the editor Jan 22nd. His assertions would be laughable if they were not so spectacularly ill-informed. Where does the assumption “that far too many Canadian organizations, and their American partners have designs to cut a sans-humans swath directly up the gut of our region” come from? Who is “driving us out of our mountain homes and herding us back into stacked-up human settlements in cities”? A quick Google search would enlighten anybody about the mission and vision of organizations such as Wildsight and Y2Y (Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative): “An interconnected system of wild lands and waters stretching from Yellowstone to Yukon, harmonizing the needs of people with those of nature” and “We see healthy human communities thriving with sustainable livelihoods and lifestyles based on a conservation ethic.”

Nobody is advocating pushing humans out of anywhere, but if Mr. McGrath believes that there should be no limits on human development, then he sadly does not understand the importance of intact undisturbed ecosystems to supply us with . . . ‘Humans’ from page 6 Rule 12: “Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it …Go after people and not institutions; people hurt faster than institutions. (This is cruel, but very effective. Direct, personalized criticism and ridicule works.)”

This style of activism perpetuates the activist industry and also provides rich ground for corporations to harness ideology and sell product.Canada adopted the Westminster system of governance at the time of Confederation and it has since evolved based on the idea that in our democracy you accept that you do not get to be right all the time. Sometimes other people have their way, although we may ably make our disagreement known through a free press, work to elect sympathetic governments or appeal to the judiciary for support of our claims. Ours is not a perfect system but it is one that the 250,000 immigrants that we welcomed to Canada every year for the last ten years

things such as clean air and water that we all depend on. Nothing humans have invented can supply clean air and water more efficiently than nature does. Natural Capital consists of natural resources, environmental and ecosystem resources, and land. Scientists have been stressing the importance of valuing the services yielded by our natural capital to support food and water security for healthy, climate resilient communities.

Healthy ecosystems improve water quality, decrease water treatment costs, mitigate flooding, decrease net greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, provide habitat, sustain food production and enhance recreational opportunities.

In our pursuit of the monetary success, we have managed to destroy many of the systems that sustain life on the planet. Each year millions of people around the world die due to air and water pollution. It is clear from what the scientists are telling us, that if we want our planet to be a livable place into the future, we need to protect our life supporting ecosystems and tread more lightly on the earth. Science is based on evidence and facts. Yes, it is time to connect the dots.

The Canadian social contract approach disdains personal attack. Evidence must be substantiated. Hothead conspiracy theories, issue substitution, ridicule and uninformed character assassinations are seen through and discarded.

Of the different ways for concerns to be expressed in practice there are a couple of choices people can make: the American style activism or, alternately, the Canadian style social contract. Following is a comment from “Bob from Calgary” fame that makes it clear which approach I support. He says: “I make a call to all of my fellow citizens to remain involved and vigilant to ensure that Canadian politics remains healthy, that we continue to invest in one another, that we avoid demagoguery and that we work to ensure that Canada remains one of the best countries in the world to live in.”

Works begins on resident strategy

By Dorothy Isted Special to the Pioneer More than 65 people, more than the number registered, turned out at the Columbia Valley Lion’s Hall on earlier this week to engage with elected officials and MDB Insight, a company contracted to look at ways to bring in more permanent residents to the Upper Columbia Valley.

Invermere mayor and Permanent Resident Strategy steering committee chair Gerry Taft welcomed the guests on Tuesday, January 26th and said the goal was not to create a document that would sit on a shelf but they were looking for “actions that can be implemented on keeping people here year round.” There is an online survey on the town’s website, www.invermere.net and he said they’d like to hear from a lot more people. More than 500 have already done the survey, which takes about ten minutes to complete. It is easy to find on the website, sitting in a gold banner at the top of their home page. The cutoff date for the survey is Tuesday, February 2nd.

gether, the event was organized by the municipalities of Canal Flats, Radium, Invermere and Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) rural areas F and G. One of the key phrases on MDB Insight’s website read “Data matters, but only by filtering it through community insights can we create real understanding.”

“MDB is halfway through the process now and will come back with a concrete action plan to be adopted in late March,” said MDB senior consultant Austin Hracs, adding the process about listening to the perspectives of both full and part-time residents of the Columbia Valley, and then identifying and prioritizing next steps and actions to be taken on based on that information.

Two other consultants are working for MDB on the project, including part-time Windermere resident and past Calgary Economic Development president and chief executive officer Bruce Graham. Their joint project assignment is to prepare a report for the steering committee, following a consultation session in Invermere and one in Calgary on Wednesday, January 27th. Please see next week’s Pioneer for a more in-depth story on the focus group session.

Branding and marketing committee proposes single valley-wide DMO The Columbia Valley Branding and Marketing steering committee presented an intriguing idea earlier this week — a way to generate more marketing dollars so everybody from non-profits to small and large business owners can increase their profitability.

The proposal is to create a single Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) for the entire Columbia Valley. Currently we have two: Invermere/Panorama and Radium. Canal Flats and Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Areas F and G, including Fairmont Hot Springs, are not currently aligned with a DMO. More than 80 people attended a meeting on the topic held at Copper Point Resort on Wednesday, January 27th. In 2013 there was a Community Priorities Plan which consulted with 181 people, after which 100 people completed an online survey. From this there were five

top priorities identified, the first priority being branding, marketing and promotion of the Columbia Valley.

Currently the two DMOs collect a two per cent tax charged to guests by accommodators (B&Bs, motels, hotels, cabins) called the municpal regional district tax (MRDT) which must be used specifically for marketing.

The Radium DMO currently generates approximately $144,000 per year with the Invermere/Panorama DMO generating about $95,000 per year. Adding Canal Flats and RDEK Areas F and G is estimated to generate an additional $168,000 in marketing funds per year.

The steering committee forecasts that if a single valley-wide DMO is formed, pooled resources would total more than $400,000 per year. In 2014 Banff, Canmore and all of B.C. had occupancy rates from 60 per cent to 66 per cent. The Columbia Valley had an estimated 47 per cent occupancy rate. More marketing dollars will result in more heads in beds which means more jobs and increased revenues for valley businesses.

To create one DMO for the whole valley, the decision rests with accommodators, from mom and pop businesses to the large resorts. The provincial government requires there to be a minimum vote of 51 per cent by the accommodators to adopt the proposed unified DMO. The steering committee said it realizes that while the decision lies with the accommodators, the support of a majority of stakeholders is needed to succeed with the concept and long term vision of the plan. When the photographer posted the photo to their Facebook account trying to find out who the couple were, it generated waves of attention across Canada.

Eventually, Stu succumbed to his fiance’s navigational impairment and used the bridal party’s bus as a landmark for Karla to find him. “I thought the gig was up,â€? he added. “She was asking where the restaurant was and said I didn’t know what I was talking about‌ then she started walking down to me and was slipping on the ice, wondering why I was not coming to her to give her hug but right when she got to me, I bent down on one knee and said my little spiel. I don’t even remember what I said to her, all I know is that she said yes.â€?

Karla was then surprised to hear an entire wedding party cheer (still hiding up in the trees) when she agreed to marry Stu. “There might have been 40 people standing behind us cheering, hooting and hollering; and Karla was dumbfounded,� said Stu. “We gave a little yeehaw type of thing back to them, but it was a whirlwind.�

Stu was later astonished to learn that

However, it took some time for the photographers to locate the mystery couple on social media (Facebook) to present the newly engaged couple with the photos of the surprise moment. “We had no idea that these photographers captured this great image so this picture went online last weekend and I woke up on Monday with the Internet going crazy,â€? Stu said. “Kimberley Rae saw the picture online (after hearing the engagement story) and sent it to Karla‌ the next thing we knew the story went national.â€?

Karla replied to the thread on the “Calgary Bride� Facebook page and confirmed the photograph was of her and Stu. The couple plans to get married north of Vancouver, on Savary Island, in September 2017. “I think people like a good story and it’s nice to have some happy news,� said Karla, while adding there were 20,000 people to view a clip about their engagement on Global news. “It’s definitely going to be a proposal to remember.� “It better be,� Stu replied to Karla with a chuckle.

However, experienced hunters should weigh up their catches of the past season and allow foodies to delightfully reap the benefits of consuming wild game at a major fundraiser for local outdoors enthusiasts.

The Wild Game banquet hosted by the Lake Windermere District Rod and Gun Club is being held at 5:30 p.m. at the Invermere Community Hall on Saturday, February 20th.

“It’s been running since the mid-50s as a continuation,” said Richard Hoar, Lake Windermere District Rod and Gun Club president and chair of the Wild Game banquet.

“There was some stuff going on before that but because we’ve been around since 1919, this is our annual banquet.”

The social evening will include both a silent and a live auction; a balloon draw; bucket raffles; card draw; youth raffle items; and a photo contest for members with $100 for each category winner.

“We’re a very involved club with lots of different habitat and wildlife projects,” Mr. Hoar explained when asked what the money raised would go to. “We do upgrades and maintenance at our property; we’re involved in education programs; we run the archery program and the air rifle program indoors — the banquet money is used for various things.”

While there is no designated target the club hopes to raise, Mr. Hoar noted that last year’s banquet netted approximately $20,000.

“With all of the money that we raised, we did some new education programs last year,” he said. “One was the Wetland Keepers course and another one was the Wild Kids Camp, and those were free to all of the participants involved, which were run in association with the B.C. Wildlife Federation.”

Tax-Free Savings Account Nuances

Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA) season is now in full swing. Improve your TFSA knowledge by learning some of these lesser-known facts about TFSAs.

Contribution limits As of January 1, 2016 the lifetime contribution limit is $46,500 for somebody who has never contributed and has been eligible for the TFSA since its introduction in 2009. According to the federal government, any individual who is 18 years of age or older and who has a valid social insurance number (SIN) is eligible to open a TFSA. In B.C., however, the provincially recognized age of majority is 19, meaning a B.C. resident must wait until he or she turns 19 to open or contribute to a TFSA. He or she will, however, begin accumulating contribution room the year they turn 18. So a B.C. resident who turns 19 in 2016 will be allowed to invest up to $15,500 to a TFSA on their 19th birthday or later, calculated as $10,000 for 2015 and $5,500 for 2016.

Withdrawals Unlike a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP), withdrawals from a TFSA do not result in lost contribution room. Investors who withdraw from their TFSA will receive that contribution room back in the next calendar year. Withdrawing and re-contributing funds within the same calendar year cannot be done unless there is unused contribution room from current or

previous calendar years.

Over-contributions Being mindful not to exceed one’s TFSA contribution limit is very important, as the federal government does not take over-contributions lightly. Exceeding one’s limit results in a tax of 1 per cent per month until the overage is cleared. It may not sound like much, but a $10,000 over-contribution would be taxed $100 per month for as long as it remained invested.

Watch your NOA Some Canadians misinterpret their TFSA contribution limit by using the figure on their most recent Notice of Assessment (NOA). There are a few reasons why this can be problematic. Firstly, NOAs primarily contain information for the previous calendar year. This means that any TFSA contributions made after December 31, 2015 will not be reflected on one’s next NOA, because it is meant for the 2015 tax year. This can be confusing as NOAs are not usually received until May or June. Further, if a person is using their 2014 NOA to make TFSA contribution decisions in 2016, they must manually add both their 2015 and 2016 contributions to get an accurate figure.

Successor holder There are two types of beneficiary designations per-

mitted on a TFSA: a regular beneficiary, or a successor holder. In the event of the accountholder’s death, a regular beneficiary would receive the TFSA proceeds tax-free, but would not maintain their tax-free status thereafter, unless the beneficiary had enough contribution room of their own available. A successor holder becomes the new account owner. This means that the account proceeds remain invested in a TFSA in the successor holder’s name, without impacting his or her own contribution room.

There is one important caveat, however: a successor holder can only be one’s spouse or common-law partner.

Fortunately, many financial institutions automatically consider spouses who are named as each other’s beneficiaries to be each other’s successor holders.

Not Always Tax-Free Many foreign jurisdictions do not recognize the taxfree status of TFSAs. Therefore, Canadians who own foreign stocks that pay dividends in their TFSA may be subject to foreign non-resident withholding tax. While US stocks carry an exemption from withholding tax under the Canada-US tax treaty for dividends paid to an RRSP or the like, this exemption does not extend to TFSAs. While owning Canadian-domiciled mutual funds that invest in US or foreign holdings keep one’s TFSA earnings tax-free, caution should be taken with individual stock holdings. Moose Hide hits home

By Breanne Massey Pioneer Staff Domestic violence is an issue that hits home for many people around the globe, but the Moose Hide Campaign is hoping to put an end to it by urging men to take a stand against violence for women and children.

Debra Fisher, who serves as both the Columbia Valley Metis Association (CVMA) president and Shuswap Indian Band’s (SIB) education co-ordinator, has begun distributing small square moose hide pins to the community to honour the cause and help it gain traction within Canada.

“It’s an awesome initiative because it’s men-driven,” said Ms. Fisher. “I think it’s both important and impressive that men want to end violence against women and children, and I’m challenging the Columbia Valley to help spread the word.”

The Moose Hide Campaign is a grassroots movement of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal men who are standing up against violence towards women and children. Those who support the cause believe that wearing this piece of moose hide signifies their commitment to honour, respect and protect the women and children in

their lives; while working together with others to raise awareness about domestic violence.

The Moose Hide Campaign began in Victoria, B.C. but the B.C. Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres’ goal is to spread the Moose Hide Campaign to organizations, communities, and governments throughout Canada.

Ms. Fisher has hand delivered 300 pins to the members of the Metis Nation B.C. at the annual general meeting, the Akisqnuk First Nation and the Shuswap Indian Band. She is planning to request additional pins to continue distributing them in the Columbia Valley.

“I’m going to order some more and I’m thinking about dropping it off at the District of Invermere (DOI) to challenge the community to wear them,” said Ms. Fisher, noting others could contact her by e-mail to secure Moose Hide Campaign pins.

In addition, Ms. Fisher has challenged Roxane Baalim (her sister, who is a retired RCMP officer and now is responsible for operating Victim Services for Alberta) to promote the Moose Hide Campaign in Alberta.

“We want to spread the word, so if anybody’s interested in wearing moose hide to support the cause, they can contact me directly,” said Ms. Fisher.

S OBITUARY S Edna Marie Kelly (White) “An angel who walked among us”.

It is with deeply saddened hearts and an end of an era, that we announce the passing of our compassionate champion of life, Mother, Grandmother and dear friend, Edna Marie Kelly. Edna passed with her most prized possession at her side, her family, on January 10th, 2016, in Invermere, B.C. only three months after her beloved husband Roy Kelly.

Our Angel, now in the sky, Edna, leaves behind her children, Maureen and Douglas Kelly, Grandchildren Corinne Gadomski, Kevin and Michelle Gadomski, Chris and Scott Kelly. Edna has joined her father Ernie White, mother Marie White, step mom Beth Magwood, loving daughter Teresa and Sigmund Gadomski, daughterin-law Marylou Kelly, and her sister Jean Platt in the heavens.

Born in Olds, Alberta to Ernie and Marie White on October 30th 1921, Edna married Roy Kelly, the love of her life, after meeting him in business school. Dedicated to her family from the start, she supported her husband’s dreams and aspirations in hockey. They traveled all over Canada and the United States, eventually establishing roots in Calgary, Alberta where they raised their three children.

She was the best Mom! Her home was a safe haven filled with music and love. The love and compassion she had for her children will live as a legacy through their hearts, and endure through the generations to come. The lessons she exemplified are the importance of family, sticking by one another and never giving up.

A life worth living, for Edna, was a life devoted to others. All, including the animals in her life felt her gentle, kind and generous spirit. The many dogs that became Edna’s companions were a true testament to this soul level connection that Edna shared in her life.

Edna’s unconditional love, compassion and support throughout our lives, in the good and bad, in sports and school, in laughter and in tears has filled and enriched our lives forever. Her loving smile could light up a room, her crystal blue eyes could light up your heart, and her gentle loving soul lit up our world. Edna is one of those special people who will always have a lasting place in our hearts. We know that the impact she made in this world will amplify as she continues to work with our Lord in the heavens above.

Sweet spot from reducing sugar intake Natural Health

significant reduction in cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure and blood sugar levels. The most astounding finding was that these positive changes occurred in only nine days. The key to the children’s success appeared to be a reduction of foods containing sucrose, also known as table sugar.

The researchers speculated that fructose, a component of sucrose, was the culprit to blame for poor health. Why is fructose so bad? Like any food, fructose has the potential to be unhealthy when consumed in high quantities, and as a population, we do tend to eat fructose in large amounts. It is added to manufactured and packaged foods such as baked goods, granola bars, ice cream, pop and energy drinks, candy, cereals, and juice such as fruit cocktails.

Some studies have suggested that not only does excessive fructose consumption increase the risk of diabetes, but the liver metabolizes excess fructose into cholesterol and triglycerides which puts people at higher risk for obesity, heart disease, and a fatty liver.

By Dr. Mike Baker Pioneer Columnist As part of my practice, I routinely discuss the benefits of a healthy diet and consistently find that cutting back on sugar is a critical component of patients getting better. This not only helps their present concerns but may also help prevent diseases and conditions associated with excess sugar such as: alzheimers; cancer; diabetes; cardiovascular disease; non-alcoholic fatty liver disease; tooth decay; and obesity.

Recently, a study confirmed that replacing sugar with healthier options can result in impressive health improvements. The study changed the diets of unhealthy obese children, by giving the children the same number of calories but changing the source of those calories from pure sugar to a complex carbohydrate. In the group of children that received starchy carbohydrates (such as root vegetables and whole grains) instead of foods with added sugar, they not only lost a bit of weight, but there was a

Tips to lower sugar consumption The World Health Organization recommends no more than 25 grams of added sugar a day. This applies to sugar added to packaged foods and beverages, fruit

juices, and sweeteners such as honey and maple syrup.

Sugars from fresh produce are not subject to this 25 gram limit.

Be mindful of the sugar content of foods not typically associated as sugary – such as yogurt, bread, healthy cereals, soup, and even condiments like ketchup and hot sauce.

Choose whole, unprocessed foods. This means whole grains and food made from scratch.

If you can’t avoid packaged foods, choose ones that are low in added sugar such as sucrose.

Sugars considered “healthy” such as coconut sugar, brown sugar, cane juice, molasses, honey, maple syrup, dates, and agave should still be consumed in very small quantities.

Dried fruit contains a higher amount of sugar per gram than fresh fruit. At a minimum, have an equal amount or more of vegetable servings as you do fruit servings.

When you can, favor raw, brightly colored vegetables.

Don’t run from challenges

By Father Gabriel St. Joseph’s Catholic Church It’s indeed a thought provoking concept to consider each family as a school where the budding ones are groomed to have a maturity of heart and mind to plunge into the contemporary world. Young people are primarily taught the life skills in the family through interaction with their parents and siblings.

They begin to pick up the family values and ideals and develop their innate potentialities to achieve their hopes and dreams in the future. And so families are looked upon with this high optimism to become ‘role models’ of love, joy, respect, togetherness, sharing and accommodating through their generosity and solidarity. His Holiness Pope Paul VI of happy memory wrote on January 5th 1964, “the school of Nazareth, a role model for all families”. It is in the families that we live together; share and care for our family members. The setting of Nazareth was a quiet place like some of our Canadian villages, cut off from the business of the world, which gave Mary and Joseph the ability to raise the Christ child. Pope Benedict XVI once said that we live in a noisy world.

Everything is too noisy and we are caught up in this busyness. We are unable to find some quiet time, since quiet time is necessary for interior silence, ‘to listen to the voice of God’. In modern times this madness of busyness spoils the aspect of spirituality and most people miss this spiritual component of growth in life.

Nazareth helps us to know the family culture, its values and ideals, and most of all how to live and to make both ends meet. Family togetherness helps us to endure in the face of challenges and motivates us to look for timely guidance. We begin to wonder, with awe, as to how Mary and Joseph managed their life with such ordinary things. It leads us to gratefully acknowledge the wonderful things that we have in modern times and begin to reciprocate an attitude of gratitude to our parents and elders for providing us with such wonderful modern facilities. The purpose of life blossomed in Nazareth and Jesus had a purposeful living. Joseph and Mary are a great example of family life, like our own parents. They shared their love, loyalty and togetherness between each other and showed the Christ child a visible model of treating friends and families respectfully. We are invited to consider whether we could invest more time with our families.

‘Spend quality time with your growing children’ advises Pope Francis. Prioritize family life despite our family tensions and challenges. Saint Paul exhorts us to ‘bear with one another’ to make our families a place of welcoming and nurturing.
