Chamber of Commerce hosts all-candidates forum

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff Columbia Valley residents interested in seeing the local federal election candidates in person will have a chance to do so at an all candidates’ election forum in a little more than two weeks time.

The forum will be held at the David Thompson Secondary School theatre on Monday, September 28th and, as of press time, organizers confirmed it will feature four of the five candidates in the running, including Conservative incumbent David Wilks, NDP candidate Wayne Steski, Liberal candidate Don Johnston and Green candidate Bill Green. The only candidate not yet confirmed for the forum is Libertarian Christina Yahn.

“With the structure of this debate, we get to hear firsthand what the candidates views’ are on a variety of issues,” said forum committee chair Dee Conklin. “It is truly im-

portant that we have the information on issues affecting us locally so the residents can make an informed decision at the voting booth.”

Local resident Jim Neilsen has been selected as moderator of the event. The questions to be asked at the forum will come from suggestions from the local public picked by the committee.

“For the next few weeks, the residents of the valley can submit their questions, then a panel of five will categorize and review the questions, and then structure eight to 12 questions, hopefully, on a variety of issues. The candidates will be emailed the questions 24 hours in advance so they can prepare,” said Ms. Conklin. “Then the moderator will allow each candidate the allotted time to answer the questions. There will be no questions from the floor.”

The forum will run from 7 to 9 p.m. and Ms. Conklin said she expects the theatre to be packed.

“We recommend that folks show up early to get a seat.

It will be a full house,” she said.

Earlier this summer, Mr. Stetski grabbed media attention by challenging Mr. Wilks to debates throughout the riding. Mr. Wilks did not respond at the time (although both Mr. Johnston and Mr. Green indicated they would join in), but was hitting back against Mr. Stetski through his Facebook page earlier this week, saying the Columbia Valley forum was one of nine such forums he will attend in the next few weeks. He said he and his team had requested that local Chambers of Commerce in each community help organize the forums with “no fanfare, no going to the media for publicity.”

Those wishing to submit suggested questions for the forum — which should be related to issues the federal government has control of — can do so at www.thecolumbiavalley.com by clicking on “Submit Forum Questions.”

The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, September 22nd at noon.

Grant’s Foods owner becoming abattoir operator

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff Construction on the Crossroads abattoir will likely begin next spring after the Windermere District Farmers’ Institute (WDFI) passed a motion at its last meeting.

During the Tuesday, September 1st meeting, WDFI projects co-ordinator Hedi Trescher presented a funding proposal for the roughly $640,000 the abattoir project needs to proceed — and the proposal was accepted, paving the way for construction of the building to begin this coming May. “It feels wonderful to be at this stage (of the abattoir project). We’ve been working on it for so long. It’s great to see it go forward,” said Ms. Trescher.

The funding proposal outlines about $145,000 of the project funding coming from the farmers’ institute (the organization already has roughly $21,000) and about $495,000 coming from a few private donors who did not wish to be named.

“We are hoping more donors step forward, or that other avenues of funding can be found, but no matter what happens it will go ahead,” said Ms. Trescher.

The proposal has the WDFI paying for the construction of the project’s roads and infrastructure (which may start even earlier than the scheduled May start of the actual abattoir building construction) and the private donors covering the other costs.

of Watermain Flushing The municipality will be flushing its community water system starting the week of September 14 for the next 8 weeks. This program, carried out twice yearly, is necessary to maintain the quality of our water supply. There may be some short interruptions in the water service and temporary discoloration of water as a result of the sediment and organic materials that are being flushed from the water mains. During this period, disinfection by chlorination will be continued. To assist the Public Works Department during the flushing operation, users are advised that if they are experiencing persistent discoloration or odour problems with the water, to immediately notify the Municipal Office and explain the nature of the problem.

• On Friday, September 4th, detachment received a report of theft of a 12-foot aluminum boat with red stripes from Twin Lakes.

• On Friday, September 4th at noon, the detachment received a report of theft of a 14-foot light blue canoe that was left at Canterbury Point.

• On Friday, September 4th at 9:37 p.m., detachment officers responded to a disturbance complaint in the area of Kpokle Road in Invermere. Officers located a 19-year-old male from Wilmer operating a vehicle displaying signs of having consumed liquor. The driver was issued a three-day driving prohibition.

• On Saturday, September 5th at 12:11 a.m., the detachment responded to a complaint of a bear going through garbage in the area of Canyon Resort Campground on Sinclair Creek Loop Road. The bear had departed the area by the time police arrived. Patrols were negative.

• On Saturday, September 5th at 3 a.m., detachment officers responded to a noise complaint in the 4900 block of Wills Road in Fairmont due to the music playing too loud. Occupants co-operated and turned down the music.

• On Saturday, September 5th at 4 a.m., police responded to a disturbance complaint in the 800 block

of 10th Avenue. An intoxicated male was found to be part of the disturbance and it was requested that he calm down.

The 31-year-old male from Invermere expressed and displayed a desire to not follow police directions to calm down. The male was arrested for being drunk in public and was lodged in cells.

• On Saturday, September 5th at 3 p.m., police received a report of damage done to a 2006 Toyota Sienna on August 20th. The passenger door of the vehicle was damaged. The owner believed the damage may have occurred in the 7000 block of Pine Cone Lane in Radium or at Eagle Ranch Golf Course.

• On Sunday, September 6th, police responded to a disturbance complaint in the 9000 block of Kimpton Road. It was determined that an adult female had departed in a GMC prior to police attending. The vehicle and the driver were later located at Kimpton and Juniper Heights. The driver displayed signs of having consumed liquor and blew a fail on the ASD. The driver was given a 90-day driving prohibition and the vehicle impounded for 30 days.

• On Monday, September 7th at 11:09 p.m., Radium Hot Springs Pools contacted the detachment advising that a bear was roaming the parking lot of their establishment. Pool staff kept people from going out to their cars until the bear was dealt with. Constable Sheppard attended and located the bear. Negotiations resulted in the bear moving on. For now!

We were investigating an outdoor grow operation when we discovered a hidden underground hiding place where we found a number of green plastic garbage cans filled with marijuana bud. I crawled into the underground spot and took pictures for court purposes then backed off. We continued to go back in hopes of setting up surveillance to catch the persons taking care of the plants.

Hunting season kicks off

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff The hunting season has started once again, and is shaping up to be business as usual with no new regulatory changes this fall.

The bow season here in the valley kicked off on Tuesday, September 1st and wrapped up on Wednesday, September 9th, just before the rifle season began on Thursday, September 10th. The various hunting season for different species will continue to see hunters out in the valley’s backcountry until late October.

“There are really no changes this year. The biggest change from last year is still in place this year and it is that, to help conservation of mule deer, the season is only for a four-point or better buck. There is no open season for all mule deer bucks,” said local conservation officer Greg Kruger, adding there is a limit of one mule deer per hunter in effect.

Whitetail deer regulations also remain the same as last year, with a limit of two deer (both must be adults, one can be a buck).

The elk season is also the same as the past few years, and is for only a six-point or better bull, with a limited spike bull season is some parts of wildlife management units 424 and 425.

Previously local butchers Konig’s Meat and Sausage Company had expressed interest in the possibility of becoming the abattoir operator, but never ended up signing a contract with the institute.

“So for a while we were in limbo, trying to figure out where to find an operator,” said Ms. Trescher. “We advertised in the Kootenay Advertiser and in the (Western Canada-wide) Western Pro-

Mr. Kruger encouraged those who want more specific details on the areas and seasons to consult the regulations booklet or check online, at www.env.gov.bc.ca/ fw/wildlife/hunting/regulations.

“If there is any confusion, just call us,” he said, adding the number to do so at is the RAPP (Report All Poacher and Polluters) line at 1-877-952-7277.

“Hunters should always be aware of their own safety and that of others,” said Mr. Kruger. “We also encouraged people to be aware of their surroundings and keep in mind that we do have large carnivores in the area.”

He said this message comes after a incident during last week’s bow season, when two hunters were attempting to call in an elk and inadvertently lured a cougar to them. The hunters then had to kill the cougar in selfdefence, and this is the type of thing the conservation officers hope to avoid as much as possible.

If such an incident does occur, or if a hunter mistakenly kills an animal they should not have (a buck with fewer points than the limit, for instance), the correct procedure is to contact the local conservation officers. Hunters who do not will face much stiffer penalties than those who do.

Candidates coming to Invermere

Kudos to the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce for organizing an all-candidates forum that meets the criteria to get (almost) all of the MP candidates in the Kootenay-Columbia riding to come to Invermere and intellectually duke it out in a debate.

Well, not quite a debate. Questions will be vetted ahead of time by a selection committee then supplied to the candidates 24 hours ahead of time, which gives them ample opportunity to prepare thoughtful remarks, perhaps even with the help of a team, on selected topics.

This type of format, while ensuring an orderly meeting, delivers more of a scripted reality show than a live sports game where candidates spar on the spot in response to questions from the audience with only their wit and timing to save them from sinking in public opinion polls.

But it’s the format Conservative incumbent David Wilks required in order to secure his participation and, thanks to the Chamber for stepping up, Columbia Valley voters will at least get the chance to listen to representatives from Canada’s main political parties speak in public.

It reflects highly on all five candidates that the multi-week question and answer leading up to the October 19th federal election that is being printed in Black Press papers across the Kootenay-Columbia has their full participation.

Editors at each of the papers joined forces to put together a list of questions, and each candidate will answer two a week (see page 10). The Pioneer will run this feature each week with the last installment appearing in the Friday, October 16th issue, just before election day.

This week’s answers show just how diverse the candidates’ views are — passions at the all-candidates forum will no doubt be running high despite the structured forum style. It will be interesting to learn how each prospective politician balances their local agenda with that of their party’s national platform, so take a few hours the evening of September 28th to watch and listen. It will be worth it.

Valley visit was a memorable one Dear Editor: Congratulations and a big thank you to the citizens, businesses, and town council of Invermere. My sister, from Calgary, invited me out for a visit to her place on Lake Windermere. Despite the regrettable problem of forest fire smoke, we enjoyed our visit a lot. Everywhere we went — restaurants, grocery stores, coffee shops, thrift stores, hardware stores, gas stations — people couldn’t have been nicer. A special hats off to your gardening crews. The flowers all over town were exceptional. Keep up the good job you are all doing, especially in these challenging times.

Muddy on garbage rules Dear Editor: I found the article (“Use it properly or lose it: valley transfer stations”) in the September 4th 2015 issue of The Pioneer well-intended, but lacking in detail. I, too, have been frustrated by the seeming lack of concern by the users of the Edgewater site.

I have found the bin to be jammed with dimensional lumber from apparent construction waste in recent weeks.

It was clear that the operator would have to climb in the bin to realign the lumber to allow the bin to be pulled clear of the shed for removal and dumping.

My sincere sympathies to the operator tasked with climbing into a garbage bin filled with god-knows-what because of someone’s lack of thought.

I am sure most of your readers have been on the receiving end of such individuals, but for the most part, most try to follow the rules. That brings me to the point of this letter.

I was surprised by the comments of both Mayor Reinhardt and those of Mr. Paterson of the RDEK. I expect that Mayor Reinhardt uses the Edgewater facility and that the signage present is placed there on Mr. Paterson’s approval.

Whoever said, “size doesn’t matter” wasn’t talking about your house.

Both comment that the bins are intended for household garbage only, yet the signage opposes that.

It does not help the situation when, in large print (see above photo), the sign indicates “everything in the bin” with the post script (small print) including items such as “yard waste,” contrary to the comments of Mr. Paterson.

Practicing due diligence, I read the signage and, yes, I dumped my bag of grass clippings in the bin along with a few tree branches.

Now after reading the article in your paper, my conscience bothers me, perhaps more than those responsible for the signage.

Rotten response to refugees Dear Editor: Harper’s unbelievably bigoted and heartless response to the European refugee crisis is the final straw in a long list of embarrassments by our incompetent leader.

His self-serving attempt to blame the crisis on ISIS further compounds the coldness of his comments. The damage internationally that this man

has caused to Canada’s reputation will take years to undo.

The idea of harvesting, hand-picking and trading fresh produce locally has grown in the Columbia Valley.

Kalista Pruden volunteered to start the Columbia Valley Fruit Exchange closed group on Facebook to reduce wildlife attractants in the community to minimize human-wildlife conflict and share the community’s wealth of food.

The idea to bring people together stems from a concern that Andrea Smillie, WildSafeBC community coordinator, brought to the community she serves.

“In previous years, WildSafe BC had been trying to co-ordinate a way to get fruit off of their trees and off the ground to reduce wildlife attractants in the communities and recently they’ve shifted toward trying to hand that role over to the communities themselves because it takes a lot of time for the co-ordinator and, therefore, a lot of money as a non-profit society to get them to look after that,” said Ms. Pruden, noting Ms. Smillie had approached her with the idea to get involved. “I agreed to take on the role and set-up the Facebook group with the goal of trying to connect people who have fruit with people who want to pick fruit.”

While the goal is to get local fruit off of the ground as well as out of the trees and shrubs to reduce the risk of tempting animals into neighbourhoods, Ms. Pruden believes the opportunity to help with fruit harvesting, fruit picking, fruit sharing and fruit processing could benefit many individuals and groups from the community; including Groundswell Network, the Columbia Valley Food Bank, Wildsight and WildSafeBC. “I have my fingers in with a lot of different groups in the community, so it made sense to get involved,” said Ms. Pruden, noting the support from each group or person comes in at different capacities. “We can pull a few different groups together and support this (goal) to get it going and sustain it in the community.

“I know Groundswell is completely on board with it, and I’m sure that the Columbia Valley Food Bank could benefit from the group as well, and I’m sure that Wildsight will also help spread the word about the group as well.”

Ms. Pruden explained that Ms. Smillie would be forwarding requests for fruit pickers to her on behalf of people who do not have Facebook.

“There are other ways, don’t fret,” said Ms. Pruden.

New group supports nursing mothers

Kimberley-based lactation consultant Daleen Bybee, who serves the East Kootenay region, encourages women to support one another and develop friendships at the monthly Breastfeeding Mamas peer support group in Invermere.

Expectant and nursing mothers can meet at the Invermere Public Library at 10 a.m. on September 16th.

“About four years ago, we started a breastfeeding peer support group in Cranbrook,” explained Ms. Bybee. “It went over really, really well and we had a lot of families interested in the program so the following year, we looked into funding through the Columbia Basin Trust (CBT).”

The CBT contributed funds to start Breastfeeding Mamas’ peer support groups in Fernie, Sparwood, Elkford, Creston and Kimberley.

“We had six groups going, and then in the last couple of years we had some interest from Invermere, so it was just a matter of finding a volunteer out there to head up the group,” said Ms. Bybee. “Now, we have two awesome volunteers in Invermere — Jennifer and Kyla — who facilitate the group. They started in October 2014, so it’s been just about a year.”

CANADA VOTES! This week is the beginning of a six-week Q&A feature leading up to the 42nd Canadian federal election on Monday, October 19th. All five candidates running for Member of Parliament in the Kootenay-Columbia riding have agreed to participate and the Q&A is appearing in Black Press newspapers across the riding.

The MP candidates receive two questions each week and have a week to reply in 300 words or less.

1. What do you consider to be the biggest issue, or need, in this riding?

2. Does your party plan to introduce some form of proportional representation? If so, when and how?

Bill Green Green Party of Canada 1. The most important issue in Kootenay-Columbia is creating a thriving economy in a healthy environment.

We need more local jobs that provide family-supporting incomes, especially for young people. Fostering small business and renewable energy, strengthening our agriculture sector, supporting sustainable forestry, responsible mining and tourism are essential for our long-term prosperity.

Investment in clean technology has been called the greatest business opportunity of this century. The Green Party will establish a Green Venture Capital Fund to aid small business start-ups and will reduce the corporate tax rate on small business. Green Party policy supports community economic development with taxation and incentive programs aimed at municipal infrastructure renewal, energy-efficient home construction and renovation, and clean energy. Many of the building blocks are already in place here. Given the opportunity, the people of KootenayColumbia have the ingenuity, initiative, smarts and skills to build a resilient, diversified low-carbon economy.

2. Proportional representation is a Green Party priority.

Green MPs will begin work immediately to legislate the end of first-past-the-post voting by establishing an all-party Democratic Voting Commission that will: (1) review past research, (2) conduct a public consultation on the style of proportional representation best suited to Canada, and (3) make recommendations to Parliament, including draft legislation, within 12 months. Electoral reform is of critical importance if we want to reinvigorate our democracy. A Green government will further strengthen our democracy by reducing the power of the Prime Minister’s Office, and will never force its MPs to vote on party lines.

Christina Yahn Libertarian Party of Canada 1. I believe that an MP’s primary role is to listen to the constituents in their riding and bring those issues to Parliament. Instead of telling everyone what I believe to be the greatest issue or need, I want to hear from the people living and dealing with the issues that directly effect them. There will be a variety of answers to this question to reflect the myriad of issues in this riding. It is my belief that, if elected, it would be my duty to act as an extension of the peoples’ voice. My personal primary issue is food security. In 2014, a feasibility study revealed that the West Kootenays alone were listed as importing 95 per cent of their food and spending $224 million annually on consumption.

Would not our local economy benefit if a larger portion of that money supported our local food producers? Of that 95 per cent, a good majority is imported from California, with droughts, fires and honeybee declines affecting pollination

of major crops. That leaves our area vulnerable in terms of food security. We can avoid food shortages and price inflations through localizing food and buying local initiatives.

2. The Libertarian party leader Tim Moen endorses proportional representation (PR) being implemented in the Canadian electoral system. He encourages candidates to educate themselves on the variety of PR options available and align ourselves with voting on the system that best supports our individual views. We would create a special joint standing committe equally formed of MPs and senators to examine reform options for the House of Commons elections and Senate appointments. The Libertarian party would introduce and vote on a form of PR before the next elections were to be held. I personally believe fair election reform needs to be introduced as soon as possible to properly restore democracy in Canada.

David Wilks Conservative Party of Canada 1. The main priorities for me in Kootenay-Columbia will continue to be infrastructure for both municipal and regional government and improvements to the Trans-Canada Highway.

The Build Canada Fund, a $53 billion investment over 10 years, will provide communities with the ability to work on infrastructure priorities. This year, funding was approved for Nakusp, Revelstoke, Golden, Fernie, RDEK Area A and Creston. I will continue to ensure that funding for the Trans-Canada Highway is constant and consistent, building on the nearly $300 million of improvements since 2011. This includes projects at Clan Williams, Donald Bridge twinning and improvements throughout the National Parks.

2. Through referendum, citizens in the provinces of Ontario, B.C. and PEI have rejected proportional representation and have voted to keep the “first past the post” system.

Don Johnston Liberal Party of Canada 1. The biggest issue or need in this riding is the need for strong representation in Ottawa and the need to begin working together as a region on the issues that affect rural regions. Close to 80 per cent of Canadians live in urban communities and rural issues are not highly visible on the national agenda. We need to have an MP who understands those issues and who can work across sectors and regions within the riding to begin to raise the profile of those issues and to build a new approach to working together.

We need to remember that the primary responsibility of a Member of Parliament is to represent the riding in Ottawa.

We need an MP who understands that, who has the skills and experience to do that effectively and who will be accountable to voters in the riding. I will hold annual accountability meet-

ings in every community in the riding.

2. As part of a national engagement process, we will ensure that electoral reform measures — such as ranked ballots, proportional representation, mandatory voting and online voting — are fully and fairly considered by a special all-party parliamentary committee. Within 18 months of forming government, we will bring forward legislation to enact electoral reform. Our plan for a fair and open government moves far beyond electoral reform to include democratic parliamentary committees, free votes, strengthening Elections Canada, an independent Senate, and voter training for high school students.

It is a sweeping agenda for real change that better reflects the values of Canadians. Unfortunately, this government’s lack of respect for Parliament is matched by a lack of respect for MPs. Millions of Canadians thought they elected people to be their communities’ voice in Ottawa then watched those same people become Stephen Harper’s voice in their communities.

That is something I can change right here.

Wayne Stetski New Democratic Party (NDP) 1. From a democratic standpoint, the biggest issue in Kootenay-Columbia is electing a Member of Parliament who will be a strong voice for the people of this area, who will deal with your issues in a respectful and timely way, and to have a government that shares your values. I have spent my entire working life in public service. I understand your values, your daily challenges, and how government choices can have a significant impact on your lives.

My priorities are to help create jobs and to support families with a $15-a-day per child childcare program. I am committed to ensuring that universal health care continues, improving income for seniors, and treating our veterans with respect. In order to accomplish this, we need to elect a new government — a government committed to putting you first. In this riding, the NDP is the only choice to stop Stephen Harper and his reckless agenda for Canada.

2. An NDP government will bring in proportional representation. I am committed to making this election the last election to use the first-past-the-post voting system. No longer will a party with only 38 per cent of the vote be able to form a majority and, as a result, act with no regard for the 62 per cent who did not vote for them. Bringing in proportional representation will result in a more diverse and representative Parliament. And it will ensure that every vote counts. In this election, voters are having to consider voting strategically to ensure that Stephen Harper does not form another majority.

This is why I’m asking voters in Kootenay-Columbia to vote together for the NDP to stop Stephen Harper. My promise to traditional Green and Liberal voters in this area is that once the NDP brings in proportional representation, you will never have to vote strategically again.

Paying it forward to Nepal

By Breanne Massey Pioneer Staff After roughly 9,000 Nepalese perished in an earthquake this past April, the devastation that people feel from Mother Nature is far from over.

That’s why Frances Klatzel, founder of CORE International and a long-time Nepal resident who is originally from Calgary, will be hosting the “After the Quake” fundraiser to collect financial donations at 7:30 p.m. at David Thompson Secondary School (DTSS) on Tuesday, September 15th.

“Recovery will be a long-term process,” wrote Ms. Klatzel by email. “Right now, in villages, in the affected 14 districts (out of 75), people who lost their homes are living COUNTRY IN RECOVERY — Effects in makeshift shelters that they constructed to earlier this year. stay dry in the monsoon. In some areas, after losing their homes, landslides took away their land, so several thousand people have come to the Kathmandu valley or other less risky areas for safety.”

She estimates that about 80 to 85 per cent of Kathmandu was not damaged severely, but believes the worst of the carnage is in old areas of the cities, such as Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur.

“Bhaktapur was badly damaged,” her email continued. “Often people are still in the phase of clearing the rubble.”

CORE International (which serves people in poor communities who have been excluded from conventional development assistance) has expanded and adapted its programming to fit the needs of the Nepalese during this time of hardship.

“We made a new connection with a small community service group in Dolakha district through friends who have a long 20-year connection with the area,” she wrote. “The group asked for materials to help people stay clean and healthy and for help for new mothers and pregnant women. We sent materials to every house in the village area – over 1,250 houses.”

But the effort to save Nepal needs support from many people.

Attention runners! Crazy Soles will be hosting the Headbanger Trail Challenge on Saturday, September 26th in Radium Hot Springs to raise money for the Columbia Valley Greenways Trail Alliance (CVGTA).

The CVGTA has an overall goal to link the Village of Canal Flats to Donald (west of Golden) with a trail network for non-motorized forms of transport. The organization is also financially supporting the development of The Westside Legacy Trail. This trail will be a multiuse, non-motorized, paved trail located on the west side of Lake Windermere paralleling Westside Road, connecting the communities of Invermere and Fairmont Hot Springs.

This year’s trail challenge will start at 9 a.m. sharp at the Radium ball diamonds, and participants can choose to run three-, five-, or 10-kilometre distances with registration rates being $10, $20, and $30 respectively. Shirts are available as well for an extra $15 (if registered before Sunday, September 20th).

To register, participants can do so in person at Crazy Soles, by phone (250-342-2074) or by email (crazysoles@telus.net).

This year’s event is featuring a new course as well.

At press time, the route was still being finalized, but will most likely take place throughout Sinclair Canyon.

There will be awards for the top male and female finishers in each distance, as well as prizes, a barbecue, and weird ways to win a new pair of shoes following the race.

The organizers invite participants to pre-run the course with them on Saturday, September 19th. Anyone keen is encouraged to meet at the ball diamonds in Radium at 8:30 a.m. or at Crazy Soles at 8:15 a.m. if a ride to Radium is needed.

And if you would like to participate in the event, but aren’t in the running mood, there is an opportunity to volunteer.

Alder offers tips and tricks

By Breanne Massey Pioneer Staff Vancouver-based guitarist Don Alder will be offering insights and instruction about music to the Columbia Valley before performing a concert at Pynelogs Cultural Centre on Thursday, September 17th.

Mr. Alder plays acoustic fingerstyle guitar with a passion that has won him many of the top guitar competitions in the world including first at the 2011 Guitar Idol Worldwide held in London, UK; first in the 2007 International Fingerstyle Championships in Kansas and first in the 2005 Best 30-second Guitar Solo Contest, to name just a few.

Right before his Pynelogs show, Mr. Alder will be teaching a guitar workshop for beginner to advanced musicians at Pynelogs Cultural Centre between 3:30 and 5 p.m. for $10.

“The workshop will be a lot of fun,” said Mr. Alder.

“It’s for any guitar level, and … we’ll be looking at guitar from a new perspective.”

There will be an emphasis placed on learning how to use the guitar for finger-picking, percussion, tapping

and harmonic purposes during the workshop — a task that Mr. Alder says can easily be adapted for guitar players of any level.

“We’re going to look at how to make it sound more like a band with regular strumming,” added Mr. Alder.

“We’re not going to go into notes and all of that kind of stuff. It’s going to be pretty organic and the reason being: we’re going to have a range of people there and some of the exercises I have work with beginners just as well as they work with advanced players.”

Mr. Alder added it’s no problem to adapt the lesson to any level of experience.

“I can work with them closely and that’s the beauty of having a small class,” he concluded. “It’s going to be about having a bit more fun with the instrument with a focus on artist expression.”

His concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and admission is $20. For those interested in attending the concert and the workshop, there is a discounted rate of $25 to attend both.

“I’m a finger-style guitarist, so I’m a modern guy,” he said, noting that it’s taken time to hone his craft.

Animal kingdom calls for support

By Breanne Massey Pioneer Staff Pet lovers have found another way to support their furry companions.

The Second Annual Friends Helping Furry Friends Golf Tournament will return to the Spur Valley Golf Resort at 1 p.m. on Sunday, September 27th to help raise money for the Global Animal Lovers Society (GALS).

The nine-hole scramble includes a barbecue steak dinner, prizes and doggy bags that have been donated from Cindy Chopper, owner of Chopper’s Pet Care and Supplies in Invmere.

“We’re having a tournament for GALS,” said Aaron Sarson, event organizer. “It’s an organization that helps foster dogs and cats that need homes; and spay and neuter. It’s something that’s close to my heart because I have two foster dogs myself.”

In fact, Mr. Sarson started hosting Golfing for GALS last season when his dog — Piper — needed a knee surgery that was out of his budget. He, along with participating golfers, successfully raised $750 last year and promised to continue running the fundraiser to help others.

“My dog got injured and had to have a major knee surgery that we couldn’t afford so we decided to put on a golf tournament,” explained Mr. Sarson. “Everybody was very nice to help raise money for my dog, so after I said we would help put a tournament on every year once a year at Spur Valley for GALS.” Now, Mr. Sarson is following up on a promise to GALS, which is where he got his two dogs from.

“We just really love dogs and cats and we want them to have homes,” he added.

This year, he is hoping to raise over $1,000 for the cause.

“We want to help pay for fostering and surgeries,”

Before we had skin children

Family Ties

By Lynsey Burke Pioneer Columnist Before we had skin children – we had a fur child.

This fur child made an appearance in nearly every picture we took, she joined us on all possible outings, and was in tow for any dinner invite that we could get away with bringing her to.

“Oh hey, thanks for the invite for dinner… uh, is it okay if we bring our dog too?”

We weren’t quite that brazen. However, those sad brown eyes were — and still are — a weakness.

How could I shut the door on such willing and pathetic eyes?

“Sure Avery, c’mon, we’re going to a friends’ house who has a white couch, white carpet and not a speck of dirt to be seen, I’m sure it’s okay. Just promise to behave yourself… ” I have a vivid memory of introducing Avery dog to our fresh-out-of-the-womb Oliver. My sister-in-law and brother-inlaw looked after her for a few days as our new baby entered the world. We were so excited to introduce our first fur baby to our first skin baby and, as they released the hound at the front door, she came a-barreling into the nursery. She was so excited to see us that she bounded onto my (sore) lap and feverishly licked the delicious smelling baby. Not quite the romanticized meeting that I had visualized, but hey, they’ve just got a lot of love to give, those fur children.

Last week, memories of her nearly 10 years of Labrador life scrolled through our minds like a slideshow at a wake.

From teaching her to swim in the cold waters of the Waterton Lakes and having her fetch our foul balls on our Castlegar slow pitch team to, at times, having her

as our only companion in the new towns we’d move to, having her love us unconditionally and, finally, to welcoming, loving and protecting the two impostor children who have stolen much of her limelight – she’s been game for it all.

Last week, she became suddenly very sick and her position in this family was threatening to become vacant — something that neither my husband nor myself were ready for. Even if she had far exceeded her lifespan and was a 32-year-old dog still kickin’ it, I don’t think I’d be ready.

Family members kept reminding us to “prepare for the worst, but hope for the best.” It was a grey cloud over our heads — the thought of saying goodbye to this lovely creature who has been a part of our lives for a decade yanked hard on my heartstrings. A creature that greets us at the door, that gives us a reason to get out in all weather, that has the quirkiest quirks, and that is predictably dependable. I hated to see her like this.

Thankfully, she has rebounded. Miraculously, her health did a complete 180-degree flip in a matter of hours thanks to two very caring Invermere veterinarians and a lot of hugs and pats from the aforementioned impostors.

And while we know that day will inevitably come, as it does for all devoted pet owners, until then she is going to be getting some wicked bum rubs, some of the juiciest bones to gnaw on and maybe even a pre-bedtime bed fluffing service.

To all those who love their pets and have lost their beloved fur children… thank goodness for such selfless companions that bring and have brought us so much joy.

Memorial tournament makes donation

By Jeremy Johnson Mountainside Golf Course Head Professional On Monday, August 31st, the Mountainside Golf Course at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort hosted the 7th Annual Lorne Rowe Memorial Charity Tournament.

Despite some windy conditions and not the warmest of temperatures, the tournament was a glowing success, with over $2,000 raised to support the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA). Including this year’s funds, this tournament has now contributed over $35,500 to the CDA since its beginnings in 2008.

The success of this tournament can be directly attributed to the contributions of a number of local businesses, the fundraising and volunteering efforts of the Fairmont & District Lions Club and the donation of the golf course by the Fairmont Hot Springs Resort.

This was the second year of a new tournament format, where the 22 teams played in a scramble that takes the team score and subtracts a 10 per cent team handicap to get the net score. The team of Kiefer Jones, Crystal Shapka, Travis Jackson and Bruce Pederson (see photo by Dean Midyette to the left) took home first place with an amazing score of 54.5.

After all was said and done, the tournament that pays tribute to the memory of Lorne Rowe certainly would have made him proud!

Treasure hunt Winter is coming, and Mr. Pronk is making arrangements to search for a gold boulder that was lost in Kootenay Lake during the 1890s.

“I’m going to be looking for the lost gold boulder this winter,” he explained. “In Grey Creek on Kootenay Lake, a gold boulder supposedly was lost in the late 1800s — and because the lake is 400 feet deep, it’s very difficult to get to those depths, but I mean, back in those days, it wasn’t even possible.”

The miracle of Vitamin C Natural Health

By Dr. Mike Baker Pioneer Columnist As we approach cold and flu season, I thought I would touch on a common home remedy for fighting and preventing colds and the flu — vitamin C. It should be noted, however, that recent scientific studies have shown that vitamin C is not effective at preventing nor treating the common cold. The only convincing evidence suggests it may lower the duration of the common cold. How might it do that?

We’re not sure, but it appears to play a role in immune support. Currently this exact process is unknown, but vitamin C is found in high concentrations in our immune system, like white blood cells.

We do know, however, that it plays a key role in building collagen and preventing scurvy, and is used in enzyme reactions for building neurotransmitters, like dopamine.

Collagen is critical for building strong bones, joints, blood vessels, and skin.

Without vitamin C, scurvy symptoms such as poor wound healing, fatigue, loose teeth and bleeding gums can arise.

When it comes to supplementing with vitamin C, it is important to know that only small amounts can be absorbed at one time.

As the dose goes up, a smaller percentage of vitamin C is absorbed. Taking greater than 1,000 milligrams at one time isn’t generally beneficial because only a small amount is actually absorbed and the remainder either passes through or can cause intestinal upset and diarrhea. To improve the absorption of vitamin C, it is best to take small amounts (250 to 500 milligrams) multiple times throughout the day.

Integrative cancer therapy bypasses the absorption issue by injecting vitamin C directly into the blood stream. A mega dose of 25 to 100 grams of vitamin C administered intravenously may increase the effectiveness of radiation and specific chemotherapeutic drugs. This therapy has been shown to reduce side effects of cancer treatment and improve patients’ quality of life by increasing appetite, energy, and reducing pain.

Supplementation of vitamin C is so common because humans are among the few species of animals that cannot make vitamin C and must obtain it all through food. Kakadu plums and camu camu fruits contain the highest amount of vitamin C of any source. But there are other fruits and vegetables that are also very high in vitamin C and may even be found in your garden.

These include rosehips, red bell peppers and broccoli. Red peppers contain roughly 190 milligrams per pepper and one cup of broccoli has about 90 milligrams. Oranges are commonly believed to be a good source of vitamin C, but the average orange contains about half of what is found in a cup of broccoli, or 3.5 times less than a red bell pepper.

Health Canada recommends 90 milligrams a day for adult males and 75 milligrams a day for adult females. Another note: pasteurization destroys vitamin C, so food sources of vitamin C are best consumed raw.

So, when choosing foods rich in vitamin C, pick raw red bell peppers and broccoli over oranges and, if you supplement, try smaller quantities multiple times a day.

Continuing summer education WildSafeBC

By Andrea Smillie WildSafeBC Co-ordinator The summer has been a busy one for WildSafeBC in the Columbia Valley, with some issues arising in different communities regarding bears, deer and cougars.

Reaching visitors to the valley was a big priority, which meant setting up public displays at the Invermere Farmers Market, the Radium Market on Main, the Fairmont Artisans Market, and the AgriPark Summer Fair.

Many visitors had questions about which animals inhabit the area, what their migration patterns are, how to manage attractants in our communities, and how to stay safe while accessing the backcountry.

The summer has come to an end, but that doesn’t mean issues surrounding wildlife are not still abundant. In fact, September is the number one conflict month for bears as they begin to search more actively for food to build their fat-stores for the winter. New skills offered to local dancers Submitted During the August long weekend, Melyssa Hecher, co-owner of United Dance, travelled to Scottsdale, Arizona for the Dance Life Teacher Conference.

This four-day long conference was attended by over 850 studio owners, and invited teachers from Canada, the U.S and many other countries.

It offered sessions on different ways to run your business, and held teaching clinics featuring some of the most talented dancers across North America. Melyssa was given the chance to learn new teaching techniques, new dance styles and new ideas on improved ways to show her love of dance to her students in positive ways.

She decided to attend the conference to continue growing as a teacher and role model, and to take United Dance to even higher levels in teaching delivery.

She is very excited to show her students and their families what she learned from this amazing conference. The season starts the week of September 14th, kicking off a new chapter of dance in Invermere!

Ditching and culvert work upsets Fairmont resident

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff Flood mitigation work is being carried out by Mainroads Contracting Ltd. on behalf of the provincial Ministry of Transportation — and at least one Fairmont Hot Springs resident is none too happy about it.

Local resident Howard Stafford told The Pioneer that Mainroads will be starting ditching and culvert work this fall, and that a number of Fairmont homeowners will need to buy new culverts as a result.

“It’s the way this whole thing is being handled by the Ministry of Transportation. There’s been little if any communication, the only thing has been a letter (dated July 27th) informing us about it,” said Mr. Stafford. “A number of driveways are paved right to the edge of the road, some of them have two entrances, and some people have gardens and lawns right to edge of the road and they’re being told that it is in the (provincial) right of way, right where the ditches are

going to go.”

Mr. Stafford expressed frustration at what he sees as his lack of options, and said many of his neighbours share his concerns.

“Really, we have no comeback to the ministry. They want us to pay for the new culverts that have to go in as part of this ditching. I don’t think the homeowners should be responsible for that,” he said. “None of the homeowners are in favour of this; they don’t think it needs to be done.”

Mainroads operations manager Geoff Gwynne, however, disagrees.

“Almost all of the residents have been quite pleasant and agreeable to talk to,” he said. “There may be one or two people upset, but they haven’t come to us.”

Mr. Gwynne clarified that the upgrades are to prevent some of the flooding incidents Fairmont has experienced in the past few years, and that the three-year project is currently in its third and final year, having begun in the community’s low-lying and most flood-prone areas then gradually working its way uphill.

He also clarified that all the ditching and culvert working is only being done in the provincial right-ofway and not on private property.

“Access has been built by some homeowners onto the road without using the proper culverts and over the years this caused some significant flooding, mostly by sending water into the low-lying properties in Fairmont, instead of having it diverting,” said Mr. Gwynne. “As part of every homeowners’ access permit to build a driveway, they are supposed to have a proper culvert. But many don’t. What we’re doing is providing the culverts at cost and then installing them for free. We’re not making any money off this, we’re simply making it as easy as possible for homeowners to do what they’re legally required to.”

The typical culvert cost is $50 per metre, he said, adding that he’s aware there is some landscaping in the area that goes right up to the road, but that such landscaping is encroaching on the provincial right of way.

“We need to have all the driveway culverts up there to be the type they always should’ve been. I understand that some of the improper ones have been there awhile, but we need to remedy that to get proper drainage in the whole area, and to get water where it’s supposed to go, instead of having it always going into somebody else’s backyard,” he said.

The work will start on Monday, September 14th and will likely wrap up by Friday, September 18th, a timeframe that Mr. Gwynne said was purposefully chosen in order to minimize disruption to homeowners during the busy summer season.

BIG SALE —A garage sale in Radium raised over $2,000 for the Hospice Society of the Columbia Valley on September 5th.

Too much stuff becomes cause for celebration Submited by Georgina Moxam The cool and rainy weather on September 5th did not dampen the spirits of a group of enthusiastic folks in Radium Hot Springs.

Resident Georgina Moxam held a very successful garage sale and $2,188.00 was raised. All proceeds will be donated to the Hospice Society of the Columbia Valley.

Many thanks to Joe Evanoff and Steve Kuffler of the Radium Golf Group for their support of this event. The sale could not have happened without the help of friend and neighbor Nancy Parkins who spent many hours organizing the items. Thanks also to Cindy Ibach, Florence Chivers, Hospice volunteers John and Debbie Soby and Sigi Black for their time as the gracious cashiers. Other contributors include friends Ann McIntosh, Barb Holberg, Joan Gallaway, Deb and Paul Buccini, Dianne and Bob Powers, Darrell Ibach, Kathie Mintoft and Gurmeet Brar, Carol and John Fitzsimmons.

Crawled back into the hidden place and the garbage cans with the buds were also gone. We had an idea of who owned the grow operation and we descended on the place with a search warrant. We seized some of the marijuana and large amount of dried bud and charged the person. A number of green garbage cans were located in the front yard.

The fellow we had charged had graduated from law school and was attempting to become licensed

On Wednesday, September 16th, the Hospice will celebrate two years of delivering end-of-life visits to residents of the Columbia Valley. In that time, they delivered over 1,200 visits and have assisted 46 clients and their families to date.

These numbers do not include the bereavement programs, which began in January of this year.

In the fall, the Hospice Society will be hosting walk and talk groups throughout the valley, information nights on how to support friends and family who are grieving, and a bereavement support group in Fairmont.

respond yes. “In fact Constable, maybe hundreds of thousands sold all over North America.” I respond yes. “Would you agree with me, Constable, that the picture you took are typical of these hundreds of thousands sold?” I respond yes. “Then Constable, how is it that you can tell me that the ones you are seizing from the front yard are the same cans that you photographed with the marijuana?” I turned the can upside down to show him and responded: “Because my initial, date and time are on the bottom of the garbage cans.”

Prayer, prayer and more prayer

By Pastor Wayne Frater Radium Christian Fellowship Church I don’t know about you, but I sometimes forget how great and wonderful and awesome God is. I forget about how much He loves me. Sometimes I feel discouraged or depressed, maybe worried about something going on in my life, or maybe in my family or friends’ lives; maybe it is a financial problem, or maybe a health problem.

The other morning as I was spending time with the Lord, He impressed on me that if I would be quiet and listen, He had something to say. Now the Lord speaks to us, if we are willing to listen, in many different ways, but the most common — and by far the most powerful — is through His written Word, the Bible.

I sat quietly for a few minutes, I opened up the Bible, and He took me to 2 Corinthians chapter 4:13-18.

NKJV. As I read these verses out loud to myself, they came alive.

13 And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I believed and therefore I spoke,”[a] we also believe and therefore speak, 14 knowing that He who raised up the Lord Jesus will also raise us up with Jesus, and will present us with you.

15 For all things are for your sakes, that grace, having spread through the many, may cause thanksgiving to

abound to the glory of God.16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. 17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, 18 while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

And Romans 8:31, 38, 39: 31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Through God speaking to me through His Word, I was reminded of His Love for me, that even when everything seems to be piled up against us, we can always sing songs of praise to our Lord, and we can, no matter what our age, or the circumstances of our surroundings, we can always pray. And I know God answers those prayers.

God is calling His people to prayer, for the last couple of months, over and over God has reminded me of the need for prayer, our families, our friends, our towns and cities, our country, needs our prayer.

2 Chronicles 7:14,15 14 if My people who are called

by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. 15 Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to prayer made in this place.

Pantry party Despite the weather over 300 people arrived for free brats and burgers on September 5th at the Canal Flats Family Pantry Customer Appreciation Day. Maeghan Stanbury lit up the store with her creatively ghoulish face painting skills.

YOUR MONEY Myths about the U.S. debt

Many Canadian remain wary of the U.S. economy, primarily because of its federal debt load, currently at $18.1 trillion. But is this reasonable? Here are some myths and facts about U.S. debt.

National debt will bankrupt the U.S. The U.S. government can print money and has the power to tax the largest economy in the world. Plus, about 45 per cent of U.S. debt is owned by government agencies such as the Federal Reserve, Social Security and Medicare. This begs the question: does this portion of U.S. debt really exist if the government owes itself?

In theory, the U.S. Treasury could just print money and make it go away.

It’s important to understand that no nation can save its way out of a weak economy. Investment has to come first, which will lead to savings. GDP will not increase unless someone spends money on something, be it consumers, corporate investment or the government. Reducing spending and investment in a sluggish economy means that GDP will stagnate or fall. Increasing the national debt has helped ensure the U.S. will not go bankrupt.

U.S. debt has to be paid back In theory, yes, however the U.S. Treasury has had debt outstanding since 1791 and has never paid it down fully. Often, the treasury department simply issues new

bonds to pay off old ones. This is not a problem as long as investors want to hold treasury bonds, which they do as they are liquid (easily converted to cash) and low risk (backed by the largest economy in the world).

How does one reduce debt? By paying it off or devaluing it. If one’s house rises a lot in value, their mortgage seems smaller by comparison. Likewise, if the U.S. sees lots of inflation, the future value of today’s debt will be much lower.

Inflation will essentially “pay back” a significant portion of America’s debt load.

U.S. consumers have too much debt Actually, Canadian households have more debt per capita than U.S. Canadians have about 165 per cent debt to household income, while American households have just 100 per cent — 40 per cent less than Canadians.

Moreover, Canada’s debt problem lies with its consumers while in the U.S., debt resides with the government. While consumers have limited ability to increase their income or reduce debts, governments can simply print money, increase income through taxation, and inflate their way out of debt.

China controls too much debt China owns about $3.7 trillion U.S. dollars, but only about $1.2 trillion is in U.S. bonds. As bonds are

issued with a maturity date, China can’t demand repayment from the U.S. on a whim.

If China wants to get rid of their U.S. bonds, they would have to find buyers for them in the financial markets, just like any other security.

Furthermore, selling a large amount of U.S. bonds would drive the U.S. dollar down, which is counterproductive for China as the U.S. is their largest trading partner. Closing the spread between their respective currencies erodes China’s competitive advantage.

There is nothing sinister about China owning a lot of U.S. bonds. Holding high foreign currency reserves is a natural phenomenon for an export nation. Countries that sell more goods and services to the U.S. than they buy from the U.S. end up with trade surpluses, which must be held in dollar assets. These countries can do three things with those dollars: buy U.S. goods, buy U.S. assets like government bonds, or exchange those dollars for another currency.

Final thoughts While not ideal, the U.S. debt load should help advance their economy over the long term. Today, U.S. corporate earnings are improving, unemployment is falling and investment is increasing. These are all markings of an improving economy, and their debt load has a lot to do with that.
