Southeast Fire Centre lifts campfire ban

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff The campfire ban that was in place for B.C.’s Southeast Fire Centre (which includes the entire Kootenay region) has been lifted for smaller, contained campfires.

The ban formally ended at noon on Monday, August 31st, the result of cooler and wetter conditions and a decreased wildfire risk in the region. Kootenay residents can now enjoy campfires that are smaller in size than a half-metre wide by a half-metre high, or open fires in outdoor stoves.

Anybody who does light a campfire must still have a hand tool (such as a shovel)

and at least eight litres of water nearby to help put out the fire if it does start to get out of control.

Many other types of fires, however, remain prohibited, including small backyard burning piles; any fire larger in size than a half-metre wide by a half-metre high; burning stubble or grass in an area covering up to 0.2 hectares; fireworks, sky lanterns and burning barrels; the use of binary exploding targets; the use of air curtain burners (forced air burning systems); and any other large open fires.

Most municipalities in the East Kootenay (including Invermere, Radium Hot Springs and Canal Flats) have followed suit and lifted their corresponding municipal fire bans. Visit www.bcwildfire.ca/Aboutus/organization/southeast for more.

Use it (properly) or lose it: valley transfer stations

By Breanne Massey Pioneer Staff The use and abuse of transfer stations in the Columbia Valley could cost residents and weekenders more than they bargained for in the future.

Some people have been bringing waste from their yards and gardens, as well as construction and demolitions, to transfer sites throughout the region in spite of the fact that transfer sites are exclusively intended for residential garbage.

“A lot of people don’t realize that to dump household garbage at the Windermere Landfill is free,” said District of Invermere mayor Gerry Taft. “With that in mind, there’s really no excuse for people to misuse dumpster bins in town and dispose of garbage in an improper way, or to use other commercial bins. An extra two or three minutes to drive to the landfill is re-

ally not unreasonable to expect of people to deal with the issue properly.”

He added there are regulations at the Windermere Landfill to help minimize conflicts with wildlife.

“The Windermere Solid Waste Management site has procedures in place, such as putting covers on the bins every day to prevent wildlife from getting into the garbage,” said Mr. Taft, noting the goal is to help improve life for humans and animals in the valley.

“It’s a better place for people to dispose of large items because trying to put some large items into the dumpster bin — well, it’s just not the right place to do it.”

Mr. Taft added there will be a strong security presence in the Columbia Valley this fall when bears are more active to ensure people are respecting each garbage disposal location. Invermere’s transfer station is located in the Industrial Park and is for household waste only.

“We don’t want to create an even worse problem for habituated bears in town,” concluded Mr. Taft.

Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) environmental services manager Kevin Paterson said regions having access to unsupervised transfer stations was rare in B.C. “The East Kootenay is rather unique in that we provide unmanned, free-access to our transfer facilities,” said Mr. Paterson. “It’s quite uncommon. Throughout the province, most of the sites are manned or gated for certain hours that they are available… we rely on the public to help us keep the sites tidy.”

Although RDEK staff visit the valley’s rural transfer sites during the week, Mr. Paterson acknowledges that keeping the sites clean and open without staff requires support from the entire Columbia Valley.

Columbia Valley RCMP responded to approximately 81 calls for service over the past week. Here are just a few of them: • On Thursday, August 27th, a local female attended the Columbia Valley RCMP detachment to inquire about a cheque she’d received as she believed it was a possible scam. She stated she had been corresponding via email with a man who advised he was currently residing in Belgium. The male was requesting she provide counselling for his daughter and sent her a cheque for $3,800. He asked her to deposit the cheque and pay out a couple of different individuals with the money (for airfare, chaperone for his daughter — name unknown). She became suspicious and suspected a scam. The cheque came from Canaccord Financial located in Vancouver, B.C. Police called and spoke with a representative with Canaccord who stated they’ve had numerous calls about the fraudulent cheques with their logo on them. The representative believed that whoever is running the scam has made duplicates of an original joint Canaccord/BMO cheque and has been forging serial numbers and cheque numbers. Investigation is ongoing.

• On Saturday, August 29th, a motorist called RCMP to advise of a suspicious male riding a bicycle on Highway 93/95 near Edgewater who appeared to have a concealed rifle under his shirt. The motorist provided a detailed description of the cyclist. The motorist last saw the male entering Edgewater. Police attended and conducted patrols. After some discussion, attending members agreed that the description of the male may be a subject who is well-known to police. Members attended to the subject’s home and spoke with him there. After a few minutes of denying it, the male admitted to riding his bike on the highway and stated he had a BB gun under his shirt, which he had found on the highway. He stated that he found the gun, but did not want to leave

it on the highway, so brought it with him into Edgewater. He went on to say that he had spoken with a male who was searching in the area and advised his BB gun had fallen out of the back of his truck on the highway. The cyclist advised he returned the BB gun to the male searching for it and carried on his way. The male invited members into his home to ensure a rifle was not present or unsecure. Home was cleared with no sign of any firearms.

• On Sunday, August 30th at 12:23 a.m., RCMP dispatch reported that EHS was requesting police assistance with a minivan in a ditch on Highway 93/95 and Fairmont Resort Road in Fairmont Hot Springs. Columbia Valley RCMP members attended to a two-vehicle accident. There was a brown 1998 Toyota Sienna in the ditch on the southwest side of Fairmont Resort Road and a blue 2014 Dodge Caravan stopped on the west side of the highway, blocking the eastbound lane on Fairmont Resort Road. The female driver of the Sienna sustained head and neck injuries and was transported to Invermere Hospital then Cranbrook Hospital. Her sons were in the Sienna, however, none of them were injured. The male driver of the Caravan was uninjured. His wife and her sister who were travelling with him were also uninjured. Investigation revealed that the Sienna was travelling south on Highway 93/95 when the Caravan, attempting to cross the highway from east to west, did not yield to the Sienna’s right of way. The front right bumper and hood of the Caravan was damaged. The front left bumper and hood and the entire left side of the Sienna was damaged. Photos and statements were obtained on scene. The driver of the Caravan was issued a violation ticket for failing to yield after stop.

• On Sunday, August 30th at 10:55 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of threats from a Lakeview Meadows security guard who advised an unknown male had been yelling at him from the beach area of Lakeview Meadows while he was conducting his routine patrols.

Local trio aim to help get more young people to vote

A group of young adults here in the valley hope to boost their demographic’s presence at the voting stations during the coming federal election.

Brodie Smith, Steph Calvert and Eden Yesh feel strongly that everybody should participate in the elections. They will be, in a non-partisan effort, spending a few hours on two separate nights in the coming weeks helping voters register and providing information about voting.

Columbia Valley RCMP responded to the report and conducted patrols in the area on foot for the male with negative results at the time. Investigation is ongoing.

Love of the land

This week’s issue of The Pioneer — the last long weekend issue of the summer — came together with one prominent theme running through its pages. Whether they’re hunters or gatherers (well, gardeners), foodies, farmers or fun lovin’ families, everyone who contributed shares a common love of the land.

From submitted photos of eagles, deer and turtles, to columns by the local watershed and wildlife co-ordinators, to articles on fish habitat restoration, fall gardening advice, the newly formed Columbia Valley Food Corridor Association, community-wide composting services and more, the Columbia Valley community is united in its appreciation of the wilderness and nature surrounding us; and in its passion for protecting — and enhancing — what makes this region so special and valuable.

Which is why the issue of improperly — and unlawfully — disposed garbage is such a sore point for many in the valley. Not only is it an eyesore (see the Jeers on page 40), or an unfair financial burden on businesses that have to pay the extra cost when household waste is shoved into their dumpsters, but it’s an invitation to wildlife to become habituated to easily accessible food, which inevitably means they’re likely to be killed for endangering humans when it’s humans who are causing the problem in the first place. And if that’s not enough, residents may be forced to pay more for garbage disposal if the transfer stations aren’t taken care of because staff will be hired to man them to make sure they are.

Disposing garbage at the designated sites (see our list with addresses on page 10) is one way to show your respect for this land we all love. If you have suggestions to help improve the system, then by all means, let local government know. But putting garbage where it doesn’t belong isn’t the answer.

Politics at its best or worst?

Dear Editor: With the official start of the federal election being called over the August long weekend, we also saw the start of political parties’ election sign campaigns.

Now, love them or hate them, they are part of the political tradition in Canada, and one of the most effective ways that candidates have to put their names forward to the public.

As the campaign manager for Wayne Stetski, I knew that people would quickly tire of seeing too many campaign signs on public property, so our team has chosen to be judicious and sparing in our approach.

Every election in which I have participated in

this area has had some level of mischief perpetrated on campaign signs of all political stripes. Actions range from supposedly humorous slogans added to signs, to theft of hundreds of signs in a single night, to signs actually being burned or slashed.

But I have always chosen to believe that these were the actions of misguided pranksters. I have never believed that it was politically motivated or the targeted actions of another campaign.

This weekend, reports were made of widespread theft and damage of signs in communities across the riding, and a number of these incidents were severe enough to be reported to the RCMP. Continued on page 18 . . .

By Nicole Trigg Pioneer Staff Parkinson’s disease is a disorder of the nervous system that develops gradually, sometimes starting with a barely noticeable tremor in just one hand.

The symptoms worsen as the condition progresses — your face may show little or no emotion, or your arms may not swing when you walk. Stiffness and slowing of movement become more severe over time.

Over 12,500 British Columbians are currently living with Parkinson’s disease and while there’s no cure, medication and exercise can improve symptoms.

This is why the annual Parkinson’s Superwalk is important both as a symbol of the fight against this neuro-degenerative disease and as a fundraiser.

Last year, 14,000 volunteers and participants across Canada raised $2.9 million with proceeds supporting Canadian research and vital support services for those suffering from Parkinson’s.

On Saturday, September 12th, the annual Parkinson Superwalk will take place in Invermere — one of 115 events that will take place across Canada.

This year, due to health issues, the event’s founder and organizer, Grace Sander (who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1998 at the age of 53), was not able to volunteer. Jenny Hillman has taken over the reins.

Help Ms. Sander’s legacy continue by showing up at Pothole Park at 1 p.m. on September 12th.

10 • The Columbia Valley Pioneer . . . ‘Use’ from page 3 “The rural sites such as Edgewater, Brisco, Fairmont (there is also one in Canal Flats) — those transfer sites are intended for residential household waste only,” said Mr. Paterson. “Any of the larger waste, being yard and garden waste, lawn cuttings, construction and demolition waste really should be going to our landfill in the Columbia Valley because, if we receive it there, then oftentimes we can divert some of those materials and avoid burying them, but everything left at a rural transfer station or site gets buried so there’s no opportunity to divert that.”

He encourages people to sort through their garbage and bring it to the appropriate location for disposal.

“In 2014, we removed 922 or roughly 1,000 tons (of garbage) out of Fairmont,” concluded Mr. Paterson. “Edgewater was 1,055 tons, Brisco was 285 tons, so if you add those, it’s 2,300 tons from those three (communities) alone.”

Village of Radium Hot Springs mayor Clara Reinhardt is urging people to practise leaving only household garbage at the transfer sites in the Columbia Valley — the nearest ones to Radium are the rural transfer station in Edgewater or the Windermere

September 4, 2015 Landfill. She believes there is a risk of losing access to unsupervised transfer sites if the abuse of each location continues. Radium council is exploring alternative options to improve access to waste disposal programs.

“The challenge is, if we went to supervised sites, our access would be limited because our cost would go up,” said Ms. Reinhardt, noting the cost of staffing and construction of a suitable site would be substantial. “There may come a time where that has to happen, but at this point, we have (Mr. Paterson) coming up to do a tour before the end of the summer and we’re looking forward to him looking at some of the sites and potential sites in Radium (to expand), as well as some of the challenges,” Ms. Reinhardt said.

Tourism Radium manager Kent Kebe supports the direction being taken by VilVisitor Centre lage of Radium Hot Springs council and has been working toward educating visitors on the right way when it comes to waste disposal.

“We’re supporting the village in their initiative to look at a possible transfer station in the village at some point down the road,” said Mr. Kebe, noting the ideal situation would be to keep the current sites functioning as usual.

Panorama hosts fundraiser for Campbell family

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff A fundraiser for local couple Forrest and Cassie Campbell and their two sons will be held at Panorama Mountain Resort on the last weekend of the resort’s summer season.

Forrest suffered a serious spinal cord injury while skiing this past March, and funds are being raised to help the family build an addition on their home that will make it wheelchair accessible.

“Local support for the Campbells has been incredible, both with donations coming in for the auctions at the fundraiser and in terms of the support the valley has already shown for the family,” said event co-organizer Christine Shaw. “They are a great family that needs a bit of help right now.

They’ve started work on the addition to their home and a lot of people have donated time to help them build it — hopefully this fundraiser will help them complete it.”

Hot Muck comes to Hoodoos

The sounds of bluegrass, rock ‘n’ roll and folk music will echo through the Columbia Valley this weekend.

Kimberley-based band Hot Muck will be performing at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 6th at the Hoodoo Lounge & Grill.

“The band formed about three years ago,” said Brian Morris, guitar and vocals. “We do basically bluegrass to rock ‘n’ roll, and a little bit of everything in between.”

The band includes Ryan Peterson on banjo, Ally Blake on fiddle, Sean Downey on bass guitar and Rich Krewenchuk on drums. Although Mr. Morris

When asked what first-time attendees can expect from the concert, Mr. Morris replied, “I’d say to expect some high energy bluegrass and rock ‘n’ roll. We do a mixture of things, and people never really know what we’re going to do next because there’s always something different in the works.”

By Ella Swan Pioneer Columnist People often ask us: “How is the lake doing quality wise?” It’s a difficult question to answer because water quality data must be taken into context on a timeline to be understood. A great way to keep up with the current data through the summer months is to pick up The Valley Echo and read the weekly Lake Windermere Pulse Check. We take a volunteer out every week and report on quality.

Something you may not know is that we do other sampling that isn’t quite as publicized. Through a partnership with Interior Health, the Ambassadors sample Windermere, James Chabot and Kinsmen Beaches every Monday morning. Mainly, we are looking for E. coli.

E. coli is a group of bacterium commonly found in the lower intestines of warm-blooded animals such as dogs (and humans). Some are harmless and some can even be beneficial. But some strains can make people very sick; especially elderly people and toddlers.

Beaches can become infected with E. coli in many different ways. When it comes to water bodies, one of the causes of E. coli is animal feces. Even without being deposited directly into the water, fecal matter near a shoreline can have a negative impact on water quality. A rain event can quickly wash shoreline feces into the lake, which is why it’s a good idea for dog owners to clean up after their dogs even if

it’s “out of the way” in the bushes. Overall, it’s better to have separate beaches for dogs and humans to swim in. Other sources of E. coli contamination are septic systems that aren’t working properly, wild animals such as birds, and garbage.

Testing labs work in “cfu” (colony forming units) of E. coli per 100 ml.

Beyond a certain threshold of acceptable numbers, a beach is required to be closed.

We monitor for recreational water quality, which is different than drinking water quality (drinking water is not allowed any E. coli at all). So how do our beaches place? We are so lucky to have a lake like Lake Windermere. The results we get back rarely exceed 15 counts of E. coli and average less than 5 counts per sample. To put that into perspective, the acceptable limit of E. coli is 200 cfu per 100ml.

Name game continues Curator’s Corner

By J.D. Jeffery Museum Curator The summer has gone and things are starting to slow down. The museum changes its hours in September, so make a note on your calendar, Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Last month I wrote about the many names of Invermere and this led to the question: “Why the name Invermere?”

In my travels into our museum’s vault, I was able to find the reason for the name Copper City and Canterbury, but, without spending many hours reading daily journals, I have not found a reference as to why it was eventually named Invermere. Invermere, broken down, is “inver” (mouth of) and “mere” (lake), and there is also an Invermere in Scotland where Robert Randolph Bruce originally came from.

I can only speculate that when people came here to live, they named things after places they knew. This brought them comfort, having names they recognized around them as well as attracting fellow country men with place names they, too, recognized.

While researching, I find that I start to question the information I

find. While looking up local creeks and rivers, most names and facts are repeated: Goldie Creek, named after Thomas Goldie who was the first Gold Commissioner in the district in 1896; Sinclair Pass, Sinclair Creek, Sinclair Canyon and Sinclair Hot Springs (now Radium Hot Springs) are named after James Sinclair, an explorer who traveled through the valley in 1841 and 1854.

Then there are the names that take more searching and weighing of the sources to find out which is the right information. Toby Creek, in one source, reads “the creek is named after a physician of Colville, Washington said to be the first of his profession to visit the district about 1864.” Another source reads: “originally named ‘Nelson’s Rivulet’ in 1807 by David Thompson. Later changed to present name after Dr. D.Y. Toby, who was in charge of U.S. Army Post at Fort Caldwell. Reported to have spent the winter of 1856 placer mining on the creek.”

Which one is correct? I will be looking into this one and if I find something I will let you know.

Keep garbage away from bears WildSafeBC

By Andrea Smillie WildSafeBC Co-ordinator WildSafeBC works in conjunction with local governments to improve garbage disposal in the Columbia Valley. Some communities offer curbside pickup, and others require households to take their garbage to the refuse transfer station. No matter what community you live in, it is important to keep your garbage stored in an area that isn’t accessible to wildlife.

The RDEK has installed gates on refuse transfer stations to keep bears from getting in and becoming trapped, so

please be sure to close these gates when you are done emptying your garbage.

If you are in Invermere and leaving the area before pickup day, take your garbage to the refuse transfer station on your way out of town.

If you’ve noticed a yellow sticker on your garbage bin, it’s because WildSafeBC, with support from the District of Invermere, is trying to remind you that your garbage should not be out before the morning it gets picked up.

This is because it is a significant attractant for bears — black bears getting into garbage is the number one reason for calls to the Conservation Officer Service in B.C.!

Salmon fest is back

By Breanne Massey Pioneer Staff The cultural significance of the salmon in the Columbia River’s history will be highlighted in the Columbia Valley when the fifth annual Columbia Salmon Festival is held between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. at Kinsmen Beach on Saturday, September 12th.

“The salmon festival is basically to raise awareness about the species we lost from the Columbia River nearly 80 years ago due to the damns,” said Mark Thomas, event organizer. “We want to raise awareness (about) our efforts to restore those salmon. It’s not only for First Nations — once the salmon are back, it’s going to add life to the whole Basin.”

The landmark celebration will begin with a canoe brigade arriving at Kinsmen Beach around 10:45 a.m. if Mother Nature co-operates for an exchange ceremony. The start of the festival may be postponed until the end of the day to accommodate a late brigade arrival if weather conditions are poor.

Cranbrook gears up for 2016 airshow

By Kevin Nimmock Pioneer Staff Next year, many of North America’s best airshow pilots will excite an estimated crowd of 10,000 in Cranbrook for the Canadian Rockies International Airshow.

Organizers held a preview on August 17th to promote the show both to locals and media members.

Several of next year’s aerial performers were on hand for the preview, including cast members of Discovery Channel’s Airshow.

“We have a great lineup of airplanes planned,” said Thomas Murphy, a member of the Canadian Rockies International Airshow Society. “We have around 11 aerial performers, including the Snowbirds, a McDonnell Douglas F-18 Hornet pilot, the SkyHawks and some civilian performers.”

When planning the event, Mr. Murphy said he and his team have tried to book a wide variety of performers to keep crowds engaged. In addition to the mix of civilian and military flyers, spectators will get to see the SkyHawks, Canada’s only military parachute demonstration team. Organizers have also ordered a rocket car, which will race one of the jets down the airport’s runway.

“Airshows are super fun and the whole family can get involved,” Mr. Murphy said. “They give people the opportunity to see something they do not normally get to see.”

Stefan Trischuk, one of the performers excited to fly in Cranbrook next year, is Canada’s youngest professional stunt pilot. In his Pitts Special X2C Biplane, Mr. Trischuk has taken the flying world by storm in only his second year on the circuit. On Airshow, he is referred to as “the rookie.”

“Growing up, I was making kites and those little garbage bag parachutes,” Mr. Trischuk said. “I was just trying to get off the ground. This is all I have ever wanted to do.”

Like many pilots participating in Cranbrook’s airshow, Mr. Trischuk had to fight a significant financial barrier to pursue his dreams. He said the reason most airshow performers are ex-military or retired airline pilots is that you have to buy your own plane and pay thousands of dollars for official certification.

“I figured out I would have to work outside of aviation to do this dream,” he said. “I got a job in a potash plant, working 3,500 feet underground operating mining equipment, but I was able to afford this career. It is a big investment, so you have to jump with both feet.”

Now that he has jumped, Mr. Trischuk said he has landed in a lifestyle that allows him to have an absolute blast at work, soaring over crowds of thrilled spectators. He said he will bring an extra aspect of excitement to the lineup in Cranbrook.

“An airplane like this was purposefully built to do more tumbling manoeuvres, so it rolls very quickly,” Mr. Trischuk said. “The jets are cool and loud, but this is a little bit more fun.”

The two-day airshow starts on Friday, August 5th, 2016 with a twilight show.

“When the F-18 does its passes you will get to see the beautiful fire behind it from its after-burners, so that is really special,” Mr. Murphy said, adding he expects the twilight show to draw spectators to the main event the next day.

Mr. Murphy said he hopes the airshow will be one of the biggest events in the Kootenays next summer.

“We are hoping to attract a lot of people to not just Cranbrook, but the whole region,” he said. “We hope to get people to come here and see what a beautiful place this is.”

Hockey season begins

By Breanne Massey Pioneer Staff The Windermere Valley Minor Hockey Association (WVMHA) is recruiting hockey players for its upcoming season.

Registration for players will be ongoing and available on the new WVMHA website, according to coach Daphne Neal.

“Registration is ongoing,” said Ms. Neal. “Players or parents can register their child online.”

Ms. Neal added the website would be the hockey community’s main source for information and updates about the league this season.

“I know most places can do that nowadays, but we’ve finally made the jump, and it’s something we’d definitely like to highlight,” she said. “You’ll be able to find out ice schedules, tournaments and practice times. It’s going to be kept really up to date with a really user-friendly platform.”

Ice time for players ranging from Peewee to Midget will begin during the week of September 7th. The Initiation and Atom leagues will hit the ice during the

week of September 14th.

“It starts around $165, but goes up every year after that,” explained Ms. Neal.

“We need people registered a couple of days before (practice starts).”

She is pleased to see there is no shortage of interest in Canada’s favourite pastime, which drew a crowd for pre-season shinny last week.

There will be new programs for the roster added to the schedule this season.

“We also have a new program that’s going to be starting up called the Bauer First Shift Program,” she said. “It’s going to be a program that begins in October for kids who have never tried hockey before. It’s a six-week program that includes ice time, instruction and equipment — but people are going to have to stay tuned for more information on it because it’s a national program that we’ve jumped on board with.”

Changes to foreign exchange policy On August 11th, China surprised global financial markets by changing their foreign exchange policy. What are these changes, and what do they mean for China and for the rest of the world?

Former regime The People’s Bank of China (PBoC) has long held a soft peg currency regime, under which the Chinese yuan to U.S. dollar exchange rate (CNY/USD) was allowed to trade within a two per cent range of a midpoint set by the PBoC at the start of each day, called the “daily fixing.”

This system allowed the Chinese government some latitude to remain competitive as an export nation by maintaining a moderately undervalued currency relative to its trade partners. It also helped to insure the currency against wild swings, therefore eliminating some of the exchange rate risk for Chinese exporters, importers and their trading partners.

New regime Going forward, the PBoC implemented wider trading bands, and is allowing their currency value be influenced more heavily by movements of other major currencies, the CNY’s previous day’s closing value and supply and demand conditions.

Unlike other major global currencies, however, the CNY will not yet be allowed to “float.”

The PBoC considers the recent changes to be the first step towards that goal.

Why did they change?

Firstly, the PBoC wants the CNY to be included in the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) Special Drawing Rights (SDR) currency basket, which includes the U.S. dollar, British pound, Japanese yen and the Euro.

To be an SDR currency, the IMF requires that the currency be freely usable, which means that even though China is the world’s second largest economy, the CNY does not qualify.

Even with new reforms, the CNY is still a long way from being a reserve currency, let alone challenging the US as the dominant reserve currency.

Secondly, while the PBoC says the move was not to improve their international competitiveness, it’s been widely reported that their economy is slowing, while their dollar has remained fairly stable.

Allowing more market influences may seem counterintuitive, given China’s long-standing policy to devalue the CNY relative to the USD. If the PBoC wanted to devalue the yuan, they will buy US dollars and sell CNY. To appreciate the CNY, they would take the reverse approach. This, coupled with export activity, are major reasons why China holds such large reserves of U.S. currency, currently around $3.7 trillion.

In fact, due to many factors including declining exports (recently reported as an 8.3 per cent year-on-year decrease in July), the IMF reported in May that the CNY was fairly valued for the first time in more than a decade.

Other valuation models estimated that the CNY could be as much as five to 10 per cent overvalued just prior to the new fixing regime.

Implications Stock markets hate surprises, so as expected, the Chinese announcement invoked a negative reaction for risk assets. Coupled with other factors, including an implied lower demand for commodities, world equities collectively fell as far as nine per cent in the two weeks following the announcement.

The timing and swiftness of the move also caused concern that the Chinese economy could be even weaker than imagined. On August 24th, the PBoC cut interest rates for the fifth time since November, as well as their bank’s reserve requirements. This is expected to inject about 105 billion into China’s banking system for new loans.

Further Chinese currency devaluation could make it more difficult for the U.S. to raise interest rates, as this would drive their dollar up, attracting investors to their bond market, but also making their economy less competitive.

Thankfully, Canada is not expected to be greatly affected by these changes in the short term, aside from a marginally diminished U.S. economy and slightly lower commodity prices. Over the long term, a more free-floating Chinese currency is expected to be positive for world economies, including Canada.

Local landscaper Ray Vowels has started a new business with a sustainable twist.

After returning to the landscaping industry after a hiatus of several years, Mr. Vowels decided to launch Vital Grounds Land Design after seeing a new niche, as well as a critical need, here in the valley.

“Aesthetics are what you see when you step back, and with my new company you definitely get that, but landscaping can — and should — go much deeper than that, and that’s what I’m doing with Vital Grounds. We make landscapes that are not just attractive but also have elements of true sustainability built in them,” said Mr. Vowels, adding “this can mean anything from basic rain water harvesting techniques to creating a selfsufficient oasis where you can grow your own food, all while having that oasis practical, low maintenance, and aesthetically pleasing.”

Mr. Vowels takes a hands-on approach to his work, and he sees a lot of practical

application here in the valley for his approach. “Take the rainfall this year - bigger rain events with less of it being absorbed. This general lack of water absorption is having impacts on both the ecosystem (fires) down to the level of people’s own backyards and the water restrictions.

Lack of soil is also a big issue here. Some of the techniques I use don’t just amend the soil, but also build it quickly. I also mitigate the damaging effects that storm water has on natural and structural assets by strategically incorporating them into a design.”

Although landscaping typically involves making a surface as good as it can be, Mr. Vowels likes to get as deep under the ground as he can. “So much sits below the surface, in the last few years there’s been an explosion in the science of soil. It’s time for the landscaping industry to tap into that. Organic matter in soil, for instance, can hold up to 10 times its weight in water. That’s significant when you’re looking at trying to mitigate the impact of heavy rainfall events, flooding or drought. Much of the soil we have here in the valley is mainly a silty soil with little to no organic matter, it’s thin, compact and becomes hydrophobic, - the water runs off rather than perking down. So when we landscape, we take that into consideration, we don’t just look at soil pH and colour, we look at its microbiology and see how we can create a healthy soil, resilient against disease, drought and compaction, thus making it more sustainable,” he said.

“The scope of what can be designed is vast, basically we’re incorporating the native ecosystem into our landscaping design rather than trying to fight against it,” said Mr. Vowels. “Water conservation is one of many principles I’ll be offering to the valley meeting the mandates of the future, it’s a great foundation for both a healthy business and a healthy community, all while ‘landscaping’” Mr. Vowels holds a Permaculture Design Certificate from Calgary-based Verge Permaculture. “There are a few things that could be done that would make a big difference and we’re hoping to point that out to council. We wanted to bring the spare wheelchair with us, just to give them a clear idea of what it’s like for users.”

Invermere councillor Justin Atterbury took a roll up the hill in the same location and nearly fell onto the grass.

“It’s interesting, but there are a lot of really simple, little things that we could do to make a huge difference,” said Mr. Atterbury about the tour. “A lot of it was just an oversight, but now it’s been pointed out to us, so we can do something about it because a lot of them aren’t huge costs, but it would make (accessing Kinsmen Beach and the nearby walking trails) so much better.”

The Invermere council members, including councillor Al Miller, took stock of the fact that the paved trails at Kinsmen Beach do not easily allow people with mobility issues access to the concession, the beach or the trail leading up to the CPR Lodge, and that there wasn’t a safe route to get across the nearby gravel roads that avoids traffic in the parking lot.

“It’s quite a long way to go,” said Ms. Hawes, gesturing at the pathway some people are forced to take when there are mobility issues. “And it’s pretty hard to find a nice space to spend time alone if you want to go somewhere that isn’t congested with traffic and be out in nature.”

Mr. Taft and Mr. Atterbury anticipate the information presented during Ms. Hawes’ wheelchair accessible tour of Kinsmen Beach could set the tone for what improvements council can plan for during the September and October budget discussions.

“It looks like a little bit of paving and some asphalt would improve access quite a bit,” said Mr. Taft. “It should all be finalized by December.”

Ms. Hawes plans to work with council to help upgrade the Kinsmen Beach area.

“We’ll compile a list of recommendations, and send them into council formally as a report or letter at some point,” explained Ms. Hawes. “People who do have trouble getting around have trouble getting from the parking area (at Kinsmen Beach) over to the beach or over to the Pynelogs area.”

Rod and Gun Club enables Abel Creek fish

By Kevin Nimmock Pioneer Staff Dedicated members of the Lake Windermere District Rod and Gun Club arrived early on August 24th to a spot along Walker Lane just off 13th Avenue in Invermere near club member Buzz Harmsworth’s home.

The men, sporting plastic boots and work pants, got out of their vehicles, surveyed the portion of Abel Creek they had come to restore, and got to work.

Throughout the day, the club executed their Abel Creek Fishery Enhancement Project, which has been in the works for two years. The goal was to clear a half-century-old structure that was blocking the creek, which was impeding the ability of Kokanee salmon and Rainbow trout to use the entire length of the creek, which continues up alongside Johnson Road, effectively as a spawning ground. “(The barrier) was there before the Second World War,” Mr. Harmsworth said. “The shed on the property was occupied by a veteran from the war.”

Currently, fish spawn below the barrier in the 885 metres of stream accessible to them, but they are blocked from accessing another 3,300 metres of usable habitat above the barrier. According to club president Rick Hoar, removing the barrier will increase fish population.

“Hopefully the Kokanee will come up past the old blockade,” Mr. Hoar said.

“The Rainbow certainly will, because we have seen them at the edges of the site.”

“The fish have different preferences in terms of stream gradients. Kokanee are a low stream gradient fish, so they like the bottom end where it is nice and flat. Whether they want to go all the way along the creek or not, we will see, but we wanted to give them a chance.”

Throughout the long day of work, the team was able to remove the barrier, thanks in part to funding from the Regional District of East Kootenay’s Kootenay Conservation Program ($5,000), and the Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Recreational Fisheries Conservation Partnerships Program ($11,000).

“Once we had the money, we had to get the water permits, which we finally received just a week ago,” Mr. Hoar said.

“It all went together really well.”

Mr. Hoar said a conservation project

like this one was a no-brainer for his club to pursue.

“Our mandate is to promote wildlife re-habitation and to maintain habitat quality,” Hoar said. “The club is 96 years old and we have won national awards for our projects over the years.”

The conductor for the day’s work was Alan Bates, an engineer who specializes in hydrology, channel geomorphology and river-based projects. He said the Abel Creek Fishery Enhancement Project was aided by the natural conditions of the creek.

“It came together better than expected because there is good material down below,” Mr. Bates said. “You never know what is there until you start digging, but it is cleaning up nicely. There is clean gravel and rock as opposed to old mucky stuff.”

Using his best guess, Mr. Bates said the old barrier was probably an irrigation dam at some point.

“Hopefully we are making things better than they were,” he said. “I am glad we could clean up and restore things to their natural state a bit.”

For the Rod and Gun Club, the other important aspect of the project is education, which is an ongoing goal.

“The school teachers normally bring all the little people and they go all the way down to the lake to see the fish,” Mr. Harmsworth said. “Since this is in place, they can now come up here for viewing and learning.”

At the site of the old barrier, the club has erected a sign outlining the area’s significance for Kokanee salmon and Rainbow trout. Mr. Hoar said the sign is just the first step of what he hopes to establish to share information about local wildlife and the importance of protecting the valley’s ecosystem.

“We always thought about creating educational signs right from the lake to Abel Creek,” Mr. Hoar said. “We think this is a part of teaching the whole green process of getting the creek back on track.”

Mr. Hoar said he is extremely happy with the work that has been done, but he knows a project like this is never quite completed.

“Next, we will put in some vegetation,” he said. “We will be seeding the ground in the fall, then we will just continue to monitor it.”

Tips for spring flowering bulbs The Green File

By Mark Cullen Pioneer Columnist It is time to get to the investment that gardeners make this time of year in a great looking garden NEXT SPRING. We plant spring flowering bulbs like tulips, daffodils, crocus and hyacinths to wake up the garden and give us a jolt of colour come April and May. Planting spring bulbs now will reward you substantially in months down the road. All you need is some patience, to invest in quality bulbs this time of year in the first place (look for ‘top sized’) and to prepare the planting area well.

Golden rule: the bigger the better Tulips, for example, are graded in the Netherlands according to their circumference. A “10 plus” bulb is 10 centimetres in circumference and is considered small where most tulips are concerned (the exceptions being the botanical tulips, which are small by nature). A truly great performing tulip is 12-plus centimetres. I have seen some Darwin Hybrids (the classic of all tulips) sized at 14 centimetres.

Remember this: the bigger the bulb, the stronger the plant and the more bloom per bulb. This is also true of amaryllis, by the way.

For daffodils, the size is measured according to the number of growing points on each bulb — these are called “noses.” A two-nosed King Alfred daffodil is average, a three-nose fabulous and a four-nose almost unheard of. From each “nose” grows a stem and a flower or cluster of flowers.

Tip: You will know the true colour of hyacinths by the colour of the skin on the bulb. Hyacinths are the most fragrant of all spring flowering bulbs.

Planning your bulb garden Most Canadian home gardeners will dig up tired annuals and plant among existing perennials and shrubs to make room for spring flowering bulbs, rather than devote a complete garden space to planting. Parks and Recreation departments take the opposite approach, which is one reason why I like to follow my own advice where planning my bulb planting is concerned: the idea is to

mimic Mother Nature.

The effect of planting random clusters of bulbs in your garden is to create a look that gives the impression that you didn’t actually have anything to do with it. “Hey, what do you know?” you might exclaim to your visitors come spring, “tulips coming up all over the place. Who would have thought?”

It is great fun to drop early flowering narcissus (small daffodils) or crocus in your lawn. Certain varieties that are “suitable for forcing” will come up for years to come and will finish flowering before the first cut of your lawn. Ask your retailer for the best varieties for this purpose.

Tip: To get a truly natural, random, scattered effect from your bulbs, grab a handful of them, turn your back on the planting area and gently toss them over your shoulder. Plant them where they lie. This works best in the lawn.

To plant natural looking clusters of bulbs in your garden, I recommend that you dig a hole three times as deep as the bulbs are thick (measured from tip to bottom). Layer the bottom of the hole with a centimetre or two of quality soil or triple mix.

Press the bulbs into the new soil with a half twist to give them firm contact with the soil. Fill in the hole with the original soil that you dug out (if it is reasonable quality) or fill with triple mix.

Water your bulbs thoroughly Stick a plant label in the ground above the newly planted bulbs with the name of the species and variety (ie. tulip, Darwin Hybrid and Oxford). This will not only give the ID of the bulb, but it will remind you of where you planted next time you go digging in your garden.

The payback for all of your trouble is the exciting emergence of your new bulbs through the surface of the soil come spring. It is hard to imagine how much fun this is, right now in the fall, with a full gardening season just behind us. But take my word for it — when you see the performance of your bulbs next spring you will not regret your investment even if it meant raiding your “rainy day” fund to do it.

Fall behind, or spring ahead?

Submitted by Lin Egan Winderberry Nursery and Edibles Farm It seems like a good valley conversation can always have a little bit of weather in it and although I hate to stereotypically talk about the weather, gardening through the different systems we’ve experienced this season proved to be very interesting.

From an intensely hot spring and early summer and then, recently, the mixed bag of smoke and cooling temperatures, our gardens have responded accordingly. With the early heat, some crops and flowers bloomed and produced earlier, while others slowed right down due to heat and drought.

Now is a great time to access your own garden successes and failures and plan ahead to the next gardening season. While you are still harvesting and enjoying the fruits of your labour, make some notes on how you might have improved, whether it be through garden layout, watering practices or soil conditions.

Consider doing a few essential things to your garden before putting it to sleep for the winter. Working in compost, manures and peat moss in the fall will give your garden more ability to hold moisture over the winter.

Mulching your flower beds will also retain moisture in the ground.

If your garden goes to bed wellhydrated in the fall and can stay that way throughout the winter, chances are your trees, shrubs and particularly your perennials will wake up healthy and happy in the spring.

This past weekend, two of the Edibles Farm team, Patsy Lussier and Ellen Wilker, hosted a delicious harvest dinner in our greenhouse. The intention was to bring awareness to their passion about local farming and food production. Both of them are travelling this fall — Patsy to Italy to participate in a conference called We Feed the Planet with Slow Food Canada’s Youth, and Ellen to Costa Rica to manage a farm project for several months.

They will both be representing our community with their knowledge, work ethics and vision about how our local and global food systems need to work together.

It was a great gathering and very gratifying to see the community come together around food, good company and music, and to deepen our understanding of what Patsy and Ellen (and many like them) are working towards.

Famous soil scientist coming to valley

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff A world-renowned soil scientist is coming to the valley, and local residents will have a chance to get dirty in corresponding soil workshops.

Elaine Ingham will be coming to the Kootenay region to give a talk at the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) conference with the Southern Interior Waste Managers Association in Cranbrook on Thursday, September 17th and will then be heading up to Invermere to give a presentation, hosted by the Groundswell Network Society, on the concept of the living soil food web at the David Thompson Secondary School theatre later that evening from 6 to 9 p.m.

“She’s a world leading expert on the topic of living soil and soil ecology. It’s her only trip to Canada this year, and she’s a pretty big deal, so we’re quite excited,” said Groundswell executive director Bill Swan. “The whole idea of living soil has really become a big deal in the last 10 years, and basically it involves looking at all the living organism in the soil and the relationships between them, instead of just looking at the top layers of soil and plants above it.”

The concept has wide applications in a

number of fields, said Mr. Swan.

“Living soil helps with agriculture, since good crops and health plants tend to come from good soil. So it helps produce more food; it helps retain more water; and it helps sequester carbon as well. It is useful not just in greenhouses and on farms, but also in public parks or on golf courses. As a concept, almost nobody was talking about living soil a decade ago, but now it’s everywhere.”

Ms. Ingham’s talk will touch on not just making good compost, but also on making compost tea and extracts, and will include a microscope-aided projector slideshow.

“These are all things we have the equipment to do here at Groundswell,” said Mr. Swan.

Although Ms. Ingham has to leave the next day, several of her top protégés from across Western Canada will be leading handson, all-day soil workshops — designed to give people practice in applying her principles — on Friday, September 18th as part of the society’s Soil and Sustainability Convention.

The workshops run from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and there are 125 total spots, half of which are already filled, according to Mr. Swan.

New group for foodies Submitted by the Columbia Valley Food Corridor Association The local food experience in the Columbia Valley is one of variety and delight. You can visit a coffee roaster, brewery, honey producer, organic farm, take a cooking class, visit a greenhouse, bake a pizza in a wood-fired oven, or buy your locally grown and produced meal at a fabulous farmers’ market. Together, these experiences form a vibrant local food economy that creates jobs, supports farmers, increases food security and builds a market for culinary tourism.

Over the past two years, a group of Columbia Valley residents passionate about local food have come together to form the Columbia Valley Food Corridor Association (CVFCA).

The CVFCA has created a constitution that encourages collaboration, as well as promotion, within agriculture to build a sustainable food system, promote growth and development with the food processing sector as well as encourage this valley to promote, prepare, sell and,

of course, celebrate our local foods.

Food is a fundamental factor in our valley lifestyle. From the economics of providing food to our population to creating jobs in the valley to setting up events to celebrate the seasons, it is one aspect of our economy that will always flourish. We all need to eat so let’s eat well, from our land with food made with our hands.

There is great opportunity within this valley we call home and by working together, more will get accomplished, providing us all with the lifestyle we wish to lead while getting our culinary scene more recognized in Canada.

Community composting is the way of the future Submitted by Bill Swan Groundswell Network Society The benefits of a win-win scenario are something most of us can appreciate so the possibility of a winwin-win-win should be outstanding!

This is precisely the potential that composting on a large scale here in the East Kootenays could provide us as individuals and as communities focused on solutions and opportunities associated with food, water, climate and economics.

Groundswell Network Society has been investing in research and action on community composting in Invermere and adjacent Regional District areas.

The 70,000-plus litres of organic material we have composted over the past three seasons demonstrates the viability of composting at this scale. More importantly we have confirmed and engaged the very large public interest in organic waste management using composting.

What we’ve really learned, though, is that it is time to take it all up a notch — a big notch! “Too expensive” you say?

The link between compost and agriculture is an obvious benefit that most of us appreciate. Organic, rich soils produce healthy, nutrient-dense food that often requires lower to no inputs of costly fertilizer, chemical control agents and water.

Here in the region, our soils are very low in organic matter and this affects our ability to grow food.

Regional networks of farms and farmers can provide organic waste composting services that would otherwise go to the landfill.

Organic, rich, living soils abundant in microbial life also possess the physical structure and relationships to absorb and retain massive quantities of water to the benefit of agriculture, natural ecosystems, human communities and climate.

By massive quantities, we’re talking here about volumes of water equivalent to that found in large reservoirs and irrigation systems that cost far more to build and maintain than what investing in soil building through composting would cost.

On the climate front, removing organic waste from our landfills substantially reduces production of greenhouse gases (GHGs) like methane that is

30 times worse to our atmosphere and climate than CO2. It is estimated that landfills in Canada emit the equivalent GHGs of 24 million more vehicles on the road — almost one more car for every Canadian!

Organic waste on average constitutes one third of the waste we produce, collect, manage and landfill every day. In the East Kootenay, waste management is among the highest cost (tax-based) services we pay for.

So what will it take to turn our garbage into gold?

If we factor in the briefly described agricultural, water, climate and economic benefits of organic waste management and assign them a financial value, the “it’s too expensive” argument evaporates faster than water behind a California reservoir.

Gradually implementing a policy of zero organic waste in our East Kootenay landfills will take political leadership — that ultimately arises from all of us letting our leaders know what we want to see when it comes to our waste. It’s not only possible — it is well underway in other communities and regions that are realizing the win-win-win-win of large scale composting To join the Groundswell Community Composting Services program, visit www.groundswellnetwork.ca.

It is with deep heartfelt sorrow that we announce Derrick’s unexpected passing. Derrick was born and raised in Brockville, Ontario where he graduated from Thousand Islands Secondary School before moving to Edmonton where his daughter was born, then settling in the Columbia Valley to make it his forever home.

Derrick enjoyed spending his time with family and friends. He especially adored it when his granddaughter was at his side. He loved the outdoors; hunting, fishing, camping and quading. Derrick was a true outdoorsman. He was always up for an adventure.

Derrick will be remembered by his spouse; Ingrid Blatt; his daughter Lindsay Birtch (Joel); granddaughters Alexis and Aubrey; step son Jamie (Tarah); his mother Ruth Bois D Enghien; sisters Wendy (Bob), Laura (Dave) and Kim; brother Shawn and numerous friends. s obituary s BICKNELL, George Gordon 1930 – 2015

In the early afternoon of Tuesday, August 25th, 2015, George Gordon Bicknell passed away at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook at the age of 85 years. George was born in Russell, Manitoba on May 21, 1930.

In George’s youth, he worked for his father at a farm fuel distribution service in Russell. In the early 1950s he moved to Calgary and opened his own business which he ran for many years, Acme Aluminum Products. Dad also worked as a carpenter during these years. He loved sports of all kinds, but especially hockey, football, curling and snowmobiling. In later years, his main interest was fishing and golfing. He was very active in golf and played a game every day that he could.

In the 1970s, George bought a cabin on the shores of Lake Windermere but eventually decided to move permanently to the place he loved most, the Columbia Valley and Radium.

George is survived by four sons: Dean (Cathy), Rick (Rose), Colin (Annette) and John as well as his grandchildren: Michael (Shira), Kelly (Gordon), Jessie (Michael), Jenny (Scott) and Cory (Nancy) and three great-grandchildren: Emilia, Sadie and Austin. George was predeceased by the mother of his children; Doris, his daughter, Bonnie and one granddaughter Tera, two brothers; William and Don and his mother and dad, George and Anne Bicknell.

It is with deep appreciation and gratitude that we honor Stew’s unconditional love and steady presence in our lives and announce his peaceful passing on June 22, 2015 at 94 years of age. Stew is survived by daughter Valerie, son-in-law Norman, granddaughters Kwynn and Kelcey (Dave), great-granddaughter Ava, daughterin-law Cheri (Stu), granddaughters Jaime (Duncan), Madison (Catlin) and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased in 2008 by his son Warren, in 2009 by his wife of 64 years Arlene and brothers John in 1995 and Archie (Kayo) in March of 2015.

After 25 years of working in parts and sales and living in Calgary, Stew and Arlene retired to Fairmont where Stew took on the Campground Manager position with Fairmont Hot Springs for 10 years.

When Arlene passed in the spring of 2010, Stew moved into the Gardens where he lived for the following 6 years until his Parkinson’s increased needs and failing health pressed him into making the move to Residential Care at Ivy House in April of this year. He appreciated the kindness and the care he received in these facilities, often telling people that he was treated like a king.

Stew was an adored and beloved father, grandfather, father-in-law, uncle, friend and neighbour who was devoted to his relationships with his family and friends.

In honoring Stew’s wishes, there was no formal service or celebration of life. An informal gathering of family and friends will occur in mid-September.

Recipe Of The Week GRILLED RATATOUILLE BOATS

2 Zucchini, halved 3 tbsp Olive Oil 1 Onion, chopped 2 cloves Garlic, minced 1 Eggplant, cubed

2 Tomatoes, chopped ¼ cup Parsley, chopped Salt and pepper 1/3 cup Mozzarella Cheese, shredded

Scoop flesh from the zucchini to create boats and reserve.

Heat grill to medium-high.

In a skillet heat 1 tbsp. oil over medium heat; add onion, cook 5 minutes; stir in garlic; cook 1 minute.

Add remaining oil, eggplant and zucchini flesh; cover and cook 8 minutes.

Add tomatoes and cook, stirring, until thickened, 5 minutes.

Stir in parsley; season with salt and pepper.

This program, carried out twice yearly, is necessary to maintain the quality of our water supply. Shuswap look ahead

Discus fish care and prayer

By Rev. David Morton, Associate Pastor, St. Peter’s Lutheran Mission of Invermere Wild Discus fish live in the quiet tropical freshwater of the Amazon River.

Pictured are my Discus fish in my 85-gallon planted tank (captive bred by a breeder in Calgary).

Discus are beautiful and interactive. However, their care is “high maintenance” when compared to the usual tropical freshwater fish found at your local fish store.

For instance, two to three times a week, a 40 per cent change in the water volume is recommended for Discus, compared to weekly water changes of 25 per cent of the water volume for most tropical freshwater fish.

Toxic nitrates build up in the tank and, if not removed, slowly poison the fish.

Plants absorb some nitrates, but the only effective treatment is removal through water changes. Water maintenance is a simple chore, but a key to healthy fish.

Our relationship with the Lord is similar. Consider the words of this hymn: “What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear, what a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!”

Maintaining our friendship with Jesus is not as

simple as claiming “I believe” without a second thought.

Jesus’ friendship is to be treated as more than a casual acquaintance. He is our Saviour. Our relationship with Him and our maintainance of that relationship is vital for our well-being. Like the toxic nitrates in my fish tank that have to be removed from their environment, our sin and guilt can only be expunged by giving them to the Lord.

The hymn of Joseph M. Scriven goes on to say, “Oh, what peace we often forfeit. Oh, what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.”

Prayer is like a water change for the soul — the deeper and more often we do it, the better off we’ll be.

His death on the cross saves me from my sin and grants me eternal life. Upon confessing to Jesus, we can then, with His help, turn our lives around (repentance) although we will always have to look to Him again and again.

A pretzel pick Audrey Mantyka recently came into The Pioneer’s office with an interesting carrot that was pulled from Joe Fuller’s garden in the Toby Benches on August 20th. “ I just pulled it out,” she laughed. “It’s crazy!”

Joe’s son Daryl had planted the carrots and Andrey said Joe was always commenting they were too close together. Joe insisted Audrey bring it by the paper.

“I thought it was going to fall apart but it was so woven together,” she said.
