Massive Washington wildfire brings smoke to valley

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff The thick smoky haze hanging over the Columbia Valley, and almost the entire Kootenay region, throughout the past week is the result of the enormous Stickpin wildfire in northern Washington state.

The fire, which has been burning just south of B.C’s Boundary region (Grand Forks), was almost 20,000 hectares by The Pioneer’s Wednesday press time and is the biggest Washington state has ever recorded.

Initially, the fire had little effect on the Kootenay region, which lies immediately east of the Boundary region, but that changed last weekend when the wind began pushing the smoke this way.

“Winds are coming from the south and blowing to the east. We’ll continue to see smoke like this as long as that wind pattern prevails. It’s been quite bad,” said B.C. Southeast Fire Centre information officer Karlie Shaughnessy. “The fire is absolutely huge.”

The B.C. Wildfire Service has sent 33 firefighters to join the more than 120 Washington state firefighters currently battling the blaze. As of press time, the fire was 15 per cent contained and officials could not say how long the fire might burn.

However, if the wind changes directions, valley residents could easily see the smoke lift here, no matter what happens with the fire, according to Ms. Shaughnessy, although she did add that the wind pattern that’s bringing the smoke to the valley is completely normal and could stick around for some time.

Although the Upper Columbia Valley is inundated with smoke, there are actually few forest fires burning in the region. The lone exception was the comparatively tiny Soles Creek fire, which began just east of Highway 95 near Harrogate (south of Golden) on August 14th, and grew to four hectares before being fully contained by

The smoke has resulted in Interior Health and the provincial Ministry of Environment issuing a smoky skies advisory for the southern parts of both the Boundary and Kootenay regions. Such advisories are a new kind of advisory, and are a way for both organizations to increase awareness among the public when wildfire smoke reaches levels that may be of concern to human health.

The advisory issued for the Kootenay and Boundary regions recommends avoiding strenuous outdoor activities, and contacting your health care provider if you experience difficulty in breathing, chest pain or discomfort, and a sudden onset of coughing or irritation of airways. Exposure to the smoke is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly and those who have medical conditions such as diabetes, and lung or heart disease. The advisory also pointed out that air quality in any given area may still be poor, even if there is no visible smoke.

Between the dates of August 17th, 2015 and August 24th, 2015, the Columbia Valley Detachment responded to 103 calls for service. Six of these complaints were motor vehicle accidents.

A few files being submitted are as follows: • On Saturday, August 22nd at approximately 11:06 a.m., it was reported that an erratic driver had collided off-road at 10th Avenue and 4th Street in Invermere. The male had then taken off on foot, with no injuries to the driver evident according to witnesses. There were other calls for police service all linked as well to this incident and finally the male driver was located as a result of a “man down” complaint behind Columbia Gardens Village. The male was conscious on police arrival and was arrested for dangerous driving. It is believed that alcohol and drugs were involved. BC Ambulance was called to attend and transport the subject to hospital. The male was airlifted from Invermere Hospital to Kelowna General Hospital. The vehicle was impounded and this investigation is currently ongoing.

• On Saturday, August 22nd at approximately 7:35 p.m., Cpl. Ayers was flagged down south of Invermere and initiated a possible stolen vehicle investigation. A quick patrol was made north towards Radium and a lone Alberta registered rental vehicle was noted to be parked along one of the rest stops overlooking the Columbia Valley wetlands, along Radium Hill on Highway 93/95. Within a short while, a lone male appeared from somewhere below the bank. Upon initial contact, the male advised he was not associated with the vehicle and was waiting to be picked up, providing a name, later to be confirmed as false.

Confirmation was made with the rental company out of Edmonton, Alberta that the vehicle was stolen and had not been reported as of yet to law enforcement. A couple of clues with a quick search of the abandoned vehicle and the male was identified. The male was arrested for Posses-

sion Of Stolen Property Over $5,000 and Breach of a Recognizance stemming from an incident with the Edmonton Police Service. The male attempted to resist arrest, but the decision was made for him without further problems. Thanks to the BC Conservation Service as well as Club Towing for their watchful eyes. Pending Provincial Crown approval, the male will be attending court on October 6th to deal with charges.

• On Tuesday, August 18th, Cst. Reinburg was dispatched to a motorcycle MVI on Highway 93 at the entrance to Kootenay National Park. Ambulance and fire crews were on scene prior to police arrival. The male appeared to have lacerations on his arms and legs due to road rash, and there were witnesses to the accident where the motorbike had been behind a bus and, when attempting to pass the bus past the park gate entrance heading east, lost control of the bike and crashed into the westbound lane curbing. The rider was ejected off the bike and tumbled a few feet while the bike continued skidding onward approximately 80 feet through a turnabout spot. Cpl. Simpson attended the Invermere Hospital and formed grounds that the rider was under the influence of either alcohol or drugs. The rider was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition under Section 215 of the Motor Vehicle Act for alcohol, as well as a violation ticket for passing unsafely and crossing a double solid line. The bike was impounded.

• On Tuesday, August 18th at approximately 4:50 a.m., it was reported that a black 2008 Yamaha MT-01 had been stolen from his driveway and that the owner had heard his bike start up and be driven away. This theft occurred in the Indian Beach Estates area. The bike is unique, with an estimated value of $7,000. The owner did not have theft insurance on the bike and would appreciate any help from the public to have it located and returned to him. Anybody who has any knowledge of this theft, please contact the Columbia Valley RCMP directly or through Crime Stoppers.

• There have been a few incidents of business Break and Enters in the Fairmont area recently. The Columbia Valley RCMP are investigating these and have some leads, but any other information is always welcome.

He believes the problems that are being reported are largely related to alcohol, which ties into tourism.

“People come here to let their hair down and party,” said Mr. Shehovac. “They’ll come here and drive their golf carts on the highway and on the road, but they won’t do that where they come from. But for some reason, it’s OK to do that here in the valley.

“People think the laws are left at home, and come here to party, but that’s the price you pay for being a resort community.”

But the traffic accidents that have been reported have raised alarm bells for Mr. Shehovac.

“My message to the mayors and councils and to the people is that, unfortunately, these things happen where we get a fatality or a serious accident, and that scene becomes a crime scene that we (the police) have to protect,” he said. “While you’re sitting in line being frustrated with the wait, you’ve got to remember that somebody’s family and loved ones are having a bad day.”

In addition, Mr. Shehovac voiced concerns about the delays that come from accidents when traffic analysts are being called to attend Columbia Valley accidents from either Golden or Nelson. He used a motorcycle fatality that occurred on Radium Hill in early July as an example about the traffic congestion that happens during accidents.

“We don’t have traffic analysts at our finger tips, so we sometimes have to wait for them to get here,” concluded Mr. Shehovac, while adding he would be collecting information about the best strategy to manage what he calls crime scenes so that families get all of the details and commuting is manageable for others.

Staff Sgt. Marko Shehovac recently provided information about community policing to the councils of the three municipalities in the Columbia Valley.

In total, there were 815 calls for service recorded at the Columbia Valley RCMP Detachment this quarter, which accounts for April to June.

Last year, during the same time period, there were 631 calls for service recorded by the Columbia Valley RCMP Detachment.

There were 231 in the District of Invermere this quarter as opposed to 203 at the same time last quarter; there were 26 calls in Canal Flats this year as opposed to 19 at this time last year; and 84 calls for service compared to 54 in Radium Hot Springs last year during this quarter.

“Everywhere has gone up,” explained Mr. Shehovac when asked about the increasing numbers of calls. “It’s been a busier summer for traffic and people coming to the valley, especially the last long weekend.”

He added that, in all of the years he has been serving the Columbia Valley, the ramifications of long weekends have increased the demand for a strong police presence to support the community and promote safety.

“It’s been hectic,” he said, noting there is an extra $9,000 for seasonal policing that will be used for extra patrols. “Other than that, there’s no extra manpower. We just have to run from call to call. There are no extra bodies for us.”

However, the Columbia Valley RCMP Detachment is not understaffed, according to Mr. Shehovac.

Historical Lens

By Kevin Nimmock Pioneer Staff As September creeps closer, it’s time to head back to school. For me, school is in Ottawa at Carleton University, where I study journalism and political science. Unfortunately, this means leaving the valley after four months of living in Athalmer and working for The Pioneer and Valley Echo.

Both professionally and personally, I have learned a ton this summer. To start, my job at the paper was my first (real) chance to be a reporter. I worked on the editorial side of the office with Steve, Breanne and Nicole, who all took time out of their often insanely busy schedules to give me tips and tricks of the trade. For that, I am extremely grateful.

I would also like to thank the entire team at the papers for being so welcoming. Particularly, a shout-out to publisher Dean Midyette for always having a one-liner or a witty pun for every situation. One time, Breanne asked him to come up with a title for a photo page about roller disco and he easily produced this gem: “Having a (disco) ball.”

So yeah, working in the office was a thrill. I came into this job unsure if I wanted to be a journalist after graduating from school this coming April, or if I wanted to sell my soul and become a lawyer. My time in this role convinced me that this is the right field for me. Coming out of this job, I am far more confident in my future plans than I was four months ago.

Though I vacationed in the valley regularly as a kid, I had never spent considerable time here. Now, I can safely say I have been inside every shop in Invermere, Fairmont and Canal Flats, and Radium is next on the list when I return.

After just a short time here, I feel connected to this community, which is a testament to how friendly the locals are.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt to live in a place where you can constantly be floored by the surrounding beauty.

The mountains have never gotten old for me. I think my favourite view is of the wetlands area a kilometre or two outside of Canal Flats as the sun sets over the mountain peaks. Best mountain range: the Purcells, but notable mention to the Rockies (tight race).

But really, there are so many things to see here, so I will have to keep exploring every time I come to visit.

Grandfather golfing stokes memories Dear Editor: With respect to the historical picture on page 6 of the April 3rd issue, I wish to advise that the person putting on the green is my grandfather, William Walter Taynton. This picture was taken by Ernie Fisher and it would be almost on the sight of where the old CPR building is now.

I never did ask him if he made the putt, but am sure he did. I am impressed with the “dress code” of golfers in that time.

Perfect day for the third annual Invermere Musicfest Dear Editor: The third annual Invermere MusicFest (IMF) was held last Saturday at the Kinsmen Beach Greenspace… and what a festival it was!

The beautiful sunny day impressed the nine bands from across the country that performed throughout the day and into the evening.

I heard one of the band members say this was his favourite festival and was so impressed by the beauty of the Columbia Valley!

CV Arts and the IMF Committee, which organized the festival, are very pleased with the variety and talent of the musicians, the number of people who attended the Fest, and the overall feel of the event. It really was a perfect day!

Major upgrades in store for Tilley Memorial Park

By Kevin Nimmock Pioneer Staff Thanks to funding from local and federal organizations, the Village of Canal Flats is now in the process of planning a variety of major upgrades to Tilley Memorial Park.

On July 29th, Western Economic Diversification Canada, a branch of the Government of Canada, announced it would be providing $85,000 for Tilley Memorial Park upgrades as part of the Canada 150 Infrastructure Program.

Days later, Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) announced $42,500 worth of funding, leaving the village with $72,500 to pay from tax dollars to foot the budgeted $200,000 bill.

“Tilley Memorial Park is the Crown Jewel of our community and this funding will help us make necessary improvements to our beach for the benefit of locals and visitors alike,” mayor Ute Juras said.

Chief administrative officer Brian Woodward said he is not done applying for funding to further save the village money. Mr. Woodward has recently sent an application to Southern Interior Development Initiative Trust asking for $25,000, which would lower the taxpayer bill to $47,500.

“Tilley Memorial Park is always high on council’s

priority list... however, we always hope that improvements do not have to be funded by the taxpayers alone,” Ms. Juras said. “It is always great getting funding from multiple sources.”

In originally applying for the funding, Mr. Woodward created a breakdown of where the money would go. Ultimately, after council consultation, it was deduced that upgrades would occur to six key areas of Tilley Memorial Park.

Thirty thousand dollars will be spent on three new docks. Mr. Woodward said that, currently, boaters can be stuck waiting up to two hours to get out on the water during busy weekends.

“More docks will allow better timing for people to load and unload their boats,” he said.

An additional $30,000 will be spent to replace the park’s two outhouses with washrooms. To support the washrooms, sewer facilities will be built for an additional $30,000. According to Mr. Woodward, having actual washrooms will fix another current logistical problem.

“There will be enough room so that people can change since there are not changing rooms at this point, which is pretty essential,” Mr. Woodward said.

For $10,000, the village will complete the ongoing table building project. Mr. Woodward said there are five more tables to build and another five that need

to be upgraded.

The park’s play area will undergo a significant improvement with a quarter of the total project’s budget.

To complete this part of the project, council and community members will join forces to create a joint committee, which will decide what is needed to improve the experiences of children at the park.

“We just installed a new dock in the play area,” Mr. Woodward said. “There is only four or five feet of water, so the kids can jump off the dock, but quite a few parents have asked for something more.”

Finally, $50,000 will be dedicated to improving parking, which Mr. Woodward said has been a significant obstacle in the past.

“The parking upgrade is a major overall review of the entire parking area, which will help the local community by a substantial amount, because on busy weekends, all of the parking stalls get filled and all of the trailer stalls get filled,” Mr. Woodward said.

To meet the conditions set out by the Canada 150 Infrastructure Program, all upgrades must be completed by March 2018. Ms. Juras said the upgrades will be significant and noticeable to anyone who has visited Tilley Memorial Park in the past.

“The improvements will benefit both locals and visitors as they will make use of the park more comfortable and enjoyable,” Ms. Juras said.

Flower beds flourish

By Breanne Massey Pioneer Staff The budding blossoms of annual and perennial flowers around town have brightened up the summer in Invermere with a flurry of colours from the rainbow.

“I think a lot of our success is determined by the weather,” said Kassie Colonna, who helps maintain the flower beds with other District of Invermere staff for the summer. “We’ve had a really good season this year. It’s been hot and it’s been raining a lot. And you can only fertilize after it rains because it doesn’t burn the plants. And then we’ll get a week of heat and then it rains then we fertilize in heat, and it’s really good for them.”

The District of Invermere approved the $79,000 gardening program to revitalize the downtown core of the community, according to chief administrative officer Chris Prosser, who noted the Cenotaph project was not included in this budget.

The self-proclaimed flower girls consider their work experience a great way to spend the summer. Their green-thumbed responsibilities, which began in May and will wrap up when they return to school in the fall, are receiving rave reviews.

“They’re the same plants as last year.

They’re just fuller, they’ve had a longer lasting season,” explained Ms. Colonna.

“We’ve also been able, because it’s been raining more, to maintain them more.

We’ve been weeding more and pruning more so they come back fuller.”

“Something that I really enjoy about this job is that we get a lot of gratitude for the stuff that we do,” she said. “We always have people stopping and thanking us in the street, or telling us that we do a good job, so it’s a really positive environment.”

District gardener Olivia Rad returned to the community flower beds this summer after completing a two-month contract with the district last summer.

“I didn’t get to see everything grow, but this year, I got to see it from start to finish,” said Ms. Rad. “It was really enjoyable.”

She finds the opportunity to work outdoors both informative and enjoyable. The duo have been making memories while getting their hands dirty.

“There are a lot of perennials and annuals,” said Ms. Rad, noting a wide variety of flowers with unique colour combinations were planted.

“We have lots of petunias because petunias are heartier and they flower for a long time,” added Ms. Colonna. “Snaps are good, because they’re a little more maintenance, but they come back. They have three flowering sessions. Then, we really like the rutabagas and dinner plate dahlias and peonies. The peonies bloom earlier and they’re a statement flower.”

But the sunflowers remain Ms. Colonna’s favourite because they’re big and bright.

“The cannas are the big ones in the middle,” she added, noting they’re almost twice the size of last year. “The pots (in front of Valley Foods) fill with water so when it gets hot, it’s like tropical conditions.”

Shuswap fight to keep ancient language alive

Invermere will receive $85,988 from the provincial government to support tourism infrastructure and amenities. The funding comes from the Resort Municipality Initiative (RMI), which is providing $10.5 million to 14 communities across the province. The province has given Invermere just under $1.5 million for tourism since 2009. The money has led to the creation and

development of many new amenities and services.

“In the case of the District of Invermere, we have been able to complete entrance and gateway signage, construct a year-round concession and washroom building at our beach park, completely re-do and expand two parks and public gathering places in our downtown core, as well as annually support a very busy and popular shuttle bus linking Invermere and Panorama Mountain Resort,” mayor Gerry Taft said in a press release.

He will be in attendance for the opening reception this evening (Friday, August 28th) from 5 to 8 p.m. Alex will also be doing a painting demonstration on Saturday, August 29th from noon to 4 p.m.

Alex Fong is a renowned watercolour artist whose trademark is the whimsical “confetti” dots liberally scattered throughout his paintings. Whether he is painting cows, penguins, moose, quail or his trademark chickadees, Fong’s sense of fun and joy is apparent in every painting.

He uses unusually vibrant colour in his pieces and frequently varnishes his watercolours, maintaining their vivid and dramatic visual impact.

Since Alex Fong is one of the Artym’s most popular artists, it only makes sense to combine his visit with a “People’s Choice” contest: there will be a variety of paintings on the walls, and everyone who comes through the door will have the opportunity to vote for which piece they feel will make the best art card. The top five pieces will be tallied, and will be made into art cards available at the Artym this fall.

New radio station comes to East Kootenay

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff The Columbia Valley’s radio dial is about to get a whole lot more exciting in coming weeks with the launch of a new radio station here in the East Kootenay.

Lethbridge-based Clear Sky Radio Inc. started up 107 Summit FM — which has headquarters in Cranbrook — earlier this month and it has been testing with musiconly programming for about a week. The station broadcasts throughout the East Kootenay and here in Invermere the frequency is 107.7 FM. “We’re really excited to be here,” said station manager Melissa Hamm. “We play adult contemporary music and we thought there was a gap in the market for that in the East Kootenay. We saw that Invermere doesn’t get many radio signals and though we’d go there too.”

The testing, which is mandatory under Canadian broadcasting law, will go for about three weeks, after which the station plans to move to full programming, including news broadcasting and a morning, mid-day and afternoon show.

“We’re aiming for September 10th or 11th to be going full speed with our news and the shows,” said Ms. Hamm. “During the testing, we’ve seen the frequency cutting in and out, but we should get that sorted this week. Right now, we’re working out all the kinks, but we are looking forward to starting.”

Engineers hired by the station have been out in force hooking up the station’s transmitters (which are often located on mountain tops) and will be tweaking them as the testing progresses.

“It’s going really well so far. We’ve had great response,” said Ms. Hamm. “The music is a really great blend and that’s the main thing.”

Familiar musicians included in Summit 107’s programming include Maroon 5, Bryan Adams, Madonna, Katy Perry, Elton John, the Eagles and many more.

Active share in today’s market It’s a common belief that passively managed investments such as Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) always outperform actively managed ones. Though it has certainly been the case over the past few years, a truer statement would perhaps be that passive investments tend to outperform during periods of steadily rising markets, and true active management tends to outperform the rest of the time. This is exemplified through the concept of active share.

What is active share?

Active share is a measure, created by two former Yale School of Management professors, that determines the extent to which a mutual fund’s holdings differ from its benchmark index. Those which differ from their benchmarks by more than 60 per cent were considered truly active, while those measuring below were dubbed either a closet index or, if low enough, a pure index fund.

This is significant because many funds which call themselves active are actually closet-indexers, but charge full fees as though they are active. For most investors, the point of buying an active mutual fund is to attempt to beat the markets, not copy them.

Therefore, to truly evaluate an active fund, a metric like active share is important.

What did the study find?

During periods of extraordinarily rising markets,

actively managed investments tended to underperform.

Think of the buying frenzy during the tech boom of July 1998 to March 2000. Massive asset price inflation pushed many stock prices up to three or four times what they would trade at in a normal market environment.

During this time frame, only 42 per cent of high activeshare funds outperformed their benchmarks.

If the timeframe is extended through September 2002 to include the resulting market correction, a different story emerges: 85 per cent of high active-share funds outperformed. But this is just one example. Over all the time periods studied, from July 1998 to December 2014, on an after-fees basis, active management outperformed passive benchmarks 61 per cent of the time.

One key to the active manager’s success was the ability to minimize losses during negative-return environments. The study found that 64 per cent of high activeshare funds exhibited better downside capture than their benchmarks across all market cycles. This is important because a 50 per cent loss requires a 100 per cent gain just to get back to even.

Why is this important?

From March 9th, 2009 to September 2nd, 2014, the TSX rallied significantly, from 7,567 to 15,658 points.

Stocks were so cheap that all investors had to do was buy something, anything, and they were almost guaranteed to make money. Market periods like this can be thought

of as “ETF Markets.”

Today, we are no longer in an ETF market. Since September 2nd, 2014, the TSX has fallen to 14,252 points, almost nine per cent. Still, many stocks are trading at higher than average multiples, meaning their prices are inflated relative to historical norms. In other words, the days of easy money are gone.

Further, the nature of ETFs and true index funds is such that they will always underperform their benchmark on a net-of-fees basis. This means not only do they underperform when markets are hot, they also underperform when markets are soft. Investors need to ask themselves, is this a market where I want to perform close to the benchmark? During March 2009 to September 2014? Absolutely! From September 2014 to August 2015? Perhaps not.

How do I identify active share?

Remember that not all mutual funds are actively managed, even if they claim to be. Examine your fund’s underlying holdings. Are they very similar to the fund’s benchmark? Does the fund itself invest in ETFs? If you’re paying active management rates, the fund should exhibit active share. If indexing, you should be paying less.

Ask your advisor about active share, and how your portfolio is positioned to best weather current, and expected future, market conditions.

Pioneer Classifieds s obituary s Zurbriggen, Vinzenz Paul March 18th, 1946 - August 20th, 2015 Vince passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 20th after succumbing to injuries incurred paragliding from Mt. Swansea on Saturday, July 18th.

Vince was born in Bern, CH. He moved to Canada in the 70’s where he lived an adventurous and fulfilling life. He loved the mountains, his (grand) kids and helping people. He volunteered with assisted skiing and was an active member of the rowing club.

He inspires us to live for today and to fight for what we believe in. We invite you to grieve by celebrating his independent spirit. A celebration of life will be held in the future. Donations can be made to Panorama Adaptive Sports Society or a charity of your choice.

He’ll be missed by Anne, Tanja, Ann-Cay and Matthias Zurbriggen, Milena Cooper, Jean-Luc Cortat, our families, and his friends.

Stevenson, Vivian Joy August 8th, 1924 – July 28th, 2015 Vivian was born August 8th, 1924 in Enchant, Alberta, and passed away on July 28th, 2015 in Invermere, B.C., at the age of 90.

She spent much time volunteering in the community with the Lions, Hospital Aid, United Church Womens Society and the Brisco Recreation Society.

She is survived by her daughter Jeannette Lautrup (George), sons Dallas (Joy), Dennis (Cindy), 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Bill Stevenson, son Ron Stevenson, grandsons Kyle and Michael Stevenson.

Service to take place on August 30, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Brisco Hall. There will be a private Family interment prior to the memorial. Donations can be made to the Cancer Society.

s obituary s Bradshaw, Mark Ronald Mark Ronald Bradshaw, son of Gladys Bradshaw and the late Ronald Bradshaw passed away peacefully in his home (in Abbotsford B.C.) on August 20th, 2015 with his sister Linda by his side.

Mark was predeceased by his father Ron, sister Beverley, brothers Robert and Donald as well as his nephew Darren.

Left to mourn his passing is his mother Gladys, sister Linda, brother Aaron and nephew David, as well as many very close friends.

Mark’s service will be held in Abbotsford B.C. later this September. In lieu of flowers a donation can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a Foundation of your choice.

The family of Ray Jackson would like to thank the staff and management of Ivy House for the compassion and care given to Ray during his stay at Ivy House.

Recipe Of The Week ONE BOWL APPLE CAKE 2 eggs 1 ¾ cups Sugar 2 heaping tspns Cinnamon ½ cup Vegetable Oil

6 medium Gala, Fuji or Honey Crisp Apples 2 cups Flour 2 tspns Baking Soda

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a large bowl, mix the eggs, sugar, cinnamon and oil.

Peel and slice the apples; add to mixture in bowl, coating as you go to keep apples from turning brown.

Mix together the soda and flour; add to the mixture in the bowl.

Mix well until all the flour is absorbed by the wet ingredients.

Pour into a greased 9 x 13 pan.

By Pastor Trevor Hagan, Lake Windermere Alliance Church As our summer begins to come to a close, thoughts move to the routine of school and getting back to the groove of life. Because we here at Lake Windermere Alliance Church believe people matter to God, we value strong families.

Our hearts burn to care for families and young people in our community. We desire to love God and to love people here in our valley by reaching out to help folks connect with God and His truth.

Pastor Matt and Keara Moore have moved to our valley from Calgary and are looking forward to being involved in many ways here in our community. Matt has a strong desire to help people young and old to learn what it means to follow Jesus.

“I believe in empowering and ‘discipling’ (walking alongside) students encouraging them to be all that God has made them to be and, of course, having fun achieving this goal. We have lots of teaching times, games, events,

and team challenges planned for this year. Our Youth Ministry is a safe place to meet and make friends, enjoy some time expending energy on wacky youth group games and being yourself.” (Matt Moore) We believe that faith in God helps families and young people in their everyday lives. Faith in God is like light in the darkness that helps guide us in the good days and the bad. Matthew 5:14-16 Jesus tells us, “You are the light of the world.

A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it Matt and Keara Moore on its stand and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
