New Cenotaph Plaza suffers in deluge of rain

By Breanne Massey Pioneer Staff A thunderstorm in the Columbia Valley late Monday night left some of Invermere’s downtown venues with a dark reality.

A shroud of dark clouds with a light rainfall quickly turned into loud cracks of thunder and bright white glimpses of lightning around 10 p.m. during the June 29th storm.

“We’ve had flooding all through town this morning,” said Chris Prosser, District of Invermere (DOI) chief administrative officer, on June 30th. “We are looking at the drainage aspect of things, talking to the contractor (for the Cenotaph Plaza), see what the as-builts are because there

was a specified pipe size that had to be in there and we’re waiting for those comments to come back.”

Joshua Estabrooks, general manager of the Canterbury Inn, reported seeing “a river” run through the downtown core due to the storm that struck.

“My house is in direct view of the new park,” said Mr. Estabrooks, adding he went outside to help others where possible. “Basically, it was around 10:30 or 11 p.m.

As always, the water rushes down the street out of the community hall parking lot, down the main street, out of the alley behind the (former) Book Bar.” Water typically builds up and gradually drains near the post office, Mr. Estabrooks continued, but he was surprised

to see it get re-routed as a result of the design changes for the new Cenotaph Plaza.

“All the water was going across the road, directly into the new parking stalls by the new park and, I think because of a lack of curb after those parking stalls, continued onto the sidewalks, into the new sod, flooding all the gardens.

The water was shooting out of the manhole two to three feet. Kind of like a geyser of water. The covers were blown off and laying on the ground,” added Mr. Estabrooks, noting planted flowers were uprooted and washed down the sidewalks and into some storefronts. “It looked like a river.”

Calgary firefighter drowns in Columbia Lake

By Kevin Nimmock Pioneer Staff A 32-year-old Calgary man drowned in the northwest end of Columbia Lake on June 28th after his canoe capsized. Ryan Bjolverud, a third year firefighter, had been camping with family and friends near Fairmont Hot Springs. Mr Bjolverud and a friend decided to go fishing at 4 a.m, paddling approximately 200 metres offshore before their canoe suddenly turned over.

“As the firefighter was not a strong swimmer, his friend attempted to swim back in with the canoe and him in tow,” RCMP Cpl. Grant Simpson said. “When the friend noticed the firefighter struggling to keep on the surface, he attempted to help him, but this became too exhausting.”

After Mr. Bjolverud was unable to resurface, the friend swam to shore and called 911. The Columbia Valley RCMP arrived on location at 5:50 a.m. The waters and shoreline were searched, but Mr. Bjolverud

was not located until hours later. The B.C. Coroners Service has since joined the RCMP in handling the investigation into the accident. Neither Mr. Bjolverud or his friend were wearing life jackets when their canoe capsized. Mr. Simpson said there is an important lesson to be learned from this tragic accident.

“I think this just really highlights the importance of making use of the life jackets while boating,” Mr. Simpson said.

RCMP Report Submitted by Cpl. Grant Simpson Columbia Valley RCMP Columbia Valley RCMP responded to approximately 95 calls for service over the past week. Here are just a few of them: • On Thursday, June 25th at 10:58 a.m., Columbia Valley RCMP received a report of a break and enter in the 500 block of Upper Lakeview Road in Invermere from a property representative. The property rep. advised that the property belonged to his mother-in-law, and that entry was gained through the front door sometime during the previous week. Entry was gained by kicking in the front door.

As the residence is only used as a seasonal property, nothing appeared to be missing. A partial footprint (size 8 to 9) was observed next to the door handle by police. Photographs of scene obtained and investigation is ongoing.

• On Friday, June 26th, a local complainant called the Columbia Valley detachment to report that someone “vandalized” the water ski course on Munn Lake near Wilmer.

They reported that the course markers had drifted away from the course, but had since been located. The complainant said he saw a kayaker out on the lake the night before at 9:30 p.m. However, he never saw the kayaker cutting the lines to the markers. The complainant described the kayaker as an older male with grey, shoulder length hair, unkempt, and does not know who the male could be. Munn Lake is unrestricted, which means that the ski course is allowed. Police believe the persons responsible for dismantling the ski course may be a local who doesn’t agree with the ski course.

The complainant will be re-setting the course.

• On Friday, June 26th at 2:17 p.m., Columbia Valley RCMP responded to a four-vehicle MVI in Invermere.

Dispatch reported there were no injuries. While en route, police were informed that the driver of a silver Hyundai . . . ‘Calgary’ from page 3 “Things can go sideways in a matter of seconds.”

In addition, Mr. Simpson said alcohol was a major contributing factor for what occurred. The Coroners Service has yet to complete an autopsy.

Bjolverud’s death has been hard to come to grips with for the whole department. “This is very devastating for the whole fire department family,” Ms. Henke said. “He absolutely loved the job, loved being a firefighter, and was extremely committed and enthusiastic.” City councillors in Calgary paid tribute to Mr. Bjolverud with a moment of silence prior to the regular council meeting on June 30th.

left the scene. Police attended and located the accident on Highway 93/95 near Eacrett Road crossroads. The accident was a chain reaction between two trucks, a car, and a motorcycle. Reports indicated that a vehicle was stopped on the highway facing southbound, attempting to make a left hand turn onto Eacrett Road when the Alberta driver of a black 2008 GMC Sierra heading southbound on Highway 93/95 did not see the vehicles stopped on the road and hit the rear end of a white 2014 Ford F150, also from Alberta.

The impact pushed the Ford forward and into the rear end of a grey local 2004 Hyundai Accent. The Hyundai was then pushed forward and into the rear end of a grey 2008 Honda GL1800 motorcycle operated by an Alberta man. A violation ticket was issued to the driver of the black GMC for following too close. The GMC sustained extensive damage to its front end and was towed. The Ford had a large dent at the rear and minimal damage to the front and was drivable. The motorcycle sustained damage to the left muffler and left storage area, but was able to drive away. Cst. Bell spoke to Josh McLelland who admitted he was the driver. McLelland is prohibited from driving in B.C. • On Sunday, June 28th at 1:28 a.m., police were dispatched to a complaint of a refuse to leave at a local drinking establishment in Invermere. The complainant, a bartender, reported that the bouncer at the bar had to escort an intoxicated local male client outside the premises four times already, and according to the initial complaint, this male client was now trying to fight the bouncer. Mention of a knife had been made, but was later determined to be incorrect. Upon police attendance, it was learned that the client had left the one establishment and had attended to another, causing no issues. Police spoke with the bouncer, who confirmed that no assault had occurred. Police supervised the situation after speaking with the client who was with a sober friend.

Two horses die in Lake Enid accident

By Kevin Nimmock Pioneer Staff This past Father’s Day, two horses drowned in a tragic accident at Lake Enid.

The horses belonged to Invermere local Gerard Paagman. Mr. Paagman and his family were on a short ride with their horses to celebrate Father’s Day. According to RCMP Cpl. Grant Simpson, the two horses were pulling a buggy and drowned after they slipped on uneven ground in the lake.

“They were trying to cool the horses and give them some water,” Mr. Simpson said. “One of the horses stepped over a bit of a ledge and went down, dragging the other horse and the cart down with it.”

At the time of the drowning, Mr. Paagman did not have the reins. Instead, one of his daughters’ boyfriends was guiding the horses and Mr. Paagman was sitting in the buggy.

“He was probably not as experienced as Mr. Paagman was,” Mr. Simpson said. “Obviously, these horses are very valuable to Mr. Paagman.”

Peter Banga, owner of The Invermere Bakery, was at the lake on Father’s Day. “I saw the two horses and they were both thrashing

pretty hard with their front legs,” Mr. Banga said, adding that event became gradually more serious the longer he watched. “I thought ‘something is weird... something is wrong. Why would he drive into the water with the buggy on the horses?’ ” Mr. Banga was about four minutes away from where Mr. Paagman and his family were in the water.

By the time he walked over to them, the horses had drowned. He said he can remember Mr. Paagman’s face vividly.

“When he came out of the water... I looked at him and he looked like he got hit by lightning,” Mr. Banga said. “I think he was totally freaked out about it, same as everyone else.”

Mr. Banga said he cannot understand why the buggy was taken into the lake, especially considering Mr. Paagman’s experience with horses.

“Once they were in there, there was no way anyone could have done anything,” Mr. Banga said.

Mr. Simpson said the drowning was simply a tragic accident and Mr. Paagman would not be charged with any crime.

“There is no intent, so there is no real legal implication,” Mr. Simpson said.

Mr. Paagman could not be reached for comment.

Canfor mill in Canal Flats adds shift

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff Only two months after mass layoffs at Canfor’s Canal Flats mill resulted in 81 employees losing their jobs, market conditions have changed enough that at least two people are back at work.

Canfor director of external affairs and communications Corinne Stavness confirmed to The Pioneer earlier this week that the Canal Flats mill is running a full shift for its B planer, with the net result of the operation adding two full-time jobs.

“The shift will run this way for the foreseeable future,” said Ms. Stavness, adding it was done to “ad-

The mass layoffs at the mill were announced in early February and took effect on May 4th, with the company pointing to a lack of affordably available timber fibre supply as the reason. The move meant the Canfor mill dropped from two full shifts to one full shift.

At the time Canal Flats mayor Ute Juras said it was not the kind of news any community wants to hear, as it likely meant the village would lose residents, but she thanked Canfor for its transparent and direct communications. A transition team, comprised of government ministry, Canfor and other groups was formed to help as many laid-off employees as possible find other work.

Are you second-class?

By Nicole Trigg Pioneer Staff This Canada Day, many Canadians were out celebrating in usual Canadian style by camping, watching parades and fireworks, or just enjoying a brew and barbecue out on the backporch. But of the 35 million Canucks happy to pay their respects to the red and white maple leaf flag, many may have been feeling a little apprehensive, a little upset, or even just downright mad.

That’s because of a new federal law, passed last year but parts of which recently came into effect, that considers these Canadians citizens to be in a class of their own.

And you might be one of them.

This past spring, when much of the country was riled up about Canada’s new anti-terrorism Bill C-51, not many were paying attention to Bill C-24, “The Strengthening Canadian Citizenship Act,” that has created a two-tier citizenship for Canada or, what many are calling, “second-class citizens.”

You’re a second-class citizen if you were born outside of Canada, if you were born in Canada but have another nationality, or if you are eligible to obtain another nationality. Basically, dual citizens and people who have immigrated to Canada can have their citizenship taken away while other Canadians cannot. Similar to Bill C-51, this bill was passed to protect Canadians from terrorism. Similar to Bill C-51, the fear is that Bill C-24 could easily be used against non-terrorists.

In an April 24th Pioneer story on Bill C-51, Conservative Kootenay Columbia MP David Wilks dismissed this fear. “I personally can’t even fathom that a terrorist activitity will be protesting again a pipeline or protesting against (logging) an old growth forest. I just don’t get it,” he said at the time. But Mr. Wilks’ inability to “fathom” isn’t exactly a concrete reassurance that natural born Canadians and immigrants aren’t at risk.

Traditionally, if you were a Canadian citizen, you couldn’t have it taken away unless a federal court judge decided after a full court proceeding. Now, the decision can be made by a citizenship officer without the opportunity of a live hearing or appeal.

Oh Canada, we stand on guard for thee, but who is standing on guard for Canadians?

Happy library has a new home Dear Editor: We were so pleased to hear that council is now considering the inclusion of the public library in the new community centre. The library was our very first stop back in 1996 when we moved here, and our entire four-generation family has used and supported the library ever since.

The community centre is exactly the right place for a facility that offers much, much more than reading materials. Over the years, I have observed the library provide companionship and outreach for seniors; a welcome haven for stay-at-home moth-

ers with toddlers; tourist information for both outof-town visitors and newcomers; office support for small business owners (public computers, technical support, photocopying); research assistance for genealogists and historians; display space for local artists and photographers; and author visits. That’s not even including the wide range of programs and special events that take place there every week.

The library belongs in the new community centre because it truly is the heart of our community.

Democracy is in danger Dear Editor: Informed citizenry is essential to democracy. Are we as Canadians “informed?”

Who is informing us? Steven Harper?

Certainly not! MPs are gagged. Scientists and public servants have all been muzzled.

Research libraries have been closed.

If our own government colludes to blind its own citizens, who is left to inform them? Mainstream media? TV, radio, and newspapers?

Our media has been allowed to become, with few exceptions, a privatelyowned billionaire’s club monopoly. Today, every major English-language newspaper, outside the Star and the Globe, is owned by one company, Postmedia. It’s largely owned by a U.S. hedge fund. Think they give a damn if you’re informed? They’re after profit.

Read every newspaper and watch every newscast, and you still couldn’t scrape up enough information to cast an informed ballot. That’s why voter turnout is so low. And why Harper, in scandal after scandal — from cheating on elections to using publicly-funded Senators as party fundraisers — somehow, mysteriously, is still up in the polls!

Advertising dollars buys media loyalty.

In the last federal election, Harper had the editorial support of every major Canadian newspaper.

What has cheap-tricks Harper, the man who brought you robocalls and attack-ads, got planned for our next federal election? Political Action Committees or PACs — same as the U.S. super-PACs. Expect a massive propaganda blitz of thirdparty advertising. Prepare to be social-engineered.

Canada’s democracy hangs on a thin thread: the CBC. Canadians own the CBC, at a cost of 10 cents each per day.

One of its roles is to provide us with an independent news and information source.

That’s why it’s on Harper’s hit list. Massive funding cuts and a Board of Directors handpicked by Harper will kill the CBC from inside. Democracy will die with it.

Harper and previous Liberals both cut funding to the CBC. What did they want to hide? If you ask me, both are brands owned by foreign oil.

NDP’s Tom Mulcair vowed to restore funding to the CBC. In our coming federal election, vote for democracy! It may be your last chance.

Weighing in on Jumbo resort Dear Editor: On June 16th, I had the ignominious pleasure to attend a public hearing which was held in Radium Hot Springs municipal offices for input to a Official Community Plan cobbled together by unelected politicians for a zero population community, miles from nowhere, in B.C. wilderness — the Jumbo Glacier “Ski Resort” Development, ostensibly the brainchild of an architect, Oberto Oberti of Vancouver, B.C. that has been wasting our precious time for decades.

While thinking about what I would be able to contribute to the public hearing without giving credence to a clearly flawed process I came up with

many things to say, particularly after reading the OCP document which is full of half-truths and outright misrepresentations of the facts.

When I did speak, however, I decided not to belabour the facts since to me the process has been a sham designed solely so the politicians could say that public input had been solicited.

Campfires of any kind will be banned across B.C.’s Southeast Fire Centre (which includes the East Kootenay region) starting today.

The ban takes effect on 1 p.m. on Friday, July 3rd and comes after several weeks of hot and dry conditions, in an effort to prevent humancaused wildfires. It applies to all kinds of campfires; waste burning; stubble or grass fires of any size over any area; the use of fireworks, sky lanterns and tiki torches. Still allowed to be used under the ban are cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes; and portable campfire apparatuses with a CSA or ULC rating that uses briquettes, liquid or gaseous fuel, so long as the height of the flame is less than 15 centimetres.

The ban covers all provincial parks, Crown lands and private land, but does not apply within the boundaries of a local municipality that has forest fire prevention bylaws and is serviced by a fire department.

He believes the old curb contained previous rainfalls to the street, and expressed a sense of disappointment at how his former business and current home was affected.

“It’s disheartening… now that the street is gone, (the rain) filled our sidewalk… just like a river going by,” said Mr. Peters. “And it got up against our building so water came in through the sides of the foundation and through the front door when I opened it.”

He estimates the water was roughly two feet deep when the water flowed in front of the door and about three inches deep when it flowed inside.

“What I’ve observed… is that there’s a big storm sewer that comes down the side of the street there, past the motel, and it’s probably 16 inches, I’m guessing, in size,” said Mr. Peters.

“They put a manhole cover there and they’ve brought new storm sewers from that manhole to the one out in front of the building here by 7th Avenue, about nine inches in size, so they’ve reduced it down by less than half. You can’t feed a 16 inch into a nine inch and expect it to (drain).

That’s a no brainer.”

Hot vehicles harm pets Submitted by ICAN The Invermere Companion Animal Network (ICAN) is currently running the award-winning “No Hot Pets” (www.nohotpets.ca) campaign, created by the Ontario SPCA, in an effort to remind pet owners of the dangers of leaving pets unattended in a vehicle during the hot summer months.

Parked cars can quickly reach deadly temperatures, even on relatively mild days with the car parked in the shade and the windows slightly open.

Citizens are asked to share the message about the dangers of leaving pets in vehicles, online using #nohotpets and by downloading and sharing free marketing materials available on the No Hot Pets website. In addition, pet owners are asked to visit www.nohotpets. ca and pledge to not leave their pets in their vehicles.

Those who pledge will receive a free No Hot Pets window decal for their vehicles (while supplies last).

“Leaving your pet unattended in a vehicle is one of the most irresponsible things an owner can do.

Leave your pet at home and, if you must take your

pet, make sure that someone is with her at all times,” says volunteer Lana Banham. “During the hot summer months, let’s keep everyone safe and cool.”

Facts Dogs have a limited ability to sweat. Even a short time in a hot environment can be life-threatening. A dog’s normal body temperature is about 39 C and a temperature of 41 C can be withstood only for a very short time before irreparable brain damage or even death can occur.

Treatment If heat stroke is suspected (excessive panting and drooling, listlessness or unconsciousness) prompt veterinary medical attention is vital. In the meantime, wet the fur immediately with lukewarm to cool water, not cold water. Bring the pet into the shade and offer drinking water.

Couple celebrates 70 years together

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff A valley couple is preparing to mark an exceptional milestone of longevity with their 70th wedding anniversary coming up next week.

John and Laura Ronacher married on July 7th, 1945, and have been living happily in the Upper Columbia Valley ever since.

“We laugh a lot and have a good sense of humour. You can’t live without that,” Laura told The Pioneer earlier this week, speaking on the secrets of making a marriage last seven decades. “It’s about give and take. My husband, for instance, just learned to do the dishes last year.”

The couple met after Laura’s father moved to the valley from Manitoba and got a job in 1939 working for the Ronacher family at their mill. John and Laura’s first home, in Athalmer on the corner by the turnoff to Panorama, was purchased for the pair by John’s parents for $1,000 (which included three lots as well as the house). In 1973, they left their first home and moved into their current house on Westside Road. John and Laura both worked at the Ronacher mill, with Laura taking business courses and becoming a bookkeeper there.

“We’ve had a good life,” said Laura, adding they both have hobbies to keep them busy. John is a handy man, who fixes and builds just about everything, while Laura collects salt and pepper shakers. She started her collection when Queen Elizabeth was crowned, and today it numbers more than 800 shakers.

The couple has two children, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. John and Laura say they have no plans for a big celebration, but instead want to mark July 7th with a nice, quiet evening at home with family.

Strap on some roller skates and step back into the 1940s with friends, families and visitors this summer.

Jason Stevens, who works as the ice technician at the Invermere District Curling Centre during the winter, has begun a quest to bring a retro trend back to life.

He purchased 270 pairs of roller skates from John and Janie Wainwright in southern Washington last week and filled up his Mazda CX4 to the brim to bring a blast from the past back to Invermere.

“We actually had to close the doors (of the car) and keep feeding skates in, then roll the windows up to keep them all in there,” said Mr. Stevens. “When we (came home and) opened it up, there was an avalanche of roller skates.”

The plan to collect vintage roller skates stems from a need to raise money to keep the venue open all year long.

Mr. Stevens had spent a substantial amount of time trolling the Internet for a roller rink on the verge of shutting down when he stumbled upon Golden Skate in Vancouver, Washington — a venue that had been operating successfully for 71 years.

He initially expected to pick up 150 pairs of skates from the Wainwright couple, but was pleasantly surprised when even more were available during his trip down south.

“The expenses for the club keep going up and it’s getting harder and harder to break even,” Mr. Stevens explained. “We’re a non-profit society, so it’s not a matter of making a profit, but we need to keep our doors open.”

He’s not the only person excited by the new purchase.

Invermere Killer Rollbots roller derby team captain and fundraising organizer Jess de Groot hopes the popularity of roller skating will continue to surface and expand in Invermere.

“We’re really excited (as a team) because part of why we love roller derby is that we love roller skating,” she added. “A lot of the girls have started going to the skate park because it’s another way to use our skates and have fun and still be roller skating.”

She explained her team is eager to spend time at the roller rink, and ultimately views it as yet another way to put their skates to use. Ms. de Groot is hoping there’s an opportunity for the Roller Killbots to offer workshops on rollerskating to the community.

“Maybe we’ll get some new skaters out of it, maybe we’ll get some kids interested and we could start a junior team or something like that,” she added, while noting the popularity of the sport has immense potential to grow. “I think it’s a really good idea, and it’s a good space for it… Hopefully people will be really interested in it and they’ll keep going.”

Local teens offered trip of a lifetime

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff Local East Kootenay environmental group Wildsight will be leading a trip for local students over the Earl Grey Pass and through the heart of the Purcell Wilderness Conservancy this summer.

The five-day trip, which tackles one of the wildest routes in the entire Kootenay region, is open to students aged 14 to 18 and is being made to help mark the conservancy’s 40th anniversary. Organizers Dave Quinn and Tamara Dykshoorn are tentatively planning to start near Toby Creek (just west of Invermere) and proceed across alpine and old-growth forest landscapes to Hammill Creek (east of Argenta).

forests, and cable cars across Hammill Creek,” said Mr. Quinn in a email, adding he and Ms. Dykshoorn have an equally appealing alternate route plan in case any fire activity or access issues arise during the summer.

“The group will be learning backcountry navigation, cooking, and wilderness travel skills, as well as leadership skills, as they will be leading various portions of the daily backpacking activities, with help from Tamara and I,” said Mr. Quinn in the email.

The group will be horse supported and tents, packs, sleeping bags, and even boots can be arranged for would-be participants who do not have them.

Valley Skies

By Brian Fenerty Pioneer Columnist My favourite place for a quick look at the evening sky is down by Pynelogs in Invermere. Lakes radiate heat at night, which can distort high powered telescope viewing, but for checking out a passing space station, constantly moving moons around Jupiter, or constellations appearing as dusk draws on, a spot by Taynton Bay or Lake Dorothy is fine.

I also do a lot of heron watching there. More than once in the dusk, a shadowy heron will fly homeward overhead as, one by one, the stars Deneb in Cygnus, Vega and Arcturus appear, followed by more and more. Pale Saturn drifts into the south.

I imagine the cross-shaped constellation of Cygnus the Swan (flying southward) as a great heron instead, flying northward over the river of stars.

We are going to be seeing more and more about Pluto’s moons. The New Horizons probe zipping by the tiny classic planet on July 14th will send back photos in detail never seen before — not just of Pluto itself, but also its big main moon Charon and at least four others. Not just regular camera images either! Diverse instruments on board will check out Plu-

to’s atmosphere to gauge temperature and composition, possible rings around Pluto, maybe extra moons, surface temperatures, geologies, crater sizes and their histories, Pluto’s interaction with the solar wind, and even interplanetary dust.

Following up on a previous column where it was discussed whether or not planet positions affect life on earth… planets can indeed — over millions of orbits — affect each other. Earth gets affected, too. It slows down and speeds up in orbit, very subtly.

Earth’s crust is slightly flexible, and tectonic plates gradually move over our dynamic molten interior, hence our Rockies and Purcells.

If positions of objects overhead still seem profound, consider this: over the next few months, an almost perfect equilateral triangle of stars in Bootes and Corona Borealis goes sailing over us.

Not only are the sides of the “star triangle” virtually equal, but right in the very middle is another star. And next to this triangle is the constellation Hercules, near the current direction that our Sun, and even Pluto, are all headed on our voyage around our huge galaxy.

Museum catering to children Curator’s Corner

By J.D. Jeffery Museum Curator July is the beginning of the museum’s Summer Children’s Program. We have organized the program and have decided on the theme: “Things that don’t change.” It starts Tuesday, July 14th from 10:30 a.m. to noon, and runs every Tuesday till the last week in August. Weekly activity favourites include mining and shopping, but new things include crime fighting and exploring. Contact the museum to register at 250-342-9769 as there are limited number of spots each week.

Last month, I highlighted the landmark of the current 5th Street, previously known as Rotten Row. I was contacted with further information on the origins of the name. In London, the street was used by the king to travel from Whitehall to the country or to Kensington Palace’s clean air. Later, the upper classes travelled the road as well. I went through our maps to find out when the name was used here. In 1911, not all streets had names, but

the 1934 map shows all the names and Rotten Row was the current 5th Street. With the 1956 map, the street name remained, but more recent maps show street numbers instead of names. So, the children living on 5th Street ended up upholding the name of Rotten Row. As for the conversational piece “don’t throw the baby out with the bath water,” not all people had indoor plumbing or wells when they were homesteading. To have a bath meant hauling water, heating it on the stove and then waiting for your turn. Once a week, everyone would have a bath in a certain pecking order: oldest to youngest starting with the men, then the boys, then ladies were next followed by the girls. The last to have their bath was always the babies. Due to the work involved, the water wasn’t changed between the bathers. Everyone shared, so after a large family finished bathing, the water was quite dirty. Someone had the job of dumping out the bath water, but they were advised to make sure the young ones were accounted for or they could throw them out with the dirty water. Coining the phrase, “don’t throw out the baby with the bath water.”

Fairmont fun for kids

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff Fairmont Hot Springs Resort is launching into summer in full swing, with plenty of fun for kids of all ages at its summer camps, golf clinics and swimming lessons.

“The camps are great because the kids get to do so many different things,” said Fairmont Hot Springs Resort director of sales and marketing Nancy Hetherington. “The emphasis is all about having fun.”

The golf clinics include the Little Fairmonsters (which is for kids ages three to six and introduces them to golf for the first time) and the Junior Fairmonsters clinics (which is an introduction to the full swing and short game for beginner and experienced juniors alike). The day camps run Mondays through Fridays, having started on June 29th. This year, each day will have a different theme, such as fun and sports, wilderness survival, wet and wild, all about animals and nature discovery. The swimming lessons are available at the resort’s pools Monday through Friday from 8 to 11 a.m. for kids 24 months old to five years. Swim courses include Red Cross Swim Kids Levels 1 through 10 as well as diving lessons.

“We have two really great instructors for the diving lessons, which is really unique for the valley,” said Ms. Hetherington.

Winners and losers of higher interest rates After almost a decade of near-zero interest rates, the U.S. economy is showing signs of strength. Their labour market is firming up, financial markets are sturdy and inflation is starting to take hold. These factors and others have caused the US Federal Reserve to hint that interest rates could start going up in the near future.

So, the question isn’t if the rates will rise, but when.

And when that happens, how will it affect the economy?

Here are some economic aspects that could be helped or hurt by rising interest rates in the U.S. The greenback Raising interest rates will cause the U.S. dollar to rally, due to many factors. Firstly, their bond market will become more appealing to investors seeking a better risk/ return strategy. The U.S. is considered among one of the safest economies in the world, drawing domestic and foreign investors to their bond market.

A rising U.S. dollar could also unfortunately have the consequence of eroding the competitiveness of the U.S., and countries whose exchange rates track the dollar, including China. The more expensive it is for the U.S. to produce goods, the less competitive they can be on a global scale.

Global stocks On the other hand, a stronger dollar can purchase more foreign-made goods. This is especially prevalent for

countries whose exchange rates track currencies other than the U.S., such as Japan and those in the Euro Zone.

Higher interest rates, and therefore a higher dollar, could cause the many global stocks to appreciate in value.

Emerging market bonds Bonds of emerging market economies could suffer as a result of higher interest rates. Over the past decade as domestic bond yields compressed, the yield spread between domestic and emerging market bonds widened.

This caused investors to flood into emerging market bonds. Higher interest rates will make U.S. bonds more attractive to investors, and emerging market economies will have to raise interest rates to gain attention.

Long-term bonds Current holders of long-term bonds, especially those issued in the last several years, could get whipsawed when interest rates rise. That’s because when interest rates rise, yields on existing bonds fall, and vice versa. In fact, this is the reason why bond investors fared so well in the past.

After rates peaked in 1981, the Canadian and U.S. economies fell into a period of falling interest rates, which has lasted 34 years.

Long-term bonds are almost always more volatile than short-term bonds, as they are more sensitive to changes in interest rates. During the last three decades, this feature helped investors. Going forward, it will hurt them.

Insurance companies Premiums on insurance policies are based on interest rate expectations. When interest rates are very low, insurance companies have to demand higher premiums in order to fulfil their obligations. When interest rates rise, so too will insurance companies’ returns.

Banks Higher interest rates mean higher borrowing costs.

This can hurt corporations and individuals looking for financing. On the other hand, banks and other financing companies will benefit, as long as loan losses do not outpace revenue growth.

Final thoughts Rates aren’t expected to rise sharply or quickly. Recent statistics show that the U.S. economy has fallen well short of three per cent growth expectations. GDP contracted 0.7 per cent in the first quarter 2015, and revised inflation expectations are estimated to fall in the 0.6 to 0.8 per cent range for 2015. So while some expect the Fed to raise interest rates in September, many analysts are predicting December at the earliest.

The longer the Fed waits, however, the greater the risk of asset price bubbles and subsequent crashes. It is expected that the economy would best respond to slow, steady rate increases in order to adjust accordingly and help stem the chances of overly negative consequences.

Pioneer Classifieds s obituary s Gordon Lake 1919-2015

It is with profound sadness, that we announce the peaceful passing of James “Gordon” Lake on Sunday, June 14th, 2015 at 96 years of age.

Gordon was born on January 7, 1919 in Invermere, to Percival and Linnie Lake, one of the original valley pioneer families.

Gordon served overseas in WWII. He worked as a saw filer in a sawmill, then with his brother Roy Lake at Lake Auto Service as a Mechanic. He finished his career with School District #4 as Transportation Supervisor, Bus Driver and a Mechanic. Gordon was very involved in the community with the Royal Canadian Legion, Lions Club, and the Invermere Fire Department as their first Fire Chief.

Gordon was predeceased by his first wife, Elsie (1985) and his grandson Brian Barkley, brothers Roy and Calvin and sisters Ellen and Myrtle.

Gordon leaves behind his wife Phyllis, his sons Rick Lake, Earl (Esther) Evans and Clifford (Linda) Barkley, daughter Carol (Garry) Hoffert, Phyllis’ children Jim (Marg) Gibb, Sharon (Les) Bidinger and Yvonne (Gary) Messner, his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren.

A memorial service for Gordon will be held on Saturday, July 4, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Christ Church Trinity in Invermere followed by a memorial tea. In lieu of flowers, donations in honour of Gordon can be made to: STARS Foundation, 1441 - Aviation Park NE, Box 570, Calgary, Alberta, T2E 8M7 or the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #71, PO Box 446, Invermere, British Columbia, V0A 1K0 or the charity of your choice.

May 16th, 1948 - May 30th, 2015 It is with heartfelt sorrow that I announce the passing of my Sandy after a 10 month battle with cancer at the Invermere Hospital, with family by his side. He was 67 years young. Born in Amherst, Nova Scotia, son of the late James and Genevieve (Gougan) MacPherson.

Sandy is survived by his loving wife Joan, three step-children Kevin Morneau of Calgary, Gordie (Shawna) Morneau of Invermere, and Valerie (Drew) Sinclair of Windermere, ten grandchildren and four great-granddaughters. Greatly missed also by longtime friends Duncan Horne, Saint John, NB, and Ken Willimont, Radium, B.C. Sandy served 5 years in the Canadian Armed Forces, was an Ironworker for 25 years and employed at Schickedanz Brothers, taking an early retirement in August of 2014.

Sandy could always be found in his shop designing and building furniture, or wooden toys for our grandchildren , or just about anything that caught his eye in magazines. He was also an avid reader.

Sandy’s wishes were not to have a service but to have a family gathering at a later date.

We would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to Dr. B. Johnson and his staff. Dr. Johnson will always be remembered for going above and beyond to keep Sandy comfortable at all times. And to the Invermere ER doctors, nurses and palliative nurses for their compassionate care and thoughtfulness.

A super big heartfelt Cheers to Sylvia of ICAN and Dr. Mark Zehnder, Invermere Veterinary Hospital, who have taken Trapper and given him a new lease on life. Trapper is the orange tabby cat found in Canal Flats caught in a leg hold trap.

Jeers to the irresponsible individual who would set a leg hold trap in a community where everyone’s pet is put at risk of being maimed or killed. Before you set another trap, just imagine the agony of slowly losing your foot to gangrene caused by a bone breaking crush wound.

Cheers to the workers on the cenotaph project. For months we watched you working there, in the cold, in the snow, in the rain and in the heat. Not once did I see even one worker with a cigarette in his mouth or hand!

This is commendable! Cheers to you and your boss if he’s the one who enforces this rule in the work place.

And the new space is beautiful! Job well done!

Cheers to the passive aggressive neighbour with the sensitive nose. Although you completely exaggerated the smell of coffee roasting, you have inspired me to create a new blend- it’s going to be called ‘Grumpy Neighbour’ and it’s going to be a simple, punchy, & loud blend with strong notes of bitterness. Hopefully this new coffee will be so wildly successful that I can afford the expensive afterburning equipment and production space that Kicking Horse was only able to get after years of business.

Huge Cheers to all the doctors and nurses in the Emergency Dept. at the Invermere and Cranbrook hospitals. While holidaying in the valley I became ill and was taken to the emergency in Invermere and then transferred to the hospital in Cranbrook. The doctors and nurses gave me exceptional care. They didn’t just make me comfortable then send me home; they worked at finding the problem and making a diagnosis. They even took the time to consult with my doctor in Calgary. I hope the residents of the valley appreciate the superior health care they receive from these amazing health care workers.

Big Cheers to Jane from Lambert Insurance who was able to make my transition moving to this province very easy! She went out of her way to secure the required documents!

Golf courses cater to kids

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff Parent-Kid Tournament in Radium The Radium Golf Group is gearing up for its 23rd Annual Parent-Child Tournament next weekend.

The popular annual event will be on Sunday, July 12th this year at the Radium course, as a wind up for Take A Kid to the Course Week.

“It’s about going out and having fun. It’s not highly competitive, it’s more meant to be a family event,” said Radium Resort assistant general manager Joe Evanoff.

“We call it a tournament but basically it’s an event for anybody, even beginners. It’s just a great day out and nice way to bring people together.”

Each parent-kid duo will be a team, and the tournament will be in Chapman format. This means that each member of the parent-kid team hits a tee shot, the best tee shot is chosen and the parent and child play alternating shots as a team down the rest of the hole. The tournament will also use a Callaway system to help even the score among teams.

“It makes it possible for anybody to win,” said Mr. Evanoff.

The tournament, which typically draws 50 to 70 participants, is open to everybody. It will begin at 1 p.m., followed by a barbecue and prizes, and is sponsored by Coca Cola.

The Radium course is offering an extended Take A Kid to the Course Week, running it from July 3rd to 12th instead of the nation-wide period of July 6th to 12th.

Kids golf for free Many local golf courses will be participating in Take A Kid to the Course Week, a Canada-wide initiative designed to get more young people out playing golf.

During the annual event, which runs from July 6th to July 12th, kids under age 16 play for free when accompanying a paying adult.

“It’s all about trying to grow the game and we’re super involved with it. Most of the other courses in the valley have come on board with the idea,” said Copper Point Resort head golf professional Scott McClain. “In fact, several years ago our (Copper Point) board of directors decided to take it a step further and all year kids under 12 play for free on the Ridge course. It’s really just about getting kids to play more, and introducing the game to a younger generation.”

“We want to help grow the game, and make it more accessible for everybody,” said Eagle Ranch Golf Resort general manager Eric Thorsteinson in a press release on Eagle Creek’s participation.

“The game of golf provides kids with valuable life skills, such as perseverance, patience, and respect,” said Mr. Thorsteinson. “Playing a round of golf with your children is an excellent way to enjoy quality time outdoors, while having fun.”

Mr. McClain added that the initiative is an effort to combat the static participation in golf. During the last several years, the industry has seen the number of new golfers joining the game barely replacing the number of older golfers leaving it.

“We really want to grow the game and this push for junior golfers has been really exciting,” he said, noting this push has included more focus on junior golf camps, after-school programs, junior club rentals, as well as a junior tournament.

Invermere prepares for mystery dining fun

By Kevin Nimmock Pioneer Staff A worldwide culinary phenomenon with a strict dress code is coming to Invermere on July 11th. Soirée en Blanc, a flash mob style dining event featuring some of Invermere’s best restaurants, offers guests a unique evening in the valley.

“Guests pre-buy a ticket and the location is kept secret until the day of, when it is emailed or texted to them,” said District of Invermere events co-ordinator Theresa Wood.

Guests bring their own table settings, but tables and chairs are provided. Meals from Fuze, Birchwood and Safta’s can be purchased in advance, or guests can bring their own meals.

“It started back in the day when a group of friends wanted to meet at the Eiffel Tower for a picnic, and one of them said ‘wear white so I know who you are’,” Ms. Wood said.

At the event, music will be provided by a live band and there will be a cash bar, with proceeds benefiting Columbia Valley Arts.

The joy of children

By Father Gabriel St. Joseph’s Catholic Church The children’s park adjacent to the Columbia Garden Village was crowded and overflowing with little children. I stopped a while to have a closer look at them.

With their multicolour shoes on their tiny feet, they were running here and there.

The mothers were delighted to follow them with great attention. Their happiness and joy was evident. The onlookers had great fun and laughter because they forgot their own world and associated with the children. The children mingled together freely, walked side by side, held each other’s hands without any gender bias, and shared their toys and play things with their new friends. Such a heartwarming feeling was not only a pleasant experience, but also a reflective moment as I thought of the wonderful phrase: “Let little children come to me” from Mark 10:14.

Each child is a precious gift of God to the family. Parents welcome and nurture each offspring with tenderness and joy, and care for them with amazing affection and love.

Parents and grandparents glory in their children and their children’s children. The reciprocal love of the siblings in a family promotes the longevity of their parents. I have seen mothers carrying their children in their arms with their wonderful maternal touch. Isaiah 60:4-5 explains this aspect of joy filled activity of the parent: “You shall see them

carried and become radiant, for your heart shall thrill and rejoice.” The Psalms speak of children and especially Psalm 128:3: “Children are like olive shoots and they surround your table,” giving parents happiness and prosperity.

A mother shared her maternal experience. Even when she came home tired and exhausted from a day’s heavy work, on seeing her little child, her tiredness was gone altogether with her daily worries. Each family feels the same way as this mother at the face of their young ones. Every parent is touched by the grace of their children. In those moments, the parent also becomes a little child to move into the world of their child. In the modern world, parents do not get enough time to spend with their little ones due to work pressures and family dynamics.

William Wordsworth uses a thought provoking expression, “The child is the father of the man,” that explains deeply that people’s potentialities are formed when they are children. A person will have the same qualities as an adult that he/she had as a child. Therefore, a happy childhood is essential for a fruitful and thriving adult life. The child is pure, innocent and spontaneous. When it is nurtured with good qualities, attitudes, manners and behaviours, it becomes a good man/woman, good husband/wife and ultimately a good parent. Positive life nurturing impressions get deeply rooted and imprinted in their minds. These traits form a solid foundation for the child’s adult life and determine their personality.

Children found a welcoming place on the lap of Christ: “Let little children come to me” (Mk 10:14). He touched and blessed them with warmth and love. May God touch and bless all our children. Pope Francis appeals to all parents to spend quality time with their children in their developmental years and care for them with warmth and tenderness.

Hole in one!

The Riverside golf course celebrated a hole in one on June 18th. The golfer, Mr. Ravi Brar (green shirt), who was playing as part of the Calgary Food & Drug Executives tournament, aced Riverside’s 13th hole, which just happened to be the sponsored hole with a Lincoln automobile as the prize. The hole is 161 yards and a 7 iron was used — obviously the perfect club selection!
