Deer cull resumes, court costs compromised

By Dan Walton Pioneer Staff After the legitimacy of a local deer cull in 2012 was unsuccessfully challenged in court, the District of Invermere is looking to recoup some of its legal costs as another round of culling gets underway.

In May 2014, council authorized district staff to submit a deer cull permit to Service BC. The permit is to cull 30 deer per year at a capped cost of $30,000 annually. The process began last week, and has been handled by district staff.

“This (year’s cull) is much more operational — we’re hands off as far as council’s concerned,” said Invermere mayor Gerry Taft. “We set the policy and then let staff deal with it.”

In 2012, the district was forced to halt a cull because of a temporary court injunction on behalf of the Inver-

mere Deer Protection Society (IDPS — formerly known as the Invermere Deer Protection Organization), which took the matter to the BC Supreme Court to question whether a public deer cull was lawful. The judge ultimately ruled in favour of the district, but the injunction reduced the scope of the cull and cost Invermere around $24,000, said Mr. Taft. While the district is entitled to recoup that money, only about $13,000 was posted as security. While the IDPS still owes the remainder of the money, Mr. Taft isn’t optimist the district will ever see it.

“You would spend more money trying to collect it than what it’s worth,” he said.

The difference between what will be collected and what is owed will be listed in the district’s budget as a liability or debt, Mr. Taft said.

“After a certain number of years (that pass without collecting the money), it will be written off as a bad debt.”

During the 2012 cull, the injunction hampered the district’s timeframe to cull. Only 19 deer were killed – far short of the target of 100.

For 2015, instead of aiming for such a large number of deer in a short period of time as done in 2012, district staff will oversee the culling of less deer over a greater timeframe.

Depending on district operations, “it could happen more randomly and (be) spread out through the entire year,” Mr. Taft said.

In abiding to regulations, trapping and culling must be done during the evening. There will be blackout dates during the spring fawning season.

“The goal is to try and target the aggressive and problem deer,” Mr. Taft said. “So instead of trying to get the largest number possible, we’re trying to get 30 over a long period of time, and try to make sure that the one’s we do get count.”

Proposed bylaw highlights Whitetail Lake debate

By Nicole Trigg Pioneer Staff A public hearing on a bylaw amendment regarding bare land strata subdivision in the Upper Columbia Valley took place on Monday, February 2nd at the Columbia Ridge Commnity Centre and was attended by roughly 13 members of the public.

A subdivision currently underway at Whitetail Lake (accessed by two forest service roads approximately 28 kilometres west of Canal Flats) prompted Regional District of East Kootenay staff to draft the bylaw (No. 2559). In 2010, the Whitetail Lake Land Corporation (WLLC) applied to the RDEK to rezone the roughly 3,800 acres it had purchased from Tembec and was turned down. The WLLC discovered it could still proceed by undertaking density averaging through the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure — the Strata Property Act allowed it since the RDEK didn’t have in place

a bylaw to restrict this avenue.

In the question and answer period preceding the public hearing, RDEK planner Kris Belanger explained the bylaw amendment was beneficial because it would set a minimum parcel size when there is a bare land strata using density averaging.

This will provide public certainty as to the lot sizes that can be created and there will be the political benefit of narrowing the range of options. “This forces developers into zoning so elected politicians can make decisions,” he said.

Canal Flats resident and WLLC director Barry Benson asked if public input was solicited before drafting the bylaw. “It’s a far-reaching bylaw that really deserves the full understanding of the public,” said Mr. Benson, stating that additional time for public input should be considered. Staff did the research, replied Mr. Belanger, and the bylaw is “well-aligned with what other jurisdictions are doing.”

Citizens on Patrol I am going to make another pitch for this program. We are looking for volunteers in the community who may wish to become involved in Citizens on Patrol for Radium and Invermere. My concern is that the few who are involved in each community are unable to spread their time and involvement in the program, and they risk burnout. If you want to look into this and wish more information, contact me at the detachment. If there is enough interest, we can arrange an information session.

911/False alarms In a period of one week, out of 42 calls for service 17 of these calls were on 911 abandoned and false alarm calls.

The majority are the result of cell phones programmed to dial 911 at the press of one number. These are results of accidentally hitting the button.

• On Thursday, January 29th at 1:08 p.m., the Columbia Valley Detachment as well as the Golden Detachment received a report of a missing person who did not arrive at an expected destination at a prearranged time.

Patrols were negative, however. Both detachments were informed later that the 52-year-old male had eventually returned home safe and sound.

• On Thursday, January 29th at 3:19 p.m., the detachment responded to a disturbance complaint on Kootenay #3. A 36-year-old male was destroying property at a residence. The male was arrested for mischief and lodged in cells until sober. The victim did not wish to pursue charges.

• On Friday, January 30th at 1 p.m., the detachment assisted Delta police in regard to a theft of identification investigation being done in Delta. Delta police have a suspect in their investigation and the victim resides in the Invermere area.

• On Saturday, January 31st at 2:30 a.m., detachment officers attended to a disturbance in the area of Bighorn Meadows in Radium. A 28-year-old male from Radium

was apprehended due to his actions and taken to the Invermere and District Hospital. Once released, the male was lodged in cells until sober.

• On Saturday, January 31st at 3 a.m., officers responded to a domestic assault with weapon in the 7000 block of Prospector Road in Radium. The investigation resulted in the arrest of a 27-year-old male from Radium. A knife was seized at the scene. There was no evidence that the victim was harmed with the knife. The investigation resulted in the male being charged with assault and was released for court on April 13th with conditions of no contact with the victim.

• On Saturday, January 31st at 5:40 a.m., ambulance services requested police at the Radium Golf Course to assist with an intoxicated female. On attendance, it was determined that the 25-year-old female from Radium was unable to locate a friend or able to attend her residence.

The female was arrested for drunk in public and lodged in cells until sober.

• On Saturday, January 31st at 11:50 p.m., the detachment received a report of a hit and run that was confirmed via video surveillance. As a result, a 24-year-old male from Windermere was charged with fail to remain at the scene of an accident when his 2006 Dodge pickup made contact with a 2006 Buick.

Legal restrictions prevent announcing a public hearing earlier than 10 days prior, said Manager of Planning and Development Services Andrew McLeod.

“We are operating on a legal mandate.”

“It seems like you are trying to rush it through,” said Fairmont resident and WLLC shareholder Judy Roggeman.

“Understand the board’s situation,” said Area G director Gerry Wilkie. “The board was concerned because a land use decision was circumvented. We’d like to plug that loophole.” With a large number of Tembec lands sold, the board wants to be proactive and introduce regulations, Mr. Wilkie added.

Mr. Belanger opened the public hearing by announcing approximately 44 letters had been received in opposition to the bylaw with the common theme that it would adversely affect the subdivision at Whitetail Lake.

Eric Redeker, the first member of the public to speak, stated his opposition to the bylaw “because not only it affects my personal property and investments, but those of my colleagues.” The “loophole,” he said, was not a loophole. “It’s a piece of provincial legislation... I feel the regional district is starting on this process now to hinder our development.”

Reading from her letter submission, Mrs. Roggeman echoed his sentiments, stating the WLLC had spent over $8 million on the property and worked “very hard” to satisfy 90 per cent of the subdivision conditions, including the widening and improvement of the forest service roads, which should warrant exemption.

With six new directors, for the RDEK to hastily introduce this bylaw targeting Whitetail is “irresponsible” with dire consequences for WLLC, her letter read.

Mr. Benson repeated his concern with the approach RDEK was taking as the bylaw affects all zones in the Columbia Valley. “(This bylaw) cannot be rammed through the process to start the one-year clock,” he said, adding the numbers are limiting when applied to other land parcel sizes and “does not allow for creative phase development.”

The Columbia Valley Pioneer • 5 “Go back to your table and take time to understand the ramifications of this type of bylaw,” he said, also stating the WLLC should be exempt if the bylaw proceeds.

Countering the WLLC standpoint were Brent and Bill Dubois, whose family have owned nearby land since the early 1980s and have Crown recreation tenure as well as a trap line and cabin business. “My hat’s off to the regional district,” said Brent. “(The WLLC) say it’s not a loophole they found, but they did.”

“With this Strata Act, it’s gone through process, but the only people who knew about the process were WLLC — no one got a say,” he said. “I’m hearing complaints the public isn’t aware (of the proposed bylaw), but the public isn’t aware of Strata Act either.”

“I’m really disturbed that landowners around (Whitetail Lake) and the public were not consulted,” said Bill. “I totally support (this bylaw) — it’s one more restriction to stop whole land sale and the influx of people into a wild area.”

Support for the bylaw was also offered by Jessica Hildebrant, who has managed the contract for the Whitetail Lake public campsite for five years.

“Occupancy (of the sites) has been decreasing,” she said. “There are less outdoor users, complaints of noise and disruption to fishing, less fishermen, less campers… it would have been nice to have a say from the start.”

Earlier in the meeting, Bill Dubois voiced concern with how the bylaw was written, since if a developer meets all of the bylaw’s regulations with respect to minimum parcel size and density averaging, no public hearing is required. “Where does that leave other land owners?” he asked. Mr. Belanger confirmed there would be no public hearing in this case, based on the understanding that there is public process associated with the bylaw.

“I’ve heard countless times this bylaw brings a project to public, but it has nothing to do with it,” said Mr. Benson. “It’s lot averaging, nothing to do with zoning.

The public and regional district don’t have a say, which further emphasizes my point of the regional district ramming this through.”

“The bylaw changes the rules around lot averaging, and by narrowing options, it forces applications into the zoning process where there will be a public hearing,” responded Mr. McLeod. If adopted, what effect the bylaw would have on Whitetail Lake beyond one year is uncertain, said Mr. Belanger.

. . . ‘Deer’ from page 3 Traps are being set up mostly on private property, Mr. Taft said. Locations of the traps are at the discretion of district staff, but are situated in areas of greater concern. Those who support culling as a method of managing the urban deer population, and have deer concerns in the part of town they reside, can lodge a complaint to the district.

“Tell them that you wouldn’t be opposed to a trap on your property as a solution,” Mr. Taft said.

Meat from the deer is being processed at the local butcher shop, and will be given to the Columbia Valley Food Bank, and Mr. Taft said that other groups from Cranbrook and Kimberley are also interested in the venison meat.

One alternative to culling deer is to relocate them. But because of red tape, that practice is impractical right now, Mr. Taft said. “If the (province) wants to study the success of deer relocation, they need to set reasonable perimeters,” he said, citing the costly requirements. “Having to put $1,500 collars onto every deer is unreasonable.”

The IDPS could not be reached for comment.

Sympathy for the deer

It’s been three years since the District of Invermere attempted a cull, the Invermere Deer Protection Society halted the effort with an injunction, and concerned community members took to the streets with signs and placards protesting the cull and advocating for more humane solutions to solve the urban deer issue. Since then, it’s been discovered the principal in the IDPS lawsuit and his wife — Shane Suman and Monie Rahman — are guilty of insider trading by the Ontario Securities Commission and ordered to pay back almost $1 million in illegal profits as well as $500,000 in penalities and costs (and now the District of Invermere has its own share of costs to recoup); IDPS president Devin Kazakoff was caught vandalizing clover traps last February in Kimberley, shutting down the cull there (the court case is ongoing); and the district took the ethical question of culling deer to the Invermere public, which voted 74 per cent in favour of culling as a deer management method. Not only were they unsuccessful, but, ironically enough, the IDPS has given deer sympathizers a bad rep.

There are people in the valley who don’t support the IDPS but will be saddened by the news that a new cull has commenced — several of whom have written letters to the editor to this effect — despite the reasons behind it and despite the fact the process is quicker and less painful than what can occur in hunting. The urban deer, to some, are beautiful creatures that deserve our sympathy, and their presence is etched in our hearts like the silhouettes of the mountains surrounding us.

Canada proud and free Dear Editor: I have lived and worked in three countries and seven provinces. This country, no matter what Kim Baker says (see last week’s letter to editor: “What version of Canada do you want?”), has an admirable history and present. We are a free enterprise and democratic society. We all have the opportunity for choices in education, career, employment and, yes, political leadership. Yes, these opportunities may require work and effort, even more for some than others but our society is mobile and they are obtainable.

Democracy is not just about voting, it is about choice in the consumer goods we buy or don’t buy, in where or how we live. If you don’t like the job choices out there, start your own business, contribute. If you

don’t like the political figures out there, join a political party and help nominate those you think should be there. With regards to the aboriginal community, the two things that are needed are democracy and socioeconomic development. Current Chiefs are based more on inheritance and family patronage rather than functioning democracy.

Prime Minster Stephen Harper and Shawn Atleo put together a solid plan for aboriginal education, etc., and the Chiefs shot it down. We need the present paternal federal reserves to be changed to democratic municipalities with individual property ownership. The answer to most aboriginal situations is socio-economic.

Poverty, substance abuse and domestic issues would all be reduced with real jobs and income.

Killing cougars is not conservation Dear Editor: According to the Ministry of Environment’s Conservation Officer Service Program Plan (see page 18 at www.env. gov.bc.ca/cos/COS_program_plan.pdf ): “Conservation Officers are the first responder to human-wildlife conflicts.

(They) possess the necessary training, experience and equipment to deal with threats to public safety that may arise from human-wildlife conflicts.

To reduce the instances of humanwildlife conflict over the long term, (they) participate in numerous outreach and stewardship activities.

Reducing these conflicts is essential to preserving public safety, conserving biodiversity, reducing property damage, improving animal welfare and expending public resources more effectively and efficiently.”

So, which part of the “conserving biodiversity and improving animal welfare” was officer Greg Kruger adhering to when he killed (see last week’s Pioneer story “Conservation officers kill cougar on the prowl”) the partially blind cougar that was “becoming too habituated to humans”? Did reporter Steve Hubrecht ask the officer if other courses of action were considered?

I am not naive. I understand that a cougar is a predator, but the same initia-

tive it took him to drive up to CastleRock, load his gun with bullets and kill the cougar could have easily played out very differently. Did he consider relocation at all, or was killing the only plausible response?

In my layman’s opinion, he could have reached for the dart gun rather then the hand gun or rifle, loaded tranquilizers rather than bullets, still pulled a trigger, still physically removed the animal, but rather than destroying it (which I am sure costs the taxpayers something), he could have relocated it, letting it live. Same effort, different result.

All people want to do is kill animals.

Kill the deer, kill the cougar.

We share the mountains with the abundance of wildlife, so maybe if we want to peacefully coexist with them, we should build fences around our properties and communities, cover our garbage cans and pick the fruit in our gardens and hanging from our trees.

If, and only if, those options don’t work, should we explore other, perhaps more severe, possibilities.

We’re supposed to be smart with the capacity for reason and empathy, but sometimes we’re just barbarians with weapons, and that’s a very sad thing to know.

IMAGINE INVERMERE COMMUNITY SUSTAINABILITY PLAN

Grant Opportunities Invermere – What kind of community would you like Invermere to be in 20 years? How can we get there together? What are the steps we can take right now?

These questions were used to create Invermere’s Integrated Community Sustainability Plan, known as Imagine Invermere. The plan was adopted in 2011, and a committee was formed to help move it forward. This committee, called the Imagine Invermere Implementation Team, has been working hard, and several exciting projects have been completed or are underway.

One of the Team’s goals is to develop partnerships within the community with engaged citizens and community groups who are inspired to work together on initiatives that create a sustainable future.

To help these partnerships happen, the Team, along with the District of Invermere, is excited to announce the first round of the 2015 grant stream intake under the Imagine Invermere Granting Program.

Funding is available and will be awarded to registered not-for-profit societies or unincorporated local community associations, groups and service clubs who wish to further sustainability as outlined in the Imagine Invermere plan.

The Imagine Invermere Implementation Team is now accepting grant applications from groups interested in accessing the partnership fund. It is important that any proposals align well with the priorities in Imagine Invermere. Latest attack on freedom Dear Editor: While the rest of the world moves steadily towards more democracies and fewer autocracies, under Stephen Harper Canada bucks the trend. With the introduction of the new security bill C-51, the “Anti-Terrorism Act” now heading through Parliament, Harper has taken his move towards an authoritarian state to a much higher and much more frightening level.

Under this proposed legislation, CSIS, Canada’s security and intelligence gathering service, will be given new powers. These powers will effectively make CSIS a secret police force.

Harper claims the bill is necessary to fight “terrorism.” Unfortunately, or more likely purposely, the bill offers no definition of what exactly consti-

tutes terrorism. Given the utterances of some of Harper’s minions — Joe Oliver’s pronouncements about “radical extremists” opposed to pipelines come to mind — it is frightening to contemplate the future of free speech in Canada. For example, if you are opposed to anything that might slow the economic development of Canada, under this bill you could be labelled a “terrorist.”This letter will lead me to be branded as a terrorist, as I am questioning the power of the government.

Sadly, the bill will do nothing to stop the type of acts carried out last fall in Ontario and Quebec. Canada will be no safer with the bill, just a lot less free.

Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting is responsible for keeping highways safe to drive upon, which has proven to be a challenge in recent winter months.

Those involved with the Taking Back East Kootenay Highways Facebook group, which has nearly 1,900 members, believe that the solution is for the public sector to reassume responsibility of highway maintenance in the East Kootenay, as well as increase the minimum standards for winter highway service.

To send their message to Victoria, the group has been collecting signatures with an online petition, which will be presented in the B.C. Legislature by Norm Macdonald, MLA for Columbia River-Revelstoke.

electronic means, Mr. Macdonald doesn’t have much faith in its effect, as B.C.’s Legislative Assembly doesn’t currently have an official mechanism to officially register online or electronic petitions. Mr. Macdonald will have the option to present a physical print of the petition before Parliament, however.

“I intend to bring forward this petition in paper form if it is given to me,” Mr. Macdonald said.

To give electronic petitions as much consideration as physical petitions, the NDP tabled a Private Members’ Bill in November to allow all of them to be formally tabled in the Legislature.

“But unfortunately, the BC Liberals never allow Private Members’ Bills put forward by opposition members to be debated,” Mr. Macdonald said. “As a result, they never become law.

“I believe that one simple change to improve democracy would be to require all private members bills, regardless of who puts them forward, to at least have a chance at second reading debate.” that will not prevent me from using all my negotiation, interrogation and critical incident response skills learned over the years that the RCMP has taught me.

Crime rates drop in valley

Mr. Shehovac also said, in terms of spending human resources in the relatively remote Jumbo area, the majority of visits by RCMP to the observer camp in the Jumbo valley last summer were made just by Mr. Shehovac himself and on just a few occasions (one being a ministerial visit and the other the movement of concrete trucks into the upper valley) had there been three or four officers present.

“That (three or four officers) was overkill. But we simply didn’t know what to expect in those cases,” he said, adding that his personal visits, which he tried to do once a week, were an effort to establish a positive rapport with camp participants.

“I saw a big change in this past summer’s camp from the one the year previous (summer 2013 in the Farnham valley). This past year was just an observation camp. We had absolutely no issues. It was actually quite pleasant to go up there and talk to camp members,” said Mr. Shehovac. “The leadership dynamic was night and day different (than in summer 2013).”

Mr. Shehovac presented the same quarterly report to Canal Flats council during the Monday, January 26th council meeting there, and to Radium Hot Springs council on Wednesday, January 28th.

Columbia Valley RCMP Staff Sergeant Marko Shehovac has been appearing before the valley’s municipal councils and First Nations band councils, delivering the local detachment’s quarterly report.

At the Tuesday, January 27th Invermere council meeting, Mr. Shehovac highlighted the significant drop in crime rate across the valley seen by the Columbia Valley detachment in 2014.

“It stems from work (detachment) officers have done in going after prolific offenders,” he said.

Person violent criminal codes offenses dropped to 97 in 2014 from 141 in 2013; property crime offenses dropped to 304 in 2014 from 373 in 2013; and incidences of theft from motor vehicles fell to 24 in 2014 from 71 in 2013.

Invermere councillors commended Mr. Shehovac for the detachment’s good work in reducing crime in the valley.

“Drug and alcohol law enforcement remains our number one priority,” said Mr. Shehovac, speaking on the detachment’s priorities, adding that the local RCMP would continue to focus attention on the Kinsmen Beach area as council had requested in the past.

Mr. Shehovac said the detachment is unsure what its involvement will be up in the Jumbo valley area this coming summer. “We’re all watching to see what the provincial government decides with respect to the substantial start decision.

That will dictate how busy we’ll be up there,” he said.

Councillor Paul Denchuk inquired about the possibility of extra funding, either from the developer or the province, to pay for police services required in the area.

Career consideration

By Dan Walton Pioneer Staff A day of professional reflection will be encouraging local students to wrap their heads around what they want to be when they grow up.

On Wednesday, February 11th, David Thompson Secondary School (DTSS) will be hosting two occupational events — Find Your Fit by WorkBC, and a locally organized career fair in the evening.

Every student and teacher will be spending one block of their day to experience WorkBC’s Find Your Fit program — DTSS was the only school to be selected as a host in the East Kootenay. During Find Your Fit, students will be familiarized with hands-on careers that are currently in demand across the province, and which skills are needed to fill them. After school’s out, Find Your Fit will become open to the community between 3:30 and 7 p.m.

“It opens their eyes to professions and skills that they might not have heard of before, and that we might not be able to

show them on a local scale,” said DTSS teacher Crystal Woodworth, who is organizing the events.

To boost the visit by Find Your Fit, Ms. Woodworth has also invited local professionals to share their wisdom during a DTSS career fair.

While it’s intended to expose students to career opportunities, the career fair is also meant to give students a chance to learn the nitty gritty of full-time work.

“It’s not about students going around and finding out where they can get a summer job — it’s about kids finding out what it means to be a financial planner; what does it mean to be a dietician. That’s the focus.”

Local professionals have been encouraged to share their stories with students about how they ended up in their respective profession. Ms. Woodworth would like to see the guest professionals explain how career paths are often unpredictable.

“I would like the kids to hear that life is about putting down a whole lot of dots, and eventually they connect into something,” she said.

GALS fundraiser grows for its fourth year

The annual Puppy Love Fundraiser has outgrown Fire Vixen Tattoos’ studio, so the local tattoo parlour is bringing in more artists and growing its event, moving into the Invermere Community Hall for its fourth year.

In the valley’s biggest venue, four artists from Cranbrook will be in town to take on more clients. The external talent will be coming from Runaway Elephant Tattoos and Pin Up Tattoos.

“We’ll have the tattooing set up like a mini convention,” said Sarah Eastick, owner and artist at Fire Vixen.

Puppy Love is happening on Valentine’s Day, Saturday, February 14th. The tattooing marathon will run its regular hours 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Fire Vixen will be prolonging the love this year with a party from 8 p.m. until 1 a.m.

Live music will be running through

both portions of Puppy Love, with L8, the Halfsacks, and disc jockeys on the bill, as well as face painters and the Amazing Jeremy. Check Fire Vixen’s Facebook page to learn the schedule.

“Every year we’ve done it, we’ve doubled the money we’ve made. Last year, we made $6,200 dollars. So if we’re going to double it again, we need to expand — and I always love a good reason to throw a party,” said Sarah.

Those looking for a tattoo during Puppy Love are best to book an appointment ahead of time with Fire Vixen, as walk-ins will be difficult to accommodate during the event. And to make room for as many people as possible, the artists are only offering tattoos as large as business cards.

Rising to the curling challenge On the Button

By Stephen Lebovits Pioneer Columnist Hmm. I was going to start my second column with a clever quote, something akin to: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,” but decided that it was too foreboding.

Instead, I decided to pull out the trusty, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” because this one truly exemplifies the spirit that enveloped Invermere’s 2015 Bonspiel on the Lake.

Leading up to the Invermere Curling Club’s annual fundraiser, everything was going according to plan — up until 4 p.m. on Friday, January 23rd that is. As the first 16 teams took to the eight sheets beautifully crafted on Lake Windermere, the snow came.

Thick, wet flakes fell and fell and fell.

The patio lanterns glowed yellow as dusk crept over the afternoon sky.

And the Snowflake Festival was getting in gear for what is usually a festive and fun night of food, frivolity, fireworks, sliding and sweeping.

I was to play my first match at 7 p.m., until I got the call from my skip

— too slushy, the rocks wouldn’t move down the sheets. All matches will take place at the curling centre, possibly all weekend. Whoa! That was good and bad. The good is that the ice would be as true as possible, perhaps an advantage to those who play on it regularly. The bad was that the Xfactor was now gone — the outdoor ice being the great equalizer, on which anything could happen.

Quickly, the team of organizers and volunteers met to decide the event’s fate. What to do, what to do? Well, do they did. Games were shortened from 6 ends to 4, while the schedule stretched from 7:30 a.m. starts to 4 a.m. finishes. I know. I was there, at least for some of it. Curling for insomniacs! But from what I witnessed, everyone took it all in stride.

The participants were just happy to be hurrying hard at all hours of the day and night. In the end, from the 64 teams that participated, four were crowned the victors, standing proud atop their respective divisions. Yes, there were runners up, but truly, this year, everyone won. Curlers and fans were treated to fun and exciting matches, practically around the clock.

Libations flowed, food was devoured and everyone had a good old time.

So, raise a glass of lemonade to all those who worked on and participated in the 2015 Lake Spiel. Toast the winners, local teams Young and Horning, and Calgary teams Kerr and Sorochan. To the winners went the spoils, but on that late-January weekend, no losers were to be found.

Just an FYI: while the curling season keeps marching forward, there are still events to participate in and watch.

Most notably will be the Men’s Spiel taking place the weekend of February 13th, 14th and 15th — always a good, competitive time. And let’s not forget those Friday drop-ins. For $10, you get a slider, a broom, some basic instruction and loads of fun. The only way to know is to give it a go!

One last note of congratulations must go out to Edmonton’s Marusiak team that battled the local Luyendyk contingent to the last stone before winning this past weekend’s The Good, The Bad and The Ugly Sweater Spiel.

Valley life before refrigerators Curator’s Corner

By J.D. Jeffery Museum Curator Ice fishing and cutting ice are historical winter activities that happened on the lake. In her story on growing up in Windermere, Violet Richardson Bridger Andrews wrote the following memories of these activities: “Many people went ice fishing on Lake Windermere during January and February. The cold weather didn’t seem to discourage anyone; they would just dress warmly and stay out as long as it was light. Harry (her brother) caught many fish down at the mouth of Windermere Creek and he kept lines out through the ice, day and night during the winter.”

As for the cutting of ice, Violet wrote: “There were no refrigerators back then, so everyone stored ice to keep water and food fresh when the hot weather came around.

The ice-cutting operation usually took place in late January or early February. Blocks varied a little in size, but I’d say the average was around two feet square and usually very thick. The ice was cut with an ice saw. Each block had to be pulled out by hand and would be wet on the bottom. After the ice was cut, it was put onto sleighs and hauled by a team of horses. Once the ice was hauled to a person’s home, it was put up in the icehouse. The ice blocks would be stacked together

and covered well with sawdust.”

This past fall, the museum received a donation of an icehouse. It’s a small building, but this month it will be open to look inside.

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff In a valley full of successful, entrepreneurial women in business, Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce executive director Susan Clovechok stands out.

by Kootenay Business Magazine with an Influential Women in Business Award, which she says was both unexpected and humbling.

Susan Clovechok “It’s an honour and it was a surprise because there are so many great women from our area who were nominated. Anytime you are recognized for doing something you love, it’s great,” she said.

Prior to her time with the Chamber of Commerce, Mrs. Clovechok was involved with many businesses in cities across the country — from Victoria and Vancouver to Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal — in a variety of roles in sales, marketing, leadership and training, and management.

“My career has been really diverse and has evolved into more general management,” she said. “The underlying factor of every position has been supporting others to be successful in what they do.”

Mrs. Clovechok, who grew up on Salt Spring Island, credits her upbringing for her success.

“It comes down to the values I was raised with,” she said, adding that she was one of four sisters and gender was never even a consideration in her household.

“I’ve never seen being a woman as a barrier in any way shape or form, in business or in anything else. My dad would tell us that being a woman didn’t mean we couldn’t do whatever we wanted,” she said.

Mrs. Clovechok’s main piece of advice to other women in business is to help each other out.

“Support each other to be successful. Celebrate the success of others, share ideas, mentor each other and always be willing to learn and improve,” she said, adding that the Chamber’s new business mentorship program (which is open to anyone) serves exactly this purpose.

“The business mentorship program is a great example of how the Chamber can support businesses to succeed. Often as business owners, we know what we do in our business, but need help with the other parts of (running a) business such as business planning, financial planning, growth strategies, human resources and so on. The business mentorship program offers business owners a ‘safe’ place to have conversations and gain perspectives from people who have experience and knowledge in business,” she said.

s obituary s Warbrick, Max Max Warbrick earned his angel wings on January 31st after a long fight with Menkes disease. His friends and family, whom he had touched in many ways throughout his short but very memorable life, surrounded him during his final days. There are many people who would say that his life was too short, but the people that knew him understood that it was about the quality of life and not the quantity in which he lived.

Although Max’s disease made him frail sometimes, he had so much strength, determination, and had the ability to overcome any challenges that he faced. The courage that he possessed taught us that it is important to enjoy the little things life offers, and we know that life with him was a blessing. We will miss him everyday especially his smile, because he could light up a whole room when he did.

Max would spend hours looking at the toys hanging from the ceiling above his spot with his loved ones around him. He loved to be at school with his friends and teachers it was one of his favorite places to be. He also loved to spend time playing cars with his big brother.

Max leaves behind many wonderful caregivers who gave him love and support that enhanced his quality of life. Max’s love extends to his nurse Joan, his school aides Nicole, Jennifer and Lisa, and the numerous doctors who helped to give him dignity in his life and his death. These are things, which we are so grateful for and will never be able to repay.

With his passing we are reminded that his life is one to be celebrated, he taught us many life lessons that we will carry with us forever. Through the life lessons he taught us we were able to make many memories and it was a privilege to have him be a part of our lives.

Max is survived by his loving parents Laura Palmer and Doug Warbrick; brother Bill Warbrick; paternal grandparents Rosalita Pascal and Wallace Warbrick; maternal grandparents Larry and Teresa Palmer; and many aunts, uncles and many more cousins.

It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother Gladys May Downey after a brief illness on Thursday, January 29th, 2015 in Invermere, B.C. Gladys was born in Albion Township, Peel Co., Ontario on June 18th, 1923. She was the fifth child born of eleven. You could always find a warm smile on Gladys’ face as she worked in her garden, cleaned her chicken house or baked her famous tarts.

Gladys was predeceased by her husband Vernon Downey in May 1967, and her son-in law Ralph. She is survived by her children Verna (Bob), Mary Lou (Del), Betty and Greg (Petra), two sisters and three brothers. Gladys was always very proud of her 10 grandchildren and many great grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Page and all the staff at the Invermere and District Hospital for their professional and compassionate treatment.

There will be a wake held this Friday night at 6 p.m. with the service to follow on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at the Shuswap band office.

A private memorial service for Gladys will be held in Cranbrook for her family with a celebration of her life held at a later date in Fairmont, B.C. which we extend an invitation to all of her friends. Gladys will be laid to rest in Bolton, Ontario on Friday, February 6th, 2015. In lieu of flowers, donations in her honour may be made to a charity of your choice.

Recipe Of The Week BUTTERNUT SQUASH BAKE

1 (4 lb) Butternut Squash, 1 tbsp fresh Thyme, peeled, seeded and cubed minced 1/3 Onion, minced 6 oz Blue or Feta Cheese, ¼ cup Olive Oil crumbled ¾ cup Italian Bread Crumbs Salt and Pepper to taste Preheat oven to 425F degrees.

Toss the squash, onion, olive oil, ½ cup bread crumbs, thyme and cheese in a large mixing bowl.

Season with salt and pepper. Pour mixture into a large baking dish.

Sprinkle remaining ¼ cup of bread crumbs over the squash.

Bake for 40 minutes until squash is soft and browned on top.

God’s love will never fail

By Laura Hermakin Reverend Christ Church Trinity As someone who has a passion for serving God and loving God’s people, faith is very important to me. So is grace. Like most of you, I was born into a storm-filled world, yet in my mother’s protective arms, I heard a quiet whisper from God. Before I was in my mother’s womb, God knew me. God called me to serve God’s people before I was even formed. Of course, I don’t remember that far back, but in my first year of life I was baptized into the family of God and my church was a place of great love and acceptance; and so I was formed in love and grace.

As a little girl, curled up in my mother’s lap, she told me I was Jesus’ special child and Jesus was my best friend and that I should always tell him whatever I was thinking, because he would always take care of me.

And, you know, he has always been there, just as my mother promised. I have gotten myself into a lot of messes, but God has always loved me through them.

That’s the thing about grace. No matter how much you

mess up, God just keeps on pouring out love on you.

My mother gave me the incredible gift of faith and God has never failed to honour me with love. I’ve never known a time in my life when I didn’t know God’s love.

There are many faithful people who answer God’s call to love God and all of God’s children passionately.

I challenge you to live and lead with that radical commitment in whatever you do. We all start at the same place… in God’s heart of love. God loves each of us completely as beloved children and God has called each of us to accept this love and to demonstrate that love for others.

Remember, please, that God’s love is very different from human love and we have to first really come to believe that we are loved more intensely than any person may have demonstrated to us. God’s love is unconditional and isn’t based on feelings or emotions. God doesn’t love us because we’re loveable or because we make God feel good.

Decide to see others as God sees them. Act on this decision rather than whether you feel the emotions of love. The love you have for others must start with God. Ask God to give you this gift. Pray for God to reveal to you the way God sees these other people in your life, especially the difficult people you deal with. Seeing another person as God sees them is not always easy, but when we get it right, this love will never fail. This love is a gift from God, which is still the more excellent way.

Sixty years of Legion service Three members of the Ladies’ Auxiliary Branch 71 of the Royal Canadian Legion had the pleasure of visiting June Florence at her home in Invermere on January 27th to present the branch’s first-ever sixty-year membership pin. Although the Invermere branch was not formed until 1956, June joined her hometown Legion branch in Battleford, Saskatchewan in 1954 and thus achieved her sixty-year membership in 2014. Now, at the age of ninety, June has been a member of this branch for the past eighteen years and was active in the local auxiliary until recently. Those who held nothing but the S&P/TSX Composite Index during the market correction of 2008-2009 would have seen their portfolios temporarily decline by 50 per cent.
