Highest accreditation awarded to Shuswap centre

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff The Three Voices of Healing Society Wellness Centre on the Shuswap Indian Band reservation has earned the highest accreditation possible for a health treatment centre in Canada.

“We received our accreditation with exemplary status, passing with a score of 98.9 per cent, so we’re pretty happy about that,” said Three Voices executive director Delena Tikk. “Only two other places in Canada have ever gotten a higher score, and one of them was Mount

Sinai Hospital in Toronto.”

Three Voices is a non-profit society that runs a 43bed residential, alcohol and drug addiction treatment facility for First Nations. The centre initially achieved its accreditation (which has to be renewed every three years) through Health Canada by Accreditation Canada in 2005 when the centred was located in Creston. It was during this year’s renewal (2014) that the society passed with such flying colours.

The accreditation organization marks each health treatment centre on not just the state of its facilities, but also on governance, education and management. Exem-

plary standing is for organizations that go beyond the requirements of Accreditation Canada and demonstrate excellence in quality improvement, said Accreditation Specialist Pamela Naymark in an email. “This status is especially rare to achieve on-site and has not been awarded as a result of follow-up.”

Three Voices scored perfectly on 373 of the 380 criteria that Accreditation Canada measured.

“The only thing that prevented us from getting a completely perfect score is that there is no formal evacuation plan in place for the Regional District of East Kootenay.

Faithful advice: I read with interest Pastor Trevor Hagan’s article (The Pioneer, Nov. 28th) “A gift of expectancy” where he questions when it is appropriate, or the rule of when, Christmas decorations and music should be played. Fraud alert: The Columbia Valley detachment has received information that a male identifying himself as Mr. Watson from Canada Revenue Agency has been phoning people stating they should call him as soon as possible or there will be a tax lien against them.

• On Thursday, December 4th at 6:50 a.m., the detachment responded to a single vehicle accident involving a 97 Chev Lumina on Hwy 93/95 near Wagon Wheel Frontage Rd. Vehicle was south bound and lost control on slippery road entering the north bound lane and ended up in the ditch. The driver was later located at the hospital with nonlife threatening injuries.

• On Thursday, December 4th at 7:52 a.m., the detachment received a report of stolen car that, it was quickly learned, was not in fact stolen. A brief investigation revealed the car was left warming up in the driveway and slid away and went down an embankment out of sight.

• On Thursday, December 4th at 5 p.m., the detachment received a complaint of theft of FedEx packages from a 2007 GMC Savanna cube van that was left parked broken down on Highway 93/95 near Canal Flats.

• On Friday, December 5th at 2 p.m., as a result of information brought forward by Child and Family Services, an investigation was initiated into a complaint of sexual interference and assault. The investigation resulted in the arrest of a 32-year-old male from Invermere. The male will appear in Invermere Provincial Court on February 16th.

The male was soon arrested, breaching his release conditions given to him by the police. The male was brought before a Justice of the Peace and released on strict conditions.

• On Friday, December 5th at 9:30 p.m., the detachment received a complaint of theft of four propane tanks from The Family Pantry in Canal Flats. The investigation is continuing.

• On Friday, December 5th at 8:40 p.m., the detachment received a complaint of a 39-year-old male from Invermere breaching a condition ordering him not to attend a residence on his own. The detachment was informed that the male had breached this condition. On December 7th, the male attended to the detachment, was arrested and brought before a Justice of the Peace where he was released with modified conditions.

• On Saturday, December 6th at 12:30 a.m., detachment officers responded to a disturbance complaint of a large group of males fighting outside of a local bar. A number of youths were located, resulting in a 22-year-old male being arrested for drunk in public. The male was released when sober along with a ticket under the Liquor Licensing Act for being drunk in public.

• On Saturday, December 6th at 9:41 p.m., detachment officers responded to a disturbance at Purcell Drive in Fairmont. While at the scene, a 45-year-old female from Fairmont drove up to the officer in a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The female displayed signs of having consumed liquor. An ASD demand was read at which time the driver blew a fail. Driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle impounded.

• On Sunday, December 7th at 12:42 a.m., detachment officers attended to an assault complaint on Kootenay Road No. 3. A 36-year-old male was arrested for assault and lodged in cells until sober. The victim did not wish to pursue assault charges.

Fairmont ski slopes ready for opening day

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff The Fairmont ski area is gearing up for an exciting season, with snowmaking already underway on the resort’s slopes.

“We started making snow 10 days earlier in the season than we did last year, and that is a good sign. We’re excited for the upcoming winter,” said Fairmont Hot Springs resort director of sales and marketing Nancy Hetherington.

The ski area is set to open on Friday, December 19th and the Aquafina Tube Park — a new addition last year — will be back again this season.

Shuswap success

It’s the unfortunate nature of media that bad news grabs the headlines and gets people talking above all else. However, one can argue that this trend is more prevalent among provincial and national media than at the community level, based simply on the fact that they serve much larger populations and don’t have the same intimate ties that a community newspaper arguably has.

At the community level, a reader’s submitted photo of his or her cat doing something cute has a pretty good chance of getting published.

At the provincial and national media level, not so much.

Perfect example: the Shuswap scandal, when it was discovered that ex-chief Paul Sam and his family had been siphoning off millions from the band’s revenue for years. Overnight, the Shuswap band became a national household name, garnering more attention in less time than the controversial Jumbo Glacier Mountain Resort Municipality.

The valley’s tourism committee, which is working away diligently to promote the Lake Windermere Whiteway now that it’s broken the Guinness record for the world’s longest outdoor skating trail, can only wish for an iota of that blinding spotlight the Shuswap scandal yanked our way.

Shortly on the heels of the scandal, a good news story has come out of the Shuswap Band.

The addiction centre that relocated to Shuswap traditional territory in 2012 has been awarded the highest score that a health services centre in Canada, hospitals included, can earn.

This is an incredible feat for a small treatment centre, and a very rare achievement for a facility of any size.

Three Voices of Healing Society executive director Delena Tikk is clearly an inspirational visionary who has set a new standard for treatment centres of this kind across our country.

It’s a shame the national media hasn’t picked up this feel-good story to share with other Canadians, but at the community level, it’s not going unnoticed.

Trying to understand Jumbo Resort Dear Editor:

I’ve been searching long and hard for a reason why Jumbo Glacier Resort should receive approval from the Ministry of Environment therefore allowing them to continue construction on one of the most controversial land use decisions in this province’s history. And that reason is simply it wouldn’t be very professional of the BC Liberals to not grant approval to a project being undertaken by a financial supporter of the party.

It makes complete sense that the voting public that opposes the project would be ignored.

It also makes sense that taxpayers will fund the democratic processes at the Jumbo Municipality as well as bridges and access to the resort (even though we had assurances from the proponent that not a dime of taxpayer money would fund infrastructure, roads and access).

The only thing that wouldn’t make sense is failing to accommodate Christy Clark and Bill Bennett’s crony campaign supporters — that would make a mockery of our oligarchy.

Local PACs encouraged to apply for gaming grants The Province distributes $135 million in community gaming grants to benefit over 5,000 local organizations representing virtually every community in the province.

The following local community organizations that have received gaming grants to date in the government fiscal year 2014/2015 are as follows: • In Edgewater, the Steamboat Mountain Music Society received $2,850 in the Arts and Culture sector under the Fairs, Festivals, Museums sub sector.

• In Invermere, the Columbia Valley Arts Council received $29,000 in the Arts and Culture sector under the Adult Arts and Culture sub sector.

• In Invermere, the Columbia Valley Figure Skating Club received $17,200 in the Sport sector under the Sports for Youth sub sector.

• In Invermere, the Columbia Valley Rockies Booster Society received $15,000 in the Sport sector under Sports for Youth sub sector.

• In Radium Hot Springs, the Columbia Valley Swim Club received $8,000 in the Sport sector under Sports for Youth.

Parent Advisory Committees (PACs) that provide support for extracurricular sports, arts, class trips and other school activities are also eligible.

This fiscal year, PACs across the province will share $11,334,300 in community

gaming grants. A total of $11,216,800 will go to 1,435 PACs and $117,500 to 47 District Parent Advisory Committees (DPACs) in communities throughout the province.

“We know parents contribute directly to the success of their children, and their involvement in the education system plays a pivotal role in each community. These B.C. Gaming grants provide funding to local parent advisory committees so they can purchase playground and sports equipment, musical instruments and also support other opportunities for students,” said Education Minister Peter Fassbender.

According to Community, Sport and Cultural Development Minister Coralee Oakes, “Schools in British Columbia provide an excellent quality of education for children and youth in communities throughout the province. Community gaming grants help enrich the school experience with appropriate extra-curricular opportunities that parents can support through PACs and DPACs working together with teachers and school administrators.”

Gaming grant applicants must be the PAC or DPAC for a school that delivers the K-12 curriculum. There must be at least two parents willing to be accountable for the funds. Applicants can contact Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch at 250 387-5311 for advice about applications.

About a year after that, Ms. O’Connor was forced to spend time away from the valley after her mother passed away.

Before becoming ill, Doc worked as a mechanic, and always does his best to share his handiness even though he is unable to work.

“He will drop everything to come and look and try to fix your problem,” said Ms. O’Connor.

Both Doc and Connie will be at Sunday’s fundraiser. The event begins at 4 p.m.

So off I go to his house in a police car in the evening, angle the car with the headlights facing his front door, activate the police lights and get on the blow horn, calling out, “Big Al, we know you are in the house, come out with your hands in the air.” Then: “We know you are in there Big Al, so come out or we are coming in.” I don’t know if he is having much interaction with his neighbours of late.

Valley food bank helps get J. A. Laird students cooking

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff Students at J.A. Laird Elementary School are cooking up a storm, with help from the Columbia Valley Food Bank.

The Cooking Program is now in its third year, and has been a smash success, according to those involved.

“It’s been absolutely great and it grows every year,” said J.A. Laird teacher Kyler Gauthier. “The program is a great way to engage students in school and help to build a sense of community within our classrooms.”

The program, which is funded by the local food bank, runs every Thursday and Friday and involves five students preparing a meal or snack and then serving it to their classmates. All classes in school participate, with different students cooking each time.

Movie Review: Guardians of the Galaxy So the story goes like this.

Graphic novel people, you probably know this already. Peter Quill’s (aka Starlord) mother dies. Then he gets… I don’t know if it’s an abduction or what, okay… transported onto a spaceship at the start of the movie. The next scene opens up with him dancing along to a song from the ‘70s while plotting to steal an Infinity Stone.

After trying to sell the Stone, he gets captured by the police after being attacked by Rocket and Groot and being assaulted by Gamora.

They get locked up in prison,

Reviewed by Christopher Midyette DTSS Grade 8 student The first time I saw this movie, I thought: GREAT, another dark superhero story like Superman! But after that first moment, I was confused. Then after about 30 minutes, I loved the style. So I’m going to shut up and start this review.

So this movie casts Chris Pratt as Starlord (who was the voice for the lead character in The Lego Movie. Great film by the way, totally recommend it). He’s getting all the good roles. They’ve also got Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket (my personal favourite), and Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot.

And the Guardians must go to this super city to protect it from destruction.

The movie is amazing. It has amazing musical hits from the ‘60s and ‘70s and the action scenes are better than a Michael Bay movie. What makes this movie are the characters themselves. And there are so many WOW and humorous moments that make it great.

The only problem I have with it is the whole final battle in the end, which was a bit weird. The movie is nearly perfect so I give it an 11/10. A must-see on the small screen. Rent it now.

Wilmer residents Pat and Baiba Morrow have been climbing in, hiking in and experiencing the culture of the Himalayas since 1982, and have put together some of their best images and memories of the region in an e-book Heart of the Himalaya.

“Here in Canada we go into the mountains when we feel we need to get away from people,” said Mr. Morrow.

“But the Himalayas we go to in order to meet people, to end up having tea in a nomad’s tent on a 5,000-metre plateau. It’s humbling and inspiring.”

New Christmas market Last minute Christmas shoppers in the valley will be glad to know a new Christmas market showcasing home-based valley businesses is starting up at Pynelogs this year, held just five days before Christmas Day. “The current Christmas Fair (which was held December 6th and 7th) is so popular that some vendors can’t fit, so we saw there was room for another one a few weeks later. Being closer to Christmas Day, people can get stocked up for Christmas dinner with desserts and treats. Three Torontonian comics are touring across Canada this winter, and they’ve appropriately titled their show the “Weather Permitting Tour”, attempting to navigate their way in an imported sedan.

The trio is made up of Michelle Christine, Andrew Barr and Michael Flakmank. They’ll be bringing their jokes to the Great Hall at Panorama Mountain Resort on Wednesday, December 17th.

“You can find a funny thought on just about anything. What makes a comic unique is that they have an interesting perspective on life,” Michelle said. “Which is why you often find them funny, because they make you think about something in a way that you’ve never thought of it before.”

Michelle, Andrew, and Michael rotate the order of their performances each night. Their styles differ slightly and all compliment one another, Michelle said.

She said Michael’s jokes are presented in a longer form, often to do with observational humour. She mentioned how the crew was culture-shocked to see Canadian Tire stores in Western Canada advertising the sale of guns and ammo.

“Not something Canadian Tire would advertise in Toronto. City folk are sort of sheltered from that lifestyle.”

Michelle said they’re excited to perform at a ski resort, as their jokes tend to do well among the mountain life culture.

“Young crowds out to have fun, liberal viewpoints, the same sort of laid back mentality we have. People who come to snowboard don’t usually have a uptight attitude.”

With Panorama Mountain Resort opening up to the public today, the ski season has begun in the valley, and the ski resort is kicking the season off with its Discovery Weekend.

Panorama is using its seasonal debut to proudly show off the new Discovery Zone, which will be of major benefit for beginner and intermediate skiers.

“We have totally reshaped the area around the base of the mountain so that access to our beginner terrain is quick and easy,” said Jamie Hurschler, Panorama’s marketing and media specialist.

The Discovery Zone includes the pre-existing Silver Platter tow rope and Red Carpet, and has grown with a the Discovery Quad and Little Ripper magic carpet, eliminating the hike between the beginner area and outside of the Great Hall.

While the Discovery Zone will be in full operation today (Friday, De-

cember 12th), the ceremonial opening takes place tomorrow, Saturday, December 13th at 9 a.m.

“There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony and a prize plaque awarded to winner of name the chairlift competition — Nat McGrath,” Mr. Hurshler said.

Nat and his friends will be the first to ride the quad after the ribbon cutting.

After that, skiers and boarders will have the option to try the new chair for just $2 per ride.

If you’re a resident of the Columbia Valley, Panorama invites you to Community Appreciation Day, where lift tickets will cost just $2 for the whole day, with proceeds going to the Panorama Foundation.

And turning the mountain white has never been easier for the snowmaking team, who are now equipped with upgraded snow guns and a higher quality formula for artificial precipitation.

Additionally, low temperatures in the valley over the past month have been very favourable for snowmaking.

Understanding immigrants Fresh old ideas

By Arnold Malone Pioneer Columnist Immigrants have come to Canada from every corner of the planet. They have added to our cultural diversity, expanded our tastes in foods, music, changed our dress and made us more understanding and interesting.

Immigrants have run our restaurants, cleaned our floors, tilled our soils, built our railroads, mined our minerals and manufactured our products. With the exception of First Nations, our ancestors or us have immigrated from somewhere. With immigration comes the blending of humanity.

My own father was a grandson of an Irish immigrant. He had some speech patterns unlike our neighbours, but four generations later such phrases were frequent upon our ears when we toured Ireland. Old habits die slowly. Arriving from England or the United States, the difference might only be the accent. When the cultural shift is major, the transition can be a life-long challenge.

Some immigrants have one-syllable names while other have names that read like an optometrist’s eye chart. Immigrants come here believing we have freedom and opportunity.

They come in spite of their erroneous notions about Canada. Freedom has such a powerful pull. An Iranian immigrant said she thought “all Canadians wore glasses to prevent their eyes from freezing shut.”

I read that the father of a newly arrived family had answered the doorbell to find a

postal worker. The postman departed with the words: “I will see you later.” The father waited outside for 40 minutes before concluding the postman was not coming back.

A Chinese family had settled into their home for only a couple of days when their doorbell rang. It was the end of October. At their door was a person with a spike through his skull, another with one eye hanging from a socket, an angel and a person with an ugly face dressed in a prison suit. Each was holding a bag and expecting something. Halloween is not an event in China or in many other countries.

The adjustment for immigrants to a new culture requires the re-making of oneself. They could struggle over such a simple notion as, “How close should I stand when speaking to someone?” In some cultures, business is conducted toe-to-toe, within another’s breath stream. I once watched a briefing film where a Mediterranean government official walked a new Western ambassador backwards around a desk, twice, within an hour. It is a cultural norm for persons in some Middle East countries to do business while standing closer than a metre apart, a distressing distance for many Westerners. Ironically, both persons were doing the exact same thing — trying to get comfortable in their personal communication space.

Culture is not right or wrong; it just is.

Characteristics we think are odd for others might be a mirror image of our own habits.

Year-end financial strategies As the year winds to a close, there are a few taxrelated financial strategies people should consider to ensure their affairs are in order for 2015 and beyond. Here are a few of them.

interest as the government’s prescribed rate, which is one per cent until the end of 2014. In fact, the one per cent interest rate will remain in effect for the duration of the loan, regardless of changes to the prescribed rate.

Tax-loss selling Tax-loss selling is the act of selling investments with accrued losses at year end to offset capital gains realized elsewhere. The gains could come from one’s investment portfolio, sale of real estate, or other assets.

Capital losses may be carried forward indefinitely, or carried backwards up to three years. It should be noted that capital losses can only be used to offset capital gains, not other taxable sources such as earned income or dividends.

To be sure that the loss can be applied to one’s 2014 tax return, the trade must take place no later than December 24th, 2014. This will ensure that settlement occurs in the 2014 tax year.

Final RRSP contributions Most people with a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) know that the contribution deadline often falls on March 1st of the following calendar year. Those who turned 71 years of age in 2014, however, have until December 31st, 2014 to make their final RRSP contribution. This is because on January 1st, 2015, their RRSP will be converted to a Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF).

While most people born in 1943 no longer make RRSP contributions, there are circumstances where it could make sense. People who had earned income in 2014, or those who disposed of a major taxable asset such as a business or investment property, may wish to offset some of the taxation.

Further, RRSP contributions don’t have to be used in the current calendar year. They can be carried forward to offset future capital gains, which could come in handy if the sale of an asset will fall or settle in a future calendar year.

Income splitting Those who are in a high tax bracket may want to allocate some of their investment income to a lowerincome spouse or child. Due to attribution rules, simply giving the money to a family member could result in the income being attributed back to the giver.

To avoid attribution, money may be lent to family members, as long as the lender charges at least as much

CPP Benefits People between ages 60 and 64 who are considering taking their Canada Pension Plan (CPP) benefits early may want to apply by December 31st, 2014 to lock in a lower “downward monthly adjustment factor”.

This means that people who started taking CPP payments in 2014 will have a reduction of 0.56 per cent for each month before age 65 that payments were received. In 2015, this amount is increasing to 0.58 per cent for those who start taking CPP payments on January 1st, 2015 or later.

Final thoughts Effective tax planning doesn’t always start in January.

By keeping these factors and others in mind throughout the year, better financial planning can occur.

As with any tax strategy, be sure to discuss in advance with your financial advisor and accountant to ensure suitability.

Matching mentors with businesses In an effort to create a stronger, more resilient local business community, the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce is planning to launch an ambitious new program that aims to pair business owners with experienced mentors.

The first Business Mentorship Program event will be organized to connect like-minded individuals as soon as ten local businesses and ten mentors have registered.

“Once we have that number, we’re going to organize an event that’s like speed dating,” said Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce executive director Susan Clovechok. “During the speed dating event we’ll explain how successful mentoring relationships work and what the responsibilities are for both parties.”

Stuff, stuff, inglorious stuff

Family Ties

Perhaps it’s our huntergatherer instincts as humans that drive us to bring items into our homes, be it food, toiletries, pillows for our nest, whatever.

Like all living things, we do it for survival. We hunt (or shop) and gather.

With that said, a large percentage of what we bring into our home is non-essential; perhaps it’s just a comfort or a luxury item, like the ridiculously expensive kingsized mattress we have — non-essential, but oh-so-grand! And then there’s the unnecessary, the excessive, and the overly excessive.

With children, the notion of minimalism becomes quite tricky. It’s a very fine balance and a concept I sometimes find difficult to manage. When it was just Dave and I, we were pretty good at managing our stuff.

For one, we were transient... like, supremely transient — itchy feet on an annual basis!

But above all else, we didn’t have the cash flow to acquire a whole lot. Now with two wee ones, it’s not as easy.

I, as any mom, love to see the joy that a new toy brings. Oliver certainly has his fair share of things that go: trucks, trains, cars, dinosaurs, more trucks and lots of other goodies that he’s acquired in his two and a half years of life. All of which he plays with and enjoys for the most part. This kid lives life to the fullest, no stopping, always playing. Hazel, well, so far she’s got hand-me-downs and a few odds

and ends... the joy of being a second child. I sure hope she takes a liking to planes, trains and automobiles!

I haven’t really read much on the topic, nor am I an expert on the concept of minimalism, but I do consider it one of our family’s priorities.

I guess we have our reasons, just like every parent has their reasons, for how they run their households.

For one, clutter and the management of stuff is not a job I enjoy tackling, and two (and most obvious, I think), we don’t want entitled, spoiled rotten kiddos. Lastly, I hope we can ingrain a giving spirit. All high hopes for a toddler, I know, but worth a shot.

I read a tidbit in a book once about giving away (or tossing out) five items in your house per day. I jotted the idea down in my journal long ago and, as I was leafing through it the other day, I saw the note. That seems crazy, right? There’d be nothing left in your house after a year. Although ever since I re-read the note, I’ve begun to like the idea more and more. It could be anything: an old pen that is out of ink, a T-shirt you never wear, clothing the kids have outgrown, unused non-perishable items to the food bank, or perhaps your child would like to give away a toy he or she no longer plays with.

I’ve already started to plant the seed of toy giving. He seems to be in agreement thus far, although I’m not sure exactly how much of the idea he grasps.

or too much, we’re overwhelmed, forget they even exist, let them go by the wayside, don’t care for them properly and, worst of all, have to live amongst clutter. Less is more, yes indeed!

To prove a point on the necessity of toys, Ollie spent much of his weekend playing with a baggie full of dice with his Grandma Daisy.

They would stack them up high and “crash” knock them over; they’d line them up in a row and pretend they were trains; they’d build castles, and, well, it was hours of entertainment.

On another occasion, Oliver was rolling dice (he apparently has a thing for the magic that are dotted counters) with his Grandma Joanne, comparing who rolled what number and then rolling them again and again, compare, roll, repeat. So much fun can be had in such a big world of imagination.

I am no toy or gift Grinch, nor am I a Christmas Grinch. Santa will most certainly be making a stop in at our place as Oliver and Hazel have been on their very best behaviour, but there just might be some stuff management that takes place prior to the holidays… and post holidays... and everywhere in between. We are a society that is blessed to have so much that is so easily accessible. I think if we can remind ourselves of this once in a while, that’d be a good thing.

As a precursor, do know that if you enter our home, expect to see stuff laying around because this “Ms. Minimalism” is a goal that has not totally been reached yet. An ongoing project, you might say!

The team is currently undertaking a fundraising campaign to support their trip to Parksville. They’ve been in contact with the local service clubs and the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce, as they’re hoping to raise $4,000 to help with costs. Expenses include uniforms, travel, and hospitality.

“These guys have paid for some of it themselves, but it’s important that they do get a bit of help if they can,” Mr. Gaspar said.

The team has a bank account active at Kootenay Savings called Invermere Juvenile Curling.

“Deposits can be made on their behalf there, anything as small as five or ten dollars really helps out,” he said.

The amount of censorship in this valley and this country is beginning to get appalling and frightening and very very disturbing.

The concept of free speech is being eroded by our governments at many levels as has been apparent to those that choose to see. And now, and for the last 10 or 12 years, it is also happening in our newspapers both locally, provincially and nationally. I, too, find this very disturbing and in the longer run, like more than two days, frightening in our need to make things politically correct or however correct is the menu of the time or the cause of the time.

We have seen it happen with some of our local “good cause” groups, our Nimby groups, and our local governments. It has become der rigeur, the means of stifling dissent and complaint. And yet, the person

It is not confined to a political party or a group of supporters, but the acceptance of withholding opinions is almost mandatory so that people will not say something someone else might find disturbing.

But how to combat this invasive attitude? Maybe write letters to the editor, to the MPs of Ottawa, the MLAs of Victoria, or the local councillor members. Letter writing does make a difference. Also, talking directly to the MLA/MP/councillor/mayor. Talk to them directly, and better yet, express the concern or worry, but at the same time, offer a workable solution. Talk directly and write and publish your views for the local papers to publish without censorship on whatever cause. And newspapers, publish those views as your papers have become the voice framework for we, the public.

Joan Carolyn Marguerite Manz 1937 – 2014 Joan Carolyn Marguerite Manz (nee Broster), 77, of Invermere passed away peacefully after a graceful battle with cancer on December 1st, 2014 at Columbia House in Invermere, B.C. Joan was born in Flin Flon, Manitoba to Doris and Alf Broster in 1937. She grew up in Island Falls, SK on the Churchill River, moving to Flin Flon in her youth, and having her first daughter Cari. Joan and Cari moved to Calgary in 1964 where Joan was employed at Texaco. She married and had another daughter, Jade.

Joan moved to the family cabin in Invermere in 1998 where she made many wonderful friends. She was a great bridge player and was deeply involved in CV Arts where she shared her love of painting. Joan was a self-taught pianist and vocalist who was never shy of entertaining a crowd. Joan was well loved in her community and welcomed everyone into her life with open arms.

Joan is survived by her daughters, Cari and Jade; her granddaughter, McKenzie; her sister, Jill Rowe; and many nephews and nieces. Joan was predeceased by her husband, Ron. The family would like to extend their deep gratitude to all of the caregivers at Columbia House for making her journey comfortable. Special mention to all of her friends who made every moment they spent with her so meaningful.

A Celebration of Life was held on Saturday, December 6th at Pynelogs in Invermere at 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that a donation be made to the BC Cancer Society.

1 tsp Margarine/Butter 1 tsp Vanilla extract 1 tsp Baking Soda

Combine Sugar and Corn Syrup in a microwave safe Pyrex bowl and microwave on high for 4 minutes.

Add Peanuts, stir quickly and microwave for 4 minutes.

Add Margarine/Butter and Vanilla, stir quickly and microwave for 2 minutes.

Mentors don’t necessarily have to have owned their own business. Anyone age 55 or older who has headed up a department, such as human resources, or has expertise in a particular area, can put their name forward.

“In this community, we have many retirees, young retirees, people who have been so successful in their careers,” Mrs. Clovechok said. “What’s great about this program for mentors is they get to volunteer but the time is on their terms.”

There are no age limits for individuals wanting to be mentored. The only requirement is they own a business, or are thinking of starting up or buying one.

The program is intended to create a safety net for the local business community, one that could potentially prevent businesses from closing down and instead direct owners toward succession planning, as well as foster innovative ideas that will help businesses grow.

“If business owners have an idea or are concerned about a particular area of their business, they have no safe place to go to say, ‘I’m worried about this’ or bounce ideas around to get feedback on what they need to do to move their business forward,” said Mrs. Clovechok, who is hoping word of the program will spread through the valley.

Sponsoring the program are the College of the Rockies, the District of Invermere and the Union of British Columbia Municipalities. COTR is a partner in kind, helping develop the program and offering discounts on select business courses participants may decide they need. The District of Invermere, through a UBCM grant, has provided the Chamber with funding to create the program that has so far been spent on advertising.

Hot turkey lunches were the treat of the week at Windermere Elementary, J.A. Laird and Eileen Madson. On December 9th, From Scratch catered to over 200 students, teachers, staff and parents with food donated by Bigway and Sobeys with the help of moms and dads. Three days of prep lasted 45 minutes when the lunch was served. Parents helped From Scratch’s Lara McCormack peel 100 pounds of potatoes and decorate 250 gingerbread men the night before. “There were lots of helping hands,” said Lara.

For the Invermere schools, Valley Foods generously donated the food for the J.A. Laird turkey lunch on December 8th, while Sobeys took care of Eileen Madson on December 10th. Anna and Randy MacStevens’ Fresh Foods, who cater the schools’ lunch programs, delivered an incredible feast for no charge.

Sobeys owner Eighteen turkeys plus all the trimBrad Bromley mings were gobbled up by almost 500 people at both schools combined. J.A. Laird PAC chair Rhiannon Oliver who co-ordinates healthy lunches for both schools, said the generosity of both grocery stores and the MacStevens was incredible.

(Traditional Swiss Gingerbread) Submitted by Heidi Pronk Ingredients

1 cup cream 1 cup sugar 3 tbsp honey 1 tsp allspice 1 tsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp baking powder

2 cup flour 100 g marzipan

(for glaze) 1/2 cup icing sugar 1 tbsp water 1/2 tbsp lemon juice

• Add flour and baking powder • Mix together, it will be sticky • Pour or scoop half of the mixture into a greased round baking dish • Roll marzipan out flat and place over the top of the mix, then spoon the rest of the cake batter on top of the marzipan • Bake in oven at 350 F for about 30 to 40 minutes or until a tooth pick comes out clean • Mix the glaze ingredients together in a small bowl and brush over biberfladen while cake is still hot, so cake can be seen through glaze • Let it cool on wire rack and enjoy!

2 cups day old french bread cut into cubes 1 medium red, yellow and green bell pepper cut into 1/4 inch strips 1 package (250 mg) cream cheese, crumbled 2 cups grated Swiss cheese

Make every day the Advent

By Rev. David Morton, Associate Pastor, East Kootenay Lutheran Parish Today is December the 12th — just another day, some might say. But some might be celebrating their birthday, like actress Jennifer Connelly, or actor Bill Nighy. Others might look to events which happened on this day. Just to name a few events on this day in history… in 1858 on this date, the first Canadian coins — one cent, five cent, 10 cent and 20 cent pieces — were minted and circulated; in 1899, George F. Bryant patented the wooden golf tee; in 1901, the first transatlantic radio signal was received; in 1946, the laundry detergent Tide was introduced; and in 1961, Martin Luther King Junior, along with 700 other protesters, were arrested in Georgia. But there were many other December 12ths not significant enough to make the history books.

This time of the Christian church year is Advent, a period of time in which the “advent” or “coming” of the incarnation of our Lord is anticipated — the birth of Jesus,

also named “Emmanuel”, which means “God with us”. December the 12th in 2014 is not just another day; it is part of a bigger whole, for Advent is also a season where we are also anticipating His second coming, His “second” Advent, if you will. Any day in this season is not just another day, but one of eager anticipation, a time to get ready!

So how does one get ready for the “coming” of Jesus when it seems He already came 2014 years ago or has yet to come again in 2014 years? It has to do with making each day count. Waiting does not have to mean idle marking of time. It is a time to prepare for that time, which we do not yet know, when Jesus will come again. It is this which makes each day of Advent especially important.

We can prepare our hearts through prayer, the singing of carols, sharing with others the fruit of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. But also know that since Jesus already came many millennia ago, He died on the cross, making it possible for us to do these things and His death is also the reason why we can do no less.

By His death on the cross, His resurrection and His ascension (Easter), we are motivated by His love for us to love one another. Each day gives opportunity for us to take advantage of what is going on around us and who within our sphere of influence could benefit from such love and compassion. Let us then prepare for Advent and make each day the Advent of our Lord!
