Shuswap spending to be tested at the polls

By Dan Walton Pioneer Staff As the Shuswap Band office and Kinbasket Development Corporation (KDC) reaffirm the justification of their top earners’ salaries, other band members are doubling down on claims of corruption and incompetence.

In a Tuesday, November 4th press release, the band reiterated the substantial economic growth that’s been overseen by the incumbent government.

“The development of lands from zero property tax base in 1998, to a development tax base in excess of $70 million in 2014.”

However, claims are being made that there is no fair distribution of that money.

According to a press release by Shuswap Band councillor Barb Cote citing internal

documents as its source, the salaries of Chief Paul Sam and councillor Alice Sam — in excess of $200,000 each over the 2013-2014 fiscal year — are only a fraction of the money they’ve collected through the band office in recent years.

Through honorariums, Chief Paul has claimed $1,055,798 since 2011, and Alice Sam has received $895,961 over that same time frame. It also states that KDC chief executive officer Dean Martin was paid $1,607,930 between 2011 and 2013 (data for 2014 was not available). None of that money was subject to income tax, according to the release. And, as of last March, the band was operating with a deficit of $758,092, it states. For the 2014 fiscal year, the band was allocated $668,282 from the Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada for community economic development (down from $985,810 in 2013).

Canal Flats forum highlights need for growth

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff Canal Flats residents consistently heard about the need for economic growth in the village during the village’s all-candidates forum earlier this week.

Every candidate, at one point or another during the Monday, November 3rd session, said that although many Canal Flats residents may not want to see change in the small village, new residents and new businesses are needed if the village wants to be able to maintain and upgrade its services and infrastructure.

“We have to realize tourism is not a bad word. We need to continually try to make our community better — not necessarily bigger, but better,” said councillor

candidate Karl Sterzer, adding that building a tourism industry has helped prevent a number of former logging and forestry towns from dying out.

Other councillor candidates and both mayoral candidates agreed with these sentiments, with mayoral candidate Dean Midyette actually making the village’s new economic development plan (which he drafted) the centrepiece of his campaign platform.

Mr. Midyette said his background in sales and marketing made him the ideal candidate for mayor in light of the village’s re-branding efforts, and he criticized several of incumbent mayor Ute Juras’ decisions in the past term, accusing her of waffling on the re-branding plan.

Scam alerts • The detachment has received a report that people who are posting a car for sale on social media are receiving calls where people are offering more money than the asking price. The caller would like your banking information so he can deposit the money and someone will come and pick up the car.

• As a result of personal information that can be gained on social media, we have received a report of an attempt to scam grandparents where they are asked to send money to the caller claiming to be a grandson or granddaughter in financial trouble. The callers are able to throw out personal information to convince you they are indeed family members.

Much of the personal information can be gained via the social media.

• On Thursday, October 30th at 6:05 a.m., detachment officers responded to an intoxicated male at the Eagle Ranch Clubhouse. A 49-year-old male from Kelowna was dropped off at the location by friends. The male was able to direct the officers to his parents’ residence and was driven home.

• On Friday, October 31st at 10:57 p.m., the detachment received a complaint from the Windermere Fire Department of a large bonfire in the 1600 block of Sinclair Avenue in Windermere. Police later attended and found the fire unattended. Whitehouse Pub staff were alerted and they extinguished the fire.

• On Saturday, November 1st at 1:15 a.m., detachment officers responded to a complaint of an intoxicated female banging on a door in the 4800 block of Sable Road in Fairmont. A 20-year-old female was located and unable to advise the police where she was staying. The female was provided lodging until she was sober. No charge.

• On Saturday, November 1st at 8 a.m., the detachment received complaints of eggs being thrown at a residence in the 4000 block of Spruce Avenue in Canal Flats.

• On Saturday, November 1st at 10:17 p.m., the detachment received a complaint of a disturbance on Wallis Avenue in Wilmer. The complaint was about a group of people yelling and screaming. Police attended and were not able to observe any disturbance. The group of people were spoken to. They shortly left the area.

• On Saturday, November 1st at 11:16 p.m., officers responded to a complaint of an intoxicated male banging on a door causing a disturbance. It was determined that the 26-year-old male was at a party and became violent and started fighting with people. Police located the male well-known to police on the street.

The male attempted to flee but was arrested. Officers, being familiar with the male, were aware the male was on probation and part of his conditions was to keep the peace and not consume alcohol. The male was charged with breach of probation and lodged in cells for drunk in public.

• On Sunday, November 2nd at 1:27 p.m., the detachment received a complaint of shots fired in the area of the Old Coach Trail. It was determined that a trap shooting event was in progress and there were no safety concerns.

Remembering With the recent murders of two Armed Forces personnel, Patrice Vincent and Nathan Cirillo, many Canadians have found numerous ways to pay their respect to both men as well as show support for their families. I observed the public line up along the highway. I observed numerous sport events pay tribute, as well as a 14-yearold cadet in Coquitlam stand guard at a local cenotaph.

How can we in the valley pay tribute to these two men?

Legions across Canada work hard to raise funds. These funds are put to good use in assisting our veterans. As a community this year, let’s ensure that no poppies are returned. Dig deeper into your pocket and let this be a record year for our local Legions. Throughout Canada our Legions, I believe, raise over two million dollars.

Freedom of choice

It’s fitting that this special Remembrance Day issue also happens to contain stories on local government elections — both municipal and First Nations — as well as some irate letters to the editor complaining about Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s style of running the country. It all relates to the same concept of freedom of choice, which Remembrance Day reminds us to honour every year.

Roughly one hundred years ago, countries across the globe were pulled into four terrible years of trench warfare among other horrors. Twenty-one years later, another World War erupted with more untold trauma and human cruelty. Today, war is still ravaging certain parts of the world. Luckily, Canadians are protected from this type of upheaval and daily violence. Thanks to men and women who have given their lives protecting our country, we live in what many consider to be a utopic democracy; albeit not perfect, but a democracy nonetheless.

There are those, like Bryan Stanchyny in his letter on page 8, who assert this is not the case. Yet our federal government was elected through a fair process. Those unhappy with Canada’s changing face under the Conservative leadership forget it’s what many Canadians voted for when they went to the polls in the last federal election. If anything, they’re unhappy with other Canadians. Whether enough Canadians like Harper’s direction — or not — will be revealed in next year’s federal election. Canadians have the power to enact change if organized, passionate and practical enough. That’s the beauty of democracy. It may not be perfect, but it always offers the freedom of choice at the fundamental level. Your chance to exercise this freedom is coming up today (for Shuswap) and November 15th (for municipal). Poppies help, but the real power is at the polls.

‘Ridiculous’ reasoning for salaries Dear Editor: I am writing to you regarding Dan Walton’s October 31st article and your corresponding editorial about the very disturbing situation that exists within the Shuswap Band’s financial affairs.

What you have reported may come as no surprise to people who have lived in this area for many years.

It should be disturbing not only to Shuswap band members but also to non-Shuswap people because the band, according to your editorial, regularly receives federal funding.

Most recently (2013 and 2014), the Band received a total of $1,654,192.

If what you have published is accurate then the explanation for the huge salaries paid to some of the band council members as put forth by certain band members is ridiculous.

The audits that are now demanded by our federal government should have been inaugurated decades ago.

The time has come for the rank and file band members to clean house and stop allowing the band government to be a family affair.

Reckless financial behaviour will only result in unpleasant consequences both on and off the reserve.

Give a local musician a hug!

Dear Editor: We had a great event at P’logs on Saturday night. I don’t know why it is this way, but our valley breeds and attracts creative people. We have such an array of musicians, painters, writers, builders… and more. And they are all so darn talented and happy to share their creative gifts.

I am sure you would agree that we have an amazing bunch of musicians here, and now we have a fantastic recording studio.

Recently, a group of musicians formed an organization called the Windermere Valley Musicians Who Care.

They raise funds for so many wonderful projects that support music in our valley. This group decided to invite musicians from the valley, of every age, to write and record a Christmas CD last year. The outcome was amazing and the CD release party (at P’logs, of course) was so fun.

So they took on another project this past spring, to create a Songwriters In the

Valley CD collection. Twenty-two musicians of all ages participated, creating original music — all recorded here in the valley. The CD release party was at P’Logs last Saturday night… it was a sold-out event, with every nook and cranny filled with music lovers!

Ahhh, it was so much fun, and what a tribute to our local musicians. It’s at times like this that I love living here. Such a tight-knit community that just cares about each other. I even had a few tears (happy ones!) just feeling the pride and connection to the musicians who have made their meagre careers in this valley just because they believe in our community and in the power of music. We are truly blessed to have this quirky, creative, idiosyncratic artist community around us. Next time you see a Columbia Valley musician… give them a hug!

RCMP resources stretched thin Dear Editor: I’d like to thank Steve Hubrecht for a well-researched article last week regarding the issue of policing in the Jumbo Valley.

The District of Invermere has long been concerned that development in Jumbo would tax our already

November 7, 2014 . . . ‘Police’ from page 7 is evident that the Province must come up with a plan to share the increased costs if development in that area is to continue. I believe it is completely unacceptable for taxpayers in Invermere and the rest of the valley to be footing the bill for policing and other services in the provincially-funded Jumbo Resort Municipality. I understand that, in order to conserve limited resources, the RCMP do not respond to vehicle collisions where there are no injuries, nor do they take action on most thefts (like bicycles). We are also aware that organized crime and drug trade are active in the valley. Given these circumstances, I call upon the provincial government to immediately negotiate a reasonable funding agreement with Jumbo Glacier Resort so that any future police, security or emergency costs do not negatively impact existing, populated, taxpaying communities in the Columbia Valley.

Democracy denied in Canada Dear Editor: After branding a respected local as a liar, in his October 24th Pioneer RCMP Report, Sgt. Shehovac tells us this whopper: “…all decisions over the last two summers as to when local police attend to Jumbo and in what numbers have been my decision.” The June 4th Ottawa Citizen says this: “The federal government is expanding its surveillance of public activities to include all known demonstrations across the country, a move that collects information even on the most mundane of protests by Canadians.”

Harper’s “Government Operations Centre” is the intelligence clearinghouse where information, not only on Aboriginal protesters, but the surveillance of all demonstrations on any person or group, is collected. Yes, blanket surveillance may be a breach of our Charter rights. But Harper is tabling new laws to bypass that,

giving police even more sweeping powers. Information gathered by CSIS (Canada’s CIA) and the RCMP is freely shared with the oil-and-gas cartel — they all sit in meetings together. These meetings are more like strategy sessions that seek ways to sidestep our democracy. Much like democracy sidestepped in the Jumbo caper.

If Jumbo had been a genuine democratic process with RDEK directors honestly representing their constituents, there would be no protests. It would have been voted down.

Gary Clement, former RCMP superintendent and 30-year veteran, said he’s never seen the degree of political control over the Mounties that exists today. As for his view on the chances of an objective police investigation into the Senate expense scandal, he states, it “does not bode well.”

It doesn’t bode well for an honest federal election next year either. Honourable Canadians fought and died for democracy.

They may have died in vain.

“We were pleasantly surprised to discover images of a black bear using one of the new underpasses,” said Tania Peters in a Parks Canada press release. Video of the black bear was captured by the cameras placed on either side of the underpass.

Despite the success, drivers are reminded that animal collision season is upon us.

Barb Waters, Regional Manager of the BC Conservation Foundation, said in a recent news release that “although a collision with wildlife can happen at any place and at any time, in the East Kootenays the highest risk months for wildlife vehicle collisions are October through December.”

Drivers have been advised to be on the lookout for wildlife on the local roads and highways, including Highway 95, as “there can be two or three collisions each day during these months,” said Ms. Waters.

ences around two deaths and 180 injuries annually in collisions involving animals, many of which can be prevented with proper knowledge of highway hints and awareness of wildlife. Drivers and passengers are advised to be watchful of both the road and roadside area, and to be on the alert for deer as these animals travel in groups. Be aware that animals have unpredictable behaviour, especially during rutting season when they are frequently on the move. Drivers are also warned to practise careful driving when on the road from 5 to 8 a.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. as these are critical times to watch for wildlife. The reason for this is the changing light levels, traffic volumes from people commuting to and from work, and increased animal activity during these times.

Jumbo policing clarified New age for Canadian Tire money

The provincial Environmental Assessment Office has clarified that it considers a Glacier Resorts Ltd. commitment in its environmental assessment certificate to do with police services to be applicable when people are actually living and working at the planned Jumbo Glacier Resort, not during construction phases of the project.

“This condition is an operational requirement and will be implemented when there are staff, residents and visitors at the resort,” said Ministry of Environment spokesperson David Karn.

Invermere councillor Paul Denchuk, in a story in last week’s October 31st edition of The Pioneer, had suggested that Glacier Resorts Ltd. should contribute to the cost of policing in Jumbo, citing the four local RCMP officers present at the October 4th rally held in the Jumbo Valley by resort opponents, and pointing to commitment 178 in Glacier Resorts Ltd’s assessment certificate.

The commitment, under the heading “police services” reads that resort proponents commit “to develop a plan with the assistance of police and provincial authorities and to be responsible for arrangements with the province regarding police service and adequate staffing.”

The Pioneer had asked the Environmental Assessment Office if the commitment was meant to be applied once the Jumbo municipality actually has permanent residents (as the office has now clarified it does), or if it was also meant to apply during other phases of the project, such as during construction. But the office’s response was received after press time and consequently could not be included in last week’s story.

Canadian Tire has introduced an exciting new way to collect its famous money. The dollar program has been around since its inception in 1954, and is steadfastly moving on up into the digital era.

“We were really the first ones with a loyalty program — we are one of the most favoured loyalty programs in the grand scheme of things,” said associate dealer Craig Knapp of the Canadian Tire Store in Invermere.

Catapulting into the new age, the progressive Canadian corporation has created three new ways to collect and redeem awards electronically. Setting up an e-system will allow the channelling of Canadian Tire money into electronic accounts, basically providing a unique online banking system.

“The first is the Canadian Tire card, or key fob, which the consumer can put on their key chain. The second is a mobile app, and we also have an options MasterCard, offering an introduction into multipliers,” said Mr. Knapp.

Canadian Tire operates as a bank, essen-

tially on the same level as the RBC, or TD and has a number of two and half millioncard holders.

“The unique thing about our money is that it has no expiry date,” he said. The money is essentially a coupon that goes on forever, a unique feature that sets the company apart, along with their progressive stance about staying up on the latest digital consumer trends.

Its latest invention, the mobile app, promises to fulfill the company’s mandate for speed and accessibility.

“Our comprehensive electronic format is really bringing us into the modern age of mobile devices,” said Mr. Knapp.

Being able to use your mobile device with the new mobile app to redeem points and make transactions feeds into the ideology that the mobile phone will become like a wallet, he added. Along with this progressive attitude, Canadian Tire offers an e-flier and is currently working on a mini Wi-Fi transmission to send product related messages to consumers when they walk in the door.

“Our consumers want the same as those in urban areas and we are definitely cutting edge.”

Movie Review: A Most Wanted Man Reviewed by Lizzie Midyette Fans of John Le Carré novels, or those who enjoy movie adaptations of previous works, will enjoy this adaptation of A Most Wanted Man, which was based upon the real-life experiences of Murat Kurnaz.

A man of Turkish descent, Kurnaz ended up being detained in Guantanamo Bay via Kandahar, Afghanistan, after his arrest in Pakistan even though he was a legal German resident. However, as A Most Wanted Man is an adaptation of an adaptation, it can be seen entirely as a work of fiction, made stranger by its realism to counterterrorism and intelligence work as we understand it.

Exploring counter-intelligence in the post-911 world we live in, A Most Wanted Man explores racially-charged presumption of guilt, potential government fraud and deception, and how there are no easy solutions to the complex issues facing each and every one of us as increasingly global citizens.

The late Phillip Seymour Hoffman plays Günther Bachmann, a counter-intelligence agent caught up in the torture of a Chechen immigrant and suspected tourist. Fans of his work will be saddened as this is the last performances he gave to film — it’s the elephant in the room that cannot be ignored. Of note is Rachel McAdams’ performance. Cue secrets being revealed, misdirection, and never quite knowing what’s going to happen next! As the world becomes smaller, connections to countries increase and become potentially complicated over time. The movie seems framed in blue, giving it a timeless quality that allows necessary details to shine through. The cinematography is beautiful.

A group of senior students from David Thompson Secondary School, along with EF Tours and Me to We, has taken the initiative and planned a trip to Ecuador to aid an indigenous community in the Amazon. The students are looking for the valley’s support of their fundraising that will go towards the cost of their trip as Me to We volunteers.

Me to We is an organization started by the found-

ers of Free the Children, Craig and Marc Kielburger, and was actually started in Ecuador more than a decade ago. Craig and Marc had experienced a “minga”, which roughly translates to “a community coming together to work for the benefit of all”, while they were building a school in the area.

The communities knew that one village’s success actually helps their collective future, and that one day this village would return the favour.

Come March, the group of local students will get the opportunity to engage with locals and learn hands on about the unique lifestyle of South America. With hefty trip costs of over $4,000 per student, not to mention the cost of the required immunizations, the group has started its fundraising process in the valley.

The fees also include support for the community they will go to, and cover the cost of tools and other necessities during the volunteer process.

The group is currently selling poinsettias, although if you want to get your orders in, you’ll have to do it fast as orders will only be accepted until November 10th.

The students are preparing to take on more fundraising projects as time progresses and would love to involve the community. Keep an eye out for future articles with information on the group’s fundraisers, and the Me to We organization itself.

Rock-based musical will appeal to Broadway fans Submitted by Elephant Mountain Music Theatre A Nelson troupe is hitting the road with a production of the musical Rent, bringing it to four East Kootenay communities, including Invermere on Saturday, November 15th. The Tony Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical is the second show by Nelson-based Elephant Mountain Music Theatre (EMMT), following an acclaimed production of Jesus Christ Superstar in 2012.

Based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera, La bohème, Rent follows the lives of group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York City’s Lower East Side, under the shadow of poverty, homophobia, addiction, gentrification and the deadly threat of HIV/AIDS. “They’re people who are trying very hard,” said music director Laura Johnson. “They can’t get off the ground.”

The EMMT team has strong Kootenay roots, with Johnson and her sister Rita Collinson — both born and raised in Creston — and Johnson’s husband, Nelson native Kevin Armstrong, serving, respectively, as music director, production manager and director. Johnson and Collinson have been involved in music all of their lives, and Armstrong has performed opera in Europe and the Kootenays, both in solo shows and in the opera Khaos, created in Nelson in 2012.

Rent, perhaps best known for the song Seasons of Love, has a rock-based score composed by Jonathan Larson, who died unexpectedly at 35 the night before its Off-Broadway premiere in January 1996. A few months later, it opened on Broadway, where it ran for over 5,000 performances through 2008.

It was nominated for 10 Tony Awards and won four (including best musical, best book of a musical and best score), and is one of only eight musicals (including South Pacific, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and A Chorus Line) to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The show is one that Armstrong has wanted to do for years after seeing it on Broadway in the 1990s and being impressed by the score.

“I was just blown away from the first song,” he said. “I’d never seen another show like it. Broadway is usually selling glitz and glamour, not dust and dirt.”

Although he’s starred in many musicals and operas, he’s never had the chance to perform in Rent, so he’s pulling double duty in this one, also playing the role of Tom Collins, a philosophy professor with AIDS. “I don’t make my job easy for myself doing that,” he said. “On the other hand, it’s artistically satisfying because I’m involved in the production on two totally different levels.”

While the show deals with serious social issues without romanticizing them, it isn’t all doom and gloom, with lighthearted moments interspersed. One of those, John-

“It’s a kind of ridiculous, kind of a fantasy moment,” Johnson said. “They hope for things you never hope for.”

And with a wide range of musical styles, including rock ’n’ roll, tango, R&B and pop, the story is told in a way that will appeal to fans of both rock and musicals.

“The music, if not actually familiar, has a kind of familiar sound,” said Johnson. “You can relate to that musical style.”

“They’re not going to expect what we’re going to offer them, which is a show with a lot of energy, exuberance, youth and volume,” said Armstrong.

YOUR MONEY New tax cuts for families

On Thursday, October 30th, the federal government unveiled a package of tax breaks aimed at families with children. These benefits are estimated to be worth almost $27 billion over six years, or $4.6 billion per year. Here is a summary of the changes and how they could affect B.C. families.

Income-splitting Families with children under 18 will enjoy special income-splitting allowances. Under the government’s new plan, these couples may transfer up to $50,000 of income from the higher-earning spouse to the lower earning spouse, to be taxed at his or her marginal rate.

This non-refundable benefit will be available in the 2014 tax year, and is capped at $2,000 per family. Capping helps ensure that the benefit does not become too generous for some higher-earning families.

For example, consider a family where one spouse transfers $50,000 income that would be taxed at the highest marginal bracket of 45.8 per cent to their spouse who, on average, would only be taxed at about 25 per cent. Without capping, this would have produced about a $10,000 tax break.

While good for that particular family, it’s clear to see why the benefit amount was limited. In their case, they would likely only have to split about $10,000 income to generate the $2,000 allowable. Families with less disparity between their individual incomes would have to split

more income to garner the maximum benefit.

Experts estimate that this provision will benefit 1.7 million families and will cost about $2 billion annually.

Changes to monthly benefits Along with income splitting, an enhanced Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB) was revealed. The UCCB currently pays families $100 per month per child under six years of age. Under the new plan, that amount would be raised to $160 per month.

Additionally, parents with children aged six to 17 would begin receiving $60 per month per child to help with their costs. Both of these changes are scheduled to go into effect on January 1st, 2015 and will replace the existing Child Tax Credit. With the new program, families would receive up to $1,920 for each child under six and up to $720 for each child aged up to 17.

These changes will benefit about four million families and cost about $4.4 billion annually. However, factoring in the estimated $1.8 billion saved from the Child Tax Credit would actually realize a cost of about $2.6 billion more than now.

Child care expenses The Child Care Expense deduction allows taxpayers to claim child care expenses incurred while they attend work or school.

deduction across the board, allowing for $8,000 per child under age seven and $5,000 for each child aged seven through 16. Parents of children who are eligible for the Disability Tax Credit will now have a maximum of $11,000 to spend on child care expenses.

Presently, the average cost of child care in B.C. for an infant to preschool-aged child is $826.20 per month.

Children’s Fitness Tax Credit Earlier in the month, the federal government announced that they would double the size of the Children’s Fitness Tax Credit.

This will increase the current maximum amount of expenses from $500 to $1,000 annually.

The change will be enacted for the 2014 tax year, and become a refundable credit starting in 2015. That means Canadians who pay little to no income tax can still receive the credit.

Final thoughts On average, it is estimated that the above tax breaks will give families with children about $1,140 annually in tax relief and benefits. This is significant, and will certainly help families with the rising costs of caring for children, or saving for their post-secondary education.

By Arnold Malone Pioneer Columnist A nation’s history, like our daily lives, has many unintended consequences.

We take an action expecting an outcome and, beyond our imagination, a surprising result occurs. So it was with Canada’s role in the Great War: World War I. From the ashes of that war, Canada established her nationhood.

By so many measures, the Great War was a sad event. The fighting conditions were utterly awful. The rain-soaked trenches were frequently rampant with rats, and living quarters were cold and damp. Worse, the daily exposure to death after death after death is beyond what most civilians can comprehend.

When the four years of war were over, Canada had sacrificed nearly 65,000 men and women and more than 150,000 were wounded. At the time, Canada’s population was a mere seven million. As a percentage of population, Canada and New Zealand paid the highest price.

Our Canadian soldiers distinguished themselves with their fighting ability at the Somme, Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele, Arras, and Amiens but it was the Battle of Ypres that placed Canada in international focus. This was a location where allied forces had previously failed. Then, in a final attempt, all except Canada turned back when chlorine gas was released. The Canadians however, with urine- or mudsoaked handkerchiefs, covered their noses and pressed on.

Thereafter, they victoriously fought a bayonets battle and secured a major victory. In a two-day battle, we lost 6,000 troops. The following day, military surgeon John McCrae penned the words to the poem, In Flanders Fields.

In August of this year, papers were released in England relating to the aftermath of WWI. Included was a transcript describing Canada’s Prime Minister, Sir Robert Borden, grabbing a British official by his lapel and declaring, “We lost 60,000 persons in war and we have earned the right to make our own decisions.”

Afterwards, for the first time Canada — separate from England — earned a seat at the Paris Peace Conference.

Britain then applied to have Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa sit at international tables as separate countries. This was strongly opposed by the United States. The USA saw this as a trick to give Britain five votes in international decisions.

For a while, the USA was somewhat correct as the colonies tended to take Britain’s lead on world matters.

In time however, Canada and other Commonwealth countries grew into the fullness of self-directed nations.

We have trusted allies, but we advocate Canadian values. Prime Minister Brian Mulroney stood steadfast in opposition to his respected friends, Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan, by opposing apartheid in South Africa. It was Prime Minister Lester Pearson who so notably placed Canada as a nation of principle with his Nobel Peace Prize, a distinct Canadian flag, universal health care and the introduction of the Order Of Canada. From World War I onward, Canada has provided extraordinary influence.

Canada is a respected member of NATO, a member of the G7, a persuasive force at the World Bank, and is seen as a commanding middle power throughout the world. What other country with a population between thirty and forty million holds such international respect as Canada? Is it Kenya, Algeria, Poland, Sudan, Uganda, Iraq, Morocco, Peru, Uzbekistan or Ghana?

Canada has more world influence than any other nation that approximates our population. Moreover, there are many countries with larger populations whose influence is a mere pittance when compared with Canada.

Canada has for many decades, ranked in the top five of “Best Place In Which To Live.” We are the world’s second largest land mass, have the longest coastline, have one-fifth of the world’s fresh water, an abundance of resources, and a well-educated society that enjoys the freedoms of a civilized democracy. We have so much to be proud of. We are true north strong and, as a collective, we shall always stand on guard for thee O Canada. War was a heavy cost so we owe our stewardship for what has been preserved.

Remembrance Day Address 2014 Ken Carlow, President Windermere District Branch #71 At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.

On November 11th, we recognize and honour the men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation.

The year 2014 marks a number of significant milestones in our military history. A century ago, the First World War started and, 75 years ago, World War II began. Some 50 years ago saw the first Canadian peacekeeping efforts in Cyprus, and a new milestone this year is the end of Canada’s military mission in Afghanistan.

Recent events in Ottawa and St-Jeansur-Richelieu, where two military members died, as well as the June tragedy in Moncton, New Brunswick, where three RCMP members were killed, bring this Remembrance Day all too close to home.

Corporal Nathan Cirillo, Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent, Constable Fabrice Gevaudan, Constable Douglas Larche, and Constable Dave Ross are unfortunately now among those who we remember on November 11th for their service to Canada.

When Windermere Valley joined the war Curator’s Corner

By J.D. Jeffery Museum Curator On August 4th, 1914, Great Britain joined the Great War. Our “local boys” were assigned to various battalions in the Canadian Expedition Force but, by May 1915, the 54th Kootenay Battalion was created to represent the district.

Unlike single men, if married men signed up, they were required to bring a certificate of approval from

their wives. By June 1918, 233 men left the valley to go to war leaving around 500 people in the entire Windermere District.

Front line conditions were harsh — mud, enemy fire and amputations were everyday occurrences. Getting wounded meant long periods of rest or “convalescence”, but when the men came home they had to deal with “shell shock”. Opinions on treatment varied, but right after the war, one medical historian recorded that

“shell shock was a manifestation of childishness and femininity, and as such was best cured by offering no pension, no encouragement, and no medical record.”

On the home front, Red Cross Societies were created to raise money, citizens formed the Canadian Patriotic Fund to help soldiers’ families, and people were encouraged to substitute foods: “the foods we ought to use for the foods the soldiers need”.

War memorabilia solves veteran’s initial mystery

By David Goldsmith Contributed “Grampa” Ernest Cooper was the father of Adella Alberta Cooper, who married Samuel Sidney “Sid” Goldsmith. Adella and Samuel were the parents of Columbia Valley resident David Goldsmith — the grandson of Ernest and the writer of this little story about a family mystery that was cleared up via the internet, ninety years after the mystery originated.

Grampa Cooper was discharged from the army after World War I. Later in life when he died, he was buried in the cemetery near Kelso, Saskatchewan, near the old family homestead. A mystery developed around the lettering on his headstone supplied by Veteran’s Affairs Canada.

He was named simply Ernest Cooper by his family.

He had no middle name. Early in his life, he adopted the letter “V” as a middle initial, although it stood for no particular name. He was known all of his adult life as Ernest V. Cooper. Strangely, when Veteran’s Affairs supplied his headstone, they had “Ernest N. Cooper” inscribed upon it. The family never knew where the initial “N” came from, but not much was done about it. When I was about 17 years old, I remember taking my Mom to the gravesite, and filling in part of the letter “N” on the headstone to make it look as much like a lopsided “V” as possible.

This mystery of the wrong middle initial stood until the fall of 2006. I mentioned my grandfather’s WWI medal to a friend. He, being an army veteran, wished to see it and learn something about its background. I decided to look on the internet to see if I could find something about it. Sure enough.

The medal was presented as a British War Medal to all members of the “Canadian Expeditionary Forces Overseas” as they were known, fighting on behalf of Britain. The first issue of the medal, authorized on July 26th, 1919, had the recipient’s name engraved on the exterior rim of the medal. The family had never noticed such an engraving on Grampa’s medal. There it was! The medal had upon it the incorrect initial “N” on the rim, rather than the correct initial “V”! With the original medal was the original short paper note, presented by King George V, showing to whom the medal was awarded. The letter “N” appears again. The medal was presented to “A. SJT. E. N. Cooper”. Three times the military had wrongly printed Grampa’s middle initial as “N”. Why? With further search on the internet, I found a website developed by Canadian Veterans who had undertaken to make photographic reproductions of the original “Attestation Papers” for every person who had signed up for the Canadian military during the time of the First World War. These are actual true copies of the forms filled out by individuals, complete with signatures, etc. I found the actual Attestation Paper as filled out and signed by Grampa Ernest Cooper. Upon seeing these papers, the mystery of the “V” turned into an “N” by the military became very obvious.

Back in those days, young people were taught in school that all letters, when cursive writing, should start

When Grampa Cooper signed his papers, the capital “E” for Ernest starts out low on the line and flows up to the top of the letter before, making a flowing letter “E”. The “C” on Cooper does the same thing. His middle initial “V”, written in this same manner (starting on the lower line) would almost certainly look like a capital letter “N” to anyone who did not know him, such as a recruiting officer. Mystery solved.

Grampa Ernest “V” Cooper had signed his Attestation Papers on January 24th, 1916. Why he had been known to the military as Ernest “N” Cooper had remained a mystery

for almost ninety years, and then the marvels of the internet made it possible to unravel this small family mystery.

Post script: On April 5th, 2012, I was trying to find any information about a small bronze spoon that I had in my possession for years, but knew nothing about. This spoon is of the souvenir spoon size, at 4.5 inches long.

It has a maple leaf at the top with a coat of arms, and a beaver, with the words “Expeditionary Battalion” in one banner, and “Canada” in a second banner. The words “Camp Hughes 1916” appear in the bowl of the spoon.

Again, I turned to the internet, and found that Camp Hughes was used from 1910 to 1918, and for brief periods beyond that. In 1916, the camp trained an amazing 27,754 troops, making it the largest community in Manitoba outside of Winnipeg. Grampa Cooper’s papers are stamped “217th Overseas Battalion” meaning this spoon was almost certainly purchased by him while at Camp Hughes. The spoon has therefore joined his WWI medal in my safety deposit box. Camp Hughes was designated

a National Historic Site on March 28th, 2012 by the federal government after much work by local historians.

Post Script 2: Perhaps you will have noticed that Grampa Cooper, born in 1873, would have been 43 years old when he signed up for the army during WWI. His first-born son, my uncle, was Brian Cooper, born in 1898.

In 1916, at the age of 18, Brian Cooper decided that he should join the military and fight on behalf of Canada. His dad, (my grandfather) evidently stated to the family that his son was too young to do this, but if he insisted, then he too would sign up. So Grampa, age 43, and trained as a carpenter as can be seen on his Attestation Papers, signed up and went overseas with the military. Grampa Cooper spent his time during WWI mostly in Britain, working as a carpenter on military installations for the war effort.

Neither my grandfather Ernest, nor my uncle Brian, were wounded or injured during World War I, and both returned home to Canada and took up their lives again. In his early 40s, my uncle Brian signed up in 1940 for the Canadian military for the Second World War, and saw action as a sniper during that war. He was very fortunate to escape without harm. Near the end of the war, he was pinned down by the German army from two different angles. He had run out of ammunition, and felt that his last resort was to throw a hand grenade towards one of the two positions that had him pinned, knowing that this would give away his position and the others would likely get him. As he pulled the pin on that grenade and held it, wondering what to actually do while physically holding the mechanism to keep it from blowing, he heard his own comrades coming from behind, and knew help was on the way. He re-inserted the pin into that grenade, and kept it with him throughout the remainder of the war. After the war, he had that grenade de-commissioned, and I also have that as a family memento. He was never injured during either war. He, too, received decorations, and those are in the possession of other family members today.

Post Script 3: Included with the military items of Grampa Cooper are a couple of things that belonged to my dad, Samual Sydney (Sid) Goldsmith. My dad signed up for the army in 1941 or 42. He went into training, and became a member of the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals. He spent 1942 to 1943 as a signal/semaphore operator for the army stationed in Eastern Canada. In early 1944, as he was being readied to be shipped overseas from Halifax, he broke his leg during training and was hospitalized in Halifax for a couple of months, and returned to the west in March 1944. This was good for two reasons. His son, Elmar (my older brother) had been born in 1942 and had not yet been seen by his father. I was born in January 1945, nine and a half months after my dad’s return home.

My own fate, and that of the family, could have turned out very differently if he had not broken his leg. He never did go overseas with the army as the war soon ended. Dad’s “Dog Tags” and his hat badge from the Signal Corps are now also included with these family mementos. He was Signalman 606354. Dad died in 1992 at the age 81.

Fairmont youth wins Remembrance Day contest

By Dan Walton Pioneer Staff Deanna Stiller — a 13 year old from Fairmont Hot Springs — earned national attention after entering the best Remembrance Day essay for her age group in Canada.

“And she was only 11 when she wrote it,” said her mom Heather.

Through the Royal Canadian Legion, students around the country were invited to enter the Annual Poster and Literary Contest. Students were challenged to submit either a hand-drawn poster, a poem, or an essay. Deanna took a stab at all three of art forms, but submitted just her

essay, which she felt could best deliver her message.

In expressing the importance of Remembrance Day, Deanna’s writing emphasized heavily on her own heritage.

“My parents were both born and raised in Holland during the war, and my in-laws were both born and raised in Germany during the war,” Heather said. “So that has a big impact on our family.”

During a visit with her grandmother last summer, Deanna was shown a new perspective after objecting to the number of chores she was assigned.

“Grandma said, ‘You’ve got it easy; when I was your age I was hiding in a bomb shelter with my two brothers, and I didn’t know when my parents were coming back or if they were coming back, so I wouldn’t be complaining

Proposed golf course purchase controversial

By Erin Knutson Special to The Pioneer Council meetings at Canal Flats have been rife with debate over the past few months on whether or not the purchase of a golf course for the Village is an appropriate, or even possible, course of action.

The notion is being entertained based on requests from citizens about the re-opening the private property; however, council has no official mandate at this time and no public discussion will commence until further strategy for successfully executing the project has come to fruition.

“Ever since the golf course went up for sale, I thought it would be great if the municipality could own it. I have also had comments from residents along that line. Given the fact that the price has been reduced to a number we can work with, I would like to at least explore the possibility,” said Canal Flats mayor Ute Juras.

Council will decide if a study should be undertaken during a planned strategy meeting in the 2015 budget and operating priorities session. “Discussion was brief.

Without a complete study as to the potential risks and rewards, council was not going to pursue the purchase,” said councillor Paul Marcil.

Initiating a plan to purchase the golf course was seen as positive due to perceived benefits from the successful implementation and operation of such a project should the risks be properly negotiated.

“I personally would like to see the course operating.

It’s 39 acres of land in the centre of our village and I don’t know what else could be done with the property in the foreseeable future. It would be an attractive greenspace, which would offer healthy outdoor local activity for our residents and visitors, plus create some local jobs — all good things,” said Mr. Marcil.

Potentially the golf course is a viable asset that could be entertained given the stipulation that a proper business model is in place, effectively outlining a concrete fiscal plan of action.

“That being said, in order for the possibility of it becoming a viable operation, a significant amount of capital is required to rebuild the course and its infrastructure,” said Mr. Marcil.

Difficulty securing or allocating grant monies has threatened the progress of the initiative. A motion to pursue the purchase of the golf couse was tabled during the the Tuesday, October 14th council meeting by Mrs. Juras.

There was no discussion about where the village would get the money to make the initial purchase, but it was suggested that some of the property could be subdivided into lots, which could them be sold to recover the cost afterward.

Concerned council members strongly voiced their opinions over the proposal based on the following: The golf market has seen a decline in turnout over the past five years. Statistics show that a drop of one million golfers a year has occurred during this time period.

Significant investments would have to be allowed for the maintenance (replacement of the irrigation system) of the golf course, including equipment purchases, human resources and building concessions (a pro shop and a clubhouse), among other possible structures needed to properly facilitate a functional golf course.

Other issues with the plan involve holding costs that would fall upon taxpayers’ shoulders until the subdivided properties have been sold. Although the real estate market has seen improvement, concerns over the expediency of sales were expressed.

The 20-year capital plan, due to be accepted at the Monday, November 24th council meeting details millions of dollars in infrastructure spending that needs to be addressed during the coming decade.

The majority of council seemed resolved to hold off on the project until an airtight businesses plan and functional business model are presented.

“Would, or should the taxpayers of Canal Flats take on the burden — that, I surmise is the biggest question and it deserves a study at the very least,” said Mr. Marcil.

Deadly driving case draws to a close

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff A long-standing case in Invermere Provincial Court finally came to a close earlier this week with the sentencing of a Vancouver man convicted of dangerous driving causing death in connection with a fatal accident in Kootenay National Park more than three years ago.

Jaswinder Singh Bagri — who was found guilty this past April on four counts of dangerous driving causing death after a four-day trial in March — was sentenced in Invermere court on Monday, November 3rd to three years in jail and a five-year driving prohibition to begin immediately upon his release from prison.

“It’s within the range of acceptable sentences,” said Crown prosecutor Lynal Doerksen, adding he hopes the conclusion of the legal case brings at least some measure of closure to the family of the victims.

The case stemmed from a July 22nd, 2011 collision involving Mr. Bagri’s semi that took the lives of Robert Howard, his wife AnaMaria Dias, and their two children Veronica, 9, and Samantha, 11, who were vacationing in B.C. from Palo Alto, California.

Mr. Bagri’s semi truck jack-knifed into the path of the family’s northbound Dodge camper van that was towing a Suzuki SUV, pinning them against a guardrail and trapping them inside the vehicle as fire broke out. All four died in the fire, but Mr. Bagri was uninjured.

The collision occurred on a segment of Highway 93 running downhill from the pass near Olive Lake (13 kilometres east from Radium Hot Springs).

NDP launch Jumbo attack

By Nicole Trigg Pioneer Staff The NDP launched an attack against Environment Minister Mary Polak in the legislature on Tuesday, November 4th during question period. The topic was Jumbo Glacier Resort and the onslaught was based on footage and information supplied by RK Heliski suggesting the foundation for the resort’s day lodge, which was poured days before the project’s October 12th Environmental Certificate deadline, was located in the path of a Class 4 avalanche zone.

According to Glacier Resorts Ltd. vice president Grant Costello in an email to The Pioneer the next day, the information is false.

“All the avalanche zones in the Jumbo Valley have been well mapped out by the best avalanche experts in the business and whereas there are “no development zones” in the CRA due to potential avalanche hazard, the daylodge is not in one of these zones,” said Mr. Costello in the email on Wednesday, November 5th.

“The location of the lodge is in a heavily wooded area that was cleared and is surrounded by mature timber. Potential avalanches will be controlled by professionals using the latest tools and techniques available to the industry as in ski resorts around the world.”

At the beginning of the blitz in legislature, NDP leader John Horgan hammered Minister Polak with requests to withdraw Jumbo Glacier Resort’s certificate, claiming the project’s proponent was “consistently unable or unwilling” to meet the necessary conditions.

“The only place Jumbo Glacier Resort has put a foundation in is in a Class 4 avalanche zone; will you withdraw the permit?” asked Mr. Horgan of Minister Polak. “It’s not a good place to put a day

lodge; probably not a good place to put a ski resort,” said Mr. Horgan, saying it potentially was putting people at risk.

Minister Polak said consultation work was being done with the Ktunaxa Nation. “I will render a decision shortly after that; it would be inappropriate for me to comment at this stage in the process,” she said. “It is very important that we allow the process to unfold and allow First Nations to provide information.”

Minister Polak also stated the October 12th deadline had been investigated by compliance officers and a decision wouldn’t be made until following a review of this investigation.

Columbia Lake-Revelstoke MP Norm Macdonald then led the charge, reiterating Mr. Horgan’s claims about the day lodge foundation being in the wrong place and in a dangerous avalanche path.

“What’s going on Minster, what’s going on?” Mr. Macdonald asked, adding that the situation defied common sense. “A slab of concrete in the wrong place — this is the substantial start of a billion dollar resort?”

Nelson-Creston Michelle Mungal also chimed in with the accusation that the proponent of the project had ridiculed Ktunaxa Nation for its Qat’muk claim.

She referenced a website created by the resort team that “makes a mockery” of the First Nation. The website, www.beforeqatmuk.com, states on its homepage that the “Qatmuk declaration not credible”.

Over and over again in response to the three MPs’ calls not to support Jumbo Glacier Resort, Minister Polak dryly responded that, as a statutory decisionmaker, she was not in a position to make any “ad hoc” decisions and was awaiting the Ktunaxa submission.

“It’s a very important role they (Ktunaxa) have leading up to this decision,” Minister Polak said.

For her part, Mrs. Juras took a less confrontational approach, highlighting her achievements during the past term as mayor, her decade of experience on Canal Flats council, and her team-oriented style.

“It’s been exciting to have been here (on council) since day one, when we incorporated,” she said. “The mayor and council work together as a team, and the community is an important part of that team. I intend to continue that and I will continue to be approachable and transparent. If you see me on the street and have any questions, you are always welcome to come up to me and ask.”

Mrs. Juras cited her frequently updated Facebook page and her mayor’s message updates as prime examples of how she openly engages with the community.

Candidates were given an opportunity for opening and closing remarks and asked to respond to six questions by forum moderator Doug Clovechok.

Although answers often circled back to the theme of economic development and growth, the questions touched on a range of topics, including whether or not the village should consider purchasing the old golf course within its municipal boundaries and what can be done in the future to prevent the village from being sued (as it currently is by Painted Ridge subdivision developer Mike Vernon’s company).

Most candidates said that although the golf course could be a great asset for the village, a better business plan is needed.

“That’s the equivalent to an airplane crash each month. And if we had an airplane crash each month, people would certainly be examining what’s going on and trying to fix that issue,” she said.

The family had thought perhaps a stiffer penalty might be appropriate, added Mrs. Howard.

“Since our concern has always been how to make the roads safer, we had been hoping for a longer (driving prohibition), given that Mr. Bagri doesn’t seem to have grasped the consequences of what he did,” she said.

“I’m not ready to risk your (Canal Flats’ residents) tax money without a clear idea how we can staff it and run it. You’ve got to present a really good business plan to get this by me,” said incumbent councillor candidate Marie Delorme.

“It could be attractive and would bring in full-time and part-time jobs.

But how do we afford this? I’m not sure we can,” said incumbent councillor candidate Paul Marcil.

Councillor candidate Roy Webb was more blunt.

“I’m not in favour of this at all. The golf course hasn’t run for three years, there’d be labour costs and we’d have to build a clubhouse,” he said. “I’m against the Village of Canal Flats going in to pick up somebody else’s mistake.”

On the question of Mr. Vernon’s company’s lawsuit, which has to do with the stalled development of Painted Ridge and is due to be heard in the B.C. Supreme Court in 2015, all current council members chose not to respond, pointing out it was inappropriate for them to comment on a lawsuit that was currently ongoing. The non-incumbent councillors, however, openly offered their opinions, with Mr. Webb saying some kind of settlement with Mr. Vernon’s company must be reached, and Mr. Sterzer (who was formerly Mr. Vernon’s project manager for Painted Ridge) saying it reflects badly on the village.

“A bird in hand is better than two in the bush. And those birds in the bush, they talk and tell other birds that Canal Flats is not a place to get business done,” said Mr. Sterzer. “Mr. Vernon has spent 10 years trying to develop 31 fee-simple lots and that is not acceptable.”

The forum drew about 30 attendees to hear the answers of the two mayor candidates and four councillor candidates. A fifth councillor candidate — Erin Gornik — was unable to attend the session.

Mrs. Howard said that for herself, her husband John and the more than 25 other family members related to the victims, the end of the case is another step in the long process of closure.

“Our families will never be the same, but it is a relief to have this part of the process over,” she said.

Mrs. Howard thanked Mr. Doerksen for his dogged persistence in the case, saying that without it the collision and circumstances that led to it could have easily been mistaken for an unavoidable accident.

GALs hosting photo fundraiser Dan Walton dan@invermerevalleyecho.com The Global Animal Lovers (GALs) have teamed up with Ideal Prints to update the decor in the valley.

Ideal Prints was looking for help to unload some inventory so on Saturday, November 8th, the Community Hall in Invermere will be loaded with their photos. The market will be organized by the team from GALs, and it runs from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

“Always be there at 9 to get the best stuff,” said GAL Jess De Groot. “They basically have all this artwork, I believe it’s from the Fairmont resort — we organize the sale and we get 50 per cent of the sales.”

GALs is currently fostering more than 50 animals, and frequently covers the expenses of spaying

and neutering.

“We have a lot of food and vet costs going into taking care of those rescue animals,” she said. “And as always (supporting) rescue animals is good.”

Supporting this fundraiser will be specially convenient for those looking to decorate or get some Christmas shopping taken care of ahead of time.

“There will be a wide variety of different subject matter, all different sizes, small ones from eight by ten to three feet by two feet,” said Ms. De Groot.

Prices range from $15 to $100 and only cash will be accepted.

If enough stock is left over after Saturday, the GALs will open up shop at the Community Hall again on Saturday, December 13th.

Food instead of fines This November, the Invermere Public Library will be running a Food for Fines program. Patrons can clear overdue fines by making a donation to the food bank. One non-perishable item will clear up to $5 of fines, two items clears up to $10, and three items will clear up to $15, which is the maximum overdue fines that can accumulate per card. Some items the food bank suggest donating are peanut butter, cereals, and canned fruit, tuna, salmon, vegetables, brown beans, pasta sauce, and soup.

Recently, our library made the choice to remove overdue fines from juvenile material so the Food for Fines program will only apply to adult material. However, we will have a grocery cart prepared for food donations and encourage our young readers to participate despite their fine-less accounts.

The decision to remove overdue fines from juvenile material was made after we heard another all-toocommon story from a patron who avoided the library when they were a child in order to elude looming overdue fines. This familiar tale is one that is well-known in the library world and something many libraries

are taking steps to avoid. The previous fine for juvenile material was $0.10 a day and decidedly not worth discouraging young readers.

Overdue fines are one of the traditions closely associated with the stereotype of a shushing librarian, glasses perched upon her face and her hair tightly pulled back into a bun. Anyone who has been to the

Photo submitted Invermere Public Library knows that stereotype is long gone. Overdue fines on the other hand still have a role to play in our adult collection.

Currently there are over 180 titles overdue at the library. Those fines are there, not as a punishment, but as an incentive to make sure those books make it back to the shelf in a

timely manner so others can enjoy them. There is even a grace period in case you are only a day or two late.

The library has recently started making phone calls to patrons without email addresses to remind them their books are overdue. This service was previously done with a letter in the mail; however, after the increase of stamp costs, the switch to phone calls was made. As soon as we dial the number, we prepare ourselves to quell any guilt that may be apparent in the voice on the other side of the line. We cross our fingers and hope they are not visualizing a nasty finecollecting librarian.

Not everyone feels the same way about the overdue fines, which are set at $0.25 per day for adult material.

Many people bound into the library announcing their books are overdue, joking that their accumulating fees may even help provide a new library one day. For parents who miss those pesky fines, you can still make a donation or even adopt a book in your child’s name.

For November, everyone can feel good about getting overdue fines.

Don’t forget to come prepared with your non-perishable donation!

Shirley was born in Melbourne, Australia and grew up on the family farm. At a young age she was determined to get an education and challenged her Grade 8 exams allowing her to continue on to nursing school. She always had a passion for travelling which took her abroad to New York and then on to the Yukon where she first met the love of her life, Fred, and the Mauthner family.

In Invermere, Shirley could be found on the slopes of Panorama, enjoying a workout at the Valley Fitness Center with the ladies and visiting with all of her dear family and friends.

Recipe Of The Week PUMPKIN GINGER SNAP CRUNCH CAKE 1 29 oz can Pumpkin Puree 3 Eggs, beaten 1 12 oz can Evap Milk 1 ¼ cup Sugar 3 tsp Pumpkin Pie Spice

1 box Yellow Cake Mix 2 cup Ginger Snap Cookies, crushed 1 cup Toffee Bits 1 cup Butter, melted

In a large bowl mix the pumpkin, eggs, sugar and pumpkin spice.

Layer in the bottom of a greased 9’ x 13’ pan. Sprinkle dry cake mix over pumpkin mixture.

Layer the crushed Ginger Snap cookies and then the toffee bits over the cookie layer.

Drizzle the melted butter over top of all.

Marvel-ous trail help Tracy Flynn Summit Trail Makers Society Thanks to the diligent efforts of a fabulous Summit Trail Makers Society trail crew and the amazing assistance of Lyle and Steve Wilson from Nipika Mountain Resort, the Marvel Pass and Assiniboine Lake trails, roads and bridges are in the best shape they’ve been in for years after some excellent trail maintenance in early October.

Steve from Nipika volunteered his bobcat time and labor to smooth out rough sections on the final few kilometres of road. Blaine and his hardworking crew (David, Peter, Glenn, Steve and Lyle) replaced and patched the decking on the two vehicle bridges that precede the trail heads (these bridges had deteriorated to the point where passage was difficult ). The decking materials were supplied by the Ministry of Forests Lands and Natural Resources - Engineering program and Recreation Sites and Trails.

Lyle and Steve repaired the foot bridges and Margaret, Linda, Harold, John, Cheryl, Nancy, Laura and Peter completed some minor brushing on the Marvel Pass trail. Kars, Elizabeth, Margaret, Laura, Barrie and Kirsten cleared the Assiniboine Lake trail of dead-fall and avalanche debris and completed some trail brushing work (a special thank you to Kars and Elizabeth for devoting two days of their own time to take the chainsaw operators course, which gave them the training necessary to complete the work).

Barrie’s chain saw skills came into play at the log/cable foot bridge which crossed the “turbulent cascade” about 2 kilometres up the trail. Tightening the cable and placing another log next to the existing log now makes for a worry-free crossing experience. Having the tool trailer that we share with the Columbia Valley Greenways Trail Alliance on site was a real advantage and help as well.

This project is an example of how different clubs working together, with the support of government, can make a real difference. The work done greatly improves access to two of our area’s most scenic trails.

Bacon, Friends and Faith

By Laura Hermakin Reverend Christ Church Trinity Recently, I have spent a great deal of time reflecting on what the gospel really is.

Of course, the gospel is simple — in a word, Love! Any of us can reflect on love in its many forms and consider the ways that we see and know God in the world. We can also consider how each one of us can feel lonely or alone or overwhelmed at times, and what an incredible gift it can be to simply have the opportunity and gift of a visit with friends.

We have an incredible ministry happening at our church in Invermere that just warms my heart in new ways all of the time. In fact, there are times when just standing at a distance and watching and listening to the beautiful things being experienced takes my breath away. In a time when there hasn’t been an abundance of children in church, our response has been to create a group called BFF

(Bacon, Friends and Faith). A small group meets at 9:30 a.m. most Sunday mornings prior to our regular morning worship service at 10:30 a.m. Breakfast is shared, but this group does so much more than just “have breakfast”. We range in age from newborn to 96 and come from diverse backgrounds. BFF allows us the time to share a meal together, to develop life-long friendships, and to share wisdom each of us has gained through life experience.

The group is constantly shifting as people attend when they are led and able. I delight in this group, which I can only join sporadically, because BFF is so much more than just sharing a meal together. It nourishes and offers us sustenance for the days to come. One person expressed a wonderful thought that it is really like feeding the family or sharing communion. As people connect at the start of a busy week, the adults among us impart knowledge, wisdom and life experiences to our children and youth and the youth infuse our adult lives with curiosity, enthusiasm and wisdom of their own.

It seems to me that this ministry is worth sharing with all of you. So, thank you for the privilege of being able to do that today. And, in the words of a popular song: Come in and sit down. You are a part of the family. Call ahead and we’ll set out a plate for you. We’d love to have you over!
