The Kootenay Conservation Program (KCP) awarded its annual Conservation Leadership Awards as part of its annual gathering in Creston on September 26th.

Invermere resident Nancy Newhouse (left) was one of two recipients of the award (the other being Jennifer Yeow of the Slocan Valley). Nancy has been actively involved in conservation in the East Kootenays for over 20 years. She began working for the Nature Conservancy of Canada in 2009 in the role of Canadian Rocky Mountains program manager based out of Invermere.

Prior to this she was the program manager for the East Kootenay Conservation Program, which was initiated in 2002 with a goal of conserving the working landscape in the East Kootenay and has evolved into the Kootenay Conservation Program. Nancy has also been involved in numerous wildlife conservation projects including badger research, roadkill mitigation, riparian research, and wildlife viewing programs.

On being a recipient of the Conservation Leadership Award, Nancy (who is accepting the 2014 Conservation Leadership Award from KCP Chair Derek Petersen in the photo to the left) said it feels “awesome.”

“I’m really proud of the work KCP does and I was really honoured to be selected,” she said. “I’m thrilled about the work we’ve done.”

Nancy says the success of Columbia Lake’s Lot 48 is “near and dear” to her heart. Other notable projects she’s proud of include the conservation lands recently purchased by Teck in the Elk Valley and bringing back the grasslands at Kootenay River Ranch south of Canal Flats.

Work on Jumbo resort on hold pending decision

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff As construction work in the Jumbo Valley winds down while the province reviews and decides whether or not the Jumbo Glacier Resort project is substantially started — and correspondingly whether or not Glacier Resorts Ltd.’s environmental assessment certificate will expire — the project continues to pique attention throughout the valley and beyond.

Last week the assessment office sent a letter to Glacier Resorts Ltd. addressing the company’s non-compliance with three conditions of its environmental assessment certificate, but the office clarified to The Pioneer that this does not have direct bearing on the province’s review of and decision on whether the project is substantially started.

The certificate was granted in 2004 with the condition that it would expire if the province deems the project not ‘substantially started’ by October 12th, 2014.

“The decision on whether the project has been substantially started is a one-time process that is distinct from the ongoing compliance oversight by the government. The minister (of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations) or associate deputy minister will consider any information he or she deems relevant in determining whether

the project has been substantially started,” said Ministry of Environment spokesperson David Karn.

Although the assessment office has never given a clear definition of what exactly constitutes “substantially started”, resort proponents expressed confidence that construction work in the last few weeks — which has involved cement trucks and work crews in the Upper Jumbo Valley among other activities — will comfortably qualify.

“The substantial start has been achieved. The deadline was met two days early on October 10th. It will take some weeks before the results of the environmental assessment office inspection and determination are made public. Work has stopped while the review is underway,” said Glacier Resort Ltd. vice-president Grant Costello.

The three not-complied-with conditions (condition 57, condition 72 and condition 146 in the environmental assessment certificate) referenced in the Thursday, October 9th letter from environmental assessment office policy and compliance manager Autumn Cousins to Pheidias Project Management Corp. president Oberto Oberti relate to water quality and habitat sampling; and to monitoring of unsupervised recreation access. The letter recommends measures to address the water quality and habitat condition noncompliance, including setting up water measure stations, and conducting bank surveys.

Mail-in voting still unavailable to Invermere residents

By Nicole Trigg Pioneer Staff An Invermere couple who was hoping to vote in this year’s local government election will have to wait until 2018 to exercise their democratic right at the municipal level.

John and Joan Rouse initially inquired about mail-in voting for the District of Invermere shortly before the 2011 election. Some jurisdictions in B.C. allow mail ballot voting for those eligible voters who cannot physically attend a voting place or are unable to vote on advance and general voting days. The Rouses, who are eligible B.C. voters, leave the valley shortly after Thanksgiving each year to travel south, and upon learning Radium Hot Springs and the Regional District of East Kootenay allowed for mail-in voting, had requested that Invermere council do the same. At the time, there wasn’t enough time to change the necessary bylaws so nothing could be done for the 2011 election, but the Rouses were left with the impression that mail-in voting would be permitted for 2014. It wasn’t until August that they learned no provision had been made for mail-in ballots for the upcoming

“Based on that conversation (in 2011 with chief administrative officer Chris Prosser), it was our understanding that mail in ballots would be accommodated for the 2014 election,” wrote Mr. Rouse in an email to the District of Invermere on August 29th.

The topic was raised at a June 10th Council of the Whole meeting, at which time council voted not to proceed with the provision based on information provided to them by district staff. Mr. Rouse said he had no idea the vote had taken place until he called Invermere corporate officer Kindry Luyendyk, at which time he sent the aforementioned email urging Invermere council to enable mail ballot voting in time for the 2014 municipal election. But to the Rouses’ dismay, the deadline for doing so had already passed.

According to Invermere mayor Gerry Taft, when staff raised the topic of mail-in voting at the meeting in June, according to their research Invermere would have to do away with same-day registration — Invermere’s current system — and implement a voter’s list.

Marko Shehovac Columbia Valley RCMP The Facts I recently read Paul Denchuk’s letter to the editor, “Questioning the public value of Jumbo.” I was quite surprised and disappointed in his observations that led to his opinions, and how eventually his opinions became his facts in regards to this detachment’s involvement with our patrols/involvement at Jumbo. There is that saying, “Everyone is entitled to their opinion” — but not entitled to make up their own facts.

I did phone Paul after reading his article and provided him with correct information. Explaining the police concern and involvement with Jumbo would take up more space than allowed, however I will attempt to answer Paul’s concerns and editorial comments. So, let’s deal with some facts when it comes to the detachment’s involvement.

Last summer, I made a commitment to the protest/ observer group that I and others would do our best to attend the camp as often as possible. Not just to attend to deal with a complaint. The purpose was to establish a relationship with everyone involved and make an attempt to build trust with the police. It also gave me a good opportunity to learn more of the issue. It was a rough start at first, but I believe the many visits benefited the detachment and the people manning the camp.

It was also a great escape from paperwork.

Paul would like to suggest there were too many officers during one protest event when the concrete trucks were arriving on scene, and that our purpose was to supervise the pouring of concrete for a private development. All one has to do is read some of the blogs and comments from others who do not share the same philosophy or value as the majority, who are prepared to take criminal action. Not just civil disobedience, but comments that wish to entice violence. As one spokesperson stated to me last year, “I can’t speak for everyone here.” I, on the other hand, when I send officers into a

remote area with no proper radio communication, no idea of the number of protestors expected or makeup/intent of the protest group, and well aware of the deep passion and commitment of many, will prepare for the unknown and ensure the resources are in place to ensure the safety of everyone.

As for 40 per cent of the officers attending Jumbo rather than being available to attend to the valley communities, coverage is left in town for calls. Yes, we are certainly understaffed with our resources spread thin, but we deal with many pressures and challenges during the summer. Jumbo is simply one more added challenge.

As for Paul’s comment, “(The detachment) gets their marching orders from further up the chain,” I informed Paul during our phone conversation that all decisions over the last two summers as to when local police attend to Jumbo and in what numbers have been my decision.

It is clear to many in these types of situations where there is going to be interaction of protest/observer groups that many involved depending on their past interactions with the police look at us in a suspicious manner, mistrust and view the police as taking sides as I believe Paul has interpreted with his comment that we were there to supervise the pouring of concrete. His passion speaking out. Our involvement is to keep the peace, keep everyone safe and if a complaint is made to investigate as we normally would in any situation. Our main goal however is to establish a positive relationship, gain some trust and respect from both sides.

One important item I did take and appreciate from my conversation with Paul is proper communication between the Detachment and the protest organizations/societies. I have talked to many local individuals that I’m aware belong to some of these organizations and have made it known that I am willing to attend any meeting to discuss the police role. That commitment remains.

In this case, a warning has been issued as a preliminary step while the environmental assessment office determines if further enforcement is necessary, in consultation with other government agencies. Provided that the company continues to address the non-compliances, further enforcement may not be required.”

Mr. Karn said that the Environmental Assessment Office, the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources (FLNRO), and the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure have done 15 site visits and inspections since the end of July 2014, and that a review of key pre-construction requirements found the Jumbo Glacier Resort project in compliance with the majority of those requirements.

Mr. Costello confirmed that Glacier Resort Ltd. is taking steps to comply with the three conditions mentioned in the letter.

“The three non-compliance items which the assessment office has said they are working with us to complete are now substantially there. The water and volume measuring stations are set up and the creek mapping is complete and the reporting is underway. The unregu-

lated traffic monitoring report has been generated and we are awaiting feedback. Although these are important conditions to meet there is no chance of any environmental damage as a result of a delay in implementing these data collection activities,” he said.

The Pioneer contacted former Lake Windermere Ambassadors program manager Kirsten Harma, who has an MSc in Resource Management and Environmental Studies, for comment on the water monitoring measures mentioned in the letter, and she evaluated them as being top-notch.

“It’s a highly rigourous hydrological assessment (outlined in the letter), it includes water quality, water quantity and fish habitat. They’re kind of going above and beyond basic monitoring. Absolutely anything that could change they’re going to be monitoring,” said Ms. Harma.

Mr. Costello — in reference to a letter from Invermere councillor Paul Denchuk in the October 10th edition of The Pioneer criticizing Glacier Resorts Ltd. for not using local residents for the construction work — said that although some out-of-town contractors were used (for work on the ski lift; a bridge specialist; some concrete forming workers; and environmental consultants), many local contractors were also used, in all kinds of capacities, and quite a bit of the building supplies were sourced locally, particularly all the concrete, which came from Windermere.

Mr. Karn had previously said the process of reviewing whether or not the project is “substantially started” will take awhile, but could not give an exact timeline.

Ambassador adieu

The Columbia Valley lost one of its greatest ambassadors this week. Kirsten Harma, who’s been the program co-ordinator for the Lake Windermere Ambassadors for the last three and a half years, left Canada on Monday to return to her home soil in the U. S. of A. Her departure was not her choice. Given the option, she would have gladly stayed and continued her work as an intelligent and effective steward of the environment north of the border. It’s thanks to her knowledge and dedication to our watershed that awareness of Lake Windermere has flourished in recent years, as well as the activities around it.

In addition to diligently taking water samples and monitoring the lake’s health on a weekly basis throughout the summer months, Ms. Harma — who earned her Masters in Science at the University of British Columbia prior to moving to the valley — has held numerous educational talks and presentations throughout the valley, established herself as a regular columinist in both of the valley’s newspapers (Beneath the Surface in The Valley Echo and Watershed Wanderings in The Pioneer), grew what was once the Lake Windermere Regatta into the now-wildly successful Summer Splash that takes place each August, and engaged both locals and visitors in numerous other lake-focused events such as the Shoreline Cleanup and the Catch the Freeze contest, to name just two. While her replacement, Megan Peloso, has hit the ground running and is a wonderful addition to the community, it’s a crying shame that the Columbia Valley — and Canada, for that matter — could not retain Ms. Harma’s education and expertise.

Correction

In last week’s election story “Two of valley’s three mayors acclaimed pre-election” on page 3 (October 17th, The Pioneer), two electoral areas were mistakenly reversed for the Board of Education Trustee positions and one was not mentioned. Incumbent Rosemary Oaks was acclaimed to represent Area 5, while incumbent Amber Byklum is being challenged by Cory Stanbury in Area 4. Denny Neider was acclaimed to represent Area 3 (District of Invermere). All acclaimed positions were finalized on Monday, October 20th.

The Toby — goodbye old friend Dear Editor: I recall it clearly, the way you recall all moments of abject terror.

It was dark. My entire body was tense with fear.

And then something grabbed me. I screamed and jumped, and everyone around me started laughing.

Norman Gagatek, two seats down, had grabbed my shoulder from behind during a tense scene in some scary movie. Alien, I think, and I reacted just as he had hoped.

I cannot recall who else from our group was there, but I do recall that moment, and I will never forget the jolt of electricity that flew down my spine, nor the camaraderie of the people I was with.

We were at the Toby Theatre, a spot where so many good memories were created.

A place of first dates, stolen kisses, popcorn and cherry drink.

A place I had been going to since I was 12 years old, with friends, boyfriends and sisters, both by blood and by heart.

When I was older, I took my children and had hoped to one day take my grandchildren.

Some 30 years after my first movie there, I sat in my car weeping after I read the last notice on the marquee: “Toby Theatre. Thanks for the memories.

1952-2014. Closed.”

LETTERS . . . Continued from previous page I can remember the time my sister Sharon and my best friend Arly and I stood in line to see Back To The Future, only to be turned away with the rest of the end of the long line when the theatre was full. So we did what any responsible group of one adult and two teens would do — we headed down to the ape swing in Athalmer, stripped down to our bras and panties, swung into the river, shrieking and laughing, and caught the movie the next night.

I remember so many movies with my sons as well as dreaming up plans to win the lottery, buy the theatre and run it in the same tradition that long-time owners Ron and Elizabeth Peters had run it.

You see, it was not because they were tired of running the place. It is not that they longed to retire. But, with progress being the double-edged sword it is, they could no longer bring in movies that were compatible with their old projector. And the upgrade cost has just too many zeroes behind it to make it doable. As my friend Koos put it, on an unrelated topic but very fitting for the Toby as well, not every improvement is an amelioration.

Changes in technology, and the costs thereof, have not improved anything here, but rather robbed us.

As a teen, I was always a little in awe of Ron and Elizabeth. I think we all were.

But as an adult, I got to know the people who had been a part of my life in their own indelible way.

They held onto a time when you stood at the door at the end of the show,

thanking everyone who had come. They held onto a time when you behaved in the theatre, and who among us cannot recall at least one instance of Ron heading down the aisle with his flashlight, shushing the noises so everyone could enjoy the show.

They gave us, those of us who were so blessed to grow up here, that wonderful piece of ourselves, that piece that bespoke of community, of fellowship, of fun, scares, tears and laughter that a movie theatre can invoke. It was not an impersonal jaunt to a flick. It never was.

It would never be.

It was more than Roger Rabbit on the wall… more than model airplanes cruising beside the chandelier… more intermission and the best damned popcorn I have ever had. It was The Toby.

It was, and will remain in my heart, a cherished part of who I am, who I have become. My tears were not just for the future movies lost, but for the piece of this community that has passed on, an experience that can no longer be shared.

When I saw Elizabeth a few days after I sat weeping under that sign. I shared her tears in the grocery aisle, and she knew I understood. No words required, no explanation needed.

Thank you for everything Ron and Elizabeth. You watched me grow up. You watched my children grow up. Your theatre was more a part of our lives than perhaps you know.

Mistreated and matted Members of Invermere’s chapter of the Global Animal Lovers Society (GALS) took in an Alberta Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) rescue dog with incredibly matted fur last week.

The dog, whose has been given the name Molly, arrived in Invermere on Monday, October 20th. The local branch of GALS said it’s not uncommon for Alberta rescue animals to come here, as the SPCA tries to keep abused animals far away from the locations from which they were rescued.

Kootenay hikers safe amid Himalayan disaster

By Dan Walton Pioneer Staff Five Invermere hikers were among a group trekking together in Nepal during a series of deadly disasters last week, and all of whom have since been confirmed alive.

Through Happy Feet Mountaineering — a Nepalese Sherpa guiding company — the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was told that the members of the group were all alive.

The news came as a relief after a series of blizzards and avalanches in the Himalayas claimed the lives at least 43, four of whom were Canadian, earlier in October. The event has been recorded as Nepal’s worst-ever hiking disaster.

As relayed through Alex Hogg, the son of one hiker involved, his father contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he learned that his wife, Marie-Therese HoggRenner from Invermere, and the members of her group were alive and well. Alex said that

four to five days had passed before he and his father heard the confirmation.

On the trek with Marie-Therese from Invermere were Sylvie Janin, Marion and Marcel La Brie, and Bernie Rosner. Also in the group were other hikers from the Kootenays — Phil Best from Nelson, Terry Simpson of Rossland, as well as Yoland Derksen from Zurich, Switzerland.

Alex said that before the incident, the group was expecting to get back on the grid on Wednesday, October 29th, though obvious circumstances have made that date indefinite.

In addition to Canadian and Nepalese victims, the confirmed deceased include citizens of India, Israel, Poland, Japan, China, and Slovakia. The government will apply additional safety requirements before the start of next year’s hiking season, Nepal’s Department of Tourism said.

On a positive note, there is an abundance of dorsal unclothedness which will satisfy the Cameron Diaz fans. On the negative side, this is the only redeeming aspect of the film. The humour is overly contrived and, as a result, falls flat. The characters are one dimensional (except when in various states of arousal) and the story is vapid and painfully predictable. Even the presence of Jack Black as a sexploitive internet entrepreneur does not make this movie tick.

In short, if your libido insists on a painfully flaccid flick with gratuitous footage of unveiled gluteals, then pick this one up.

Columbia Valley Local Conservation Fund Request for Proposals The Kootenay Conservation Program (KCP) and Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) are seeking proposals for projects that will benefit conservation in the area from Spillimacheen to Canal Flats utilizing the Columbia Valley Local Conservation Fund (CVLCF). To apply for funding go to www.kootenayconservation.ca and click on the Local Conservation Fund tab. Review the Terms of Reference paying particular attention to Section 8 – Fund Design and then apply using the application form provided.

CVLCF funding is available for conservation projects that result in the reduction to a known threat to biodiversity. Projects that are technically sound and effective, and provide value for money through partnerships with other funders will have priority. Proponents must be a registered not-for-profit organization, First Nations band, or local government.

Unqualified groups or organizations may partner with a qualified organization. Multi-year projects are acceptable to a maximum three years. A Technical Review Committee will review project proposals and make recommendations to the RDEK for final funding approval.

Closing dates for project submissions is 4:30 p.m. October 31st, 2014.

Projects specific to land acquisition and/or conservation covenants may be submitted at any time during the year.

Caring crew amplifies music program

By Dan Walton Pioneer Staff The Windermere Valley Musicians Who Care made a very special visit to the Mountain Ridge Early Learning Program last week to beef up the youngsters’ musical assemblage. Through sales from their two albums — Songwriters in the Valley and Christmas in the Valley — Musicians Who Care were at Mountain Ridge on Tuesday, October 21st to donate a new set of percussion-based instruments, as well as a new MP3 system. The early learning program bases a large portion of its curriculum around music.

“Music is healthy for anyone to take part in,” said Ben Cameron, a member of Musicians Who Care and the owner of Wood Shop Productions, the studio that produced the CDs. “An early age is the perfect time to learn — they absorb things easily at that age — I learned

Mountain Ridge instructor Merisa Butler said instruments are used almost daily in the program, and that the generous addition from Musicians Who Care came as an unexpected bonus.

“We were very lucky to benefit from the new set of instruments,” Merisa said.

Parents and friends will be able to see the new instruments in action during the Mountain Ridge Halloween concert on Friday, October 31st.

“Thank you very much to Windermere Valley Musicians Who Care,” she said.

Support for similar community initiatives is ongoing, and supporting the cause is as easy as purchasing one of the two discs, which are easy to find at retailers throughout the valley.

“The community’s excitement and support on projects such as these has become the key to our community’s successes with cultural and artistic infrastructures,” reads the group website.

Tickets for the Songwriters in the Valley CD release party on Saturday, November 1st at Pynelogs are going fast. Proceeds for the party will go toward a new sound system for the proposed multi-use community centre in Invermere. See the ad on page 12 for details and where to purchase your tickets.

Zombie attacks imminent

By Dan Walton Pioneer Staff With Halloween approaching, residents of the valley are being warned of zombies swarming about.

Real Storage in Windermere will be reinforcing its headquarters in preparation for an attack on Saturday, October 25th.

“We want to show the Columbia Valley that we are their best defence in the event of a zombie apocalypse, and inviting a whole lot of zombies over is the best way to show that,” said Kim Baker, the manager of Real Storage.

Zombies are to show up at Real Storage in Windermere by 2 p.m., where first-timers will be given a brief zombie tutorial and the best-looking zombie will win a $50 gift card to The Source.

“Just look as dead as possible — like you have no spine practically,” she said.

“It’s something people enjoy doing, so we thought we’d get involved.”

And those willing to brave the zombies will be offered discounts on storage during the attack.

Saturday’s attack isn’t expected to be the last; eradicating the valley of zombies will take more than a single-pronged approach.

Beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday, October 31st, zombies are expected to lurk through the heart of Invermere.

For the second year in a row, Fire Vixen Tattoos has invited the undead to assemble at Pothole Park on the afternoon of Halloween. From there, they’ll be hunting for fresh meat while making their way to the Station Pub (new liquor laws now allow for minor-aged zombies to dine at the Station).

There’s no cost for zombies to attend either event, as they’ve both been organized for the love of Halloween.

By Dan Walton Pioneer Staff Home Hardware in Invermere is inviting the valley for some complimentary beef on a bun during their annual Customer Appreciation Day. The store will be offering the hardy meal on Saturday, November 1st, when display furniture will be repurposed for a makeshift dining room.

Owner Al Miller and his team will begin serving the hot beef at 11 a.m., and the delicacy will only last until it’s gone or 3 p.m.

Refreshments also include pop and coffee.

“It’s just a customer appreciation thing, and a way of saying thank you to all our loyal shoppers,” Mr. Miller said, adding optional donations to the local food bank would be accepted.

Customer appreciation events have been held every year at the local Home Hardware since its inception in 1993.

Is market volatility a positive thing?

The Canadian and US stock markets are currently in a 67-month bull market.

As of August 30th, the TSX Composite index had risen about 126 per cent since 2009.

September marked the beginning of a correction for the TSX, which fell 11.4 per cent between September 2nd and October 15th, before rebounding 2.5 per cent by market close on October 17th.

The markets haven’t seen price movements like this since early 2012.

While nobody likes to see the value of their investments fall, price volatility can be positive for the stock markets and investors in general.

Creates opportunities Most people are familiar with the concept of waiting until things go on sale to buy them.

In a relatively healthy economy and barring any negative company-specific news, minor corrections in stock prices are essentially the stock market’s way of putting them on sale.

The reasons why people decide to sell stocks are numerous, but the effect is the same.

If there is no specific reason why a particular stock should come under pressure, then a lower share price may create a buying opportunity.

Without price instability, there would be far fewer opportunities in the stock markets.

After all, yields on guaranteed investments are very low, and it’s hard to justify sitting on the sidelines when stocks appear to be on a neverending upward trajectory.

The problem is, people who are risk averse are simply not able to handle price volatility the way that some other people might. Compounding this is the fact that people often overestimate their risk tolerance when times are good, causing them to feel even more upset when the tide turns.

Simply put, market volatility has a tendency to return stocks to their rightful owners.

Cautions DIY investors Just as with risk tolerance, some people overestimate their investment knowledge, in some cases to the point of thinking that stock picking takes no expertise.

Based on the events of the past several years, it’s easy to see why.

After all, people were bound to make money during the past five years if they just bought a few large-cap stocks or exchange-traded funds (ETFs), right?

Well, in many cases, yes. The problem is that many people who trade their own investments tend to trade based on hearsay instead of fundamental analysis.

And when the markets turn, some do-it-yourself investors have a tendency to panic and make quickselling decisions. They may feel like they’ve saved their portfolio, but in reality they could be making someone else rich instead.

In short, volatility can be a valuable reminder that there is a difference between speculating and investing.

Final thoughts Some people worry that market corrections could be indicative of another financial crisis, or that they should sell stocks in case the markets keep declining.

This makes sense as it can be uncomfortable to watch the price of something decline if a person doesn’t know what the value of that something is.

There are very few things in life that fit this description, one of them being stocks. People know what they paid for stocks, or what a stock was priced at on a certain day, but not everyone understands how to calculate their true intrinsic value.

In a market such as the one we’ve had for the past five years, some volatility should be considered healthy.

Too much volatility, however, is not a good thing, as it can be indicative of a larger problem.

Not everyone who goes to Vegas returns home richer than they left, but The Amazing Jeremy says he did just that.

Invermere’s own “The Amazing Jeremy” (whose real name is Jeremy Stevens) went to Las Vegas earlier this month to study at the McBride Magic & Mystery School, operated by Las Vegas magic headliner Jeff McBride and his teacher, Eugene Burger, from October 2nd to 4th — something he’s wanted to do all his life.

“It was a dream come true,” said Jeremy.

While in Vegas, The Amazing Jeremy not only got to work with Mr. McBride and Mr. Burger, but also met magic legend Mario Morris, and performed his favourite trick — cups and balls — in front of the Caesars Palace Hotel & Casino.

“I like to show people that drugs and alcohol aren’t the only things going on.”

Jeremy has been practicing magic since he was five years old, and has been performing stage magic for the past five years. He is also a drug and alcohol role model for youth: “I like to show people that drugs and alcohol are not the only things going on, and that you don’t need them to be successful.”

Jeff McBride and Eugene Burger are the founders of the McBride Magic & Mystery School. Both were named among the 100 most influential magicians of the 20th century by magicians trade magazine MAGIC, and have won numerous awards between them.

They have been teaching together since 1987, conducting over a dozen class events each year. At least once a year, they take the school “on the road” — this year to the UK and Amsterdam. Former students have won awards at every major convention in the U.S., and even at the international championships.

“I learned a whole bunch of stuff they personally know and no one else,” said Jeremy, adding that he signed a contract not to tell anyone, but he is free to perform what he learned.

Come spring, you had better get out and cut down the ornamental grass or the new growth will just shoot up from under the old growth. The lawn needs cutting when it gets long and if you don’t do it when it needs doing, you won’t have a lawn but a meadow. The fruit ripens and needs picking or the birds will do it for you. You get the idea.

The deadline that we have before us today is winter.

We can go south to escape the cold and wind, but your garden does not have that option.

It is with this in mind that I offer you my comprehensive to-do list for gardeners. It is designed to be clipped and hung on the refrigerator, or wherever. Put it somewhere where it will remind you regularly what you need to consider in order to enjoy a great-looking garden come spring.

Lawns Fertilize your lawn. This is the most important application of the year. The nutrition that your lawn receives this time of year will not produce a great-looking lawn this fall, but it will strengthen the grass roots and prepare the plants for a fast green-up come spring. The results are less snow mould and a stronger, green lawn after the spring melt. Look for a winterizing product, like Golfgreen Fall Lawn fertilizer, for best results.

Cut your lawn (soon, for the last time!) about two and a half inches or six centimetres high.

Lubricate your lawn mower.

Sharpen the blades, clean the cutting deck and spray with oil.

Rake leaves off your lawn. Put them on your perennial beds and veggie garden where they will break down and help to build the organic matter in your soil.

Compost and leaves Put spent annual plants in your composter or compost pile in layers with fallen leaves (shredded with your lawn mower). Alternate one-part green stuff with three parts leaves.

Remove the finished compost from your compost unit or pile and spread it over your perennial bed or veggie garden. No need to dig it in as the worms will pull it down next spring.

Winterizing Begin thinking about winterizing your roses that are not of the “shrub” type. Hybrid Teas, Grandifloras, Floribundas etc. will need about 50 centimetres (1.5 feet) of fresh triple mix piled up from the bottom. The best time to do this is just before the Grey Cup game — the game is your reward for doing the job!

Wrap spiral plastic collars on young fruit trees to protect them from rodent damage (anytime).

Spray broad-leafed evergreens with Wilt-Pruf® (an anti-desiccant) to prevent the drying effects of winter wind (when killing frosts are here and just before the snow flies.)

Wipe down all of your digging and cutting tools with an oily cloth when you are finished with them for the season.

Plant colour!

On a more positive note, remember that there are plants that will survive and even thrive in cold weather.

Belgium Mums, New England Asters, Sedum Spectabile and ornamental grasses all look great this time of year.

Don’t forget flowering cabbage and kale: they improve their looks with frost!

Pumpkins, ornamental grasses, corn stalks, hay bales and goose necked squash can all play a part in an entrance display at the front of your home. Be creative and have fun.

Glacier Peaks Gymnastics adds second home

By Dan Walton Pioneer Staff Glacier Peaks Gymnastics has grown to include a second location in the valley.

With the addition of its newest location in the Industrial Park, local gymnasts can now practice in both Invermere and Radium Hot Springs.

At the location in Radium, “things are going really well as far as training goes and the kids are learning some really cool skills and tricks,” said head coach TC Rogers. “But to keep the club’s longevity going and to grow a bigger base, Radium alone wasn’t working.”

Glacier Peaks was founded two years ago, and operated its first year out of the large white quonset hut on Highway 93/95 north of Invermere.

After moving last year into the old elementary school in Radium, the club benefitted from its high ceilings, but was in search of more space and a home closer to Invermere.

“The Radium gym is primarily a tramp and tumbling club,” said Ms. Rogers. “Invermere now offers uneven bars, balance beams, and new vaulting apparatuses.”

The convenient location of the Industrial Park gym has helped the group grow exponentially. Glacier Peaks had 57 members at the end of last spring, and is now instructing more than 300 gymnasts. And the group is now working hard to sustain its growth. Although nine coaches are undergoing training to take on the instructional roles, only three coaches are currently qualified to offer all of the training.

And as the club continues to grow its members, one central location in Invermere may eventually become more feasible with a larger clientele, she said.

“You can imagine going back and forth between two gyms with 300 kids.”

Amid the logistical challenges, how-

ever, the team is helping athletes prepare to compete on the international stage.

“These kids are basically training out of a garage and they’re going to put Invermere on the map,” she said, referring to 12 local students who are preparing for the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympics.

“The Junior Olympics is a program to look at long-term athlete development.”

#25 Jayden Jefferson One of the youngest members of the Columbia Valley Rockies’ roster this season is 16-year-old Jayden Jefferson.

He’s playing a big role, appearing on the penalty kill and on the second defensive line. At 6 feet tall, he is already putting some more size on the blue line and will likely add to that as the season progresses and he continues to grow.

“It’s a lot different playing for the Rockies, and a lot faster,” he says comparing his experiences thus far to last year’s season with the local Midget squad. “The guys I’m playing with are

four to five years older and more experienced than me.”

“Jeffy” learned to skate at the age of two taking lessons from local instructor Denise Reid, and started playing hockey at four. He’s a Grade 11 student at David Thompson Secondary School with dreams of playing for a BCHL team, getting a scholarship, and playing in the NCAA while studying engineering. His parents Kim Green and John Jefferson along with his younger brother Jagger are long-time Rockies’ supporters.

S OBITUARY S Barck, Rune Fjalar

March 17th, 1949 – October 13th, 2014

Rune Fjalar Barck, passed away from a heart attack, suddenly and unexpectedly on October 13th, 2014 in Vancouver, B.C. where he was visiting his daughters and grandchildren. He was born on March 17th, 1949 in Stockholm, Sweden, to Frans and Gloria Barck.

In 1975 he immigrated to Invermere, B.C., and worked as a plumber. He married Lindsay Barck (Matlock) and together they raised their daughters, Amy and Kristina and Lindsay’s daughter, Tanya, whom he adopted.

Shortly after arriving in Invermere, his family formed Skandia Concrete. It was passed to Rune and his older brother Rolf.

They ran the business, to which they added Kootenay Paving.

After they sold, they continued to run the company. Rolf eventually retired and retirement was in Rune’s short-term plans, as well.

These companies continue to contribute to the local community, and Rune was proud of the work he did.

Although Rune could not let go of Invermere, he spent whatever time he could in Vancouver with his daughters and grandchildren.

He was an avid golfer, if he wasn’t at work, he’d most likely be at a golf course, practising at the range or playing a round with a friend.

He was caring, thoughtful, easygoing, sarcastic at times and one of the most optimistic men you could ever meet.

Rune was pre-deceased by his father, Frans, and is survived by his mother Gloria Barck, his older brother Rolf, his younger sister Karin, Lindsay, his daughters Kristina, Amy and Tanya, their children, and many nieces, nephews, extended family and close friends.

A celebration of Rune’s life will be held on Saturday October 25th at 3 p.m. at Copper Point Resort in Invermere, B.C. A private celebration for the family will also be held.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation in Calgary.

It is with great sadness that the Maurer family announces the passing of Shirley Maurer. Shirley slipped away peacefully on October 17th at the age of 83 years.

Shirley was born on October 5th, 1931 in Vancouver, B.C. to Robert and Amalia Gaske.

She had two brothers and one sister. After the passing of her mother, Shirley moved to the Windermere Valley with her father in 1949. Shirley met the love of her life and married Fritz Maurer on November 3rd, 1951.

Shirley was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She is survived by her husband of 62 years Fritz, her four daughters Christy Brown (Bill), Sonia Blackwell (Rick), Susan Halverson (Richard), and Kathy Weismiller. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Shirley enjoyed her life on the Big Horn Ranch, gardening, reading, and spending time with her family. Shirley will be remembered by her family and friends for her caring, kind and gentle nature.

At Shirley’s request a private family service will be held at a later date. If friends so desire memorial donations in Shirley’s memory may be made to Columbia House, 850- 10th Avenue, Invermere, British Columbia, V0A 1K0 Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service.

Recipe Of The Week MAPLE BERRY RICE PUDDING 1 tblsp All-Purpose Flour 2 cups Milk 1/3 cup Rice, short grain 2 tblsp Maple Syrup

½ tsp Vanilla 2 cups Blueberries, Raspberries or a mixture (thawed, if frozen)

In a deep heavy saucepan, whisk flour into milk.

Stir in rice and bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring often.

Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer for 20 – 25 minutes or until rice is tender.

Remove from heat; stir in maple syrup and vanilla.

Let cool slightly to thicken and then stir in berries.

Serve warm or cold.

Food on the fly Local landscaper Peter Pankovitch has been heading down to the confluence of Toby Creek and the Columbia River once to twice a year for the past five years to capture on camera the spectacular scene of California Gulls swooping down to the water, plucking out Kokanee salmon, and literally eating them on the fly. On Monday, October 13th in the early afternoon, he patiently hid in the bushes and waited for an hour or so before lucking out.

Mayor Taft said that after receiving the Rouses’ correspondence in August and another email in September, staff looked at the issue again. After calling a couple of communities, such as Kelowna, that allow mail-in voting, it was discovered mail-in voting didn’t automatically exclude same-day registration.

“It turns out that some of them (communities) have mail-in voting but don’t have a voters list and still do same-day registration,” said Mayor Taft. “So there seems to be different ways of doing this.”

At the most recent council meeting on October 14th, the Rouses learned that if staff knew back in June what they know now, the decision would have been made to allow mail-in voting for Invermere residents. Council has now given direction to staff “to start working on it right away so that the same thing doesn’t happen four years from now,” said Mayor Taft. “I think in hindsight it was a mistake; it should have been looked at sooner.”

“I’m still so frustrated because it will be seven years before we get to vote for mayor and council, and a lot of people are in that position, not just those who go away for retirement holidays. There are also a number of businesses whose staff go away; November is slow so that’s when they go,” said Mrs. Rouse.

There are also permanent residents of Invermere who are qualified to vote, but who may be working outside the area and are therefore unable to attend the advance polls and the actual voting day, or people who might be physically unable to vote if they’re in

the hospital in Cranbrook or Invermere, she added.

“Here we’ve got two jurisdictions that are smaller than Invermere and they were able to get their act together to allow mail-in voting,” she said.

According to Radium Hot Springs’ chief administrative officer and chief elections officer Mark Read, mail-in voting was put in place in Radium for the 2011 election.

“There had actually been interest expressed for the previous election, but you have to have your bylaw in place by August so we missed the deadline in the 2008 election,” said Mr. Read, “so we made a commitment to evaluate it for the 2011 election and we just got it all in place.”

Ten mail-in voting packages went out in that election — even one to Scotland — and all were received back in time, despite strict time constraints.

“It’s their responsibility to get them back,” he said. “In this (coming) election, the last day we’ll mail out packages is November 7th (but) we will still make mail-in packages available right up to basically the 13th at 4 p.m. Theoretically, someone could pick up the ballot on the Thursday and get it to someone who is down in the States (by courier) and get it back to us by 8 p.m. on voting day.”

Mr. Read said he does not recall being consulted by District of Invermere staff on Radium’s mail-in voting.

“Initially, I was concerned it was going to be an onerous administrative issue, but now that we’ve got a system laid out, it’s really quite simplistic,” he said, adding that the cost is also “minor.”

“We’re not talking a huge number, but it’s nice for people to have the ability to vote.”

Henrik has been staying billet-style with three different host families during his time in England — one for each of the clubs he’s tried out at — and has found them all friendly and welcoming. He’s also adjusting to English culture.

“I’m getting used to the accents and the British slang,” he said.

Henrik will fly back to Vancouver today (Friday, October 24th), but said he’s ready to turn right back around on another flight should he get an offer from one of the clubs.

Keepers of the Aquarium or Fishers of Men?

David Morton, Associate Pastor, East Kootenay Lutheran Parish This year my 11-yearold son received help in setting up his first freshwater tropical 10-gallon aquarium as part of his birthday celebrations. Having tended aquariums myself when I was his age, I am excited to pass on the tradition. There is much responsibility: creating and maintaining the micro-ecosystem, and then, after a week or so when it is ready, putting in some good hardy fish. Then, once again, maintaining the environment and when it is ready adding different fish that feed and swim at different levels and so on, until a wonderful show tank is created.

This is similar to our experience as Christians too.

We are keepers of the aquarium — the church, if you will. The late Sam Shoemaker, an Episcopalian bishop, summed it up this way: “In the Great Commission the Lord has called us to be — like Peter — fishers of men.

We’ve turned the commission around so that we have become merely keepers of the aquarium. Occasionally,

I take some fish out of your fishbowl and put them into mine, and you do the same with my bowl. But we’re all tending the same fish.” (Em Griffin, The Mindchangers, Tyndale House, 1976, p. 151) The 21st century North American typical church in a fish bowl is not what Jesus had in mind when He told us to go, “…And make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (The Holy Bible, NIV ed., Matt. 28:19-20) So what are we to do? Well, as I shared at the outset, one thing we can do, is first recognize that we are tending an aquarium and begin to recognize how we can introduce new folks into our environs that have not been in there before.

Maybe we can share how God transformed our lives, or maybe we can help someone else to see that God is still alive and working in the 21st century. Some keepers of the aquarium have not been good stewards of the fish in their care.

Maybe we can help people to find new hope and forgiveness as Christ first showed them long ago, and allow the Holy Spirit to restore to them the joy of their salvation. There are many around us who our faith can benefit. Sometimes our deeds and actions carry much more strength than just words. Are you an aquarium keeper or a fisher of men?… Both require much prayer and responsibility. God bless you!
