Panebianco trial underway in Cranbrook court

Cory Jarock died of hypothermia after being kicked out of a house party in Invermere in April 2012, according to the prosecution in the trial of Brian Panebianco.

The 25-year-old Invermere man is charged with manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death, robbery and assault causing bodily harm in the death of 31-year-old Mr. Jarock, who was found deceased on April 3rd, 2012 in the driveway of a home in Invermere’s Tunnacliffe Heights neighbourhood.

The two-week trial got underway Tuesday, January 14th in Cranbrook Supreme Court before Justice Kenneth Ball and a 14-person jury, including two alternates.

Crown prosecutor Lynal Doerksen began the evidence by addressing the jury.

“This case is a tragic case. It’s something that didn’t have to happen and could easily have been avoided,” he said.

Mr. Doerksen went on to summarize the evidence he

would be presenting. He told the jury that two young women invited a group of friends, including Mr. Panebianco and Mr. Jarock, to a small party on April 2, 2012.

People were drinking, and Mr. Jarock “drank an awful lot,” explained Mr. Doerksen. One of the girls asked Mr. Panebianco to deal with Mr. Jarock, who had become a nuisance. “Unfortunately, he did that in a way that is not acceptable,” said Mr. Doerksen.

Mr. Panebianco assaulted Mr. Jarock, threw him outside and left him there, Mr. Doerksen told the jury, adding the temperature that spring night dipped below freezing.

When Mr. Panebianco left the party about 45 minutes later, Mr. Jarock was still outside.

Invermere realtor Daniel Zurgilgen was called as a witness to describe what he saw when he drove down the street the next day at about 1 p.m.

Mr. Zurgilgen testified that he was turning around in the cul-de-sac on 5th Avenue when he saw a person lying on a driveway. He pulled over and began to approach the person. Mr. Jarock was lying on his front with his backside

exposed, he wasn’t wearing shoes and his limbs were blue, Mr. Zurgilgen said. He stopped two metres away from the man and called 911.

A tape of the 911 call was played during the trial. Mr. Zurgilgen can be heard talking to the BC Ambulance dispatcher.

“He’s not moving. It’s not looking good,” he said on the tape. The paramedic who responded also testified Tuesday that when he arrived on the scene, he checked Mr. Jarock’s vital signs and determined that he was deceased.

Two RCMP officers, one a forensic specialist, also gave evidence about the scene. Cst. Christopher Sheppard was the first RCMP officer to respond. He saw a jacket, two shoes and socks and a baseball cap scattered around the front yard.

Cpl. Eric Page told the court that he found traces of blood on the pavement and on the steps leading to the house, but it was too faint to be tested.

The testimony continues in Cranbrook Supreme Court this week.

Water advisory, community centre discussed at council

By Steve Hubrecht, Pioneer Staff This past summer’s boil water advisory and the new community centre both generated a good deal of discussion at this week’s Invermere council meeting.

Council received a report from district staff, stemming from the boil water advisory in Invermere on July 9th, 2013, outlining four action items in response to the situation — review the SCADA

( or supervisory control and data acquisition) system alarms; add more real-time chlorine level residual data (the district’s water system currently has four in-line chlorine analyzers and staff recommend adding one more downtown and one more at Pynelogs); update the emergency response plan twice a year (currently it’s only done once a year) and develop an inventory of especially vulnerable citizens (those with compromised immune systems); and change emergency response training such

that all available district staff are assigned to focus on emergency situations when they arise.

“It seems there was some breakdown in our response through the night of July 8th, so I’m really glad to see the third and fourth items,” said councillor Paul Denchuck.

District staff also gave a briefing to council outlining the new community centre situation.

• On January 10th at 10:00 a.m., a citizen walking by observed a fire at a residence on Popular Street in Windermere.

A quick response by the Windermere Fire Department contained the fire to a small portion of the home. The fire appeared to have started near a space heater. No one was home at the time.

• On January 10th at 10:14 p.m., the Columbia Valley Detachment received a report of a cougar sighting in the area of 13th Street and 13th Avenue. Conservation officers were advised of this sighting. Immediate patrols were negative.

• On January 10th at 11:54 p.m., the detachment received a complaint of a noisy gathering on Greywolf Drive in Panorama. Police attended and observed a number of people gathered in the area. After a brief discussion with the police, the noise level was turned down a notch and no further complaints were received.

• On January 11th at 2:09 a.m., the detachment responded to a single vehicle rollover on Highway 93/95 south of Windermere. A 2002 Dodge Ram pickup lost control on the icy road and went into the ditch. There were no injuries to the 49-year-old male driver from Invermere.

• On January 12th at 5:55 p.m., detachment members responded to a single vehicle accident on Toby Creek Road. The 19-year-old driver from Radium Hot Springs was traveling towards Invermere and near Peter’s Hill on a sharp left turn, he lost control and went into the ditch on the right down a 70-foot embankment. There were minor injuries to the driver. Vehicles had been traveling up and down the hill before and after the accident without any problems. As a result, the driver was issued a ticket for failing to keep right.

• On January 13th at 4:30 p.m., the Columbia Valley Detachment received a report of theft of skis from Panorama Ski Hill. The skis are described as Nordica Soul Rider 185/186 centimetre skis, green in color with skulls on them.

• On January 13th at 6:00 p.m., police attended a residence in Canal Flats on a complaint of an intoxicated female causing problems at the home and refusing to leave the residence when requested. The 33year-old female had departed but later returned to the . . . ‘Water advisory’ from page 3

Staff proposed proceeding with a two-stage consultation process — one-on-one meetings with likely user groups in early February, followed by a town hall meeting letting the public express their desire for the building.

One shack had been burnt. A suspect vehicle was later located and a number of the stolen items were recovered from the vehicle. An adult male was arrested and the investigation is continuing.

While posted in Rossland in the 1980s, I worked evening shift the night before Halloween, which in that part of the Kootenay is called Gate Night. The kids raise a little hell. It was customary for kids to load up with eggs and target the police vehicles. It was a cat-and-mouse type of evening. Rather, they target the police vehicles, then businesses in town.

Rule one: you do not target the members, but the car was fair game. Rule two: better not get caught.

Getting caught resulted in immediate apprehension; the Charter of Rights did not exist. Rule three: calling Mommy and Daddy was not allowed.

Parents supported us 100 per cent. Apprehension resulted in hard labor back at the detachment, washing the police vehicle.

During the evening I seized a carton of eggs from a young fellow. During the patrols, I would exit the police vehicle and zero in on one of the youths in the group and demand that I check his pocket for eggs.

Those that did not run obviously knew they had unloaded or were not packing and gladly obliged.

I would palm one of the eggs that I had seized earlier, and when checking the pockets, gently planted the egg. Surprise, surprise, I find an egg, look at the kid and pat him down hard enough resulting in the egg to explode in his pocket. One kid actually said he thought he got rid of them all. Once the kids caught on to what I was doing, they were not so obliging to my command to come to me.

“It’s really important to separate between the basic-level must-haves (for the new centre) and the things that would be really nice to have but may not be completely necessary,” said Invermere Mayor Gerry Taft. “We need to get some guidance from people on what the centre should be, but we need to give guidance on what is feasible for us to achieve.”

A presentation to the community incorporating the results of the meetings will likely follow in April.

Para-skiers perservere at Panorama

By Dan Walton, Pioneer Staff There were no first-place finishes for any Canadian athletes last week, but several home-grown para-skiers made podium finishes at the 2014 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) World Cup at Panorama Mountain Village.

One participating Canadian who’s already qualified for this year’s Canadian paralympic team is Josh Dueck, a silver medallist at the 2010 Paralympics in Vancouver. During the Men’s Super-G sitting races on Tuesday, January 14th, Josh notched a time just 0.54 seconds behind the first-place finisher.

Josh told The Pioneer about the variable conditions that many Canadians have become accustomed to at Panorama.

“One day it was snowing, the next day it was sunny, one day it was icy, the next day it was powder; the variety, I thought, was really interesting, and it didn’t hurt me at all,” he said. Race organizers nimbly re-organized events to keep the races going on Sunday.

Between January 8th and 14th, para-alpine athletes were racing down the Oldtimer and Skyline runs at Panorama during the resort’s international competition, which involved 20 countries. The stakes are huge this year, as it was one of the final races for athletes from each nation to qualify for the 2014 Paralympic Games in Sochi, Russia.

The awards ceremonies at the central village were well-attended, as the grounds were able to comfortably accommodate the crowd regardless of their physical needs.

“They do a fantastic job making sure that the athletes are looked after,” said Alpine Canada director of events Pete Bosinger. While impressed by the resort’s ability to accommodate the athletes, Mr. Bosinger had higher expectations of the Canadian athletes.

“Alpine Canada knows that Canadians are capable of more podiums, but it’s early in the season and we did get some podiums,” he said.

One of the Canadian hopefuls is 19-year-old Alexandra Starker from Calgary, whose expertise on skis was largely crafted at Panorama having grown up with a second home in the valley.

Alexandra competed in races on Friday, January 10th, where she posted a total time of 1:50.79 after two heats of Downhill Standing races, earning 29 World Cup points with a ninth-place finish.

The next stop for the World Cup athletes is Copper Mountain in Colorado, starting today, Friday, January 17th.

Always-unpredictable frozen landscapes

An email on Monday morning from the Regional District of East Kootenay got straight to the point.

“The Windermere Fire Department is urging the public to use caution on the ice,” read the warning from Columbia Valley Rural Fire and Rescue Service fire chief Jim Miller. “While the ice is 15 inches or thicker in many areas, it can be five inches or less in others. We are urging everyone who uses and recreates on the lake to use common sense and caution, especially in areas like the mouth of Windermere Creek, where ice can be very thin.”

Sound familiar? With at least eight different incidents where vehicles of different sizes have broken through the ice in recent weeks, it’s a small miracle that no one has been seriously injured or worse.

Several of those vehicles were driven by people who got lost in the fog as they tried to find their way off the ice, after running into a barricade at Windermere Beach.

It wasn’t only the lake where unpredictable weather was wreaking havoc. Up at Panorama Mountain Village, para-skiers were also facing the wrath of Mother Nature. When the hill was blanketed in a big dump of wet powder to start the weekend, skiers and boarders rejoiced, but many racing sit-skiers and standing racers suffered “did not finish” race results.

However, several Canadians dialed it back and made us proud by earning podium finishes, and a few secured their spots on the Canadian contingent headed to the Paralympics in Sochi, Russia. We couldn’t be happier for these exceptionally friendly athletes, who took the time to get to know the community during their brief stay here. We wish them all the best in Sochi, where many will be able to draw on their experience at Panorama.

They have a black-tipped white tail and additional white showing on their rump. Micro-abattoir making good progress Dear Editor: I would like to update everyone on our progress with the “micro-abattoir” project that the Windermere District Farmers’ Institute has undertaken. We now have a web site available, www.wdfi. ca , created by one of our members. It will be updated as new developments arise.

We were able to place informational brochures in several local businesses for people to take. They can be found at Konig Meat and Sausage Company, Grant’s Foods, Circle Health Food and Town and Country Feeds.

Bob Fenimore, one of our previous veterinarians, now retired, has been lobbying for support and funding on our

behalf in Victoria. He has expressed the need, for those who are willing, to write to the Agriculture Minister Pat Pimm about our need for a local, provinciallyinspected abattoir.

I will be available to give any new updates, and to answer questions on Saturday, January 25th from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Town and Country Feeds store. For those interested, we now have associate memberships available.

The Regional District of East Kootenay will be grinding the wood waste and green waste at the Columbia Valley Landfill site over the next few weeks.

Not guilty plea entered in arson case

By Pioneer Staff An Invermere man charged with arson in connection with the fire at Columbia Eagle condominium in Fairmont Hot Springs pleaded not guilty to the charge in Invermere court this week.

Through his lawyer, Buffy Blakeley, Kris Weller entered the plea in provincial court on Tuesday, January 12th. His next appearance in court will be on February 11th to schedule a date for trial.

Crown lawyer Ann Katrine Settler and Mrs. Blakeley estimated the trial will last around four days, when asked for time estimates from the judge.

The former Columbia Eagle condominium block had been standing roughly half completed (with frames and walls constructed) in Fairmont for several years until it burned down to a concrete foundation and rebar in an intense fire more than a year ago on December 22nd, 2012.

Columbia Valley RCMP estimated the value of property lost to be $1.5 million to $2 million dollars.

The contractor is expected to be on site starting January 15, 2014 until January 31, 2014 and grinding will take place during regular landfill hours. The public is asked to stay well back from the equipment and machinery.

Movie Review: The Butler Reviewed by Lizzie Midyette The Butler is a fascinating retelling of the civil rights events that unfolded in the U.S. from the mid-20th century through to the present day. Focusing on one family’s story, it highlights the struggles that individual family members, as well as an entire generation, faced.

Opening with the brutal killing of his father on a Southern cotton plantation in the 1920s, Cecil Gaines is taken to work as a hotel valet where he becomes as successful as he can be, given the low status African-Americans held in the U.S. Due to his talent in hospitality, he finds himself working in the service of eight American presidents as a butler in The White House. Throughout his tenure, many events happen around him and to his family – in a similar way to how America changed around Forrest Gump as he went through life. The

Fundraiser planned for Rickards

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff The valley is showing its New Year spirit by banding together to help the Rickards family in their time of need.

Pioneer readers may be familiar with Carrie and Todd Rickards, who own and run Essentials in downtown Invermere, from a 2009 Mother’s Day issue story about the couple’s long road to adopting their daughter, Danica.

“She’s the light of our life; she is awesome, she’s great,” said Carrie. “She makes us laugh every day.”

But the family has been through some unfortunate times in past four years, with Todd battling cancer twice: colon cancer three years ago and liver cancer this past year.

Todd had surgery, followed by 12 rounds of chemotherapy once the colon cancer was found.

“He got better and the cancer went into remission,” said Carrie. Then, not long after the Canfor mill in Radium Hot Springs shut down and Todd had to go to Alberta to find work, he suffered a seizure.

“They don’t know if it (the seizure) was from the chemo or what,” said Carrie. Todd recovered, got back to work and was eventually able to return to work in the valley when the Radium mill re-opened.

Then in February 2013, Todd learned that cancer had spread to his liver from his colon. He had four more rounds of chemo and in November had another major surgery.

“Now we’re just waiting to see what happens,” said Carrie. “This what we’ve been dealt, so we are dealing.”

The cancer has not just taken a physical and emotional toll on the family, but a financial one as well.

As Todd has been off work for a total of 31 months in the past four years (owing to the cancer, the seizures and the mill closures at Radium), travel expenses are taking a

toll. Many of those travel expenses for his treatment are not covered by any health benefits.

Studies show the benefits of meditation

By Allison Bowen Meditation conjures images of monks, gurus, and new age seekers and tends to sit in “woo woo” territory for many. So you want me to sit quietly, focus on my breathing and stop thinking — yeah, Allison Bowen good luck with that.

For most beginners who try mediation, their conditioned brain response is to immediately start tending to the ever present “to-do list”. In today’s modern information age we are busy: always doing, and always distracted. Our brains tend to focus on future planning, past regrets, worry, fear and the latest new diseases that surface with alarming regularity.

However, for those who are skeptical, recent published scientific studies on meditation practices conducted at Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston University and the University of Toronto are producing astonishing and consistent results. The studies are similar in that there is an eighht-week program where volunteers meditate daily in a guided group session, as well as a control group that does not participate. Prior, during and after the program, all participants are given an MRI brain scan, with an additional follow-up scan up to four months after the study.

The studies show that meditators had access to the brain regions involving memory, learning, emotional regulation, self-awareness and perspective. As well, they had access to the brain region that provides a sense of here and now, as opposed to the region associated with worry.

“There is actually a link between changes in the brain and behaviour,” reads a Massachusetts General Hospital Meditation research study from January 2011. “Results showed an increased immunity, decreased inflammation in the body, higher resistance to pain and an improved emotional response to external situations. Meditation is proving effective towards chronic pain and stress-related illnesses such as high blood pressure and heart disease.”

In the University of Toronto study, Dr. Lucinda Sykes, a Toronto physician, states” sometimes we’re having a stress response to situations that are actually a result of our habits of perception and attitudes rather than the circumstances themselves”.

MRI scans conducted on participant’s months after the study showed the meditation training program can have measurable effects on the brain even when someone is not actively meditating. Ultimately the left frontal lobe of the brain (the area that science measures for happy emotions) became more developed.

The studies recommended that beginner meditation is best practiced in a group setting with an instructor. Experienced participants were then able to conduct solo meditations with regularity.

There you have it: the facts. So why meditate, apart from the obvious physical and emotional benefits? Well, when else do you spend time with you? Not the “you”, who is the mother, father, sister, brother, student, partner or worker; the real you. I believe we are spiritual beings having a human experience and meditation is the vehicle that we drive to meet up with our spirit. The bonus is you also reduce your stress, potential for heart failure and increase your brain happy zone!

Naturopath returns home

“I’m happy to be back in the valley,” Mr. Baker said, adding he enjoys all the biking, hiking and skiing valley residents have in their backyard.

New provincial legislation allows naturopathic doctors to prescribe pharmaceutical drugs, which means naturopathic doctors can work well with medical doctors, said Mr. Baker.

“I know the interactions between pharmaceutical drugs and botanical medicines,” he said.

Naturopathic doctors are also trained as general practitioners in complementary medicine, said Mr. Baker, adding this means he can diagnose, treat and support virtually all diseases.

Some of the naturopathic treatments Mr. Baker does include acupuncture, intravenous therapy (injecting vitamins into the bloodstream), neural therapy (which he said is good for chronic pain and athletic injuries), supplements, botanical medicine and testing for hormones, food allergies and environmental toxins.

Naturopathic doctor Mike Baker has returned to the valley he grew up in and will soon be opening his own practice.

“I always wanted to be in the medical profession — I enjoy helping people and solving problems,” said Mr. Baker.

Mr. Baker said he got into naturopathic medicine, as opposed to traditional medicine or other health professions such as physiotherapy, because he’s drawn to nature and enjoys spending time outside and also because as a naturopathic doctor, he gets to spend a lot of time with patients.

“The first visit to a naturopath is an hour and follow-ups are a half-hour each, so there’s a lot of time to spend with patients,” he said. “That means the patient really gets to tell her or his health story. I really like this approach.”

Naturopathic medicine addresses health needs through many different avenues, said Mr. Baker.

“It’s not just about treating a disease,” he said, adding it’s more about trying to find out why the patient is getting sick in the first place.

Mountainous Mardi Gras arrives at Panorama

By Dan Walton Pioneer Staff Bead necklaces, along with purple, gold, and vibrantly-coloured clothing will help alpine-goers blend in at Panorama Mountain Village this weekend during their 2013 Mardi Gras celebration.

Between Friday, January 17th and Sunday the 19th, the resort will be decorated in a carnival-style, with most of the special activities gravitating around Saturday.

The first bit of festive fun begins on Friday evening, with free tobogganing at the hill between 4:30 p.m. and

8:00 p.m., an activity which normally costs between $4 and $6 per person.

Saturday will be loaded with events. Children are invited to a scavenger hunt at 9 a.m. at the village, where they’ll hunt for beads which can be exchanged for prizes.

The band L8 will be taking the outdoor stage in front of the Great Hall at 11 a.m. and play throughout the afternoon, while a community barbecue and carnival liven up the village.

Pond hockey tournament returns to Lake Windermere

Organizers encourage teams to compete in creative uniforms – kilts, lumberjack attire, and tutus are some of the notable hockey outfits from years past.

“It’s one of the few times that teams get to play outside, and it really brings you back to the days when everybody would just play outside as a kid,” Mr. Reed said. “It’s a totally different experience playing outside.”

In the past two years, around 60 per cent of the registered teams come from outside the Columbia Valley, while the community has given the tournament fantastic reception, he said.

Lake Windermere will soon be loaded with skates, sticks, and players from around B.C. and Alberta as hockey buffs come to the valley to compete in the third annual Pond Hockey tournament in Invermere.

The weekend of outdoor four-onfour hockey begins when players checkin at the Station Pub on Friday, January 31st, and the action will be underway through Saturday and Sunday.

Registration is still open for the tournament. Players will take shifts, as six-man rosters are required, which cost $550 per team to register.

“There’s no limit on capacity, since they can always add more ice,” said tournament director John Reed. The winning team will be awarded with bragging rights, as well as complimentary entry into the 2015 tournament.

The games are fast-paced.

The loose rules call no icing, no offsides, and the nets, while not very tall, go unguarded by goalies. Penalties can be called, which deduct from a team’s score, but there’s no stoppage in play for the 30-minute long match-ups.

Are U.S. stocks too expensive?

2013 was a very good year for the American stock markets. The S&P 500 rallied 30 per cent in 2013; its largest annual gain in 16 years. The Dow Jones Industrial Average posted its biggest gain in 18 years. During 2013, the Canadian dollar also fell more than eight per cent, further adding to gains.

These astronomical returns have some analysts and investors wondering if the U.S. markets are getting too expensive, and if so, what they should do.

Are U.S. stocks expensive?

When trying to determine if something is expensive, it’s important to compare current and historical valuations. In the financial markets, one widely used method is the price-earnings (P/E) ratio. This is a valuation ratio of a company’s current share price compared to its per-share earnings.

For example, if ABC Company is currently trading at $50 per share and its earnings over the last 12 months were $3.25 per share, its P/E ratio would be 15.38.

The average U.S. equity P/E ratio since the 1870s has been about 15. According to the Wall Street Journal, the P/E ratio of the S&P 500 as of January 10, 2014 is 18.95 times earnings. This would suggest that U.S. large-cap stocks are currently overvalued.

Is a crash coming?

Of course anything is possible, but most experts say a crash is highly unlikely. Firstly, long term interest rates should always be considered when analyzing stock valuations. The higher the long term interest rates are, the lower P/E ratios need to be to justify the added risk of purchasing stocks and vice versa. Currently, long term interest rates are still very low and one could argue that slightly higher than normal P/E ratios are easily justified.

Secondly, the U.S. is showing many signs of becoming a healthy economy again. The unemployment rate fell to 6.7 per cent in December, real estate values are rising and manufacturing is expanding. The Conference Board reported that its sentiment index, a measure of consumer confidence, climbed to 78.1 from 72 in November; the strongest year-end reading since 2007.

While the current P/E ratio of the S&P 500 is 18.95, the forward 12-month estimate is only 15.95.

This could suggest that with the U.S. economy on more solid ground, corporate earnings may expand allowing stocks to continue appreciating in price without becoming overvalued. If corporate earnings fail to improve, stocks could experience a modest decline or stagnate for a period of time.

Many analysts agree that while there are no cheap asset classes these days, equities still remain attractive. In fact, equities should outperform bonds for quite a period

of time in a reflationary world as long as bond yields do not shoot higher. Further, according to Credit Suisse, equities only cease to be cheap against bonds if bond yields rise above 3.5 per cent. In today’s low interest rate environment, there is a long way to go before that happens.

What if I missed out?

One of the biggest investing mistakes people make is chasing past returns. While helpful in determining many aspects of an investment’s health, past returns do not guarantee future returns.

People who avoid the equity markets in general because of what happened during the 2008-2009 credit crisis should not worry about missing out. If you’re nervous about stocks, the best thing to do is avoid them. Nervous investing usually leads to selling at the wrong times, which can sometimes cause greater losses than not investing in the first place. Stocks aren’t suitable for everyone.

Those who want to restructure their investment portfolios should focus on suitability and adequate diversification. Regardless of what’s going on in the financial markets, one’s asset allocation should always be based on their financial goals, time horizon and risk tolerance.

Before making any big changes, be sure to discuss them with your financial advisor. He or she can best determine what should be sold, and suitable investments for the resulting cash.

Franziska Helmer April 30, 1927- December 25, 2013

In the early evening of Christmas Day, 2013, while hanging out with family, the loving heart of Franziska Helmer stopped beating. She lived fully independent and contributed to her family and her community, right to the end!

Mom was born on April 30, 1927 in Winkl, Bavaria, Germany, as the seventh of ten children. She worked hard on the family farm and experienced the horrors of the second world war.

She went on to work in a Catholic seniors’ home in Augsburg, Bavaria. In Augsburg she met her future husband, Maximilian Helmer, who she married on March 7, 1955. Joining him in Radium Hot Springs, they built their family and their business.

Our mother was a devout and faithful Roman Catholic disciple: she loved the Lord and his church.

She was a frugal and pragmatic woman who feared no task and left no moment unproductive – napping was never an option, but laughing was always encouraged.

Franziska was predeceased by her husband Maximilian in 2005 and is survived by her four children, Joe, Max, Tony and Louise; her three daughter-in-laws, Seona, Sue and Donna; her fifteen grandchildren, Stefan (Jenny), Maximilian (September), Nicholas, Krysta, Simon, Charles, Alexander, Samantha, Greig, Amanda, Mary, Henry, Lily, Michael and Matthew; her two great-grandchildren Hannah and Abigail; her brother Joseph and several cousins, nieces and nephews in Germany and Australia.

Funeral services were held at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Radium Hot Springs on January 2, 2014, where she was read to by her five granddaughters. Internment followed at the Mountain View Cemetary, where she was carried to her final resting place by her ten grandsons.

Franziska was an amazing woman, mother and oma. We love her and will miss her. Our Dad was the rock of our family and Mom was the mortar.

May songs of angels welcome her and guide her along her way to the home of our Lord; and grant her there to stay!

Cheers to Lana, Sylvia, Wendy and the ICAN people for putting so much grace and goodness into this world and for always being there to help. We love you!

Recipe Of The Week LIME CHILI FISH TACOS

2 pcs Fish (Tilapia, Basa) 4 Flour Tortillas (8”) 3 Radishes, thinly sliced 1/3 cup Red Cabbage, Shredded

¼ cup Sour Cream cup Salsa ¼ cup fresh Cilantro, chopped 1 Lime 1/3

In a skillet cook fish over medium heat until golden.

Flake fish into large pieces, set aside.

In a small skillet over high heat, cook tortillas turning once until lightly toasted.

Place one quarter each of the fish, cabbage and radishes on each tortilla.

Top with sour cream, salsa, cilantro and a squeeze of lime.

Fold in half and enjoy!

Whiteway survey underway On Thursday, January 9th, Focus land surveyors carried out a GPS survey of the Windermere and James Chabot loops of the 31-kilometre Whiteway. The survey was to determine the length and width of the skating area, as to qualify as a skating surface rather than a path, it must be six metres wide in all places. Dirt: our most valuable natural resource The Green File

Soil is a living thing As a gardener I am acutely aware of the impact that my activity has on the soil in my garden. If I plant tomatoes in the same soil two seasons in a row, I invite a host of unwanted disease and pests. If I don’t add compost and sharp sand to the perennial beds every second year the productive cycle of flowering and seed production drops noticeably. I have learned that if I do not “feed the soil,” the plants that grow in it will draw nutrients from it to the detriment of the soil itself.

Soil – or “dirt” – is a colony of living things that are interwoven in their dependence on one another for survival. In truth, the survival of bacteria (a primary work horse in the re-building process of soil) is dependent on the death of the green, living world that it supports.

Leaves and trees fall to the forest floor to provide rich fodder of raw organic material that, as it rots, feeds the bacteria and insect life that converts it into something that plant life can use. Mycorhizae and a host of insects finish the job.

Recently, I enjoyed a car ride with my son that took several hours.

My son Ben attends agricultural college in Ridgetown, Ontario.

Deep in the heartland of the food belt, Ridgetown operates under the Agricultural Department of the University of Guelph.

Conversation moved from one thing to another and landed for a time on the topic of soil. Dirt. Loam.

If you don’t give, you don’t get Ben reflected on the experience one of his classmates is having with his farming family. Making a living “off the land” for several generations, this kid was working on some post-secondary education before he committed himself to work with his father and uncle full-time on the family farm. I asked “So, he would be a useful resource for his dad and uncle, given the new knowledge that he has about current farming practices, then, right?”

“Wrong dad. His dad and uncle know it all (snicker),” said Ben, who went on to explain that the family farmed over 1,000 acres last year and did not make any money in spite of record commodity prices.

“Why?” I asked.

“Because they just keep plowing the same soil and putting the same crops in,” he said. “They don’t use cover crops or rotate their crops as we are taught in our Crop Sciences class.”

There are some people who argue that the most valuable natural resource in Canada is not oil or natural gas or even our fresh water. It is our soil. I agree with this group. Through reading and experience, I

have learned that our willingness to add to and enhance the quality of our soil, to “invest” in it in every way possible, not only makes eminent sense but is a necessity if we plan on farming and gardening sustainably.

Perhaps you will think that there is very little that a gardener can do on a small residential lot or condo balcony to enhance and protect the soil that feeds us.

Maybe so, maybe not.

The truth is, our attitude towards soil and the enduring qualities that it possesses when treated with due respect is an attitude that is rooted firmly at home.

That should be good enough reason to soil-save, if you ask me.

You are my beloved, and in you I am well pleased.

These are the words declared by God when Jesus was baptized. These are the same words declared by God when anyone is baptized. What incredible grace!

We are in the church season of Epiphany, the season of light and enlightenment. Epiphany is about the discovery and re-discovery of God’s great love and the acceptance that only such great love can bring. The season of Epiphany has traditionally used one image in particular – light, as when light reveals what has been hidden in a dark place. Epiphany is a Greek word that literally means “manifestation” or “revelation.” As a verb it means “to show” or “make known.” In our context, what is being revealed and made known is the presence of God. The early church used epiphany to refer to the Incar-

nation — the birth of Jesus — revealing that God is not only “out there” somewhere, but God is also “here” — with us. Epiphany is the shepherds recognizing the newborn Jesus in the manger as the long-awaited Messiah and the Magi acknowledging Jesus as the king of glory.

Later in the Bible, Peter has an epiphany moment when he declares to Jesus, “You are the Christ.” Two disciples who were on the road to Emmaus (after Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection) had an epiphany moment after their dinner guest broke bread and their eyes were opened — recognizing him as the risen Christ.

To make this relevant in our own lives we have to ask, “What’s an epiphany for us? How do we know when we’ve had an epiphany?” An epiphany is: an unexplainable “knowing” that God is in our midst; an experience best described as the light of God radiating in us — both inwardly and outwardly; recognizing the face of Christ in others. Sometimes it comes as an “a-ha” moment, like when a light bulb turns on, but often, epiphanies are recognized in retrospect, as we reflect on some experience and then come to understand that the presence of God was somehow powerfully revealed to us.

You are my beloved, and in you I am well pleased.

Baptized or not, God longs for us to know that we are loved, treasured and never alone. I pray we may all be graced by Epiphany.
