Avalanche claims life of German heli-skier

By Kristian Rasmussen Pioneer Staff An afternoon avalanche claimed the life of a 34-yearold skier and swept up three others in its path during a heli-skiing trip in the Purcell Mountains west of Radium Hot Springs on Monday, February 18th.

Gotz-Thilo Ries of Karlsehie, Germany, was skiing with a group of friends south of Jumbo Mountain when the avalanche struck sometime after 2 p.m. The deluge was classified as a two out of a possible five on the Canadian Avalanche Scale.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and

friends of the deceased,” said Rod Gibbons, operations manager at Invermere’s RK Heliski, who took the skiers on the excursion. “It is an absolute tragedy; there is no other way to describe it.”

The 150 metre-wide avalanche occurred on a backcountry run known as Perogie and swept a path 300 metres down the mountain, enveloping the four German friends skiing together.

Two of the skiers were partially buried, with one suffering minor injuries, while another two were fully buried under an estimated 1.2 metres of snow. All skiers were wearing transceiver beacons and were found within 10 metres of each other, Mr. Gibbons added.

“The rescue went just like clockwork, for whatever that is worth,” he said.

Mr. Gibbons arrived on site, along with four members of the Panorama Mountain Village Ski Patrol, within 12 minutes of receiving the distress call.

Three of the skiers were conscious when found and were dug out by ski patrol members and RK Heliski personnel, who used search transceivers, avalanche probes and snow shovels to help locate and free the men. The fourth man was dug out and found to be unconscious. . . . Continued on page 8

Woman struck and killed by train in Athalmer

By Kristian Rasmussen Pioneer Staff A 50-year-old Invermere woman was killed as a result of being struck by a train while trying to cross the tracks with a friend near 4th Avenue and Borden Street in Athalmer just before 6:50 p.m. on Tuesday, February 20th.

The victim was heading from one friend’s home to another home when she tried to cross the tracks in front of an approaching train, which was estimated to be traveling at close to 60 kilometres per hour. That speed limit is enforced by CPR for trains traveling through residential areas, said Cpl. Grant Simpson of the Columbia Valley RCMP. “The victim was just clipped,” he added. “It appeared as though she thought she had enough room to allow the train to go by, but a portion of the locomotive actually just clipped her.”

before she was able to cross the tracks, did not witness the death of her friend. After the impact, the locomotive came to a stop.

“She had fallen and was kind of face down and didn’t see what happened and couldn’t find her friend,” Cpl. Simpson explained. “The girl who was with the victim ran up to the locomotive and asked, “Did you hit somebody?” because she couldn’t find her friend.”

Members of the Columbia Valley detachment, CPR police and Invermere Fire Rescue attended the scene, but did not begin emergency resuscitation procedures because it was clear that the victim had succumbed to her injuries.

The victim has adult children and a large extended family in the area, Cpl. Simpson said.

“I can imagine the impact [on the community] is going to be fairly significant,” he said. “Hopefully, we can take something from this and treat it as a learning experience and

hopefully the public will realize the dangers involved with trying to cross the tracks.”

The Columbia Valley detachment, CPR police and the BC Coroners Service are currently investigating the accident. Alcohol was believed to be a factor.

“There is an ongoing investigation at this point — just some loose ends to tie up,” said Cpl. Simpson. “As far as we are concerned, it is pretty straightforward.”

The last train-related death in the area claimed the life of respected Invermere doctor Johnson Albert Rose, who was tragically killed while trying to cross over a coupled train stopped near 4th Avenue and Laurier Street in Invermere. The train suddenly lurched forward, knocking Dr. Rose underneath.

“The community must realize the dangers involved in trying to cross any railway track; whether you can see a train or not, there are other inherent dangers as well,” Cpl. Simpson warned.

• On February 18th at 3:45 p.m., the Columbia Valley RCMP detachment was advised of a fatal avalanche accident that occurred east of Jumbo Mountain. Three males were caught in an avalanche described as 150 meters wide, that ran down the mountain approximately 300 metres.

One male was killed in the avalanche.

• On February 16th at 1:53 p.m.

Columbia Valley detachment members attended to a disturbance at a residence in the 2400 block of the Kootenay #3 Road. A 23-year-old female from Penticton was causing damage in the house.

Initial police attendance calmed the situation down.

Detachment members had to return to the residence.

The woman, who was intoxicated, continued to damage property and was arrested for mischief and lodged in cells until sober. She was released with no charges.

• On February 16th, detachment members responded to a possible overdose of a 28-year-old female from Calgary. She advised that she had smoked an item that clearly stated “not for human consumption.” The woman then became sick and began vomiting. The victim refused treatment and was with a friend. The remainder of the item smoked was seized and will be sent to the laboratory to be analyzed.

• On February 15th at 2:18 a.m., Columbia Valley detachment members attended to a two-vehicle accident on Toby Creek Road, two kilometres east of Panorama Drive. A 53-year-old woman driving westbound in a 2006 Nissan lost control while rounding a curve in poor road conditions. She entered the eastbound lane and collided with a 2002 Jeep driven by a 47-year-old male from Invermere. Both vehicles received moderate damage. The driver and passenger of the Nissan were taken to Invermere and District Hospital with minor injuries.

• On February 18th, Columbia Valley detachment members received a complaint from a male who advised that he had lost his bank card. When he checked his bank account, he learned that a withdrawal had been made. Police were provided with a possible suspect and

are continuing the investigation.

Timely reminder Last year, a reporter from Alberta was about to embark on an overnight hike with an individual researching the legend of Bigfoot.

The reporter was to do a story on the man, who in the past went into the backcountry largely unprepared for long stays.

The question put to me by the reporter was, “What is the backcountry like in our area?” He wanted some information before he made his decision.

The unfortunate avalanche death this week reminded me of my conversation with this person.

I told him that the backcountry is a coiled up rattlesnake ready to pounce at any time. The only difference between a coiled up rattlesnake and the backcountry, is that the rattlesnake plays fair and will give you some warning when you are about to make a mistake by sounding off his rattler.

The snake is telling you to back off because you’re too close for his comfort. If you heed that warning you avoid some severe pain or loss of life.

Our back country does not play fair and the only warning or rattling that you hear that your life is at risk is your own knowledge, experience, observations and preparation, should it strike out at you.

A trained person (also stupid) can pick up a rattlesnake without getting bit, but they just need to make one mistake. The same goes for those who go into the backcountry with all the knowledge, experience, powers of observation and preparation.

The backcountry just needs you to make one mistake. In regards to an avalanche, Mother Nature takes control and no mistake is required. The conditions just dictate it’s time to let her go — that’s the backcountry for you.

At the end of my conversation with the reporter I didn’t know what his decision would be. It was clear this fellow did not know much of the backcountry, so I asked him for the names of his next of kin. I give him credit for at least making some inquiries.

That is why I am thankful and appreciate our Search and Rescue volunteers, ski patrol and those experts who assist us with backcountry rescue calls.

Nicholson’s smile remembered

By Kristian Rasmussen Pioneer Staff The Columbia Valley has lost a beacon of goodwill and friendship. John Norman Nicholson, the oldest senior in the province supported by Community Living BC, passed away from pneumonia at the age of 92 on Thursday, January 31st.

“John’s longevity is surely a reflection of his being embraced by his community, the supports he received and his feeling of being included, which are key factors to a good quality of life for all people,” said Jennifer Terwood, the Kootenay Region manager of Community Living BC. John’s life story is a success for the community living concept, in which developmentally delayed adults are encouraged to live and work in the community, rather than staying in relative isolation.

“For the first time we have a larger population of people with developmental disabilities aging in the community, and living longer,” she said.

Budget impacts the valley

Living the dream in the Columbia Valley makes it easy to ignore the fact that our lives can be greatly affected by decisions made in Victoria.

Buried amidst the deluge of news in the valley this week is the unveiling of the latest provincial budget on Tuesday, February 19th.

At least one issue that’s made headlines lately — the slated closure and removal of Invermere’s community dialysis unit — is directly affected by the decisions made within the Legislature building.

Provincial political buffs in the Columbia Valley won’t be surprised to learn that the balanced budget presented on Tuesday required the government to dig deep into services to find the means to balance the ledger.

The budget is a result in part from planned cuts to front-line health care spending, as well as a four per cent increase in Medical Services Plan (MSP) premiums set to start next January.

Last year, the government announced it would make a $234 million cut in health spending for this fiscal year.

Despite a one per cent increase in corporate taxes this April that will bring the provincial rate up to 11 per cent by 2015-2016, the province will bring in more MSP revenues than the total amount paid in corporate taxes.

That’s a very strange situation.

With the aging baby boomer population in the province and across North America — and most definitely here in the valley — there’s no getting around the fact that health costs in B.C. are the biggest slice of the budget pie, and are set to take up a bigger slice each year. Balanced budgets are great, but not if they are built on the backs of patients who need and have come to rely on a strong healthcare system.

I imagine a better solution to provincial budget woes could be dreamed up in less than the time it takes to drive to Cranbrook, receive dialysis treatment, and drive back to Invermere.

Dialysis closure removes local lifeline Dear Editor: I am responding to the recent closure of the dialysis unit at the Invermere and District Hospital.

Cheers to the people who oppose this move; my family has also been affected by this closure. At 84 years of age, my mother was diagnosed with kidney failure and requires dialysis. With the temporary closure of the dialysis unit here last summer, we had to make the trip to Cranbrook for dialysis treatment three times a week. The cost, inconvenience and mental anguish was devastating for my parents.

We were hoping that the closure was temporary and that Interior Health would resolve their staffing issues so the unit could re-open. Clearly that has not been the case; my parents were forced to leave their home in Invermere permanently.

What about the people who have vacation homes here who require special treatment? Has any thought been given to their situation? Clearly they will not be able to enjoy their recreation property.

I am appalled that Interior Health has authorized the removal and relocation of the equipment that our community raised the funds for. The citizens of Invermere and the Women’s Hospital Auxillary work very hard to help fund such equipment. Apparently these efforts are all in vain!

Why should we make the trip to Cranbrook when we already have the unit and equipment in place. Interior Health needs to resolve the staffing issue here and give us back our dialysis unit.

Irked by animal activism Dear Editor: Kudos to Cranbrook council for rejecting the squeaky wheel, the Invermere Deer Protection Society. The recent decision to approve the deer cull is a bitter pill to the sometimes violent and vocal animal rights activists who have been drawn to this issue. The society’s campaign has morphed from wanting to be involved in local discussions two years ago to inviting the animal rights world to bear down on the Kootenays.

The Animal Alliance of Canada staged a protest on the highway in Cranbrook on Sunday, February 17th, waving placards decrying the city’s decision to proceed with a deer cull. Liz White, a fulltime staff member of the Toronto-based group, was front and centre, along with deer protection society president Devin Kazakoff. For all their pontificating and posturing, only five people, two of whom don’t live in Cranbrook, showed up to protest. They have no support.

What galls most people, myself included, is that these activists will not accept that domesticated deer present a clear and present danger to people and pets. My experience as a conservation officer in the Kootenays, until I retired recently, gives me the background to weigh in on the dangers of domesticated deer. I attended numerous interactions between deer, dogs and humans in Kimberley and Cranbrook, and have seen the cuts and bruises left on dog owners who tried to break up a fight between their dog and a deer.

I have witnessed the desperation in the dog owners eyes as they watched the

last bit of life eke out of their pet after a deer stomped it into the ground. I intervened in a deer bearing down on a young girl with her dog on a leash. If I hadn’t driven over the curb and cut the deer off, there would have been serious injuries to the dog and likely to the girl. When you add in the damage to landscapes and gardens, the situation is compounded by the financial loss to homeowners. The deer protection society’s solution is to chase them out of town with dogs or just leave them alone. Deer should not be herded with dogs; it’s like pushing water uphill. Deer will usually bolt right into oncoming traffic resulting in more damage and the deer being killed.

I’ve chased many cougars and bears out of schoolyards and back alleys of towns in the Kootenays. If you don’t like the cull, hunting, trapping, resource extraction and all other things that are not on your ethical list, move from the Kootenays and find like-minded people who protest the things that make your life better.

If you choose to stay in the Kootenays and want to live in harmony with nature, that’s quite all right, but don’t force your ideology on the rest of us.

To the protestors, petitioners and dozen or so members of the deer protection society, get over it, move on and try to do something productive for the community beyond waving signs and stomping your feet. That only makes you a far greater nuisance than the deer.

Resuscitation efforts undertaken on the scene, in the rescue helicopter and at Invermere and District Hospital proved to be unsuccessful.

“We initiated CPR and put the AED [automated external defibrillator] on him and loaded him directly into the helicopter, and they flew directly to the hospital; the hospital worked on him for 45 minutes,” Mr. Gibbons added.

Movie Review: Fun Size Reviewed by Dan Walton When I saw that this movie was directed by Josh Schwartz, I had a tough prejudice to overcome; this is the guy who directed the OC and Gossip Girl.

But it wasn’t long before I found myself enjoying Fun Size. It was similar to Superbad, except Fun Size focuses on two girls rather than two boys. And Nickelodeon made it, so the adults themes were much more mild.

The movie opens by introducing Wren, a high school senior with good values. She feels as though her family is weirder than most families, which is exemplified by her widowed mom who’s dating a boy toy, and her eight year-old brother, Albert, who acts like a free spirit.

The movie spans the course of one day — Halloween.

Wren gets stuck babysitting her little brother who she’s now responsible for chaperoning during trick or treating.

After taking her brother out, Wren and her friend have plans on going to a big party.

But when trick or treating goes awry and Albert accepts free candy and a car ride from a convenient store clerk he just met named Fuzzy, Wren and her friends put off their party plans to search for Albert.

Luckily, Albert was in good hands with his Fuzzy - the convenience store clerk just wanted a partner in crime for a toilet paper prank.

After toilet papering Fuzzy’s ex girlfriend, Albert has a wild time at a night club before pulling a prank on a white trash guy with a mullet (played by John-

ny Noxville). After angering the man with a stunt involving human feces, Albert is abducted by him and held ransom.

All the while Wren spends her night drooling over a popular boy. She has to learn a few lessons before she can appreciate the nice guy she’s just friends with, who’s had a crush on her all along.

Realizing she could easily date the more popular guy, Wren accepts the compromise she made with an analogy between her Wizard of Oz costume and her new relationship: “Perfect is an illusion, just like Oz is for Dorothy.”

The movie doesn’t shout originality, but it is a comical way to turn down your brain and think like an MTV fan for 90 minutes.

How much do advisors cost?

There is a lot of talk in the media these days about the cost of financial advice. Some people believe that it costs more to deal with one financial advisor than another. While this can be true in some cases, the cost of dealing with financial advisors often has much more to do with the account types and product choices used than your individual financial advisor.

Investment Fees There are two main types of investments that a financial advisor will use: mutual funds and individual securities.

Many clients mistakenly believe that mutual funds are free because they do not have to pay fees directly out of pocket. In fact, mutual funds charge annual fees, which are paid as a flat percentage of assets in the fund, usually around one to 2.5 per cent, regardless of performance or market conditions. This is true of every mutual fund at every firm in Canada.

Securities that trade on the stock or bond markets have fees associated with buying and selling that are paid directly from the client’s investment account to the advisor’s firm.

In all cases, the fees paid on investments do not go entirely to the advisor. Fees go towards covering the trading, legal, compliance and other costs borne by the advisor’s firm and/or the mutual fund company, as well as compensating the advisor for reviewing and servicing the client’s account.

Account Fees There are two main types of accounts: regular and fee-based. Fee-based accounts are those in which an investor pays a flat fee as a percentage of the assets in their account, usually between 0.5 and 2 per cent.

The investor then receives a certain number of free stock or bond trades per year. Because the advisor and their firm are being compensated annually on all the assets, people with fee-based accounts may buy F-class mutual funds, which have a reduced management fee.

Fee-based accounts are a relatively new concept in Canada. While they make sense for people who do a lot of trading, they can be very expensive for conservative, buyand-hold investors.

By comparison, regular accounts do not charge a flat fee on assets. Instead, people pay a fee only when they trade a stock or bond. If an investor buys mutual funds, regular fund fees apply.

Advisor Fees There are several ways a financial advisor may get paid, including salary, commission, direct fees or a combination of these types of payments. These methods vary depending on where the advisor works and the kind of product they use.

To decide which type of advisor is most suitable, a person should start by considering the type of investments they want to use. If a person wants to buy only mutual

funds, they can do so through almost any type of financial advisor. Portfolios containing mutual funds alone are best suited to people with modest amounts of money or limited investment knowledge.

Those who want to use sophisticated investments such as stocks or bonds as well as mutual funds must deal with a licensed investment advisor. This is an important distinction in the financial services industry, as investment advisors are subject to higher levels of education, regulation and compliance than mutual fund salespeople.

Final thoughts While the ways that people pay fees on investments might vary, there is little distinction between the amounts of fees paid, regardless of which kind of advisor is used.

Furthermore, it’s important to keep in mind that no matter the type of advisor, investment management and advice are not free. Even when the client does not pay a fee directly, the cost of the product they buy will include the cost of commission paid to their advisor or a contribution to their salary, or both.

Probably a far more important factor when choosing a financial advisor is service rather than fees. It’s of the utmost importance that people deal with someone they like and trust, who is open to discussion about fees and gives professional, consistent service. After all, a person’s relationship with their financial advisor is often one of the most important professional relationships they will have.

Chamber champions business benefits

By Greg Amos Pioneer Staff Monday, February 18th marks the beginning of this year’s Chamber of Commerce Week in B.C., an event meant to bring awareness to the important work these organizations do to stimulate local economies, promote their communities, and engage in multi-level advocacy to the benefit of the entire province.

It means something for the Upper Columbia Valley as well. By tapping into the connections enabled by Chambers of Commerce in B.C. and across the country, local businesses can be a part of the most prestigious and influential business organization in Canada.

Whether running a small business alone, or employing dozens of workers in an emerging enterprise, the small and medium sized businesses of the Columbia Valley can enjoy the networking opportunities enabled by being a Chamber member. The valley currently has 802 businesses between Spillamacheen and Canal Flats, of

which 280 are Chamber members.

“A chamber is the voice of business in the community and the stronger our numbers, the stronger our voice,” explained the Columbia Valley chamber’s executive director, Susan Clovechok. “The more members that get involved and participate, whether it is on a task force, committee or as a director on our board, the better we are able to represent business. When we approach a government representing over 35 per cent of businesses throughout the community, we have a better chance of being heard than one lone business.”

With its recently released report, the Top 10 Barriers to Competitiveness for 2013, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce has identified the main factors which are holding back Canada’s economic progress and ability to compete globally.

In the valley over the past week, the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce has been looking for local answers to work force questions. On Tuesday, February 19th, the Chamber hosted a roundtable discussion to

generate ideas on how to tackle this regional issue, and came up with new avenues to address the skills shortages some businesses are facing.

Mrs. Clovechok sits on the Kootenay Workforce Roundtable, which represents the Columbia Valley and chamber members, and is now developing a regional Workforce Training Plan.

But it’s not all about getting down to business — the Columbia Valley chamber is a strong believer in mixing business with pleasure through socials held throughout the year. On Thursday, February 21st, the Chamber held a mixer at Arrowhead Brewing, a local craft beer producer that’s emerged as a recent business success story in the valley.

Chambers of Commerce in B.C. support businesses through benefit programs, services and education. Being community-based means that Chambers are funded entirely by their members, events and sponsorship.

Seminar to help businesses avoid looking foolish on PST

By Kristian Rasmussen Pioneer Staff While the day may be heralded for goofy tricks and laughs at others’ expenses, the return of the provincial sales tax (PST) scheduled for April 1st is no joke.

The Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the provincial government, has organized a seminar aimed at helping individuals and businesses re-adjust to the exit of the Harmonized Sales Tax and the re-introduction of the PST at the Lions Hall on Thursday, February 28th.

“It is just about getting people’s attention back to the PST, that it is coming back April 1st, and there is a definite tax change,” said David Longman, project director of PST re-implementation. “We want to give them some highlights about the tax change and make sure that they are aware that if they sell taxable goods or services they have to register again for the tax because their old registration will not apply.”

The Columbia Valley seminar is one of close to 100 that the provincial government has organized to ease individuals and businesses into the re-introduction of the PST before Monday, April 1st. The

seminars are designed mainly to target small to medium businesses because after the PST left the province three years prior, more than 30,000 new businesses have sprung up, Mr. Longman added.

“Many of these businesses don’t have a history in PST at all and people have also forgotten how the PST applied. We want to make sure that individuals know the basics and know where they can get information.”

The seminar is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lions Hall. For more information on the PST, please visit www.gov.bc.ca/pst .

Remembering a local visionary Dear Editor: Chinese New Year 2013 has come and gone, and with it, the opportunity to once again raise awareness and funds to support the women’s shelter in the Columbia Valley.

Debbie Neault had a vision, to build a women’s shelter so that the women in the Columbia Valley would not have to leave their friends and family when fleeing domestic violence. Chinese New Year became her way to have a good time while raising both awareness and funds to that end. And raise funds she did to the amount of $73,000 before she became ill. Debbie started the Columbia Valley Family Violence Prevention Society (CVFVPS) to gain charitable status and to increase the awareness of how domestic violence affects the commu-

nity as a whole. Even before Debbie became ill, it was apparent that more than a building was necessary. The shelter would need money to maintain a staff and programs to help women in the shelter.

It was at this time that we began to negotiate with the Family Resource Centre (FRC) as they were (and still are) providing safe homes and women’s programming.

Before Debbie died,the CVFVPS and the FRC came to an agreement.

In 2011 and 2012, the Family Resource Centre carried on the Chinese New Year event, but no one could replace Deb’s energy and ability to network in this community, and these events fell short of the previous years.

This year, we were faced with finding a new venue and a new way to have a good time and raise both awareness and funds.

Have you seen the ads with the B.C. Lions football team player telling us that domestic violence is not just a women’s issue but a community issue? This led me to cheer, though I don’t watch much football.

I felt this new understanding is a great breakthrough for all of us and that men should be included in the Chinese New Year event to again raise awareness and funds to help us put an end to domestic violence in the Columbia Valley. I had hoped that these changes would be seen as a necessary change to help us fulfill Debbie’s vision of a women’s shelter in the Columbia Valley. I cannot think of a more honourable or respectful way to remember my good friend Debbie Neault.

Smart meters impact ‘like adding a kazoo to a brass band’ Dear Editor: I am not sure why people are so upset about smart meters. It seems as though every time there is a new piece of technology introduced, the Luddites come out of the woodwork telling us that our rights are being infringed upon or that we are going to suffer from some kind of medical ailment from its implementation. Yet hundreds of years later, we are still here.

First of all, there is no law I know of that says you have to get your power from BC Hydro. I know of dozens of people in this area who choose to live

off the grid and either generate their own power or go without. If you don’t want a smart meter, there is your choice.

Second, smart meters pose no verifiable health risks. Smart meters produce low levels (less than one watt) of non-ionizing radiation a few times a day. Even if it were a thousand times a day for one second at a time, it is still transmitting only 1 per cent of the time.

Third, non-ionizing radiation has been with us before recorded history.

The atmospheric process generates non-ionizing radiation through the thousands of lightning strikes every second — you can hear it on your radio

as static. The sun sends down roughly 1,000 watts of non-ionizing radiation per square meter to the Earth’s surface.

Finally, there are the many manmade sources of non-ionizing radiation we have lived with for over a century now: radio towers emitting up to 50,000 watts (The CKIR 870 tower is in a field next to Peter’s Hill and uses 5,000 watts), microwaves in our homes in the five watt range, plus numerous amateur radios, infrared heaters, and even flashlights! A smart meter, wi-fi network, or cell phone is the equivalent of adding a kazoo to a brass band!

On alcohol and authors Editor’s note: this is the second of a two-part series that began on February 8th.

author of Crime and Punishment and other great tomes, drew from many influences but surprisingly, alcohol was hardly among them. Again, poor old Fyodor was not completely unfamiliar with the occasional sip of brandy but his talent did not suffer from overindulgence in any form.

He did spend time in a Siberian penal colony but it was for “the political crime of reading out a radical letter”, certainly not for a charge of driving under the influence or public drunkenness.

Despite having been constantly beaten by his mother as a child, Ivan Turgenev appears to have avoided alcohol completely. The only addictions I could uncover on this legend were to a certain lady of the opera and a lifelong, profound sympathy for his fellow man.

Clearly, my attempt to correlate alcohol abuse and its woeful impact on writers has failed to hold up here at all, in 19th century Russia, as it did when I surveyed the American literary scene in round one of this campaign. Surely there must be at least one universally respected Russian great whose life’s work was compromised by the bottle.

Enter Lolita author Vladimir Nabokov.

He didn’t produce his work in the 19th century, mind you, but he surely qualifies as a Russian literary legend.

I sharpened my pencil, poured myself another gin-ricky and — once again, no dice. His passion for writing was only disrupted by travelling around the world to collect rare butterflies.

Due to the fact that I possess very little formal education, I tend to rely heavily on clichés, stereotypes and generalities. Like most reasonably dumb people, I have a personalized vision of the world and as such, expect everyone else to get in line and behave accordingly.

So when I set my sights on the theme of alcohol and the Russian writer, I automatically assumed that those brooding masters of pessimism would provide a staggering amount of material. Alas, after arming myself with a volume on 19th century Russian novelists, a No. 2 pencil and a tall gin-ricky, I quickly discovered that our literary comrades were in fact, mostly sober.

Leo Tolstoy, for one, evidently did sip from the flask on the occasional cold morning, whilst waiting for the train. As a young man, he was a notorious womanizer and for years owed gambling debts heavier than Luciano Pavarotti after a five-hour lunch. But as time went on and his talent grew stronger, Tolstoy sobered up and settled down. He eventually joined the army (to escape said debts), got married (for forty-eight years) and fathered thirteen children. Thirteen. Maybe he didn’t have the time to drink.

Elizabeth Paauw (1923-2013)

Elizabeth Paauw passed away suddenly at the Brentwood Care Center on February 5, 2013 at the age of 89. Elizabeth was born in North Holland, but immigrated to Canada in 1952 and was a long-time resident of Radium Hot Springs, B.C., where she and husband, John, built and operated theArrow Motel. They retired in 1979 and moved to Calgary in 1995.

Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband John Paauw in 2002, son-in-law Bruno Marti, and by her parents and 4 siblings of Spierdijk, North Holland. She is survived by 5 children: Teresa (Denver) DeWitt of Beaverlodge, AB, George Paauw of Sugar Land, Texas, Veronica Paauw of Kimberley, B.C., Michael Paauw of Calgary, AB, and Juliana Paauw (Bruce Minty) of Gatineau, Quebec, and 6 grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews in Holland.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Recipe Of The Week SUPER CHOCOLATE CAKE

1 cup Sugar 3 tablespoons Butter, softened 1 Egg, beaten ½ cup Cocoa and boiling water to make 1 cup liquid

½ teaspoon Baking Soda ½ cup boiling Water 1 cup Flour 1 teaspoon Baking Powder

Cream together sugar and butter; add egg and cocoa liquid.

Mix soda and boiling water.

Add this, flour and baking powder and mix well.

Pour into a greased 9” square pan (the batter will be thin).

Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean.

You can double this recipe and bake in a 9 x 13” pan or Bundt pan for 40 to 50 minutes.

Six cell towers slated for national park

Preparing for a new beginning

By Laura Hermakin Reverend, Christ Church Trinity It’s the beginning of Lent, which traditionally is a time of preparation for baptism. At Easter, we rejoice in new life that is beginning or revitalizing.

Baptism is extremely important because it’s when our service to God begins, and things can take place beyond our sight.

In baptism, you’re adopted by God as God’s child and you become an inheritor of the kingdom of heaven. You’re named and titled; you become Christian, a child of God. You’re also made a priest of God, as you’re charged with spreading the good news of God’s love to everyone, living your life in accordance with the example of Jesus, and becoming a beacon of light in the darkness of the world. And you join Christ in his death: not a physical one, but a spiritual death. After your spiritual death, you’re resurrected as a new person.

We are called to serve the needs of our communities — to help the poor, heal the sick, and comfort the griev-

ing. Baptism is not the be-all, end-all of Christianity; it’s only the first step. It’s our responsibility to learn from Jesus — it’s our responsibility to create a strong relationship with Christ.

If you are baptized as an adult, the full responsibilities to learn and grow are yours, but if baptized as an infant or child, the responsibilities lie with all who stood witness as everybody who witnesses also shares in that responsibility and accountability.

Attending weekly worship is important for Christians because it allows us to refresh our souls, bask in God’s love, and hear God’s word. Praying regularly is important, as this is the cornerstone of our relationship with Christ. It is communication, and communication is the foundation on which all relationships are built.

As Christians grow, so does our ability to converse with God. Jesus knows from firsthand experience how difficult life can be and we don’t need to explain to him how it feels when we are challenged, allowing us more time talking about our specific challenges and how to overcome them.

As we embark upon another Lenten journey, let’s take on the example of Christ, face temptations, and focus our eyes on the promise of what is to come. To prepare our hearts, minds, and bodies for the promise of the resurrection, let’s use the gifts that he has given us to support one another, our churches, and our communities!

“John finally had his own bedroom,” Ms. Jefferson added. “His walls were adorned with wolf pictures and keepsakes that he collected over the years. He spent hours in his room doodling and cutting out papers and Allan and him would sit side-by-side watching sports or the news together.”

With a new home and support from dedicated staff came new adventures and opportunities. John developed a love for sports and was talented at bowling, Ms. Jefferson said.

“He would often walk to the baseball diamonds or watch the local hockey games,” she said. “John bowled right up to his 90s; he had an incredibly strong throw

February 22, 2013 and always had a consistent score.”

Although he loved recreation, John was also instilled with a strong work ethic and sense of community pride. The local man worked at the Achievement Centre in Athalmer, where he assisted at the greenhouse and used his creative skills to participate in woodworking projects. During the mid 1980s, John took on more responsibility by accepting a position as a courier, delivering documents for the Invermere & District Hospital.

“He took great pride in this position,” Ms. Jefferson stated. “The ladies in the hospital office always made a fuss over John, buying him chocolates for each birthday. Just recently, they shared with me that John reminded them weeks ahead that his birthday was fast approaching.”

Always a ladies’ man, the Invermere local was known for his chivalrous attitude.

“He was such a gentleman; every time we went out he was out there holding the door for all the gals,”

she said.

John was also keen to cultivate spiritually. He was proud of his Christian faith and would rarely miss Sunday service at Valley Christian Assembly.

“He loved the music and the church people,” said Ms. Jefferson. “He was a member of their family and they always treated him very kindly and he embraced them.”

A memorial service was held for John at Valley Christian Assembly on Saturday, February 4th. He is survived by his brother Allan, who continues to keep his legacy of warmth and positivity alive.

“It was the most intimate little service with about 40 people and nobody wanted to get up and talk, but all of a sudden this little group of people started talking,” she added. “There were 15 people at the end of the service who mentioned some little thing they remembered about Johnny. His smile was brought up in every conversation to remember the kind of wonderful person that he was.”

The Hitch had a soft spot for Johnny Walker Black Label scotch whiskey, strong cigarettes and fierce arguments. His peers often wondered how he

could debate long into the night and write so prolifically after several tumblers of the gold.

I hold no answer to that query, but I do know he loved the way that the light shone when burning the candle from both ends. On alcohol and authors, Mr. Hitchens is one great man who should not be forgotten.
