Two charged with arson after Fairmont blaze

By Greg Amos Pioneer Staff Two young adults from the Columbia Valley have been arrested and could soon be charged with arson relating to a fire that destroyed five uninhabited buildings in Columbia Eagle condominium block in Fairmont Hot Springs on Cpl. Grant Simpson December 22nd.

After what Columbia Valley RCMP Corporal Grant Simpson called a “very complex investigation”, police were able to identify two suspects: a 20-year-old woman from Fairmont and a 25-year-old man from Invermere.

Crown Counsel in Cranbrook will now consider

whether arson charges can be laid against the pair to bring the case to court. Under the Canadian Criminal Code, arson is a hybrid offence that can result in a prison term of up to 14 years if the case is treated as an indictable offence.

The pre-Christmas fire swept through five buildings that had lain empty and exposed to the elements since being built to the lock-up stage (about 50 per cent complete) several years ago.

The homes had frames and walls in place at the time, but only concrete foundations and rebar remained after the intense fire, which was described by Windermere and Fairmont fire chief Jim Miller as producing an “absolutely unbelievable” amount of heat.

The structural fire incinerated virtually all evidence at the site, making the police investigation a difficult task that relied on witnesses and following complex procedures to secure information, Cpl. Simpson explained.

The investigation determined that the owners had no insurance on the properties.

The homes did not have any electricity, water or sewer services connected, and were behind a locked fence at the time of the blaze, which started at around 10:30 a.m.

Due to the lack of a natural source for a spark to ignite the fire, police and firefighters immediately suspected arson. Three buildings of the five were completely engulfed in flames by the time RCMP arrived.

Police identified a strong suspect within days of the fire, and announced the recommended charges late on January 17th, after speaking to both suspects at the RCMP detachment in Invermere earlier that same evening. Neither suspect is described as being known to police, meaning they are likely without criminal records.

Police estimate the value of property loss as a result of the arson attack to be between $1.5 million and $2 million dollars.

Interior Health pulls community dialysis unit

By Greg Amos,Pioneer Staff The planned removal of a recently-renovated blood hemodialysis unit from the Invermere and District Hospital is prompting an uproar that many community members hope will be enough to make Interior Health reconsider the change.

While the District of Invermere passed a motion on Tuesday, January 22nd to send a strongly-worded letter of opposition to the plan, some of the strongest criticism is coming from an Interior Health employee — environmental health inspector Kirt Sellers, an Invermere resident who must now travel three times each week to Cranbrook to receive hemodialysis.

“It’s been a long-time established service here, and

the nature of the program isn’t always sustainable,” said Mr. Sellers. “But it’s in place, the unit is fully set up and ready to go, and the nurse that provided the service is in place. I feel that the whole program has never been properly managed; it’s been inadequately resourced.”

The dialysis unit has been in Invermere for about 12 years, serving those with kidney health issues the throughout the Upper Columbia Valley, including the Golden area. But a lack of patients combined with staffing challenges make it unsustainable to keep open, said Interior Health regional director of renal services Paula James.

“The challenge has been that Invermere is the only unit of its kind in B.C. that was operating with a single renal nurse, which created issues related to

covering any sick or vacation leaves and providing for ongoing peer support,” she wrote in a Friday, January 11th memo, which announced the closure just before the unit was set to be re-opened on Monday following a temporary closure that began last August.

That left the community feeling “broadsided” by the news, said Invermere Mayor Gerry Taft.

“When you have a situation where the equipment is already in the community, the staffing’s there, and there’s the ability to train additional staff to have coverage in the case of sickness or leave . . this is a service that could be and should be provided,” he said.

• On January 19th, the Columbia Valley detachment received a report of a damaged door at the Credit Union on 7th Avenue. The area involved has video. The male pulled the hinges off the sliding door. A video is being reviewed. Turn yourself in, we go restorative. If we have to find you, we go to court. The offer is good for one week.

• On January 19th, during patrols in the town area, a grey sport utility vehicle was located driving in an erratic manner on 7th Avenue. A check of the vehicle determined that the 31-year-old male driver from Calgary had been drinking and displayed signs of being impaired. An ASD demand was read and the male blew a fail. The 2012 Chevrolet vehicle was impounded for 30 days and his licence was suspended for 90 days.

• On January 19th at 1:20 a.m., the Columbia Valley RCMP detachment received a report of a missing boyfriend who was at a stag party and was overdue by a couple of hours. Police invited themselves to the stag and located the male sleeping — alone.

• On January 19th, at 11:30 p.m., the Columbia Valley detachment members responded to a single vehicle accident on 3rd Avenue. The driver had struck a stop sign.

The 23-year-old male driver of the 1994 Jeep displayed signs of being impaired. A breath demand was given and the driver was taken in for a breath test at the detachment.

The driver was charged with impaired driving and driving with a blood alcohol level over .08. The male will appear in Invermere Provincial court February 12th.

• On January 20th, the Columbia Valley detachment members observed a 2007 Dodge pick up truck driving on 13th Street at a high rate of speed. The vehicle was eventually stopped near the hockey arena. The driver admitted to consuming liquor and displayed signs of impairment.

An ASD demand was read and the 31-year-old male from Invermere blew a fail. The vehicle was impounded for 30 days and his licence was suspended for 90 days.

• On January 21st at 1 a.m., the Columbia Valley detachment responded to a complaint of a possible domestic assault in the 3000 block of Highway 93/95. Police attended and spoke to both parties involved. No assault complaint was made in this instance, nor was there evidence to show police that any assault took place other than a heated argument. Police appreciated the call from concerned parties.

• On January 21st, the Columbia Valley Detachment received a complaint of a damaged fence in the 8000 block of Dunn Street in Canal Flats. A portion of the fence was damaged. A Chevrolet emblem was located on the ground.

Setting the record straight If I see a jeers to the RCMP that is specific to an incident that I should clarify with the community, I will do my best to address it. Others, I can read into and can easily conclude that person has another agenda or motivation and responding would make no difference. So, let’s clarify the jeers to the RCMP for having a coffee and hitting one of the sheep.

The article written clearly identifies it was me, offduty and in my private vehicle, who hit the sheep that ran out in front of my truck. Second, I mentioned to the officer who attended “I wish I had stopped at Tim Horton’s for coffee, then the timing of us meeting on the road for the collision would have been thrown off.”

Even when we complete the report, we can be wrong. Jeers to the RCMP for that. I was not sipping on a coffee. Thirdly, the sheep got up pretty fast and beelined for the woods. To my relief, thinking he will brush it off and survive. A person passing by and I had a brief look at night and did not locate it. That same person did another search and later found it dead.

Cheers for my helper who took a second look. Jeers to the person who heard of the accident, got to the sheep first and cut the head off for a trophy. Having worked in a small community for most of my service, I live with the fact, and am very proud, that I am an RCMP officer and I conduct myself as such on and off duty.

I also expect the community I serve to view me in that light and hold me accountable for my actions on or off duty. It’s living in a fish bowl, and it’s a choice I’ve made. I also accept and live with the fact that many people, such as the persons who have expressed their opinion of their interpretation of my actions off duty, see an opportunity to ensure that they identify and take the opportunity to criticize the RCMP for the actions of an individual. My thought process, however, is if I have an issue with how a mechanic completed work on my car, I don’t paint all mechanics with the same brush.

That’s just me. Teresa, regarding the previous jeers about a police car rolling through a stop sign, that wasn’t me. I fixed the problem with that car.

Invermere daycare cashes in coins

By Kristian Rasmussen Pioneer Staff Penny pinchers across the valley will soon see the production of their coveted coin cut when the Royal Canadian Mint phases out production of the penny on Monday, February 4th, but an Invermere daycare plans to cash in on the curtailed coin for a good cause.

Sonshine Children’s Centre has strategically placed penny donation buckets throughout the Invermere area to raise money for a new playground. Community members are encouraged to donate their spare cents to the construction of a Blue Imp play structure, which will feature climbing equipment, a slide and several options for future additions. The total cost of the project is $35,000, with $22,000 allocated for the equipment itself and an additional $13,000 for construction costs.

“This particular structure is set into the ground so that it is lower and it’s totally geared for children from two to five years old,” said Cherie Hagen, director of the Sonshine Children’s Centre. “We just want something durable, long-lasting and challenging to the children in

their growth and development, physically.”

The daycare, which has raised over $6,300 through various fundraisers thus far, hope to have the 35 per cent down payment for the structure in place before the end of the summer.

“I feel that there is such a high need in the community,” she added. “I think this is something very beneficial to support.”

The valley business world will also find the penny playing a role in their future. The phasing out of the coin will likely cause some initial confusion, but nothing businesses will not be able to overcome, said Alita Bentley of the Invermere Business Committee.

“I think this will cause a little bit of extra work for retailers to find out if they are still going to accept pennies, or if they are going to round up or down in their systems,” she said. “Overall, cash out is going to be a lot simpler and I think its a good move.”

Snow Golf set for Kinsmen Bay

By Kristian Rasmussen Pioneer Staff A blizzard of activity is ready to blow its way onto Kinsmen Bay on Saturday, February 2nd. Putters looking to profit at the 12th annual Snow Golf will have a host of challenges, including snow drifts, changing weather and an unpredictable playing surface to battle for a host of prizes provided by local retailers.

“As far as I am concerned, this is the best day of golf of the year,” said Steve Kuffler, event organizer.

“It’s hooting and hollering all day long out there and everybody has a blast.”

The event, which is a fundraiser for the Kinsmen Club of Windermere Valley, hosted 21 teams of four golfers last year and raised over $3,000 for the community’s greatest needs. The event has always garnered a loyal following of players, ranging from gurus to greenhorns, who flock to the unpredictable fun the event always seems to produce, Mr. Kuffler added.

The course runs over 18 holes, which range from 80 to 290 yards. Many golfers bring their entire set of clubs to play the course, due to the wide range of terrain and distances, Mr. Kuffler said. Although the competition can be challenging, talent does not guarantee results on the unconventional course.

“We have had teams out there with four different pros from four different golf courses,” he said. “Everybody thinks that they would have the advantage because they are pro golfers — it is not the case.”

A set of coloured golf balls and an appreciation for a good time are the only real requirements to compete at Snow Golf, he added.

Tickets to the event, which are nearly sold out, are $35 per player and can still be purchased at The Station Pub. Registration for the event begins at 11 a.m. at the pub with a shotgun start scheduled for 12 p.m.

Campaign spin ratchets up

It’s amazing how much political hay can be made out of two unrelated events: the pending closure of Invermere’s community dialysis unit, and a Calgary fundraising dinner for an aspiring provincial politician representing the Columbia Valley.

When the news broke that the dialysis clinic was set to be shuttered, NDP Columbia River - Revelstoke MLA Norm MacDonald wasted little time in sending out a press release lambasting the provincial government for spending $15 million on taxpayer-funded partisan advertising. The implication is that the BC Liberal government money could have been better spent on healthcare. Just one problem: the decision was made by management within Interior Health, far below the provincial level. Chalk that one up as a swing and a miss on the attempted political slam.

Then on January 16th, The Globe and Mail published a critical article about local BC Liberal candidate Doug Clovechok’s Calgary fundraising event, in which he, along with cabinet ministers Bill Bennett and Rich Coleman, was seeking money from Albertans in order to build a campaign to represent constituents in B.C. This newspaper received an explanatory letter (look right) the next day, amid criticism from the political observers in B.C. It was either a smart fundraising move, or as the acting head of UBC’s Political Science department told me, a risky move that raises the spectre of a politician being beholden to out-of-province interests.

That, or it’s just B.C. politics as usual.

Albertans also want a valley voice Dear Editor: Some of our neighbors who pay taxes in our constituency, spend money in local businesses, contributing to the overall success of our economy won’t be able to vote in the May provincial election. They want to have a voice in Victoria.

That’s why BC Liberal candidate Doug Clovechok finds it gratifying that not only permanent B.C. constituents feel he is that voice, but is pleased that many residents who are “dual citizens” feel the same way.

Recently Doug was invited to a fundraiser in Calgary supported by people who spend a lot of time

Auditor general is effective Dear Editor: The public depends on institutional watchdogs to keep government accountable. Offices like the Ombudsperson or Auditor General are critical to ensuring the government behaves in the public interest regardless of the political cost.

When government actively weakens or undermines these institutional checks and balances, you can be sure that the public interest is being compromised.

One of the biggest provincial news stories of 2013 has been the removal, by the BC Liberals, of the current Auditor General. Instead of choosing to have John Doyle stay on as Auditor General, the government has taken this opportunity to get rid of him.

John Doyle has provided very effective and determined oversight of government. And in the course of doing his job, John Doyle has exposed a record of incompetence and deceit.

But instead of addressing the shortfalls that have been pointed out through Auditor General reports, the BC Liberals first tried to discredit John Doyle. And now they’ve taken the final step: they’ve gotten rid of him.

If you believe that firing an effective critic of government is the wrong thing to do, I would encourage you to send a message to Premier Christy Clark at premier@gov.bc.ca .

Act respects local government Dear Editor: Toba Beta said that “misinformation is tricking” and judging from Norm Macdonald’s MLA Report regarding the province’s 2003 Significant Projects Streamlining Act (SPSA), it would seem that he was trying his best to do some constituent tricking. His claim: your government had removed the ability for local governments to be participants in local decision making by passing Acts like the SPSA. Frankly, this is a lie!

The Significant Projects Streamlining Act was passed to remove unnecessary and costly delays from the review process for projects deemed to be of significant provincial importance — delays created by the NDP in the 1990s. Under the NDP, B.C. had garnered a reputation as having one of the most difficult and lengthy approval processes for major projects in North America.

In order to compete successfully with other jurisdictions the government had to improve review processes for significant projects.

The Act provided a clear signal

to potential investors that B.C. had a framework to ensure projects were dealt with in a timely, responsible and disciplined way.

The Act allowed cabinet to assign special status to a project deemed to be important to the economic, social or environmental wellbeing of B.C. That said, the Act has never been used.

The SPSA was designed to respect the autonomy of local government with a provincial government’s commitment to cut red tape and revitalize an economy that had been ravaged by the NDP. Then-Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum, then-Mayor of Prince George Colin Kinsley and president and CEO of the Business Council of British Columbia, Jerry Lambert, all supported the SPSA. All three felt that the Act enabled governments to work together while being held accountable for delivering decisions in a timely manner.

Shaking the family tree

By Pioneer Staff If you have ever thought about delving into your family history, a new website offered through the Invermere Public Library could be a great place to start.

The library now has a version of www.ancestry.com available for use in the library. On Wednesday, January 30th, at 6 p.m., library staff are hosting an entertaining and informative talk about how to get started.

The library also features a few new titles on the subject of ancestry. Beyond Belfast is author Will Ferguson’s story of his two-month hike along the Ulster Way in Northern Ireland.

“I was on one of those ill-advised ancestral homeland treks of which we North Americans are so inexplicably fond,” he explained. “My grandfather was a Belfast orphan, you see, and I thought that somehow I could reconnect with my past by walking through muddy fields for two months on feet so blistered they had come to resemble bubble-wrap”.

Another new title is Shaking the

Family Tree by Buzzy Jackson, which tells a story of a woman’s search to find out if her family stories were true. As an historian and a skilled storyteller, she makes her genealogical quest a delightful read, said Ginny Walker from the Invermere Public Library.

Genealogy makes history come alive, she discovered during her own research on her roots.

“I knew that my grandfather was born in Belfast and that he never wanted to go back,” said Mrs. Walker. “I never thought to ask him why when he was alive, but a decade later it was all that I could think about.”

“I found myself reading everything that I could get my hands on about Northern Ireland, fiction and non,” she said. “We discovered and were able to meet distant relatives of my grandfather. We visited the graves of his father, mother, and brother in Belfast. We were taken to the boy’s home where he spent four years. And we met the most amazing people.”

Movie Review: End of Watch Reviewed by Kristian Rasmussen David Ayer’s masterpiece, End of Watch, transports the viewer into what feels like a compilation of the most extreme episodes of the reality television series Cops. The film, which is largely shot in a shaky handy-cam style, follows the adventures of a duo of city officers as they form a thin blue line, which acts as a breakwater against a tidal wave of violence on the streets of Los Angeles.

End of Watch begins by introducing Los Angeles Police Department officers Brian Taylor (Jake Gylenhaal) and Mike Zavala (Michael Pena). Brian is working on a documentary chronicling the day-to-day life of chasing street crime. After a brief introduction to the officers, filmed by Taylor on handy-cam, the audience is strapped into their patrol car for a high speed car chase.

ness of the filming heightens the anxiety and uncertainty of the scene, which ends in a violent shootout between officers and fleeing suspects.

The film excels at achieving authenticity through unpredictability. The majority of the most harrowing and graphic gun battles erupt from the mundane. The two officers spend the majority of their time patrolling and chatting about their relationships. Faster than they can yell “LAPD”, they can find themselves in a bullet storm violent enough to rival the war in Afghanistan.

Although the film is graphic, it exudes a vulnerability on the part of the officers. Despite their machismo, the duo are not immune to the senseless violence and depravity they face on an average day. At every violent encounter the officers are bound to protect each other and after every near-death experience, the machismo between the two is replaced with caring consolation.

Despite the best efforts to clean up their corner of L.A., the duo find themselves on the wrong end of a Mexican cartel. The film’s unconventional film angles become a little overdone at this point. Although it is dizzyingly authentic to have a YouTube-style view of the epic gun battles, which take place throughout End of Watch, the shakiness of the camera angles detract from the action. It is hard, in many of the scenes, to even know what exactly is going on because the camera jumps around faster than a perpetrator resisting arrest.

Even with its overdose of authenticity, End of Watch is a masterful celebration of a world often not seen or appreciated by the public at large.

Trainer reveals trapping secrets

With much of Canada’s past built upon the fur trade, one Columbia Valley trapper weaves history and pioneering pride into every square mile of his trap line.

Frank Rad, a trapper training instructor based out of Cranbrook, can trace a family lineage of outdoorsmen dating back to his grandfather, who came to the Columbia Valley in 1944 and leased traplines along Jumbo Creek and Toby Creek, which the family trapped for decades.

The Pioneer caught up with Mr. Rad to learn about the often hidden world of fur trappers.

“When you get to know trappers, they are very reclusive people,” he said. “They like to be one-on-one in the bush. Whether it happens to be out fishing, hunting, cutting firewood or trapping, it is another season of the year where they can be outside and enjoying nature.”

Mr. Rad began his trapping career with humble roots, learning to catch squirrels and weasels with his brother when he was young. Growing up in a family of outdoor enthusiasts, Mr. Rad took his first trapper training course in 1982. Throughout his experience in the field he has learned to treat trapping much like farming.

Riding club displays big heart

“With trapping, you are managing the fur bearers,” he said. “I trap pine marten up until the New Year and not afterwards, because my female harvest will increase and I don’t want to catch my breeding stock. Just as with farming, if you kill all your cows you are not going to have any calves in the spring. I try to harvest only the excess population that will possibly die of starvation because only a given number can live in so much habitat.”

With over 30 years’ experience in the field, Mr. Rad was appointed as a training instructor by the B.C. Trappers Association in 2010. His main goal in education is to teach responsible trapping methods that focus upon setting traps humanely, sustainably and safely. The three day course begins with a history lesson focusing on the 2,900 trap lines established in 1926.

The curriculum then moves into modern trapping methods, which can be broken down into humane traps, designed to instantly kill, and foothold traps, created to prevent an animal from escaping. Modern traps must meet the requirements designated by the 1997 Agreement on International Human Trapping Standards, signed by Canada and the European Union, Mr. Rad added.

The Brisco Riding Club, with the help of a generous donation by club members Clayton and Diane Mattson of Edgewater, tracked their hooves into the world of philanthropy on January 9th.

A total of $2,100 worth of hay and cash was donated to Calgary’s Forgotten Farm, a non-profit

horse rescue organization. A group of 11 volunteers spent hours loading over 400 bales of hay for delivery to the facility.

“The reasoning was, that a couple that are members had a lot of extra hay,” said Brooke Tegart, of the Brisco Riding Club. “We were thinking that donating hay to a good cause would be a nice thing to do, especially a rescue centre.”.

Mutual fund sales charges Many people wonder what the sales charge options are when they buy mutual funds. Sales charges have been somewhat of a grey area over the past decade as many mutual fund companies have changed their sales charge options.

In addition to these changes, regulators have also slowly pressed for more disclosure from sales agents and the mutual fund companies about the differences in sales charges.

Four options When purchasing a mutual fund in Canada, there are four different options available to the public. These options are the deferred sales charge option (commonly known as DSC), the low-load option, the front-end option, and the no-load option. It should be noted that not all mutual companies offer each of the four sales options.

Deferred sales charge The deferred sales charge option is an arrangement where the financial advisor is compensated for placing the client into a mutual fund by the mutual fund company. This compensation is usually five per cent, although some companies vary from this slightly.

Since the mutual fund company has paid for placement of their product, they expect the purchaser to remain in their product for 5 to 7 years. This 5 to 7 year period varies by company and if the purchaser of the mutual fund decides to redeem their fund during that period, they will be penalized on a declining schedule

that ranges from 5.5 per cent to about 1.5 per cent.

Purchasers of these mutual funds can switch their fund within the product line of the company without penalty.

Low-load charge The low-load charge is identical to the deferred sales charge, but the compensation and lock-up period are lower. Generally, when a low-load mutual fund is purchased, the financial advisor receives a 2 to 3 per cent commission and the purchaser of the fund is lockedin to the product for 2 to 3 years. Again, mutual fund companies all have their variations of the low-load structure, but many fall into the above mentioned range.

Front-end charge A front-end charge is when the financial advisor charges their client to purchase a mutual fund.

This charge can range from 0 to 5 per cent and the financial advisor is not compensated by the mutual fund company. Since the mutual fund company did not pay for the placement of their product, they do not expect the purchaser to remain in their fund for any period of time.

This allows the purchaser to move out of the fund at any time with no penalty. Many financial advisors have gone to a 0 per cent front-end charge to give their clients better flexibility and earn the trailer fees on the mutual fund as their compensation over time.

No-load charges The no-load charge is identical to a 0 per cent frontend charge. The financial advisor is not paid by the mutual company to recommend a fund and they do not charge the client for the purchase. The difference is the mutual fund company will not allow a front-end charge, even if the financial advisor wanted to charge a fee for the purchase.

Industry dilemma With the invention of low-load sales options, many financial advisors and mutual fund providers are questioning the validity of the deferred sales option. While financial advisors are free to choose the type of sales charge they offer their clients, they are also expected to explain all of the sales options available to the funds they are selling and to act in the best interest of their clients. It can seem a bit strange that financial advisors acting in the best interest of their clients would recommend a deferred sales option charge over a low-load charge, so that they can be paid more and so that the client becomes locked-in longer.

Your advisor The type of mutual fund sales charge options that your financial advisor offers is often largely up to the advisor.

Some offer their clients all of the options, while others will offer a limited choice. Some mutual fund companies offer their products with all of the four options available in the market place and others may only offer one or two options.

Toronto-based Morgan Childs will bring his quartet to the acoustically-rich confines of Christ Church Trinity for the evening concert, where jazz afficionados and novices alike can expect to hear what Morgan describes as a “groovy vintage aesthetic” that’s rooted in the jazz music made from the 1940s through the 1960s.

“I’m focused on that old school sounding stuff,” said Morgan, 31, who was born in Vancouver but grew up in Invermere between the ages of 9 and 17. He’s made multiple appearances on CBC’s Hot Air jazz radio program, and is a two-time winner of the Montreal International Jazz Fest’s Grand Prix award — once in 2012, and once in 2009, while playing with another local product, bass player Sean Cronin.

“Morgan’s been away for about 10 years, and he’s really a hit in Toronto now,” said Columbia Valley Arts Council performing arts director Alec Fleming. Prior to moving east, Morgan was part of the Vancouver jazz scene for a decade.

In Invermere, Morgan said he benefitted from the J.A. Laird Elementary band program run by his father, Bruce Childs, and from the stage band run by David Thompson Secondary instructor Greg Constable, who Morgan credits with a laid-back approach that allowed aspiring players to flourish.

“Mr. Constable was a huge influence on me,” he said. “He wanted making music to be an inclusive experience, and didn’t limit the size of the band or make it a competitive thing.”

The Morgan Childs Quartet also includes former Boss Brass pianist Dave Restivo, award-winning saxophonist Kelly Jefferson and bassist Jon Maharaj. The February 3rd show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door.

Local skiers carve out wins

A pair of Invermere ski racers laid some of the leanest lines at the Marmot Basin U-16 racing competition in Jasper on January 18th-20th.

Keegan Sharp and Amelia Smart, both 15, came first place in five out of their six races.

Although he took top spot in giant slalom and slalom, beating out 93 other competitors in each race, Keegan remains humble about the win.

“It isn’t a World Cup or World Junior win, but it is still good,” he said. “It is good to get it in there and to know how I can improve on my skiing and

where I am currently.”

Amelia, who competed against 50 other skiers in each of her races, came first place in giant slalom and two slalom races.

“I was pretty proud of myself in one of the slalom races because there was a very steep part of the course that I thought I skied very well,” she added.

“It doesn’t really reflect that much on my career, but it definitely is a confidence booster.”

The duo are currently preparing themselves for their next big challenge — The U-16 Can-Am Championships held at Panorama Mountain Resort from February 28th - March 3rd.

Recipe Of The Week CAMBODIAN CHICKEN SOUP

1 tablespoon Vegetable Oil 1 teaspoon Ginger Root, Chopped 1 clove Garlic, minced 2 teaspoons Serrano or Hot Chile, minced 2 Chicken Breasts, chopped 2 teaspoons Red Curry Paste

1 tablespoon Curry Powder 1 tablespoon Vinegar 1 tablespoon Fish Sauce 2 cups Chicken Broth 2 (13 oz) cans Coconut Milk 1 can diced Pineapple, drained 2 cups Rice, cooked ½ teaspoon salt

Heat oil in a large pot over medium-high heat.

Mountain set for twilight tournament

By Kristian Rasmussen Pioneer Staff Skiers and snowboarders looking to put the star into the 30th annual Starlight Challenge at Fairmont Hot Springs will get their chance beginning February 1st and running every Friday through the month.

“There’s no other event like it!,” said Colleen McKee, marketing manager at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort.

“Anyone who feels confident on a blue run will do great in the Starlight Challenge.”

of four skiers or snowboarders. Participants complete runs on two separate slalom courses. The objective for racers is to come away with the most consistent times on both courses. The team who can keep their twilight tracks tightest, triumphs.

“It creates a fun atmosphere for a range of ability levels,” Ms. McKee added. “It’s also run at nighttime, so the ski experience is much different and a lot of fun.”

Over 40 skiers and snowboarders participated in the family event last year. The entry age has been lowered for 2013 to allow those aged 15 and up to compete. In addition to the glory of being crowned for competing consistenly, the Hoodoo Grill and Syndicate Board Shop have

sponsored the challenge with a series of prizes, which are awarded each week for the top individuals and teams.

“A healthy competitive spirit and friendly competition has created an event that we’re proud to host and have a lot of fun while doing so,” Ms. McKee added.

Although prizes are up for grabs for the top competitors, including an informal award for the fasted racer, stressing about performance should not be part of the event, Ms. McKee said.

The damage was first discovered by volunteers at the Invermere Thrift Shop early Tuesday morning after they noticed water dripping from ceiling tiles directly below the employment centre. Overall, damage to the thrift shop remained minimal.

Although job browsers were unable to peruse postings while the centre remained closed, staff kept all of their scheduled appointments with clients while Invermere’s Ptarmigan Rug Cleaners & Restoration cleaned up the mess.

. . . “Trapper” continued from page 12 In accordance with the agreement, humane traps must be designed to kill an animal within a certain amount of time.

Foothold traps, which were originally designed with teeth, are now manufactured to hold a trapped animal without injury and with minimal stress. They must now be toothless and come with a dedicated space in between the closed jaws of the trap to ensure the blood circulation to the animal’s foot.

Foothold traps can also be outfitted with rubber jaws to minimize bruising and discomfort to the animal.

“I have caught wolves in foothold traps and when I walked up they were sleeping,” he added. “Once they have fought and realized they can’t go anywhere, they basically relax and lie down.”

Once the course is completed, graduates can purchase a trapping tenure in B.C., which range from 200 to 1000 square miles and varies in price between $5,000 to $50,000. Once a trapline is purchased, responsible ownership becomes the next concern.

“Right now there are no legal requirements for a trapper to put signage up,” said Mr. Rad. “Quite a few of the trappers are putting signage up and warning the public that there is active trapping going on, but some of them have had so much vandalism and theft that they don’t want to do it anymore.”

Although it is unlikely that a human would become injured as the result of a set trap because of their obvious placement, pets are another concern, he said.

“Responsible pet owners must have their dogs under control, which means on a leash. If they are not

on a leash, they’re not under control.”

“Some people think that because their dog is right beside them that the dog is safe, but they are nose-driven and need to investigate,” he added.

Despite the hard work and responsibilities that come with trapping, the rewards are not measured only in pelts.

“I have had some incredible times with my kids and nieces and nephews,” said Mr. Rad. “Some days the catch is very low, but it is still very rewarding being out there. You can’t get that time back. The time spent with the kids gives them the tools which helps them grow into good people.”

We are merely human

By Pastor Murray Wittke Valley Christian Assembly Accepting that I’m merely human has been a struggle. I long to be so much more ­— to be like God! I want to know and understand everything, to know what’s best in every situation, and have answers for all the questions.

I want to have everything under control, be able to fix every problem, right every wrong, and remake this broken-down world.

I want to go everywhere, experience everything, and enjoy everyone. I want to be perfectly good, love unconditionally, and I want to be loved for who I am, but I’m not God. I’m merely human.

Created from the dust of the earth into fragile flesh and blood, I’m utterly dependent. I need food, water, oxygen, and rest just to keep going. No matter how thin

I spread myself, I still can only be in one place at a time.

Every day I’m confronted with my ignorance. I have more questions than answers and there’s just so much I don’t know. Every day I’m faced with my weakness.

Almost everything in my world is beyond my ability to change, fix, or control. I recognize there’s goodness in me, but I’m also aware of the dangerously dark desires lurking in the shadows of my soul. Selfish to the core, I want everyone to make much of me, to love me.

To be honest, when I do love, I love poorly. I’m not like God; I’m broken.

A year ago, I encountered the most basic fact of being human in this fallen world: I’m not going to live forever.

Last January, when I heard my doctor say “cancer,” I felt the weight of God’s sentence on fallen humanity.

No one gets out of here alive. Radiation treatments and the mercy of God appear to have halted the cancer for now, but even so, one day I will die just like everyone else.

The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. I’m not God, but that’s OK. Jesus Christ is a saviour for all who are broken and merely human.

A fully-trained staff of 10 police officers means more patrols at Kinsmen Beach and continued community engagement are on the agenda this year for the Columbia Valley RCMP, Staff Sergeant Marko Shehovac revealed during an end-of-year presentation to District of Invermere council on Tuesday, January 22nd.

By the end of April, the detachment’s two cadets will have completed their training, bringing staff to one commander, two corporal supervisors, and eight constables.

The RCMP can expect to face the equivalent of roughly one call for every person in Invermere over the year, as 2012 numbers show the Columbia Valley RCMP fielded 3,252 calls for service in their service area in 2012. (Invermere alone accounted for 773 calls for service.) That reflects a more accurate number than the 2011 figure of 2,136 calls, after a computer data glitch was corrected, explained Staff Sgt. Shehovac, Through the end of February, senior RCMP members are attending community meetings in order to

determine policing priorities. In Radium, the re-opening of the Canfor mill has prompted more concerns about high traffic speeds of vehicle driving to and from the site.

The detachment used all of the 2012 summer seasonal policing budget of $10,000, and expects to do so again. On the drug and alcohol front, the detachment aimed to lay 10 charges on prolific offenders in 2012, and ended up laying 24 charges, thanks in part to member training that’s resulted in more quality charges arising from search warrants. Continued drug enforcement and education efforts remain the top item on the detachment’s radar this year.

“If no one is telling me that there’s an issue with drugs and alcohol, then they’re all stoned,” deadpanned Staff Sgt. Sheovac at the council meeting.

Asked about RCMP members’ involvement in “snowboard patrols” at Panorama Mountain Village, Staff Sgt. Shehovac confirmed the detachment does have an agreement with the ski resort, allowing off-duty members to patrol the ski area while enjoying the slopes, dealing with drug and alcohol offences, and occasionally assisting ski patrols with First Aid efforts.
