Valley serves as SportsCentre backdrop

By Dan Walton Pioneer Staff The nation received its sports news from Invermere on Monday, August 19th, as Kraft and The Sports Network (TSN) rolled into town to host a live SportsCentre broadcast in front of Lake Windermere at Kinsmen Beach.

The broadcast was part of the 2013 Kraft Celebration Tour, where Invermere was scheduled as the fourth stop in their cross-country tour with ten different locations. Invermere won hosting rights for the event after voters threw massive support towards Invermere during a head-to-head matchup against Pemberton.

“You would be hard pressed to find a better backdrop than this literally anywhere in the world,” commented host Darren Dutchyshen during the broadcast, which got rolling at 4 p.m. after two hours of kids activities and vendors sharing their goods on the beach.

Along with the live SportsCentre broadcast, the win

also included a $25,000 donation from Kraft, which supports the Rotary Club’s plans for a Splash and Spray Park at the Kinsmen Beach.

Asked how Invermere measured up to their other tour stops, SportsCentre co-host Jennifer Hedger told The Pioneer “You can never say you have a favourite but I don’t think we’ll do better than this as far as the set is concerned. With the mountains, the lake, and it was a beautiful sunny day with the boats out there — it’ll be hard to do better than that.”

Ms. Hedger name-dropped some of the valley’s famous athletes during the broadcast, noting Ben Thomsen, Doug Anakin, and Wade Dubielewicz — or “Doobie”, as Mr. Dutchyshen commented — are products of local sports programs.

Before TSN brought its studio to Invermere, they had producers visit and prepare an inspirational story about an encouraging local. To commemorate one of the valley’s athletic legacies, 69-year-old Bruce Stroud was

featured on the program for founding the Heart of the Rockies Triathlon. The anchors gave a brief history of the event, and mentioned the long-standing coveted prize — a 20-ounce beer mug.

“Look at the day. That’s all it takes,” Mr. Stroud said about the event. “It’s exactly the way it’s supposed to be.”

The SportsCentre hosts mentioned their recent visit atop Mount Swansea, where they were lead by Max Fanderl and Penny Powers.

“So their idea of a little walk up to the top was a little different from my idea of a little walk to the top,” said Ms. Hedger.“We drove up that logging, mining road, which was a super bumpy ride. And I’m not great with heights, so to be driving up there and to be looking at that huge dropoff – it was a little unnerving for me.

But it was worth it. And that little bench that was at the top of Mount Swansea, it was so cool to sit up there.”

Injunction sought against anti-Jumbo checkpoint

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff A showdown is looming at the Citizens for Jumbo Wild checkpoint on the Farnham Creek road, with Glacier Resorts Ltd. having applied for an injunction against the watchdog group’s camp.

The group set up their camp, including a van (sprayed painted with a Jumbo Wild slogan) parked across the road in checkpoint fashion, almost a month ago and Glacier Resorts Ltd. vice-president Grant Costello and some construction machinery did not get past the camp in a standoff on Saturday, July 10th.

Mr. Costello served notice to the campers that the

developers were seeking an injunction at 1:45 p.m. on Friday, August 16th. Glacier Resorts Ltd. then applied for the injunction in the B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver on Monday, August 19th.

Lawyer Jason Gratl, who was acting in court on behalf Nelson-based lawyer Judah Harrison (who was in turn acting on behalf of the Citizens group), made a motion to adjourn the application for a week, so the hearing is now slated for Monday, August 26th.

“They have until Thursday (August 22nd) to provide the court reasons for their actions,” Mr. Costello told The Pioneer.

Both lawyers acting on behalf of the Citizens group commented on the time between serving notice

and the injunction application.

“The application was set down for yesterday (Monday, August 19th) on no business days’ notice; it was a little audacious,” said Mr. Gratl on Tuesday, August 20th, adding the judge granted the adjournment to allow the checkpoint group an opportunity to prepare.

Serving notice on Friday afternoon in Invermere and applying for the injunction on Monday morning in Vancouver was short leave, added Mr. Harrison.

“It was a tactical move to try and catch the campers off guard,” he said. “But luckily they were efficient enough to get some legal help together.”

Marko Shehovac Columbia Valley RCMP • At 11:50 p.m. on Friday, August 16th, the Columbia Valley RCMP detachment received a complaint of a disturbance in the 1500 block of 13th Avenue. A female was reported to be intoxicated and screaming. Police attended the area and made patrols of the area with negative results.

• At 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 17th, detachment members responded to a complaint of a fight in front of Bud’s Bar. At the time of attendance, the people involved in the disturbance were not located.

Later, at approximately 5 a.m., there was a complaint of a disturbance in front of the hospital. A 35-year-old male from Radium Hot Springs was located and found to be bleeding from the face. The male indicated he was involved in an altercation that appeared to be related to the first call at 12:30 a.m. The victim did not request police involvement or charges. The male was treated at the hospital and released.

• At 1:18 a.m. on Saturday, August 17th, the detachment received a complaint of an intoxicated male passed out in the 1300 block of 7th Avenue. Police located a 22-year-old male from Calgary, and eventually woke him up. The male advised that he had worked long hours and consumed more than he should have. Police were able to determine from the male that he had family in the area. He was driven to the family member.

• At 3:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 17th, detachment members received a complaint of a disturbance in the area of the 1300 block of 7th Avenue. The person reporting the incident advised that there appeared to be two groups of males pushing each other and that a fight may break out. The males departed the area before police arrived. Patrols were negative for any further disturbance in the area.

• At 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 17th, the detachment attended to a vehicle collision with a bear on Highway 93/95 near Canal Flats. A 2008 Toyota Corolla driven by a 50-year-old female from Cranbrook collided with a small bear crossing the highway. The vehicle had to be towed from the scene. A search of the area for the bear proved negative.

• At 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 17th, the detachment responded to a complaint of an assault where

an argument resulted in a 23-year-old male from Invermere pushing a female off a dock. The male was arrested for assault.

• At 7:50 p.m. on Saturday, August 17th, a male hiking in the area of the Catamount Glacier near Radium fell and seriously injured his ankle. Companions were able to depart the area to get into cell phone range to contact the detachment for assistance. Due to the location, local Search and Rescue personnel were contacted. Search and Rescue were flown into the area by Elbow River Helicopters and were able to recover the injured male, who was taken to Invermere hospital.

• At 1:46 a.m. on Sunday, August 18th, the detachment received a complaint of assault after a male was refused entry into a bar. This male and another 19-year-old male got into an argument where the 19-year-old male was assaulted. There were no serious injuries. The investigation is continuing.

• At 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 18th, as a result of a complaint of disturbance, a 31-year-old female from Calgary was arrested in Radium for being drunk in public. The female indicated that she would drive back to Calgary. Friends had seized the key. As the female was refusing to co-operate, she was lodged in cells for the night.

It might be a noticeable dent, and you would be lucky if they report it. It’s just a dent, the cost of doing business. Hardly visible, no sweat. Well, back in the days or as Cpl. Grant Simpson often will say, the Markosaurus days, it was big trouble and you would be disciplined for any dents you put on a police vehicle. We were fortunate in Maple Ridge — the community was small enough in the late 1970s that we got to know our mechanics and garage operators. A quick phone call, payment to the tune of a bottle of whiskey, and voila, the garage is open at midnight and we would do some quick dent repairs.

The owner would just tell us to lock up. I worked with an officer who told me that while stationed at the Mission Detachment, he had the same experience with his dent.

I gathered that his dent was much more serious when he told the oncoming day shift officer to not lean on the right front fender area as the paint was fresh.

Fairmont Community Association seeking new board members

By Greg Amos Pioneer Staff A week before its annual general meeting on Saturday, August 31st, the Fairmont Community Association is looking for some new blood to revitalize the organization.

With the association board’s current president, secretary and treasurer all looking to step down from their positions, a few new members are needed to ensure there’s a forum in place to give Fairmont Hot Springs a voice at times when it’s needed.

“It’s difficult to generate enthusiasm when there’s nobody panicking,” explained current president Tim Gould, a property owner in Fairmont since 1994 and a full-time resident for more than a decade. “We have to be around to be heard.”

The community association was a vital voice for the community in liaising with the provincial Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and the Regional District of East Kootenay in the wake of last summer’s heavy rains and flooding.

The community group also played an important role in supporting the movement towards preserving the 315acre Lot 48 property on the east side of Columbia Lake.

Issues it could be facing in the future include the demand for a boat launch on north end of Columbia Lake, as many Fairmont residents must now go to either Windermere or Canal Flats to launch their boats.

The community association is generally not a large commitment, explained Mr. Gould, as the board meets one evening every two months at the new Lions Den Community Centre in Fairmont Hot Springs, with meetings usually wrapping up in less than two hours.

The fact that regional district Area F director Wendy Booth sits on the board as a non-voting member makes it an effective forum for conveying local ideas and opinions to the regional district, said Mr. Gould.

Board positions last for two years, and are open to locals and part-time residents. With most board members being older than 60 years, now is a time to get some younger people involved, he said. Most of the executive, have been in their roles for three or four years.

After starting as a property owners association, the organization has now been around for more than 25 years. Anyone can join the association for a $25 membership fee, and membership now sits at about 60.

In the past, it’s had as many as 150 members, out of the roughly 500 voting-age residents in Fairmont.

The annual general meeting will be held on Saturday, August 31st at 10 a.m. at the Lions Den Community Centre, located at 5003 Hot Springs Road, next to Tony’s Greek Grill.

A fine forum for Fairmont

A community association is like a lifeboat — it’s something you don’t think about until you really need it.

Torrential rains and Biblical-scale flooding in the valley last June and July made clear the importance of the Fairmont Community Association, who were able to convey local wishes to regional and provincial governments as the community rebuilt from the mudslide impacts, and got the funding to study the phenomena in the hopes of lessening the impact next time around.

In the absence of disasters or can’t-miss funding opportunities, the workloads for community association board member tend to be on the light side. The occasional meeting provides a chance for two-way communications with the regional district area representative, who can give the group a head’s up on grants or convey how new Regional District of East Kootenay bylaws will impact an area.

But the combination of an aging population in Fairmont Hot Springs and a dwindling sense of community involvement are keeping the current executive trapped in their roles: without replacements, the organization would have to fold. (See story on previous page.)

It’s a similar story with the Windermere Community Association — they’re a dedicated yet aging bunch in search of fresh young talent to bring aboard. On a broad level, it’s an issue affecting the whole valley: one generation sees volunteering as a way to show community spirit, while another would rather celebrate their community by spending time with family and friends.

For those able to spare an evening every two months to help out, I encourage them to get involved with their local community association.

• On a completely unrelated note: it’s great to be back in Invermere! After three months of recovery from a 20-metre rock climbing fall, which had me a little beat up at first (see masthead photo), I’m down to one crutch and should be walking normally again soon.

Wondering why deer cull happened Dear Editor:

In the August 16th Pioneer, a letter to the editor (“Culling deer not a solution”) states that “in 2011 the Invermere Council made the regrettable decision to kill deer.”

I’ve been wondering why I have seen only three deer this summer on our property at Calberly Beach, and one lonely deer beside the highway. There was also the skeleton of a deer in the protected Douglas forest near Calberly.

The letter in The Pioneer states “since the war on deer began, all that has been proven is that we harm

rather than cherish, wildlife.” This is quite a difference from the mindset in Banff where the reports of grizzly and black bears using overpasses 90 per cent of the time to cross the TransCanada Highway is celebrated (Calgary Herald, Friday, August 16th, 2013)! Why in Invermere — a town that organizes the amazing Wings Over the Rockies event — would “culling of deer” be acceptable?

This is a town where so many people also care about the welfare of bats!

Give wildlife a wide berth Dear Editor: Just before arriving into Radium on Highway 93, my family and I were witness to some of the worst stupidity I’ve seen. A man and woman, along with their young son, and this man (in the photo) were dangerously close to a young moose.

People need to realize that they are not only putting themselves in danger, but, most importantly, they are putting these incredible creatures in danger, as well as other motorists on the highway.

Lake of the Hanging Glacier trail reconnected

By Dan Walton Pioneer Staff Hikers can again enjoy one of the valley’s “must dos” – the Lake of the Hanging Glacier trail.

After 14 work days worth of effort were applied by the Summit Trail Makers Society towards the installation of two new bridges, crossing a river is no longer required to complete the trail.

Along with employees of Pioneer Forest Consulting, who volunteered their time, members of the Trail Makers installed a 70-foot (21-metre) long metal bridge over Horsethief Creek, which runs directly through the Lake of the Hanging Glacier trail. Before the new bridge, there was a 40-foot (12-metre) long bridge to support hikers — up until severe weather washed it away more than a year ago.

“Last year [winter 2011-2012] we had a lot of snow, and there were a lot of avalanches covering lots of different trails, and the water rose very high and it washed out one support on one end of the [Horsethief Creek] bridge,” said Brian Wesley, who’s a member of the Society.

Because the new bridge is more than 50 per cent larger than its predecessor, “the supports are much further away from the edge of the river now; I’d say it’s got a pretty good shelf life,” he said.

Fourteen Trail Makers Society volunteers, along with a handful of helpers from Pioneer Forest Consulting, spent July 30th and 31st reconnecting the famous trail. To transport the giant aluminum structure into the middle of the woods, a helicopter was needed.

Pioneer Forest Consulting were instrumental in securing the bridge into place, Mr. Wesley said.

“A crew of five or six built the place where the bridge is anchored down, then the helicopter brought the unit in. It dropped it where they wanted it, and they fastened it all down and finished it by putting the walking boards down.”

Mr. Wesley said Lake of the Hanging Glacier is one of the only lakes in the valley which hosts icebergs.

“Because of the prevailing winds, they get blown towards where the trail ends at the north end of the lake,” he said. “It’s quite spectacular.”

The trail can be hiked until around Thanksgiving time, he said, when snow begins to cover the trail.

Trails are one of the main attractions for the Invermere area, he said.

“One of the best ways to get close to the mountains is to go hiking. And if nobody maintained the trails, hiking would be a little difficult.”

The Trail Makers’ next project will take place this week at the Bugaboo Pass trail and the trail into the Silver Basin, for scheduled upkeep.

“There’ll be trees that have blown over in the winter, and sometimes avalanches. But we’re just going up for regular maintenance, so we’ll see what we see when we get there.”

Furious over ‘safe food’ Dear Editor:

In the August 2nd edition of The Pioneer, there was a letter from the Chair of the Windermere Fall Fair & Scarecrow Festival advising everyone that Interior Health’s “Safe Food Practices” would no longer “allow” a canning and baking category. This may well be the last straw. Home canning and baking has been a part of country fairs for, well, at least a century. Why has this suddenly become so dangerous?

Life in small communities revolves around potluck suppers, country fairs, spaghetti and chili suppers at community halls and numerous other events that have been the glue that keeps rural folks connected to one another. For decades we all have been attending, supporting and encouraging these local events and, after discussing this with a good number of local folks, no one can remember anyone dying or even getting close to sick due to unsafe food. Some of us may have suffered from overindulgence of one kind or another, but that was due to our own over-enjoyment.

The real problems come from contamination of our food supplies originating from government inspected and approved facilities (most recently, packaged salad mixes), not from our neighbours’ kitchens. Most of us are capable of making our own decisions about what events we want to attend. We really don’t need more government regulations.

We don’t know if this level of control is mandated to Interior Health by the Provincial Government or if we are looking at an overly zealous interpretation of the rules. In either case, we have to take some steps as citizens or we will lose more and more of the local events that make country life enjoyable.

We can call Dan Byron at Interior Health at 250420-2240 to express our concerns and maybe get some answers. If this has to go to the Provincial Government, perhaps, in the meantime, Interior Health can give us signs to post at our risky events stating they are not responsible and we should sample that jar of jam at our own risk. Covers their rear end and lets us make our own choices.

We all feel some of these rules and regulations are stupid. So come on everyone, pick up that phone and make your concerns known before it is too late.

Karl couple recovering from Wasa crash

By Dan Walton Pioneer Staff Many locals were distraught to hear of a near-tragic car accident near Wasa that involved a couple who are well-known in the valley, former Invermere residents Jenn and Ryan “Butter” Karl, and the community’s response was anything but passive. Ryan Karl has been left in disbelief by the outpour of generousity.

“We have lasagna, beef on a bun — the (donated) food is amazing,” he told The Pioneer. “All the support has been a big help; it’s unbelievable people care so much.”

Investigators said that a dump truck had pulled onto Highway 93/95 from the community of Wasa and proceeded north. The Karl’s minivan was also travelling north and, according to Jenn, the truck entered their lane and the two vehicles collided several hundred metres north of the intersection. The Karls’ van was struck on the passenger’s side.

The Kimberley RCMP detachment’s report on the accident later described Jenn’s injuries as serious, but not life threatening.

The couple have two children, five-year-old Harley and six-year-old Jaxson.

Friend of the family Sarah Megaffin took to Facebook to lend as best a hand as she could.

“I am in Invermere collecting baking, meals or non perishable items for the Karl’s this weekend as it will be a tough go for a while at home in Calgary,” she posted, which resulted in an overwhelmingly positive response.

Ryan said Sarah has been “an absolute angel” for how she’s been able to help the family and that it’s “a definite miracle” that Jenn survived the crash. Wearing a seatbelt was critical for both Ryan and Jenn, and Jenn had one more factor in her favour.

“If she had not laid her seat back for sleeping, she would have had a huge piece of metal go right into her face,” Ryan said.

Though the cause of the accident has yet to be determined, Ryan reminds everyone that “distracted driving law was enacted for a reason.”

Movie Review: Scary Movie 5 Reviewed by Dean Midyette Scary Movie V begins where its predecessors left off, this time spoofing movies including A House in the Woods, Paranormal Activity, Mama, Black Swan, Sinister, Inception, plus a few others. The story begins humorously enough with Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan having fun with their real life issues whilst laying the foundation for the plot: Charlie’s three children have gone missing and a large reward is offered for their return. The opening segment is by far the funniest of the entire movie.

Following the series formula, writer and producer David Zucker (Airplane, The Naked Gun) spins a tale that pinballs amongst the movie themes that are being parodied, desperately trying to stay cohesive while coming to a logical conclusion. Alas, even cameos from such notables at Mike Tyson, Heather Locklear, Molly Shannon, Usher

and Snoop Dogg can’t help this vapid offering.

The children are rescued from “a house in the woods” and go to live with their aunt and uncle (Ashley Tisdale and Simon Rex). Seemingly safe in their new home, the children are haunted by “Mama,” a spirit who apparently watched over them during their time away from the maddened hordes. Trying to rid their home of the evil entity, Dan and Jody (Tisdale and Rex) blunder their way

through plot snippets poached from a plethora of plays.

I’ve never been a big fan of slapstick and this movie has it in buckets, as well as jokes that involve bodily fluids (and no, the bodily fluids do not end up in buckets), bulimia, erotic paraphernalia, religious fervour, psychotropic drugs, race relations and the Second Amendment of the United States constitution — not much of which is funny. In fact, the dialogue seems to have been written by someone who had taken one too many hits to the head with a two by four (which would have been funnier than most of the gags in this movie), but if you like Benny Hill or jokes that involve testicular compression, then this movie is a must-see.

‘Pure Chaos’ art show on display at Pynelogs

By Matthew Brummitt CV Arts One of the largest, most colourful, most plentiful and most dynamic collection of artwork currently adorns the walls of Pynelogs Art Gallery & Cultural Centre. With such a huge range supplied by six different artists, the word ‘chaotic’ might come to mind when describing the show.

Yet, with her experience and creative edge, galley curator, Jami Scheffer brings the show together to form a unique and functional blend that highlights the artists individually as well as collectively.

Mr. Smith noted the production crew members were “quite impressed with the community.”

“Even the first bunch of people who started getting the groundwork done, they’ve been raving about our community ever since,” he said.

“It’s a huge showcase for our community,” Rotary Club past president Barb Smith told The Pioneer. “We know we live in paradise, but not everyone else out there does, so this way we can get out on national television how great it is to live and visit here.”

Shane Goodwin, originally from Australia but now living in Calgary and part-time at Panorama Mountain Village, said the live broadcast was a thrill.

“I thought it was really cool; I haven’t seen that before,” he said. “But the $25,000 to the splash park and seeing the community come out was the best part.”

“The weather just turned on; it was a bit dodgy earlier, but it turned out really nice in the end,” he added.

But not everybody agreed about what was the best part; to Tate Goodwin, the free food was the best reason to take in the events on the lakeshore.

Representing all levels of government, Kootenay–Columbia MP David Wilks, Columbia Valley–Revelstoke MLA Norm Macdonald, and Invermere Mayor Gerry Taft were all part of the presentation.

Prior to the donation from Kraft, the Rotary Club received $50,000 from Panorama Foundation.

The Rotary project is now at the $200,000 mark, more than halfway towards the $320,000 fund raising goal.

Walk to find a Parkinson’s cure Contributed by Laura Darch Lace up your runners and grab a friend — registration is now open for Parkinson SuperWalk. The 3rd annual event takes place on Saturday, September 7th at 1:30 p.m. in Invermere’s Pothole Park.

SuperWalk is the largest national fundraising event for Parkinson’s disease and, this September, 95 communities across Canada and 18 communities throughout B.C. (Burnaby, Campbell River, Chilliwack, Cranbrook, Duncan, Elk Valley, Fraser Valley, Kamloops, Kelowna, Nelson, Parksville, Pitt Meadows, Prince George, Salmon Arm, Surrey, Vancouver, Vernon and Invermere) will join the fight to find a cure. In communities with no organized walk, supporters can get involved by registering as a virtual walker.

In B.C., the goal is to beat the 2012 fundraising record of $595,000. Nationwide, the aim is to raise $3.3 million.

and is at the heart of the event’s success.

“In our first year, we had 24 walkers who raised $3,000.

The next year, 36 walkers raised more than $7,000. This year, we hope to raise $14,000. We need lots of walkers and lots of pledges,” said Ms. Sander.

Proceeds from SuperWalk go to research and support services provided by Parkinson Society British Columbia (PSBC). Last year alone, PSBC funded two local researchers, hosted a regional conference and Young Onset seminar, delivered clinician training and community lectures to more than 400 people across the province, added five new support groups (bringing the current total to 53), and spoke one-on-one to more than 1,700 individuals seeking information. Parkinson’s is the second most common degenerative neurological disorder after Alzheimer’s. It is estimated that 11,000 British Columbians and more than 100,000 Canadians live with the disease. Are group RESPs good value?

Many parents want to help their children pursue post-secondary education, and save money within a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) to assist with the cost. This is a good idea, as some estimates put the cost of a four-year university program beginning in the year 2030 at somewhere between $85,000 and $136,000, depending on where the child resides during schooling.

While deciding to save is the first step, the second and perhaps more important step is selecting the type of RESP to use: individual or group.

What is a group RESP? Also known as group scholarship trust plans, group RESPs differ greatly from the plans offered by banks, credit unions and other financial advisors. Firstly, they are called group plans because one’s assets are pooled with those of other students. The income earned on contributions and government grants is usually intended for the use of all students in the plan, not just one’s own children.

When opening a group RESP, plan holders must decide at the outset how much they would like to contribute. This is calculated as either a monthly contribution or a specific dollar amount by the time the child is 17. That dollar amount determines how many units of the investment plan they are agreeing to purchase.

What are the fees?

Group or scholarship trust plans have multiple types of fees, including enrolment, depository, trustee, insurance, administration, custodian and investment fees. Of all the different fees, the most damning are the enrolment fees.

While the enrolment fee is a flat amount per unit, the cost of each unit varies widely from person to person and is not disclosed in absolute terms. For example, one prospectus lists the enrolment fee as $200 per unit and says that it can be between 3.1 and 24.1 per cent of the cost of a unit.

The same prospectus uses an example of a five-unit plan, which will be paid for with contributions of $50 per month. If we assume the parents spend 17 years contributing to the plan, the enrolment fee equals almost 10 per cent of total contributions.

How is the money invested?

Group RESPs in Canada invest in fixed income such as bonds, T-bills and mortgages. There is no option to use equities. This means that in today’s low interest rate and low growth environment, returns will likely be poor.

The same prospectus mentioned above lists their 2012 return as only 2.5 per cent, barely above the consumer price index increase of 1.5 per cent.

Other key points With a group RESP there is a definite lack of flex-

ibility as compared to an individual plan, namely, contributions must be made according to a pre-defined schedule and failure to make them can result permanent loss of the plan if the plan holder abstains from payments for long enough.

Also, children who do not attend a four-year program don’t derive full benefit from the plan, as their grant money is doled out each year in increments. With an individual plan, parents have the option of taking out the bulk of grants in the first year, ensuring their use.

Final thoughts Currently, over 70 per cent of all RESP assets reside in individual plans and less than 30 per cent is in group plans. Group RESPs have the dubious history of falling into problems with the various provincial securities councils for their rigid terms and conditions, lack of transparency and unethical behavior of salespeople. They have made some reforms in recent years, but still retain a lot of their inflexibility.

With that being said, group RESPs can be reasonable if a parent sees them through until the end and their child completes a 4-year program. But if any of these conditions are not met, they are almost certainly less advantageous than individual plans.

Valley loses a track star and community champion

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff The valley recently lost one of its better-known residents when Ed Kluczny died a few weeks ago.

When Mr. Kluczny died on August 4th, he was 91 years old and was, by the accounts of those who knew him best, as cheerful and positive as he was for most of his long, active life.

Mr. Kluczny was born in Empress, Alberta in 1921.

He was a cook at a Buck Lake forestry camp, ran the Buck Lake store and eventually became a teacher in the Edmonton area, before moving to Brisco sometime in the 1970s (friends and family vary as to exactly when) where he was deeply involved in many aspects of community.

He built a roundhouse made of horizontal logs encased in straw and mortar when he moved to Brisco, was instrumental in bringing television to the Brisco area and was part of the Brisco Community Association (including serving as its president) for a long time, according to Mr. Einer.

“Ed was a pillar of the community,” said Mr. Kluczny’s long time neighbour Warner Einer. “He always attended community meetings in Brisco, even after he eventually moved to Invermere, which is pretty impressive. He was always willing to help and he never turned down any project.”

Mr. Kluczny was quick to pitch in with just about any kind of project, even singing in the church choir and playing piano, according to his stepdaughter Grace Sander.

“He was community-minded,” said his daughter-inlaw Karen Rurka. “He was so positive.”

Mr. Kluczny was also known to perform various roles in plays, once even playing the wicked stepmother in Snow White, according to Ms. Sander.

“He was a funny person. Nothing scared him and nothing daunted him,” she said.

Mr. Kluczny went through a lot in his life, including fighting in World War I as a pilot and losing all three of his wives to cancer, but through it all he kept his same upbeat outlook on life, said Ms. Rurka.

“That didn’t hold him back; he just kept going,” she said. “Even in his illness, he accepted it and stayed positive right until the end.”

He remained in fantastic shape right to the end of his life, frequently participating in the BC Senior Games in the sport of speed walking — most recently last year — and winning roughly 39 medals overall.

Mr. Kluczny spent the final few years of his life at Columbia Garden Village in Invermere, where he continued to be generous, often donating books to local Kindergarten classes, according to Ms. Rurka.

“He was an absolutely wonderful man,” said Ms.

Sander. “I don’t know of anybody who ever said anything bad about him.”

Mr. Kluczny had five kids (two of them adopted) and many grandchildren and, according to Ms. Sander, he did his best to be involved in their lives as much as he could.

“I had three stepfathers in my life and he was the best one I had,” she said.

“He was just an amazing father,” said Ms. Rurka, adding that a lot of people who knew him considered him a father figure even if they weren’t related to him.

Friends and family said Mr. Kluczny was a great conversationalist and loved to read as many newspapers and magazines as he could to keep on top of what was going on.

“He’s going to be missed by the community, big time. We’re just going to have to follow in his footsteps,” said Mr. Einer. “He was a kind gentleman.”

NOTICE OF COUNCIL INITIATIVE MERGED WATER LOCAL SERVICE AREA BYLAW 149, 2013 Notice of a Council Initiative (subject to petition against) process is given to the property owners of the Eagles Nest Water Service Area and the Canal Flats Water Service Area for the merging to upgrade the water distribution system created under Bylaw 149, 2013.

Notice is hereby given pursuant to the provisions of section 217 of the Community Charter that the Council of the Village of Canal Flats wishes to merge the Eagles Nest Water Service Area and Canal Flats Water Service Area distribution systems.

Village of Canal Flats Council, on July 22, 2013, gave three readings to the “Merged Water Local Service Area Bylaw 149, 2013” proposing to merge the Eagles Nest Water Service Area and the Canal Flats Water Service Area as a merged local water service area.

Property response forms for this Council Initiative are available to the owners of properties of the Eagles Nest Water Local Service Area and the Canal Flats Water Service Area and as per the attached map. Only qualified owners who are opposed to the merging need sign the petition response forms. If 2 or more persons are owners of land, they must be considered as one owner only and are only entitled to petition if a majority of them concur. Qualified owners who are in favour of this merging do not have to sign or submit any documents.

Unless petitions are signed by at least fifty percent (50%) of the property owners representing at least fifty (50%) percent of the assessed value of land and improvements and submitted to the Village of Canal Flats at Box 159, 8866 Grainger Road, Canal Flats, BC V0B 1B0, petitioning the Village Council NOT to proceed, Village Council may adopt this merging bylaw within 30 days after notice has been given.

The deadline for receipt of the signed owner’s opposition form to the Village of Canal Flats Municipal office is 4:30 p.m. on Monday September 30, 2013.

It is mid-August which is quite likely the most important time on the gardening calendar.

This week marks the peak performance of your garden. From this week forward, through the fading days of autumn, your garden will be in decline.

While there are some fabulous early spring flowering plants that you have enjoyed and other plants that bloom best in October that are ahead of you, many vegetable and fruit crops are yet to reach the crescendo of their ripeness.

The best of their season lies before us. We are standing on the Continental Divide of the gardening season: on your right is the past four months where planting is history; on your left is the next four months. Your job is to manage the flow of the season in your favour.

The changing of the season, as imperceptible as it is to the layman in early August, places new demands on the gardener. This is also the time of year when you should dig up your garlic, lay the exposed bulbs in the sun for a few days to cure and develop a tough outside shell; then hang them in a well-ventilated room, but out of direct sunlight until you are ready to use them. If you did not plant garlic and wish that you had, it is instructive to note that the whole process is counter-intuitive. We plan to have this work completed by the end of the 2013 calendar year, and we will be communicating with our communities and partners about these priorities. The Rocky Mountain International Student Program (RMISP) places students from around the world in School District No. 6 (Invermere, Kimberley and Golden Zones) and No. 19 (Revelstoke). Last year, 23 students from Germany, Mexico, Japan and Switzerland attended David Thompson Secondary School (DTSS) for periods ranging from three to ten months. This year, RMISP will be placing 20 or more students at DTSS to live and learn in Invermere and area.

The program is beneficial to both the school system and the community as a whole. By placing international students at DTSS and in local homes, RMISP creates and supports the following benefits and opportunities in the Columbia Valley and DTSS: learning and social environments that are enhanced by international perspectives, experiences, and ideas; international tourism via students’ friends and families; student spending at local businesses; international exposure for Invermere and area via students’ social media channels; fostering intercultural relationships between students and local host families; and helping counter issues with declining enrolment.

RMISP also provides information and opportunities for local students interested in travelling abroad. The program continues to grow and evolve as it seeks to bring the world to Invermere while inspiring DTSS students to embrace the world. Interested in hosting a student?

Jim Jenkinson Board Chairperson RMISP is always looking for local families interested in joining our homestay program. Host families come in all shapes and sizes from nuclear families with schoolaged children to retired couples to single parents, and live throughout the valley from Fairmont to Edgewater.

David Thompson Secondary School A new school year is about to start, and David Thompson Secondary will welcome back approximately 420 students this September. Among our new residents and our freshman Grade 8s, we will once more welcome students from around the world as our international program continues to grow. This year, we expect eighteen students from Japan, Spain, and Germany. We are thrilled to have these guests for the coming months and look forward to showing off our beautiful valley and community to them.

Students, staff and parents are all looking forward to the new school year and what changes and adventures lie ahead. The 2013-14 year at Edgewater Elementary School (EES) will bring some added curiousity and mark the start of a new chapter as the school welcomes a new principal to a very talented and experienced teaching staff.

EES continues to be a proud “Green School” and to continue to do its part in reducing the carbon footprint. Through educational projects, programs and initiatives the students continue to learn and understand the importance of being “green.”

Come and visit EES and you will quickly understand why students in K-7 do so well in this rural setting. The warm, caring and friendly atmosphere is apparent as one walks through the front door. It does not take long to understand that EES is a quality school as it provides a setting for students to feel safe and to gain confidence in their ability to meet educational challenges. Staff, parents and the community work together and share a common vision and a desire to meet the individual needs of all students.

Eileen Madson Primary School At Eileen Madson Primary School (EMP), we are grateful to have a school community dedicated to providing a rich learning environment for our primary-aged learners.

Our continued school focus is strengthening literacy skills through quality instruction and early intervention. This year, our goal is to integrate the Mind-Up Program throughout all grades. This program teaches students to self-regulate behaviour to fully engage in their learning. Together as a school community, we will discuss, plan and implement effective strategies that will have a positive impact on student achievement.

The year ahead is filled with exciting opportunities that will connect students to our school and community. The EMP Walk/Run program will start up in September focusing on fitness and fun. Our school garden will be harvested and preparations will begin for our annual Harvest Fest Celebration that is filled with both song and dance. Reading with the Rockies, One to One Reading and our Intergenerational Project continue to connect our students with their community. We look forward to having the hallways and classrooms of EMP filled with eager learners, families and staff. The countdown is on. Welcome back!

J.A. Laird Elementary School At J. Alfred Laird, we recognize that each of our students is important and unique, bringing his/her talents and gifts to our school. This makes our school an amazing and diverse place and, as educators, we strive to acknowledge each of our students and what each has to contribute. We believe in providing children with opportunities to develop skills, knowledge and understanding through arts, culture, athletics and academics, and have a lovely school facility in which to do so along with a dedicated, professional and caring staff.

This year we will continue to offer our hockey program (in affiliation with Hockey Canada), which provides enhanced fitness and training opportunities both on and off ice, and is available to interested students in Grades 5 to 7, regardless of previous hockey or skating training. We are especially excited to be working with Art Starts as an Arts Infusion Champion school. For the next two years, we will work to develop visual arts skills and abilities (sketching, drawing, painting) with students and with staff in order to infuse visual arts into both our teaching practice and the ways students represent their knowledge and understanding. We look forward to a year of seeing the world in new ways!

We are a true neighbourhood school where each student bikes, skateboards, roller blades, scooters or walks to school under the watchful eye of neighbours, family and friends on a block surrounded by trees and mountains.

MMES boasts playing grounds like no other, with the serene, natural habitat of wild flowers and trees as well as the usual schoolground fare. We welcome our new Kindergarten students and other new students and their families. We know you will delight in getting to know the staff and making friends with the close, supportive parents and kind, enthusiastic students who make for the happy, inclusive learning place we are known for. With our famously small class sizes, ongoing collaborative teaching opportunities and high regard for individual learning styles, the staff is committed to developing strategies that put each and every student on a path to meeting his or her full potential and personal best.

Literacy continues to be our overarching focus. As well, it is our mission for each student to feel connected to, and included in, the school community. The first day of school is an exciting time! We know that students will have a productive, enjoyable year. Welcome back!

This year our school success plan will involve all our usual activities: Smart Learning, Power of Ten Math, Technology use with Smart Boards and the Epson Interactive Unit ELP-IU01s. The main focus will be on Literacy Support in all grades, keying in on support and identifying vulnerabilities in our primary students. Early identification and intervention support research indicates that implementing this strategy in the primary grades increases student achievement and success prior to attending high school. We also will be utilizing our new virtual lab, our growing digital book collection, and the continued use of iPads as intervention devices in support of students. The Read Naturally program will continue as one of our main intervention strategies.

Both of our exciting Intensive French and Enhanced French classes will swing back into action! We have also introduced a Leadership program with our Grade 7 class. All of this in addition to our new clubs/activities and usual activities. We will continue with our expanded Art Programs, Outdoor Education programs and increased involvement in community activities. We are looking forward to seeing everyone return from a healthy and happy summer vacation.

Open Doors School (Invermere Alternate) Open Doors is the senior alternate program for David Thompson Secondary School. Students are 15 years or older. The program offers a flexible timetable to accommodate students’ work and/or family concerns.

Much of the curriculum is modularized but some courses are taught in a small group setting. Students do the same courses as DTSS students and write the same Provincial Exams. Students interested in the program should be self-directed and self-motivated. Students may explore the option of attending Open Doors either by visiting the campus directly or by meeting with a counsellor or administrator at David Thompson Secondary School.

Exploring the quiet twin to the south: Columbia Lake Watershed Wanderings

By Kirsten Harma Pioneer Columnist In my work for the Lake Windermere Ambassadors, I have clearly been focused on Lake Windermere. Until recently, I had not given much thought to its nearly twin lake to the south — Columbia Lake. Columbia Lake is slightly shorter (13.6 kilometres long compared to Windermere’s 17), and shallower (2.9 metre average in depth compared to Windermere’s 3.4 metres), but the human influences are what are perceived as the differences by local residents. Ironically, those are the same influences that might actually mean we have more in common than we think.

During a July 22nd meeting* of Columbia Lake residents, I learned that those dwelling on Columbia Lake’s shores view Windermere as its rowdier, more populated cousin.

Columbia Lake remains quieter for some important reasons. With Crown land and the newly protected Lot 48 to the east and the railroad to the west, Columbia Lake has not been subject to the same development pressures as Windermere. The limited boat launch access also contributes to its more subdued nature.

Yet locals are not free from worry about the future of their lake. In the July 22nd meeting, residents expressed concern about shoreline erosion, water pollution, increased motorized use and weed growth, to name just a few.

They also recognized that the future of their lake is not just affected by what happens in and on the lake itself. One participant worried that decreasing input of water from melting glaciers over time would negatively affect the lake levels.

Participants were inspired to address some of their concerns after a presentation by Gerald Thom of the Cowichan Lake and River Stewardship Society.

“It doesn’t take a lot of work to start caring for your lake,” said Mr. Thom. “Gather some e-mails, meet a couple of time a year to have a discussion, and start monitoring water quality using some easy tests like temperature and clarity. These will give you critical data for how your lake is changing over time.”

Mr. Thom’s presentation of these simple tools motivated the meeting participants to take up the challenge and work to become lake stewards. “Let’s form a lake roundtable” was the identified “next step” by many participants.

One participant noted at the meeting’s close that she saw two different kinds of challenges facing their lake.

“There are definitely things we can do right here on our lake, but there are issues that are bigger than what a small group of individuals can address. I see those as things like the impact of the railroad on the lake, and what future land use will be on Crown land.”

Indeed, addressing these “bigger” scale issues will require complex solutions. Addressing these challenges requires communication and co-ordination across sectors and between multiple levels of government. Communities elsewhere are beginning to do just that through new types of conversations and collaborations. On Vancouver Island, the Cowichan Watershed Board meets bi-monthly to find ways to encourage wise water management practices. Along the Coquitlam River (Lower Mainland), everyone who has a “stake” in the future of their watershed is invited to a “roundtable” to meet and share ideas for how to maintain and restore their waterways.

Critically, before that work can even begin to take place, it is necessary to have an enthusiastic group of people interested in looking after their own backyard.

I saw such a spark of enthusiasm among the residents of the shores of Columbia Lake, matching that of their neighbours to the north. *Author’s note: This meeting was hosted by the Lake Windermere Ambassadors. It was part of a series of workshops designed to engage people in a community-wide conversation about our shared watershed.

NOTICE OF COUNCIL INITIATIVE MERGED WATER LOCAL SERVICE AREA BYLAW 150, 2013 Notice of a Council Initiative (subject to petition against) process is given to the property owners of the Merged Water Service Area (created under Bylaw 149, 2013) for the construction of a Reservoir and upgrade to the water distribution system under loan authorization Bylaw 150, 2013 to borrow a maximum of two million three hundred thousand ($2,300,000) dollars. A Towns for Tomorrow and Gas Tax Grant of $400,000 will be applied to the project to reduce the cost from $2,700,000 to $2,300,000 dollars.

Notice is hereby given pursuant to the provisions of section 217 of the Community Charter that the Council of the Village of Canal Flats wishes to borrow up to a maximum amount of $2,300,000 dollars for the following projects: Merged Water Local Service Area for the construction of a Reservoir and water distribution system.

Village of Canal Flats Council, on July 30th , 2013, gave three readings to the “Merged Water Local Service Area Loan Authorization Bylaw 150, 2013” proposing to borrow, by way of debenture, a sum not exceeding $2,300,000 and is repayable not later than thirty (30) years from the date of issue of such debentures. It is estimated that the annual parcel tax will be $275 for this debenture. Only those parcels of land within the Merged Water Local Service Area that are deemed serviceable will be charged the water parcel tax. Details of the proposed works may be viewed during regular business hours at the Municipal Office at 8866 Grainger Road, Canal Flats, BC or on the website at www.canalflats.com.

Property response forms for this Council Initiative are available to the owners of properties of the Merged Water Local Service Area as per the attached map.

Only qualified owners who are opposed to the loan need sign the petition response forms. If 2 or more persons are owners of land, they must be considered as one owner only and are only entitled to petition if a majority of them concur. Qualified owners who are in favour of this loan do not have to sign or submit any documents.

Unless petitions are signed by at least fifty percent (50%) of the property owners representing at least fifty (50%) percent of the assessed value of land and improvements and submitted to the Village of Canal Flats at Box 159, 8866 Grainger Road, Canal Flats, BC V0B 1B0, petitioning the Village Council NOT to proceed, Village Council may adopt this loan authorization bylaw within 30 days after notice has been given.

The deadline for receipt of the signed owner’s opposition form to the Village of Canal Flats Municipal office is 4:30 p.m. on Monday September 30, 2013.

Fairmont resort welcomes new chef

By Steve Hubrecht Pioneer Staff A new executive chef is cooking up a storm at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort.

Martin Collis has been a professional chef for more than 25 years and finds himself in the Columbia Valley partly because of the lure of the mountains and partly because what was supposed to be a half-year or so of stint of time-off in Canada has turned into a permanent stay.

“It’s been really interesting (here in Fairmont).

Business has been good,” he said. “There’s been a bit of a learning curve, since I’m used to living and working in cities.”

Mr. Collis grew up in England, training and working in kitchens in London and France, helping them win awards as he did. For a while he did freelance chef consulting work.

“I’d go to places that were having issues and help put them back on track,” he said.

He met his Canadian-born wife, who is also a professional chef, in Europe, but about six or seven years ago the couple decided to spend a few months off in Canada. They’re still here.

The couple and their young family have spent most

of the last several years in Stratford, Ontario — the part of Canada where Mrs. Collis is originally from and the site of the renowned Stratford Festival.

“We quite enjoyed Stratford,” said Mr. Collis.

“Food and theatre are really huge there.”

Mrs. Collis worked as a chef for the festival in Stratford and Mr. Collis was the chef at the city’s Old English Parlour restaurant.

But the couple has always had thoughts of moving to the mountains in the western part of the country and when Mr. Collis saw the opening at Fairmont, the family pounced.

“It was too good an option to turn down,” he said.

“We’d always been interested in B.C. just because of the scenery.”

The new chef has been here for two months and said that with the resort’s recent restructuring — a new chair and new management — he feels he made the right choice.

“It’s a good time to join the company, so we decided to uproot and move,” said Mr. Collis.

The chef ’s family is quickly warming to the Upper Columbia Valley, with kids loving swimming in the lake, a fly fishing lesson last week and plans to go kayaking sometime soon.

“I want to say a really big thank-you to everybody, I can’t believe how everybody’s come together to help,” he said.

Since the accident, Ryan said he’s been using Facebook more than ever to communicate with supporters.

“I’ve been on it more over the last four days than I have in the past five years, saying thank you and getting back to everyone.”

As the Karls’ endure the healing process, the family faces medical expenses during an extended period of time off work. The webpage was organized by another family friend, Breanne Rybchinksi, and works as a user-friendly online donation tool.

“We appreciate all the love and concern from our community and will be focusing on healing in the upcoming weeks ahead,” Jenn wrote in an email to The Pioneer.

“From the bottom of my heart, thank you to everyone who helped save Mama Jenn,” said Ryan.

“Jenn’s nickname is Mama Jenn because she’s so used to taking care of people.”

DON BARRETT

July 9th, 1953 - August 16th, 2013 Born Donald Anthony Barrett to Roy and Ina Barrett. Vivian and Connie finally got the little brother they always wanted. Don spent a lot of time doing things with his Dad, but he and his Mom stayed close to the end.

He met the love of his life, Norma Young at Munson’s Corner in Wilmer at the age of 9. It was love at first sight. They were later married on November 12, 1971. They spent the next 42 years together. They had a daughter Rhonda. And even though they may not have always seen eye-to-eye, they loved each other very much. He had two Grandkids Caitlyn and Jacob who were his pride and joy, as well as many nieces and nephews who meant the world to him.

He started work at a very young age for Mrs. Graham, taking care of her many sheep. He graduated from that to working at the Canal Flats Mill. From there he went on to one of his many loves, driving truck for Westroc. When his back began to bother him, he went to work at Napa for the next 18 years where he learned how to paint cars and sell parts.

His customers classified him as a Car Doctor. He also got to visit with everyone who came in - another love of his. When Napa sold, he went back to his job as a truck driver., working for Butch Bishop and on call for the Department of Highways. He would always lend a helping hand to whoever asked. He will always be remembered for his wheeling and dealing and always giving his opinion- right or wrong. But in his case, ALWAYS RIGHT! Don is survived by: Wife Norma Barrett; Daughter Rhonda Franzen; Granddaughter Caitlyn Franzen; Grandson Jake Franzen;, Mother Ina Barrett; Sister Connie Welch (Keith), Sister Vivian Young (Harold), brother Joe Sayer (Shelley); many nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews. Predeceased by Father Roy Barrett, Sister-in-law Bev Knott.

A celebration of life took place

SPICY CRAB STUFFED CUCUMBER CUPS

3 Long English Cucumbers ¼ cup Sour Cream ¼ cup Cream Cheese, softened ¾ cup Crab Meat, squeeze dry

1 teaspoon Tabasco 1 teaspoon Brown Mustard Salt and Pepper to taste 1 tablespoon Green Onion, minced

Partially peel the cucumbers and cut into 2 inch slices.

Using a melon baller, scoop out most of the inside leaving bottom intact.

In bowl, mix sour cream and cheese until blended.

Add remaining ingredients and stir well.

Fill each cucumber cup with dip.

Refrigerate up to 2 hours and serve. Enjoy!

Columbia Valley RCMP recommended to the Crown charges of mischief be pursued against Mr. Richardson and one other camp member stemming from the August 10th incident.

According to Mr. Harrison, the developers said the short timeline between serving notice to the checkpoint group and applying for the injunction was because they want to start summer skiing on the Farnham Glacier immediately and the camp is preventing this.

Logging companies in B.C. have often successfully used injunctions to remove camps, checkpoints and blockades, but this case is much different because logging companies usually have clear legal cutting rights allowing them to do the work they want to, according to Mr. Harrison.

He believes the checkpoint group will argue in the hearing that, according to the master development agreement between Glacier Resorts Ltd. and the province, the developers are not allowed to alter Farnham Glacier for commercial purposes.

Mr. Harrison said he wouldn’t be surprised if the injunction application is not settled on August 26th and there are more hearings.

“There’s a disagreement on the facts of the case, so we’ll probably have to go deeper into the evidence,” he said. “More likely than not, it will be unresolved.”

Jumbo Glacier Mountain Resort Municipality mayor Greg Deck could not be reached for comment on the injunction, but when previously contacted regarding the checkpoint group, Mr. Deck said the municipality does not have a role in the matter since it is the province’s job to enforce the master development agreement.

Killer Rollbots to host clothing swap

By Dan Walton Pioneer Staff To prevent Invermere’s roller derby team, the Killer Robots, from suffering a financial malfunction, the team will be hosting a clothing swap at the Arrowhead Brewing Company on the evening of Sunday, August 25th.

“Women drop off clothes, we sort it, then everyone pays $10 to get in, but can take home as much

clothing as they want,” Killer Robot Jess DeGroot told The Pioneer. “Items at the clothing swap is stuff that women have been hanging onto in their closets that they don’t necessarily wear anymore, but is too nice to give away to the second-hand store.”

Clothing items will include contemporary, modern pieces that are still in very good shape, she said.

Adult women of all shapes and sizes are invited to the swap. Attendees are asked to arrive at the brewery around 6 p.m. with any clothing they’d like to donate

(though it’s not a requirement), and enjoy growlers of beer, appies, jewelry from Hettie van Riesen and Alex Naubert, and good company at Arrowhead. Guests will also be able to buy team merchandise from the Rollbots.

This Sunday, August 25th, ladies in the valley will have the opportunity to recycle their clothing and their growler bottles at the same time, all in support of the Invermere Killer Robots.

Christ makes church cool

By Associate Pastor Rev. David Morton St. Peter’s Lutheran Mission of Invermere Col. Chris Hadfield, the Canadian astronaut, is “the man who made space cool again!,” reads the headline from the June 3rd edition of Maclean’s magazine. His celebrity is sure: during his six-month stay aboard the International Space Station, he went from 20,000 Twitter followers to almost a million. As of May 21st, his cover of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” had well over 14,000,000 views.

Neither statistics nor celebrity make something or someone “cool.” No, it was how he made space accessible to all people, everywhere, which made space cool again. Using simple experiments, educational but humorous video clips, and even concerts, what was once “over everyone’s head,” outer space, was suddenly understandable, practical and most importantly, fun. He brought down to earth what up until recently had been deemed inaccessible.

Could Christianity ever be made that cool? Let’s start with Christianity’s book. Evidence from the Guinness Book of World Records suggests the Bible is the coolest book on Earth: “the Bible is the world’s best-selling and most widely distributed book. [Recent estimates]

of the Bible Society concluded that more than 5 billion copies were printed between 1815 and 1975. By the end of 1995, combined global sales…exceeded 17.75 million copies, and the whole Bible had been translated into 349 languages; 2,123 languages have at least one book of the Bible in that language.”

Yet, does all this make the Bible cool?

I believe that Jesus Christ is cool, and I am not alone in this. Much of the world finds Christ cool too; Christianity remains the largest and fastest growing religion in the world, followed closely by Islam. I think that what Col. Hadfield did for the space program, Jesus did for people in His time and continues to do today. Jesus made God and His kingdom accessible for anyone and everyone who would believe in Him. Jesus used short, educational but humorous anecdotes to teach. What was deemed by His peers to be “over everyone’s head,” Jesus brought down to earth, in Himself. God was suddenly knowable, approachable and even fun. Through His death on the cross, Jesus Christ demonstrated forgiveness. He opened the way for anyone and everyone to have access to the very presence of God. This to me is why church, Christianity, remains cool.

Jesus’ words do not grow dusty; they continue to enliven, humble, forgive and console, even now. I encourage you to go to church to meet the coolest person who has ever lived.
