Invermere one puff closer to a proposed cannabis shop

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Invermere is one puff closer to becoming home to a recreational cannabis store.

Blooming World Cannabis passed a provincial review so their application is now with the District Of Invermere for approval.

At their meeting on Tuesday, December 11th, council opted to hold a public hearing where community members will be welcome to share their thoughts on the proposed shop. The hearing is tentatively scheduled for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 9th at council chambers.

Chris Prosser, the District’s chief administrative officer, said the hearing will be structured to allow for a conversation to take place. Blooming World Cannabis will have the opportunity to give a presentation and then respond to questions from the public.

Mayor Al Miller said the public hearing will “keep it totally open, transparent” and give everyone the opportunity to speak.

“This is a discussion and a decision for the whole community,” added councillor Gerry Taft. “Anyone and everyone should be attending.”

Councillor Ute Juras said recreational cannabis is so new that it can seem like “such a big, scary thing” and that “opposition is sometimes born out of ignorance.”

Shawn Wernig, one of the owners behind Blooming World Cannabis, said, “it’s important that we assuage those fears.”

One property owner at Parkside Place, the development where Mr. Wernig would like to open shop, told council she was concerned about recreational cannabis which has been like the “wild west” since it was legalized on October 20th.

In addition to sharing at the public hearing, Mr. Wernig and his co-owner Olivier Hogue will hold a gathering for Parkside Place residents and owners as well as an open house for the general public.

Following the hearing, council will decide whether or not to support the application. If council is in favour, the provincial Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch will then decide whether to issue a license for the shop.

Ten year development plan for Columbia Valley tourism

Emilie Cayer-Huard is an industry and destination development specialist with Kootenay Rockies Tourism. Ms. Cayer-Huard reported there was good engagement in the Valley on this project, and there is a lot of positive growth in Valley tourism initiatives already.

“There’s been great momentum in developing the Valley as a prime destination,” she said.

Suzanne Denbak was the Destination BC facilitator for the Columbia Valley, and she presented the Valley tourism plan at the meeting.

“Tonight really is a milestone to be able to come back to you and share,” Ms. Denback said. She highlighted the Valley’s key strengths, including the stunning scenery, great tourism infrastructure already in place, a growing depth of arts, culture and First Nations experiences, and authentic towns that stay true to themselves. Challenges she listed include transportation and access, continued need for Valley-wide collaboration, year-round staffing issues and the need to protect the environment.

“The environment, and protection of the environment, was important to you as values you hold dear to yourselves,” Ms. Denbak commented.

Tourism in the Columbia Valley is an eclectic bag filled with experiences like hot springs, zip lines, and golf courses, accommodations ranging from backcountry camping to high-scale hotels, businesses selling everything from pens to paddle boards, and restaurants ranging from greasy spoons to gourmet dining.

But collectively, the tourism industry in the Valley wants to offer a unified front to tourists coming to the area. Through support by Destination British Columbia’s Kootenay Rockies division, the Valley underwent a series of discussions over the past year and a half to come up with a deliberate Valley-wide strategy, centred around the Valley’s vision: ‘The Columbia Valley is known as a place to unwind and relax, where travellers, keen to discover adventure, discover themselves.’

Through in-person sessions in April and June 2017, plus webinars and online surveys, Kootenay Rockies tourism assessed what tourism stakeholders would like to see happen in the Valley in regards to tourism over the next 10 years. That data was collected and presented in a meeting Monday, December 10th. About 50 people – representing large and small businesses, nonprofit groups and government – came to hear the draft development plan.

This past week, December 10th through December 16th, the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 49 calls for service. The following are some of the more notable files our officers responded to: • On Monday, December 10th at 5:30 a.m., the Columbia Valley Fire Department, BC Ambulance Service and RCMP responded to a garage fire on Noltner Road in Windermere. The homeowner awoke to find her detached garage fully engulfed in flames. There were no injuries, however, the garage was completely destroyed. The Columbia Valley Fire Department was able to prevent the fire from spreading to the nearby home. The cause of the fire remains under investigation but it is not considered to be suspicious.

• On Monday, December 10th at about 3:30 p.m., police, fire and ambulance responded to a two-vehicle

collision at the intersection of 7th Avenue and 13th Street in Invermere. A northbound Volkswagen Rabbit was attempting to make a lefthand turn onto 13th Street and collided with a southbound Kia Rio. The driver and passenger of the Kia were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the Volkswagen was issued a violation ticket for failing to yield on a left turn. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

• On Wednesday, December 12th at 6 p.m., RCMP received a report of a single vehicle rollover on Columbia Road in Edgewater. The driver of a white Chevrolet Equinox failed to negotiate a curve in the road and ended up rolling the vehicle onto its side. The driver was not injured.

• Saturday, On December 15th at 3:30 a.m., a highway maintenance operator discovered a grey Hyundai Elantra in the ditch on Toby Creek Road near Invermere but could not locate the driver. The responding officer spoke to the driver at his residence who indicated he swerved for a deer and ended up in the ditch. The driver was not seriously injured.

Count the birds on Boxing Day Submitted The Lake Windermere District Christmas Bird Count is coming up once more. Our local count takes place on Wednesday, December 26th, and is conducted in a 24 kilometre diameter circle, centred on Wilmer.

The count happens over the entire 24 hours, and people can participate on foot or vehicle, or by counting birds at their feeder.

In its 119th year, the National Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count is a citizen science project that takes place in over 2,000 localities all over the western hemisphere between December 14th and January 5th. The information gathered forms one of the world’s largest collection of wildlife survey data. The results are used regularly by scientists and naturalists to assess the population trends and distribution of birds.

Holiday spirit in the air A history of the annual Wilmer Christmas Eve fireworks

Submitted by Harmony Hemmelgarn It’s that time of year when pumpkin spice is replaced with apple spice and Christmas lights start to sparkle here and there. The time of year for giving back and cherishing relationships closest to you. The hustle and bustle of the holidays has yet to start for most, but in my family home, holiday planning has already begun with the Wilmer Christmas Eve fireworks show preparation underway. For those of you who are familiar, you are aware of this family tradition that has flourished into a festive community event. The show is set in Wilmer on Christmas Eve, against a backdrop of beautifully decorated homes. Staged with bonfires, holiday music, and hot chocolate, it is truly a magical holiday event.

The tradition started on Christmas Eve 15 years ago, organized by my dad, Pat Hemmelgarn, attended by a few family members in memory of my brother Tyral. The fireworks were a way to bring us together for remembrance and appreciation. In years to follow, residents of Wilmer started donating in the spirit of the community and the holidays. The event was moved into town for all to see and has evolved into a community tradition! Each year, starting November 1st my dad . . . ‘Ten’ from 3 presented, include increasing shoulder season visitation, increasing the length of stay, providing yearround employment for tourism staff, and to become the most highly recommended destination in BC. With the “wealth of input” from participants through the goal-setting process, Kootenay Rockies organized the responses into seven overarching themes, including: transportation, supporting the business community, protecting the natural environment, maintaining community character, developing quality amenities and infrastructure, maintaining existing experiences while supporting new ones, and working collaboratively. Within each theme, they have developed target goals. For example, under the theme of protecting the natural environment and managing tourism impacts, area stakeholders want to ensure a recreational land/water management plan is in place, there is sufficient measurement, monitoring and enforcement resources in place, to see a decreasing trend in user conflicts and in users/wildlife conflicts, and to ensure invasive species are prevented and mitigation strategies are in place.

Following Monday’s meeting, a working committee gathered Tuesday, December 11th to come up with some immediate projects to get the ball rolling.

On Christmas Eve, prep is fully underway with my dad and Shawn Murray furiously setting up the fireworks, hot chocolate being prepped and fire wood being prepared for the bonfires.

Then the countdown begins.

I am so proud of my dad’s dedication and time in ensuring this event continues each year. On behalf of my family, we appreciate the residents and businesses who donate; without these funds, the event would not be what it is today. A special thanks to Shawn Murray for his dedication each year in providing his fireworks credentials and assisting Dad with the set up/set off of the amazing light show, also for providing the holiday music beforehand. Thank you to Kootenay Coffee Works for providing the yummy hot chocolate that warms everyone’s tummies and to Local View Printing & Design for donating flyers to advertise the event.

Ms. Cayer-Huard says for residents concerned about a destination development plan, she assures that this is a grassroots initiative, not top-down from the Province.

“That vision is really based on respecting community values and environmental sustainability,” says Ms. Cayer-Huard. “This is for developing tourism towards an agreed-upon vision by local stakeholders.”

The Columbia Valley’s tourism plan is part of a larger provincial initiative to drive tourism to the province. The province was divided into six large areas for regional strategies [we are part of the Kootenay Rockies strategy], further broken down into 20 planning area strategies, organized primarily by natural travel corridors.

“We need to be planning now to avoid over-visitation of the places that we love and cherish as residents of British Columbia and residents of the Columbia Valley,” said Jody Young, senior project advisor for Destination British Columbia at the stakeholder meeting. “We need to be attracting the right visitors for our province and educate them to be good stewards of our land and how to be respectful visitors . . . And looking forward, moving forward with a common vision so we’re providing that best visitor experience possible.”

A cup of good cheer

Check out our first ever Christmas Spirit contest (with photos on page 1, 11, 30, and 31) for fantastic reader submissions depicting the joy and wonder found in this season. While we could only pick one winner, each one was worthy of recognition. And we had so many submissions, we couldn’t even fit them all in. Check out the Pioneer Facebook page for more.

The Valley knows how to celebrate in style this time of year. Check out the Wilmer fireworks (see story on page 5) Christmas Eve for a spectacular show to launch into Christmas. Or head over to Hopkins Harvest this Sunday (see story, page 10), for a winter wonderland event complete with sleigh rides, goodies and even a visit from Santa Claus. For a non-organized activity, take a drive to see Christmas lights (be sure to head to Wilmer and Dry Gultch for that outing!).

Radium fire hall’s annual Christmas party last Sunday (see page 2) brings out the spirit of celebration in everyone who attends, especially as they view the hall and fire truck all decked out. Other events, such as the Senior Singalong (see photos page 36) bring joy to people who might not get out to other events as often.

While Christmas brings out the best in most of us, for Valley residents, this goodwill extends to people in need all year. A fundraiser event for Rolf Heer (see story, page 8), is evidence of the Valley spirit alive and well. Be sure to buy your tickets and come support this iconic Radium resident. Or look to the Columbia Valley Community Foundation’s list of recipients for 2018 (page 34), showing the great amounts of good that can be done because of charitable giving. What a testament to community that is.

If you’re more of a homebody as winter digs in, check out the Radium and Invermere library’s suggestions on good reads for the holiday season (see story, page 16).

So grab a friend to head to an event, grab a book and a cozy blanket, or just grab some downtime this season.

Drink up the spirit of the season, celebrate with loved ones near and far. If you don’t have loved ones, find yourself some community here. Reach out, call someone up, make a new connection. And be of good cheer.

Blooming into business Dear Editor: We’d like to introduce ourselves. We are Blooming World Cannabis, a locally owned cannabis retail store currently in the process of gaining approvals and licensing to open in one the commercial units along 7th Avenue in Parkside Place (see story, page 3).

This week marks an important milestone for Blooming World, having recently received a Fit and Proper approval from the Federal and Provincial governments to begin the municipal approval process.

At the Council Meeting on Tuesday, December 11th, it came to our attention that there is quite a lot of confusion about cannabis legalization, cannabis retail stores, and our store in particular. We’ve been pretty quiet up until this point. It was not our intention to hide from the spotlight; we simply

wanted to avoid inconveniencing people on a ‘what if ’, (and getting our hopes up, honestly) prior to meeting this first milestone.

We want to address Invermere, but more specifically the owners and tenants of Parkside Place directly. We know a store like ours affects you - and we want to be sure you get the facts, not just the rumours. The legalization and private sale of Cannabis is an entirely new thing in Canada, and there’s bound to be a lot of questions and concerns - some relating to legalization in general, and others to our store in particular.

We plan on inviting you to a private open house for tenants and owners, to shake hands and help address your concerns. We plan on having a public open house forum in the new year. Stay tuned!

Teachers of the forest Dear Editor: Over 160 years ago, Henry David Thoreau wrote: “We need the tonic of wilderness... We can never have enough of nature.” I certainly didn’t know about Thoreau when I was growing up, and neither did my dad, but he taught me to love the outdoors and all that was in it. And now I’m learning that a walk in the woods has become “forest bathing” and to be properly “cleansed,” it’s essential to have a well educated guide –PhD preferably.

I don’t want to denigrate the value of an education, having spent too many hours in quest of my own degrees, but why, all of a sudden, has it become necessary to teach people about the benefits of the outdoors like it was an algebra class? Granted, our population has become more familiar with wildlife scenes on a screen than in the forest. And there are probably city dwellers that have never seen a live tree.

In addition, there is no question that a guided walk can be more enjoyable than going it alone. And it gives me great satisfaction to think that the experiences of many visitors to Kootenay National Park were made more memorable because they followed me up a trail. Of course, I wanted them to learn to appreciate nature, but not in any dry clinical way. It makes no

sense to just recite the scientific name of a flower. How many people are going to remember that? But a story about Freddy Fungus taking a “lichen” to Alice Algae even made the kid’s ears light up. One of the highlights of my park years was when a visitor from Germany said to me, “I don’t know whether to believe you or not,” but her smile was dazzling.

Of course, we live in strange times.

Do you ever wonder about the intelligence of the 40+ year old, with his baseball cap turned backwards while wearing sunglasses? Or how about the smartly coifed female with pretty blouse and fancy shoes wearing torn jeans? It’s hard for me to refrain from extending a dollar for her “clothing fund.” Oh, and then we have the individuals who wear toques over their ears even on the hottest days. That is actually supposed to be “cool,” because some hot shot performer does the same.

Come to think of it, maybe there are a lot of people that really do need someone to teach them that the beauty of our forested mountains with the myriad wildflowers and assortment of wild creatures is something to be savored and embraced.

And that the mountains can actually bring peace to the people.

From wizard to phoenix Community helps wizard rise from the ashes

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com Five days after the fire Five days after fire consumed Rolf Heer’s Home Of A Thousand Faces where the Radium woodcarver lived and worked, he bought fuel for his chainsaw.

Never mind that his property was a pile of charred rubble after the November 23rd fire and that he was living in a trailer with a portable toilet set up outside, Mr. Heer was ready to get back to business.

While he said he had been heartbroken for the first two days after the fire, his spirits were as high as ever as he smoked and shared about his plans. Maybe he would set up a teepee on his land, he said, where he would carve more of the wooden wizard faces he loves.

Mr. Heer, who is terminally ill with prostate and bone cancer, also had positive health news to share: his new medication had temporarily relieved his pain.

Three weeks after the fire On Friday, December 14th, three weeks after the fire, Mr. Heer sleeps in his trailer while one of his friends climbs a ladder to secure tarps to a set of poles for a makeshift teepee.

“It’s nice for all the people to try to help me,” Mr. Heer said earlier in the afternoon. “It’s always nice to have a lot of good friends.”

His home was uninsured. In addition to destroying his property, he said the fire also consumed tens of thousands of dollars he had kept in cash.

“I’m sure I’ll get back on my feet again,” he said.

Mr. Heer is grateful for those who are offering their support and is humbled to accept it.

“I need only a house,” he said. “That’s all I want. A shack, something small just to live in.”

Mr. Heer intends to leave his property to the community, but the organization he has chosen is currently not prepared to share publicly about potential arrangements.

Fundraising efforts Dustin Gottinger was passing by as Mr. Heer’s home went up in flames. Trained in first aid and used to being helpful, he said he felt guilty watching the fire and knowing that “there was nothing I could do in that moment.”

Mr. Gottinger, who was born and raised in the Valley, hasn’t known Radium without the woodcarving wizard.

“Rolf ’s always been there,” he said. “It was a part of everyone’s life that was up in flames.”

Mr. Gottinger didn’t want sadness to be the only thing the fire left behind so he started The Rolf Heer Fundraiser to “rally support in all shapes and forms” for Mr. Heer and give the community a means to help.

“No matter what circumstances, you can always shine a positive light on it,” he said.

At first Mr. Gottinger’s hopes were so modest that he said: “I would have been happy if we raised enough money to get him a bottle of vodka.”

To date the fundraiser has collected $877, well over

the cost of a bottle of liquor, and Mr. Gottinger has upped his goals. He would like to see enough money raised to get Mr. Heer a home and help him return to carving.

Mr. Gottinger has donation boxes at more than 20 Valley businesses. Supporters can also make donations directly to The Rolf Heer Fundraiser at Kootenay Savings Credit Union. (The fundraiser isn’t collecting donations online in order to assure donors of its legitimacy.)

The Wizard Of Radium Benefit For Rolf Community members are also coming together to hold a benefit with proceeds going to The Rolf Heer Fundraiser.

The Wizard Of Radium Benefit For Rolf will take place at the Radium Hot Springs Centre at 7 p.m. on Saturday, December 29th.

“It’s gonna be a good party,” said organizer Pat Hess.

“Wear your favourite wizard hat.”

At least six bands will be playing and there will be silent and live auctions. “(Rolf ) is planning to do a couple of new carvings for the auction,” he said.

A chainsaw and a few salvaged pieces that survived the fire will also go home with the highest bidders.

Tickets are $25 and are on sale at the Radium Mountainside Market, Avenue in Invermere, and Treasures in the Wind in Windermere.

Mr. Gottinger laughed as he recalled attending one of Mr. Heer’s legendary Halloween parties.

“Everyone’s always had a good time at Rolf ’s,” he said. “The benefit is going to be a crazy awesome time.”

Weekly Whiteway Report Due to the warm weather we’ve been experiencing lately, the Lake Windermere Whiteway will unfortunately not be open for Christmas.

While many of us have become accustomed to the Whiteway being open for the holidays, we have experienced years, such as 2015, where we did not see it open until the first week of January.

While earlier this month the ice was thick enough to skate on in most areas, the weather has been significantly warmer since, and we suggest being very cautious of using the ice before we experience colder temperatures. The ice is not safe to use if it is under 4 inches deep. The conditions at Lake Lillian are similar, and you should wait for colder weather before using the ice there too.

While the Whiteway has not opened yet, season passes are currently being sold online (https://bit.ly/2rG-

wuDM) and at Crazy Soles. If you have already ordered a pass, they are also currently availa b l e for pick up at Crazy Soles.

On Sunday, January 6th, the Toby Creek Nordic Ski Club (TCNSC) will be hosting the Banff Mountain Film Festival at the Columbia Valley Centre. Christmas Star shopping spree

Unfortunately Alex was unavailable on Monday afternoon so executive director Susan Clovechok allowed his brother Zach and spouse Kirsta Wolkowski (and daughter Skylar) to stand in for Alex.

The couple began their spree at Red Apple to pick up some toys to be wrapped and placed under the tree. As winners only have an hour of in-store shopping at participating businesses to complete the spree, Zach and Kirsta made sure to spend time pre-shopping before the 1 p.m. start.

Shopping at Red Apple was followed by visits to Summit Footwear, Pharmasave, Sobeys, Canadian Tire and Home Hardware with the couple spending the last of the $750 first prize at the Windermere Valley Golf Course.

When asked about the experience of spending $750 in less than an hour, Kirsta said, “It was amazing. We’re very grateful to pick up some much-needed presents and necessities before Christmas. It will really take a load off this year.”

Radium’s “sassy library director retires

By Dauna Ditson reporter@columbiavalleypioneer.com The library was only a cubbyhole when Jane Jones arrived in Radium 16 years ago. It had a typewriter, a card-catalogue system and a desk, she recalled with mirth.

Ron Verboom, who was the library’s council representative, also laughed when he remembered the tiny space. At about 10 feet by 10 feet, the books could only be shelved along two walls since a window took up the third wall and the door occupied the last, he said.

The library moved from the cubbyhole to the Radium Plaza and later, in 2018, took up residence in the brand new Radium Hot Springs Centre.

Mr. Verboom said Ms. Jones deserves credit for expanding the library.

“June was an integral part of the growth of the library,” he said. “She was bringing more and more people into the library.”

Councillor Mike Gray called Ms. Jones “the sassy lady who comes out and busts my chops.”

Far from being a stereotypical librarian who is endlessly telling patrons to pipe down, he said her “fun, bubbly personality” warmed the library and turned it into a welcoming place and popular hangout spot.

“When you break the mould of what a librarian is, you break the mould of what a library is,” he said.

Ms. Jones would agree.

“The attitude in the library is not a library attitude,” she said at her retirement party on Friday, December 14th. “It’s a friendly visiting place for the public... It’s not just a place for books. It’s a place for people. You always feel very welcome.”

Photo by Dauna Ditson people who gathered to wish her well, Ms. Jones said: “As I look around I see volunteer, volunteer, volunteer, volunteer.”

One of those volunteers, Phyllis Jackson, gave Ms. Jones a big hug.

“The children just love her – like the rest of us do,” she said.

Ms. Jones said the feeling is mutual and that she’s never met such friendly people as those who walk through through the library’s doors.

The highlights of 16 years leading story times, ordering books, arranging book drives, coordinating volunteers and moving into bigger and better spaces are the relationships she made along the way and “seeing all my little ones growing up and going to university.”

New library director Jacqueline Wagner said she’s grateful to Ms. Jones for her example.

“I’m hoping to emulate how she interacts with people,” Ms. Wagner said.

“It’s been wonderful to have Jane as my mentor.”

Minor Hockey Minute Windermere Valley Minor Hockey The Windermere Valley Senior girls won their home tournament. The final game was a battle to the finish with the local girls beating Canmore 4-3 in a real nail biter. It was tied 3-3 late in the third when Natasha Barsby scored the winning goal. They had teams from Canmore, Okotoks, Calgary, Kalispell, Montana and Moscow, Idaho.

where the girls had an amazing game with Kya Chisholm scoring four goals, winning 6-1. This win put us into the final against Canmore. All the girls played absolutely amazing and entertained the home crowd with great hockey and some good dancing on the bench and the ice.

The PeeWee A team travelled to Marysville where they played Kimberley. Kimberley is a powerful team but the team played them much better this time in a losing cause.

This improvement in play shows that the local team can match up to Kimberley with consistent effort.

Noel novels for holiday season

By Breanne Massey Special to the Pioneer A longtime Icelandic Christmas tradition, dating back to about 1944, has gained popularity in recent times on a global scale.

The beloved practice was born after the Second World War when paper was one of the few commodities being rationed, so the Icelandic community resorted to sharing their love of reading with their friends and family.

As a result, the gift of giving books has increased literacy rates across the nation and has prompted some Icelandic folks to identify as self-proclaimed “Book-aholics.”

According to a recent report in the Reykjavik Grapevine, Bifröst University has concluded that 50 per cent of Icelanders read more than eight books per year.

Today, a list of popular books is published and distributed throughout the Icelandic nation preceding the holidays so those in the habit of practising this tradition may stay in, curl up with their favourite books on December 24th with a warm mug of hot cocoa.

And, as any good trend does, the gift of giving books has reached the corners of the Columbia Valley.

Radium Public Library recommends festive books When asked what book is her favourite book during the Christmas holidays, Jacqueline Wagner, library director for the Radium Hot Springs Public Library, had no hesitations.

“A Charlie Brown Christmas by Charles M. Schultz,” she replied. “This tale is a timeless holiday classic for people of any age. Even though the story centres around young children, it plays on adult emotions and addresses issues with materialism during the holiday season.

Charles M. Schultz brings the magic of Christmas to life in this story, and explores the true meaning of Christmas.”

But there are some holiday classics that have stood the test of time for youngsters. I feel like I need something lighter around the holidays sometimes because life is just so busy during December!

Here’s the summary from GoodReads (feel free to take it or leave it): Katherine O’Connor often spends her days at a cozy café on Blossom Street in Seattle—where she writes Christmas letters for other people. She’s good at making their everyday lives sound more interesting. More humorous. More dramatic.

But for Dr. Wynn Jeffries, who also frequents the café, Christmas means lies and deception. In fact, the renowned child psychologist recommends that parents “bury Santa under the sleigh.” Katherine, however, feels that his parenting philosophy is one big mistake—at least, based on her five-year-old twin nieces, who are being raised according to his “Free Child” methods.

Reuse Comes Before Recycle

Paper based wrapping paper can be recycled in any of the yellow bins in the East Kootenay and the curbside recycling program in Invermere. From cards and envelopes to wrapping and tissue paper, please recycle as much as possible.

The yellow bins in the RDEK and curbside program in Invermere take the following:

Electronics are often a hot holiday gift item.

Old electronics that are still in good working condition can be taken to an RDEK Reuse Centre; however, if they’re no longer working, they may be able to be recycled.

Over the holidays many people will receive gifts that will replace perfectly good older items. Instead of throwing good items away, please consider giving them away so they can be reused.

The Reuse Centre accepts household items in good working condition. Everything in the Reuse Centre is available at no cost.

Not all Glass Goes in the Bin The specially marked glass collection bins in the East Kootenay are for container glass only.

The only glass that is accepted for recycling is food-grade glass, which is anything that holds your food or beverages. This includes:

Jam jars Pickle jars Iced tea or wine bottles

Salsa jars Olive oil jars Cheese whiz jars

These containers must be well rinsed with lids removed.

The following are NOT accepted in the glass bins:

Dishes of any kind (clear drinking glasses, pyrex dishes, corel ware, pottery, plates, etc). No dishes!

Shower doors, windshields Lightbulbs and picture frame glass Glass trinkets (like candlestick holders and tree decorations) Glass cannot be recycled in the yellow bins. Contact the RDEK for glass recycling bin locations

TIN & FOIL

Tin pie plates and foil roasting pans cannot be recycled in the yellow bins. They can be recycled in Cranbrook at the Bottle Depot

Milk cartons are not accepted in the yellow bins, but can be taken to the Cranbrook Bottle Depot for recycling

On December 25th alone, over 30 million bags of garbage will be thrown out of Canadian households.

Our yellow recycling bins are often on private property and it is so important that we keep them clean. Please put all recyclables in the bin.

Paper based wrapping paper can be recycled in any of the yellow bins in the East Kootenay and the curbside recycling program in Invermere. From cards and envelopes to wrapping and tissue paper, please recycle as much as possible.

The yellow bins in the RDEK and curbside program in Invermere take the following:

Electronics are often a hot holiday gift item.

Old electronics that are still in good working condition can be taken to an RDEK Reuse Centre; however, if they’re no longer working, they may be able to be recycled.

Over the holidays many people will receive gifts that will replace perfectly good older items. Instead of throwing good items away, please consider giving them away so they can be reused.

Not all Glass Goes in the Bin The specially marked glass collection bins in the East Kootenay are for container glass only.

The only glass that is accepted for recycling is food-grade glass, which is anything that holds your food or beverages. This includes:

Salsa jars Olive oil jars Cheese whiz jars

These containers must be well rinsed with lids removed.

The following are NOT accepted in the glass bins:

Dishes of any kind (clear drinking glasses, pyrex dishes, corel ware, pottery, plates, etc). No dishes!

Shower doors, windshields Lightbulbs and picture frame glass Glass trinkets (like candlestick holders and tree decorations) Glass cannot be recycled in the yellow bins. Contact the RDEK for glass recycling bin locations

TIN & FOIL

Tin pie plates and foil roasting pans cannot be recycled in the yellow bins. They can be recycled in Cranbrook at the Bottle Depot

Milk cartons are not accepted in the yellow bins, but can be taken to the Cranbrook Bottle Depot for recycling

Ben Thomsen, 31, followed up a 21st-place finish in the super-G on Friday, December 14th, by placing 10th in Saturday’s downhill in Val Gardena, Italy.

Pushing out of the start gate wearing bib number 30, Thomsen laid down a high-speed, solid run from top to bottom and clocked in at 1:57.44 – 1.31 seconds behind the day’s leader, Aleksander Aamodt Kilde of Norway.

Saturday’s top-10 is Thomsen’s best result on the Val Gardena track, and his seventh career top-10 result in World Cup downhill.

“I am so stoked and very excited to see what I can do in the future,” said Mr. Thomsen from Val Gardena’s finish area.

The Invermere, B.C., native also notched a 15th-place finish in World Cup downhill this season when it was hosted on Canadian snow at Lake Louise in late November. His career-best finish in this event came in February 2012 when he finished second in Sochi, Russia.

Bylaw Amendment - Windermere East The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Board of Directors is considering an application by Xplornet Communications on behalf of Walter Bruns to amend the text of the Upper Columbia Valley Zoning Bylaw.

If approved, the bylaw will permit a new wireless communication facility on property located at 1490 Windermere Loop Road in the Windermere area east of Highway 93/95 as shown on the attached map.

Bylaw No. 2889 cited as “Regional District of East Kootenay - Upper Columbia Valley Zoning Bylaw 900, 1992 - Amendment Bylaw No. 343, 2018 (Windermere East / Bruns)” will amend the text of the A-2 Zone to permit a wireless communication facility on the subject property.

Evening events like a cocktail party are popular with serving substantial finger foods or plan a relaxed buffet dinner with a make ahead casserole or stew, that are easy, warm and inviting ways to entertain this time of year.

The following recipe is a showstopper can be made the day ahead, served as a main course or cut into smaller pieces for a lighter snack. It can also be made vegetarian by replacing the meat with your favorite vegetable ragu and using vegetable stock as well as gluten free with changing up the breadcrumbs.

Sausage and Rice Timbale Total: 1 hr 30 min / Prep: 15 min / Cook: 1 hr 15 min / Yield: 6 - 12 servings Ingredients Kosher salt 2 1/2 cups Arborio rice 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 medium onion, chopped 3/4 pound Italian pork sausage, casings removed 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/4 cup tomato paste 3 cups low-sodium chicken broth 3 to 4 tablespoons breadcrumbs 4 large eggs 1 1/4 cups grated pecorino Romano cheese (about 3 ounces) 2 ounces deli-sliced provolone cheese Directions 1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the rice; reduce the heat and simmer, stirring once or twice, until the rice is tender, 12 to 15 minutes. Drain, shaking the colander to remove any excess water. Spread the rice on a rimmed baking sheet and let cool.

2. Preheat the oven to 450’F degrees and place a baking sheet on the middle rack. Melt 2 tablespoons butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion and cook until soft, about 8 minutes. Add the sausage and cook, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until browned, about 6 minutes. Tear the basil and add to the skillet along with the garlic and tomato paste. Increase the heat to high and cook, stirring, until the tomato paste browns, about 4 minutes. Stir in the chicken broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet. Cook, stirring occasionally, until thickened, 15 to 20 minutes.

3. Meanwhile, grease the bottom and sides of an 8-inch springform pan with the remaining 1 tablespoon butter. Coat the pan with the breadcrumbs, tapping to remove any excess. Put the eggs and all but 3 tablespoons of the pecorino cheese in a small bowl and beat with a fork.

Put the cooled rice in a bowl; add the egg mixture and stir to combine.

4. Transfer about two-thirds of the rice mixture to the prepared springform pan. Using moist fingers, pat the rice onto the bottom and up the sides of the pan, forming a 1/2-inch-thick layer. Place the provolone slices over the rice in the pan. Spoon about three-quarters of the sausage filling over the provolone, filling it to 1/2 inch from the top. Pat the remaining rice mixture on top to enclose the filling, and then sprinkle with the remaining 3 tablespoons pecorino cheese. Put the pan on the hot baking sheet and bake until golden, about 20 minutes. Transfer to a rack and let cool, 5 minutes.

5. Run a small knife around the edge of the pan to loosen the timbale, and then remove the side of the pan.

Slide a spatula under the timbale and transfer it to a platter. Thin the remaining sausage filling with a splash of water and reheat. Serve with the timbale.

THE BLUE LINE Rockies stacking up wins through first half of the season

The Columbia Valley Rockies are piling up wins and gaining momentum as the season progresses. Midway through the season, head coach Wade Dubielewicz said: “It’s the most successful season we’ve had in a long time.”

The credit goes to each and every player, he said.

“If you look at stats, it’s a full team effort not just one or two guys doing all the work,” he said. “Everyone’s producing and pitching in... I really think this is a resilient group. We could be down two goals and then score two goals in two minutes.”

With 19 wins, 8 losses and 3 overtime losses as of Tuesday, December 18th, the team is performing at record levels. But as well as the players are doing, Mr. Dubielewicz is not content.

“Our staff has such high expectations because we know that we can be that good,” he said. “I want to see our team get mentally and physically tougher from the beginning of the game to the end.”

Dace Prymak, who has scored nine goals already this season and made 19 assists as of December 11th, said: “I think we have good guys in the room and always manage

to push through.”

Mr. Prymak said the best moment of the season so far was watching Kale Hawryluk take the puck from the Rockies’ end and send it straight into their opponents’ net.

“It was a huge relief knowing we weren’t losing that game,” he said. “It was pretty big for the team.”

Goalie Ben Kelsch has spent three seasons with the Rockies and said this is already the best one yet.

“It’s fun. Winning is fun,” he said. “Wade built quite a team.”

Although the team started strong and then faltered, he said: “We’ve definitely picked it up the past month or two... Things are finally clicking.”

Fraser McMann has 11 goals and 16 assists on his record for the season and is hoping for a deep playoff run.

“We got a special group here and we want to win it all,” he said. “I think we’ve got a championship team...

We have a lot of leaders in the room and I think that will make us successful this year.”

Mr. Dubielewicz remains cautiously optimistic.

“I think we could potentially have a special ending to the season. There’s a lot of work to be done,” he said. “We have some maturing to do and some learning.”

Prepare for the coming of Christmas

The man in question was standing in the middle of the busy shopping district, hands in his pockets, looking up at the sky. The questioner had been watching from a café window for ten minutes. Unable to stand it any longer, she went outside and tapped him on the shoulder. “What are you doing?” she asked, half concerned, half annoyed. “I’m waiting,” he said. “What for?” she asked, looking up at an empty sky. The man smiled at her. His eyes were infinitely kind. “Peace,” he said.

Advent is a time of waiting. It’s a time to be still in the midst of our busy lives and reflect. It’s a time to ask big questions we don’t normally ask, to reach out and touch something beyond ourselves. What are you waiting for this Christmas? A new iPod? A new relationship? A special gift? A diagnosis? An operation? Relief from the pain of a loss? In our busy lives it’s easy to put these things aside but we’re all waiting for something, no matter how big or small it might be.

As we look towards Christmas, we stand at the threshold of hope. In the life of Jesus there is hope for all of us in all of life: joys and sorrows, celebration and pain.

Take time to stand and be still. Take time to wait, think, reflect, and ask. Hold yourself, your dreams, pains, and joys with love and care. Hold those close to you in your thoughts, with all your love.

Many of us like to take a shortcut if we can; we think it will get us to where we want to be much quicker. We turn off the main road and follow country lanes because this looks like the most direct route. Sometimes it works, but most of the time we find ourselves wandering down narrow country lanes where we come to junctions without signposts and, very likely, get lost.

People do similar things with cooking. They watch the celebrity cook make the most amazing dish and decide to try it themselves. The recipe says to marinate for three hours but the family will be home before then so we cut that bit out and surprise, it’s nearly not as good as we thought it would be. In fact, it’s a bit of a letdown. Don’t we sometimes feel the same about Christmas – that it can let us down – all that shopping, all the gift wrapping, the dash to the carol concert when we are so worn out?

Perhaps the reason we sometimes feel let down with Christmas is because we took a shortcut to the big day.

We missed Advent, that time when we prepare ourselves spiritually for the coming of the Christ child. If we want something to be a success we have to prepare thoroughly for it. Ask any decorator; they will tell you that preparation is everything. It’s the same with Christmas. We need to spend time preparing our hearts and minds for the most amazing thing that has ever happened, Christ coming into the world to show us the way of love.
