Holding your wedding outside is (weather-permitting) a wonderful way to take advantage of the incredibly scenic backdrop the Columbia Valley landscape offers. No matter what location you choose, whether it’s one of the highly sought after golf course venues, a private backyard, a favourite viewpoint, or a local lodge tucked away in the mountains or along the river, you are guaranteed a natural décor second to none that makes for fantastic memories — and photographs. The 2017 issue of Columbia Valley Weddings dives into this wedding trend: by offering tips on how to prepare for the unpredictable natural elements; by featuring three lovely valley venues ideal for plein air vows; and by showcasing three recent weddings that capitalized on the natural beauty of the region. Being outside enhances the mood and romance of any occasion, helping make your wedding day the perfect celebration of your love. And if you do choose the outdoors for your big day, there’s nowhere better to be than the Columbia Valley. — Nicole Trigg, Editor

Outdoor weddings and the Columbia Valley go together hand in hand. From the beautiful lakes, mountains and wetlands locations, a wedding in the valley will never be less than stunning.
But with outdoor weddings comes exposure to the elements, such as the wind, heat, and even rain. Keeping your bridal makeup and hair picture perfect is made easier with these tips from local experts. The first tip all our experts agree on is keep it simple: play off the natural beauty of the area to get inspiration for your look. “The area we live in is very much suited to a natural bride; we’re still doing makeup mostly bold eyes and neutral lips. Going into fall, we see a lot bolder lips that come in with the spice reds, the wine reds,” said lead esthetician at Fusion Wellness Spa Leigha Kehr. With outdoor wedding spaces usually on uneven ground such as beaches, forests and in fields, bridal parties should ditch their stilettos. “A wedge sandal is a great shoe for outdoor weddings. Ballerina flats are great as well. Always have an extra pair of shoes to switch it up as needed; it’s a long day on your feet,” says Lucky in Love Wedding Design owner Leanne Brooks. As a wedding planner, Leanne has seen a fair share of grass stains on wedding dresses. She says it’s impossible to avoid with outdoor nuptials. Her tip for removing small stains is to use club soda with a clean white cloth and that should do the trick. When it comes to planning your bridal look, Makeup by Addison’s owner Addison

Quinn says to always do a trial run of your makeup no matter if it’s done by a professional or you’re doing it yourself. According to Addison, you want to test out how the makeup looks in different lighting and how it reacts to the elements. “In outdoor weddings, you deal with way more elements than you would if you were inside including heat, sweat, wind, sun and, heaven forbid, rain or moisture. A big thing I would recommend is anything for oil control, especially if you have oily skin at all. Blotting paper, oil-free moisturizer or an oil-free primer; something that is going to be long-lasting or waterproof,” she said. Another big tip a bride and her bridesmaids should consider is using a finishing spray or an HD matte powder to set their makeup. Both products will ensure the makeup will stay and won’t run during the ceremony. To avoid a creased look, brides should stay away from any cream eyeshadows and blushes, and opt for a powder instead. If you’re an eyeliner fan, choose a pencil over liquid as it will prevent running, and always choose a waterproof mascara. Proper skin preparation is essential for both bride and groom. A top tip from experts is to get a facial before the wedding. For the bride, a facial should be done a few days to a week prior to the wedding, whereas a groom can wait until the day before the big day. Columbia Valley Weddings 2017
“For a groom, a facial and a shave the day before is just going to get him on his way to looking and feeling his best,” said Leigha with Fusion Wellness Spa. Another piece of advice to keep in mind leading up to your big day: sunscreen and plenty of water will do wonders for your skin as properly hydrated skin takes makeup better. To protect your skin during the wedding, an SPF-based moisturizer or foundation can be applied as long as it is under SPF 15. “Something over 15 SPF can cause a flashback in photos,” said
Columbia Valley Weddings 2017
Addison. “I recommend a maximum of SPF 15. Sunscreens have a titanium dioxide, which can cast a white film on your skin and, in a flash photo, it can bounce back at the camera and actually wash you out.” To ensure your outdoor wedding look stays, carry an umbrella for photos to shield you from the direct sun. To have your hair hold up, use weatherproof hairspray and/or consider the undone look. The best tip, the experts all agree, is to relax and have fun. After all, you’re getting married to the love of your life in the Columbia Valley.

Nature-inspired venues: from north to south It’s no wonder more and more couples are choosing the Columbia Valley as the setting for their wedding day. Not only is the scenery second to none, the sheer number of venues to choose from guarantees there is somewhere special for anyone wanting to tie the knot. The following three featured locations demonstrate just how versatile the venues in the valley are.
Columbia Outpost Lodge: an oasis of beauty Situated low in the Columbia Valley tucked in along the Columbia River, the Columbia Outpost Lodge is the perfect wedding location for couples looking for an intimate wedding dovetailed with a memorable outdoor experience. Located in Parson at the north end of the Columbia Valley near Golden, the natural elements contained at the Columbia Outpost Lodge on the grounds of Columbia Wetlands Adventures will quickly enchant you. Up until 2016, Columbia Wetlands Adventures served only as a destination for people looking to canoe or kayak on the river while taking advantage of one of the most pristine locations throughout the valley. A year ago, owner Mark Teasdale had the opportunity to purchase the property next to Columbia Wetland Adventures with the thought of refurbishing the house into a lodge for guests and utilizing the barn as a potential location for couples to get married in. When finally completed in spring of 2017, the Columbia Outpost Lodge will become one of the focal points for couples wanting to host a destination-style wedding in the valley.
“Sleeping 13 of your closest friends and family, the Columbia Outpost Lodge has everything you need to build memories that will last a lifetime,” Mark said. “It is also a short walk to a private waterfall and a dock on a lake in the stunning wetlands.” There are also numerous options for catering at the Outpost Lodge or Red Barn for serving up a custom feast sure to satisfy your guests, which could even include a family barbecue or potluck using the catering preparation area on the lower level of the barn. While the Lodge is only capable of sleeping 13, there is plenty of space for guests to camp out under the stars and enjoy the nightlife of the Columbia Valley, which makes the Columbia Outpost Lodge adaptable for weddings of all sizes. Those looking to host a large wedding also won’t be disappointed by the unique structures throughout this lush wetlands location, Mark said. “The Red Barn with its charming bones is just the place for groups of up to 120. Currently under renovation ready to launch spring 2017, the Red Barn is full of country charm and waiting for your personal touches to make your big day unique,” he said. “Photo opportunities are endless with ponds, mountain backdrops, a veil of hops and, of course, the classic Red Barn itself.” Claire Dibble, a professional photographer who’s taken engagement photos at the Columbia Wetlands Adventures, said that what makes the venue so special and unique in comparison to other wedding venues she’s worked at are the various structures like the rustic barn, railroad tracks and walking bridge located near or directly on the property.

“I also think it’s just a nice thing to be right on the water for a ceremony or during a reception,” she said. “Maybe your guests can be out canoeing or on a SUP board. It’s a different set of possibilities that are offered for sure.” Guests and wedding parties staying at Columbia Wetlands Adventures will be able to experience an enjoyable, relaxing retreat, further enhanced by the cadre of hiking and biking trails throughout the area. Capping off the venue is the choice of having an indoor or outdoor bar thanks to a covered stage with amphitheatre-style seating and a beautiful lawn with a trickling stream down to the pond. New in the wedding market as a venue, the Columbia Outpost Lodge is sure to provide an unforgettable experience.

Bull River: a destination without the travel Located just 1.5 hours south of Invermere, 15 minutes down a secluded logging road, the Bull River Guest Ranch is the ideal wedding location for couples looking to take in the picturesque features of the Kootenays without the burden of travel to do it. “We’re definitely a destination wedding location,” said Georgina Lord, owner of the Bull River Guest Ranch. “People tend to be a little shocked when they drive in because they’ve done 15 kilometres down a logging road and when they get here, it’s really quite pleasing to the eye.” At Bull River, weddings typically involve more than a day trip for the guests who are lucky enough to make the trip. Generally, there is the opportunity for the wedding party to host a rehearsal dinner on the Friday evening before hosting the main ceremony on the Saturday and a brunch to cap off the weekend on the Sunday morning. In between, people are able to enjoy the vast amount of amenities
and activities on the ranch including volleyball, horseshoes, and the hot tubs and saunas, which are available to all guests throughout their stay. “They come here and they’re not leaving,” Georgina said. “We can accommodate up to 60 people cabin-wise and we can do weddings for up to 150 people.” For larger weddings, the ranch can accommodate people as campers on the property who are looking to stay the night once the ceremony is over. For the actual ceremony, the Bull River Guest Ranch offers a variety of options tailored to fit each couple’s budget and needs. The property has two different reception venues on site, each serving its own purpose. The first is a barbecue reception area where you are able to bring in your own caterers for the event and use the grill while also running your own bar. This feature is something quite unique to Bull River that allows a bride and groom to put their own personal touch on their celebration. “You could come here and have your wedding and bring in any caterer you choose or you do the food yourself,” said Georgina. “You’ve got the beauty of making your wedding as expensive or inexpensive as you choose because the cost can be quite controlled as far as the food and alcohol side of it go, and that often is one of the most expensive parts of the wedding.” The other reception hall is run by the ranch staff, and gives interested parties the choice between two different caterers without the potential burden of having to run the bar. This lodge accommodates approximately 80 guests at the reception. In addition to the unique options offered to potential wedding parties, the real selling point to Bull River is its natural, secluded environment conveniently positioned between Invermere and Cranbrook. “We get comments every wedding, ‘This place is absolutely beautiful, I’ve never seen anywhere as beautiful as this’,” Georgina said. “That’s the kind of thing we hear again and again.”

Positioned beside Bull Mountain near the Bull River, the rustic wood cabins give a backcountry feel complimented by the various forms of wildlife in the area that surround the venue. Adding to that, nearly everything needed for a wedding is already on site and in pristine condition, leaving little work for the wedding party to set up for the big day. “I think that’s attractive to people, too, in that the whole venue is already very pleasing,” she said. “It’s not like they go into a square hall and they have to dress it up to make it something — it’s already something.” Each time a new couple comes to Bull River, the wedding is different, but the first impression is the same. “They just walk in and they’re in love with the scenery, and almost more importantly, the venue,” said Georgina.

Bringing home a Norwegian bride Jason grew up as an Invermere boy enjoying the lake and the mountains all of his life, while his bride Anne grew up in Norway.
The pair met in Australia while Jason was backpacking and Anne was at school and went on to spend much of their early years together travelling the world, spending time in Asia, and living in South America, Canada and Norway. The active couple got engaged during a hike in the Columbia Valley and quickly jumped into wedding planning. “We took a hike up Jumbo and we stopped; the weather wasn’t that great so it didn’t go as well as I was hoping. We weren’t prepared, either. We didn’t have the right clothing for the weather. On the way back, we had a quick rest stop. It was a nice location so I decided we should take a picture — I set up the camera and just went over there and went down on one knee,” Jason said. As they were only in Canada for a visit, the couple began looking at wedding venues two days after their engagement. “Invermere’s beautiful. Obviously, it’s a good place to have a wedding. Where I’m from in Norway, it’s not anything special,” said Anne. Anne and Jason on their wedding day Tracy Connery Photography

Once they decided the Columbia Valley was where they wanted to tie the knot, the scenery played a big role in their decision on what location. The pair settled on the chimney site across from the CastleRock entrance in Invermere for their ceremony and the Coy’s Par 3 Golf Course barn just south of Fairmont for the reception. “It’s a beautiful view, it faces south across the lake,” said Jason. For Jason, having the lake and mountain view was very important, and the Coy’s Par 3 barn gave them a great view of the mountains for the reception. “We booked Coy’s because we could hold it as more of a private event,” he said. “They don’t have their own bar or catering so we had more freedom.” Though they opted for natural settings, the newlyweds wanted a slightly formal look to their wedding. There was no set theme for their special day, but the pair described it as rustic with the bridesmaids in pale blush tone dresses, hay bales for seating during the ceremony, and a barn reception. Jason and Anne were married on July 30th in an intimate ceremony with 85 guests, 15 of whom were visiting from Norway and Germany. The wedding was the first time their two families met after the couple’s eight and a half year relationship. The ceremony was one no one will forget, with a few cracks of thunder threatening the service. Jason said he was relieved when he first saw his bride walking down the aisle. “It started as a really nice, sunny day and then the clouds started rolling in and we looked at the weather forecast and we knew there were thunderstorms coming. You heard a little thunder in the distance,” said Jason. “It was a stressful situation because the storm was coming in (but then he saw Anne). She looked beautiful.” The thunder cracked again during their vows, and then again, just as Jason popped the champagne after the ceremony. The reception was a dance party, which the couple described as the best dance party with great music, a photo booth and traditional Norwegian wedding games.

Across-valley coupling Rain is said to be good luck on your special day, but it also has the potential to ruin an intimate outdoor ceremony overlooking Lake Windermere.
For Claire and Derek, a little rain made their wedding extra special with a quick last-minute venue change. The couple’s July 16th nuptials had the high school sweethearts visiting not one, but three locations during the course of their special day. The bride and groom from Sylvan Lake, Alberta met in 2004 and have been together ever since. The pair spends a great deal of their time outdoors. After getting engaged, they were looking for an outdoor wedding location and a suggestion from Derek’s parents turned their attention to the Columbia Valley. The couple, who vacations every September in Invermere for Derek’s birthday, love the scenery and community, and said it was a “no-brainer” to pick Invermere for their wedding. “Invermere is a mix of what we love: lake life and the mountains,” said Claire. In the days leading up to the wedding, the weather in Invermere was less than ideal, forcing the couple to realize their planned outdoor ceremony at Eagle Ranch Resort might not work. “We had to decide by 10 in the morning if we were still going to have it outside at Eagle Ranch, there at
16
the gazebo. That morning we had to make the call that we were going to have it indoors at Copper Point Resort,” said Claire. The wedding reception had already been planned for Copper Point Resort and set up the night before, and the pair has asked if there was a space they could use for the wedding ceremony just in case it rained. The morning of the big day, it was raining in the valley so the couple switched ceremony locations and left the setup and decorating of the indoor space in the hands of Copper Point staff. “All the staff at Copper Point and a few of my family members created this beautiful ceremony spot without me or my husband having any part of it. It was a nice surprise to see it all set up with our theme,” said Claire. She and Derek had planned a special first look and personal vows before the wedding. Their wedding photographer Kyla Brown wanted to take them to a location that fit their enchanted forest theme. Claire, however, was set on having her special moment with her future husband at the gazebo they were supposed to be married under at Eagle Ranch.
Columbia Valley Weddings 2017
“We loved going there, we loved standing there, knowing ‘Oh, this is where we’re going to become husband and wife.’ We loved it so much. When we couldn’t do it there anymore, we were kinda bummed out about it,” said Claire. As she walked out to the gazebo to meet her soon-to-be husband who was waiting with his back to her, the rain began to clear. “That’s why I keep saying my day was perfect because even though the rain changed things and all my planning, it all ended up being so great because we still got our moment at that gazebo we always dreamt about,” said Claire. They then headed back to Copper Point Resort for their ceremony in a banquet room completely transformed into the enchanted forest Claire envisioned. Once pronounced husband and wife, Claire and Derek had a cham-
pagne toast with their 80 guests before the wedding party headed out to Grizzly Ridge on the west side of the valley for photos. As they walked deeper and deeper into the forest, the enchanted forest theme of their wedding came to life. “Derek and I love being outdoors and being in the deep woods where it feels like you’re in the middle of nowhere. Kyla took us to a spot that was exactly what I had in my head; it was so beautiful,” said Claire. The Lewicki nuptials may not have gone as planned but, nevertheless, to them their big day was perfect. From their special moments at the Eagle Ranch Resort gazebo to the convenience of Copper Point Resort to breathtaking photos in the forest, the new Mrs. Lewicki describes her cross-valley celebration as her perfect Canadian destination wedding.

Invermere couple Dustin Penner and Meredith Heckler knew as soon as they became engaged that a wedding outside in the elements was the venue for them.
Whereas some couples want the big wedding characterized by elegant china and expensive decor, Meredith and Dustin focused on maximizing the energy from their marriage in a natural environment. Starting with the date, they settled on Spring Solstice as a symbol of the light defeating the dark with the location being the Grizzly Ridge waterfall near CastleRock in Invermere. Having both grown up in the Columbia Valley, they had hiked around that area numerous times. It was sitting near this very waterfall as a child that Meredith had first pondered the meaning of true love. After she and Dustin decided to get married, they knew this was the place in nature where they wanted to say their vows.
Columbia Valley Weddings 2017
“I was sitting at the top of the lower waterfall, having a memory of being a kid at that very place, thinking about true love and what that would mean,” said Meredith, recounting the first time the couple had visited the site before they ever considered marriage. “As I was lost in daydreams of those childhood memories, Dustin had hiked down the side of the waterfall and waved to me from the bottom. Instantly, I thought, ‘That’s a sign’.” The couple elected to have what Meredith terms a “gypsy wedding.” Men donned fedoras while the women wore longer skirts and shawls, with many different colours in the number of different fabrics to complement the outdoor springtime environment. Following the ceremony, they happily shared their first dance as a wedded couple at their business, the Do Nothing Floatation Centre, located in downtown Invermere, which also served as the location for their reception. Getting married in her bare feet so as to take advantage of the natural euphoria of the ceremony, Meredith was happy to have embraced the opportunity to take their wedding into one of the valley’s most picturesque outdoor locations instead of a conventional church or reception hall. “Having roofs over our heads, having walls around us, seemed to confine the gesture we were making,” she said, “and it felt like, as a symbol of our love, that the only natural thing to do would be to be outdoors where we were just fully open to the universe.”
