Expanding community collaboration

T

he lofty goal of the Columbia Valley Business Magazine is to reflect any new developments and trends taking place within the local business community.

In my research, I discovered such a huge wealth of innovation, creativity and enthusiasm that it was difficult to pinpoint exactly what the editorial focus should be.

After speaking with numerous business owners and experts, I eventually decided to explore three interesting facets of the local economy that appear to be growing exponentially — tourism, electronic commuters and local food manufacturing.

A Long Tradition of Tourism offers a different take on the tourist traffic that inundates the valley each year, bringing readers back to the turn of the 20th century, when the startling natural beauty of the Columbia Valley had Canadian Pacific Railway executives dipping into their pocketbooks with the idea of developing the region along the lines of the Banff Springs Hotel.

E-Commuters Embrace Valley Living will transport readers from the past into the future with in-depth profiles about three resourceful local professionals making their living via the internet.

The recent buzz about successful local food producers led to Local Food Manufacturing Flourishing, in which

A long tradition of tourism

ver one million visitors travel to the Columbia Valley each year and the number is growing.

But it’s no wonder — tourism and all of its trappings have been a key economic driver in the region since the turn of the 20th century. “(Tourism) has been present right from the beginning,” said Windermere Valley Museum assistant curator Alex Weller. “I have read countless accounts spanning over a century talking about the natural beauty and recreation potential of this area. It’s little surprise that there has been a market to attract visitors to enjoy it.”

While it was the valley’s abundant natural resources that first attracted nomadic First Nations who travelled here seasonally to hunt, then lured many a pioneer with the promise of wealth through fur trade, mining and ranching opportunities, it was the call of a growing tourism industry that led to the construction of the Banff-Windermere Highway and ultimately paved the way for a vibrant economy that has supported valley residents for over 100 years.

The Canadian Rockies quickly became prominent among international tourists after the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) opened the Banff Springs Hotel in 1888. Interest soon spread to the Columbia Valley where the hot springs in Sinclair Canyon were becoming popular. In 1890, Englishman Roland Stuart purchased the springs for $160. By 1914, a concrete bathing pool, log bath house, small store and caretaker home had been built, and a number of bungalow camps and hotels were soon established on the banks around the site, including one sponsored by the CPR. The area immediately around the hot springs went on to function as the Radium townsite for decades.

Tourism development in the Columbia Valley was not just limited to the Radium region. The area now known as Fairmont Hot Springs intrigued another Englishman, W. Heap Holland, who arrived in the area in the early 1900s. He purchased a vast tract of land that included the springs and operated it as a ranch and resort. Meanwhile, keen to make the Windermere Valley a major stopping point on the newly developing North American motor road system was Robert Randolph Bruce. Bruce, who founded the townsite of Wilmer and built the historic building that today houses the Pynelogs Cultural Centre & Art Gallery (among many other landmark achievements), lobbied for the construction of the Banff-Windermere Highway, which was started in 1911 and, by the time it was completed in 1922, also led to the creation of Kootenay National Park.

“The Highway became a tourist link to the valley,” said Alex. “Not only was it the first motor road across the central Rockies, beating out the road through the Kicking Horse by over five years, but it was advertised as the last link in a 5,000-mile system of highways known as the Grand Circle Tour and marketed as ‘probably the most spectacular motor route in the world.’

High praise indeed.”

The Grand Circle Tour connected the little Windermere Valley (now commonly known as the Columbia Valley) with places like Vancouver, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, and Yellowstone. A shorter “Canadian Rockies Circle Tour” was also promoted, which connected the valley through the Crowsnest Pass Highway to MacLeod then Calgary and Banff. The road itself was also considered an attraction, with abundant wildlife and a quick link to the other national parks — Banff, Yoho and later Jasper — previously accessible only by train.

The same year the highway was completed, the federal government expropriated Stuart’s hot springs for inclusion in the new national park, and quickly set about making them a major tourist attraction with a new bathhouse and pool expansion in the years to follow.

A CPR bungalow camp on Lake Windermere had officially opened in 1920 on the eastern side of present-day Fort Point in Invermere. Consisting of 25 cabins and a central clubhouse for dining and dancing, the camp promised visitors good trout fishing, bathing, boating, tennis courts, mountain pony rides, and a nearby ninehole golf course — the first course in the valley (now the Wilder subdivision up the hill from the Station Pub). To further entice visitors, a David Thompson Memorial Fort was constructed on the southwest end of Fort Point in 1922 as a joint effort by CPR and Hudson’s Bay Company. A number of expeditions to nearby areas were also recommended.

Among these were (naturally) a trip to the Radium Hot Springs or Fairmont pools, a lovely drive up Toby Creek Road to Paradise Mine, or a multi-day excursion up Horsethief Creek to see the Lake of the Hanging Glacier.

“Despite the distance, you’d be surprised how often Lake of the Hanging Glacier made its way into various advertising pamphlets for the area,” said Alex.

Evidence of this historic camp can been found in and around Invermere today. The central clubhouse is now known as the CPR Lodge, located next to Dorothy Lake. One of the memorial fort’s four towers from its palisade has since found its way to Kpokl beach, just east of Kinsmen Beach.

Another important aspect of the early to u r i s m business was big game hunting. Promoted in the Columbia Valley by CPR in the early 1900s, it experienced a huge upswing after World War I. Many valley residents either made a living or supplemented their income by guiding for outfitters.

Mountain guiding also had a presence. Conrad Kain, the famous Austrian mountain guide known for his pioneering climbs in the Purcell Mountains, lived in Wilmer and guided members of the Alpine Club of Canada and other mountain climbing enthusiasts who found their way into the valley as early as 1910.

“There have been some additions over the years because of modernization and motorized activities,” said Tourism Radi-

um manager Kent Kebe, “but the traditional tourism has not changed — the outdoor recreation, the national parks.”

Although tourism slowed down in the 1930s with the Great Depression, another boom was experienced after World War II, at which time road improvements were made in Kootenay National Park, with the road between Golden and Cranbrook having been hard-surfaced in 1939. As visitors came to explore the natural attractions of the valley in the postwar years, an increasing number also looked to stay here longer than a couple of weeks.

“Back then, there was never rent for the year or summer; it was mainly overnight,” said Kent. “People stayed a few days and moved on.”

In 1951, the year the current Radium Hot Springs Aquacourt was completed, there was an average of 1,000 people per day visiting the hot pools at the height of the season, with the peak day just under 2,000. As the numbers climbed steadily through the ‘50s and the ‘60s, so did the need for more accommodation. The first summer homes on Lake Windermere were built at Calberley Beach in Windermere. With a summer population living on the lake, the first Lake Windermere Regatta (re-branded in 2013 as the Lake Windermere Summer Splash) was launched in 1958.

The 1960s saw the valley venture into year-round tourism.

The growth in the number of visitors prompted the Radium townsite to move to its present location at the Radium junction. The pools at Fairmont Hot Springs had been purchased in 1957 by brothers Earl and Lloyd Wilder and, under their ownership, Fairmont became internationally recognized as a 4.5 star destination resort with two 18-hole golf courses, a ski hill, an RV park, a 6,000 foot airstrip and Canada’s largest odourless, natural hot springs. The Panorama ski hill also saw its start in the sixties, beginning in 1962 with a rope tow and a small warming hut. The first chair lift was built in 1967, the golf courses expanded to 18-hole layouts, and when the Paradise and Mineral King mines closed down in the ‘70s, the service industry grew to be a major source of employment, setting the stage for continued growth through the 1980s when legacy events like the Heart of the Rockies Triathlon and the Columbia Valley Classics Autumn Show & Shine were born.

And the rest, as the saying goes, is history.

“There isn’t a business owner out there who wouldn’t acknowledge that, without our visitors and second-home owners, there are businesses that would not be here; that’s just the reality,” said Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce executive director Susan Clovechok. “Tourism is how this area has become what it is and will likely remain the cornerstone of the valley economy.”

E-commuters embrace valley living

I

n today’s world, internet technology has created opportunity where none previously existed.

With so much marketplace interaction taking place online, earning a living no longer has to be location-specific, thus allowing people so inclined to base themselves wherever they please. These enterprising folk have become known as nomadic entrepreneurs, location independents, or electronic commuters (e-commuters for short), depending on your lingo, and growing numbers of them make up an intriguing segment of the Columbia Valley’s workforce.

algary native and professional engineer Sue-Rose Read fell into the e-commuting lifestyle after marrying a valley local (her husband David Read owns and operates Valley Hawk Security).

After meeting David and contemplating a future in Invermere, Sue-Rose looked into working for the valley’s engineering companies, but jobs were scarce.

“It was difficult; it’s a niche area out here,” said Sue-Rose. “Essentially, you wait for someone to retire or leave, so that didn’t work.”

Nor was she able to create a remote working arrangement with her then-employers, a Calgary-based oil and gas operating company.

“The business runs on teamwork between the engineers, the geologists and landmen, so you have to be there,” she said. “It was just too risky for them.”

It was only when she approached the petrophysics company that, as a universi-

ty student, she had worked part-time for that she found the right fit.

It turned out to be a win-win situation for both parties. The 24-hour consulting company didn’t have to train her because she already knew the work, and Sue-Rose moved into a computer-based profession she could do from her home in Invermere.

The basis of her work is to process and interpret image logs for oil and gas companies that detail what the geology looks like underground for current or potential wells.

“When they drill into the ground, they can have an image tool that goes down and takes basically a 360 degree picture of what’s below the surface,” Sue-Rose explained. “This allows us to process and interpret important information key to drilling a successful well like where the oil is and the best way to access it.”

Conference calls and online meetings keep her in constant communication with the rest of her team. She puts in the occasional day at the office whenever she’s back in Calgary.

“I’m the only one (with this working arrangement),” said Sue-Rose. “I just sign in on their network so they know when I’m working or what I’m working on.”

Sue-Rose has discovered a disadvantage to e-commuting in a new town — not meeting people in the community through work.

“To work from home is amazing,” she said. “But you really have to make that extra effort; you really have to go out of your comfort zone.”

True to her word, Sue-Rose, a new mom with a young daughter, has joined a momand-tot workout class and is on the board of directors for the Family Resource Centre.

“The only reason why I can do this (e-commute) is because Shaw has very fast internet out here,” she said, which meets her work requirement of at least 20 megabytes per second. There is also something to be said for how close Invermere is to Calgary, Sue-Rose added.

“The proximity is nice because if I did have to go for a meeting, I would be able to do that within a day,” she said. “Dropping into the office regularly is important to stay in the loop — things move so fast in Calgary.”

Upon having a client say this to him in 2007, software developer Rob Orchiston decided they were words to live by.

For the past seven years, Rob has run his software company called Objectech Solutions Inc. from his home office in Invermere. Specializing in developing software solutions using Microsoft technologies, Objectech mostly contracts out to Calgary-based corporations. Rob works about 50 per cent of the time from home and the remainder in his clients’ offices.

“Depending on what phase a project is in, working from home is really no different from being in the office,” said Rob. “I can often instant message and interact with my colleagues just as if I were sitting at my desk in Calgary, by using tools such as realtime chat, phone and email.”

For instant meetings, some of his clients use electronic whiteboards; and Rob has a stylus and tablet for drawing adhoc diagrams for colleagues.

“I usually schedule my meetings and client interaction for the days when I am in the city,” he said.

Since face-to-face communication with clients is vital when analyzing and confirming their requirements, Invermere’s proximity to a major city centre is important to Rob, who travels back and forth regularly, through hail, sleet and snow. No situation is perfect, however.

“It can be isolating, working from home all week, so I have been known to work in a local coffee shop on occasion, which is often a hub for remote workers,” he said.

But as the father of two children, the advantage of zero commuting time is invaluable, and he finds he gets more done without the usual office chat. Since working from his home-based office,

Rob has designed, developed and supported a custom logistics application for a Jamaican tourism company and a WCB claim submission system for the Northwest Territories, among many other projects.

“We could use a wider choice of more reliable internet providers here in Invermere,” said Rob. “However, the current offering is workable and speeds and reliability have improved vastly over the last seven years.”

A proponent of a daily air service or rapid shuttle service to Calgary, Rob is also an advocate of affordable, shared office space to attract remote workers who aren’t ready to leave the office completely.

“Satellite offices are becoming more common in the periphery of many large cities,” he said. “Because of the lake and all the biking, skiing and golf, Invermere is perfectly placed to encourage Calgary-based workers who already have access to accommodation here to ‘stay an extra day’ and work remotely. I find the winter tranquility here particularly productive.”

L

eaving behind the hierarchy of corporate structure and the hectic pace of city living was the motivation for Sarah Bennett to establish her own web-based business. After a stint working in Toronto’s high tech industry, she decided it was high time to return to her original career intention — to be mobile — and moved to Invermere with her company, Origin Brand Strategic Development, in 2002.

“I wanted to be able to work and travel,” said Sarah. “I wanted to be able to be anywhere.”

A self-taught graphic designer who has branched off into business development and technology training, Sarah specializes in creating a clear brand identity for her clients. While she does maintain a colourful office space at Frater Landing, she splits her work between the office and home, more often at home now that she is the mother of a toddler.

“Nobody has to know where a graphic designer is based,” said Sarah. “But now that I’ve moved more into business development and web technology training, I do enjoy hands-on time with clients. And face-to-face contact can be critical at certain points during the branding process,” said Sarah, who likes to see people’s initial reactions to logo and brand sketches.

But with a portfolio of Calgary-based clients, this is easily accomplished with the city centre being a mere three-hour drive away.

“Calgary is a massive and lucrative market,” said Sarah. “Another strength of the Columbia Valley is there are very well-connected people here and this strong network is the only way I’ve ever found business in Calgary or anywhere; 100 per cent by referrals from local people.”

Working for valley residents has led to jobs elsewhere in the East Kootenay and as far flung as Hawaii. Through her former programmer who is based in England, Sarah has also secured work in Europe, particularly in France.

“It’s much better to have a diverse client base when the local economy is rocky or local competition heats up,” said Sarah. “When you work online, clients are infinite.”

Because her work often involves large files, Sarah is concerned about telecommunication companies capping bandwidth to limit the volume of internet content. But despite the valley’s remote location, she has never experienced problems downloading big files and enjoys reliable cell phone service.

“I think as video becomes more important, which is inevitable, so will higher speed internet and increased capacity,” said Sarah. “Web media is continually becoming more image and video-centric — who knows where the future is, but we’ll definitely need more capacity over time.”

Brand yourself with the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce

By Susan Clovechok I’m excited the Columbia Valley Chamber of Commerce (CVCC) is partnering with the 2013-2014 Columbia Valley Business Magazine. I see this publication as an opportunity for local businesses to tell more of their story than can be relayed through a traditional newspaper advertisement. This magazine is an opportunity for business owners to explain their brand: who they are, what they are, and why.

Speaking of branding, CVCC members have the privilege of using the Chamber brand — one internationally recognized for business excellence, community involvement and integrity — to enhance their own. Business owners who are involved in their communities with a view to making their community stronger and healthier tend to garner more respect and certainly more loyalty, particularly from local shoppers.

I have lived and worked throughout Canada and whenever I either moved to a new city or my geographic responsibility expanded, I would always make sure our office and staff were involved with the local Chamber of Commerce. It is not only a great place to network with other businesses, but it is also a great place to receive information about what is going on in the local business community and uncover opportunities for strategic partnerships.

I’ve also been known to make some great hiring decisions due to a chance meeting at a Chamber event. When speaking to customers about Chamber initiatives we were participating in, we would immediately gain credibility and respect for our involvement in the business community. In every proposal and presentation I or a member of my team made, I always made certain we mentioned our involvement with the local Chamber or Board of Trade.

I believe the CVCC logo establishes a level of trust and credibility with customers and should be used in member businesses’ marketing efforts whenever and wherever possible.

By doing so, you are telling your customers and employees that you are part of the bigger community and you contribute to a larger vision of the community.

By becoming a Chamber member, you’re showing that you are connected and contributing to your community, you’re involved and engaged, and you’re here for the long haul, as joining an organization means you are established or plan to be established. I think it lends credibility to have the CVCC plaque on your wall.

Local food manufacturing flourishing

F

inding ways to make a living in the Columbia Valley can at times be challenging.

But a new wave of businesses emerging from the valley’s food culture are proving that manufacturing is a viable industry for those willing to unleash their creativity and tantalize people’s tastebuds.

This new wave of local food manufacturers has flooded local stores, farmers’ markets and community events in recent years with products so delicious you’d swear they were homemade. And they practically are. Whether it’s Arrowhead Brewing Company beer, Kootenay Bayou Hot Sauce, Bee Land honey products or Hermann’s Dressings, tourists and residents alike are drinking them in and scoffing them down.

In this burgeoning sector, it’s generally agreed that Invermere’s own Kicking Horse Coffee Company is undeniably the leader of the pack, now with continent-wide distribution for its organic, fair trade coffee — 17 years after its humble beginnings in a local garage.

College of the Rockies: helping educate the Columbia Valley community

T

he College of the Rockies (COTR) Invermere campus is located in the hub of the Columbia Valley, perfectly situated to meet the needs of the valley community with a variety of programming for all ages.

Equipped with five classrooms and two computer labs, the college is able to extend its campus thanks to a building-sharing arrangement with David Thompson Secondary School.

“We can utilize the high school art room, kitchen and theatre to expand our college classrooms,” said program co-ordinator Michelle Taylor. “We have teleconferencing available where we can conference in lecturers from just about anywhere, as well as providing off-site courses to contract groups as well.”

The campus supports students in full-time program options on a rotational basis including Health Care Assistant, Older Worker Initiative Program, and the Hairstylist Program as well as short-term industry and “just-for-fun” courses. Over 1,500 registrants make use of the Invermere campus annually.

“We work closely with industry and offer many standard industry certifications,” said Michelle. “We are also happy to create and custom design additional curriculum to meet the needs of any organization.”

With over 60 Continuing Education programs focused on working, playing, living and learning, the college has a course for almost every interest in a number of categories, from language, art and photography to customer service, cooking and wellness.

“And we offer a variety of computer courses including Word, Excel, Quickbooks, Sage Accounting, social media and website design,” said Michelle.

If a course is not currently offered, the helpful staff at the campus can often track down the ideal instructor to provide the training.

“Another option is our Ed-to-Go online program,” said Michelle. “We have over 240 courses that people can take online, which provides more flexibility and convenience for them to reach their education goals. They can learn on their own time in their home.”

A big draw at the Invermere campus is the numerous First Aid courses offered. WorkSafe BC Occupational First Aid Levels One to Three as well as a variety of Red Cross courses are presented on a regular basis. These courses provide the training needed to assist in an emergency with children, in daily life and in the workplace.

Youth programs designed around the school schedule are also offered throughout the year. Fun, educational programming for kids as young as seven is available after school, on weekends, Pro D days, early dismissal days,

“For kids, we have safety courses such as Home Alone and the Red Cross babysitting course. We have outdoor courses such as geocaching for kids, art programs, learn to sew courses and even mystery writing for teens,” said Michelle.

Established in 1975, College of the Rockies’ main campus is located in Cranbrook, as is the Gold Creek campus. In addition to the Invermere location, regional campuses are also located in Creston, Fernie, Golden and Kimberley. Each regional campus offers programs specific to the needs of its community, including tourism and health, upgrading, contract training and continuing education. Each year the College instructs approximately 2,200 students in a variety of academic, vocational and trades programs.

Finding opportunities in the community

C

elebrating its 25th anniversary in 2013, the Columbia Valley’s Family Resource Centre is not your typical non-profit organization.

A shift towards a more business-like way of thinking has enabled the centre to double its annual budget to almost $750,000 over the last decade.

“This means more services for the valley community,” said executive director Pat Cope. “That’s pretty significant.”

This growth is largely due to the centre’s Board of Directors, she said. As board members are limited to a maximum of three twoyear terms, new people are bringing their ideas to the agency all the time.

“We’re continually in the process of change because of that,” said Pat. “Our board is really a board of vision; it’s not a board that works on the day to day operation.”

By moving away from typical non-profit thinking, the centre has been able to embrace all sorts of opportunities in the community.

Recent developments include the opening of the Columbia Valley Employment Centre in 2012 and the Women’s Resource Centre in

o help tackle signs of aging, two well-established general practitioners in Invermere have launched a new business offering injection-based cosmetic procedures.

Invermere Medical Rejuvenation, established by Dr. Colleen Maytham and Dr. Theresa Ross, operates separately out of Invermere’s Chisel Peak Medical Centre, where both physicians work.

“If you’re concerned about facial wrinkles, loss of volume in your face or cheeks, that’s what we can treat,” said Dr. Ross.

The procedures can target lips, cheeks, laugh lines and “marionette” lines, the skin below either side of one’s lower lip.

It’s the first time individuals seeking treatments such as Botox injections, filler injections and vein sclerotherapy (often used to treat unsightly spider veins on the legs) can receive them in the valley. People have previously had to travel to Canmore or Calgary.
