Print, Visual, and Audio Sources

Bibliographic Essay Of primary sources on independent Catholicism, there are vast amounts of untapped materials to be found in many languages, in archives in the Vatican; in Roman, Episcopal, and Orthodox dioceses; in university libraries; on social media and websites; in independent Catholic church and scholarly collections; and in independent Catholics’ homes. For more information on my use of these sources, see the introduction, chapter 1, the appendix, the endnotes, and the primary sources section of The Other Catholics. Regarding secondary sources, for accessibility I use and cite English-language publications, but there is much more scholarship in other languages on every aspect of independent Catholic history. Major scholarly works in English start with J. M. Neale, A History of the So-Called Jansenist Church of Holland (1858; New York: AMS Press, 1970); J. B. Mullinger, The New Reformation: A Narrative of the Old Catholic Movement from 1870 to the Present Time (London: Longmans, Green, 1875); A. M. E. Scarth, The Story of the Old Catholic and Kindred Movements, Leading Up to a Union of National Independent Churches (London: Simpkin, Marshall, 1883); Henry R. T. Brandreth, Episcopi Vagantes and the Anglican Church (1947; Springfield, Mo.: St. Willibrord Press, 1987); and C. B. Moss, The Old Catholic Movement, Its Origins and History (London: Society for the Propagation of Christian Knowledge, 1948). All were Anglicans interested in Catholic identity within the Anglican communion. After that first wave, Roman Catholic scholar Peter Anson wrote Bishops at Large in 1964 (Berkeley: Apocryphile Press, 2006), a rich if caustic take on Old Catholics and other independents. Anson himself had formerly joined an Anglo-Catholic Benedictine monastery on Britain’s Caldey Island
