MESSAGE FROM OUR DIRECTOR Dear Columbia University Programs in Physical Therapy Community, As we reflect on the past year, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for the extraordinary accomplishments of our students, faculty, alumni, and staff. Our commitment to excellence in education, research, and clinical practice continues to elevate our program as a leader in physical therapy, and 2024 has been a testament to that dedication.

Our students continue to excel, demonstrating remarkable academic and clinical proficiency. The Class of 2024 achieved a 97.1% first-time and 100% ultimate pass rate on the National Physical Therapy Examination, a 98.63% graduation rate, and a 100% employment rate. Fourteen research practicum students presented at the 2024 APTA Combined Sections Meeting in Boston, showcasing their knowledge and mentorship. Six students earned the PASIG Student Scholarship for research on movement assessment, and a Class of 2026 student was a finalist in the 2024 ACAPT Student Essay Contest.

Our faculty continue to lead groundbreaking research in physical therapy and rehabilitation science. Dr. Jacqueline Montes secured a $2 million NIH R01 grant for developing digital mobility outcomes for rare neuromuscular disorders, and Dr. Laurel Abbruzzese received the Columbia University Provost Interdisciplinary Teaching Initiative grant to advance interprofessional collaboration. Faculty scholarship remains strong, with 25 peer-reviewed publications, five book chapters, and 38 conference presentations.

In July, we welcomed Dr. Michael Gevertzman, a Board-Certified Neurologic Clinical Specialist with experience in neurodegenerative disorders. His knowledge and experience will enrich our program and inspire future physical therapists.

Our commitment to clinical excellence was reinforced by expanding the PT Faculty Practice with a new location on Audubon Avenue at CUIMC. This facility enhances patient care, student learning, research, and interdisciplinary collaboration, setting the standard for integrative, patient-centered physical therapy services.

Our alumni remain a vital part of our community. This year, we launched the Columbia Physical Therapy Alumni Association, led

by Amy Cooper ('08), Marie Frolich ('21), Shanna Rock ('18), James Sinodinos ('19), and Don Wagner ('52). This initiative will strengthen our connections with graduates and provide meaningful opportunities for mentorship, professional development, and lifelong learning.

In June 2027, we will celebrate the 85th Anniversary of our Physical Therapy Program with a weekend of events—details coming soon!

As we move forward, we remain committed to innovation and excellence in physical therapy education. The success of our faculty, students, and alumni is a testament to our shared dedication to advancing healthcare and improving lives. OUR PROGRAM The Columbia University Programs in Physical Therapy is the only Ivy League physical therapy program, offering a diverse environment that blends cutting-edge education, impactful research, and exceptional clinical care. Our mission is to foster an equitable, collaborative, and inclusive educational community. Here, students and faculty are empowered to cultivate their unique talents, deliver outstanding clinical care, and contribute to transformative research addressing global healthcare challenges.

The Programs in Physical Therapy encompass three main components: the Professional Entry-Level Doctor of Physical Therapy Program; the Post-Professional Programs, including the Orthopedic Residency, Performing Arts Fellowships, Doctor of Education in Movement Science (in collaboration with Teachers College), and Continuing Professional Development Programming; and the Physical Therapy Faculty Practices, with locations in Tarrytown, NY, and at CUIMC Medical Center on Audubon Avenue. PROGRAM NEWS Dr. Mahlon Stewart PhD One of our esteemed faculty members recently earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Health Sciences (Health Promotion & Wellness) from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. Dr. Stewart’s dissertation, “Aging-in-Community in New York City: Explaining Quality of Life in a Unique Environment - A Cross Sectional Study,” focused on healthrelated quality of life of older adults living in the nation’s densest urban center. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic disrupting data collection, he remained committed to the study, ultimately recruiting 51 participants with an average age of 84. Looking ahead, he will publish his findings and inspire students to engage with and understand the unique experiences of aging populations in urban environments.

Dr. Jacqueline Montes $2,067,567 R01 Grant Dr. Jacqueline Montes has achieved significant scholarly accomplishments, including 25 peerreviewed publications, service on multiple dissertation committees, and securing foundation and industry-sponsored clinical research grants, along with five continuing medical education grants. Recently, she and Dr. Damiano Zanotto from Stevens Institute were awarded $2,067,567 from the NIH/NICHD for their multicenter project, Establishing Walking-related Digital Biomarkers in Rare Childhood Onset Progressive Neuromuscular Disorders. This marks her first successful R01 grant, one of the most prestigious NIH funding mechanisms.

Dr. Laurel Abbruzzese Provost Grant We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Laurel Abbruzzese and her team have been awarded the prestigious 2024-2025 Columbia University Provost Interdisciplinary Teaching Initiative (ITI) grant! As principal investigator, Dr. Abbruzzese is excited to collaborate with the Center for Teaching and Learning to develop innovative interprofessional teamwork resources. This project will bring together colleagues from occupational therapy, nursing, medicine, and the VP&S Center for Education Research and Evaluation (CERE) to enhance collaboration and education across disciplines. Congratulations to Dr. Abbruzzese and the entire team on this remarkable achievement!

PROGRAM NEWS Columbia University PT Faculty Clinical Practice Audubon Location We are proud to announce the opening of our newest Faculty Clinical Practice at 51 Audubon Avenue on the CUIMC campus. This exciting development is highlighted in a video featuring Dr. Rami Said, Director of the Programs in Physical Therapy Faculty Practices, alongside several of our alumni who are now practicing physical therapists at the clinic.

Welcome Dr. Michael Gevertzman Faculty The Programs in Physical Therapy welcomes Dr. Michael Gevertzman, PT, DPT, BoardCertified Neurologic Clinical Specialist, to our faculty. A 2019 graduate of our program, Dr. Gevertzman specializes in neurodegenerative disorders and has extensive experience in interdisciplinary care and teaching. Currently completing a PhD in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences, his research focuses on neurodegenerative conditions and has been presented internationally. Dr. Gevertzman is excited to contribute to teaching, research, and program development at CUIMC while mentoring the next generation of physical therapists.

Dr. Rami Said PhD Dr. Rami Said completed his PhD in Leadership in Health & Human Performance at Concordia University - Chicago. His dissertation explored the relationship between weightbearing ankle dorsiflexion capacity and lower extremity movement strategies during a single-leg step-down task. The research focused on whether active and passive dorsiflexion could predict compensatory strategies at the hip and knee. Reflecting on his PhD journey, Dr. Said found the process valuable for his career goals and his teaching approach, strengthening his research and statistical skills. Moving forward, he plans to publish his findings and expand research to include different populations, particularly those with injuries, to further enhance understanding of ankle mobility’s impact on proximal joints.

PROGRAM NEWS Dr. Lisa Yoon Weinberg Family Cerebral Palsy Center Dr. Lisa Yoon has been appointed as the head of the new Weinberg Family Cerebral Palsy Center physical therapy clinic. With over 25 years of clinical experience, Dr. Yoon has dedicated her career to treating infants and young children with developmental, neuromotor, and neuromuscular disabilities, specializing in the evaluation and treatment of cerebral palsy.

The Weinberg Family Cerebral Palsy Center recently published an article highlighting Dr. Yoon's impressive achievements and some of the state-of-the-art equipment featured at the center.

Drs. Clare Bassile & Martha Sliwinski Retirement In 2024, we bid farewell to two esteemed faculty members, Drs. Clare Bassile and Martha Sliwinski, who’s combined 49 years of service have left an indelible mark on our program. Dr. Bassile, a leader in adult neurorehabilitation, advanced care for stroke and demyelinating diseases through her research and clinical expertise. Her projects addressing stroke outcomes and mental health barriers for homebound adults reflect her dedication to improving patient care. Dr. Sliwinski, who joined Columbia in 2004, was instrumental in clinical education and student support, serving as Associate Director of Student Affairs since 2018. Her leadership in the program’s service initiatives and contributions to neurological rehabilitation have enriched our community and profession. We thank them for their invaluable contributions and wish them all the best in retirement.

STUDENT NEWS American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Combined Sections Meeting Student Presentations Thirteen students from the Programs in Physical Therapy traveled to Boston to present their faculty-mentored research at the 2024 CSM. Having work selected for presentation at CSM is a prestigious achievement, reflecting the high caliber of our students' efforts and dedication. We are incredibly proud of their hard work and the distinguished recognition they’ve earned.

Performing Arts Special Interest Group (PASIG) Student Scholarship Scholarship Award Six DPT students from the Class of 2024—Margaret J. Wiss, Alexandra Smith, Angelica G. Pastrana, Tessa O'Hara, Gabrielle Ayoub, and Adriana Ardila—were honored with the PASIG Student Scholarship for 2023-2024. Their abstract, "The Inter-Rater Reliability of the Airplane Test and Star Excursion Balance Test," showcases their dedication and academic excellence under the mentorship of Dr. Laurel Abbruzzese. This well-deserved recognition, presented during the PASIG business meeting at CSM in February, highlights their contributions to the field of physical therapy. Congratulations to these exceptional students!

Michaela Magpile Finalist in the 2024 American Council of Academic Physical Therapy (ACAPT) Student Essay Contest Michaela Magpile, DPT Class of 2026, was a finalist in the 2024 ACAPT Student Essay Contest. Her essay connected her passion for dance and the arts with the role of AI in clinical practice, emphasizing, "AI is a tool, not a replacement for humanism in care."

Michaela highlights the importance of preserving human-to-human collaboration in developing treatment plans, warning against over-reliance on AI at the expense of individual patient needs. Congratulations, Michaela, on this well-deserved recognition!

STUDENT NEWS Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) The Programs in Physical Therapy held its 2024 SHPEP Program!

The Programs in Physical Therapy proudly hosted the 2024 Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP), welcoming a group of aspiring health professionals into our community. Founded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), SHPEP plays a vital role in fostering the growth of first- and second-year college students pursuing careers in health professions. This past summer, our SHPEP Physical Therapy Scholars exemplified the program's mission by embracing every opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute to the future of healthcare. A heartfelt thank you to our faculty, students, and clinicians for their unwavering support and invaluable contributions to the program’s success. STUDENT NEWS PT Program Supports Curious Minds Science Zone On September 19, over 1,280 students from five Washington Heights public elementary schools attended a hands-on science fair at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. Organized by the VP&S Office of Student Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging, the event featured the Curiosity Cube, a mobile science lab sponsored by Abbott Elementary.

Students explored topics like heart health, reflexes, brain science, and activities led by physical therapy students focusing on balance, core strength, and flexibility. VP&S alumnus Roy Vagelos ('54) joined for a roundtable discussion, emphasizing the impact of careers in science and medicine. The event was a collaborative effort supported by Columbia departments and community organizations.

STUDENT NEWS PT Olympics Inaugural PT Olympics The DPT IIIs hosted the inaugural PT Olympics as a fundraiser for PT Prom, and it was a resounding success!

Students from all three classes and faculty competed in fun challenges like the Wheelchair Obstacle Course Relay, Crutch Race, Sit-to-Stand Competition, Anatomy Game Show, and Single Leg Balance Marathon. Exciting prizes included a golf round with Dr. Said, SwingLab analysis, a NYC cookie shop tour, RunLab analysis, private Pilates sessions, and more.

While the DPT IIs were initially crowned champions, a recount revealed the faculty as the ultimate winners!

STUDENT NEWS Physical Therapy Month PT WORKS Web Series In October, we celebrated Physical Therapy Month by launching PT WORKS, a miniInstagram series created with the help of our DPT students. This initiative features simple, desk-friendly exercises designed to help CUIMC students and employees stay active during their busy days. Check out the series on our Instagram—new episodes will continue throughout the year!

DPT IIIs and Social Justice Committee Hispanic Heritage Potluck Student Collaboration DPT IIIs and Social Justice Committee hosted a potluck in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month! The event was a huge success, featuring a fun trivia session and a variety of delicious, authentic dishes brought in by students. During the potluck, students shared the stories and history behind the dishes they prepared. A big thank you to Angelica Coleman, Katie Gonzalez, Josephine Martinez, and Joanna Samuel for making it all happen!

Columbia University Doctor of Physical Therapy Black Student Union (BSU) Inaugural Meeting The Columbia University Doctor of Physical Therapy Black Student Union (BSU) kicked off the semester with a successful first meeting!

We discussed our purpose—to foster a safe, collaborative, and fun space to explore Black experiences and provide resources to underserved communities—and our mission to build community among students of African, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Latin, and African American descent (all are welcome). The meeting included resource planning, icebreakers, and games to strengthen connections across classes. BSU is actively seeking new members (students, alumni, and staff) and looks forward to collaborating with other organizations. Our next meeting will be in early 2025—stay tuned!

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION In 2023, the Programs in Physical Therapy proudly launched our inaugural Alumni Association under the leadership of Program Director Dr. Jean Fitzpatrick. Dr. Fitzpatrick recognized the immense value of our alumni network and the importance of maintaining strong connections with those who have shaped our program’s legacy. To bring this vision to life, we initiated a campaign to form a dedicated team, seeking passionate individuals to fill key roles: Chair, Vice Chair of Events, Vice Chair of Alumni Outreach and Engagement, and Vice chair of Mentorship.

We were thrilled to see numerous alumni step forward, nominating themselves for various positions, and participating actively in the election process. The positions were ultimately filled by the following accomplished Columbia alumni, whose commitment and enthusiasm have already made a significant impact. Their work is well underway, and they’ve already contributed to selecting the speaker for our White Coat Ceremony this year. Their efforts are helping to strengthen our community and ensure the continued success of our program for years to come.

Shanna Rock, PT, DPT, Board Certified Neurologic Physical Therapist Chair of the Alumni Association Dr. Shanna M. Rock, PT, DPT, is a seasoned healthcare professional with over 20 years of experience. Her first 15 years were dedicated to healthcare policy, advocacy, and business strategy, culminating in her role as Managing Director of a global healthcare division. Over the past decade, she has transitioned to clinical practice, focusing on neurological rehabilitation, and earning her Neurological Clinical Specialty in 2023. As clinical faculty at Columbia University, she coordinates and teaches three courses within the physical therapy program. A visionary leader with expertise in strategy, team building, and operations, Dr. Rock now serves as Chair of the Columbia Physical Therapy Alumni Association. She is dedicated to fostering connections among alumni, advancing the physical therapy profession, and supporting the Columbia community through collaboration and innovation.

James Sinodinos, PT, DPT Vice Chair of Events James Sinodinos, a proud 2019 alum, holds degrees in Biochemistry and Social Sciences from Stevens Institute of Technology. A Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, he is also certified in performance and therapy specialties by EXOS, OnBaseUniversity, Driveline Baseball, and others. James has worked with professional athletes across the MLB, NFL, and NHL, as well as collegiate and youth athletes. As founder of Lifelong Strong Health, he provides rehab and training services to clients in their homes, gyms, and virtually, with a passion for helping older adults improve their strength, balance, and confidence to enhance their health span. Previously, James was a founding therapist for a hybrid physical therapy startup and spearheaded community engagement at Kins, fostering professional connections and educational events. Motivated by a desire to reengage with a professional community, James is eager to serve as Vice Chair of Events.

Marie Frolich, PT, DPT Vice Chair of Alumni Outreach & Engagement Marie Frolich, a 2021 graduate of the CUDPT program, works at NYU Langone Hospital in acute care and will soon transition to their outpatient neuro and medically complex facility. A passionate NY sports fan, she enjoys working out, traveling, and spending time with her family, friends, and her dog, Augie. During her time at Columbia, Marie served as class president and valued the program for its resources, opportunities, and the sense of community it fostered. With a focus on organization, responsibility, and adaptability, she is eager to contribute to the growth of the revamped CUDPT alumni program as a dedicated team member and leader.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION Amy Cooper, PT, DPT Vice Chair of Mentorship With 14 years of experience in pediatrics, she has worked across diverse settings, including early intervention, schoolbased care, home care, aquatics, and private practice, primarily focusing on children with multiple disabilities. Amy has mentored DPT students, new graduates, and therapists transitioning into new roles, building a strong pediatric network across the tri-state area. Her experience as a Clinical Instructor (CI), Center Coordinator of Clinical Education (CCCE), and contributor to Columbia’s Pediatrics course uniquely positions me to excel in a mentorship role within the CUDPT Alumni Association.

Don Wagner, BS, MHA, LFACHE, HFAAMA Vice Chair of Development Don Wagner, a 1952 Columbia graduate, began his career as a Physical Therapist in the USAF during the Korean Conflict. In 1955, he transitioned to hospital administration, earning a master’s in Hospital Administration from Baylor University in 1960. Over three decades, Don held executive roles in USAF healthcare, managing facilities of varying sizes and serving as Deputy Surgeon General for Operations in 1979. After retiring from active duty in 1982, Don became Administrator at MD Anderson Cancer Center and later joined Memorial Healthcare System as CEO of Memorial Southwest Hospital, ultimately serving as an internal consultant. Today, he continues to impact Houston’s healthcare community through interim operational roles and board leadership.

OUR FACULTY Jean Fitzpatrick, PT, PhD Professor & Vice Chair of Rehabilitation & Regenerative Medicine (Physical Therapy) at CUIMC Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist Director, Assistant Dean Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons Dr. Jean Fitzpatrick is the Director of the Programs in Physical Therapy, Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Rehabilitative & Regenerative Medicine, and Assistant Dean in the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University in New York. Her prominent role in the educational research community is evident in numerous service projects and collaborations resulting in more than 20 invited and/or peer-selected presentations at regional, national or international levels. She served as the Co-Chair of the National Outcome Strategy Committee for the Education Leadership Partnership, Chair of the Entrustable Professional Activity Working Panel, Member of the Domains of Competence Working Panel, the Co-Editor and Chief of the Journal of Clinical Education in Physical Therapy and is currently the Co-Director of a competency-based educational program for licensed physical therapists working with patients with spinal muscular atrophy. In addition to her role at Columbia, Dr. Fitzpatrick is a member of the faculty of the International Ins and Outs of EPAs course. Her research has focused on student readiness and competency-based education frameworks for physical therapist education. The sum of her scholarly work has had a substantive impact in the field of physical therapist education. She is recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in health education research and competency-based education.

Laurel Daniels Abbruzzese, PT, EdD Associate Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine (Physical Therapy) at CUIMC Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Director of Performing Arts Fellowship Dr. Abbruzzese is the recipient and Principal Investigator of the 2024-25 Provost Interdisciplinary Teaching Initiatives (ITI) grant, "Fostering Inclusive Excellence in Health Professions Education: Developing a Collaborative Teamwork Curriculum for Diverse Teams." She is Co-Investigator for the 2024-25 AAMC NEGEA Medical Education Scholarship Research and Evaluation- Emerging Innovators Medical Education and Assessment grant, "Building the Capacity of Healthcare Professionals Towards Anti-Racist and Inclusive Interprofessional Care. Her 2024 publications include an “Development and Feasibility of an Adolescent Dancer Screen” and a book chapter, “Promoting Mental/Emotional health -Older Adults” In: Pizzi M, Amir M, eds. Interprofessional Perspectives on Community Practice: Promoting Health, Well-Being, and Quality of Life. Dr. Abbruzzese has had six peer-reviewed presentations/posters/educational workshops, and two invited talks for local national and international meetings and conferences in 2024. Her student group received the Academy of Orthopedic Physical Therapy PASIG Student Research award at the 2024 APTA Combined Sections Meeting.

Brough Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine (Physical Therapy) at CUIMC Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist Associate Director of Student Retention & Advancement, Director of Columbia RunLab Colleen M. Brough, PT, DPT, MS is a board certified specialist in orthopedic physical therapy and serves as the Associate Director of Student Retention and Advancement in the Program in Physical Therapy at Columbia University. She is an Assistant Professor and the Founding Director of Columbia RunLab, a comprehensive running analysis experience for Olympic, elite, and recreational runners. An accomplished speaker, Dr. Brough has lectured internationally on Management of the Running Athlete, Orthopedics, Spine, and Post-Surgical Rehabilitation. She teaches within the orthopedic curriculum, mentors orthopedic residents, and hosts a pro-bono exercise program called CancerFIT for cancer patients and survivors. Dr. Brough's teaching responsibilities include Management of Orthopedic Conditions III (Upper Extremity) and IV (Spine). She also teaches the Running elective and the CancerFIT elective. Dr. Brough’s research interests lie in orthopedics and oncology. She is in the dissertation phase of a PhD program in Global Leadership with concentration in Organizational Change and Higher Education. Her research topic is Anti-Racist Pedagogy in Health Professions Education programs.

Lobna S. Elsarafy, PT, DPT, PhD Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine (Physical Therapy) at CUIMC Board Certified Neurological Clinical Specialist Dr. Lobna Elsarafy is an Assistant Professor in the Programs in Physical Therapy, Department of Rehabilitative & Regenerative Medicine, at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, New York. She has over 12 years of experience as a physical therapist specializing in neurological rehabilitation, treating individuals with various neurological conditions. As a faculty member, she co-developed the physical activity component of an interdisciplinary Multiple Sclerosis Wellness Clinic. This clinic allows physical therapy students to evaluate and assess clients with Multiple Sclerosis from the local community while providing tailored recommendations for safety, exercise, and fatigue management. Dr. Elsarafy primarily teaches courses in neurological rehabilitation within the Doctor of Physical Therapy program, as well as Applied Physiology, a core basic science course. She serves as a peer reviewer for Spinal Cord Series and Cases: Clinical Management in Spinal Cord Disorders and Frontiers in Rehabilitation Sciences, as well as a grant reviewer for the Switzer Research Fellowships Program and the Disability and Rehabilitation Research Projects (DRRP) Program: Health and Function, funded by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research. Her research focuses on the relationship between physical activity and cognition and the impact of a Multidisciplinary Wellness Program on individuals with Multiple Sclerosis.

OUR FACULTY Wing Fu, PT, PhD, MA Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine (Physical Therapy) at CUIMC Dr. Wing Fu is an Assistant Professor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at Columbia University. She brings a rich educational background to her role, holding a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Nova Southeastern University, a master’s degree from New York University, and entry-level physical therapy training from Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She further honed her skills in educational best practices through the Medical Educator Fellowship Program with the International Association of Medical Science Educators. Dr. Fu’s research is at the forefront of educational innovation in physical therapy, particularly in the areas of clinical reasoning and the Master Adaptive Learner Model. She led a team of educational researchers and recently completed a pioneering systematic review on the effects of educational interventions designed to enhance clinical reasoning among physical therapist learners across all stages of professional development. This pioneering work has paved the way for enhancing clinical reasoning education and research. The manuscript of the systematic review has been provisionally accepted by the Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Journal. In addition, as a recent awardee of the APTA Academy of Education Research Grant, Dr. Fu served as the principal investigator in developing the Master Adaptive Learner Behavioral Assessment Scale (MAL BAS). The scale may help PT learners across the learning continuum to identify learning gaps, cultivate MAL behaviors, and develop the adaptive expertise needed to address the complexities of clinical practice. This project will be presented at the APTA Combined Sections Meeting 2025 as a platform presentation.

Michael Gevertzman, PT, DPT, NCS Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine (Physical Therapy) at CUIMC Board Certified Neurological Clinical Specialist Michael Gevertzman is an Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC). He earned his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from CUIMC in 2019 and is currently pursuing his PhD in Interdisciplinary Health Sciences at University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He is a BoardCertified Neurologic Clinical Specialist (ABPTS) and a Multiple Sclerosis Certified Specialist (CMSC), and he holds additional clinical certificates including Parkinson’s Wellness Recovery (PWR!Moves) and Vestibular Rehabilitation (APTA). His research is focused on neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis, and his work has been presented nationally and internationally. He has developed education programs including a weeklong advanced educational experience for rehabilitation professionals to improve their knowledge and practice related to interdisciplinary care for multiple sclerosis. He has also delivered multiple presentations for patients on topics such as wellness for Parkinson’s disease, and the importance of movement for people living with multiple sclerosis. He most recently served in a senior clinical role in an outpatient neurodegenerative rehabilitation clinic, primarily working with individuals with movement disorders, neuro-immunologic disorders, and cognitive disorders. In this role he contributed to multiple interdisciplinary programs for patient care and research, including an interdisciplinary ataxia clinic and collaborative care programming with the multiple sclerosis neurology team. He mentored numerous students and received an award as the “Clinical Instructor of the Year, 2024” from the DPT program at University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He loves clinical teaching and continues to do so in his faculty role.

OUR FACULTY Michael Johnson, MPT, DsC, OCS, SCS Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine (Physical Therapy) at CUIMC Board Certified Orthopedic & Sports Clinical Specialist Director of Orthopedic Residency For 2024, I had multiple accomplishments in my role as faculty for the DPT program. I have continued to be the course director for the Medical Screening curriculum and have been involved with the orthopedic. However, this past year, I took over as the course director for the Orthopedic Conditions of the Knee, Ankle and Foot. This is delivered in the third semester of the program, in the summer for the first-year students. As director of the clinical residency in orthopedics, along with Dr. Kevin Wong, had another successful cohort of graduates. We transitioned to having our residents perform clinical responsibilities within the faculty practice at Tarrytown, which allows for better mentorship integration as well as clinical oversight for the residency program. We are hoping to grow in resident number, which would lead to potential placement at the Audubon faculty practice location.

Stacy Kinirons, PT, PhD MPH Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine (Physical Therapy) at CUIMC Associate Director, Programs in Physical Therapy Dr. Kinirons earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from Ithaca College, a Master of Public Health in Community Health Education from New York University, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Anatomy from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has been a Physical Therapist for 30 years, having evaluated and treated a variety of patients in a multitude of settings. Her current teaching responsibilities for the Programs in Physical Therapy include Gross Anatomy, Neuroscience, and Teaching Practicum electives. In recognition of her teaching acumen, she received the Program’s Excellence in Teaching Award, three years consecutively from 2017-2019. She was inducted into the prestigious Columbia University Irving Medical Center’s Virginia Apgar Society and awarded Columbia University’s highest honor for teaching, the Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching in 2020. Dr. Kinirons research interests include Gross Anatomy Education and muscle and bone in Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

Jacqueline Montes, PT, EdD, NCS Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine (Physical Therapy) at CUIMC Board Certified Neurological Clinical Specialist Director of Research, Programs in Physical Therapy The Montes Lab at CUIMC is dedicated to clinical and translational studies focused on characterizing motor function and understanding of the natural history of a diverse group of neuromuscular diseases such as spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Our research has focused on defining weakness and fatigue as a symptom complex that defines the underlying disease mechanism. Our research group includes clinician scientists, expert in movement assessment and exercise physiology with experience in scale development and implementing clinical trials. Our work extends to other genetically determined neurodevelopmental disorders affecting the motor system where we help to characterize the motor phenotype and develop outcome measures. Currently we have industry funded observational studies and was recently awarded a 4 year multicenter R01 from NICHD to develop digital mobility outcomes with AI enabled instrumented insoles in neuromuscular disorders.

OUR FACULTY Ashwini K. Rao, OTR, EdD Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine (Physical Therapy) at CUIMC Director of EdD Program Ashwini K Rao, EdD, OTR, FAOTA is a Professor and Director of the post-professional Doctor of Education in Movement Sciences (Physical Therapy) program conducted jointly with Teachers College. His academic preparation includes a bachelor’s and master’s degree in occupational therapy, Doctor of Education (EdD) in Motor learning and control from Teachers College Columbia University, and post-doctoral fellowship in Computational Motor Control from Johns Hopkins University. He is licensed to practice occupational therapy in New York State. Dr. Rao maintains contemporary expertise in his responsibilities by actively engaging in research- he is the site PI for an NIH funded multi-center observational study examining early brain development in young people at risk for Huntington’s disease.

He is the site PI for an NIH funded phase 3 clinical trial of exercise in de novo Parkinson’s disease. He also serves as a mentor for a project funded by the Huntington’s disease Society of America, examining the feasibility of a dance intervention for people with Huntington’s disease. Dr. Rao regularly presents his work at national and international conferences such as the Huntington Study Group, Parkinson Study Group, APTA, International Congress of Movement Disorders. He serves on the scientific advisory committee of the Irving Institute of Clinical and Translational Science at Columbia University Medical Center. He also maintains an active clinical practice through the Huntington’s Disease Center of Excellence, Parkinson’s disease center, Center of Excellence in Alzheimer’s disease at Columbia University Medical Center.

Rami M. Said, PT, DPT, MEng, PhD Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine (Physical Therapy) at CUIMC Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist Director of Physical Therapy Faculty Practices Rami M. Said, PT, DPT, PhD, MEng, is the Director of the Columbia University Physical Therapy Faculty Practices and an Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. A Board-Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist, he provides personalized physical therapy for patients with musculoskeletal, sports, and spine injuries, focusing on improving function, quality of life, and participation in activities. As an educator, Dr. Said teaches Kinesiology, Biomechanics, Therapeutic Exercise, Orthopedics, and Sports Rehabilitation in the Doctoral Program in Physical Therapy. His research interests include developing movement-based injury risk profiles for athletes, utilizing technology to assess biomechanical forces, and advancing physical therapy education.

Samantha A. Sawade, PT, DPT, PCS Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine (Physical Therapy) at CUIMC Board Certified Pediatric Clinical Specialist Samantha Sawade, PT, DPT, PCS is an Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine in the Programs in Physical Therapy at Columbia University. Her research endeavors are in adapted and inclusive physical activity opportunities for people with disabilities. Dr. Sawade has several research projects currently underway, one of which has been accepted for a platform presentation in the upcoming Combined Sections Meeting for the American Physical Therapy Association.

OUR FACULTY Mahlon Stewart, PT, DPT, PhD Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine (Physical Therapy) at CUIMC Board Certified Geriatric Clinical Specialist Director of Clinical Education, Programs in Physical Therapy Dr. Mahlon K. Stewart is an Assistant Professor and Director of Clinical Education at the Programs in Physical Therapy. He received his PhD from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions at the end of 2023 with his research focus on quality of life for the oldest-old aging in New York City. He presented results of his dissertation at the 2024 annual meeting of the American Geriatric Society. In 2024 he was re-certified as an ABPTS Geriatric Clinical Specialist, and he began working with the New York-Presbyterian/CUIMC Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation in developing a transplant prehabilitation program for patients with end-stage liver disease. He and his Research Practicum students are presently investigating potential reasons for gender-based differences in reported life-space scores for community-dwelling old and oldest-old in New York City.

Danielle Struble-Fitzsimmons, PT, DPT, PhD Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine (Physical Therapy) at CUIMC Director of Clinical Education, Programs in Physical Therapy Danielle Struble-Fitzsimmons is an Assistant Professor of Rehab & Regenerative Medicine (PT) and Director of Clinical Education at Columbia University. She was the recipient of a Columbia University Provost Grant for a project entitled, “Incorporating Simulation and Case-Based Learning Strategies to Improve DPT Integumentary Education.” The innovative course design project centered on the Spring 2024 course PHYT M8311: Management of Integumentary Impairments, which focuses on physical therapy management for individuals with integumentary impairments including wounds, burns, and lymphedema. The Provost Grant allowed Dr. Struble-Fitzsimmons to expand the lecture and laboratory components of the course by adding ten diverse skin-tone integumentary-focused anatomic simulation models with related case studies to improve inclusivity, student learning, and alignment with contemporary physical therapist practice. Dr. Struble-Fitzsimmons presented her clinical education focused research project, "Using clinical education data to develop curricular content related to specialized terminal clinical experience placements" as a poster presentation at APTA Combined Sections Meeting (CSM) in Boston in February 2024. She is currently a co-investigator on an IRB-approved study of the new APTA CPI 3.0 with DCE colleagues at Mercy University.

OUR FACULTY Christopher Kevin Wong, PT, PhD Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine (Physical Therapy) at CUIMC Board Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist Coordinator of Orthopedic Residency Curriculum Dr. Wong is Curriculum Coordinator of the Clinical Residency in Orthopedic Physical Therapy and Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. A past recipient of the American Physical Therapy Association Education Section Distinguished Educator Award, he also teaches advanced orthopedics, soft tissue mobilization, and prosthetics in the entry-level DPT Program. His research has been published in over 30 journals including epidemiology and education, biomechanics and sports, and vascular surgery and pain medicine journals. His primary work has been published and presented in national and international physical medicine, physiotherapy, and prosthetics venues. Throughout his career Dr. Wong has maintained an active clinical practice and has been board certification as an orthopedic clinical specialist for over 25 years.

Lisa Yoon, PT, DPT, PCS Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine (Physical Therapy) at CUIMC Board Certified Pediatric Clinical Specialist Dr. Lisa Yoon collaborated with the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Neonatology in the Neonatal Growth and Development Clinic's Cerebral Palsy Early Detection Initiative. This work was highlighted in an oral presentation at the Pediatric Academic Societies and a poster presentation at the inaugural Columbia Children’s Health Innovation and Learning Day in 2024.
