Message From Our Director This year brought its share of challenges, some expected, some character building, and a few that kept us humble, but it also brought tremendous growth. I am continually inspired by an extraordinary team of faculty and staff who manage to be brilliant, compassionate, and collaborative (often all before 9 a.m.), and by students who remind us daily why physical therapy is such a vital and human profession. As we look ahead, we remain committed to innovation—thoughtfully and responsibly incorporating tools such as artificial intelligence to help us work more efficiently, build rich libraries of authentic practice materials, and provide timely, meaningful feedback that augments the expertise faculty already bring to teaching and mentoring. These efforts are not about replacing what makes this program special, but strengthening it, so we can better meet the evolving physical therapy needs of society and plan wisely for the future. If this year has taught us anything, it is that with an exceptional community and a willingness to adapt, we are well prepared for what comes next!

JEAN FITZPATRICK Dr. Jean Fitzpatrick, PT, PhD, is Director of the Programs in Physical Therapy at Columbia, where she also serves as Vice Chair of Rehabilitation & Regenerative Medicine and Assistant Dean in the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. A nationally recognized leader in health education research, she has delivered 30+ invited presentations related to competency-based education frameworks in physical therapy. She co-directs a training program for therapists working with spinal muscular atrophy and serves as CoEditor-in-Chief of the Journal of Clinical Education in Physical Therapy.

Scholarships

Program Provided Scholarships In fiscal year 2025, the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program distributed $623,500 in scholarship support across all three of our cohorts. Potential first year students (Class of 2029) were offered $305,000 through three funding mechanisms, the Lion, merit-based, and the PT Student Scholarships.

Forty awards were granted to 30 students.

The Kindness Cascade The generosity of our alumni continues to shape the future of the physical therapy profession in meaningful and lasting ways. Scholarships made possible through alumni giving provide critical support to our Doctor of Physical Therapy students, allowing them to focus more fully on their education, clinical training, and professional development. As shared in the words of our scholarship recipients, this support eases financial burden, opens doors to opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach, and affirms their sense of belonging within a community that believes in their potential. Alumni-funded scholarships do more than support education, they invest in confidence, resilience, and the next generation of compassionate, highly skilled physical therapists who will carry forward the values of our profession.

The Donna Lynn Mushkin Endowed Fund This endowed fund was established in 2022 by the Louis and Emanuel G. Rosenblatt Foundation, in memory of Donna Lynn Mushkin, a creative young woman who had hoped to dedicate her life to working with physically and emotionally challenged youth. This fund supports an annual $1,500 scholarship to a second year DPT student who has demonstrated significant growth during their tenure with the CUDPT program, in both the didactic and clinical settings.

The William Benham Snow Endowed Fund This endowed fund was established in 1970 and supports an annual $1,500 scholarship to a second year DPT student who has demonstrated significant growth during their tenure with the CUDPT program, in both didactic and clinical settings.

Scholarships

The Dr. Mahlon K. Stewart and Pauline H.M. Frommer Family Scholarship Fund This endowed fund was established in 2024 by Dr. Mahlon K. Stewart, Class of 2008, and his wife, Mrs. Pauline H.M. Frommer, to provide financial assistance for students in the Programs in Physical Therapy, including expenses associated with clinical education placements. The fund supports approximately $20,000 annually in clinical education scholarships.

In 2025, two second year DPT students were recipients of the Mushkin and Snow Scholarships and an additional 6 third year DPT students received a total of $20,000 in Clinical Education Scholarships. By offering scholarships beyond the first year of study, Columbia PT Program demonstrates its commitment to supporting students throughout their journey.

The Dr. George J. Davies Lectureship Fund This endowed fund was established in 2025 to honor the legacy of Dr. Davies (PT Class of 1975) and his commitment to advancing the profession of physical therapy through education, clinical excellence, and research. Funds from this endowment will support an annual lectureship designed to bring together Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students from Columbia University, other DPT program students, program alumni, clinical faculty, and licensed physical therapists from across the profession.

Now more than ever, the generosity of our alumni, grateful patients, and friends of the Columbia University Programs in Physical Therapy is essential to sustaining access to this profession and supporting the next generation of PTs. Recent changes in the federal classification of physical therapy as a graduate program, rather than a professional program, threaten to reduce access to federal loan support for students pursuing a DPT degree, creating financial barriers for many talented and committed future clinicians. While the educational expectations and qualifications of PTs have expanded dramatically since moving to the doctoral level, there have not been commensurate increases in salaries. For Columbia students, these pressures are further intensified by the high cost of living in New York City. Philanthropic support is not simply helpful; it is transformative. Donors such as Dr. Stewart and Pauline H.M. Frommer, Dr. Davies, Dr. Snow and the Rosenblatt Foundation play a vital role in the sustainability and success of our scholarship programs, serving as the heart and backbone that help keep doors open for exceptional students who might otherwise be unable to pursue a career in physical therapy. Their generosity ensures that talent, passion, and potential, rather than financial circumstance, continue to define the future of our profession. Program News

JCEPT Achieves PubMed Central Indexing The Columbia University Journal Partnerships Program supports more than 30 open-access journals, including the Journal of Clinical Education in Physical Therapy (JCEPT). This year, JCEPT reached an exciting milestone by being indexed in PubMed Central (PMC) and continues to showcase high-quality research. Over the past year, the journal recorded more than 8,000 abstract views and article downloads, including work by our own faculty, Drs. Jean Fitzpatrick and Kevin Wong.

Dr. Stewart’s Impact in Pre-Transplant Rehab In October of last year, Dr. Mahlon Stewart began a new role with the New YorkPresbyterian/ CUIMC Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation. He is developing a transplant prehabilitation program, using functional measures to classify patients with end-stage liver disease as frail, pre-frail, or robust. Each patient receives a tailored exercise plan designed to improve functional status, post-transplant outcomes, and survivability.

Dr. Wing Fu Receives Provost’s Large Scale Teaching & Learning Award Dr. Wing Fu was recently selected as the recipient of the Provost’s Large Scale Teaching & Learning Award for her innovative project, “AI-Assisted Coaching: Empowering Academic Success through the Master Adaptive Learner Model.”

Dr. Lisa Yoon Presents at the Spine Symposium Dr. Lisa Yoon presented at the 11th Annual Best-in-Class Symposium on the Non-operative Treatment for Scoliosis, hosted by Columbia Pediatric Orthopedics. Her talk, “Neuromuscular Scoliosis: Key Considerations for the Scoliosis Specialist,” focused on the evaluation and conservative management of scoliosis in individuals with cerebral palsy. She emphasized a holistic, functional approach that prioritizes slowing curve progression, improving posture, breathing coordination, and reducing pain, rather than solely correcting spinal curvature. Dr. Yoon highlighted the importance of postural management, intra-pelvic contributors to scoliosis, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Attendees responded positively to the framework she presented and valued the perspective of a physical therapist specializing in cerebral palsy, as well as learning about the Weinberg Family Cerebral Palsy Center as a clinical resource.

Dr. Fitzpatrick Presents at the Education Leadership Conference (ELC) 2025

Dr. Fitzpatrick led an education session titled "Intended and Unintended Consequences of Competency-Based Education: A Continuous Reflective Critique."

In this session she presented opportunities and challenges in CBEPT through engagement of a panel of DPT program representatives (Columbia University, Creighton University, Washington University in St. Louis, University of Colorado, and North Central College) engaged in a transition to CBEPT. Key strategies were identified to address the most critical intended and unintended consequences of CBEPT, critical faculty development needs, opportunities for collaborative research, and potential strategies were discussed for timely implementation.

Curious Minds Science Zone On September 18, the Programs in Physical Therapy participated in the 2nd Annual Curious Minds Science Zone at 50 Haven Avenue, where Dr. Laurel Abbruzzese and DPT students led handson activities introducing elementary and middle school students to movement science and health-care careers. Our interactive booth featured strength testing, balance and plank challenges, and demonstrations showing how physical therapists help people move, recover, and stay active.

Dr. Brough Defends Dissertation

Colleen M. Brough successfully defended her PhD dissertation, “A Phenomenological Study Exploring the Lived Experiences of Health Professions Education Leaders in Implementing Anti-racist Pedagogy to Address Global Healthcare Disparities.” Her work examines leadership approaches to advancing anti-racist teaching practices and addressing inequities in healthcare education.

Faculty Promotions Dr. Laurel Daniels Abbruzzese, PT, EdD, was promoted to Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine, and Michael Johnson, PT, DSc, was promoted to Associate Professor in Columbia’s Programs in Physical Therapy.

Dr. Abbruzzese serves as Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and Director of the Performing Arts Fellowship, while Dr. Johnson serves as Director of the Orthopedic Residency and specializes in sports and orthopedic physical therapy, injury prevention, and clinical training.

2025 APTA - Orthopedics- Performing Arts (PASIG) Scholarship

The Columbia Dance Research Team, Kavita Sarathy, Juan C. De La Rosa Calvo, Gabriella R. Gavazzi, Haley C. Loeffler, Emma Scholz, and Laurel Daniels Abbruzzese, PT, EdD- was awarded a prestigious scholarship in recognition of their outstanding research poster, “Accessibility of Physical Therapy Care within Collegiate Dance Programs.”

CSM 2025 The Columbia University Programs in Physical Therapy had a notable presence at the 2025 American Physical Therapy Association Combined Sections Meeting. Faculty and students shared their expertise through dynamic educational sessions, poster and platform presentations, and panel discussions, showcasing the depth and impact of our scholarship. The week concluded with a special alumni gathering at The Rustic in Texas, where graduates connected, exchanged stories, and celebrated ongoing success of our program.

White Coat Speaker - Ally Bove Inspired by a family legacy in physical therapy, Ally Bove, Class of 2010, was drawn to the profession for its strong patient relationships and meaningful, long-term impact. Early clinical experiences shaped her research focus on health equity and improving access to high-quality care for all patients.

She values the flexibility of the PT profession and the ability to extend her impact beyond individual patients through teaching and research.

As a proud alumna, Dr. Bove returned as a White Coat Ceremony speaker as part of a new Alumni Association initiative to invite past graduates to serve as speakers and inspire the next generation of physical therapists.

Convocation Awards Debbie Clayton Krasinski Award for Lifetime Achievement Kim Stavrolakes

Kimberly Stavrolakes earned her Master’s degree from LIU in 1991 and has practiced as a physical therapist for 34 years, serving as a dedicated member of the cardiac team at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital while teaching in the entry-level Physical Therapy program for over 25 years. Her extensive expertise in cardiopulmonary care, along with the interdisciplinary team she has assembled annually, has been instrumental in delivering a strong, clinically relevant curriculum that enhances students’ knowledge and practice in the physical therapy management of cardiopulmonary conditions.

Convocation Awards Leadership in Clinical Education Award NewYork Presbyterian Columbia University Irving Medical Center

The Leadership in Clinical Education Award is provided in recognition of outstanding contributions to the clinical education of Columbia University Doctor of Physical Therapy Students. Clinical Education provides students with opportunities to integrate knowledge and develop skills learned in the classroom in a variety of patient care environments. It is an integral part of the education of the entry-level physical therapist and cannot be accomplished without the creation of partnerships with clinical facilities and instructors who value this important component of physical therapy education.

The 2024 award was presented to New York Presbyterian Columbia University Irving Medical Center.

Welcome!

Dr. Jennifer Cunningham

Dr. Cara Kanner

The Programs in Physical Therapy welcomed Dr. Jennifer Cunningham, PT, DPT, GCS, as the new Director of Clinical Education and Assistant Professor. Dr. Cunningham brings extensive experience in acute care and inpatient rehabilitation, along with a longstanding commitment to clinical teaching and student development. A graduate of Northeastern University, she has served as a clinical instructor, adjunct faculty member at Hunter College’s DPT program, and SCCE at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, where she also became rehab supervisor of a CARFaccredited brain injury unit.

Nationally, she has presented on clinical teaching, first clinical experiences, and simulation-based education. She is currently pursuing an EdD at Northeastern University, focusing her research on innovative approaches to clinical education. Dr. Cunningham is deeply inspired by Columbia students' enthusiasm and drive and looks forward to strengthening the bridge between classroom learning and clinical practice.

Outside of work, she enjoys skiing, traveling, and spending time with her husband and three young daughters.

Dr. Cara Kanner joined the Programs in Physical Therapy as an Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine, bringing extensive experience in pediatric clinical care, research, and education. She earned her Doctor of Physical Therapy from SUNY Downstate Medical Center and will be graduating with her EdD at Teachers College this May. A board-certified Pediatric Clinical Specialist since 2020, her clinical work spans a wide range of conditions, including developmental delays, genetic neurodevelopmental disorders, and neuromuscular diseases, with a strong emphasis on caring for patients across the lifespan.

Her research focuses on bone health in individuals with spinal muscular atrophy, and she will present her work on the relationship between muscle volume, function, and strength at the Neuromuscular Study Group Conference this fall.

At Columbia, Dr. Kanner looks forward to expanding her research through collaboration with research practicum students and contributing to the academic community through teaching, mentorship, and interdisciplinary engagement.

Welcome!

Rachel Scott

Rachel Scott joined the Programs in Physical Therapy in July as the Health Professions Education Learning Specialist, bringing expertise in graduate learning, curriculum development, and student support. Her work focuses on how students learn and develop, particularly in the early stages of professional education, and on fostering reflective, independent clinical thinkers.

She holds a Master’s in Digital Technology and Communication in Education from the University of Manchester and is currently completing her PhD in Higher Education, Research, Evaluation, and Enhancement at Lancaster University, where her research explores how feedback, self-assessment, and reflection support transformative learning. Her academic interests include professional identity formation, feedback literacy, and curriculum design that promotes collaboration and a growth mindset.

Before Columbia, Rachel worked as a learning specialist and ESL instructor at a U.S.–serving medical school in the Caribbean. At Columbia, she looks forward to partnering with students and faculty to bridge educational theory and clinical practice and to support a learning environment grounded in reflection, confidence, and continuous growth.

Dr. Ralph Rodriguez-Torres

Dr. Ralph Rodriguez Torres will serve as a Research Physical Therapist in the Programs in Physical Therapy, bringing a strong commitment to pediatric and neuromuscular clinical care and research. A 2020 graduate of Columbia’s DPT program with a strong focus on pediatric and neuromuscular physical therapy and clinical research. His early interest in research began in behavioral psychology and was further shaped during PT school through the research practicum and mentorship with Dr. Jacqueline Montes.

Prior to this position he worked in the pediatric neuromuscular clinic at CUIMC, where he became part of a multidisciplinary research team and served as a clinical evaluator on multiple industry-sponsored clinical trials, while contributing to investigator-initiated studies involving children and adults with rare neuromuscular conditions.

In Fall 2023, he began pursuing a PhD in Kinesiology with a focus on Applied (Exercise) Physiology at Teachers College to deepen his research expertise in movement, exercise, and neuromuscular disease. Now returning to the Programs in Physical Therapy, he looks forward to contributing through clinical care, research, and collaboration.

Research & Grants Faculty Recipient: Dr. Ashwini Rao Funded by: National Institute of Health Title of project: Study in Parkinson’s Disease of Exercise: Phase 3 Clinical Trial Funds: $250,000.00 While medications help alleviate symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (PD), they are not known to slow the rate of disease progression. Aerobic exercise has the most compelling evidence for its potential to slow progression of PD. It is unclear whether moderate or high intensity is more effective for people with Parkinson’s. SPARX3 is the first randomized control trial designed to investigate the effects of moderate and high-intensity aerobic exercise on disease progression in untreated patients with Parkinson’s disease.

Faculty Recipient: Dr. Ashwini Rao Funded by: Huntington’s Disease Society of America Title of project: Movement Intervention for Neurodegenerative Disease: Dance for Huntington’s Disease Funds: $150,000.00 While exercise is recommended for people with Huntington’s Disease (HD), there are no rigorous clinical studies examining the use of dance as an intervention to improve daily functioning and quality of life of those living with HD. Using the framework of the Laban/Bartenieff Movement System, this study will assess safety as well as cognitive and movement benefits of a weekly dance program for people with HD.

Faculty Recipient: Dr. Ashwini Rao Funded by: National Institute of Health Title of project: Growth and Development of Striatal-Cerebellum Circuitry in Subjects at Risk for Huntington’s Disease Funds: $1,500,000.00 HD has long been considered an adult-onset disease. However, research has shown that brain changes are evident before motor symptoms begin. In fact, the gene responsible for HD plays a role in brain development and is present throughout the lifespan. With gene knockdown therapy showing promise for the treatment of HD, it is essential to understand how removing or disabling the gene could impact brain development. This study examines brain development in young people at risk for HD, between the ages of 6 and 30 years.

Systemic racism and provider bias are threats to the health of racial minority groups. Both are overtly linked to poor health outcomes. This work explored the lived experiences of health professions education leaders implementing anti-racist pedagogy to address global healthcare disparities.

Faculty Recipient: Dr. Cara Kanner Funded by: CUPT Faculty Seed Funding Title of project: Factors Associated with Bone Health in Ambulatory Children And Adults with Spinal Muscular Atrophy Funds: $2,500.00 Bone health was explored in 25 individuals with spinal muscular atrophy, as measured by bone marrow adipose tissue and cortical bone area. Associations of bone health to muscle quality and volume were also explored.

Faculty Recipient: Dr. Wing Fu Funded by: Columbia University Office of Provost, Large-Scale Teaching and Learning Grant Title of project: AI-Assisted Coaching: Empowering Academic Success through the Master Adaptive Learner Model Funds: $2,000.00 This initiative combines artificial intelligence (AI) with personalized human coaching to support Doctor of Physical Therapy students experiencing academic difficulties. AI assists coaches in assessing students’ learning behaviors and in generating evidence-based strategies and human coaches interpret and apply these AIgenerated insights through professional judgment and relational engagement.

This workshop aims to gather a multidisciplinary group of experts to address this important topic in SMA care.

Faculty Recipient: Dr. Jacqueline Montes Funded by: Biogen Title of project: Characterizing Perceived Physical Fatigability in NusinersenTreated Adolescents and Adults: The SMA EFFORT Funds: $528,362.00 Physical fatigability are symptoms often experienced by people living with spinal muscular atrophy (pwSMA). While tests completed in the clinic by individuals with SMA highlight that fatigability is an important part of the SMA experience, we do not fully understand how pwSMA experience fatigability with everyday tasks. The SMA EFFORT is a patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) specifically designed for pwSMA and aims to better understand how they feel when completing daily physical activities. This study will incorporate the SMA EFFORT to help us understand the experience of fatigability better in nusinersen treated individuals before and after dosing.

Research & Grants Faculty Recipient: Dr. Jacqueline Montes Funded by: Biogen Title of project: Identification of Gait-Related Digital Biomarkers of Bone Health in Spinal Muscular Atrophy Funds: $511,368.32 People with spinal muscular atrophy are at risk for poor bone health. The requirement of SMN in the bone resorption process as well as muscle weakness, decreased weight bearing and reduced physical activity make bone health a warranted concern for people with SMA. Additionally, people with low bone mass are at increased risk of fracture which can negatively impact quality of life by altering mobility status and independence. This research aims to implement novel, AI-enabled, foot-worn wearable technology (AI-Sole) to measure stride-by-stride spatiotemporal and kinetic gait parameters and establish their utility as sensitive digital mobility outcomes (DMO) to create a fracture risk profile for ambulatory people with SMA.

This research aims to implement novel foot-worn devices that can accurately measure stride-by-stride spatiotemporal and kinetic gait parameters, which can be used as sensitive digital mobility outcomes (DMO) to reflect real-world ambulatory function in individuals with childhood onset NMD.

Faculty Recipient: Dr. Jacqueline Montes Funded by: Genentech (Investigator Initiated Study) Title of project: Mechanisms of Exercise Intolerance and Persistent Fatigue in Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

Funds: $1,238,959.00 This study focuses on the pathophysiological underpinnings of reduced exercise capacity and fatigue in ambulatory patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). There has been laboratory evidence to suggest that the molecular mechanisms underlying mitochondrial biogenesis may be vulnerable to survival motor neuron (SMN) protein deficiency. This is an observational, single visit study including 34 ambulatory SMA patients treated with SMN repletion therapies (risdiplam or nusinersen) for at least 6 months at enrollment.

Laurel Daniels Abbruzzese, PT, EdD Dr. Laurel Daniels Abbruzzese, PT, EdD, is a Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine and Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for Columbia’s Programs in Physical Therapy. She also directs the Performing Arts Fellowship Program and brings over 30 years of clinical experience and 25 years in education. Her scholarship focuses on interprofessional collaboration, anti-racist education, health equity, and performing arts and geriatric rehabilitation. Nationally, she serves as President of the APTA Performing Arts SIG and on the Board of the Physical Therapy Learning Institute.

Colleen M. Brough, PT, DPT, PhD Dr. Colleen Brough, PT, DPT, PhD, is Associate Director of Student Retention and Advancement and an Assistant Professor in Columbia’s Programs in Physical Therapy. A boardcertified orthopedic specialist, she is the Founding Director of Columbia RunLab and teaches in the orthopedic curriculum.

Her research spans orthopedics, oncology, and anti-racist pedagogy in health professions education, and she leads the CancerFIT pro-bono exercise program for patients and survivors.

Jennifer Cunningham, PT, DPT Dr. Jennifer Cunningham, PT, DPT, GCS, is an Assistant Professor and Director of Clinical Education in Columbia’s Programs in Physical Therapy. A board-certified geriatric specialist with 16 years of acute care and inpatient rehabilitation experience, she leads clinical education initiatives and teaches within the Cardiopulmonary and Clinical Education curricula. Her scholarly interests include innovative models of clinical education, interprofessional collaboration, and student development, and she is currently pursuing her EdD in educational leadership.

Lobna S. Elsarafy, PT, DPT, PhD Dr. Lobna Elsarafy, PT, DPT, is an Assistant Professor in Columbia’s Programs in Physical Therapy with over 12 years of experience in neurological rehabilitation. She co-developed the physical activity component of the Multiple Sclerosis Wellness Clinic and teaches neurological rehabilitation and applied physiology. Her research focuses on physical activity, cognition, and outcomes of multidisciplinary wellness programs for individuals with Multiple Sclerosis, and she serves as a reviewer for several rehabilitation journals and national grant programs.

Wing Fu, PT, PhD, MA Dr. Wing Fu, PT, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in Columbia’s Programs in Physical Therapy. She trained at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, NYU, and Nova Southeastern University, and completed a Medical Educator Fellowship with the International Association of Medical Science Educators. With clinical experience across diverse settings, her teaching and research focus on student assessment, clinical reasoning, and innovative strategies including AI and competency-based education.

Michael Gevertzman, PT, DPT, NCS Dr. Michael Gevertzman, PT, DPT, NCS, is an Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine at Columbia.

He earned his DPT at Columbia and is pursuing a PhD at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where his research explores mobility and cognition in Parkinson’s disease. A BoardCertified Neurologic Clinical Specialist and Multiple Sclerosis Certified Specialist, he treats individuals with neurodegenerative disorders and works in Columbia’s Multiple Sclerosis Interdisciplinary Wellness Clinic.

Michael Johnson, MPT, DsC, OCS, SCS Dr. Johnson, PT, DSc, is an Associate Professor in Columbia’s Programs in Physical Therapy and a retired U.S. Army physical therapist with 21 years of service. A graduate of Western University and the Army/Baylor Sports Clinical Residency, he is board-certified in both orthopedics and sports physical therapy. His clinical and research interests include adolescent athletes, injury prevention, diagnostic imaging, and residency and fellowship training.

Cara H. Kanner, PT, DPT, PCS Dr. Cara Kanner, PT, DPT, PCS, is an Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine (Physical Therapy) at CUIMC. She is currently pursuing her terminal EdD in movement sciences, with research interests in neuromuscular disorders and rare diseases, and is passionate about helping children achieve new milestones.

Stacy Kinirons, PT, PhD, MPH Dr. Kinirons, PT, PhD, is an Assistant Professor and Associate Director in Columbia’s Programs in Physical Therapy and brings over 30 years of clinical experience. A highly recognized educator, she has received the Program’s Excellence in Teaching Award for three consecutive years as well as the Columbia University Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching.

Her research focuses on anatomy education and muscle and bone in spinal muscular atrophy.

Jacqueline Montes, PT, EdD, NCS Dr. Jacqueline Montes, PT, EdD, is a Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine at Columbia University and a board-certified neurologic clinical specialist. Her research focuses on gait, fatigue, and outcome measures in neuromuscular diseases such as ALS and SMA, with over 100 peer-reviewed publications. A leader in the international SMA research community, she has helped define standards of care and trained therapists worldwide in clinical trial assessments.

Ashwini K. Rao, OTR, EdD Dr. Rao, PhD, OT, is Director of the EdD in Movement Science at Columbia. He trained in occupational therapy in India and completed his doctorate at Teachers College, Columbia University, with a post-doctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins. His research focuses on aging and degenerative disorders, with an emphasis on early motor impairment and exercise interventions. Clinically, he consults on neurological conditions including Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s, ataxia, and dementia.

Rami M. Said, PT, DPT, MEng Dr. Rami Said, PT, DPT, PhD, MEng, is Director of the Columbia University Physical Therapy Faculty Practices and an Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine. A Board-Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist, he provides personalized care for musculoskeletal, sports, and spine conditions. He teaches Kinesiology, Biomechanics, Therapeutic Exercise, Orthopedics, and Sports Rehabilitation, and his research focuses on athlete injury risk profiling, biomechanical assessment technologies, and innovations in physical therapy education.

Samantha A. Sawade, PT, DPT, PCS Dr. Sam Sawade, PT, DPT, PCS, is an Assistant Professor in Columbia’s Programs in Physical Therapy and a boardcertified pediatric specialist. She completed her pediatric residency and LEND Fellowship at the University of Colorado and Children’s Hospital Colorado. Her expertise includes pediatric pain syndromes and adapted sports for children with disabilities, and she remains active in related research.

At Columbia, she teaches pediatrics and anatomy and sponsors PT CAN, the program’s community service initiative.

Mahlon Stewart, PT, DPT, PhD Dr. Mahlon K. Stewart, PT, PhD, is an Assistant Professor and Director of Clinical Education in Columbia’s Programs in Physical Therapy. A board-certified geriatric specialist, he completed his PhD at Rocky Mountain University studying quality of life in aging populations. His clinical and research focus includes frailty, transplantation, and exercise interventions for older adults. Dr. Stewart is a recipient of multiple national awards and recently established the program’s largest endowed scholarship for physical therapy students.

Danielle Struble-Fitzsimmons, PT, DPT, PhD Dr. Danielle Struble-Fitzsimmons, PT, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine and Associate Director of Student Recruitment in Columbia’s Programs in Physical Therapy. A certified lymphedema specialist with over 20 years of clinical and leadership experience, she earned her PhD in Health Science from Seton Hall University. Her research and presentations focus on clinical education, lymphedema management, cardiopulmonary dysfunction, and mental health.

Christopher Kevin Wong, PT, PhD Dr. Wong, PT, EdD, is a Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at Columbia and founding Curriculum Coordinator of the Orthopedic Residency. He is a board-certified orthopedic clinical specialist with over 25 years of practice and recipient of the APTA Distinguished Educator Award. His research in orthopedics, prosthetics, and education has been published in 30+ journals and cited in clinical guidelines and Medicare policy.

Lisa Yoon, PT, DPT, PCS Dr. Lisa Yoon, PT, DPT, is an Assistant Professor in Columbia’s Programs in Physical Therapy. She has collaborated on the Cerebral Palsy Early Detection Initiative at NewYorkPresbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, resulting in a publication in the Journal of Neonatology. She also completed a year of clinical work at the Weinberg Family Cerebral Palsy Center, treating more than 100 patients across the lifespan.

Gina Frassetto, MPA Gina keeps our finances and administrative matters in order.

She is responsible for the overall administrative and business management of the physical and occupational therapy programs including finance and budget, human resources issues, and contract review for clinical education.

Jason M. Bachan Jason was born and raised in New York and is a marketing and communications specialist for the Programs in Physical Therapy. He oversees marketing initiatives, website content, social media, and media relations, and is currently completing his master’s degree in Strategic Communications at Columbia University. Jason lives in Long Island City with his wife, Tifany.

Stephanie Henkin Buraczewski Born and raised in Manhattan, Stephanie attended Indiana University’s Sports Medicine/Athletic Training program and brings a strong background in sports and physical therapy. Drawing on her own experiences as a patient, she supports students with clinical decision-making and is always known for her humor and approachability. Outside of work, she is an avid equestrian, a proud pet parent, a Broadway enthusiast, and a frequent source of show recommendations.

Aimee DeGrazia Aimee is a proud New Yorker with Dominican roots who was raised in Queens and has lived in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

With over 22 years of experience working in a plastic surgeon’s office, she brings a strong work ethic, compassion, and wit to her role as admissions coordinator. Inspired by her own physical therapy experience after a knee injury, she is committed to supporting future PTs in their educational journeys. Outside of work, she enjoys reading, especially Jack Reacher novels, salsa dancing, where she met her fiancé, and staying healthy through weekly meal prep.

Nicole Lockwood Nicole is an experienced administrative and financial professional with over 13 years of experience in higher education. She supports faculty and leadership in Columbia University’s Programs in Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy, managing scheduling, travel, financial coordination, onboarding, and daily operations, and is known for her organized, dependable, and collaborative approach.

Rachel Scott Rachel is the Health Professions Education Learning Specialist for the Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Programs at Columbia University, supporting students through evidenceinformed learning and test-taking guidance. With over 25 years of international experience in education, she is currently pursuing PhD research focused on Professional Identity Formation. Outside of work, she enjoys NYC’s arts scene, Columbia athletics, and life in the city with her daughter and cat, Katsuki.
