KNOW YOUR IMPACT RESPECT AND

PROTECT OUR COMMUNITIES

PRESERVE OUR SPACES FOR GENERATIONS TO COME

In the awe-inspiring landscapes of British Columbia, recreational wonders captivate both visitors and residents alike. Yet, the surge in visitors and the expanding population has placed a strain on many communities, evoking a sense of pressure.

Amidst this, the places we cherish face a looming threat from disrespectful, negligent, and inconsiderate behavior. The privilege of basking in the beauty of these spaces and experiencing the vibrancy of our communities is at stake — a privilege we risk losing if we do not change our ways. It’s time to embrace collective responsibility and take proactive steps toward positive transformation, a call to action that extends to locals and residents alike.

In recognizing that we are all guests on these sacred lands and waters, let us pledge to honour the people, wildlife, natural spaces, and communities. The journey ahead beckons for mindful exploration and conscientious stewardship, as we strive to preserve these cherished spaces for generations to come. Together, let us roll up our sleeves and be the guardians of the legacy that surrounds us.

STAY AWARE. PLAN AHEAD.

AND FIND YOURSELF IN THE SHUSWAP

Far from ordinary and closer than you think, welcome here. The heart of the traditional territories of the Secwepemc, the meeting of the waters, the Shuswap is a place of gathering. We celebrate the pairing of meaningful experiences. Cycle to a vineyard or paint at the pub, paddle to the park or soak to the hot pools. We live to explore. And every day with us means you’ll find a little more.

It’s a place for families, where you can jump into warm waters from the deck of a houseboat or wander through the woods. A place where you can float down the river or bike down the pier where ice cream is in store. Comb the beach or drive a go-kart. Stay up late and gaze at the stars or get up early when the fish start.

It’s a place for flavour where you can taste great wines, spirits, craft ciders and beers, explore farmers’ fields and delight in a delicious meal. A place to revel in culture and community; art in the park, music by the shore or lively local theatre.

It’s a place for adventure where you can change into your hiking shoes, biking shoes, snow shoes, or, bury your toes in the sand and do nothing more. Find hidden natural treasures, witness the amazing cycle of the salmon, and marvel at the beauty of it all.

It’s a place of wonder. From scintillating sunrises to spectacular stargazing, you’ll find experiences to soothe your soul, inspire ideas and mark memorable moments that will last a lifetime.

TEN THOUSAND YEARS YOUNG

The SecwEpemc First Nation

The history of THE SECWépemc Peoples in the Shuswap dates back over 10,000 years.

HEAR THE LEGENDS FROM KNOWLEDGE KEEPERS.

Come hear the legends and tour the traditional lands and waters of the Secwépemc people, learn the history from local Knowledge Keepers, enjoy traditional feasts of bannock and salmon, admire traditional crafts or join in a local pow wow. Find the deep meaning and powerful lessons of this sacred homeland.

The area is named after the Secwépemc, an important Salish nation that has always inhabited the BC interior. Come live this history. The stories of the Secwépemc people are woven together by their history, legends, water, animals, and land. To understand Secwépemc stories you must understand the journeys they have taken from generation to generation and how it has shaped the culture today.

In the Shuswap, there is one nation and four bands each unique and deeply connected to the lands and the waters. In fact, ‘Shuswap’ means meeting of the waters and this sacred watershed is a legacy that we all work to honour and preserve.

Year-round, you can visit a kekuli and take in the stories of the Secwépemc people or experience a healing ceremony in a sweat lodge. In the summer months, experience a traditional journey by canoe. Follow the path of ancestors to truly appreciate the importance of the Shuswap through its legends and stories, the greatest of which is the enduring life cycle of the sockeye salmon.

CELEBRATE THE ADAMS RIVER

SOCKEYE SALMON RUN

During October, the banks of the Adams River, 405 km inland from the Pacific Ocean, host a natural miracle

Each fall, the quiet waters of the Adams River welcome Sockeye salmon returning to their home waters to spawn. The fish are completing a journey that takes them far out into the Pacific, then upstream against swift currents and rapids all the way up to Alaska and the Aleutian Islands and back again, traveling over 4,000 kms in their lifetime. The Adams River is one of the most important Sockeye salmon breeding areas in North America.

Various other species also return to the Adams River throughout the summer and fall. Watch for Pink, Chinook, and Coho salmon, as well as Rainbow trout and Steelhead trout. View the salmon and

other species from the banks of the Adams River, in Tsútswecw Provincial Park, where you can also explore 26 km of trails offering other exceptional salmon viewing opportunities.

This salmon run has helped to sustain the local Indigenous communities for thousands of years. The Little Shuswap Band and the Adams River Salmon Society host the “Salute to the Sockeye” celebration to celebrate the importance of the salmon to the history and culture of the local Secwépemc people and to the local environment.

GATHER ROUND FOR SOME SHUSWAP

SOUND

AND LET THE MUSIC PLAY

Save the last weekend in July for Salmon Arm’s acclaimed ROOTSandBLUES festival — a highlight of BC’s music scene. The ROOTSandBLUES festival showcases some of the world’s best blues, world, folk, zydeco, alternative, funk, and reggae music, all in the welcoming, visually arresting setting of the Shuswap!

This incredibly popular outdoor music festival draws over 25,000 enthusiastic attendees and features musicians from Canada and around the world. The festival has become a prominent link on the national festival circuit and is considered among the top roots festivals in Canada.

The sounds are great, the atmosphere is incomparable, and there’s music and activities for all members of the family. Children 12 and under admitted free with adults.

In many ways, music is the heartbeat of our communities as we gather regularly for the small hall music crawl, rural coffee houses, symphony and choir performances, and music in the parks most every night in the summer. The talent and passion of our musicians and singers ensures we’ve always got our groove on. If music is your thing too, come visit and be sure to grab a selfie with what we think is the world’s largest (and most awesome) treble clef sculpture in downtown Salmon Arm.

EXPLORE NEW TERRAIN

UNPARALLELED WINTER adventure

Discover unparalleled powder, groomed areas, challenging climbs, and fun bowls to play in all across the Shuswap. Varied terrain means there’s a magical, memorable ride waiting for everyone: new sledders, touring families, fun riders and thrill-seekers alike. There are daily trail fees in effect in some areas to assist with grooming costs provided by the local clubs.

Nestled in the Eagle Valley, the Sicamous area hosts some of the best alpine snowmobiling in Western Canada. Deep snow, powder filled open bowls, endless meadows, groomed trails, breathtaking alpine scenery and spectacular lake views. From Sicamous you can access Blue Lake, Eagle Pass, Owlhead and Queest on regularly groomed forest service roads. Each area has a cozy cabin to warm up in.

From Salmon Arm, follow groomed trails from Fly Hills to Skimikin, and free-ride through open meadows and clear cuts, and rest in one of several warming huts.

For truly unforgettable sledding, venture to open, undulating, high alpine meadows at Crowfoot in the North Shuswap. This remote area features the Grizzly Lodge, one of BC’s most desirable sled-in lodges.

It is always a smart idea to check the status of the snow pack. Visit sledsicamous.com for trail and weather details, and visit avalanche.ca for snow and avalanche updates.
