FROM THE MANAGER

Dear Reader,

W

hether you are a citizen of Columbia County or visiting with us for a while, I hope you love Columbia County as much as I do!

Columbia County, Georgia is a thriving community, and currently, one of the fastest growing counties in the state of Georgia and the country, with a population nearing 155,000. Columbia County offers a wonderful quality of life; from our parks, greenspace and fun community events to our many friendly neighborhoods.

Columbia County is currently working on several large projects, many of which positively impact our Community and Leisure Services division. The Performing Arts Center construction began early in 2018 with the completion date for the $34 million project set for fall 2020. The new Grovetown Library construction has begun and this $3.5 million project will be complete early 2020.

There are currently four park projects underway. The upgrades to Patriots Park will include new fields, new concession and bathroom facilities, additional parking and full park connectivity. The Lakeside Park facility will include additional fields for recreation activities, tennis courts and a playground. Two new parks, the Gateway Park and the Plaza Park, will be great additions for citizens to enjoy.

COMMUNITY & LEISURE SERVICES

Experience Columbia County Each year, the Columbia County Community Events team welcomes over 100,000 patrons to more than 30 events, all held in parks throughout Columbia County. From familiar holiday events such as the annual Easter Egg Scramble and BOOM! in the Park, to family-friendly movie nights and markets, there is something for everyone! 2020 will not be the exception. Here’s what’s ahead:

Experience Evans April 3-5 Back by popular demand is the World’s Largest Bounce House – Big Bounce America!

will be held every other Saturday morning on Evans Town Center Boulevard during the Spring and Fall. Beginning April 4th, local producers, artisans and small businesses will be on site selling their goods and merchandise. Patrons will also be treated to live music and various children’s activities. A full schedule for the Market can be found online.

2019’s nearly sold-out event is even BIGGER and better in 2020. This year, The Big Bounce America will be joined by The Giant, the World’s Longest Inflatable Obstacle Course!

On April 3rd, 4th and 5th, patrons will be able to attend a 3-hour session during which they will have access to both of these attractions as well as the popular Bounce Village. Allages and adult-only sessions will be offered. The event will be rounded out with vendors, live music, face painting, a petting zoo, train rides, margarita bars and more. Shoes off, party on!

pleasing events will be included in Columbia County’s 2020 Summer Concert Series! Invite your friends to spend an afternoon in Margaritaville and dance in the sand while you soak in the sounds of summer. Ticket information coming soon.

Pops in the Park - Classic Rock Edition.

Join us for a night with Columbia County Schools’ best and brightest musicians, led by guest conductors Wes York and Dr. Cynthia Johnson-Turner, Director of Bands at UGA. This annual event will feature the sounds of classic rock

and promises to be a memorable experience, not only for those lucky enough to take the stage, but also for those in attendance. Come and enjoy an interactive musical experience as well as family-friendly activities and a fireworks finale. Headline act to be announced in the Spring. Additional information can be found online.

YOUTH Sports

Registration for spring sports will run January 27th through February 7th. The list of offerings for Spring sports are as follows: T-ball – Coed 4Tball and 5/6 Tball Baseball – 7/8 Coach pitch up to 13-14 Softball – 7/8 Coach pitch up to 13/14 Soccer – U6 to U18

Volleyball – Girls 9-15 Tennis – Ages 6-15 Flag Football – Age Divisions TBD

Evaluations will be held for all leagues (except tennis) for ages 9 and up.

• Summer Basketball for ages 9-15 will register April 20th – May 1st, 2020.

All games and practices will be held at Bobby Waters Gymnasium at Patriots Park • Fall Sports Registration will run from July 27th – August 7th, 2020.

Sport offerings for the fall season include Football, Soccer, Baseball, Softball, Volleyball, and Tennis

SUMMER Camps Registration begins April 20th and closes one week prior to the camp or whenever full.

June 1-5 - Baseball and Tennis June 8-12 – Football and Volleyball June 15-19 – Soccer and Tennis June 22-26 – Basketbal and Softball

The beautiful reception and pre-function areas greet visitors with high ceilings and grand Palladian windows. No matter what type of large event you are planning, this open trade show space offers 34’ high ceilings with light colored walls and finished concrete flooring which is perfect for various exhibitions, tournaments, and forums alike. Eubank Blanchard Center 6868 Cobbham Road, Appling Looking to get out of town? Built in 1995, this venue is situated a stone’s throw away from Pollard’s Corner in Appling, GA. It is an intimate venue, perfect for small parties, family reunions, weddings and receptions. The interior has a capacity of 75 seated; however, the construction of a covered pavilion offers seating for an additional 28 guests at picnic tables.

Summer Learning 2020 Imagine Your Story Featured Library Events Fairy Tales/Mythology/Fantasy Dates TBD Over 5,000 children, teens and adults participated for in 2019 Universe of Stories summer learning event. Make plans this summer to join us for our 2020 program!

AARP Tax-Aide with TCE & VITA Feb. 1 through April 15.

The program offers free tax preparation assistance. Tax-Aide has helped more than 68 million low- and moderate-income taxpayers. You don’t have to be an AARP member, and there’s no age requirement to get tax help from IRS-certified volunteers.

Must qualify for one of the following programs: • Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) A federal grant program provides tax preparation assistance to those 60 and older from IRS-certified volunteers.

•

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) A federal grant program, IRS-certified VITA volunteers provide tax preparation services to older Americans, low- and moderate-income filers, people with disabilities and those with limited English language skills. Generally, taxpayers must have an annual income below $55,000 to qualify.

• Columbia County Library This assistance begins on February 1st and is offered every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at the Columbia County Library through April 14 - 9am – 3pm
