Mike Briglia bought the business from long time candy maker Michael Altmarie in 1979. One-hundred years after America entered WWI, around when Altmarie made his first hard candies, Michael and Frank Briglia are still carrying on the business. Michael, the owner, and Frank, the chief confectioner, haven’t merely continued making peppermints and candy canes from Altmarie’s century-old recipes. They’ve grown and retained the name of their mentor’s wholesale hard candy business, Altmarie’s Candy Company. But they also opened a retail shop, Michael’s
Candy Corner, and become chocolatiers, blending black and brown blocks of Belgian chocolate. After his short-lived journalism career he returned to Kingston to care for his sick mom and decided to try retail. He bought and ran the tiny, 600-square-foot candy shop in the Kings Mall. In November 1993 New York Times spread featured the brothers’ candy canes, and everyone from Martha Stewart to Oprah came calling during the holidays. Disney stuffs the brothers’ candy canes into Christmas stockings. The brothers expanded the shop’s candy selection, add chocolate with the help of chocolatier Bruce Meckas in 1985, and moved to the Kingston corner of St. James Street and Broadway in 1998. Altmarie’s still has it’s 10 original hard candy flavors – peppermint, wintergreen, spearmint, root beer, anise, cinnamon, clove, orange, lime and cherry. The shop employs three to nine people depending on the season. After all these years, Michael, 68, and Frank, 57, are neither tired of each other nor sick of chocolate. “I still have a blast,” Michael said, “like when we get a celebrity ordering, and it’s cool knowing your stuff went to them.” This week the brothers are feverishly making chocolate bunnies, eggs and Passover delights.

Marji Zintz is a solo vocalist/arranger/acoustic guitarist who is known for her sweet voice; heart-felt, soulful interpretations; spoton intonation; extensive, genre-busting repertoire; and masterful guitar playing. She uses the guitar to its fullest potential
as a melodic, harmonic, and percussive instrument. Most of her performing career has been as a solo interpreter, crossing in and out through a few different genres covering a wide range of material from folk to rock to jazz, including Tom Waits, Cole Porter, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Jeff Entin is a life-long musician, well known for his prowess on the guitar as well as his singing and engaging song writing. His talents and genial stage presence guarantees a wonderful performance experience.
