Flooded with Flood Animals

The Ulster County SPCA takes great pride in having the only Humane Law department in the county, but that doesn’t mean our help is geographically restricted. In July, the shelter helped rescue 38 animals from a West Virginia shelter that was dealing with fallout from deadly flooding.

“Regardless of our territory, we are an animal welfare organization and that is always our greatest concern,” said Executive Director Adam Saunders. “We help as many animals as we possibly can. Particularly in times of natural disasters I think it’s imperative that shelters help each other.”

It’s a long drive from the Hudson Valley to West Virginia, but it’s one that Saunders was happy to make in order to rescue 19 dogs and 19 cats. On his way back, Saunders met with other animal rescue groups who took some of the transported animals.

Bob The UCSPCA housed the remaining 10 cats and 10 dogs; while that may not sound like a large number, it has a huge impact on a small shelter—increasing the number of animals we’re caring for by over 10 percent.

It takes all hands on deck to house, clean, and care for the additional animals. But, as Kennel Supervisor Rachel Kincheloe said, “We’re always happy to help any area or any state that needs assistance.” With limited space, the staff found creative solutions; training rooms and administrative space became doggy dorms overnight.

“In this type of emergency, volunteers become even more important than usual because they walk and socialize our resident dogs,” Kincheloe said. “We are so focused on the new dogs that we need people to work with the others.”

On the long ride home Saunders was joined in the front seat by a dog named Bob, a last-minute addition to the transport that Saunders requested because he otherwise would’ve been euthanized. Bob came with a litany of ailments (part of the reason he was on death row), but he is simply a microcosm of what happens when a shelter becomes involved in a rescue. It is impossible to say no to a sad face, and so Bob, unknown ailments and all, has become part of the shelter family.

“Some of the dogs, including Bob, will probably need some extra TLC,” said Saunders. “But we’ll do what we always do: get them healthy, happy, and into a forever home.”
