The “Old King Cole” Mural
Maxfield Parrish’s “Old King Cole” was commissioned in 1906 by Colonel John Jacob Astor IV for the original Knickerbocker Hotel, where the mischievous monarch and his courtiers presided over the hotel’s bar until Prohibition closed it in the 1920s. The mural, nearly 30 feet long, became famous not only for Parrish’s glowing colors and fanciful style but also for the playful legend that the king’s knowing smirk was inspired by Astor himself—supposedly sitting for the figure. After changing hands several times, the mural found its permanent home in the King Cole Bar at The St. Regis New York in 1932, where it remains a celebrated centerpiece and one of the city’s most enduring works of public art.
La Maisonette
Inspired by the hotel’s original 1910s breakfast room, La Maisonette is rich in historic legacy yet effortlessly contemporary. It beautifully blends the storied luxury of St. Regis with lightness and charm—a perfect retreat for social gatherings or peaceful solitude alike.
