1. Montauk Point Lighthouse museum Welcome to the world-famous Montauk Point Lighthouse, New York State’s oldest lighthouse. Located at the tip of eastern Long Island, the lighthouse provides 360° views of Block Island Sound, the Atlantic Ocean and beyond. No visit to Montauk is complete without experiencing the top of the Montauk Lighthouse. Authorized by Congress in 1792, Montauk Point Lighthouse was built in 1796 and first lit in 1797. The Lighthouse had an attachment to keeper’s dwelling completed in 1838, which is now referred as the 1838 Building. Over the next hundred years, the lighthouse added two Fresnel lens, a new dwelling, a fog signal, and an incandescent vapor lamp. After the lighthouse was electrified in 1940, the US Army occupied Montauk Lighthouse during WWII as part of the Eastern Coastal Defense Shield. In 1987, the lighthouse was automated, its buildings were leased to Montauk Historical Society, and the Montauk Point Lighthouse Museum opened. The Secretary of the Interior made the Montauk Point Lighthouse as a National Historic Landmark in 2012.

2. Ditch Plains Popular with surfers, Ditch Plains is two miles east of Montauk on the ocean with parking by permit only at two parking areas. The super long break makes surfing ideal for newbies or veteran long-boarders. This iconic beach has beautiful cliffs rising at its western end at Shadmoor Park.
3. Deep Hollow Ranch When you say the word ‘ranch’, you usually do not think of Long Island’s east end, yet that is where America’s oldest ranch is found–at the tip of Long Island in Montauk. Established in 1658, Deep Hollow Ranch was initially used by the Montaukett tribe to pasture cattle. With a list of the stock kept on the fatting field, Deep Hollow’s keeper rode out to check on and round up the cattle. Those actions provided the basis for the idea of a cowboy. In 1898, Teddy Roosevelt disbanded his Rough Riders at Deep Hollow. In 1971, Randy Leaver bought the concession to the ranch and developed the ranch to what it is today. He brought in fifty Black Angus cattle and leased another 4,000 acres for trail riding. Chuck wagon rides, Texas BBQs, rodeos, and benefit concerts became big attractions. Leaver passed the ranch and concession to Pat and Cate Keogh in 2010. The Keoghs hope to expand the ranch with a Center for Wildlife Rescue, and renovations to the cabins and Third House for future guest use. It looks as if Deep Hollow Ranch is set for quite some time to come.

Other famous faces who have popped in include Celine Dion, Julianne Moore, Matthew Broderick, and Leo DiCaprio. John gives credit to the cooking combination of himself and its cook Joe Cronin for the taste of their traditional pancakes to their more ambitious offerings, such as a peanut butter and chocolate chip combo. Built atop Signal Hill, the 200-room English Tudor Hotel was a castle that was the essence of luxury. Now, this national landmark has been restored to its original splendor and beauty, giving people the chance to live in Fisher’s “Castle on the Hill” in Montauk, New York. The Manor contains 140 condominium apartments, an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, a health club, and three tennis courts. Hotel services are available, and residents can enjoy Montauk Manor’s trademark deluxe service. Apartments range from studio to deluxe three bedrooms, with many rooms including a private terrace or balcony. There are a variety of layouts, and all but the studio units are available as simplex or duplex. They take pride in welcoming you to Carl Fisher’s most splendid resort…The Montauk Manor.
18. Montauk Community Church When Montauk was being developed in 1927, there was no provision for the yearround worship of God in the village. With that in mind, the varied denominational backgrounds of Montauk residents made it obvious to establish an interdenominational church–a community church for Montauk, or “Montauk Community Church.” While its congregation held its services in the Montauk Theatre from its inception in 1927 until 1929, the Community Church’s own church building was in the process of being built and furnished. When that building was completed in 1929 by the Pearson Construction Company, it was seen as a splendid church centrally located on top of a shining hill.
Color Montauk is filled to the brim with the village’s most iconic settings, such as Deep Hollow Ranch, Montauk Downs, Ditch Plains and Montauk Point Lighthouse, among many others.
Through its beautiful black-and-white line drawings and detailed descriptions, “Color Montauk” masterfully highlights what makes this village the eastern gem of the Hamptons.
