WELCOME Dear Friends, Welcome to the Colorado Symphony’s 103rd season.

As I begin my second season as Music Director, I find myself reflecting with deep gratitude on all we experienced together over the past year. We shared unforgettable performances here in Boettcher Concert Hall, introduced the Colorado Symphony to new audiences during our sold-out New York tour with Gregory Alan Isakov at Radio City Music Hall, and had the privilege of performing with my dear friend Itzhak Perlman at Carnegie Hall. This summer, we were honored to join the incomparable Yo-Yo Ma for extraordinary evenings at Red Rocks Amphitheatre and the Ford Amphitheater in Colorado Springs. These remarkable milestones affirmed something I have long believed: the Colorado Symphony stands among the very finest orchestras in the country, distinguished not only by the extraordinary artistry of its musicians, but also by their passion, curiosity, and unwavering commitment to every performance.

That spirit continues to inspire every program we’ve created for the season ahead.

Music has an incredible ability to move us — to spark joy, inspire reflection, offer comfort, and bring us together in ways few other experiences can. That idea is at the heart of our 2026/27 Season, Music That Moves You. MUSICIAN SPOTLIGHT

Brook Ferguson Principal Flute Long before she became Principal Flute of the Colorado Symphony, Brook Ferguson was surrounded by music growing up in Manassas, Virginia. Family jam sessions filled the house with bluegrass, and car rides often turned into joyful singalongs with her mom and sisters. Looking back, she now realizes those informal moments played a big role in shaping both her ears and her love of making music.

It was also understood in that environment whether a musician could really play or not. Practicing to reach a high standard never had to be spoken because it was implied, and it became a source of pride for her and her family.

Her path to the flute came from an unexpected place. Rather than discovering it through classical music, Brook fell in love with the instrument’s unmistakable sound in 1970s rock recordings, songs like Color My World, and even Saturday morning cartoons. Its bright, lyrical voice captivated her, and she loved that it offered something entirely different from the music everyone else in her family was playing.

That sense of curiosity has guided a career that has earned national acclaim.

Described by The Washington Post as “brilliantly virtuosic,” Brook won the National Flute Association’s Young Artist Competition before going on to perform as a concerto soloist with the Colorado Symphony, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, ROCO, and the New World Symphony. She has appeared at leading festivals including Aspen, Tanglewood, and Marlboro, and is widely recognized for championing new music, helping premiere dozens of works by composers from around the world.

Brook joined the Colorado Symphony as Principal Flute in 2010 and has served in the same role with Houston’s innovative River Oaks Chamber Orchestra since 2012. Whether performing Mozart, Nielsen, a world premiere, or an orchestral masterwork, she brings the same spirit of exploration to every performance.

Offstage, Brook’s playlist is just as adventurous as her performing career. She doesn’t believe in musical boundaries, happily moving from Motown and 90s hip-hop to jazz, rock, grunge, and North Indian classical music. For Brook, great music is simply great music, regardless of genre.

QUICK TAKES Favorite composer: Claude Debussy. His music lives in that magical space between structure and improvisation, and I’m always drawn to how he absorbed influences like Indonesian music and transformed what the flute could be. As a flutist, I don’t think there’s a richer palette of colors to explore. At the same time, there’s such clarity in his writing that I find irresistible. Every time I return to his music, I notice something new—it never gets old.

A piece you’ll never get tired of playing: Debussy’s Sonate pour flûte, alto et harpe (L. 137). It feels like a conversation that’s always evolving—no two performances are ever quite the same. There’s something so special about how it sounds spontaneous while still being so perfectly crafted.

I’m especially excited to perform it with violist Phillip Stevens and harpist Courtney Hershey Bress on April 11, 2027, as part of the Colorado Symphony’s Chamber Music Series at the Studio Loft at the Ellie Caulkins Theatre.

Currently listening to: A little bit of everything. My playlists jump from avant-garde contemporary music to Gen Z artists, 90s hip hop, Motown, R&B, rock, jazz—and Opie Gone Bad, whose front man is my partner Jake Schroeder (I love his voice). I also spend a lot of time listening to master tabla players from North Indian classical music—the rhythmic language is endlessly fascinating and always seems to reset my ears. Most days, I’m listening to whatever I’m studying or whatever happens to spark my curiosity.

Hidden talent: Curiosity might be my hidden talent. I love falling down research rabbit holes— whether it’s a forgotten Baroque opera, World War II history, governance, neuroscience, or flute acoustics. I genuinely enjoy connecting dots that others might not notice. I’m also pretty tenacious when it comes to improving social inclusion and gender parity in our field—there’s still a lot of work to do. And I love fixing things. I maintain my own flutes and have studied with incredible acousticians and repair specialists because I’m fascinated not just by how things work, but why they work.

Favorite Colorado spot: Home. We live in Golden, right where the foothills begin, and I never take for granted how beautiful it is. Whether I’m in the garden, by our pond, having coffee on the patio, or heading out for a hike, it’s where I feel most like myself. I also love the soundtrack of our neighborhood—train whistles from the Colorado Railroad Museum, Coors trains rolling by in the distance, and live music drifting over from New Terrain Brewing. Those sounds make life here feel uniquely ours and remind me every day why Colorado is such a special place to call home.

BUILDING MOMENTUM

Momentum Builds for the Colorado Symphony’s Next Chapter

By Nick Dobreff As we welcome you to a new season at Boettcher Concert Hall, it’s worth taking a moment to reflect on the extraordinary momentum carrying the Colorado Symphony into the year ahead.

Over the past twelve months, we’ve celebrated remarkable artistic achievements, strengthened our connection to the community, and earned national recognition that has elevated the Colorado Symphony to new heights. Each milestone has reinforced something we’ve long believed: when a community invests in the arts, everyone benefits.

Perhaps no moment better symbolized that momentum than Denver voters’ overwhelming approval of the Vibrant Denver Bond in November 2025, which included a historic $20 million investment toward the future renovation of Boettcher Concert Hall. The measure represents a vote of confidence in the power of the arts to strengthen our community and create a vibrant downtown, city, and state for generations to come.

We celebrated that milestone alongside Mayor Mike Johnston, members of Denver City Council, and civic leaders from across the city during a sold-out performance with Colorado favorites DeVotchKa. As Mayor Johnston joined President & CEO

“When the Colorado Symphony thrives, Denver thrives.”

That vision took another major step - Mayor Mike Johnston forward on August 24, 2026, when Denver City Council approved a landmark funding agreement between the City of Denver, Denver Arts & Venues, and the Colorado Symphony that establishes the foundation for Boettcher Concert Hall’s future. Under the agreement, the City of Denver has committed $105 million toward the approximately $120 million renovation, while the Symphony has committed to raising $15 million through naming opportunities within the renovated hall. The agreement gives the Symphony the ability to offer these naming opportunities and establishes the framework for how the fundraising and investment will work together.

In practical terms, it turns the community’s $20 million Vibrant Denver Bond investment into a clear path toward a transformational renovation that will preserve Boettcher Concert Hall as the home of the Colorado Symphony while creating a more welcoming, accessible, and vibrant place for audiences, artists, and the entire Denver community.

The Colorado Symphony’s 2025/26 Season was one of the orchestra’s most memorable, with a number of memory making events and community collaborations.

BUILDING MOMENTUM In January, the Colorado Symphony embarked on one of the most significant moments in its history: a landmark New York City tour. After a sold-out sendoff concert at Boettcher Concert Hall, the orchestra performed two sold-out evenings with Gregory Alan Isakov at Radio City Music Hall before taking the stage at Carnegie Hall with violin legend Itzhak Perlman. It was, in many ways, our Super Bowl moment, and a once in a generation chance to showcase the artistry of Colorado’s orchestra on some of the world’s most iconic stages.

The community’s support was equally evident in May during the Symphony in the City Gala, when a sold-out performance featuring the incomparable Jon Batiste helped raise more than $1 million in support of the Symphony’s artistic, educational, and community programs. That extraordinary generosity ensures we can continue bringing world-class music to audiences throughout Colorado while inspiring the next generation through music education and community engagement.

The orchestra also found itself at the center of some The Colorado Symphony performs at the Denver Summit’s of Colorado’s biggest inaugural home game at Empower Field at Mile High on March cultural moments. Musicians 28, 2026. performed at the first kit reveal for Denver’s new National Women’s Soccer League club, the Summit, at Denver’s Union Station; performed the National Anthem at the club’s inaugural home match at Empower Field at Mile High which was played before the largest crowd in NWSL history; and heralded the opening of the team’s new CommonSpirit Performance Center. Colorado sports fans also saw the Symphony featured in the Colorado Avalanche’s pregame entrance video, with the orchestra performing Grieg’s iconic In the Hall of the Mountain King as part of the team’s dramatic pregame presentation.

As the season drew to a close, Gustav Mahler’s Second Symphony, “Resurrection,” provided a fitting finale. The work’s themes of renewal, hope, and transformation resonated, not only for the orchestra, but for downtown Denver itself. Following years of change and challenge following the COVID-19 pandemic, both the Colorado 18

Symphony and the city we proudly call home are experiencing a renewed sense of optimism, energy, and possibility.

Just days later, a remarkable season concluded beneath Colorado skies with two unforgettable performances of Dvořák’s Cello Concerto featuring the legendary Yo-Yo Ma at Red Rocks Amphitheatre and Ford Amphitheater in Colorado Springs.

These were memory-making celebrations of music and the extraordinary places that make Colorado unique.

Each year, the Colorado Symphony generates more than $57 million in economic activity for downtown Denver while supporting 377 jobs. Beyond the concert hall, our education and community engagement initiatives serve nearly 41,000 students annually, helping ensure that the next generation can discover the transformative power of live music.

The future is even brighter. Studies consistently show that renovated concert halls often experience attendance increases of 10 to 25 percent, underscoring the tremendous opportunity that lies ahead for the planned renovation of Boettcher Concert Hall and the audiences we serve.

Claude Sim Associate Concertmaster At just 21 years old, Claude Sim was appointed Associate Concertmaster of the Colorado Symphony, a position he still holds more than two decades later. While that’s impressive enough on its own, it only scratches the surface of one of the orchestra’s most adventurous musicians.

Claude’s musical world extends far beyond the concert hall. A lifelong believer that great music has no boundaries, he’s performed everything from Beethoven to bluegrass, Argentine tango to jazz, and rock alongside artists including Béla Fleck, Leslie Odom Jr., Warren Haynes, Guster, and Denver favorites DeVotchKa. He’s even released albums of both tango and American Songbook jazz standards.

His musical curiosity started early. Growing up outside Chicago, Claude began piano and violin lessons at age three, but he was equally captivated by blues, hard rock, jazz, and bluegrass. He later picked up mandolin after discovering Bill Monroe and played electric bass in his high school jazz band, inspired by legendary bassist Jaco Pastorius. Ask him who influenced him most growing up, though, and you might be surprised: Michael Jordan. Claude still points to Jordan’s work ethic and leadership as qualities he strives to bring to every rehearsal and performance.

The son of immigrants from Hong Kong and Taiwan, Claude credits his parents’ determination and love of classical music for setting him on his path. Their belief in education, opportunity, and the arts eventually led him to the Oberlin Conservatory and, ultimately, to Colorado.

When he’s not performing on stage, Claude enjoys sharing his passion for music with the next generation, having taught at universities across Colorado, including the University of Colorado Boulder, Colorado State University, and the University of Colorado Denver.

Whether he’s performing a concerto, improvising jazz, or exploring a new musical collaboration, Claude brings the same spirit of curiosity that has defined his career from the very beginning.

Colorado Symphony Guild Makes Record Contribution to the Orchestra

For Colorado Symphony patrons, no visit to Boettcher Concert Hall is complete without a trip to the Colorado Symphony Guild Shop. Located in Gallery 1 on the first floor of Boettcher Concert Hall, the Guild Shop is a gift-givers delight full of unique souvenirs, seasonal fashions, and recordings produced by the Colorado Symphony.

But what may be less apparent to casual observers is the long, storied history shared by the Colorado Symphony and The Guild, a relationship that stretches back to the very birth of what is now known as the Colorado Symphony.

During the Great Depression, the Denver Civic Orchestra, a semi-professional precursor to the Denver Symphony Orchestra, struggled to pay musicians and find customers willing to pay for performances. In 1934, the Symphony’s volunteer 26

publicist, Helen Marie Black, along with prominent local figures Jeanne Cranmer and Lucille Wilkin founded the Denver Symphony Orchestra. Black would go on to become the first woman CEO of a major United States symphony orchestra, while serving as the Denver Symphony Orchestra’s business manager for more than 30 years, including twelve of them as an unpaid volunteer.

Shortly after the founding of the DSO, Ms. Cranmer envisioned an organization that would serve the DSO, not only in fundraising but as a nurturer of great music presentation and the creation of future audiences from the youth of the city. So, in 1935 she hosted a luncheon with six of her friends, including Helen Marie Black, at the Denver Country Club. It was at this meeting that the wheels were set in motion to form such an organization.

During a meeting at Mrs. Cramner’s home with 75 of Denver’s cultural leaders, the Women’s Committee for the Orchestra was officially formed with Ms. Cranmer elected as Chairmen, a post she held until 1940.

The Women’s Committee became the precursor to the Denver Symphony Guild, which changed its name in 1940 and in1947 saw the establishment of Music Appreciation Groups in various areas of Denver. The goal was to support the Denver Symphony Orchestra and encourage musical appreciation, knowledge, and participation of its members and the community. This continues to be the Guild’s purpose today.

Throughout their history, Guild members have been vital to many Symphony events and programs. As far back as 1947, the Guild promoted the orchestra’s first Red Rocks concert series by staffing five Thursday-Friday ticket booths in strategic Denver locations preceding the weekend events. The Guild helped expand the orchestra’s Education Department with the formation of the Junior Guild’s original “Tiny Tots” program in 1967. In 1973, a $30,000 Guild gift underwrote the orchestra’s first recording. And when Boettcher Hall opened in 1977 and was dedicated in 1978, Guild members served as ushers for introductory tours as well as the inaugural “Pick a Seat” program.

The Guild has maintained this strong relationship through the highs and lows in the Symphony’s past. When, in 1988, the Denver Symphony Orchestra suffered a severe financial downturn with its concert season suspended for several months, the Guild remained loyal. Their devotion was rewarded as the Symphony survived and emerged stronger as the Colorado Symphony. Thereafter, the Guild Board voted on a name change to Colorado Symphony Guild.

The Guild Shop at Boettcher Concert Hall

After more than 90 years, the CSG continues to be an invaluable component of the Colorado Symphony’s success. Over that time, the Guild has provided over $4.5 million in donations to the Colorado Symphony. Last year the Guild was able to donate a record sum of $83,000 to the Colorado Symphony.

“The generous support of the Colorado Symphony Guild is vital to the success of our organization,” said President & CEO Daniel Wachter. “We’re grateful not only for the Guild’s outstanding financial support through fundraising efforts and sales at the Guild Shop, but also for the support they provide to our musicians and staff throughout the season. Their passion and enthusiasm for the Colorado Symphony energizes our entire organization.”

Today, the most visible and well-known element is the Guild Shop, which debuted in 1983 as a card table in the Boettcher Concert Hall lobby where wrapping paper was sold. The Shop has evolved into a go-to boutique for unique musically oriented gifts, fine leather goods and jewelry, and trend setting clothing that appeals to the diverse patrons of the Colorado Symphony. And it has justified its transformation by producing more than $1 million in total net proceeds.

“The Colorado Symphony Guild has a proud history of supporting the Symphony and helping connect our community with great music,” said Lucia Machado, the current president of the Colorado Symphony Guild. “As we look ahead, we’re focused on building upon that legacy by welcoming new members, creating opportunities for engagement, and continuing to provide meaningful support for the Colorado Symphony. It’s exciting to be part of an organization that has made such an impact for more than 90 years, and we’re looking forward to what’s next.”

THE HEALING HAND

The Physical Art of Performance And The Healing Hand Behind The Music

Long before the audience rises to its feet in applause, before the first bow touches string, or the first note fills the hall, Colorado Symphony musicians are preparing their bodies for the demands of elite performance. Like professional athletes, these world-class artists spend years developing extraordinary strength, coordination, endurance, precision, and muscle memory and their ability to perform at the highest level depends on taking care of their bodies. For Colorado Symphony musicians, physical therapy, chiropractic care, and injury prevention are as much a part of their performance regimen as practice and rehearsal.

For years, Dr. David Shapiro has been helping Colorado Symphony musicians stay healthy, strong, and performance-ready, often carrying his portable chiropractic table into the hall during rehearsal breaks to care for the artists who spend their lives creating music for the community.

His connection to the performing arts began unexpectedly through a connection at his practice.

“I had a patient whose daughter was a dancer in the Colorado Ballet Studio Company and through her I got connected to the ballet and started working with them,” Dr. Shapiro recalled. “And then it occurred to me, if the ballet had a chiropractor, then do the symphony or the other arts organizations have a chiropractor? So, I was connected to the symphony by the ballet and that’s how it began.”

What started as a simple question evolved into a decades-long relationship with the Colorado Symphony and its musicians.

Most concertgoers see the polished final product: world-class musicians performing effortlessly under the lights for a few hours each week. What they don’t see, Dr. Shapiro says, are the countless hours of repetition and physical strain required to reach that level.

“People go to a show and they see the performers performing for maybe two hours or so,” he said.

“But they don’t really understand what goes into that performance.

The hours and hours and hours and years of practice. There’s a great deal of repetitive motion that takes place and postural issues that can develop over time.”

For orchestral musicians, those demands can be relentless. Violinists maintain asymmetrical playing positions for hours at a time. Violists and cellists endure repetitive stress on the neck, shoulders, and back.

Wind and brass players place constant pressure on muscles and joints while seated for extended rehearsals and performances.

“What I like to help them with is improving their posture, improving the biomechanics of not only the spine but the extremities as well,” Dr. Shapiro explained. “Ultimately, not just help with pain relief but help prevent these repetitive motion injuries from recurring.”

That care has made a profound difference for many musicians across the orchestra.

“Doctor Dave is a very skilled chiropractor, as well as a kind, funny, and caring person,” said Paul Primus, recently retired Colorado Symphony violinist who served as Principal Second Violin from 1985 to 2024. “I have worked with him for years, and he has helped me get over many aches and pains. Playing the violin is very challenging on the body. Doctor Dave has an excellent understanding of how to get me back to good playing shape as quickly as possible. He works on the whole body, not just the spine. We in the Colorado Symphony are very grateful for his generosity and skill.”

Violist Leah Kovach echoed that sentiment, emphasizing how essential Dr. Shapiro’s work has become to maintaining a demanding performance schedule.

THE HEALING HAND “Regular chiropractic adjustments with Dr. David Shapiro are a key part of my wellness and injury prevention routine to keep me performing three-plus concerts a week,” she said.

On long rehearsal days, he regularly brings his portable treatment table directly to the concert hall, transforming backstage practice rooms into temporary wellness clinics for musicians between rehearsals.

“It’s definitely a little more comfortable in my office,” he laughed. “But I typically will show up on days when the musicians have two rehearsals, and I’ll show up for about an hour during their lunch break.”

Those sessions can become a whirlwind of activity as musicians line up for treatment in the short window before returning to rehearsal.

For Dr. Shapiro, the work is rooted in a simple philosophy: people perform best when they feel their best.

“I think this applies to everyone. When you’re not feeling well, you’re not able to perform at their best,” he said. “One of our mottos in our office is to help people live active, healthy, and happy lives. And live to their full potential.”

That philosophy extends beyond the concert hall. Dr. Shapiro views the arts as an essential part of a thriving city and believes supporting organizations like the Colorado Symphony strengthens the entire community.

“Any vibrant city should have the arts,” he said. “There are financial challenges and other challenges, but it’s important to have the arts. If we as a community can help financially, but also in other ways, we should do so because it’s a win-win.”

Though he has had memorable backstage experiences — including working behind the scenes at a Warren Haynes Jerry Garcia tribute concert at Red Rocks last year — Dr. Shapiro says some of his most meaningful moments still come from sitting quietly in the audience at a Colorado Symphony performance.

“Every time I’m in the audience and I look on stage and I see the performers, I feel like I’ve had a small role in this performance and that brings me a lot of joy,” he said.

Running late? No stress. Our ushers will guide you in at just the right pause so you can slip in without worry. Sometimes that means a “bonus seat” until intermission, then you’ll move to the one on your ticket.

Want to deepen your experience? Don’t miss our Preludes before every Classics performance, led by one of our musicians.

They start in the hall at 6:30pm (Fri–Sat) and 12:00pm (Sun).
