Dear Friends, For many years, it has been my great pleasure to work with the extraordinary musicians of the Colorado Symphony, first as a frequent guest conductor, and most recently as Principal Conductor. I am profoundly honored to now begin this new chapter as Music Director and to continue our musical journey together with you at the heart of it all.

This 102nd season marks more than just a beginning — it is a celebration of the vibrant artistic spirit that lives within this orchestra, within Boettcher Concert Hall, and within our remarkable Colorado community. I have long admired the passion, precision, and soul of these musicians, and I am thrilled to build on the legacy of excellence that has brought us to this exciting moment.

We’ve curated a 2025/26 season that reflects both deep reverence for the great symphonic tradition and a bold commitment to innovation. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS WHAT IF I AM LATE? For the comfort and enjoyment of our musicians and patrons, late seating is at the discretion of the House Manager and takes place during pauses in the program. Ushers will let you know when you may enter the hall.

They may seat you in an area other than your ticketed seat so as to not disturb other patrons, and you may take your ticketed seat during intermission.

WHEN SHOULD I CLAP? During most Classics performances, there is a short, silent pause between each movement of a piece. You can determine how many movements there are in a piece, and how many silent pauses there will be, by looking at your program — the movements in each piece will be listed there. The applause is usually reserved for the end of the final movement of the piece, after the conductor has signaled the end of the final note with his or her baton or hand. Holding applause between movements is considered respectful of the performers' concentration and mindful of musical continuity.

WHAT IS YOUR CELL PHONE/PHOTO/ VIDEO POLICY? We ask that you please silence your cell phones and refrain from talking or texting on them during performances. Flash photography is prohibited at all times. We ask that you please refrain from taking any photos or video during Classics or Movie at the Symphony concerts unless the conductor is off the podium. During Symphony Pops concerts you may take pictures without a flash and may record short cell phone videos.

Please be courteous to your fellow concertgoers and be aware that if at any time your cell phone/camera use becomes a distraction to others, an usher may ask you to stop.

CAN I BRING FOOD OR DRINKS INTO THE CONCERT? You are welcome to bring drinks purchased at one of the bars into all concerts. Food is not allowed in the Hall, including food purchased in the Lobby.

CAN I BRING THE KIDS? Kids of all ages will enjoy our Family, education concerts, and many of our Symphony Pops, Holiday, and Summer concerts. All children require a ticket regardless of age, and child tickets are $10. Classics concerts tend to be between 2 and 21/2 hours long. Please consider this when deciding whether or not to bring your child. If your child is disturbing other patrons, an usher may ask you to take your child into the lobby for the remainder of the performance, without refund.

HOW LONG IS A TYPICAL CONCERT? Program length varies, but a typical performance lasts about two hours, including one 20 minute intermission. Visit the event page on our website, or flip to the performance details in this Soundings Magazine.

WHAT IF I’M UNABLE TO ATTEND MY PERFORMANCE? Subscribers may exchange tickets free of charge — one of many subscriber benefits!

Non-subscribers may exchange for an additional fee. You may exchange tickets in person, by phone, or online for another performance within the same season. There is an additional cost if seating upgrades apply, and all exchange requests are subject to availability. You may also donate your tickets back to the Colorado Symphony and receive a donation receipt.

HOW CAN I FIND OUT IF A CONCERT IS CANCELED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER? We rarely cancel a concert due to inclement weather, but when this occurs we will send a direct email notification to all ticket holders.

This investment, which allows each musician to customize their hearing experience through an app-controlled system, places the Symphony among a select few peer organizations – including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Metropolitan Opera, the Minnesota Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic – that have made hearing protection a priority.

The Unseen Threat: Hearing Loss in Orchestras For a professional musician, their hearing is their most valuable asset. Yet, with sound levels in large orchestral performances at Boettcher Concert Hall and other venues like Red Rocks Amphitheater at times exceeding 90 decibels (dB), the risk of long-term hearing damage is a serious concern. Despite this, the industry standard has not traditionally included investment in custom hearing protection, leaving many musicians vulnerable to noise-induced hearing loss over time.

While traditional over-the-counter earplugs can offer protection, they don’t effectively allow musicians to hear the rest of the orchestra around them. Recognizing this gap, the Colorado Symphony made a mission-driven decision to protect its musicians without compromising artistic integrity. The Sensaphonics 3DME system not only acts as high-fidelity, custommolded earplugs that reduce overall volume without sacrificing sound quality but also serves as in-ear monitors for amplified performances at venues like Red Rocks.

“The Colorado Symphony’s decision to equip its musicians with the world’s most advanced custom hearing protection devices is one of the most forward-thinking investments in musicians’ health and performance I have ever seen,” said Caleb Kronen, Au.D., CPS/A, Doctor of Audiology, Director of Hearing Conservation, Certified Professional Supervisor in Audiometric Monitoring for the Marion Downs Center and one of the key stakeholder in the initiative. “The Symphony is not just ahead of the curve—they are setting the standard.”

A partnership in Prevention: Marion Downs Center This groundbreaking initiative has been guided by the Marion Downs Center, a nonprofit “Center of Excellence” in Denver that has been at the forefront of hearing loss prevention for musicians since 1972. Since 2019, the Center has worked closely with the Colorado Symphony, conducting hearing tests and providing custom-molded filtered earplugs to musicians.

Dr. Caleb Kronen, a Doctor of Audiology and Director of the Hearing Conservation Program at Marion Downs, has played a crucial role in implementing best practices for musician hearing health. A former semi-professional musician himself, Dr. Kronen’s doctoral research focused on hearing protection for classical musicians.

“By partnering with the Marion Downs Center’s team of audiologists to implement this cutting-edge technology, educate musicians on hearing loss prevention, and provide hearing tests, the Colorado Symphony is taking a groundbreaking step in preserving its musicians’ most valuable asset: their hearing,” added Kronen. “These devices allow each musician to tailor their hearing protection to their unique needs, recognizing that every instrument and section presents different auditory challenges.”

Cutting-Edge Technology for Customized Protection Starting in 2024, ten Colorado Symphony musicians began testing the Sensaphonics 3DME system with custom-molded tips, which ensured a secure fit, optimal sound quality, and better sanitation. Each unit with custom molding costs approximately $2,000, but the Marion Downs Center generously provided each unit to the symphony for a cost of $1,000 per unit. The Symphony also invested in 21 additional units for substitute musicians that come with standard earpieces at a cost of $800 per unit, as well as materials to safeguard and store the units on-site at Boettcher Concert Hall. In total, the orchestra will be outfitted with $100,000 in new hearing protection thanks to this generous gift.

Now, with the full Symphony adopting the technology, each musician will benefit from: • Custom-molded tunable earplugs with adjustable sound levels via an app.

• The ability to function as high-fidelity in-ear monitors for amplified performances.

• A personal limiter to cap maximum sound levels for safety.

• Adjustable EQ settings to accommodate existing hearing injuries or enhance specific instrument sounds.

For Principal Percussionist John Kinzie, the investment in this technology is transformational. “Percussion instruments generate some of the highest decibel levels in an orchestra, and traditional hearing protection often dulls the nuances we need to hear. This system allows me to control my sound environment without losing clarity. It’s a game-changer.”

In Her Honor: A Legacy of Music and Generosity Amid this initiative to protect musician hearing stands a tribute rooted in personal conviction and passion. This generous gift, which funded the Sensaphonics ear protection for all 80 full-time musicians, was made in memory of Penny Burke, a devoted music lover and steadfast advocate for hearing safety. She never attended a concert without her own earplugs, setting an example and often encouraging others to do the same.

Penny’s husband, Tim, felt there was no better way to honor her memory than with this gift to the symphony. “Penny was a passionate music lover and she left an indelible mark on everyone who knew her,” he said. “Her deep appreciation for the arts and the joy she found in music inspired those around her. In her memory, I am honored to make this contribution to the Colorado Symphony, a reflection of her love for music and her belief in its power to enrich lives.”

“For Penny, music was more than just a source of enjoyment; it was a fundamental part of her identity,” he continued. “She often expressed how music has the incredible ability to bring people together, creating shared experiences that transcend boundaries. Whether 16

By supporting their hearing health, we help ensure that they can continue to share their remarkable gifts for years to come. I hope her story inspires others to embrace the power of music and to support the arts, just as she did.”

Remembering Charles Burrell

Whatever folks thought they knew about renowned classical and jazz bassist Charles “Charlie” Burrell — his historic place as one of the first Black musicians to sign with a major American orchestra, his collaborations with jazz legends like Billie Holiday and Duke Ellington, his presence as a cornerstone of Denver’s musical life — the truth is, he was even more than that. A titan in both sound and spirit, Burrell embodied a kind of brilliance and generosity that transcended the stage.

On June 17, 2025, Charlie Burrell passed away at the age of 104. He died in Denver, the city he helped shape into a national hub for music and culture, surrounded by a legacy that will long outlive him.

“Our beloved Charles passed away this morning, June 17 at the age of 104,” his family said in a statement. “Born in Toledo, OH on October 4, 1920, Charles was a devoted son, father, husband, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and friend to many. Charles dedicated his life to his music and inspired the world with his bass. As one of the first African Americans to win an audition with a major symphony orchestra, he opened the doors for musicians of color everywhere. While we are heartbroken at his loss, we are also grateful for his long and inspiring life. Thank you to all who cared about Charles and thank you for all of your prayers.”

Indeed, Charlie Burrell was often called “the Jackie Robinson of classical music.” Though he may not have been the very first Black musician to play with a major American symphony, being the first Black member with the Denver Symphony Orchestra in 1949 enshrined him as a pioneer. But that wasn’t the beginning—or the end—of his trailblazing journey.

In 1959, he became the first African American musician to be hired by the San Francisco Symphony. Burrell’s pioneer essence was also felt in education. He was one of the first professors of color at the renowned San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

Burrell’s roots in music ran deep. Raised in Depression-era Detroit, he was captivated by the classical music broadcasts of the Detroit Symphony and particularly inspired by a recording of Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony — he resolved, as a young boy, that C O LO R A D O S Y M P H O N Y.O R G

he would one day play in an orchestra. That dream guided him through racial barriers, financial hardships, and even war.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Base, where he joined the Navy’s first all-Black band, performing alongside future jazz greats like Clark Terry and Al Grey. Following the war, he studied music at Wayne State University but struggled to find a place in classical music due to the color of his skin. Four orchestras turned him away before fate and a bus ride brought him to Denver.

While working as a janitor at Fitzsimons Army Hospital and attending the University of Denver, Burrell struck up a conversation with John VanBuskirk, principal bass of the Denver Symphony. That conversation led to an audition and a historic hire with the Denver Symphony Orchestra (now the Colorado Symphony). Burrell’s orchestral tenure in Denver spanned more than 40 years, from 1949-1959, and upon his return from San Franciso in 1965 until his retirement in 1999.

“Charlie Burrell was a trailblazer for people of color in the orchestra business,” said Basil Vendryes, Colorado Symphony Principal Viola. “He was the first player of color in a major orchestra (the San Francisco Symphony) and one of only a handful in that orchestra’s history — I also share that distinction with Charlie. When I came to Denver, he pulled me aside and told me to both ‘represent’ and be a role model — I have tried to make good on those requests over the years.”

Even as he broke down barriers in the classical world, Burrell never turned his back on jazz. He played in Denver’s legendary Five Points neighborhood alongside some of the greatest jazz musicians of the 20th century. In smoky clubs and grand concert halls alike, his bass lines were the steady heartbeat of every ensemble he joined.

During the 1950’s, the jazz scene in Five Points was the only one between St. Louis and the West Coast, so it became one of the most alive in the country, often being referred to as “The Harlem of the West”. He played in the first integrated jazz trio in Colorado, the Al Rose Trio, and rose to be a central player in the Five Points jazz scene by becoming the house bass player at the Rossonian Hotel, considered the “entertainment central” spot in Five Points during that era.

“I’m proud to call Charlie a friend and colleague,” said William Hill, longtime Principal Timpanist for the Colorado Symphony. “When I was first in the symphony, Charlie hired me regularly for jazz gigs. It was always such a joy, we just listened to each other, and it always worked! Charles brought me much 22

personal joy and I know he did the same for so many others. What a wonderful life of sharing his love for music and people.”

Burrell’s musical gifts were matched only by his generosity of spirit.

Whether offering guidance to younger musicians, visiting the sick in hospitals, or volunteering his time and energy to community causes, he lived a life of deep service.

“He had the heart of a lion and the endurance of an elephant,” said Purnell Steen, jazz pianist and Burrell’s cousin. “He was the most benevolent man. He was always giving. However, you didn’t want to cross him. He was small but mighty.”

To his family, Burrell was both hero and human being — a man who practiced at dawn, who cooked fish fries, who quietly changed the world without ever asking for applause.

“My uncle was someone who walked in excellence,” said GRAMMY-winning jazz singer and niece Dianne Reeves. “He was about being the best at what he did and I witnessed that.

Staying at his house, four in the morning before the birds started chirping, he would be practicing.”

“He could not grasp the magnitude of what he did,” added Steen. “He said, ‘All I want to do is play music.’ He did not get the credibility he should have gotten, he did not get the notoriety. He lived for three quarters of a century in splendid obscurity and we don’t want his footprint to be erased.”

But perhaps Burrell understood better than anyone the true value of a life well-lived. In the prologue to his autobiography, The Life of Charlie Burrell, he wrote: “I can sum up most of what I was doing in life in a very few words. It was a matter of love for the profession and love for the people. And that’s about how simple it was.”

Burrell leaves behind a legacy that spans generations. He mentored countless musicians, helped shape Denver’s music scene into one of national renown, and proved — again and again — that music can be a powerful agent of change.

To those lucky enough to have heard him play — or to have known him—Charlie Burrell will forever be a towering figure. And while the music he made may now fall silent, the echo of his impact will resound in concert halls, classrooms, and communities for generations to come.

Meet Daniel Wachter – Colorado Symphony’s New President & CEO

When Daniel Wachter first stepped into Boettcher Concert Hall, he felt something he hadn’t in a long time since moving to Colorado in the middle of the 2020 pandemic: a sense of home and belonging. The energy of the musicians, the richness of the music, and the sense of community that filled the space instantly struck a chord. Now, as the newly appointed President & CEO of the Colorado Symphony, Wachter is bringing his passion for the arts, decades of global leadership experience, and deep commitment to community to Denver’s and Colorado’s premier symphonic institution.

Having served on the Board of Directors of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra from 2018-2023, Wachter officially stepped into the role on April 1, 2025, while his connection to the Colorado Symphony began well before that, first as a patron, then as a member of the Board of Trustees in 2023, and as Co-Vice Chair as of summer 2024.

Over that time, he’s helped launch bold initiatives, including the “Conducting Business Leadership” workshop series, and was instrumental in forging a new Memorandum of Understanding with the Bayerische Philharmonie in Munich, Germany — an initiative that enhances the economic City-to-City partnership between Denver and Munich culturally.

“Music has always been a powerful joy and force in my life,” says Wachter. “It’s not just entertainment, it’s essential soul-food and creates connection, creativity, and expression.”

Wachter’s journey to this moment is as global as it is inspiring. A seasoned executive with more than 25 years of experience leading organizations across industries — from protective and healthcare packaging to specialty chemistry — he most recently served as CEO of Chromatic Technologies, Inc. (CTI) in Colorado Springs. A polyglot fluent in English, German, and French, he brings an international sensibility to our mission: pioneering the future of live symphonic music and therefore ensuring that the Colorado Symphony continues to thrive and be heard in more places as a cornerstone of Colorado’s cultural landscape.

That mission includes several ambitious goals. Chief among them: innovating, and expanding the Symphony’s reach to underserved communities across our city and state, growing partnerships that bridge the arts and business, and advancing long-needed efforts to renovate Boettcher Concert Hall for future generations.

“Boettcher Concert Hall is the instrument of our orchestra and our home, and like any home, it must stay safe, accessible, and inspiring,” Wachter says. “Great cities like Denver have a great orchestra like the Colorado Symphony, and they need a great concert hall.

Therefore, renovating Boettcher Concert Hall will be a forward-looking commitment to the people we serve and the music we create. It’s about ensuring this space remains a hub for community connection for the next decades.”

At the same time, Wachter is laser-focused on increasing access to the transformative power of live symphonic music. That means strengthening programs that bring music into schools, libraries, and other community spaces; creating new experiences that resonate across cultures and generations; and working to ensure that every Coloradan sees themselves reflected in the work of the orchestra.

“We have a responsibility, and a privilege, to serve all people,” Wachter says. “I want kids in rural towns and urban neighborhoods, longtime classical fans and brand-new listeners, to all feel: this is their Symphony, and they belong here.”

He brings not only professional credentials — including an Executive MBA from Steinbeis University in collaboration with institutions in Germany, Switzerland, and the U.S. — but a serving leadership philosophy rooted in collaboration and innovation. He’s hosted artsfocused leadership podcasts, built cultural diplomacy programs, and championed the intersection of business and creativity for years.

“Great organizations don’t settle,” Wachter says. “They preserve and sustain, and they take themselves out of comfort zones, innovate, grow, and dream bigger. That’s what the Colorado Symphony can and will do.”

Wachter lives in Colorado Springs and Denver together with his wife Tina, their daughters Louisa and Fiona are students at Denver University and CU Boulder. An avid cyclist and snowboarder, he’s quickly made Colorado’s landscapes and communities his own. In 2022, the Wachter family became U.S. citizens while retaining their German citizenship, deepening their ties to the country and state they now call home.

As the Colorado Symphony looks ahead to its second century, Wachter is eager to turn inspiration into action. “There is extraordinary momentum here,” he says. “From the excellent artistry of our musicians, conductors, and artistic leadership to the passion of our audiences, this organization is alive with possibility. THE COLORADO SYMPHONY’S WEBSITE, coloradosymphony.org, provides information on all Colorado Symphony activities at Boettcher Concert Hall and other venues around Colorado including performances at Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre, the Arvada Center for the Performing Arts, and more.

Other venues may require the use of another ticketing source; however, you will always be directed to the official ticketing agent or source by using coloradosymphony.org/navigation.

LATE SEATING: In consideration of our musicians, guest artists, crew, staff, and your fellow patrons, late seating is at the discretion of the House Manager and takes place during pauses in the program. Ushers will let you know when you may enter the hall. They may seat you in an area other than your ticketed seat so as to not disturb other patrons, and you may take your ticketed seat during intermission.

NO SMOKING: Boettcher Concert Hall is a smoke free venue. Any and all forms of smoking are prohibited in the venue.

NO FILMING: Audio or video recording devices, GoPros, professional cameras, or cameras with removable lenses are not allowed in the hall.

SECURITY: In furtherance of Denver Arts & Venues ongoing initiative to create a safe and secure environment for all patrons and employees of the Denver Performing Arts Complex, the Colorado Symphony Association is pleased to partner with the Denver Performing Arts Complex on the newlyintroduced security measures for Boettcher Concert Hall and all venues within the complex.

We encourage you to arrive up to 45 minutes prior to the start of your event. This will alleviate congestion in all walk ways and entrances and will allow for proper screening. To review the full policy and prohibited items, please visit artscomplex.com.

In the event of a building emergency patrons will be notified by an announcement from the stage. Should the building need to be evacuated, please exit the nearest door, or according to instructions given from stage.

FIRST AID FACILITIES for all patrons are available. Please inquire with an usher should you need these facilities or assistance. Please report any accidents, falls, or lost items to an usher promptly.

ELEVATOR is located within the venue after passing through security and having your ticket scanned. Please follow the signs to the southeast end of the main lobby. The elevator is to the left of the entrance of Gallery 1 on the first level of the lobby.

COAT CHECK is located underneath the main lobby stairs in the hallway leading to Gallery 1.

BAR SERVICE is provided at most concerts.

Concessions are managed by Centerplate.

The Colorado Symphony Association does not manage concessions, ordering, or realize profit from concessions.

LOST AND FOUND items should be reported promptly to the House Manager, via an usher, or directly. Lost items are kept by the usher staff until the end of the performance. After the performance items are taken to Arts & Venues Lost and Found. If attempting to claim lost property during or shortly after your performance, please see an usher. If you’ve left the hall and have a lost item, please call 720.865.4200.

THE GUILD SHOP: Located in Gallery 1 on the first floor of Boettcher Concert Hall, The Shop (as it's affectionately known) is the perfect place to pick up unique gifts, seasonal fashions, and of course recordings produced by, and of, the Colorado Symphony. The Shop is operated by a dedicated group of Symphony supporters and enthusiasts year-round.
